Mr. Ridenour introduces his new book "A Season of Madness: Fools, Monsters, and Marvels of the Old-World Carnival," explaining how the project grew out of his research for "The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas."  In this episode, he sketches out chapter themes and topics, from ancient Rome to modern Bulgaria, focusing particularly on cultural hinterlands where festivities still echo the cruel realities of the old, agricultural world and where medieval Christianity intertwines with pagan practice. The Carnival portrayed is at once beautiful, strange, and savage. Spring is welcomed by clowns waving inflated pig bladders. Stalking sheepskin monsters brandish clubs bristling with hedgehog spines, and plows are dragged over cobblestone streets by celebrants wearing masks painted with cow's blood. Folk horror fans take heart as the Old World welcomes Spring! Available now for pre-order.  US Publication date, May 6, 20205. A few advance reviews of the book: "Sumptuously illustrated and written with clarity, eloquence, and wry humor, "A Season of Madness" is one of those rare books that can pass muster as an academic study yet also provide a good read. Al Ridenour's meticulous research exposes the subtleties and outrageous quirks of a topic you didn't know you wanted to learn about until you picked up his book. Under his direction, the madness once again reigns, as the neglected history of European Carnival is placed center stage before the reader, in all its seedy, wild, and triumphant glory." —Dr. Paul Koudounaris, author and photographer of: "Faithful unto Death," "Heavenly Bodies," and "Empire of Death" "A Season of Madness" is a fantastic carnival of a book. Equal parts irreverent and erudite, it lovingly captures the depth, complexity, and subversive nature of the carnival, from its ancient roots to modern expression. Gorgeously illustrated, intellectually hefty, and also fun, it is a seductive introduction to the material cultures, legends, and history of this perennially fascinating and slippery subject." —Joanna Ebenstein, Founder and Creative Director of Morbid Anatomy

Cast your mind forward, right to the end of your life. Are you:A. Riddled with disease, dependent on minimum wage workers at the local care facility (which you've paid for with your house, super and pension) eating Deb mashed potato out of a tray… or;B. Gorgeously wrinkled, surrounded by loving kids and grandkids you can still lift on your shoulders and hitting Nando's with your mates from Mahjong. If you chose option A, you're in luck. That's the way most of us will go. But if you're in camp B - you'll want to tune into today's episode of Next Of Kin. In it, biohacker and longevity strategist Nick Engerer and I discuss how to increase not just our lifespan but our healthspan (read: more yay, less tray), and the fact that we're spending a whole lot of our hard-earned cash on staying healthy and well. In fact, Forbes reckons the global health and wellness market is estimated to grow to a staggering US$13 trillion by 2031. So my question is, with a booming wellness market… why aren't we more well? Most people go straight to spending money to make changes. You've got the right motivation - you want to be healthier, you want to live longer, you want to make a change - great! But that change is not made by purchasing something. That's the biggest mistake people make. Nick EngererSo if, like me, you want to age as gracefully as an elderly ballerina - with skin that looks perpetually pulled into a bun and enough upper body strength to haul your own suitcase on your frequent travels - you're in for a treat. Oh, and all those skincare products you keep After Pay-ing? You might wanna rethink those. Sneak peek here… In the episode, we explore: * [02:00] The incredible opportunity of aging - chronological, biological, aesthetic aging and more (and why your appearance is an asset you want to take care of)* [04:30] Body says gym, hair says party! The Bondi-fication of women's aging* [07:13] Introducing the longevity mindset* [12:00] Shifting focus from lifespan to healthspan: how to live better for longer * [15:42] Say goodbye to health overwhelm and hello to your longevity strategy* [19:40] Your health dashboard. Need-to-know data and how to capture it* [24:15] Lost, miserable, exhausted - how journalling can help us track what's working, what isn't and even pipe down our inner critic * [29:00] Test and measure, test and measure. How you are (probably) already biohacking in your own life… * [32:00] Longevity technologies - how Nick and his company A Longer Life works out what products to try (and where we can all save our $)* [36:50] Questions to ask before you ‘add to cart' (asking for a friend who keeps getting served hormone-balancing menopause ads)

This week, we discover fear pays poor wages as we're joined by comedian and good old Saskatchewan boy Rory Dunn for an unseen classic from his extensive physical media collection, about desperate men on a dangerous mission. It's 1977's Sorcerer, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, Amidou, Ramon Bieri and Peter Capell. Gorgeously shot and backed by a synth score by Tangerine Dream, it's a white-knuckle thriller, as Friedkin follows up The Exorcist with a movie that feels just as tense and scary in an entirely different way. Plus, all three of us have been to the movies recently, with theatrical field reports on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Hit Man. Other works referenced in this episode include The Saint, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, The Wages of Fear, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, The Mandalorian, LOST, Thief, Star Wars, The French Connection and Jaws, among others. For more of Rory's opinions on film, check out his Substack over at https://movieslikerory.substack.com/. We'll be back next week with another classic, as it's finally time for Hayley to get around to watching Bogart and Bergman in 1942's Casablanca, a choice cut from her collection that is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz. And a reminder that our canon consideration at the end of this month will be the Wachowskis' Speed Racer. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Writing has been medicine for Nancy Slonim Aronie. At nine months old, her son Dan was diagnosed with diabetes. Then, at twenty-two, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. During the years she and her husband took care of Dan, and when he died at age thirty-eight, Aronie could not find the book she needed. So she wrote her memoir. In teaching memoir writing, Aronie has found that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it is important. Sharing “this is who I am, these are the things that shaped me, this is where I am now” allows a kind of magic and healing to happen. In this podcast she shares how to write through where YOU have been and experience deep understanding, profound healing, and even unexpected joy. About Our Guest: Nancy Slonim Aronie has been a commentator for National Public Radio's All Things Considered. She was a Visiting Writer at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, wrote a monthly column in McCall's magazine and was the recipient of the Eye of The Beholder Artist in Residence award at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. How can witchcraft help us participate in re-enchanting the world? How do we reclaim our strength and power to enable us to listen to the messages from the spirit of the earth? What is the danger in magic? To many in the magical world, my guest in conversation today, Amanda Yates Garcia, needs no introduction. Amanda is the author of Initiated: Memoir of a Witch - one of the most dearly beloved text in the community. Gorgeously written, Amanda's book has accompanied many, myself included, through powerful rites of passages - ones that our overculture and conventional education systems never prepared us for. Amanda is also the host of the incredible podcast Between The Worlds. In our conversation, we dove right into the deep end, discussing Amanda's creative process, what her witchcraft practice means to her, the connection between capitalism and depression, and what it means to re-enchant the world and to re-connect ourselves with the spirit of earth. The depth of Amanda's contemplation and the fullness of Amanda's presence are so deeply inspiring to me, and this whole conversation had me at the edge of my seat. This conversation is a must-listen. It's my deep honor to share this conversation and Amanda's brilliance with you. Here's Amanda's bio:Amanda Yates Garcia is a writer, witch, and the Oracle of Los Angeles. We're back, Bat-Fanatics, and rapidly (for us) approaching the culmination of Season 3! This time Joe and Kendall pull a fast one by picking a comic so recent it was only collected in trade a month ago, Batman: The Imposter. Those of you who loved The Batman will find several similarities within this book. He is a Bruce Wayne imagined in the real world. He battles crime with simplistic gadgets, minimal support infrastructure, and near suicidal tendencies. What happens when someone poses as Batman and begins killing criminals? Gorgeously illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino, Mattson Tomlin's script is clearly influenced by his time working on The Batman's script. There are definitely some great ideas here. The real question Bat-Fanatics must ask themselves is: which Batman do you prefer, one rooted in realism or one rooted in traditional comic book storytelling? We can't answer that for you, but we sure give you our opinions! Plot Pandemonium: Batman: The Imposter #1-3

Romance, Representation, and Publishing  Andi and Lise discuss what's known as the lesbian fiction publishing industry (as distinguished from “mainstream” publishers that publish LGBTQ+ fiction) and the role of books that feature romance as a main plot in the industry. They unpack the scarcity of genre fiction in lesbian fiction that isn't romance-driven (but may include romance as a subplot) and discuss the pros and cons of being defined by a particular genre. Does the universe embody beautiful ideas? Join me on a cosmic journey with Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek. We will embark on a voyage of related discoveries, from Plato and Pythagoras up to the present. Wilczek’s groundbreaking work in quantum physics was inspired by his intuition to look for a deeper order of beauty in nature. This is the deep logic of the universe—and it is no accident that it is also at the heart of what we find aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.   Wilczek is hardly alone among great scientists in charting his course using beauty as his compass. As he reveals in A Beautiful Question, this has been the heart of scientific pursuit from Pythagoras and the ancient belief in the music of the spheres to Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, and into the deep waters of twentieth-century physics. Wilczek brings us right to the edge of knowledge today, where the core insights of even the craziest quantum ideas apply principles we all understand. The equations for atoms and light are almost the same ones that govern musical instruments and sound; the subatomic particles that are responsible for most of our mass are determined by simple geometric symmetries.   Gorgeously illustrated, A Beautiful Question is a mind-shifting book that braids the age-old quest for beauty and the age-old quest for truth into a thrilling synthesis. It is a dazzling and important work from one of our best thinkers, whose humor and infectious sense of wonder animate every page. Yes: The world is a work of art, and its deepest truths are ones we already feel, as if they were somehow written in our souls.   Praise for A Beautiful Question: “An expertly curated tour across 2,500 years of philosophy and physics . . . [Frank Wilczek] has accomplished a rare feat: Writing a book of profound humanity based on questions aimed directly at the eternal.” —The Wall Street Journal   “Both a brilliant exploration of largely uncharted territories and a refreshingly idiosyncratic guide to developments in particle physics.” —Nature Get it here: https://amzn.to/3oh48uZ COMING SOON!!! Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality by Frank Wilczek 1/12/21 One of our great contemporary scientists reveals the ten profound insights that illuminate what everyone should know about the physical world. "Let's get down to business to defeat the Rourans!" Err, I mean, the Huns? It's the Huns, right? In the newest live-action remake from Disney, Mulan (2020) tells the story we all know and love with some significant twists and changes added in. There's no music, Mushu, or Huns to defeat. So, what's left? A badass woman saving her father from the war by disguising herself as a man and taking his place. That's still an awesome story to tell! Mulan was originally set to release in theaters back in March (you know, the before times) but was just released on Disney+ this month with a premier access fee. Gorgeously shot and fun for everyone, it's definitely worth the price. Haven't seen this one yet? Decide for yourself if it's just another Hollywood remake or an honorable retelling of a Disney classic.

Wealthy families have huge advantages when it comes to playing the college admissions game, and it’s not just more AP classes and $400/hour SAT/ACT tutors. That’s the conclusion of Paul Tough in his most recent book, The Years That Matter Most: How College Makes or Breaks Us, which Ira Glass describes the book as, “Gorgeously reported. Vividly written. Utterly lucid.” (such an "Ira Glass" way to say it.)   Tough reveals that Cash-strapped universities actively seek out prospective students whose parents can pay full tuition. Thus, despite the ongoing discussion about preferential treatment for minorities and underprivileged families, schools’ thirst for cash flow results in far more lenient criteria for the children of affluent parents.   In other words, it’s better to be a dumb, rich kid than a smart, poor kid, even though less well-off students at good schools have very similar outcomes than their more affluent classmates. Said one admissions counselor of the struggle to meet her school’s tuition (i.e. revenue) goals, “It’s not a matter of turning down kids we’d like to admit. It’s a matter of admitting students we’d like to turn down.” OUCH.   Paul Tough is a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine; his writing has also appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic, GQ, and Esquire, and on the op-ed page of the New York Times. He is a speaker on topics including education, parenting, equity, and student success. Among Paul’s previous books is How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, which was translated into 27 languages and spent more than a year on the New York Times hardcover and paperback best-seller lists. Lessons for Leaders

How often do you compare yourself to others and then get the negative emotions that follow?  With the online world of facebook, Instagram and everything else, there’s a lot of information out there about what others are doing.  And this can have a big impact on how we feel. It’s not just in the online world though, it might be that you’re comparing yourself to a colleague at work, to the friend, a neighbour … the list is endless. The thing is, we can’t control what others do, so we have to sort this thing out with ourselves. So how do we stop comparing ourselves to others? Identify What's Going On The first thing is to start to identify when this happens.  Really notice it and recognise what’s going on, not always with them, but very much with you too.  Is it a certain person that brings up the feeling with you?  What is that feeling? Is it a certain place or situation?  What is it that’ going on with you?  Is it when you see someone’s apparently happy life or affluent lifestyle?  Have you been feeling like this for a long time or were you perfectly fine an hour ago, before you saw this thing / situation? How do you feel. Really.  Be honest with yourself.  Are you jealous, feeling uncomfortable or not good enough?  Is it a deeper feeling of shame, guilt, inadequacy? The thing is, when the emotions kick in, for any reason at all, then we stop performing and the stress levels go up and confidence goes down. When you start to identify what’s going on and you bring it into your awareness, then you can do something about it.  That self awareness, whilst a little painful, can help you to work on the emotional turmoil that you're experiencing when comparing yourself to others. Assess the Situation You might want to make a list or write out your feelings or emotions about these times. You might want to take some time and give it some thought to ponder on what’s going on with you and the reason for that.  Make Some Decisions and Choices Then you can make some decisions and informed choices about what you do next. It may be that you avoid certain situations.  That’s fine, depending what the situation is.  Although there’s always going to be situations where you’re at risk of compare yourself, so eventually it’s hard to avoid all of them.  But if you keep looking at people with cars or houses you can’t afford or wandering round the designer shops, then you can avoid that. You might decide to use the comparison to motivate you to achieving what you want to, or getting where you want to be.  That’s fine if it creates a vision for your goals and targets.  However if you’re comparing a happy family picture on facebook to your grumpy teenager family – or as I did at one point, family life, when I couldn’t have children, then the plan for motivation isn’t going apply as easily. Remember that all is not how it appears. You’ve no idea the number of clients who have come to me with stress, anxiety, pressure, fear of failure, imposter syndrome and all sorts.  Yet outwardly they look successful, like they’ve got it all together and are doing well in their career (whatever that means).  I had one client who was a millionaire.  Had his own business.  Gorgeously huge house.  Did he have it ‘all’?  Perhaps.  But he was desperately unhappy and had struggles with his business and family dynamics. I was in a mastermind group a few years ago and one member said, You’ve no idea how I feel.  I have these voices in my head telling me how rubbish I am and no-one likes me, I can’t possible network and put myself out there.  I stopped her and shared what I’d seen, from the outside looking in, last time I’d seen her at a network event.  She had appeared to own the room.  A big smile, chat, sometimes a hug, people coming up to her, she worked that room.  After intros, when she told people what she did, lots of people wanted to talk to her.  I reminded her that other people can’t see inside her head. Have a think about a time when you found out something about someone and you were shocked.  Maybe they were anxious or afraid of something and you had no clue.  Maybe someone had a change in their situation and admitted they were struggling and you thought they looked so happy or had it all together! All is not as it seems.  You are not them.  Whatever the shiny, happy picture.  You are not them. They don’t have your …. Fill in the blanks here.  They don’t have your patience, your strength, your mindset, your ability to do maths, your writing skills, your humour, your knowledge about xyz.  We can go further, they don’t have your husband, wife, kids, house, job, smile, sparkly eyes, grumpy mornings, grumpy evenings … you get the gist. Comparison means you are focussing on the the wrong person.  Them.  You need to focus on you. Recognise what skills, attributes, qualities you have. Be grateful for what you have.  Begin to notice things each day.  Even the small things.  Be grateful.  It’s a simple thing that can often be overlooked.  It re-wires your brain to see the positives, when done regularly.  When you are regularly grateful for what you have, what you’ve achieved, however small, you recognise your successes and feel so much better about yourself that it doesn’t matter what others do.  A flower does not think of competing with the next flower.  It just blooms.  Be YOU.  You are unique.  We are all unique.  Give yourself permission to accept you as you are be blooming fantastic.

Ah May... the Month of Plant Sales.   When I started gardening, I would Plant Sale away my Saturdays in May with my dear friend Judy.   We would plan our way to a successful sale day, waking up while it was still dark out.   Then we'd arrive at the church or the building where the sale was to be held, we'd set up our lawn chairs at the door, and we'd pat ourselves on the back for being first and second in line. Then, we'd wait another hour or two for the doors to open. All the while, sharing our dreams for our gardens, checking our wishlists for the unusual plants we might find at the sale; and figuring out which plants we'd discovered the previous year that we wanted more of and which we deemed not worthy of getting again.     Brevities #OTD  Today May 2, maybe the original April Fools Day.     In Geoffrey Chaucer'sThe Nun's Priest's Tale a fox tricks a rooster on a day32 days after March - which would be May 2, but many took it to mean March 32 or April 1.   Many scholars now think Chaucer actually did mean May 2 as the foolish day. I guess you could say, the joke's on us!     #OTD Today is the last day of Ridvan.  The Ridvan ("Rez-vän") Festival is a holiday celebrated by those of the Baha'i faith, commemorating the 12 days when their prophet and founder resided in a garden outside of Baghdad. He called the garden Ridvan which translates to paradise. Today, Ridvan is a festival of renewal and peace. It celebrates the beginnings of the Baha’i Faith and the first law of the religion was an admonition to humanity to cease all warfare.   #OTD Today is the Annual White House Gardens Symposium.     It's an all-day event focuses on the history and the role of the White House Gardens. There are expert speakers and panelists, as well as a lunch program - and a surprise take away.    This year's symposium highlights the gardens of Beatrix Jones Farrand and Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon,  as well as the present-day White House Gardens.        #OTD On this day in 1969, Jimi Hendrix performed at the Cobo Center in Detroit.    It reminded me of a story about a succulent that ended up being named for Hendrix.   In 1995, Mark Dodero, was listening to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” while on a little botanizing trip in Mexico with fellow students Kim Marsden, and Scott and Brenda McMillan.   They had stopped to investigate a mesa in the Colonel Peninsula, about 70 miles south of Ensenada.   They group had made a new succulent discovery years earlier. Dodero thought he saw something about the terrain that made him think he might find another.   He hiked up the mesa and came upon a little plant - a succulent - that he suspected was new.   Years later, University of California, Santa Cruz professor Stephen McCabe, “rediscovered” the plant in the same area described by Dodero during his original discovery.   In 2016, the plant, Dudleya hendrixii, or “Hendrix’s live forever,” in honor of Jimi Hendrix, was recognized in the California Botanical Society’s publication, Madrono.     Unearthed Words   #OTD Today in1863 Stonewall Jackson was shot by his own men and I thought his life story contained many moving passages.   In an article in the Washington Post called, Stonewall Jackson had a soft side, it was revealed that just before the start of the civil war, Jackson had developed a love for gardening.   If you read any biographies on Jackson, his life was one tragedy after another.  His father and sister died of typhoid when Jackson was two years old. His mother died when he was seven.  By the age of seventeen, he had only one sister left from his immediate family. His first wife died after giving birth to his stillborn son. His first daughter with his second wife, Anna, died within a month of her birth.   After all this personal loss and battling life-long mental and physical health problems, Jackson fell in love with gardening. It was, no doubt, a reprieve for Jackson.     Jackson, who once wrote in a schoolbook, "A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds", used botanist Robert Buist's book for guidance. It was Buist's “The Family Kitchen Gardener: Containing Plain and Accurate Descriptions of All the Different Species and Varieties of Culinary Vegetables, that became Jackson's gardening bible and he wrote little notes in the margins as he worked his way through the guide.     In the WaPo article, it noted that  After tomatoes, asparagus, watermelon, spinach and turnips was the one-word notation “plant.” Jackson dearly loved his wife, Anna. In his garden, he planted and picked flowers for her. Ever the military man, his garden was ordered and neat.   In the Spring and Summer of 1859, Jackson wrote letters to Anna who sick and in New York for treatment.  He loved to refer to her with romantic names and he often wrote about the garden... Here's an example:   “I was mistaken about [our] large garden fruit being peaches... It turns out to be apricots and I enclose one which I found on the ground today...  just think, my little Dove has a tree full of them.”   In another letter, he wrote: “Our potatoes are coming up and I shall send you a sample of a leaf. . . . [our] garden has been thirsting for water until last evening.”   And in another, Jackson wrote,  “I watered [our] flowers this morning, and hoed another row of turnips, and expect to hill some celery this evening.” That fall, Jackson responded to the request from the governor to help maintain order in Virginia.   Four years later, on this day in 1863 in the evening, Jackson and his men were returning from an attack. They were fired on by Confederate soldiers who incorrectly thought Jackson’s group was Union soldiers.    Jackson was aware of the dangers of friendly fire, and he once suggested that "I recommend that we should strip ourselves perfectly naked," in order to avoid being shot at.  Nonetheless, that fated evening, Jackson (in full uniform) was hit by two bullets in his left arm, which was then amputated at nearby Wilderness tavern. Jackson's chaplain, Beverly Tucker Lacy was so moved by the trauma of this event that he personally carried Jackson's arm across the fields to his brother's nearby family home called Ellwood.  There, behind the herb garden, was a family cemetery.  Today, Ellwood's cemetery has many civil war dead, but the most famous interment is the only marked grave in the cemetery: "Stonewall" Jackson's left arm.   As Jackson tried to recover, General Lee wrote that Stonewall may have "lost his left arm, but I have lost my right.” Eight days after being shot, Jackson died of complications from pneumonia. He was 39. His last words were, "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of trees."       Today's book recommendation  Didier Decoin's poetic, sensual novel The Office of Gardens and Ponds - out May 2 (translated from the French by Euan Cameron). That’s a stunning cover - with a foiled carp fish.  Gorgeously gilded hardback copies of The Office of Gardens and Ponds are released to go swimming into the world today! Just look at these beauties! Are you ready to travel back to Japan 1000 years ago and relive this beautiful fable where an impoverished heroine Miyuki embarks on a hazardous mountain trek to the Imperial Palace - along with scheming monks, rampaging pirates, dancing storks and an unusual perfume contest. This is a book of historical fiction, "a string of enchantments, transforming mud into gold". Today's Garden Chore You've put it off long enough; this is the year you divide your iris.     Iris are doing their thing right now. Fighting the tulips for the best in show. Iris were once commonly called flags. While anyone can grow iris - not everyone does right by them. If you want them to maintain their vigor, vow to divide them late this summer when it starts to cool down.  You can divide them the same way you divide other rhizomatics like dahlias and lily of the valley. Just dig them up, break them apart, wash them in a 10-percent bleach bath, and replant so that the rhizome is visible on the surface of the soil.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   #OTD On this day in 1987, the Enid A. Haupt Garden was formally dedicated. It took three years to complete and was named for Haupt after she insisted on funding the entire project with $1.5 million and an equal gift to ensure their continued maintenance. As the garden was nearing completion, the Landscape Architect, Paul Lindell had prepared for the 81-year-old Haupt to preview it.   "We had arranged for several means of conveyance... including a golf-cart-like surrey. Despite the four to six inches of dust, Mrs. Haupt insisted on walking through the site, dressed to the nines and in her patent leather shoes."     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

It is axiomatic that the big three “over the top” (OTT) streaming services—Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime—dominate what and how we watch television. But how has this revolution in long-form video consumption affected the creative process? How has the new media paradigm altered the way media properties find and build an audience? And what are the some of the opportunities and challenges creators face in successfully navigating this domain? On this episode of The Medium Rules, host Alan Baldachin sits down with John Bedolis and Rich Rosenthal of the hit Netflix food/travel show, Somebody Feed Phil. The show stars Phil Rosenthal—best known as the creator of the long-running and extremely popular network sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. The show features Phil on screen as host and narrator as he travels the great cities of the world seeking authentic culinary experiences and authentic moments of human interaction. Phil has been dubbed the “Borscht Belt Bourdain”, and he brings a very specific sensibility to the show which is part NYC Jewish outer borough (Phil grew up in Queens), part LA, and, like Parts Unknown, part an ode to human understanding derived through cooking and eating. Rich, who is Phil's brother, is an Executive Producer, and John is an Executive Producer and the Director. Somebody Feed Phil debuted on PBS as I'll Have What Phil's Having, and moved to Netflix after its first season. In this, it's third season, the show has found a groove. Gorgeously shot and produced, Somebody Feed Phil is lively, warm, funny and entertaining. Episode 59 of One Week Only! Another big week of films, which was challenging since we just got back from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival, and now Carlos is at Ebertfest in Illinois! Our key film this week is "Metamorphoses," a modern-day retelling of classic Greek & Roman Mythology, based on the writings of Ovid. Gorgeously shot, this low-key fantasy blends multiple myths into a beautifully-constructed story about storytelling, and brings these 2000-year-old tales to vibrant life. Not many people have seen or talked about this film, but we feel it's one of the best movies of the year so far. Directed by Christophe Honoré, this magical film is a must-see. It already played in Los Angeles & New York, but it opens this weekend in Chicago, with hopefully more cities to follow. (1:04:35) We also review the wonderful biopic "A Quiet Passion" about the life of American poet Emily Dickinson with an incredible performance by Cynthia Nixon, directed by Terence Davies (7:30); the documentary "Tomorrow" about everyday people around the world working to help the environment, directed by Cyril Dion & Mélanie Laurent (16:30); the period drama "The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki" about a boxer torn between training for a big match and a blossoming relationship, directed by Juho Kuosmanen (24:15); the powerful documentary "Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982–1992" about the people and events surrounding the LA Riots, directed by John Ridley (31:15); the drama "Somewhere Beautiful" about parallel stories of struggling relationships, directed by Albert Kodagolian (41:45); and the shocking drama "The Student" about the dangers of religious fanaticism, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov (52:10). In 1909, a canoe bearing ailing German explorer Theodor Koch-Grünberg (Jan Bijvoet) arrives at river’s edge, where the young shaman Karamakate (Nilbio Torres), ostensibly the last member of a decimated tribe, waits warily. Theodor is searching for an exceedingly rare flower that he believes could cure him of his fatal illness.Resentful of whites, Karamakate agrees to help only after Theodor promises to lead him to other surviving members of his tribe. Their journey takes them through rivers and jungles ravaged by European interference, climaxing at a mission where a sadistic Spanish priest lords over a huddle of young indigenous orphans. Meanwhile, in a parallel narrative set in the same region in 1940, American explorer Richard Evans Schultes (Brionne Davis) conducts his own search for the elusive flower in the company of an older Karamakate (Antonio Bolívar) in a landscape brutalized by the rubber trade.Recalling such visionary films as Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man and Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Embrace of the Serpent grips with suspense as it captures a dialogue between representatives of two worlds in devastating conflict.Gorgeously photographed in silvery black and white, this elegiac adventure story surveys a vanishing way of life and the natural world that we neglect (and abuse) at our peril. Every year in spring, when people hear me talking about the shows that just opened at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, they get confused. “Wait . . . what? Just opened? You mean LAST year! Last SUMMER, right? The Shakespeare festival is in summer.” My response is usually along the lines of, “Yes, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival runs in the summer. But it opens in February. And it closes in October.” It’s true. Each year, OSF produces eleven shows between the Spring and Fall, beginning with four shows that open toward the end of February. These are in their two indoor theaters. In June, the big outdoor theater opens too, and that’s when tourism in Ashland is at its highest. But Sonoma County theater fans who prefer smaller crowds do take the six-hour drive up to Ashland before that, and for those willing to do so, there are some very good new shows waiting for them: a world premiere adaptation of a gothic novel, a classic American musical, and two shows written by Shakespeare himself. I’ll talk about the Shakespeare shows today. Listen tomorrow for my reviews of the other two. Playing in the Angus Bowmer theater, "Much Ado About Nothing" kicks things off with a comedic bang. 'Much Ado' is, after all, a comedy. But William Shakespeare had a way of writing comedies with plots that often veered close to the teetering edge of becoming tragedies. "Much Ado About Nothing" is one of those, with a story that ventures so far into dark and dangerous territory it becomes difficult, bordering on miraculous, actually, for some directors to ease the production back away from that brink, back into the realm of lightness and love and humor. With 'Much Ado,' director Lileana Blain-Cruz works that kind of miracle by making actual sense of certain plot turns that usually baffle the directors put in charge of making Shakespeare’s various merry mix-ups make sense. Did that make sense? Blain-Cruz sets the action in a modern-day version of that Messina, a world that includes such things as toe socks and exercise equipment. But the show still carries elements of an ancient fairytale with plenty of European splendor. The story involves several characters being tricked into and out of love, for good reasons and bad. The cast is spectacular, and they do a good job of giving believable underpinnings for actions that often seem unlikable or unforgivable. The emotions are rich and nuanced, the comedic elements beautifully carried out, the language is crisp and clear, and the climax is believably bittersweet, with just the right touch of hope and happiness. One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime was "Pericles," a play that has not felt much love for over the last hundred years. Maybe it’s because this epic high sea adventure is not exactly simple or cheap to produce, what with its rapidly changing scenes, flipping like a slide show from exotic islands to ocean storms to shipwrecks to more exotic islands to brothels and palaces and graveyards and jousts and sacred temples to resurrections and battles and tricks and riddles and pirates and kidnappings and, ultimately, the timely arrival of one very helpful goddess. In this case, she’s on a trapeze. Sort of. Not exactly. Anyway, it’s cool. Gorgeously directed by Joseph Haj, the play-that-can-no-longer-be-staged has been turned into that rarity of a theatrical event: a magical, richly emotional play that is, form it’s acting to the unchecked loveliness of its visual presentation, pretty much perfect. In Victorian England, the unhappy wife of a repressed doctor yearns to feel alive - and finally takes matters into her own hands. In an imaginary steam-punk version of Victorian England, a band of brave, opera-singing women similarly yearn to be happy, free - and a little bit naughty - and they make it happen through the power of song. In East Berlin, Germany, a mysterious woman with a powerful secret survives against impossible odds, ultimately becoming an inspiration to a young American journalist. She survives through the power of her own belief in herself. In three productions either currently running or about to open in the North Bay, the concept of “gender” is just the tip of the iceberg in stories that challenge us, the audience, to look beneath the surface of some amazing human beings - some real, some fictional - all with something to show us we might not be expecting. Let’s start with "Heroines," opening tomorrow night at Sonoma State University. This one is a brand new original musical review featuring classic operetta tunes from the likes of Bertolt Brecht, Franz Lehar, Gilbert & Sullivan and others. It was created by musical director Lynn Morrow and stage director Jane Irwin Hammett, who appropriately titled their piece, "Heroines." Set during a time of radical change in England, when women were demanding the vote and a whole lot more, the piece pulls famous females from out of other stories and throws them all together. Due to a magical twist of time, these women from various centuries join forces to express their feelings through indelible songs borrowed from shows like "The Threepenny Opera," "The Merry Widow," and other musical masterpieces, and number from the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. In a fantasy version of London, these iconic characters come together in a city blending visuals from Dickens with ideas from Jules Verne, joining their hearts and voices in a revolutionary effort to break the shackles of tradition and inequality. Sounds fun, huh? New shows deserve our support, and SSU, in recent years, has made a strong effort to present at least one original show a year. And with voices recruited from SSU’s Departments of Music and Theater Arts & Dance, this is a production that probably will sound like a blast of pure operatic dynamite - and then some. Meanwhile, At Cinnabar Theater, Doug Wright’s Pulitzer-winning one-actor drama "I Am My Own Wife" introduces audiences to a different kind of heroine: the real-life Charlotte von Mahlsdorff, a transgender woman whose courage - and possibly a bit of treasonous duplicity - allowed her to escape Hitler’s concentration camps, and survive, in her own way, operating a small museum under the noses of her enemies, all during the communist party’s decades-long reign of suspicion and terror. I’ll be reviewing it in full next week. And finally, there’s Sarah Ruhl’s eye-opening drama, "In the Next Room," subtitled, "The Vibrator Play." This is a daring move for the usually fairly reserved Raven Players. The play looks at the marriage of a late Victorian woman and her husband, a doctor specializing in the treatment of hysterical women. He has been using a new treatment, made possible through the power of electricity, which seems to leave his patience extremely happy, and eager for their next appointment. It only his wife could become the focus of his attentions, she - and maybe even he - could find what is missing in their lives. Gorgeously written by Ruhl, it’s a love story with a jolt of raw truth, another story of what happens when strong women are given the power they need to take control of their own destinies, their own happiness, their own world. "I Am My Own Wife" runs February 6-22 at Cinnabar Theater, cinnabartheater.org. "Heroines" runs February 5-15 in the Evert B. Person Theater at Sonoma State University, Sonoma.edu. "In the Next Room" (or "The Vibrator Play") runs through February 14 at Raven Theater, Raventheater.org
