The Veiqia Project is a creative research project inspired by the practice of Fijian female tattooing of veiqia. In 2015 a group of Fijian women based in New Zealand and Australia were brought together to create new works for an exhibition inspired by veiqia (Fijian female tattoo), a practice that was stopped from around the mid-19th century and conducted in secrecy up to the early 20th century. The project involved an online research forum and time spent with Fijian collections in Fiji and New Zealand museums. The exhibition took place at ST PAUL St Gallery in March 2016 for the Auckland Arts Festival and coincided with the PAA XII International Symposium. Four years after their creation - on the 27th April 2019, The Veiqia Project held an event on Dhawaral country at Campbelltown Arts Centre called 'Solevu' - a full day of delicious lovo-making (Fijian earth oven), workshops and talanoa to celebrate the last 18 months of cross-generational Era Yalovata Na Marama program. And due to this event, which Cribbs came across and invited Talica....The 2 Brownish Girls podcast was born. The production is described as ‘A communal voice of the Pacific Islands communities of Australia, showcasing theatre, dance, music and other creative arts - all streamed through the eyes of Pasifika-Western Sydney. The production will encompass all the beautiful things about our communities, whilst still having the ability to hold a mirror up to ourselves and the wider Australian communities and our calls for change.' As we always say, we love interviewing Pasifika from all walks of life and it's very important to us to provide a broad representation of our community. Western World media has always put limitations on our community with stereotypes on what we can achieve. That's why it's incredibly important for us on this podcast to interview our community and give space to everyone's lived experiences and hopefully encourage the younger generations of Pasifika to achieve their goals. We also wanted to take the moment to mention this discussion will be from the cis-hetero perspective as Pasifika women and that we acknowledge Samoa's third and fourth gender, fa'afafine and fa'afatama who both have integral roles in a Samoan household from pre-colonisation, up until this day. Although we’re Pasifika, we were raised in non-traditional households. One of the most taboo subjects in the Pasifika community (worldwide) is openly talking about sexual health. With the rise of artists such as Onefour & Hooligan Hefs describing their struggles growing up in poverty in Western Sydney as Pasifika- Australians, there is still an amount of Pasifika who have grown up in middle class/upper class households. Why don’t Pasifika discuss their middle class privilege? Do they know their privilege? Are they aware of their privilege? Why do we project the ‘Struggle Street’ narrative on all Pasifika in Australia? It is easy for us to discuss the privilege we don’t have but are other Pasifika. Cribbs and Talica discuss this big topic that touches on classism and the community.
