In today's episode I'm talking with Lainie Liberti about the concept of "partnership parenting." Lainie's parenting philosophy is that parenting, especially during the teen years, should be a collaboration between you and your teen, based on a set of core values; both the parents' and the teens'. The point of this effort is to build a strong connection, mutual respect and openness. If you don't know who Lainie is, she's a teen mentor, co-founder (with her 24-year-old son, Miro) of Project World School and the author of Seen, Heard and Understood: Parenting and Partnering with Teens for Greater Mental Health, in which she discusses the concept of partnership parenting and so much more. Lainie traveled the world with her son while "schooling" him, and is considered a pioneer in the "worldschooling" movement" and very much practiced what she preaches (wait until you hear what her son says about her!) She's mentored hundreds of teens and studied parenting, psychology, emotional intelligence, etc. for years and really knows her stuff. You're going to appreciate her fresh perspective on parenting your teens.Show Notes and TranscriptFind our FREE Parenting Guides Here"I just wanted to let you know that I'm so thankful for your podcast! ...I'm so happy I discovered it!" A question we don't ask enough is what we want from education. Of course we all want well-rounded young adults when they're done with school, people who can become productive members of our society and who also have a healthy worldview. But our schools are not preparing our youth in this way. Students are graduating from high school with a narrow mindset because they haven't experienced anything other than what's in their community and the four walls of their classrooms. When the recession happened in 2008, Lainie Liberti knew it was an opportunity to make a change for the benefit of her then 9-year-old son. So they hit the road to learn in the real world. They've since visited countless countries, started a business around world schooling, and both have come out changed in all the best ways. This week on the podcast, Lainie is sharing her experience with parenting and teaching in the real world and how she and her son are supporting other families to do the same. About Lainie Liberti: Lainie is a best-selling author, international speaker, community leader, teen mentor, and alternative education advocate who helped to spearhead the thriving world schooling movement. As a result of the 2008 California economy crash, Liberti closed her Los Angeles-based branding agency. Liberti and her then 9-year-old Miro decided to “be the change” instead of victims and chose a life of adventure. After, selling all of their possessions, Lainie and her son hit the road for what was to be a one-year adventure in 2009. After thirteen years and almost 50 countries, the pair calls Guanajuato, Mexico their home. Lainie chose to educate her son Miro through the world, facilitating rich experiential learning, cultural immersion, volunteering and leadership as his school. We call this world schooling. Lainie co-foundered Project World School with her son in 2012. Liberti designs and co-facilitates the Project World School teen retreats as month-long immersive learning communities to support self-directed teens from around the world. Over the last 8 years, Lainie has facilitated 20+ international retreats for almost 100 teens, learning through cultural immersion, examining personal values and exploring world views. In addition, Lainie founded Project World School Family Summits, where she's produced 10 in-person international conferences for hundreds of families across Europe, Asia and Mexico since 2016. They've travelled extensively, given a Ted talk together on worldschooling, and they now both live in Mexico. Lainie has recently published a book about partnership parenting with teenagers, and she and her son run twice-yearly retreats for teenagers. Today, Lainie shares her experiences of travelling with her son, her realisations around learning and education, and how, as parents, we have the obligation to dig deep into our own conditioning in order to allow our children to be free to be their authentic selves. And, of course, Lainie shares some of her insights around parenting teenagers. It is very rare to ever meet the person(s) who have inspired you to do what you love to do. How often does a young basketball player ever meet Michael Jordan, or a young astronaut ever meet Buzz Aldrin to say thank you? That is very rare. This year we sold our home, furniture, car, clothes, TVs and Nico’s favorite sippy cup to take our kids out of school and travel the world. We were inspired by a Facebook page called, "We are Worldschoolers" managed by Lainie Liberti and her son, Miro. She is partly responsible for helping us make the decision to travel the world and "Worldschool" our kids. We were thrilled to find out she was in Playa Del Carmen the same time we were there and reached out to her. We asked if we could have lunch with her and possibly do a podcast with her. We were ecstatic when she said yes. Ladies and gentlemen, this is our podcast with the person who helped steer our ship.... In this episode, I finish my prior interview with world traveling woman/worldschooling momma, Lainie Liberti. She's taken the daring path of listening to her inner voice to leave the conventional way of raising a kiddo and traded that for taking her son around the world as a means of learning. There are a million good ways to parent and learn. You'll love hearing this episode (part 2 of 2). Find out more about Lainie and her wordschooling resources at her website: www.raisingmiro.com (Music: www.bensound.com) 00:00: Opening Preparing for Life via the Experience of Travel What he’s really learned is how to problem solve - how to advocate for himself - teamwork - responsibility. Not because these were lessons that we created and said ‘here open up a workbook and figure this out’ it’s because those are the lessons of real life and they were in context. - Lainie There’s arts, culture language learning. There's geology, geography, agriculture. Astronomy. Everything is interwoven and tied into the experiences were having as we're exploring new cultures. - Lainie Context is what anchors the learning into a child. Let me be immersed in the experience and I will absorb it. -Stacey What It’s like Being in Other Cultures (Hint: It Starts in the Home) A lot of the fear based programming are not a part of our realities anymore. The moment that we started to connect to people, loosen our grip, look people in the eye and smiling and connect, and even though we don't speak the same language were both human. We both want the same things we both want happiness and health. That kind of understanding broke down those ideas, fear, the programming that was not my messages or words. I eventually felt that people everywhere were just like me. We had more in common than we had differences. - lAINIE Personal Experiences and Stories of Human Kindness - Conversations with Syrian Refugee, a Jehovah's Missionary, and an Ex Prisoner When you have to bring healing to someone in your family that's had a negative experience - to help them not to judge ALL by then ONE (and still validate the negativity of that experience and help them walk through) it confronts that thing inside us that goes wow - I had a negative experience and that's caused me to label a whole certain group of people this way and now im confronted to examine that too as I help my son to examine that as well. - Stacey Just because you had a negative experience - there’s an important moment to rest yourself and still be open to the goodness that's possible in the next experience. - Stacey The world is made of individual and we always must keep our eye on hat. People do good things and people do bad things - doesn't mean that cultures are good or cultures are bad, doesn't mean that people are good or people are bad - its the actions that were responding to. We need to keep this perspective straight and not so easily fall into racism, or anything else that is damaging to our humanity. - Lainie When we judge against a culture or whole people group we then close ourselves to the goodness that exists in the people from that place or culture. - Stacey Fostering Independence with the Partnership Paradigm We function on a basis on consensus. The first step of learning independence and experiencing independence is learning how to advocate for yourself. And underst that when you're advocating for yourself there is a consideration of how that affects the whole community. - Lainie Advice to the Person That Wants to Begin (Hint: It Starts in the Home) It’s very easy to maintain the drudgery of your day to day life. I read a quote recently that really spoke to me: “Travel is the adventure that takes the taste of bitterness out of your soul.” I know that sometimes a good by product of a traveling experience is that it can bring about a healing and a joy and a revitalization of what you're here to do and what's truly important. - Stacey Tapping the Humanitarian in Lainie - The Cult of Scarcity We tend to live with this idea that there is not enough. That there is scarcity. That we have to work harder to get what's ours because somebody next to us may take it. That is what drives us from not being present in our own lives. The idea that there’s not enough creates more fear. It separates us from the needs and preferences. If we realize that we do have enough, that there IS enough, that what we have is just perfect for this moment, it’ll stop that cult of scarcity. It'll stop us from being separated from one another. Separation is the problem. - Lainie Probably the greatest illusion that we have in our society and humanity is that were separated, when were really together. Were really united by some divine and universal thread. - Stacey The shift is becoming in service to others. That’s the remedy. - Lainie How to find Lainie: Raising Miro on the Road of Life Global Education through World Travel http://www.raisingmiro.com Project World School Inspiring Temporary Learning Communities for Teens & Young Adults Check out the 2017 Schedule Now! http://ProjectWorldSchool.com Watch our TEDx talk called Making The World Our Classroom For the Love of Learning - Voices of the Alternative Education Movement Host- Weekly talk show broadcasting on CCN Monday 8-10pm EST http://ForTheLoveofLearningShow.com

I just consider myself as somebody who is capable and willing to listen to my intuition and inspiration at the same time.” -Lainie The ability to say: Why do we have to do things this way, why do I have to live my life in this way? Became a habit that I lived. One of the things that I help empower people to find is the empowerment inside of themselves to have, not only freedom, but confidence to question things. - Lainie In some ways it does require a certain bravery to listen to yourself in a culture that is trying to have you anesthetized to your inner inklings so you can keep the mill going, keep with the flow. - Stacey 17:00 On Criticism and finding the gift within Instead of giving in to these sorts of criticisms I just listened and nodded my head and thanked everybody for their input. I let them know I would do my best to try and integrate their concerns into our travel and ask them if they could wish us well. Instead of battle, this seemed like the best approach. - Lainie “A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an argument”. - Leanord Ravenhill It’s ok to love people and not be in a relationship with them. - Laine 24:00 A brief history of World Schooling The vision that I had and the inspiration has grown. So I don’t feel like I’m out there alone anymore. I’m about there with 34000 of my best friends now. -Lainie Risking Adventure is a high value of mine and a phrase I use all the time from a Philosopher named Edmund Friedman. He said that the mind can only conceive certain things. It can only imagine so far. Once you risk adventure then what happens is the brain opens up in ways that it couldn't by only imagining. Then a whole other world of options and possibilities opens up to us. - Stacey 28:00 Challenges: Anticipated & Actual “One of the things I had to really address was my addiction to being busy and my addiction to being productive. I realized underneath was the thought that I am worthless unless I am producing something of value. It’ ok to actually just be.” Lainie The quiet became so loud that I was actually able to hear the crazy conversation in my head. I went on a journey to go on a practice of stillness, because I got called to rest. It was so provoking to my brain. It can hit our identity vs our role and how in society we so confuse those. We confuse who we are with what we do. Then when you go to an area where there is more space more quiet and more time, for me, it really provoked so many questions and it brought up so many voices that I think I couldn’t hear because i was in such a busy stream that the noise of my life drowned out the beliefs that were driving me. - Stacey Presence is so important. Worldschooling and travel was my vehicle to find it. But it doesn't have to be yours. - Lainie It was the small moments that changes. The nuanced moments that we consider most special out of our journey together. - Lainie 36:30 Benefits: Expected & Actual I had this belief that education was something only somebody else could give us. I believed I wasn't qualified to educate my child. Then I discovered unschooling (Benefit) My shift in my relationship to the idea of education. I started to realize that what we were doing was learning, gaining more information, being engaged, being present, and learning that was education. And that worked for me. My whole world changed and the expectations lead us to new expectations. Those expectations opened up new avenues, new doors, and new ways of understanding, and new ways of being. That was the true gift. - Lainie To Be Continued in Part 2 of the interview with Lainie Liberti... Our panel for our premiere episode includes Marley Richards, Neil Karkhanis, and Martin Harvey-Olson. The topic that they have chosen to discuss is the 2016 US Presidential Election. This is such a HUGE topic, our panelists have SO much to discuss. They plan to discuss Election Night, the Electoral College, the allegations of voter suppression and fraud, the inauguration, the ongoing marches and protests, the new president's first week in office, and so much more. If you tune in live, you can ask your own questions as well! All three of our panelists have been featured on multiple episodes of another CCN show, For the Love of Learning, with Lainie Liberti. In today’s interview we speak with Martin and Lorena Cagnotti – two expat Argentinians who made the decision 13 years ago to move from their home town of Buenos Aires to the hubbub of Mexico City. After 7 years there they have now settled into the idyllic seaside community of Playa del Carmen where they are raising their two children through unschooling. We met up with them to discuss living in one of the world’s largest cities, why they moved to Playa del Carmen and to talk about many of the myths and fears round home schooling and unschooling children and why they feel it has been the best thing for their development. You can follow their adventures and ask them questions about living in Playa del Carmen at their website, http://thenomadicadventures.com . If you’re a family and into home exchanging with other families of similar age then check out their new home swapping website www.familyhomeexchange.com What I learned from speaking with Martin and Lorena: Mexico City has an unfair reputation as an unsafe place to visit. The Cagnotti’s loved their time there and had no issues with safety. Mexico is a city of extremes in wealth and poverty yet all seem to live together side by side with no ill feeling or tension. Playa del Carmen offers a quieter lifestyle than the busier party town of Cancun only an hour away. If you’re after a slower pace of life it’s certainly an option with an increasing number of expat families and retirees settling there. Like any holiday town it has it’s tourists areas and local areas and it’s important to get out and about and explore beyond the beaches if looking to shift there (if you want to know more about Cancun check out our interview with Jen and Jay Kerwood) Unschooling is not about leaving your children to run amuck. It is really about letting them discover what they are interested in then showing them how to learn the relevant skills to help them. By understanding why they need to learn and how to practically apply it, it gives their learning more purpose and gives them a reason to learn. Unschooling or home schooling doesn’t mean your children are outside the curriculum indefinitely. In Mexico they are still able to pass exams that allow them to tick the right boxes for further education and as Lainie Liberti also spoke about more and more colleges and universities are accepting children who have been raised in an unschooled environment. As Alyson Long and Andrew and Daryl Grant will also testify to unschooling or home schooling does not leave your children lacking for social interaction. The Cagnotti kids still attend classes in art and music and interact more often with other children who are being home schooled or unschooled than they would have done in the classroom environment. They love what unschooling has offered them and wouldn’t change what they are doing.

Today, you'll be hearing from Lainie Liberti (and briefly from her son Miro Siegel) of Project Worldschool. They will be digging into some deeper concepts on how to facilitate worldschooling with teens. For those of you who don't have teenagers yet, don't fret. Lainie's message teaches us about how worldschooling can apply to children of all ages. NomadTogether.com/WorldSchooling
Lainie Liberti is mom to 16 year-old Miro. They backed into unschooling in 2009 through what was meant to be a one-year mother-and-son backpacking trip. Now in their seventh year of travelling, Lainie is co-producer and host of the weekly online show, For the Love of Learning: Voices of the Alternative Education Movement, and she […]
The economic crisis of 2008 was a catalyst for so many of our interviewees to up sticks and hit to road. Lainie Liberti’s marketing business worked with green entities and non-profit organizations who were among the first to feel the pinch. With her business struggling and her 9 year old son Miro not enjoying his school environment Lainie decided they would hit the road for a 12 month adventure through South America. 8 months into the trip they both realized they were loving it enough to continue but savings were starting to dwindle and Lainie knew she needed a more permanent means of educating Miro. She discovered unschooling and became an instrumental advocate for children being world schooled from the environment in which they travel. 8 years on she and her teenage son are still loving their South American adventure. We caught with Lainie in Mexico where she shares the experiences of what made her hit the road and how their unique partnership and approach to education has provided Miro with an environment in which to thrive. You can find out more about their adventures at their travel blog http://www.raisingmiro.com and learn more about the world of unschooling at http://projectworldschool.com What I learned from this interview: Whether you believe in life outside the education system or not this interview is worth listening to. Lainie has not only gone against the normal approach to education – what she calls radical unschooling – but has thrown the normal mother/child relationship on its head with the partnership arrangement the two have to travel. Everyone has their own opinion on what is right for them but there is little doubt, in Lainie’s case, that she considers it has been a success in raising Miro. Other interviewees such as Talon Windwalker and Alyson Long can vouch for the benefit that unschooling and world schooling has offered. A blonde woman and a child in South America sounds like a recipe for danger and many people warned Lainie before leaving that she was taking a large risk. In most cases these people were well meaning but were not speaking from personal experience. In 8 years of travel the pair have had one break in – something that may have happened just as easily in Los Angeles. Unschooling is becoming more accepted by colleges and universities and doesn’t mean children have to turn their back on higher education if they go down this path. Even ivy league schools are starting to look at unschooled enrolees who often approach their higher education with more enthusiasm and better background knowledge than their mainstream counterparts.
Lainie Liberti and her nine-year-old son, Miro, left the U.S. in 2009 for what was going to be a one-year adventure—and they’re still going! Continuing their slow travel through Central and South America, they allow inspiration to be their compass. Along the way they’ve taken a global approach to education, using the world as their classroom.
