This is a repost of an interview Lizz Quain from Trailblazing Families did with Cecilie Conrad. The conversation moves beyond the typical travel tales; we plunge into the depths of unschooling and how it complements the nomadic lifestyle beautifully. Cecilie shares the roller-coaster ride of transitioning to unschooling, navigating the pandemic, and choosing to stay in mainland Europe. We'll also discuss the importance of emergency preparedness and the inherent challenges of this alternative form of education. Expect to hear rich anecdotes and get a sneak peek into our current life and future plans. The final segments of our conversation venture into the future of world-schooled children. Cecilie and Lizz engage in a meaningful dialogue about unschooling and how it equips children to the demands of the 21st century. We delve into the realms of self-directed learning and the significance of children designing their own life paths. Hear about Cecilies own experiences with her daughter, who became a writer at 11, and my son, who's on his own unique journey. We close our conversation by engaging in the challenges of world schooling, from financial hiccups to socializing on the road and facing health issues. Get ready for an episode packed with real, relatable, and inspiring stories from a world-schooling family!
Daniel Prince is living life on his terms. He walked away from his corporate job in finance and together with his family they are taking the path less travelled. Travelling the world and now setting in France for a while he has a unique perspective to share with us. On this episode of The Your Life! Your Terms! Show we catch up on trends he is following, Bitcoin, economics and why money is at the heart of so many of today's global issues. In this episode, we're chatting with the Kaponay family who have travelled to over 50 countries on 6 continents over 9 years and in doing so learned how to be at home with themselves, at home with their family and at home in the world.
I (Hats) had a DM exchange with Daniel a bit over a year ago, but other than that, we didn't know each other. So, when we released our first episode (and had a few podcasting issues) I decided to reach out again to ask for some advice. Daniel's podcast Once Bitten, is one of our go-to pods for all things Bitcoin, and in the last couple of years he's really established himself as not only a great host and interviewer, but as a source of reliable content. There was no need for him to help us, but not only did he do that, he offered to come on as our first guest. Now, we're not necessarily going after Bitcoin royalty as guests, but we weren't going to refuse, and it was great to sit and chat about his journey so far. Oh, and we got to meet Lauren so that's also a highlight for us. We're still learning about the audio side of things, so bear with us, but we hope you enjoy the rip. Please check out Daniel's Once Bitten podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/once-bitten/id1497540130 https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMzQ2ZjllOC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw== And his book: Choose Life: The Tools, Tricks and Hacks of Long-Term Family Travellers, Worldschoolers and Digital Nomads https://amzn.to/3k1MaO3 If you'd like to contact us, please do so via Twitter: https://twitter.com/2BitIdiots Or visit our website: https://www.bitcoin-first.com
Recently I have been hearing more stories about people in the Bitcoin network becoming interested in unschooling. Or possibly the stories are of unschoolers becoming interested in Bitcoin..... In either case, why the interest? What do Unschooling and Bitcoin have in common? Unschooling and Bitcoin As my family has been learning and diving into the world of Bitcoin over the last few years, I see the link between many of the values that both the Unschooling world and the Bitcoin world hold. I think the common threads in both worlds are; decentralization, autonomy and freedom. As one recent article phrased it, "Bitcoin provides power to the users and unschooling provides power to the students." I couldn't agree more and that is why I felt it was a good time to share this connection on the podcast. Daniel Prince~Unschooling Dad, Digital Nomad and Bitcoin Daniel Prince is an unschooling dad to 4, an author and podcaster. His book, Choose Life: The Tools, Tricks and Hacks of Long Term Family Travellers, Worldschoolers and Digital Nomads is a recommended read if you are a parent looking to leave the rat race and worldschool. His podcast, Once BITten! shares real life stories of how Bitcoin has changed and shaped individuals and families lives forever. In this episode Daniel Prince joins me to talk about his personal experience in the world of Unschooling and Bitcoin and why both have become a road to freedom for himself and for his family. What we explored in this episode "The job I was in was sucking the life and soul out of me"~ Daniel's story of leaving the rat race and 'Choosing Life' for himself and his family Unschooling and the mind shift we need to embrace it The separation of education from state How they have found ways to support each of their children's learning choices Doing what society expects of you and not questioning - and what that gets you Why community is key What is school? How the top down structure of the education system reflects the top down structure of the monetary system A little history on the Gold Standard, the change to the US Dollar in the 40's and how that has shaped the federal reserve, inflation and our world economy Bitcoin- inventing a medium of exchange that can be tracked and fixed The social (and economic) implications of Bitcoin The question to ask- What is money? Why unschooling and bitcoin? For me, the unschooling journey hasn't just been about questioning the education system and my previous beliefs on learning and school. It has caused me to look at the other institutions within our society and framework. It's about disruption. Freedom. Autonomy. Challenging the conventional education system, we look at how WorldSchooling actually imparts more important life skills that are often overlooked amidst the hustle & bustle of life. Joined by TEDxEdu speaker and CoFounder of Project World School - Lainie Liberti, we discuss the importance of empathy and opening up to perspectives. Learning is a lifelong journey and the world might just be the best classroom.I promised you this episode is not just for WorldSchoolers. I gained so much from it.
Reframing Trust and ProofProof and trust have become very schoolish. The way I see it, trust is often a thing to choose, not a thing to be earned. In deschooling, the proof of trustworthiness often comes after the decision to trust a process. There’s no need for proof, the proof is part of a bond of trust we build up in our daily lives, it's about the people, the processes, and the way we forge our relationships--trust emerges from that.- Akilah #raisingfreepeopleWe've got a birthday episode on deck! FOFC family member, Natalie Pipkin, turned 35 today (Nov 26, Baby!), and we get to celebrate with her AND with her city as Natalie and family launched their mobile book store on this special day! You'll hear all about it today, and you'll also hear how Natalie offers us detailed, really specific examples of how unschooling shows up in her life. She goes on to share how she's understanding it as liberation work, and how she facilitates it in community by embodying the skills of it and bringing it to spaces where we can practice it, and see the benefits of it and then want to do it more and more. This opens us up to a lot of the deschooling that comes with the desire to get more of the type of experiences you have when you start facilitating learning, instead of trying to simulate it, or force it.Natalie and Akilah talk about a lot of the highs that came from that, along with the concerns that caused Natalie and her husband to pull their boys from school right before CO-VID 19 hit. They had fears and concerns like anyone else, but since that decision, they've deepened and grown in ways that bring her family so much comfort about their choice to empower their sons in their educational journey by removing the lies, confines, and willful omissions that constantly show up in classrooms. You'll hear about that, in this episode, and it is so important for these experiences to be shared, for you to get that all through your ears, your mind, and all through your body. I know that so many among us are trying to figure out what it means now to nurture learning, outside of both the confines of conventional education. And also dealing with feelings of loss from the sense of framework and other adult support that made conventional education really useful for some families in many ways, even with its deeply problematic elements.LIBERATION WALKCheck out Natalie’s previous episode: Ep 171: Black Child, You Are Seen Here she is again on Parenting for Liberation podcastHere’s that book Natalie mentioned on Spiritual Self-careIf you are hosting or are part of a Raising Free People Book Club, message Fatima@raisingfreepeople.com to invite Akilah to pop in on one of your sessionsRaising Free People Network’s Presence Counselors Leslie Bray and Anthony Galloway, Jr. are here to support unschooling and deschooling processes for families and organizationsRemember to check on TRUE: Towards Radical Social Change Unschooling and Parental Education, an earthwide gathering towards radical social change. Over the past 3 years of interviewing guests, we've usually come at it from the ownership side, or at least from a managerial side of a business. We talk about what our guest does for a living or how they left the crazy lifestyle of Corporate America and travelled as an expat and became an entrepreneur. Today, we're going to change that up a bit and talk about a business that I think is amazing, Love Home Swap. Not from someone that has ownership in it, but has used it extensively. My guest today on The Expat Money Show did in fact leave the craziness of a 9-5 job, with his wife and family in tow and began travelling the world, homeschooling their children and becoming digital nomads. He has been travelling the world non-stop for over 3 years and has completed over 60 home swaps in over 16 countries across 4 continents using this system. After chatting with him on the phone a few weeks ago about his travels and reading his book, ‘Choose Life', I knew that I wanted you, my listeners, to hear his story too. Ranan Lachman's wife, Michelle, was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. After a tortuous year of medical treatments this near-death experience transformed their views on life. It created a sense of urgency to focus on purpose and dedicate the time they have with the people they love. Today Ranan and his family live in Bali, Indonesia where he helps other families escape the "rat race" and live a healthier, more balanced life. Life Of Their Own Design Ranan's family were living out the "American Dream". He worked on Wall Street, created a few start-ups and moved to Silicon Valley to chase the tech boom and...money. Ranan worked long hours, coming home after the kids were already in bed. But life took a turn when his wife became diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. After surviving a year of aggressive medical treatments they questioned everything. What they were doing and what they were living for. They came to realize the values they were living and the values they believed in did not match. So here's what they did; sold their belongings, quit the office work setting, and set out to travel the world for a year. Lesson #1 Making The First Decision Can Be The Hardest "We haven't done anything special, we just made the decision to leave." After researching and planning their adventure for 6 months they decided to get on the road. Life centred around learning and travel. They purchased an RV and headed south to the tip of South America. On this journey they experienced things they would have never done if they were still living in the US. They roadschooled (learning and homeschooling as they traveled), volunteered, learned a new language and got to know each other better as a family. They experienced things together. Experiences of joy but also challenging experiences. A life of their own design. Lesson #2 The Challenges Stretch You After a year traveling South America the family moved on to Australia. They traveled Australia for a few months, then headed to Bali with plans to move throughout Asia. But once they got to Bali, their travel stopped. In this episode Ranan talks about why Bali is the right place for them to be. How it offers a healing space for his wife, the low cost of living suits their family, and the value in minimalism reflects their lifestyle. They decided to stay. Lesson #3 Saving Money Through Travel Ranan has found the cost of living in Bali to be a small percentage of the cost of living in the United States. The climate is beautiful, amenities are many and accessible and there is a large like-minded community. It is a growing hub for Worldschoolers and those seeking a slower, simpler life. Since being in Bali, Ranan and another business partner have started helping other families relocate and create a life of their own design. They provide information, mentoring and relocation services. Listen in near the end of the episode where we share tips on different things you can do to get started on your travel or relocation . Where will they go from here? What would you do if life suddenly shifted for you? If it caused you to take a look at your values and what you were actually living for? Would you make a change? If not, what do you think would be your biggest hold back? I appreciate the honesty Ranan spoke with and the joy that you can hear in his voice for the life they have now. And it sounds like his wife is back to good health, enjoying their terrific lifestyle in Bali. Recently Ranan and his family had a chance to return to the US for a visit. During their stay, he and his wife saw life in North America again through new eyes. The pace was fast, life was nonstop and it was really apparent that their values have now changed. "Life is a gift and we need to celebrate now." Karen Ricks left me with many warm words of wisdom through this interview. Talking to Karen felt like I was catching up with an old friend that I had met in another time. We share many things in common. We are both women of colour in a mixed race marriage. With mixed race children. We have taught, lived and started families in Asia. We are Worldschoolers. (Although my long term travel is currently on hiatus). Our husbands are writers. I could go on. Karen is a Montessori teacher and Montessori School Founder. Mother and wife. A digital nomad and Culinary artist gifted in making learning and connection come to life in the kitchen. She tells us: play with your food.In this episode In this episode Karen shares her story on becoming global. They started with a one year plan to teach english in Japan. This turned into 10 years spanning 8 different countries and 4 different continents. From Japan to Italy. Italy to Mexico. From Mexico to Albania and many countries between. Karen starts by sharing her rich memories of Japan. What was it like as a mixed race American family that was "outside people's realm of experience"? Despite the differences, Karen and her family found a strong community in Japan. Then they felt the impact of the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami. It became the motivating force behind starting their International Montessori school."If that future is not promised, we need to do what we want to do, right now." Karen you are a reminder to seize the day.Digital Nomads How does a family afford to travel the world? Karen and her husband are digital nomads. They don't need a fixed address. Only a computer and internet access. Karen has found many unique ways to create a business around her many teaching skills. She teaches music online, figure skating, and cooking. I am most drawn to is her culinary community. In Japan Karen saw how drawn her families were to the daily lessons that she created in the kitchen. They explored the world through the kitchen. They discovered Cultures. Practiced Languages. Foods were created, sampled and brought into every lesson. Of course! Food is science, math and language. The process that is shared in cooking creates a rich learning environment. Karen has taken this global in her Play With Your Food Community.Play With Your Food Community Karen is empowering parents to embrace their role as their child's best teacher. She does this through cooking. The world she explores through her culinary life is remarkable. She not only helps parents cook with their children but helps them understand the reason why it's important. Where is the food sourced? What does it feel, taste, smell and look like? She says the kitchen is the playground, from the preparation to the clean up. In the Play With Your Food community it is about building bonds with your child. She centres it all around fun and play. Karen is all about being herself. This is something that world travel has taught her. She recognizes who she is, what she believes and what is important. And her desire to be fully present for every experience continues to grow. It is very rare to ever meet the person(s) who have inspired you to do what you love to do. How often does a young basketball player ever meet Michael Jordan, or a young astronaut ever meet Buzz Aldrin to say thank you? That is very rare. This year we sold our home, furniture, car, clothes, TVs and Nico’s favorite sippy cup to take our kids out of school and travel the world. We were inspired by a Facebook page called, "We are Worldschoolers" managed by Lainie Liberti and her son, Miro. She is partly responsible for helping us make the decision to travel the world and "Worldschool" our kids. We were thrilled to find out she was in Playa Del Carmen the same time we were there and reached out to her. We asked if we could have lunch with her and possibly do a podcast with her. We were ecstatic when she said yes. Ladies and gentlemen, this is our podcast with the person who helped steer our ship.... October is a feature month on Worldschoolers. This episode is Part 2 of the interview with Queenie Tan–Worldschooling mom, Entrepreneur, Educator, and International Speaker.Common Misconceptions of Worldschoolers Queenie tackles some of the common questions and misconceptions that Worldschoolers get asked. Do you miss not having a home to come back to? Is travelling full time detrimental for kids? Don’t you have to be extremely rich or win the lottery to worldschool or travel full time? Isn’t travelling with kids dangerous? The kids won’t be socializedCultural Traditions Hong Kong holds strong cultural norms and traditions. Work hard and long. Make money. Women traditionally don’t question or speak their mind. Kids do the same. Study hard in school for academic success. Queenie’s decision to worldschool bucked these traditions. It was hard decision to make. She thought these traditions were unique to her culture. But through travel she’s learning that these norms are not so different. All over the world people are trying to meet expectations that are not your own. There is a belief that work should be painful. It should not be fun. This is the problem that many seem to have with unschooling. They think that unschooling is not learning because the kids are having so much fun.Life Skills Queenie talks about the life skills kids need to thrive in the world today. Skills like entrepreneurial skills and financial literacy. Being able to take care of and provide for themselves. She is proud that her sons pay for their own travel with money they earn through their own businesses. They are under the age of 14. The other life skills that they are building are resiliency, adaptability and not being afraid to learn. These are more valuable life skills.”Get comfortable with the uncomfortable.” She says about her family “the more we expose ourselves to different things the more adaptable we are.”Hard Changes Queenie found the hardest change for her was slowing down. In Hong Kong the pace is extremely fast. She worked 4 jobs and worked non-stopped. Working that hard is a source of pride in Hong Kong. It is what everyone does.Future Plans What are their future plans? Will they return back to Hong Kong? Is there a different place they would like to settle? They have no plans to return to Hong Kong yet. Queenie understands that her oldest teen son may choose to be on his own in 5 years time or less. For now they are enjoying making their relationship stronger, building new community and connections and fully enjoying each place that they travel to. They feel each place they visit is their favourite. Queenie Tan – http://foongkwin.com/ Queenie’s Podcast Queenie Tan Asia’s Elite Parenting Coach
The Lockhart family is from Nova Scotia. They have 4 kids — two daughters that are 17 and 15 and two sons that are 13 and 10 years old. 5 Years ago Mia’s family reached a point where they wanted a change and they took action to make it happen. What they wanted was Experiences Over Things.“What You Own Owns You” Mia’s family started by simplifying everything. They cleaned out their house and cut down on things. Simplification gave them greater freedom in their life. They were no longer tied to their things. Mia’s husband then sold his business and they both started working online. They went from a quiet life in Nova Scotia to become a travelling family that camped across the United States for 4 months. The kids did well on the road and Mia felt that was a start to new experiences for them. After the 4 months on the road they they became more serious about downsizing — cleaning out everything and getting their belongings down to a minimum. With less to tie them down they decided to relocate. To Vancouver.Vancouver Mia and her family moved to Vancouver, rented a home and enrolled in school. Enrolling their kids in school in Vancouver was an important learning experience for them. Being in a new school, and new city, with new classmates was another opportunity for her kids to step out of their comfort zones. It gave them a chance to find a new part of themselves away from the pre-defined roles of their old home life. But by now they were bitten by the travel bug and they longed to be back on the road. They prepared for their next destination — Costa Rica. This was their chosen destination because they had travelled there before, were familiar with the area and loved the “pura vida” culture. The culture is close enough to home that it was not a large culture shock, and it is also a place where they feel safe with their teenage girls. Costa Rica Mia and her family planned to spend 3 months in Costa Rica and when I caught up with her at the beginning of the summer they had just returned to Nova Scotia from this trip. When they had announced their first road trip across the United States the kid’s teachers were extremely helpful. They sent the kids school work which the kids completed and then emailed back to their teachers. This worked well for their family life on the road. The biggest advantage that later became clear to the kids was that even though they would only work for an hour or 2 everyday they came back to school ahead of their classmates.Travelling Family and Online School The timing for Costa Rica was a bit different because at this point her daughters were now in high school. Mia looked at options for schooling while in Costa Rica and decided to use online school through the province of BC. It was important to Mia to have all options available, especially university. This way they could keep up with credits and curriculum. Mia also liked the idea of not having to take on the curriculum and teaching herself. This meant they scheduled their own days and managed their own time. This choice brought pros and cons. The online program offered them flexibility to complete school within their own time frame- they knew what they needed to get done and they knew they could do it a lot faster than in school. They had to become self reliant, finding answers on their own. But, for her older daughters in high school it became more about getting the work done, not about building interest and curiosity. The girls also missed having the social interaction to work with classmates. For the youngest of Mia’s kids online school was centered around an exploration style which allowed them to apply more of the local region and life to their lessons.Returning Home But Staying Nomadic They loved their life in Costa Rica. The warm weather, the swim breaks in between book time. They also met many people from different backgrounds while living there. Expats, Worldschoolers, and European students learning Spanish on their Gap year. But after being away from Nova Scotia for quite a long time Mia’s kids started to miss their friends from home. They decided instead of returning to Vancouver or extending their stay in Costa Rica they would go back to Nova Scotia and give their kids a chance to reconnect with home and friends. They are keeping the title “nomadic” because they know they are going to go back on the road. Coming back did have some challenges. Travelling brought about changes and growth, especially for her teenagers. They had seen and experienced many things that their peers back home had not. While in Costa Rica Mia’s oldest daughter decided to go off of social media for a while. “Teenagers judge each other by their Instagram accounts.” Her daughter is really trying to go against it. Costa Rica was “enough space for her to be away to do those kind of things which you can’t always do when you’re right in the middle of a peer group”. They miss their friends, but at the same time they grew. Travelling gives more space to do what you want to do, not what everybody thinks is cool. What has Changed Travel wet their appetites and opened their minds to possibilities. The family now sees travel can be more of a way of life. And they don’t need to have a big home and place. Travel has also changed ideas around learning for them. Learning has become curiosity based. What are you interested in? How can you make it interesting? What would it be, where would you take it? Mia, her husband and 4 children are currently back in Nova Scotia. Her oldest daughter plans to take a Gap Year after finishing high school this year. For their next family adventure they are looking towards Eastern Europe and then possibly Asia.
