The difficult second album. Released February 3 1997, Freak Show hit number 1 on the ARIA charts and the first three singles were all in the top 10. It went double platinum in Australia and gold in the US, where it peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200 (before slipping quickly). Leo Lavalle , the winner of the 1985 Junior Wimbledon Championships, has lived an incredible life in tennis. As a pro he rose to 51 in the word and posted wins over Brad Gilbert, Anders Jarryd, and Stefan Edberg. After the great Hall of Fame player Raul Ramirez, he is the best player to have come from his country, and as a Davis Cup stalwart carried the hopes and dreams of Mexican tennis onto the court with him for a record 14 years. On this episode of Under Review, Leo Lavalle, now a broadcaster for ESPN’s tennis coverage in Mexico, is going to explain why the Acapulco Open is fast becoming a tennis fan destination. He’ll share what it was like to turn pro in the mid 80’s as racquet technology and fitness regiments were changing drastically. Leo will explain why Davis Cup was where he played his best tennis, and why the team format was so important to him. He'll tell us about a 16 year old Spanish phenom that he thinks is a male version of Coco Gauff. And he’ll share who he think can beat Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros. Leo Lavalle joined us from his home in Carretero , Mexico. We talked about tennis in length, via Skype. Brian Vahaly , once named to People Magazine's most eligible bachelor list, has lived an incredible life in tennis. As a child he was afraid to swim after seeing JAWS, and began tennis as an infant . After a standout career at the University of Virginia, he initially struggled on the ATP Tour. Coming up with players such as Robby Ginepri and Andy Roddick, Brian told us his story of perseverance. Three months after, and the citizens of Treme (2010) are still rebuilding their lives. Antoine Baptiste is a musician adverse to paying cab fares. LaDonna, Baptiste's ex-wife, throws shade on the neighborhood brass band section whilst searching for her lost brother. Toni Bernette is a lawyer/crusader who loves bread pudding. Her husband, Creighton (really?), bickers with a British reporter. Albert Lambreaux wears all the feathers as he's got fire can't put it out make lew-lew dewey-dewey bottie bomb-bow. Don't ask restaurateur Janette Desautel about her house, or her poor taste in men, which includes professional music snob Davis McAlary. Played to great irritation by Steve Zahn, Davis is a definite contender for worst HBO character. (For additional anti-Zahn conversation, listen to our commentary for A Perfect Getaway.) (9:50 - 57:27) ... January 16, 1920 was one of the darkest days in American history as the idiots who ran our country decided to address the symptoms, not the causes, of toxic masculinity by making illegal the one thing that gets us through each excruciating day: alcohol. Boardwalk Empire (2010) is about American Hero Nucky Thompson, his hero buddies, including Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano, and Al Capone, and their noble quest to keep us well and truly sauced despite the centurions at the FBI. So, raise a glass of caramel-colored fermented potatoes to these brave men, who in defiance of a ridiculous law, aided our great nation in weathering the dry and dreadful storm known as Prohibition. Plus, babies in cupboards. (57:28 - 2:23:02) ... Also, the Deadwood film, His Dark Materials, and intimacy counselors. (0 - 9:49) | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. He then heads to an old castle where he is due to cover a story as Clark Kent. He arrives and meets Lois and a Mrs Macardle as well as the other participants of the SEANCE. Most important member being Cassandra Craft, a blind medium who senses Clark's inner nobility burning like a great fire despite his outward behaviour as Clark Kent. The Seance is being conducted at midnight on the 50th anniversary of Roland Randall, a Modern Master of Mysticism, as per instructions he left before his death. As they conduct the séance, the spirit of Roland Randall is greatly agitated, warning them not to summon him now,.as he is the only one holding “them” back. With the last warning shouted, Cassandra screams passes out for a moment. Clark observes the storm seems to be back, even though he sent it miles away earlier. With his Super-vision he scans the clouds and spots two nightmarish figures, and abruptly excuses himself as Clark Kent, feigning cowardice. After Superman Departs what appears to be Dracula and Frankensteins Monster burst through the castle to abduct Cassandra, but are thwarted when Superman intervenes. After a brief fight where neither is able to hurt the other. Dracula and Frankensteins Monster flee. Dracula then hides and overhears that Superman has no special resistance to magic. He then plans to to bite Superman and drain his blood, thereby gaining his invulnerability rendering him immune to a stake in the heart, then finally killing Cassandra as without the person who summoned them, they cannot be sent back. When Daylight hits, Superman heads off to find a cure while Lois stays in the Castle with Cassandra. Unfortunately he has to attend a meeting as Clark Kent, during said meeting Frankensteins Monster stops a food truck and starts eating all the cakes inside. Clark is refused dismissal from the meeting so he is forced to secretly suck all the air out of the room so everyone needs to rush outside. As Superman, he tackles the Monster and takes the fight to a construction yard. Before the fight is concluded however, Frankensteins Monster is called back by its master, Dracula as its nearly sundown. Superman races back to the Castle, but on the way, grabs a balloon. The relentless storm returns that night as Superman is guarding Cassandra, when Dracula and Frankensteins Monster arrive, They fight on the ramparts, and eventually Superman sets Frankensteins Monster on fire and knocks him out with an uppercut.Dracula then attempts to use his powers of Mind Control on Superman, but Superman is able to resist just enough to pull out the hydrogen balloon he had from earlier. In this bonus episode, we assume the identities of our favorite Deadwood characters for a unique role-playing experience. Steve is our GM (Game Master) for this mod of the RPG Apocalypse World, and he does a fantastic job establishing a post-season three narrative for us to act out: "Who killed Cy Tolliver?" Unfortunately, we do not resolve the mystery this go 'round, but we'll regroup at some point during the next few months to conclude this hilarious/nonsensical adventure. (Hopefully, I will have sobered up by then. What can I say, Steve, except: "I apologize....") | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. It's Valentine's Day, and whether you're single, married, coupled, or a member of Andrew Keegan's sex cult, HoopleCast wants you to know you are loved. That is why Matt, Claire, Will, Mel, and Matt H have recorded this unnecessary commentary track for the Timothy Olyphant-led ensemble flick The Broken Hearts Club colon A Romantic Comedy (2000). Although, calling this a "comedy," is a bit generous since everyone in this movie is a real candle-lighting, necklace-wearing, Carpenters-listening-to sad sack. Except Purple Guy. | Tags: Zack Braff's Hair, Talky Intellectual Gay, Gotta Go To Kentucky To Raise Men, Gays Grow On Trees Lesbians Grow On Bushes (ba-dum-dum), Secret Brit!, The Promiscuous Gay, Jennifer Aniston Traded Up, Olyphant's Arms Are Not On Point But He Has Very Perky Man Breasts, The Theatrical Gay, Dawson's Creek Shared Universe, Come Here And Let Me Fix Your Tits, Let's Join The Ladies And Make One Great Big Lady, Stop Harassing Your Brother For His Sperm, Dean Cain Conservative Question Mark, Zack Braff's Pants, We Have Not A Child Among Us, RSVP John Mahoney. | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. David Milch's follow-up to Deadwood, John From Cincinnati (2007), is the metaphysical surfer drama Chris Carter wishes he created. A weirdo calling himself "John" (is he autistic? an angel? Dougie Jones from Twin Peaks: The Return?) disrupts the lives of the deeply unlikable Yost family, led by matriarch Cissy (Rebecca De Mornay, yelling) and patriarch Mitch (Bruce Greenwood, floating). The series aspires to find grace through both the sport of surfing and encounters with the divine, but the pilot is messy, loud, and, frankly, a bit dull. But, worth it just to hear Carol say "donkey show." (12:01-1:14:47) ... Softcore porn meets indy film-making in Tell Me You Love Me (2007). If you've ever wanted to see Penny from Lost give Ben from Parks and Rec a handjob, you're in luck. (Also, who are you?) It may be the least sexy show about sex ever made, but it did give me the visual of grizzled crew members operating prosthetic penile contraptions, which is pretty hilarious. (1:14:48-2:23:16) ... Also, the Deadwood film, Here and Now, and Watchmen. (0-12:00) | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. It's a new era for HBO as the premium cable network launches its first successful dramatic series, the relentlessly grim Oz (1997), which ran for an impressive fifty-six episodes. Our guest Steven brings a fan's enthusiasm to the discussion of "The Routine," which introduces us to the prisoners and administrators of Emerald City--before Jon Seda and his penis (yes, Mel, rewind the tape, because you missed it) suffocate the episode. (8:33-1:10:30) The first installment of From the Earth to the Moon (1998) is a far more optimistic, albeit slightly dull, palate cleasner. The Soviets have launched the first man into outer space, igniting the race to land a man on the moon. "Can We Do This?," the premiere of this twelve-part mini-series, concerns the Mercury and Gemini (not pronounced how you'd think) programs. There's a lot of white guys in shirts and ties looking at screens and dials. It's not as exciting as that one astronaut movie (title TBD) Carol loves. (1:10:31-2:21:03) ... Also, the trailer for the Oprah Winfrey vehicle The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. (0-8:32) | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. There's an element to the music of David Rothschild that appears casual and comfortable to a listener's ear. But to quote an old ad, don't let the smooth taste fool you. There's a hard-earned craft to his songwriting that belies his EP, Simple Changes. This debut sounds like the lived-in effort of a seasoned veteran. Released February 2015, on the heels of a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, David is just getting started with a sound that reminds you of The Band or early 70s Elton John, but of course is distinctively his own. Visit him online: http://www.davidrothschildmusic.com/#!home/mainPage Talk Music Talk Playlist/028: Weathered Sounds:Compiling this week's list was too easy! Episode Two. Stephanie of PotentialCast joins us to discuss "Deep Water" an episode featuring gross people doing gross things, like urinating in chamber pots, urinating in chaps, urinating on the sides of buildings...
