In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Episode Summary:In this raw and reflective episode of Unwritten Chapters, I open up about the complicated trauma that comes not from the battlefield, but from the living room. From family. From silence. As a veteran, former paramedic, and survivor of PTSD, I share a personal account of emotional abuse, gaslighting, and betrayal—specifically the kind that occurs within family systems. This isn't a story about enemies; it's about the pain of being invalidated by those who were supposed to protect you. It's about choosing to walk away from family members who refuse accountability. About setting boundaries for your mental health and your recovery.Whether you're in addiction recovery, navigating complex PTSD, or struggling with toxic family relationships, this episode offers solidarity and insight. If you've ever felt unseen, unheard, or unworthy in the eyes of the people you should've been able to trust, this one's for you.

This episode we are joined by Simi Lindgren Founder of Yuty. Some of you may recognise Simi from our special episode on fundraising as an underrepresented founder, where she was joined by two other incredible guests. But we wanted to take the time to dive deeper into Simi's story and insights building an AI startup. Simi initially went to med school thinking that she would become a doctor. However, she soon realised that she wasn't there for the right reasons. This led her to dropping out of her degree and getting an internship at a magazine working in beauty, and ultimately leading her to following her own passions. Simi then built up her experience in the beauty industry, working in marketing communications where she matched brands and PRs with media celebrities and influencers. Having progressed really well, in 2020 she decided that it was time to do something herself, which led to the launch of Yuty.Founded in 2020, Yuty is a venture capital backed technology company that uses AI to redefine hyper-personalisation, transforming the way brands can engage with their customers. The app provides data backed product recommendations delivered through a quiz, in order to help all customers, regardless of race, gender or ability, to find the product that is right for them. Having had personal experiences of not feeling seen or understood, and not being able to find the right products, Simi wanted to create something that was accessible for all, and after teaching herself to code, Yuty was formed. This episode we discuss:Choosing a path for the wrong reasons and going off the “beaten path” despite pressure internally and from the familyWhy she went down the VC route with YutyChoosing an Investor Partner and how to manage themThe importance of constantly asking questionsAssumptions and why being curious is the ultimate founder traitPlus much much more!Links:Yuty website: https://www.yuty.me/

On the cusp of becoming a mother to three kids under 3, Adele certainly has her hands full in this season of life but her conviction to home educate her children is unwavering. In this, the final episode of season two, she share her naturally evolving journey from teaching as a career to staying at home to teach her own. SUMMARYThe story of how Adele and her family ended up moving to Tasmania at the tail end of COVID lockdowns Her reflections on her own catholic schooling where she thrived academically but struggled socially, underpinned by the stability of her home life which she credits to her mothers presence as a stay at home parent Teaching these days is not just teaching - there's so much that is thrown onto teachers which is not part of what they are trained to do, which is to teach the curriculum, and how this is contributing to burn out in the professionAs parents we put a lot of faith into someone we don't actually know very well to educate our kids but the important things we hold near and dear should be coming from usBeing a blended family with older step children who live interstate plays a big part in their choice to home educate in that they don't have to worry about conflicting school holiday schedules interfering with sibling relationships The roles she and her husband have opted for and how their dynamic works to everyones benefit in their familyWhy do we have to wait until they are 5 or 6? The importance of connecting and forming communities with other families of pre-homeschool aged kids Having two bright girls with a penchant to learn from a very young age informs her choice to homeschool having experienced first hand that kids who excel in school often get forgotten about “We want to be the ones that are guiding them and setting them up for life and for adulthood and we just feel like this is the best way to have the biggest impact on what kind of people they go out into the world as”If you want it badly enough you will find a way to make it workINSPIRATIONHold onto your kids - Dr Gordon Neufeld & Gabor MatéDumbing us Down - John Taylor GattoConsider asking your local library to order in a copy of these books if they don't already have them in their catalogueEmma @play_at_home_mummy Instagram Jules @storiesofplay Instagram Life Without School Podcast by Stark Raving DadCONNECT@homemakerhaven.blog InstagramHave you got a story to tell? When I first started my business, I searched for women in my position…People who were teaching how to effectively build a business, while simultaneously raising a young family. The overwhelming message I received was: to be this successful, you have to act like you don't have kids. And that was just not realistic for me then, and it is not realistic for working mothers, now. Working mothers have a never-ending cycle of what needs to be accomplished, vs. the amount of time you have to accomplish it. And, as a result, having an endless supply of unnecessary mom guilt because of it.In this episode, I chat with my client, Shiro Bergbauer, a life and mindset coach for moms, about all of the topics surrounding running a business with kids. We touch base on topics of mom guilt, to setting boundaries, and giving yourself permission to not get it right every single time. More importantly, you'll grab a potpourri of useful tips that you can implement into building a business with kids, with seamless ease. You'll learn:How it is important to understand your boundaries that you want to set for both yourself, and your familyWhy you need to give yourself permission to not be the mom that “does the most”How our kids don't need our quantity time, but our quality timeWhy understanding the difference between guilt vs. shame will help you to have more peace surrounding your businessFeatured on today's episode: Work with me in 2023! Have you ever tried to describe your blended family's unique challenges to a friend — only to be met with a blank stare because they simply didn't understand?Or maybe you felt judged by someone who just didn't get the reality of your family dynamics.Or somewhere along the way you were given advice that just wasn't helpful. Most of us living in blended family dynamics have been there — we often feel alone in our struggles. We might even start to believe that there's something wrong with us because no one around seems to be able to relate to what we're experiencing. But the truth is, you're not alone. I haven't done a solocast in a while, but when you talk, I listen, and this topic has been requested by many of you, so I decided to dedicate this episode to talk about navigating big life transitions with differently wired kids. Our family has gone through our fair share of big changes, which you'll hear all about in this episode, so this is something that I've spent a lot of time thinking about. Especially as a parent of a differently wired kid, I know that there are some extra challenges that might come up when their routines, environment, life circumstances, or supports change, and our kids are also more likely to be resistant to changes (even if they are beneficial). So today I'll be sharing the strategies I've personally found helpful while going through big transitions with Asher. In this episode, I talk about key things such as why being honest when communicating with your kid is so important to help them understand and process change, how being vulnerable can be a way to show support, how to validate our kids' feelings about the changes or transitions, and how to identify their concerns so you can make plans to address them in advance. I also share about what adjustment disorder is and the kind of extra support you might need during transitions. Tilt Parenting Founder & CEO Debbie Reber (MA) is a parenting activist, bestselling author, podcast host, and speaker. A certified Positive Discipline trainer and a regular contributor to Psychology Today and ADDitude Magazine, Debbie's most recent book is Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World. Debbie's Tilt Parenting Podcast is the top performing podcast for parents, caregivers, educators, and professionals raising and supporting neurodivergent children, and has more than 4 million downloads. In November 2018, she spoke at TEDxAmsterdam, delivering a talk entitled Why the Future Will Be Differently Wired. In the summer of 2020, she co-created the Parenting in Place Masterclass series.Things you'll learn from this episodeThe benefits and growth that can come from navigating big changes as a familyWhy honesty is so important when communicating with your child about big changesWhat to share versus what not to share with your child about the transitions you go throughHow to validate the big emotions and thoughts that big transitions can bring up in your childThe importance of doing your own work as a parent to be able to support our kids during transitionsWhat adjustment disorder is and the extra support you might need to help your child through oneHow being vulnerable with your kids can be really supportive for themIdentifying the concerns that our kids have and coming up with plans to address them in advanceCreating new routines to create security for our kids during big transitions For more info, visit: https://www.tiltparenting.com/session301Support the show
It's hard to evangelize close friends, harder even, with family. Today I'm offering some encouragement, and looking at the example of King Asa of Judah, whose own mother was an Asherah worshiper! Todd Friel: How to evangelize to your parents | WRETCHED RADIO, (start at 3:22) Ray Comfort - interview with Doreen Virtue: How to Evangelize Friends and Family "Why is it so uncomfortable to witness to our loved ones? Ray Comfort teaches us how to share the Gospel with our friends and family. It can be intimidating to discuss Jesus with unbelievers; however, we want to do everything we can to make sure that our loved ones have heard the good news of the Gospel. Sharing the Gospel is an act of love and courage, because we care about the eternal destiny of our friends and family." GotQuestions/Compelling Truth, essay: What is the key to evangelizing family? Researching and connecting with his ancestors affected Kael Sharman's life in more ways than he expected. Knowing those stories helped him feel grounded and connected him to the greater historical narrative of Canada. In this episode Kael shares:How researching his ancestors grounded him in a time of changeThe impact of colonialism on people who wanted a better life for their familyWhy he thinks studying family history has the power to heal nationsAbout Kael:After 20 years of teaching, more than a decade of historical research, and several years of genealogical research, Kael Sharman has a message that is timely in the current context of growing social and political divisions: Know your family stories. Understand who you are, where you came from, and how you got here. in his Podcast Maple Family Treehouse, Kael shares his family stories, which include infidelity, heartbreak, love, violence, ethnic cleansing, religious miracles, and just plain survival. The driving force behind sharing his stories has been to understand how his family stories have changed how he walks around North America as an aging, white, working-class trans man. Understanding where he came from has brought a new complexity to his understanding of who he is, and his own privilege. Kael has also found pride and validation for those aspects of himself that have been traditionally aligned with marginalization or oppression. Kael claims, that kind of shift can happen if you frame your family stories in the larger narratives of settlement and colonization.Connect with Kael:Website maplefamilytreehouse.squarespace.com Facebook @maplefamilytreehouseInstagram @maplefamilytreehouseTwitter @KaelSharman Episode Sponsor: Episode sponsored by Heather Murphy's signature 1:1 service, Resilience in Your Roots. You had no choice in the role a narcissistic parent created for you and assigned to you. You were stuck with it--while usually being quite unaware of it. It's just the way your family is, like it or not, right? NOW, in this episode, see your assigned role(s) so you can shed them and choose again! In episode #201 on pseudomutuality, I talked about how #Hijackals like to paint a public picture of perfection on their families, which creating a private place of pain at home, within the family. Hijackals don't like the assigned roles I talk about in this episode to show in any way. It becomes a big family secret to them. In fact, they will deny that these roles exist: "I love all of my wonderful children equally." Now, we know that's not true. In fact, sometimes, it's a question of if they love any of them...or, anyone except themselves. (That's a topic for another time, though.)In the episode, I mentioned these two definitions from Webster's dictionary. I'm including them here because some people think that scapegoats and black sheep are the same. Scott McGillivray is back for this second part of his amazing interview. Last time we talked about the nitty gritty of Scott’s investments, how he started to acquire houses, and building his empire. Now we’re touching more on the mindset of what makes Scott so successful, and how you can put yourself in his shoes. Many people may know Scott from his HGTV shows, but maybe you didn’t know he was once in a boy band. Seriously. He took dance classes, convinced his friends to join him, and sold out some shows, but the takeaway from this short-lived boy band was priceless. If you see someone else finding success with something, use their blazed trail to find success yourself. From his boy band, to being on student council, and even the passing away of a loved one, Scott learned valuable lessonsthat he took with him for the rest of his life, and now gets to share with the BiggerPockets audience.Scott goes on to share a story that made him pivot the direction of his life as a teenager, and lead him to become the real estate mogul he is today. Scott goes through his top pieces of advice for young people and proves how planting seeds for investments early leads to acres upon acres of residual fruits for decades to come.In This Episode We Cover:How Scott manages his hectic life between companies, shows, and familyWhy successful people aren’t afraid of failingWhat young or inexperienced investors should do when they feel scared of taking a riskWhy Scott says you “can’t lose money in real estate”The importance of talking to those who are older and have more experience than youScott’s top pieces of advice for young people just starting out their careersHow Scott runs his companies and what he’s doing to be a better leaderHow you can be the MVP of your company And So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets PodcastBiggerPockets book storeBooks Mentioned in this Show:E-Myth by Michael GerberBuilt to Sell by John WarrillowClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/show435

Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
If you've spent any time learning ways to parent a child (adolescent or adult) who's experimenting with drugs or alcohol, or who's in active addiction, you've likely heard about the concept of setting and holding boundaries, and about letting natural consequences happen when your child makes a bad decision. But how do you actually do those things when they feel confusing and hard?In this episode, I do a deep dive on these two strategies parents can use with Julie Jarvis, a brilliant and compassionate psychologist who has seen just about everything when it comes to addiction and substance use. Julie is a consulting psychologist for CMC:FFC - the talented team who wrote the book Beyond Addiction which has helped my, and so many families, learn how to live and heal through addiction in the family. We do a deep dive into several difficult topics and provide insights including:What makes Dr. Jarvis so passionate about working with people when they're struggling with addictionWhat is a parent's role in the healing process when a teen or young adult child is misusing substances? How the parenting skills that help a child in active addiction can also work with a teen who's just starting to experiment with substancesInformation on a hidden goldmine of resources parents can access freeReal-world scenarios dealing with boundaries and natural consequencesBoundaries - what they are, why they're important, and how to use them in your familyWhy a balance of boundaries and control are important for teens and young adults to haveNatural consequences - how they're tied to boundaries, how to think about them, and how to live with them (it can be really hard)How brain development plays a role in your teen or young adult's substance use and decision makingThe role of communication in making boundaries and natural consequences effectiveThe role and importance of self-care for parentsIf you're a mom who needs strength, hope, and support while your child is experimenting with or addicted to drugs or recovering from addiction, please join our private, positive online community, The Stream, at www.brendazane.com/thestream.Download my free ebook “HINDSIGHT: 3 Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Addicted to DrugsSupport for Hopestream comes from:Ritual. If you've read any personal development/self-help book out there, you know the importance of gratitude. It sounds simple, but there's a little more to it than just saying what you're grateful for (though that's a big part of it). What about those days where everything wrong is just glaring right at you, and you're really struggling? Do you brush those feelings aside and keep on with the gratitude? Nope, that's what toxic positivity is called. My guest Mollie and I chat about this very topic. We also talked about:The differences between a lack mindset, versus an abundance mindset The work-life “balance” - is that even a thing? (hint: I don't think so...it's more of a blend versus a balance, imo)The feeling of being maxed out, and how gratitude can help to get out of those feelingsThe stigma around MLM, but how joining one can work beautifully for you and your familyWhy the key to starting a gratitude practice is to not have any, zero, outcomes attached Connect with MollieIG: @mollsjimmar BOOKS/RESOURCESQuantum Success by Christy WhitmanAtomic Habits by James ClearMach II with Your Hair on Fire by Richard Bliss BrookeQuantum Energy/Enneagram Coach Whitney Ellison's IG: @wellisonenterprises Find me on IG: @whatabout_themama

Chanel Cleeton's two richly imagined dual time stories of Cuban America are break through best sellers, with the first, Next Year in Havana, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club choice. But Chanel's put in a full apprenticeship writing contemporary romance before she enjoyed “overnight success.” Hi there I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today Chanel talks about the family history behind her books and how a note on a CIA file inspired the plot for her most recent book, When We Left Cuba. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Why Chanel switched from romance to historical fictionHow 'being a Reese Witherspoon choice' worked for herHow writing the book changed her appreciation of familyWhy she thinks 'luck' is an important factor in her career2019 - a great year for new booksHow law school 'drove' her to writing Where to find Chanel Cleeton: Website: www.chanelcleeton.com Facebook: @AuthorChanelCleeton Twitter: @chanelcleeton Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chanelcleeton/ What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: Hello there Chanel and welcome to the show it's great to have you with us.J Chanel: [00:00:06] Thank you so much for having me. I'm thrilled to be here. Meeting author Chanel Cleeton Jenny: [00:00:10] I can see from reading the two Cuban books and looking online at some of your other work, that you might feel a little bit like one of those people who is now described as an "overnight success." Because the Cuban books have really taken center stage. The first one of them Next Year in Havana became a Reese Witherspoon book club choice. But you've done a lot of writing before those books. So it's one of those cases of "many years work" to become an "overnight success." Is that right? Chanel Cleeton - author Chanel: [00:00:48] Yes. I had written about 10 contemporary romances before I published Next Year in Havana. So definitely I had been writing for a bit, but I still just feel very fortunate about how everyone's embraced the books and really; just been so supportive. Jenny: [00:01:03] Yes. You're a New York Times and a USA Today bestselling author. You've also got an impressive academic record. But if we went back to the beginning, was there a "Once Upon a Time" moment when you decided that you wanted to write fiction? And if so what was the catalyst for it? Chanel: [00:01:25] I think law school was really probably one of the driving factors in me deciding to write fiction. I will be honest. I didn't really enjoy it very much and realized it wasn't a good fit for me. It wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. And I started thinking about the things that I was most passionate about and while I'd never really considered being a writer I've always been a really big reader. [00:01:46] I mean there's not a time in my life that I can remember not having a book in my hands and I really just thought about how amazing it would be to have a career where I would get to work with books in any capacity. So I really just started taking it more seriously and I wrote a manuscript and was really fortunate that everything was able to come together. Jenny: [00:02:09] That's fantastic. You've mentioned you've written 10 contemporary romances and I think they're arranged in two sets of trilogies, aren't they? There's one called Wild Aces which is about men who fly airplanes. Then there's Capital Confessions and International Schools. And also one romantic suspense novel. So what made you decide to switch to do dual timeline historic fiction? Romance to historical fiction Chanel Cleeton romance Chanel: [00:02:36] I was really at a crossroads in my career as you mentioned, you know. Subscribe: iTunes | Android | RSS Pierre Couvillion is a rare expert in Sanskrit, mantras and using sound to pierce the veils of your mind, body and soul. Most of us do not know how to use our own voice to express what we honestly feel. Even fewer of us know how to use sounds to heal, relax and fuel personal growth. With over two decades of live experience in Sanskrit, Pierre takes this ancient mystical knowledge and makes it easy to understand and easy to benefit from in modern living. He offers clear practices and techniques for accessing the power found in mantras. Sanskrit mantras are encoded with specific vibrational frequencies. When you use a particular mantra correctly you can tune into its specific energy and its power. Mantras can be used to gain higher perspective, calm the nerves, steady the mind, and clear dullness, to active the body, connect to your soul, for holistic healing and many more real world applications. Sanskrit has no traceable history and is considered the oldest recorded language on Earth. The power of Sanskrit is in allowing the individual a personal journey through sound from the inside out. This journey creates an opportunity to discover your own voice; to reclaim the power of your own sound. Sanskrit is a technology where words are organized based on how the palette strikes the brain. The meter and tones used in Sanskrit are designed to help you learn sounds which already are inside you. This is stored energy most of us are not using. We are literally missing out on resources already at our disposal. The use of mantras becomes the activator for this stored energy, stimulating its flow in our life. Pierre shows us how to produce sounds which match the vibrations of what generates authentic fulfillment. His expert voice guides the practice of cultivating your own sound using the underlying current of frequencies and the ancient wisdom of Sanskrit. When using this technology the powers a mantra contains become available to you. Pierre offers a practice to awaken your native spiritual energy and have it flow with ease. Traditionally mantras are thought to be a key part of stimulating higher levels of consciousness. They help deepen self understanding and the connection to all life. Sanskrit teaches using language to become more aware. Sound opens the doors to life around us leading to ultimate living and fulfillment. Pierre believes you need to go try it for yourself and not take his word for it. Listen in with Pierre as he pulls back the esoteric veil of Sanskrit, mantras and reveals the keys to using this ancestral technology in your own life…Here’s What Else You Will Get From Pierre’s InterviewThe windows of language and how to look through themHow to step into a culture in its true manifestationAn easy to follow mantra for removing your own inner obstaclesWhy singing is important to lifeWhy you should be singing no matter how you think you soundThe five mouth positions and how sounds affects the brainWhat happens when you have achieved everything you have ever wantedHow to wake up your inner child and why it’s so important to do soWhat are the gardening traditions and how you can benefit from themWhy tones in Sanskrit carry more meaning and powerTools to disconnect from thinking and connect with what you are feelingMantras you can start with and what vibrations they carryThe first steps to activating your own true voiceWhat steps you can take to connect to the greatness of your personal lineageThe real reason why every person should know the Sanskrit alphabetA great tip for yoga teachers to apply in classA map for your own inner experience with soundWhat is the true language of sacred spellsRealizing the importance of elders on your pathUsing sound meditation to invoke the best process for your lifeWhy different sounds come from different parts of the paletteThe first three basic mouth positions for any mantraHow you can better understand the subtleties and nuances of mantrasDiscover the tool of sound to help invoke health and wealth for your business and familyWhy deers shake after near death encounters and what this has to do with human lifeHow to go beyond limits to be truly happyAnd much, much more…Books, Links, Movies and Other Resources Mentioned In This Episode:www.ayurveda.comAwaken (Movie about Yogananda’s Life)Books by Vasant Lad

I've heard and been a part of a LOT of birth stories but I have never heard a birth story quite like this one. Vincia's second birth was the epitome of precipitous labor. Baby number one arrived two days past his due date after 36 hours of labor - eight hours medicated with Pitocin and an epidural. For the second time around she was dreaming of fifteen hours of labor or less. She never could've imagined that it was going to be less than three hours from her first contraction to her baby being born. They had planned for a hospital birth. Their bags were packed, childcare was secured, and the car was warm. But her daughter had different plans. Thankfully, all of their childbirth education (including my podcast and childbirth education course) prepared Vincia and her husband to handle the unexpected home birth. I couldn't wait to hear her story, and you're going to love it!In this Episode, You'll Learn About:How Vincia could tell she was pregnantWhy physicians need to do a better job of addressing weight during pregnancyWhat made getting a doula so important to Vincia and her familyWhy she tried to stay home longer for her second laborWhat her husband did to assist her during contractionsHow long it took her to progress to active laborHow her husband and in-laws worked as her delivery team--Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode231Check out The Birth Preparation CourseRegister for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right WayOur Sponsors:* Check out ByHeart and use my code DRNICOLE for 10% off your first order! - https://byheart.com/podcast* Check out Mabbly : https://lactationnetwork.com/* Check out Warner Bros: https://www.warnerbros.com/movies/the-color-purpleAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
