In this episode of The Remnant Radio, hosts Joshua Lewis and Michael Rowntree welcome back Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, associate professor at Biola University's Talbot School of Theology, to unpack her latest book, Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters. Born from reflections during COVID-19, this discussion dives into the biblical roots of the church, starting with Abraham and tracing the concept of the “ekklesia”—the gathered assembly of God's people—through both the Old and New Testaments.Whether you're wrestling with past church hurts, seeking deeper biblical prophecy insights, or simply wanting to strengthen your understanding of Christian community, this episode reaffirms the church as a family waiting together for Christ's return — messy, but ultimately transformative. 0:00 – Introduction5:27 – Ekklesia: Gathered Community7:50 – Church Vocation: Waiting Together for God12:26 – Biblical Narrative: Worship, Wait, Work, Word15:03 – Church Continuity from Abraham18:20 – Deuteronomy: Community Care and Tithe21:30 – Practical Applications to Modern Church27:48 – New Testament Use of Old Testament Laws32:14 – Prophets Rebuking Disorder and False Prophecy38:49 – Addressing Abuses: Accountability and Leaving47:15 – Navigating Political Divisions and Unity55:38 – God's Use of Broken People in Church59:03 – Closing: Power of Gathering as Family
In this episode, Carmen Imes joins me to explore her new book Becoming God's Family: Why Church Still Matters. We look at why the church, despite its failures, divisions, and imperfections, remains central to the way of Jesus. Carmen traces the story of God's people from Abraham and Sinai to the early church, revealing how God has always chosen to work through community. She offers a compelling vision of what it means to belong to one another, to wait together on God, and to become a family formed by grace. This conversation is a reminder that church isn't a perfect institution, it's a gathering of people who need God and one another. In a world of disconnection and individualism, this is an invitation to rediscover the beauty of life together.Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California. She is the author of Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters, Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters, and Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters. Her primary areas of expertise are Exodus and the Psalms. Carmen has a YouTube channel where she releases weekly Torah Tuesday videos and you can find her writing on various websites, including Christianity Today, Substack, The Well, and The Politics of Scripture blog. Carmen has appeared on over 150 podcasts and radio outlets. She enjoys traveling to speak at churches, schools, conferences, and retreats. Carmen is passionate about equipping the church to engage the Old Testament well and to see its relevance for the Christian life.Carmen's Book:Becoming God's FamilyCarmen's Recommendations:All Creatures Great and SmallSingle Ever AfterConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. “The church is a multiethnic and multicultural assembly of believers spanning history that God has called into fellowship with Christ and with one another. We gather regularly to consider the teachings of the Bible and to orient our lives around God's coming kingdom. Together we wait for God to make all things new, and we bear witness to the world of what God has already done.” - Becoming God's FamilyWhat is the purpose of the church? If you talked with different people you'd likely get different answers. You might hear that it's a place to worship God. You might hear that it's just a place people go to feel better about their lives. There's a broader conversation happening about whether or not the church still matters. Even amongst Christians, there's a question over why they need to go to church when they can just believe in Jesus and read the Bible on their own. Today's episode is all about the church and the importance of with-ness. My guest today is Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University and author of the new book Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters. In this conversation we talk about her trilogy of books about our relationship with and to God (of which this is the third), we talk about why there's even a question around whether the church matters or not, we talk about the role and function of the church, and the truth of how church gatherings are really oriented around what we cannot do on our own. In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer engages with Dr. Carmen Imes about her book 'Becoming God's Family: Why the Church Still Matters.' They explore the themes of identity, vocation, and belonging within the context of the church, discussing the significance of ecclesia and its roots in the Old Testament. The conversation emphasizes the continuity of God's people from the Old Testament to the New Testament, the importance of community in faith, and the call for believers to actively participate in the church despite its imperfections. Dr. Imes invites listeners to recognize their role in the church and the blessings that come from being part of a community of faith. Ryan Soave, LMHC, a renowned addiction treatment specialist with decades of clinical experience and his own recovery story, sits down to share the conversations that typically happen behind closed doors in treatment centers. As someone working on the front lines helping people with addictions and their families daily, Ryan brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to help families move from reactive crisis mode to intentional healing- for everyone involved. Highlights The 94.7% Reality - Understanding why most people with addiction don't perceive they need help, and how this statistic actually explains the resistance you're experiencing (it's not about you or your efforts) Motivational Interviewing for Families - How treatment professionals help people build internal motivation for change, and what families can learn about meeting their loved one where they are, not where they wish they were The Substance as Solution Perspective - Why viewing the addiction as your loved one's attempt at solving discomfort (rather than just destructive behavior) can transform your approach and reduce your frustration The Family System Impact - How addiction creates functioning patterns where everyone plays a role, and why understanding your part isn't about blame but about empowerment to create change When the "Patient" Gets Healthier Than the Family - Why families often struggle more when their loved one enters treatment, and how to prepare for and navigate this challenging but hopeful phase The Serenity Prayer in Practice - Concrete ways to identify what you can and cannot control, including how your reactions contribute to the family system's functioning Age and Responsibility Considerations - Different approaches for families dealing with a 14-year-old versus a 35-year-old, while maintaining consistent principles about boundaries and support The "Built-in Forgetter" Phenomenon - Understanding why your loved one returns to using even after experiencing severe consequences, and why this baffles everyone (including them) Treatment Fatigue Reality - Why people often stop participating in treatment when they start feeling better, and how families can support sustained engagement without becoming codependent Modern Challenges for Recovery - The unprecedented availability and potency of substances today, including the fentanyl crisis and how social media impacts both addiction and recovery Individual Goals Within Family Systems - How family members can identify personal goals that have nothing to do with their loved one's addiction, and why this benefits everyone The Spiritual Component of Healing - How recovery involves returning to an authentic self rather than finding something new, and what this means for family healing Meeting People Where They Are - Practical ways to support your loved one's actual goals rather than imposing your own, while still maintaining healthy boundaries Codependency as Addiction - Understanding how families can become "addicted" to their loved one's wellbeing, and healthy ways to redirect that energy toward personal growth The Lucky Ones Perspective - Why families dealing with addiction, despite the pain, often have opportunities for profound growth and connection that others may never experience This conversation offers something rare: honest, practical wisdom from someone who helps families navigate these waters every day. Ryan's shares that while addiction affects the whole family system, everyone has the capacity for healing and growth. You're situation isn't hopeless, even when it feels that way. Ever feel like “life” is just too much to keep homeschooling going? This one's for you.I sat down with Karissa Martin, a mom of four, seasoned homeschooler, and expert juggler who, this year alone, faced one family crisis after another: illness, caretaking, and more than a few emotional curveballs. But you know what? Not only did her family make it through, but they actually experienced more growth than they have in years. We talk about the sandwich generation (yes, it even counts with grandparents), trying to keep homeschool afloat while at the hospital, late-night co-op assignments, and what it really looks like to let your vision and community hold you up when you can't do it on your own.Karissa pulls back the curtain on how she hit burnout, learned to finally ask for help, and found a “village” when she needed it most. She also reveals how, even with all the chaos, her kids' education didn't just survive…it thrived. We don't sugarcoat the messy parts, but you'll come away with real encouragement, practical ideas for finding your footing in a tough season, and a hefty dose of hope. What you'll learn:How Karissa homeschooled during crisis and family caretaking (without losing her mind)The do-the-next-thing approach to planning that kept her from feeling behindWhy she now plans her whole homeschool year—spoiler: this saved her baconHow asking for help (even when it's hard) changes everythingLife lessons her kids learned from supporting extended familyWhy “behind” is almost always in your headThe reality of burnout—and Karissa's steps for climbing outThe surprising ways community can show up, even when you think you don't have a villageResources Mentioned:Put Your Homeschool Year on AutopilotHSBT Podcast Free CommunityWant more help with planning your year, surviving the messy seasons, and connecting with a community that actually gets it? What compels an American combat veteran to risk everything and smuggle suitcases of wine and vodka out of a war zone?In this eye-opening episode of Thrive Loud with Lou Diamond, Lou sits down with Sam Lerman, founder of Spirit Worldwide—a venture that's bringing the finest Ukrainian wine and vodka to the United States while fueling life-saving humanitarian efforts back in Ukraine. Sam's journey began not as a business strategy, but as a deployment: a seasoned military and defense industry expert, Sam entered Ukraine at the height of the Russian invasion to help equip and train the Ukrainian armed forces. But what started as a few weeks in a war-torn safe house soon turned into a life-changing mission, blending Sam's love of Ukraine's people, culture—and surprisingly world-class spirits—with a new entrepreneurial purpose.Key highlights from this episode:Sam's powerful origin story: from U.S. Army service to front-line procurement and advisory roles during the Ukraine invasionThe clandestine (and sometimes comedic) adventures of smuggling Ukrainian wine and vodka for friends and familyWhy few Americans have ever tasted high-end Ukrainian spirits—and how Soviet history and geopolitics played a roleThe birth of Spirit Worldwide and its unique business model: every bottle supports landmine removal and humanitarian work in Ukraine, with 15% of profits pledged to life-saving initiativesUkraine's global wine history, cultural flavor, and the astonishing international success of their vodkas (including double gold awards at U.S. competitions)The real energy, resilience, and daily life inside Ukraine from someone who's lived through the war up closeEntrepreneurial lessons: navigating the U.S. alcohol industry from scratch, managing regulatory chaos, and building a brand that creates both impact and awarenessThis episode is not just about spirits—it's about true spirit in the face of adversity, and how a love for culture and people can fuel world-changing business. In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Amidst these detailed portrayals of the Exodus women, Dr. Imes also points out the narrator's use of humor to depict the bumbling and nameless Pharaoh. 00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters 00:02 Exploring the Role of Zipporah in Exodus 01:04 Meet Dr. Carmen Joy IMEs 02:06 The Mystery of Exodus 4:24-25 03:26 Theological and Structural Significance of Zipporah 14:33 The Role of Women in the Early Chapters of Exodus 21:49 Elevating Women in Scripture 22:00 A Word from CBE 22:37 The Women of Exodus: Zipporah, Pua, and Shiphrah 22:52 The Story of Moses' Birth and the Women Who Saved Him 32:07 Moses' Identity and His Encounter with God 39:37 Closing Thoughts and Resources 41:20 Final Remarks and How to Stay Connected Guest Bio Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California. Episode Summary:In this raw and reflective episode of Unwritten Chapters, I open up about the complicated trauma that comes not from the battlefield, but from the living room. From family. From silence. As a veteran, former paramedic, and survivor of PTSD, I share a personal account of emotional abuse, gaslighting, and betrayal—specifically the kind that occurs within family systems. About setting boundaries for your mental health and your recovery.Whether you're in addiction recovery, navigating complex PTSD, or struggling with toxic family relationships, this episode offers solidarity and insight. If you've ever felt unseen, unheard, or unworthy in the eyes of the people you should've been able to trust, this one's for you.

I haven't done a solocast in a while, but when you talk, I listen, and this topic has been requested by many of you, so I decided to dedicate this episode to talk about navigating big life transitions with differently wired kids. Our family has gone through our fair share of big changes, which you'll hear all about in this episode, so this is something that I've spent a lot of time thinking about. Especially as a parent of a differently wired kid, I know that there are some extra challenges that might come up when their routines, environment, life circumstances, or supports change, and our kids are also more likely to be resistant to changes (even if they are beneficial). So today I'll be sharing the strategies I've personally found helpful while going through big transitions with Asher. In this episode, I talk about key things such as why being honest when communicating with your kid is so important to help them understand and process change, how being vulnerable can be a way to show support, how to validate our kids' feelings about the changes or transitions, and how to identify their concerns so you can make plans to address them in advance. I also share about what adjustment disorder is and the kind of extra support you might need during transitions.
