"That's no ordinary look. That's the kind of look a man gives when he is afraid somebody might be watching him." In our final recruiter spotlight episode of Atlas: Now Streaming, we interview Kristen Begeman. Kristen is based in South Dakota and the two of us met for the first time when we were roommates at TravCon in 2018! (*insert Vine "and they were roommates" reference here*) She's a mom of three, loves old movies, and watching documentaries - that is, when she isn't watching something her kids picked out! Kristen and I talk about some of her favorite movies including 1954's "Rear Window," our mutual love of "Something's Gotta Give," our favorite book-to-movie adaptations, and our latest quarantine binge. Learn more about Kristen: https://tinyurl.com/s8b7ov9
She received second place in our first taco eating contest, she drank cocktails during the day before Covid and got paid for it, and she won Best Costume as Braden Boex in last year's Halloween costume contest. Who else are we talking about? It's none other than Natasha Sage! Natasha has been with Atlas for two years and has been killing it as a recruiter ever since. We love her work ethic, her relationship with her nurses, and her sweet personality. In today's episode of Atlas: Now Streaming, we talk about our favorite binge-watching snacks, one of the most iconic DCOM movies ever (spoiler alert: it's Wish Upon a Star starring a young Katherine Heigel), and the joys of reality television. It's officially Fall, October has begun, and pumpkin spice is everywhere! But whatever you do, don't bring any pumpkin spice near Jody Pokorny. Pumpkin pies, lattes, cereal, you name it; Jody does NOT vibe with pumpkins! So, what does Jody like? The Atlas mom behind the cute Bitmoji LinkedIn posts loves the ever-popular show Friends, softball, beer, and Quentin Tarantino movies! "Let's get down to business to defeat the Rourans!" Err, I mean, the Huns? It's the Huns, right? In the newest live-action remake from Disney, Mulan (2020) tells the story we all know and love with some significant twists and changes added in. There's no music, Mushu, or Huns to defeat. So, what's left? A badass woman saving her father from the war by disguising herself as a man and taking his place. That's still an awesome story to tell! Mulan was originally set to release in theaters back in March (you know, the before times) but was just released on Disney+ this month with a premier access fee. Gorgeously shot and fun for everyone, it's definitely worth the price. Haven't seen this one yet? Decide for yourself if it's just another Hollywood remake or an honorable retelling of a Disney classic.
Meet Mark Lau in today's recruiter spotlight episode of Atlas: Now Streaming! Mark has been with Atlas since March 2019 (you know, the before times) but was previously a coach, where he met fellow Atlas alum, Lindsey Martin! In this episode, we talk about his favorite movie Rudy, the return of movie theatres, and Mark's quarantine binge of all 21 Marvel films. That's commitment, people! Imagine how determined he'll be to help you find travel assignments! Get to know Mark: https://atlasmedstaff.com/atlas-team/mark-lau/
Have you ever had a memory that you swear was real, but was later proven false? For example, did you ever read "The Berenstain Bears" as a kid, but you know it was spelled "Berenstein"? Or what about Curious George, didn't he have a tail? What about the Monopoly Man? Didn't he have a monocle? What is reality anymore?! All of these are examples of what has become known as "The Mandela Effect," named after former South African President Nelson Mandela, who many believe died in the 1980s and not in 2013. This infamous conspiracy theory dates back to the early 2010s and has sent the internet into a rabbit hole of possibilities. Could it just be collective false memories, or are these coincidences a sign of something bigger in the universe? The 2019 film "The Mandela Effect", now available for streaming on Hulu, explores this theory with a game developer, his wife, and his deceased daughter that, because of these discrepancies, he believes is still alive. We watched this movie, blew our minds, and discussed the theory in-depth in this week's episode of Atlas: Now Streaming. We strongly urge you to research the theory before watching. But be forewarned, you will finish this movie even more confused than you were before.
Recruiter Spotlight featuring Peter Somers - Atlas: Now Streaming 79 by Atlas Medstaff
We know what you're thinking: can't Hollywood think of anything NEW anymore? Fortunately, this reboot was a hit for us, and we think you'll like it, too! Netflix's new original series "The Baby-Sitters Club," based on the novels of the same name by Ann M. Martin, tells the story of five girls who form a business to help the families in their neighborhood find quality babysitters and make some money along the way. As the story unravels, the girls become more than just a club; they become best friends as they deal with typical middle school problems like boys, parents, and puberty all while covering deeper cultural themes and storylines that are refreshing and real. A reboot, sure, but one with progressive values that we certainly appreciated! This throwback is one we don't think you will want to miss. A fun, nostalgic romp for the 80s and 90s babies, "The Baby-Sitters Club" is a treat that the whole family will enjoy!
Wedding photography, hopeless romantics, trashy television, and goofy comedies; what do all of these things have in common? They're just a few of Dezirae's favorite things! This week, we sit down with Dezirae Thrower, who was hired on as one of our Allied recruiters in January (fun fact: all of our recruiters are nurse AND Allied recruiters now!). When she's not watching Ozark or Shameless, Dezirae is being a photographer, spending time with her friends and family, and helping healthcare professionals get those travel placements! In this episode, we talk about some of Dezirae's favorite shows, the funniest moments in "Step Brothers," and why sometimes you have to push through that awful pilot season of a show to get to the good stuff (looking right at you, Parks & Recreation). Learn more about Dezirae on her bio page: https://tinyurl.com/wagduy8
It wasn't too long ago that the USA Gymnastics team was on top of the Olympic Games. One of the most disciplined and competitive sports in the world, elite gymnastics has been the birthplace of some of the United States' most decorated athletes such as Simone Biles, bringing home the gold time and again. But at what cost? Unveiling one of the greatest and most heartbreaking scandals in sports history, Netflix's "Athlete" follows The Indianapolis Star as they investigate dozens of claims of abuse against Olympic doctor Larry Nassar and the organization's culture of cruelty, cover-ups, and keeping victims silent. While a difficult subject matter to watch, this documentary proves to be poignant in the wake of the #MeToo movement and the international human trafficking crisis. Watch this one will make you angry, but we promise, there's a happy ending.
Get to know one of our newer recruiters, Morgan Felix, in this week's episode. Morgan is a military kid, a former business owner, and a big fan of the horror genre, to Jamie's delight and Nina's dismay. We talk about Morgan's favorite film of all time, "A Few Good Men," and discuss why we (well, some of us) love "Friends" so much. We also dive into the greatest crime drama ever created, and a personal favorite of ours: Breaking Bad. What if you had to live someone else's happiest day of their lives over and over again? This modern take on the "Groundhog Day" story of repetition is intertwined with a rom-com love story in Hulu's "Palm Springs," starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, and J.K Simmons. The movie focuses on two characters, Nyles (Samberg) and Sarah (Milioti), who get stuck in a time loop of Sarah's sister's wedding. A fun, seriously heartwarming and charming new rom-com, "Palm Springs" is definitely a re-watchable classic and an excellent leading romantic role for both Samberg and Milioti. Listen to what we have to say here: Have you seen this one? Let us know in the comments what you thought!
"So, here's your options: Door number one - you go to prison for a very long time. Door number two - we're going to get back the Declaration of Independence; you help us find it, and... you still go to prison for a very long time. But you'll feel better inside." "National Treasure" is one of Disney's best live action-adventure films starring Nicolas Cage in a role we're pretty sure was only half-acting - we don't deny that a treasure *is* out there, and Nic Cage is *definitely* down to look for it. Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates (yes, really), an amateur cryptologist and historian on the hunt for a rumored hidden treasure linking back to the creation of the United States. Fun for everyone and definitely a Disney cult classic, this film went on to spawn a sequel and later a (confirmed!) third film and streaming series on Disney+. On this special 4th of July episode, Nina and Jamie review this family-friendly patriotic film. We talk about the US capital, our favorite spots to visit, and remind everyone to PLEASE be safe, so our ER nurses don't see you later tonight...
Where were you during the Waco siege of 1993? Nina and I...we were barely old enough to turn on a television. Paramount Network's 6-part miniseries is a dramatization of the 51-day standoff between the FBI, ATF, and the Branch Davidians led by "messiah" David Koresh in Waco, Texas. Based on two separate novels written from the perspectives of a survivor of the cult and the former head of the FBI's Criminal Negotiation Unit, this retelling of the American tragedy was sobering, informative, and ultimately, incredibly heartbreaking. While it received mixed reviews in its initial release in early 2018, our review was a bit more positive, as we educated ourselves on one of the biggest news stories of the early 1990s. "Waco" is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues!
"The King of Staten Island" is the latest Judd Apatow film, debuting last week from Universal and available for streaming now. Designed as a Pete Davidson vehicle, this film borrows several real-life parallels from Davidson's own life. The main character's father was a fireman who died on the job (Davidson's father was a fireman who died during 9/11), he struggles with depression and finding himself, and he's not sure what he wants to do with his life. Critical reviews so far have been generally favorable, and as we were already familiar with some of Pete Davidson's work (we also recently reviewed Hulu's "Big Time Adolescence"), we (Jamie, mostly)were very excited about this one. The big performances here are the side characters. Backed up by industry veterans Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr, and Steve Buscemi, the chemistry between Burr and Tomei are believable, and Buscemi's delivers in his role as a quasi-mentor who helps to give Davidson the proverbial kick in the pants he needs to make some changes in his life. As Buscemi's firefighter character says: "Your dad was a hero. And heroes are necessary. And they should be allowed to have families." We're big fans of Steve Carell and Greg Daniels around our own office, so we had high expectations for the new "Space Force" series from this duo. Daniels built his name off of "The Office" and then "Parks and Rec". Now he has two new series with "Upload" (Amazon Prime) and "Space Force" (Netflix) releasing close together. "Space Force" reunites Carell and Daniels in an attempt to recapture the magic. With giant set pieces, a noticeably bigger budget (not a lot of special effects needed in Scranton), and a revolving cast of big-name guests across the first season, "Space Force" makes a valiant attempt in its satire of the 6th branch of the Armed Forces. Does this new series blast off? Or does this rocket fizzle on the launch pad? Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues! Netflix Description of "Space Force": On June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States Armed Forces. The goal of the new branch is "to defend satellites from attack" and "perform other space-related tasks". Or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.
"13th" is an Academy Award-nominated documentary that takes a hard look at the prison system and the criminalization of African Americans in the U.S. This documentary examines the imbalance between the rise of the private prison business model against the Thirteenth Amendment. When profits depend on keeping people incarcerated, were is reform? Where is justice? Check out "13" on Netflix, and see why this moving documentary won a Primetime Emmy award. How do you handle childhood trauma and a broken father-son relationship? If you're Shia LaBeouf, you find the ultimate catharsis in turning the camera's lens inward to create a movie analyzing yourself. "Honey Boy" is a loose adaptation of LaBeouf's own Hollywood story filled with successful roles, broken dreams, and an abusive father. At times dramatic, darkly humorous, and incredibly honest, this film blurs the line between what one man knew his father-son relationship was as a child, against what he realized it was as an adult, layered over what he wished it could've been. "Never Have I Ever" is a semi-autobiographical romp through the eyes of a high school teenager from series creators Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling. How does a teenage girl juggle modern life as a first-generation Indian American against all of the normal drama found in high school? In a mark Netflix has become known for, the casting team has put together a group of fresh faces for this new series: for many of them, this is their first real role besides one-off parts like "teenager at party" in previous shows. Pulling in some solid reviews from both fans and critics, this newest outing blends Kaling's penchant for self-deprecating truth layered with a bit of magical realism and a hefty dose of sarcasm. Fans of "The Mindy Project" will recognize the narrative beats that Lang and Kaling became known for in their previous collaborations. Dr. Dolittle returns with fan-favorite Robert Downey Jr. in the eponymous role. Tony Stark saved the universe, but all of RDJ's skills may not be enough to save the wandering plot in this latest adaptation of the doctor who can talk to animals. Much like Plimpton the ostrich in Dr. Dolittle's menagerie, this tale never quite gets off the ground. We also chat about Netflix's "Dead to Me" season 2, with a spoiler-filled conversation. Just in time for Mother's Day, we stream "Lady Bird", which focuses on the complex relationships between mothers and daughters. This directorial debut from Greta Gerwig begins her relationship with Saoirse Ronan in 2017, as the two also collaborated on Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's beloved 1869 novel "Little Women". Naturally gravitating toward strong female characters in her projects, "Lady Bird" managed to pull in multiple Oscar nominations for Gerwig's first outing, including: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. Critics have been responding to the Ronan-Gerwig partnership, as both of their two collaborations boast Metacritic scores in the low 90s. We also talk about the newest project from "Office" and "Parks and Rec" front runner Greg Daniels, who now brings us "Upload", a Robbie Amell ("The Flash") vehicle that takes a look at the afterlife with an Asimov twist. Somewhere between comedy and philosophical drama, this is one we're going to keep our eye on. And the new "Hollywood" mini-series about tinsel town after World War II looks like an interesting show, as well. Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues!
No doubt you've heard about the plight of the honeybee over the past several years. "Honeyland" hones in from the macroscopic view of the species to focus on a very personal honeybee story at the micro-level. This independent documentary shows the story of the last Macedonian wild beekeeper in a remote mountain region of the Balkans. Without giving too much away, tradition is met with "progress" as the film examines the Venn-confluence of conservation, nature, and consumerism. And stuck in the middle is a woman fighting isolation and trying to keep the old ways alive. Nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Documentary Feature and Best Foreign Language Film, this directorial debut of Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov was the most awarded film at Sundance, garnering praise for its cinematography, as well as landing the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for documentaries. Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues! And if this inspires you to get some all-natural honey, check out our own Nurse Recruiter Peter Somers, a man who owns multiple beekeeper suits: https://youtu.be/6phk-E2r1FI Fun Atlas Trivia: "Macedonian Beekeepers" was one of the names Dolan was considering for his band.
Hunters - Atlas: Now Streaming Episode 61 by Atlas Medstaff
"Big Time Adolescence" is a coming-of-age story from writer/director Jason Orley. Now on Hulu, this indie film has a very indie vibe as it sets out to tell a tale of "youth in revolt" (IndieWire), and adults in a perennially stunted adolescence. The biggest names you'll recognize here are Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson and longtime actor Jon Cryer. SNL's Davidson plays Zeke, a college drop-out who befriends a high school teenager, played by Griffin Gluck (Locke & Keye). While Gluck's 16-year-old Monroe deals with the normal high school issues, Zeke waxes and wanes poetic with oddball life lessons for his young protege. Whether the movie works for you or not is up to you, but the collaboration between first-time director Orley and Davidson worked out, as they got together again for Davidson's stand-up special "Alive from New York". (See what they did there?) Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues!
At its heart, "Onward" is a classic story of brotherhood retold through the lens of Disney Pixar's creative team. Onward may take place in a fantasy realm of elves, dragons, and magic, but the portrayal of two brothers played by Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Rec) is eminently believable. In this world founded by magic, society has lost touch with the magical. Progress marches on at the expense of wonder. But when a surprise gift bestows two brothers with a magical spell, they have a chance for something they never imagined: to spend one more day with the father they lost. While the subject matter may be a bit heavy, it's also full of laughs, magic, and an adventure worthy of the best Dungeons and Dragons campaign. A touching tale for fathers and their sons, parents and their children, and a look at the magic that can be found between siblings. In this episode, we also chat about John Krasinski's positive, upbeat "Some Good News" YouTube project, as well as Killing Eve, and 100 humans. Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues!
Maybe the weirdest thing about "Tiger King" is that just when you think it can't get any weirder, it manages to outdo itself. It's worth noting that the full title of this Netflix docu-series is "Tiger King: Murder, Madness, and Mayhem", and it constantly strives to one-up itself in all three categories. If we had just five words to describe "Tiger King", they would likely be "What did I just watch?" If we had a few more, we'd mention the unlicensed zookeeper who went to prison for murder, more than 1,000 captive tigers and lions, Joe Exotic, Carol Baskins, drug lords, cults, polygamy, money, magic, and weird country-western ballads backed by equally bizarre indie-produced music videos. To quote one of those songs: "I saw a tiger, and now I understand." But -- we watched the whole thing and we still don't understand. If you like bizarre true crime stories that get more bizarre every few minutes, with strange twists and turns, this is the big cat ride you've been waiting for. Join us as we tiptoe down the dark rabbit hole of the new Aaron Hernandez documentary from Netflix. A sad tale, this docu-series tells the story of a promising football star that some characterized as "a ticking time bomb" who threw it all away in a downward spiral that ended with betrayal, drugs, guns, lies, and murder. If you like a solid documentary or true crime stories, this is one you'll want to join us for. We also chat about Harmony Korine's Matthew McConaughey vehicle, "The Beach Bum" (where Matthew puts his inner bongo-playing id to screen), the "Tiger King" story making waves, the dark suspense remake of the classic H.G. Wells story "The Invisible Man", and the season finale of "This Is Us." Join us as we practice safe social distancing and catch up on our streaming queues!
"Locke & Key" is the latest screen adaptation of writer Joe Hill. Is this a lock you want to pick? Keyhouse is a mysterious antebellum relic full of many doors and many secrets. The sprawling house has layers of surprises that are slowly uncovered by a handful of young protagonists. As each key is found, you'll find yourself wondering what door it opens in the sprawling mansion. Or is the key for something else? This new Netflix series offers mystery, suspense, and anxiety to anyone who constantly loses their keys. Based on the Eisner Award-winning comic book series by Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, the Netflix adaptation is more kid friendly, but still offers plenty of surprises and mysteries to unlock. If you are unfamiliar with the work of Joe Hill, he is heavily influenced by the writings of his father. His full name is Joseph Hillstrom King, and he was literally raised on the work of novelist Stephen King, his dad. Open some strange doors with us as we venture into Keyhouse. We leave the big screen behind this week to look at a little 2001 made-for-TV Disney Channel flick called "The Luck of the Irish". If you were a fan of this era, you likely recognized the phrase "A Disney Channel Original Movie", and it may strike all sorts of nostalgia for you. If you have forgotten what these films were, IMDB also recommends a pile of similar made-for-TV shows that include: Johnny Tsunami, Motorcrossed, Zenon, Smart House, Brink, and Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire. In "The Luck of the Irish", Kyle Johnson discovers he has mad basketball skills and his lucky streak is actually because his mother is a leprechaun. Astute viewers will recognize this as "Teen Wolf" but with leprechauns, and likely fewer werewolves and van handstands.

Dear Traveler, we accept the fact that you sacrifice full Saturdays on the unit to help people who have done nothing wrong. But we think it's crazy that some people don't understand how amazing you are. The world sees you as they want to see you -- in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. Sincerely yours, -- The Atlas Club It's hard to believe, but today marks the 35th anniversary of the beloved cult classic, "The Breakfast Club".
