She was a Murrey Marder Nieman Fellow in Watchdog Journalism at Harvard University. Get her new book! They Poisoned the World Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals “Riveting . . . Blake's deft chronicle of one of the greatest moral scandals of our time [is] a book that none of us can afford to miss.”—The Washington Post A gripping investigation of the chemical industry's decades-long campaign to hide the dangers of forever chemicals, told through the story of a small town on the frontlines of an epic public health crisis. In 2014, after losing several friends and relatives to cancer, an unassuming insurance underwriter in Hoosick Falls, New York, began to suspect that the local water supply was polluted. When he tested his tap water, he discovered dangerous levels of forever chemicals. This set off a chain of events that led to 100 million Americans learning their drinking water was tainted. Although the discovery came as a shock to most, the U.S. government and the manufacturers of these toxic chemicals—used in everything from lipstick and cookware to children's clothing—had known about their hazards for decades. In They Poisoned the World, investigative journalist Mariah Blake tells the astonishing story of this cover-up, tracing its roots back to the Manhattan Project and through the postwar years, as industry scientists discovered that these chemicals refused to break down and were saturating the blood of virtually every human being. By the 1980s, manufacturers were secretly testing their workers and finding links to birth defects, cancer, and other serious diseases. At every step, the industry's deceptions were aided by our government's appallingly lax regulatory system—a system that has made us all guinea pigs in a vast, uncontrolled chemistry experiment. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and tens of thousands of documents, Blake interweaves the secret history of forever chemicals with the moving story of how a lone village took on the chemical giants—and won. From the beloved local doctor to the young mother who took her fight all the way to the nation's capital, citizen activists in Hoosick Falls and beyond have ignited the most powerful grassroots environmental movement since Silent Spring. Humane and revelatory, this book will provoke outrage—and hopefully inspire the change we need to protect the health of every American for generations to come. Forever chemicals, also known as PFAS, are found in virtually every corner of the world, including in most people’s bodies. These synthetic compounds have been linked to a wide range of health issues — from infertility to cancer to neurological problems — even at low levels of exposure. In a new book, They Poisoned the World: Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals, investigative journalist Mariah Blake lays out how these toxic chemicals became so ubiquitous. Blake spoke with Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu about a group of unlikely activists fighting back against those responsible and offers practical tips to protect yourself. For some resources recommended by Blake, go to the National Science Foundation’s page on PFAS in drinking water.
In the latest episode of Unlocking Academia, Tarin Ahmed, the host, is joined by guest, William Jennings, a senior lecturer in French at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, and author of Dibia's World.: Life on an Early Sugar Plantation (Liverpool UP, 2023). William discusses the importance of names, voice and the community life of a hundred slaves on an early sugar plantation. Dibia's World follows the story of Dibia, an educated man in Africa, stolen across the sea and sold into slavery. He spent the rest of his life on a sugar plantation, where he worked with Agoüya, drank Aboré's rum, married Izabelle and had a son named Paul. This book tells the story of the community he lived in with a hundred others in a colonial outpost of the Caribbean. It depicts the everyday life of enslaved Africans and Native Americans in remarkable detail, showing their names, relationships, skills, health and interactions, as they contended with and resisted their enslavement. Most studies of plantation life examine well-established colonies in the century before abolition. This work provides a counterpoint by depicting the founding population of an African-American community in the early years of the industrial sugar plantation complex. Drawing on a planter's manuscript, shipping records, missionary accounts and seventeenth-century scraps of paper, Dibia's World will appeal to specialists as well as general readers interested in the early Atlantic world, Creole societies, slavery and African-American history. Episode 112: In this episode, Kate is joined by journalist Mariah Blake to discuss her new book, ‘They Poisoned the World: Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals.' Together, they trace the buried history of PFAS and forever chemicals—synthetic chemicals first developed in the 1930's—that would go on to saturate everything from firefighting foam to clothes to town water supplies, with devastating consequences for public health. The conversation centers on the story of Hoosick Falls, New York, where a small community uncovered widespread PFAS contamination in their drinking water and began a fight for justice. Kate and Mariah explore the regulatory ignorance that allowed this to happen, the role of DuPont and other chemical giants in shaping the response, and how communities are rising to meet the crisis. They discuss how outrage becomes a catalyst for environmental change, and how ordinary people—farmers, military families, and local organizers—are now on the front lines of the PFAS fight. Through the lens of Blake's reporting, this episode is a powerful look at what happens when chemical convenience collides with human health, and how resilience grows in even the most contaminated ground.Find Mariah:They Poisoned the World: Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals by Mariah BlakeInstagram: @mariahcblakeX: @mariahcblakeSupport Kate: PatreonSubstackPayPal-Leave a One Time TipResources MentionedPlastic List created by Nat Friedman: https://www.plasticlist.org Plastic: A Toxic Love Story by Susan Freinkel Dr. Max Liboiron — https://civiclaboratory.nl Time Bombing the Future by Rebecca Altman Richard Rhodes Making of Atomic BombRelated Episodes:Episode 85 with John Vaillant on Consumption, the Petrochemical IndustryEpisode 82 with Jay Owens on Dust, Testing the Bomb, Our Polluted WorldEpisode 83 with Helen Czerski on the OceanSponsored By:REDMOND REAL SALT: Use code MINDBODYSOIL_15 for 15% off at Redmond.lifeAffiliates:

Matthew 5:14-16. When light is absent, darkness takes over. However, when light is present, it stands out and alleviates darkness. A light doesn't need an announcement that it's a light. It just is. And when a light is present, its presence is obvious. In the midst of darkness in our world, Jesus calls us to be the light. In this message we talk about tangible ways we can ensure our light is shining in the darkness. For upcoming events and important announcements at Skyline, visit our Facebook page for the latest details! If you'd like to check out more resources, get to know Skyline Church, or donate to our ministry and missions please visit www.skylineofallon.com. Our life - our world - can be rich…and it can also be a bitch. We walk the terrain of multiple - maybe infinite - grounds. We move in and out of these overlapping spaces. They are not geographical territories, but rather various ways we encounter our human condition as our mind and its world engage in the playful exchange we call, ‘experience.'

It's the story that everyone will be talking about today, but the question is; was it even real? (:30) What time do you get up in the morning? A new study shows that there is a correct time of day to get up if you want to be successful! (4:30) The Chris Rock/Will Smith scandal is all over the news, but at least one positive thing came out of it! A nice wholesome life lesson from none other than Denzel Washington. (11:16) Every news story these days has people on both sides of the debate and the Oscar's scandal is no exception. Anna and Raven decided to ask the callers; who was at fault in the Chris Rock/Will Smith situation? (14:55) The jury is still out on who was to blame for all the drama at last night's Oscar's, but the debate made Anna curious. Would it have been as big a deal if it had been Jada who had hit Chris Rock? (26:02) Kevin and Andrea have a teenage daughter. She was recently humiliated when her friends pointed out that Kevin (her dad) was following sexy models on TikTok. Kevin was unaware that anyone could see who he was following but is unphased. He's an adult, he can follow whoever he wants. Andrea says not only is it embarrassing to their daughter, but it's also embarrassing to her! She wants him to delete his account all together. He clearly doesn't understand how social media works. He refuses. What do you think? (37:04) Emelda has a shot at $3900! Can she beat Raven in pop culture trivia and claim the prize or will the jackpot rise to new record highs? (45:40)

Happy New Year! It's 2021 and we're grateful you're here. We made it! Episode 8 is presented in honor of 2022. If we can all just hold on until 2022... These are strange times, resolutions or declarations seem almost trivial or hollow...so make up some intentions instead! Taking a break from serene enlightenment, Host Stephanie Wood, and occasional guest host, bestie Tanya Nagaraja, talk through the surreal world of Pandemic Life, self-image and life on screen, the unsustainability of manifesting the personal grooming habits of a french princess, and of course...hair ties. They speak with candor that only hints at suppressed trauma, and the kind of laughter you can only share with a friend who truly gets you. Grab a nice cup of whatever (tea, coffee, absinth), relax, and explore with us. Maybe you'd like a snack, too. Then join Stephanie Wood, and be casually witchy—only if you want to. (Maybe someday people who want to be witchy will be like “I'm such a Stephanie” and the not-so-witchy but supportive friends will be like “I'm such ‘The Other Chick” but then when the friend who says she's a Stephanie agrees , The Not-Stephanie feels a little unseen and make a big show of doing a French twist in her hair to make a point. Anyway, we're both cool, so whatevs.) I hope you love it, because I LOVE YOU!- Steph P.S. Secular - denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis. P.P.S My unanticipated habit isn't wearing glasses. It's Minecraft. My undersea base and my tamed wolf and chicken are pretty dope. We're Stephanie Wood and Tanya Nagaraja—Proud Veteran mamas on a mission to foster inclusive/intersectional wellness and woo with a platform built for elevation and powered by allyship and accessibility. Wellness is nothing when it doesn't start with “We” (I'm workshopping that, be kind) We met while deployed to Iraq in 2009 (Tanya here, let me just zhuzh that up a bit) We met in “The Cradle of Civilization” at the intersection of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in ancient Mesopotamia, notable exports are Hammurabi and hot weather, very close to the ruins of the Tower of Babel… That's right, two babes stranded in Babylonia...we...we… well, I walked into the plywood Army shack , we locked eyes and I was like “OMG we're both fiercely independent, brilliant and adorable even in this dusty neutral palette! Let's buy overpriced shampoo and be friends forever, k?”And then she said “ok”, and here we are.. (ok, back to Stephanie) We're just two smart, unique, and hilarious women making our way through this world. ( maybe peeking into a few others along the way via communion with pan-dimensional movers of energy...you know, our Woo experts and guests.) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeode/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeode/support
