The Veiqia Project is a creative research project inspired by the practice of Fijian female tattooing of veiqia. In 2015 a group of Fijian women based in New Zealand and Australia were brought together to create new works for an exhibition inspired by veiqia (Fijian female tattoo), a practice that was stopped from around the mid-19th century and conducted in secrecy up to the early 20th century. The project involved an online research forum and time spent with Fijian collections in Fiji and New Zealand museums. The exhibition took place at ST PAUL St Gallery in March 2016 for the Auckland Arts Festival and coincided with the PAA XII International Symposium. Four years after their creation - on the 27th April 2019, The Veiqia Project held an event on Dhawaral country at Campbelltown Arts Centre called 'Solevu' - a full day of delicious lovo-making (Fijian earth oven), workshops and talanoa to celebrate the last 18 months of cross-generational Era Yalovata Na Marama program. And due to this event, which Cribbs came across and invited Talica....The 2 Brownish Girls podcast was born. Join Cribbs & Talica and members of The Veiqia Project, Donita, Luisa and Margaret for great interview.
This conversation with Donita Sparks of L7 starts with a look back at the Alternative Nation Festival in 1995 and the band's connection with Australian audiences. We'll revisit the early reception of Nirvana's Nevermind and get Donita's perspective on The Prodigy's cover of the L7 cut, "Fuel My Fire." We clear up if Jennifer Finch ever played with Moby's band and whether Oliver Stone personally reached out for the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack contribution. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the notorious 'Tampongate' at the Reading Festival, we'll discuss its place in the band's history. The interview will also cover the band's advocacy efforts through Rock for Choice and whether Donita still identifies with the feminist movement, followed by her views on current issues regarding transgender individuals in sports, prisons, and beauty pageants.

Interview by Erin EddyYou can't make a list of influential bands of 90s grunge without including L7.Formed in the late 80s, L7 were a crucial cog in the machine that was the grunge movement, pushing hair and glam metal aside to create a new branch on the tree of alternative music. The fact that they were an all-female band was only one of the things that made L7 stand out and be noticed. The energy and feistiness of their live shows was another. Their outspoken and unapologetic punk rock attitude, laced with sarcastic humour and wit, also caught people's attention. And of course, some of their memorable incidents on stage will be cemented in rock and roll history forever.Probably the most notable of the L7 stunts was a tampon-throwing incident at Reading Festival in 1992.“I needed to make lemonade out of lemons,” frontwoman Donita explains, of the time she retaliated to being pelted with mud by punters during L7's set. “That involved a live ammo tampon straight out of my body. That's what I did.”HEAVY was conscious of the fact that this incident, which happened 30-odd years ago now, may be one Donita is sick of discussing, but in fact, it was quite the opposite. The musician conveyed the story freely with a laugh and said, “Those incidents remain pretty funny and shocking and rad, and people check us out because of that stuff.”L7's relationship with the music industry was relatively turbulent, and labels lost interest with them when grunge ran its course. But L7 left a mark, and a devoted fan base was well and truly established, seeing the band remaining relevant throughout the years and continuing to produce music.Bricks Are Heavy was L7's third album, and the one that exposed them to audiences outside the US.Heading to Australia and New Zealand this December, L7 will be performing this landmark album front to back, as well as diving into their catalogue of other fan favourites.“Aussie fans really love rock and roll, they're really into good rock,” Donita states enthusiastically, “That (is what) we're looking forward to.”To gauge what to expect when L7 return to Australia, listen to the interview in its en

This week's guest on the podcast is Donita Sparks, a very talented musician, songwriter, and close friend of Lydia. She is the co-founder and lead vocalist of the legendary all-female rock band L7. With her unmistakable voice and fierce guitar skills, Donita has been a driving force in the rock scene for decades. Her dedication to social and environmental issues shines through in L7's upcoming single and video, Cooler than Mars, scheduled for release on September 12th. The song passionately urges humanity to prioritize the present and focus on urgent matters rather than becoming fixated solely on the allure of future life on Mars and space exploration. Beyond her work with L7, Donita collaborates with Lydia and other musicians in contributing to the Marianne Faithfull charity record. L7's momentum remains strong, with an extensive tour across the United States in September, followed by shows in South America throughout October and November, concluding in Australia in December. With shows selling out rapidly across all markets, Donita and L7 continue to leave an indelible mark on the music industry and beyond.
Yesterday would've been by dad's 87th birthday. I'm sure he and my mom had a great time celebrating in glory, that is, if we still celebrate birthdays in heaven. I marked the occasion with my husband and my dear friend, Donita, whose husband went to be with Jesus about a month before my dad left earth for heaven. When my friend popped over a little sooner than I expected, I told her I was writing my podcast for today and asked if she could suggest some verses for me to share with you. Without hesitation she said her favorite passage comes from 1 John 4:13-16. Thank you, Donita, for the inspiration. I pulled our declaration from 1 John 4:16, which is true of anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is God's son. God's love never ends, never fails, never gives up. Ever. If you've experienced God's love, then you know that the love of God is a love like no other. His love is a love you can trust in and depend on. You and I can't begin to grasp the depth of God's love because it is beyond our human capacity to measure. It's also beyond our human capacity to offer. Oh, how I wish I could love like God loves: unconditionally, continually, and deeply. But even when I fail to love like He does, He never fails at loving me. There is so much security in being loved the way God loves us. Love like the love God has for us is described in scripture as being a love that is patient and kind. A love that is never envious or boastful. It's a love that does not dishonor others or come across as self-seeking. it is not easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs. The love that God has for us and desires for us to spread around is a love that always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. The love of God never ever fails. I'm excited to be teaching Women's Bible study this fall, and I've posted the details as well as a registration form on my website. Please take a minute to check it out by visiting shawnamariebryant.com. The Bible study is based on my book, Longing to Belong, and it will teach you how to make a habit of reading the Bible not just for information, but also for conversation. We will take time each week to make declarations of truth. After all, your tongue has power. Use it for good. This week's scripture: 1 John 4:13-16

In this episode of the Knowledge Cast, EK CEO Zach Wahl speaks with Donita Volkwijn, Manager of Knowledge Management at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Donita joined Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in May 2012, and leads Knowledge Management transformation efforts, with the aim of leveraging knowledge management tools and methodologies to ensure that access and information (and, as a result, power) are distributed fairly and equitably across organizations to drive engagement and performance. Based in New York, she helps internal and external clients develop and implement effective strategies to achieve their philanthropic goals. A board member at the Loveland Foundation, Donita is currently designing a strategy that explores the relationship between Knowledge Management (KM) and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), having found that centering the three pillars of KM (people, process, and technology) can serve as an excellent entry point to DEI, while a thoughtful DEI policy can lead to better KM practices.
