Send us a textSociologist Jennie Germann Molz joins the podcast to discuss her book The World Is Our Classroom: Extreme Parenting and the Rise of Worldschooling. Jennie is a professor at the College of the Holy Cross whose research explores mobility, technology, and alternative forms of family life. Drawing on both academic insight and her own experience traveling the world with her ten-year-old son, she examines what happens when families move beyond traditional education models and choose to learn through travel. We talk about how worldschooling challenges conventional ideas of parenting, risk, and education. The term itself includes a wide range of practices, from part-time educational travel to fully nomadic living. What connects them is a shared belief that learning happens outside institutional classrooms. Jennie also describes how both worldschooling and more conventional approaches like helicopter parenting can respond to the same concerns about preparing children for the future. The conversation looks at worldschooling through the lens of a sociologist, covering how travel shapes emotional adaptability in children, how standardized testing limits our understanding of learning, and how digital tools and post-COVID shifts have expanded possibilities for mobile education. For listeners interested in alternative education, digital nomad families, or learning outside school systems, this episode offers a grounded academic view of the worldschooling movement.
Send us a textAfter her eight-year-old son was expelled from school in the UK, Corianda Shepherd and her partner Joel left behind a life that no longer worked. They moved to rural Spain, bought the first house they saw, and slowly built Shepherd's Rest—a worldschooling community where families live together, learn in nature, and reject the idea that difference needs to be managed or corrected. This episode is not just about homeschooling. It's about what happens when the social structure becomes too rigid, when families are stretched thin, and when children who don't fit are sidelined. We talk about creating a different rhythm, not as an escape, but as a deliberate response to a system that has forgotten its purpose.Corianda shares how her sons began to thrive in a quieter environment, how a diagnosis doesn't have to define a life, and why she believes family—not institutions—should be the foundation for raising children. Together, we reflect on how the box society offers has become too small, and what it takes to build something more human outside it.
In a rapidly changing world, how do we best prepare our children for the future? Press play on the latest episode of the Transform with Travel podcast where Kelly interviews Rekha Magon, co-founder and Chief Education Officer of Boundless Life. Rekha's insights challenge the status quo of traditional education, advocating for a model that's dynamic, adaptive, and in tune with the needs of our global society. Many parents are reconsidering the traditional methods of schooling, where education often feels like a factory model—with rigid schedules and standardized tests that reward compliance over creativity. Rekha shares how Boundless Life integrates multi-age classrooms, enabling students to learn alongside peers who are both older and younger, fostering leadership, empathy, and more natural learning relationships. In the episode, we discuss the importance of adapting education to be more personalized, hands-on, and globally focused. Through experiences like cultural immersion at Boundless Life locations, children learn not just academics but also empathy, cultural awareness, and global-mindedness as they interact with local communities and tackle real-world problems. For parents eager to implement global learning without boarding an international flight, Rekha offers practical tips. Invite the world into your home by cooking meals from different countries, participating in cultural festivals, or simply engaging with families from different backgrounds in your community. As Boundless Life expands, Rekha envisions a world with more immersive education centers, making global learning accessible to even more families. Current destinations include Portugal, Tuscany, Greece, Bali, and Montenegro, with the newest location in Uruguay, offering rich cultural experiences in breathtaking settings. In this episode:0:00 Intro 02:56 Meet the Co-Founder of Boundless Life04:58 The Vision Behind Boundless Life11:50 Ad - Mindful Traveler14:04 Challenges of Traditional Education22:17 The Importance of Global Citizenship25:47 Place-Based Learning in Action28:34 Transformational Stories from Boundless Life31:58 Cultural Immersion in Italy and Israel33:33 Managing Family Transitions Between Cohorts34:36 Personalized Education and 360 Profiles36:11 Experiencing Nepi in Bali39:32 Integrating Global Learning at Home45:57 Boundless Life's Vision for Education47:19 New Destinations and Future Plans49:59 Getting Started with Boundless Life55:22 Rapid Fire Questions and Closing ThoughtsReady to join Boundless Life? There are approximately 35 million digital nomads - workers who work online from various places around a country or around the world - and the number is poised to grow rapidly. As tools that enable remote work improve and travel infrastructure grows, the idea of taking a family with children still in school on a digital nomad journey is becoming much more appealing to many parents.Annika Paradise is one of the co-authors of the book “Wonder Year” - a guide to long-term family travel and worldschooling - in which she chronicles the twelve-month around the world adventure she, her husband, and their three young children took. In this conversation, Annika discusses the challenges faced and benefits gained from her family's wonder year. She dispels the myth that this is something only the wealthy can do and she goes on to talk about what she learned about herself, what their children learned about her and her husband, and she provides advice for anyone who wants to do something as audacious as packing up their lives and living them on the road for a year or longer. Annika makes the case for why their wonder year was the best learning her children have ever had, the best learning she has ever had, and why taking a wonder year will become a growing trend.Annika Paradise and her husband, Will, worldschooled their three children across three continents and twelve countries including Nepal, Laos, China, Cambodia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Italy and Greece. With a cello. Annika is co-author of the book “Wonder Year” and is an adjunct instructor of English at Front Range Community College in Longmont, Colorado.

He is the host of the Radical Personal Finance podcast and, as you'll hear in this episode, is also passionate about education and worldschooling with his five children. In the second installment of our three-part series, where we discuss everything but finance, Joshua and I delve further into the subject of education and how worldschooling his own five children has altered his ideas about what makes a “well-educated man.” Enjoy! TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH JOSHUA SHEATS Find out what two key skills Joshua has added to the “Three Rs” that every person needs to grasp to succeed in today's world. Hear why Joshua believes it's fallacious that just because information is available at our fingertips, we shouldn't still be teaching content to our children. Learn what change in approach led to the absolute destruction of the French educational system's outcomes. Uncover the secret of how I am able to process information from audiobooks at 3x speed. People don't believe me, but it's true! Hear Joshua expertly break down the three contexts of education that people grapple with. Find out what surprised me about Joshua's evolving thoughts about textbooks, which I absolutely loathe. Learn why Joshua and I both see the tremendous value in learning certain subjects through stories rather than through more standard academic approaches. Discover what attributes Joshua believes are embodied by a “well-educated man.” Listen in to learn about the caveats Joshua and I both add to our own “unschooling” philosophies. By the end of this episode, you will have a brand new perspective on the subject of learning, whether you are a homeschooling parent or just a well-educated adult yourself.
