Welcome to the Red Hand Podcast It's been another tough week to be an Ulster fan as our Challenge Cup hopes were crushed by Clermont. Richie Murphy's men were demolished in the second half after a pretty decent first half showing leaving fans and players feeling a bit shell shocked. Richie's still at the wheel though and he needs time. He's been parachuted in to a difficult situation and our new head coach and his squad need the backing of supporters. Depending on who you listen to in the Ulster camp we were either wrong to have such high expectations of the lads or we're actually not to far away from clicking and we just need to fix a few things. Maybe we should just enjoy the last few games without hope or expectation and see how we get on? I've maybe lost all ambition for this season, but I am genuinely optimistic about the changes Ulster have made. The equity markets ended the day in the positive territory for a third session after facing bouts of volatility during the day. After oscillating 408 points, the BSE Sensex index ended at 60,617 level, up 221 points or 0.37 per cent. Its counterpart, the Nifty50 shut shop at 18,056 levels, higher by 52.45 points or 0.29 per cent. Private mortgage lender HDFC was the top contributor towards the Sensex's total gains, followed by RIL, HCL Technology, TCS, Infosys and Tech Mahindra. All these counters were up between 1 per cent and 4.4 per cent. On the downside, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, Kotak Bank, ITC, and Dr Reddy's were the top laggards. The broader markets were quiet today with the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices ending little changed. AU Small Finance Bank, Trent, Gujarat Gas, Emami Paper Mills, and Texmaco Rail were the top gainers from the space. Gabriel India, Omaxe, Poonawalla Fincorp, and Vodafone Idea, meanwhile, were the biggest losers. Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index was the biggest loser of the day, and ended nearly 2% lower after brokerage Jefferies expressed lower optimism on the sector as weak macro and demand concerns in China are seen weighing on metal prices. The brokerage downgraded its ratings on Tata Steel from 'Buy' to 'Hold' and JSW Steel from 'Buy' to 'Underperform'. The two stocks closed 3% lower.  Auto, FMCG, Pharma, consumer durables and telecom, too, broadly ended on a muted note. On the contrary, the Nifty IT index was the top gainer, which ended 1% higher, followed by realty and energy sector stocks. IT majors TCS, Infosys and Wipro are set to announce their Q3 results tomorrow after market hours.  Among individual stocks, debt-ridden telecom player Vodafone Idea was in the limelight today as the stock crashed over 22% after the company said it has opted to convert interest on deferred spectrum and AGR dues into equity. With this, the government will now become the largest shareholder of the company with a 35.6% stake. Today's slide has led the stock to correct 31.5% from its 52-week high level touched on December 10, 2021. Among those listed recently, shares of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar, hit a new low after it fell nearly 5% on the BSE. In the past one month, the share price has dipped 25% following the expiry of the mandatory lock-in period for anchor investors on December 13, 2021.  On the flip side, the shares of JBM Auto were locked at the 5% upper circuit and hit a new high on the BSE after the company announced the acquisition of 51% stake in group companies JBM Green Energy Systems and JBM EV Industries. In the past two months, the stock of the automotive company has zoomed 123%.  Overall, 1,941 stocks advanced on the BSE while 1,505 declined and 67 ended flat. Among these, 615 stocks hit their respective upper circuits, while just 7 of these hit lower circuits.

Defying weak global cues and surging coronavirus cases domestically, equity markets soared on Monday with the Nifty50 index reclaiming its crucial 18,000-mark by closing.    The 50-pack index hit an intra-day high of 18,017, before settling 1% higher at 18,003. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex ended at 60,396, up by 651 points or 1.09%.  UPL, Hero MotoCorp, Titan, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, SBI, and L&T were the top gainers on the Nifty, while Wipro, Divis Labs, Nestle India, Tata Consumer Products, Asian Paints, and Power Grid remained the top drags. In the broader markets, the BSE MidCap index added 0.7%, while the BSE SmallCap index gained 1.2% "Surging Covid cases are being ignored by markets globally since lockdowns and restrictions on economic activity are not expected. The domestic equity market expects the Q3 results starting this week to be very good, particularly for IT and financials and it is discounting good results in advance", said Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. Among sectors, the Nifty PSU Bank index was the leading outperformer with a 3.3% rally on the NSE. Among individual shares, Bank of Baroda, PNB, and Canara Bank rose up to 5% amid media reports that the government may consider increasing FDI limits in the sector during Budget 2022. Nifty Auto and Realty indices, too, put up a strong show with both closing 1.9% higher. From the latter, Sunteck Realty ended over 13% up after the company reported a 29% sequential jump in pre-sales at Rs 352 crores for the December quarter. Oberoi Realty, too, surged over 3% on robust bookings for the said quarter.  Now coming to some of the other top developments of the day -- Share price of Paytm parent One97 Communications fell over 6% and hit a new low on the BSE after global brokerage Macquarie reduced its target price on the stock to Rs 900. With today's slide, the share of the company has fallen 45% against its issue price of Rs 2,150 per share. Meanwhile, economists, including those at Citigroup Inc, India Ratings & Research, and ICICI Bank have lowered their GDP estimates after official data Friday showed that India's GDP will likely expand by 9.2% in the current fiscal -- slower than the 9.5% previously projected by the RBI.  Lastly, according to a research note by Goldman Sachs, the US Federal Reserve will likely raise interest rates four times this year and will start its balance sheet runoff process in July.

Domestic indices on Friday started on a highly positive note, but failed to hold their opening gains and ended marginally higher amid consolidatory mood and mixed global cues. After starting gap-up, the BSE Sensex index inched over 500 points to hit an intra-day high of 60,130. However, selling in select heavyweights like Bajaj twins, M&M, HDFC, Bharti Airtel, and L&T in the second half of the session erased gains. The index eventually ended 143 points higher at 59,745. Its NSE counterpart, Nifty50, meanwhile, closed at 17,813, up 67 points.  The broader markets, however, outperformed the benchmarks for a second straight day with the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices ending around 0.5 per cent higher each. . Sectorally, the Nifty Auto and Pharma indices were among the major losers, down up to 0.4 per cent. The BSE Telecom index was also an underperformer for the second day, down 0.5 per cent.  On the contrary, the Nifty Oil & Gas index was the top gainer, which ended 1.3 per cent higher, followed by FMCG and Bank indices, which closed 0.6 per cent up each. Among individual stocks, Tata Group company Tata Teleservices entered the list of top-100 most valued companies in the country with its market capitalization crossing the Rs 50,000 crore-mark for the first time since listing. The stock was locked in the 5% upper circuit and hit a new record high. It has rallied a whopping 567%  in the last three months. On the flip side, shares of Hinduja Global Solutions were locked in the 20% lower circuit on the BSE on profit booking after the company's announcement of a bonus share issue in 1:1 ratio, and an interim dividend of Rs 150 a share failed to cheer investors.  Meanwhile, on the economic front, HSBC Holdings Plc sees new restrictions in India due to rising Covid-19 cases possibly lowering the country's GDP growth by about 25 basis points in the current financial year. Further, HSBC economist Pranjul Bhandari said that the rapid rise in covid cases could also defer RBI rate hikes for a while, but eventually the central bank would need to act due to rising price pressures.  Lastly, the world's biggest cryptocurrency Bitcoin tumbled below $42,000 to its lowest level since September amid hawkish sentiments after the US Fed's December meeting minutes were released. The cryptocurrency declined as much as 4.9% to $41,008, a fall of about 40% from its record near $69,000 level reached on November 10.
