Hailing from Provo, Utah, Jen Brown's journey through life has been marked by a deep sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on her community. After graduating from Weber State University with a degree in microbiology, Jen's pursuit of knowledge led her to Creighton Dental School in Omaha, Nebraska, where she honed her skills in dentistry. In 2004, armed with her degree and a passion for creating a better world, Jen returned to her roots in Bountiful, Utah, along with her husband Mike and their five cherished boys, who are the driving force behind their lives. Jen's devotion to safeguarding the well-being of children and adolescents has been a guiding principle in her life. Her advocacy began in the crucial arena of protecting young minds from the harmful effects of pornography. With a determined spirit, she actively contributed to the development of legislative bills, including a landmark resolution that recognized pornography as a public health crisis. A testament to her dedication, her paper on the distinct impact of sexually explicit material on the adolescent brain was published in the prestigious Journal of Adolescents. Not content with simply sharing her findings locally, Jen's commitment took her across continents, as she traveled to Switzerland to present her groundbreaking research at the World Congress of Neurology. Her involvement extended to the realm of thought leadership, where she graced the Bountiful TEDx event with her insights. At the heart of her community engagement lies a desire to create a safer and more nurturing environment for Utah's youth. Jen proudly led the charge as the director of the Safe Internet for Utah Kid's campaign, an initiative aimed at equipping young people with the tools to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. This drive to protect the next generation's innocence from destructive influences serves as a driving force behind her involvement in shaping public policy. Jen's passion for community betterment goes beyond safeguarding children. With her dynamic leadership, she has served as the president of both the United Women's Forum and the Davis County Republican Women, fostering meaningful connections and fostering positive change. Her dedication to strengthening the local business landscape is evident in her membership with the Davis Chamber of Commerce, where she actively participates in the Legislative Affairs Committee. Above all, Jen's unshakeable love for her country and her profound reverence for the Constitution have led her to establish Utah Citizens for the Constitution and The Constitution Education Foundation. With these organizations, she strives to ensure that the principles and liberties that define the United States are preserved for generations to come. In every facet of her life, Jen Brown exemplifies a true advocate, leader, and guardian of the values that shape her community and nation. Her journey is one of dedication, empowerment, and the unwavering belief in the potential to create a better future for all. "

Rescued: An Outdoor Podcast for Hikers and Adventurers

When we hear the whisper to step off the concrete, away from the built environment and into the bush, we step into a world and a place that speaks to the very heart of what it means to be alive. These places, away from the constraints and controls that are part of our day-to-day lives, connect us to a place that is proven to be fuel for our bodies and the salve for our souls.By walking away from the cement, we open ourselves up to the proven benefits to our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health; but in doing so, we also expose ourselves to environments, places and conditions that require a keen sense of risk and a whole bunch of skills to keep us safe and enjoying these places for many years to come. It's in these places, full of wildness and joy, that we can also find ourselves facing unexpected and unplanned-for situations, even leading us to the edge of life itself.Rescued is a podcast of conversations with rescuers and those who've been rescued. It's about the lessons we learn about ourselves, the places we go and why - without judgement - to help us have better adventures, manage risk and deal with the unexpected. So whether you're an armchair traveller or a multiday expeditioner, the Rescued Podcast exists to help us all connect with nature, the outdoors community and learn from those who've gone before.I'm Caro Ryan from LotsaFreshAir.com - a hiking and bushwalking website and YouTube channel, started in 2012, to help inspire people to spend time adventuring, teach them how to go there safely and then encourage them to do so, looking after themselves, their mates and this incredible planet that we live on.I invite you to join me and my guests, as they share about the time when things went wrong: what happened, what they learned and how we can stop these things from happening again.I'll be chatting with weekend adventurers and everyday nature-lovers, people just like you and me, along with a variety of people from emergency services and supporting organisations, like those involved in training, equipment, research and academia, lending a different perspective for incidents in these wild places we love to visit. So join me on Rescued: An Outdoor Podcast for Hikers and Adventurers, wherever you get your podcasts. The Rescued Podcast is produced on the unceded lands of the Gundungurra and Dharug people, of the Blue Mountains of NSW. I pay my respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge their enduring connection to and care for Country. Special thanks to our sponsors, Paddy Pallin and to Jen Brown for production support. Tune in as return guest Jackson Leight (creator of the satirical RWBY news website https://bumbleby.com) dives back into more RWBY content with Arthur. This time, they're focusing on RWBY: Ice Queendom, the 2022 spinoff series that anime studio Shaft produced for the Rooster Teeth web series RWBY. Primarily set between the events of Volumes 1 and 2, Ice Queendom is, to say the least, an interesting spinoff to dissect. Discussion topics include the spin-off weaving video game mechanics into its plot, the ways in which it succeeds and fails to adapt the original show's racism allegory, Weiss's dysfunctional family dynamic, and the introduction of a Nightmare Hunter named Shion Zaiden. Co-created by Rooster Teeth Productions and Shaft, RWBY: Ice Queendom stars: • Japanese cast: Saori Hayami, Yōko Hikasa, Yū Shimamura, Ami Koshimizu, Hiro Shimono, Aya Suzaki, Megumi Toyoguchi, Soma Saito, Kazuhiko Inoue, Masumi Asano, Soichi Abe, Megumi Han, Tomoaki Maeno, Kenyu Horiuchi, Shin-ichiro Miki, Hiroki Nanami, Madoka Shiga, Ayako Kawasumi, Marina Inoue, Ken Uo, Yuichi Nakamura, Arisa Sakuraba, and Kikuko Inoue. • English cast: Lindsay Jones, Kara Eberle, Arryn Zech, Barbara Dunkelman, Miles Luna, Samantha Ireland, Jen Brown, Neath Oum, Shannon McCormick, Tiana Camacho, Anthony Sardinha, Taylor McNee, Michael Jones, Burnie Burns, Christopher Wehkamp, Kdin Jenzen, Jason Douglas, Elizabeth Maxwell, Howard Wang, J. Michael Tatum, Garrett Hunter, John Swasey, and Jen Taylor. Spoilers start at 39:50 Note 1: during the start of the podcast, Arthur and Jackson spend a bit of time focusing on the bigotry that former Rooster Teeth employee Kdin Jenzen had endured for years at the company and the generally toxic work environment that we now know exists there. It's necessary to have this conversation, particularly since Jenzen is the voice of Shion in the English dub of Ice Queendom. If you want to skip past this talk and go straight into the Ice Queendom coverage, you're free to go to 13:10. However, it might be best to listen to the beginning portion anyways and get the context surrounding RT's current state. Note 2: this episode was recorded back in December, so it's not up-to-date on all the latest RWBY news, including the long-awaited release of Volume 9. Potato farmers in the San Luis Valley are cheering a Mexican Supreme Court decision that opened the country to Colorado tubers, ending a conflict decades old. Since 2000, American farmers have been able to sell their potatoes in the first few miles of Mexico south of the border. Now the country is open for free potato trade and Colorado is eyeing a new market of 70 million consumers, which could grow the U.S. potato export market in Mexico from about $60 million a year to more than $250 million a year. Colorado Sun reporter Jen Brown visited with San Luis Valley farmers about the promise of a new market in Mexico. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

More than 900 people in Colorado died of fentanyl overdoses in 2021, which amounts to at least four times the number who died three years ago, according to the state health department. As the fentanyl crisis has worsened in the state, new treatment programs are emerging, including a detox center in Littleton where patients in recovery spend up to eight days with plush bedding, a flat-screen TV, meals delivered by UberEats, popcorn and other amenities often found in hotels, all for nearly $2,000 a night. Colorado Sun human services reporter Jen Brown talks to reporter Erica Breunlin about how detox centers and opioid clinics in the state are battling addiction and trying to prevent people from overdosing after they've detoxed. Tune in as Jackson Leight (creator of the satirical RWBY news website https://bumbleby.com) teams up with Arthur to dissect Volume 1 of RWBY, the American anime web series that online entertainment company Rooster Teeth premiered in 2013. RWBY has been lasting for eight seasons so far, and now 2CC (which already dropped a brief episode on Volume 8 back during the podcast's text-to-voice days) is returning to where it all started in the world of Remnant when teenage Huntresses-in-training Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long started their combat schooling at Beacon Academy to learn how to fight the Creatures of Grimm. The anime physics, the many weapons that can transform into guns, the superficial racism allegory, and the time that Arthur spends obsessing over the proper term for a chess piece's color are just a few of the topics addressed by this episode. From beer labels to literary classics like A River Runs Through It, trout fishing is a beloved feature of the iconography of the American West. But as Jen Brown demonstrates in Trout Culture: How Fly Fishing Forever Changed the Rocky Mountain West (U Washington Press, 2017), the popular conception of Rocky Mountain trout fishing as a quintessential experience of communion with nature belies the sport's long history of environmental manipulation, engineering, and, ultimately, transformation. A fly-fishing enthusiast herself, Brown places the rise of recreational trout fishing in a local and global context. Globally, she shows how the European sport of fly-fishing came to be a defining, tourist-attracting feature of the expanding 19th-century American West. Locally, she traces the way that the burgeoning fly-fishing tourist industry shaped the environmental, economic, and social development of the Western United States: introducing and stocking favored fish species, eradicating the less favored native "trash fish," changing the courses of waterways, and leading to conflicts with Native Americans' fishing and territorial rights. Through this analysis, Brown demonstrates that the majestic trout streams often considered a timeless feature of the American West are in fact the product of countless human interventions adding up to a profound manipulation of the Rocky Mountain environment.
