Parks and Recreation changed the trajectory of actor Jim O'Heir's career. He landed a small part as Jerry Gergich on the NBC sitcom, ultimately becoming a series regular. Now, 10 years after the show wrapped, O'Heir is out with a memoir, Welcome to Pawnee. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's Juana Summers about the moment the character clicked for him, the "Parks" family group text, and whether the series could work today. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a resource that you can most likely find at your own library: Newspapers.com, a repository of archives from all over the U.S. and six other countries. Find your great-grandparents' wedding announcement or read up on crimes like the Panama Hat Heist of 1904.Terri's random recommendation this week is not one, but three books: Two she's recently finished, and one she's just starting. She finished (and loved) A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and enjoyed Jim O'Heir's memoir about Parks & Rec, Welcome to Pawnee--but suggests skipping the audiobook on this one. And as a dutiful English major, she's now reading Everybody Behaves Badly: The True Story Behind Hemingway's Masterpiece The Sun Also Rises by Lesley M. M. Blume. Mentioned: The TV adaption of A Gentleman in Moscow, which we watched and enjoyed last summer. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2019 on parenting best-sellers on Amazon. Guess what? Things haven't changed much in five years!Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E4, "Everybody Hates Hugo," on Tuesday, January 14Shrinking S2 E11, "The Drugs Don't Work," on Wednesday, January 15Weekly roundup on Thursday, January 16Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Leave it to Mark and Allen to wait until the podcast is almost done to deliver an interview like this. It was so great to meet with Mike Scully - what a nice guy, a great conversationalist, and a good sport! Not only is his body of work fascinating, but he doesn't mind when we accidentally add credits to his resume that don't even exist (keep your ears peeled to hear Mark make a royal screwup, LOL). The boys were extremely lucky to get a chance like this to talk with Mike around late September 2024. We got to hear about Mike's work on big shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond and The Simpsons (and Parks of course), what he thought about acting as Pawnee citizen Pearl, concerns he had about Champion the 3-Legged Dog, his start in stand-up (and two famous people he met in the process), and many, many other topics. Please tune in and listen to a thoroughly interesting and tremendously entertaining conversation with writer/producer Mike Scully.

Birdie Wermy had moments of connecting to running early in life. But it wasn't until she was an adult that her journey with the sport really got going. At that time, Birdie was going through some big life challenges, and a co-worker suggested she participate in a running event. That was where it all started. Birdie Wermy lives in Oregon but is originally from Oklahoma. She is the mother of two, and she is a native woman, of Southern Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Pawnee ancestry. As part of her running story, Birdie also embarked on a life of sobriety. That has been a central part of discovering a deeper connection in her running practice, resulting in more meaningful experiences, growth, and healing. This deeper connection manifested in a particularly strong way at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, which Birdie ran as a member of the Native Women Run team. Emmy-winning actor Jim O'Heir, best known as Jerry from PARKS & REC, chats with Trey Elling about WELCOME TO PAWNEE: STORIES OF FRIENDSHIP, WAFFLES, AND PARKS AND RECREATION. Topics include: Auditioning for Ron Swanson (0:00) #2ing himself, on camera (7:34) Getting permission for some stories (12:07) Learning to kiss from Rob Lowe (16:42) Throwing a 1st pitch at Wrigley (19:15) An ode to PARKS & REC (25:07)
Jim O'Heir has almost 200 acting credits to his name, appearing on dozens of iconic TV shows like ‘ER,' ‘Friends,' and ‘Better Call Saul.' But as he reveals in this episode, he almost turned down the role of Jerry Gergich on ‘Parks and Recreation' because his agents worried it was too small. O'Heir writes about his fateful decision to take a chance on what could have remained a “background” part in his new book ‘Welcome to Pawnee,' which is part memoir, part oral history and all around love letter to the show that changed his life. The veteran character actor shares stories about auditioning for Ron Swanson, finding out he and Retta had been elevated to series regulars just of Paul Schneider (Mark Brendanawicz) had been let go, learning that Christie Brinkley had been cast as his wife, and why he believes the show is still comforting people in dark times nearly a decade after it went off the air. Plus, O'Heir delivers perhaps the all-time greatest answer to our final question: What's a memory from your career that you laugh about now but really was not funny when it happened?Buy Jim O'Heir's Welcome to Pawnee: Stories of Friendship, Waffles, and Parks and RecreationFollow Jim O'Heir on Instagram @therealjimoheir Follow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein and Threads @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: - Atira, named for the Pawnee goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening Star orbits the Sun inside of our path. Atira, the first of this type of asteroid, was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research Program using telescopes in New Mexico. Atira is a stony object more than a mile in diameter, spins on it's axis of rotation once every three hours, has an irregular shape, and orbits the Sun once every 233 days. This asteroid was named Atira who is a goddess of the Native American Pawnee tribe. She is the wife of the creator god, Tirawa [Tire a wa]. She is the goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening star. - Should martian microbes be sacrificed to human space exploration? It is unlikely that any living organism could survive being blasted from the surface of a planet, travel through interstellar space on a meteoroid, survive a fiery entry through another planet's atmosphere, and be viable when it reaches the surface. However, humans are breaching this interplanetary barrier. We have robots operating and are planning to land colonists on the red planet. This situation has prompted doctoral student Daniel Helman of Prescott College to ask the question "If Martian microbial life is discovered, is it ethical for humans to colonize Mars even if that means spoiling the environment of the microbes?" You know, true professionals wouldn't hold out until the very end of their podcast series to deliver the "big guns" like this ... but Mark and Allen have never been accused of being true professionals, have they? Oh my gosh ... Talking with Jim O'Heir was truly a pleasure, and an outright blast! He was so easy to talk to, so friendly, that we probably could have gone on for another half hour if we really wanted to. The boys were extremely lucky to get this chance to talk with Jim around mid-September 2024. We got to hear about Jim's upcoming book, how they filmed the 2020 Special, his thoughts on the series finale, and LOTS of other things, including his opinions on Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Paul Schneider, Aziz Ansari, Retta, Ben Schwartz, and many others. Please tune in and listen to what ended up being a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable time with Jerry Gergich himself, Jim O'Heir. Perhaps our best Pawnee Spotlight ever.
On a hilltop in Kansas stands a weather-beaten monument to the Indian, who at the time of the placement of the statue was becoming a memory of days gone by. The statue continues it's vigil over the valley below but in the overgrowth of the hill, it is unseen, except for those who know where to look. The Indian, the statue, has a story that mirrors the Indian, the people. The Indian c. 1920 The Indian today. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTIST! Check out all we have to offer at withinpodcast.com! Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen continue (and finish) the Episode where we see what ultimately happens ... to everyone. TO RECAP: As Leslie and the gang face their last day together in Pawnee before everyone goes their own ways, one final little job crosses their path ... fixing a broken swing. Mundane though it may seem, Leslie throws herself into it with her typical level of gusto, convincing the rest of the gang to band together to do this one last task. In the process of going through the necessary motions to get the swing fixed, we do deep dives into every single person, including time jumps into their futures, so we can see how things turned out for them. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Will they get the swing fixed? Will everyone get the story they want? Can Mark and Allen make it through this last episode review? How many times will Mark break down? What will the boys do with Robonstantine? Will we ever hear from Constantine and Harvey again? What is WITH that stupid f**king Stargate portal and the post-it notes? Everyone ... hold hands, smile, laugh, and be grateful for the good things in life ... of which this series was certainly one.
This week I covered "Pawnee Commons" from season 5. Leslie is dumbfounded when a man from Eagleton wants to help; Andy finds that his new weekend gig is very boring; and the parks crew helps Tom get Rent-A-Swag going. Pawnee's got a pest problem, and it's up to Leslie to find a new head for the Department of Animal Control. Meanwhile, Ben approaches fragrance mogul Dennis Feinstein about a large charitable donation for the Sweetums Foundation, and Ann helps Ron get over a bad case of strep throat. Jim O'Heir and Greg Levine break it all down in this week's walkthrough of “Animal Control.” Plus, Kevin Symons (Sexy Dexy himself!) joins Jim and Greg to talk about his recurring role as Pawnee's sleaziest politician, Councilman Dexhart. Mona Lisa Saperstein just rolled into town and *spoiler alert*, she's the woooooorst! Rob Lowe is back to help Jim O'Heir and Greg Levine host one big Town Hall and you'll never believe where they've set the scene. This week we tackle some of our listeners' most burning questions, like how the characters from “The Outsiders” would fit into the world of Pawnee, what a Chris Traeger ice cream flavor would taste like, and who would reign supreme in a Josh Lyman/Leslie Knope debate. Comedian and writer Joe Mande (Parks and Rec, The Good Place, Delocated) joins Jim O'Heir and Greg Levine to break down Pawnee's response to a hypothetical avian flu outbreak, Andy's attempt to pass the police entrance exam, and Ron's surprisingly good appearance on Pawnee Today. Plus, Joe discusses the ins and outs of writing his first episode of Parks, his recurring role as Morris Lerpiss, and the real story behind Tom Haverford's paper iPhone in “Sex Education” (S5E4). “Diane Lewis? More like Diane Sawyer!” In this week's episode, Jim O'Heir and Greg Levine break down Leslie and Diane's first meeting, Jerry Gergich's surprisingly lovely home life with Gail (played by supermodel Christie Brinkley), and the sexual hurricane that is Tammy II. Plus, Jim and Greg give their top pick of who they think would be the last Pawneean standing on a Pawnee access television version of “Survivor” in this week's Town Hall segment. Special Agent Burt Macklin (aka Andy Dwyer) hangs up his shades, Tom gets Rent-A-Swag up and running, and Leslie and Ben cross the border into Pawnee's smug sister city Eagleton to collaborate on a park design for Lot 48. Jim O'Heir and Greg Levine are breaking it all down in this week's rewatch of “Pawnee Commons.” Plus, Jim and Greg think up vanity license plates for our main characters in this week's Town Hall segment.
