Legendary music producer, the mysterious Swan (Paul Williams) is searching high and low for the perfect sound to open up his ultimate Rock Palace. While holding auditions he hears it, Winslow Leach (William Finley) presents his epic cantata, Faust. With the help of his right hand man, Philbin (George Memmoli) Swan plots to steal the music away and give it to his own find The Juicy Fruits (Archie Hahn, Jeffrey Comanor, Harold Oblong) and sets Winslow up to be sent away to Sing Sing. Succeeding in sending Winslow away, Swan attempts to open The Paradise with stolen music, upon hearing this Winslow escapes on a rampage that ends with his head in a record press, disfiguring him. Believing he's dead, Swan again attempts a reopening this time with the Juicy Fruits as the Beach Bums who Winslow, now the Phantom, attacks again. In the following auditions, the Phantom insists upon Phoenix (Jessica Harper) is the only one who could be his voice and sells his soul to have his music heard, but Swan cannot tolerate perfection in anyone but himself so again he he searches for another to sing Faust when he finds...Beef (Graham Greene) who dies onstage performing a dead man's music at the hands of the Phantom. Since someone burned for her to sing, Phoenix takes the stage and takes her place beside Swan as his bride set for assassination on stage the following night. The days are long and the nights are frightening, nothing matters anyway and thats the hell of it - Phantom of the Paradise, this week on Doom Generation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/doomgeneration/support

Florida man, prolific musician, burgeoning standup comic, and old friend of the Rev's from his scene kid band days(daze) Joe Seul joined us to discuss the Harmony Korine film, The Beach Bum.Joe brings a fresh and almost, dare I say, pure sort of curiosity and sense of exploration to his myriad creative projects. From a tall, black, laser and smoke-spraying monolith at his live shows, to a Galapagos nature video shot on-location and featuring an original score, to an acoustic live show alone in the woods that was literally for the birds, a controversial dip into talk show host, and on to his next horizon: standup comedy. We chat about this stuff and the state of things in general, reminisce about Florida, how scenes are not necessarily communities and vice-versa, the tendency to push big red buttons, and the elbow brushing with insanity that some gifted artists are prone to. Joe was also kind enough to donate the sick opening track (Selena Gomez [#4]) which you can find on his website below along with other wild stuff he's done.Donate to Soapbox, freeloader!DOOM MODEMDos Semanas En Galapagos - a wildlife film by Broken World ProductionsYX984 - Glow in the DarkFlorida, Man - A Concert for Birds1-800-FUNK-SAUCE.com SHOW

Chapter 1: This is the story of how two different kickers used the same strategy to climb from rock bottom to become the best amateur kickers in the country. Lou Groza Award winners Alexis Serna (Oregon State Beavers) and Brad Craddock (University of Maryland Terrapins) came close to quitting for different reasons, but the way they overcame obstacles was the same. These two kickers explain the mindset of “kicking not to miss” and how it almost ruined their promising kicking careers.Chapter 2: This chapter was inspired by a conversation with former Syracuse Orange kicker Cole Murphy in the summer of 2019. In that conversation, Murphy explained that he felt all the best kickers had a “beach bum” like quality to them. The concept became the starting point for this entire podcast series. Are all great kickers like “beach bums”? Had reporter Cole Weinstein uncovered the predictive personality trait that determined whether someone could make it big as an elite college or NFL kicker? We answer those questions with the help of NFL veterans Pro Bowler John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), whose careers each spanned over two decades in the NFL.Interviews include Alexis Serna (Oregon State Beavers), Brad Craddock (University of Maryland Terrapins), Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints), Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers), and more. These two kickers explain the mindset of “kicking not to miss” and how it almost ruined their promising kicking careers. Chapter 2: This chapter was inspired by a conversation with former Syracuse Orange kicker Cole Murphy in the summer of 2019. We answer those questions with the help of NFL veterans Pro Bowler John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), whose careers each spanned over two decades in the NFL. Interviews include Alexis Serna (Oregon State Beavers), Brad Craddock (University of Maryland Terrapins), Morten Andersen (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons), John Carney (San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints), Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers), and more.
