This health-related podcast, like my earlier one on cancer with Dr Teo Soo Hwang (see link below) is also a personal one, as I have lost a number of friends and close acquaintances to heart disease in recent months. In some cases, the deaths were shocking, since they happened to seemingly healthy, fit and well-adjusted people. Not at all – at least superficially – that fell within the definition of ‘high-risk'. I resolved to attempt to better understand the Whys and Wherefores of heart disease, which meant there was only one person I could speak with: Dr. Suren Thuraisingham, an old family friend from back home in Penang. Dr. Thuraisingham is a very experienced and highly respected cardiologist, having practised medicine in this field since 1990. He very kindly agreed to answer my questions about why even young and seemingly healthy people are dropping dead from heart attacks, among a whole host of related issues, including whether a link exists between Covid vaccinations and heart diseases. In this episode Ellen and Richard talk about what a "crusade" was in the Middle Ages. Richard explains what modern historians mean by the term "crusade"--and why there is so little agreement. He also offers a response to a question posed by Nicholas Morton in the previous episode: How did the medieval Church reconcile its doctrine of love of enemy and its pacifistic underpinnings with papal sponsorship of crusades?Recommended reading:Western Historiography of the Crusades Riley-Smith, Jonathan. What Were the Crusades? 4th edition, Ignatius Press, 2009. When this was first published in 1977, it represented the first serious effort to explain what historians mean when they refer to crusades, and remains a key work. It is also short, 177 pages, and clearly written. As I took the title for this episode from this book, it is only fair that it is listed first. Riley-Smith's The Crusades: A History and the volume of essays he edited, The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades are good introductions to the subject.Constable, Giles. Crusaders and Crusading in the Twelfth Century. Routledge, 2020. Constable is responsible for the categorization of modern crusading historiography into four schools, Traditionalists, Pluralists, Generalists, and Popularists. He is also the scholar most responsible for recognizing the importance of charters as source material for crusading history. Giles, who passed away in 2021, was a welcoming and generous scholar who helped me appreciate the importance of culture in medieval warfare.Housley, Norman. Contesting the Crusades. Blackwell Publishing, 2006. A survey of the key historiographical debates over key crusading issues (defining the crusade, origins of the First Crusade, Intentions and Motivations, etc.). Tyerman, Christopher. The Debate on the Crusades. Manchester University Press, 2011. From the blurb on the back cover: “This is the first book-length study of how succeeding generations from the First Crusade in 1099 to the present day have understood, refashioned, moulded and manipulated accounts of these medieval wars of religion to suit changing contemporary circumstances and interests.” It is a bit idiosyncratic—Tyerman has strong opinions about the work of fellow scholars--but the author clearly knows his stuff. Tyerman also has the distinction of being the author of one of the longest single volume histories of the Crusade (God's War, Harvard U. Press, 2009) and one of the shortest (The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction, Oxford U. Press, 2006). Muslim views of the CrusadesHillenbrand, Carole, The Crusades: The Islamic Perspectives. Niall Christie, Muslims and Crusaders: Christianity's Wars in the Middle East, 1095-1382, from the Islamic Sources. Routledge, 2014. This week on The Diamond Duo Podcast, Tom and Tony take one final look at the MLB offseason and the many moves that have come with it! They go over every major transaction with special focus given to some of the larger deals such as the signings of Freddie Freeman and Carlos Correa. Once each move is analyzed, the two proceed to grade the offseason of some of the most noteworthy teams who actively participated (I'm looking at you, Cleveland). These teams include some of the slam dunk winners like the Blue Jays, Dodgers, and Braves, in addition to some of the biggest disappointments like the Yankees, Reds, and A's. Before all this, however, the two cover some of the biggest headlines going around the league! From the retiring of Andrew Miller to the reunion of Albert Pujols in St. Louis, no stone is left unturned. What we really don't want you to miss (as if we'd want you to miss any of this) is the beginning of this episode in which Tom and Tony celebrate 500 listens in less than 20 episodes. Catechism Class: LD17B Q45 Many Infallible ProofsIn this class, we continue to prepare ourselves to consider question 45 in the Heidelberg Catechism. In his commentary on this Lord's Day, Ursinus chooses to spend time establishing the historical factuality of the Resurrection of Jesus, before taking up the points made in the catechism itself, dealing with how the resurrection affects, impacts and blesses the believer. The catechism assumes we will already be assured of the importance and historicity of the event itself. We are following his example. In our last podcast, we looked at why a firm and confident belief in the Risen Saviour is essential, for our proclamation of the gospel, for our personal religion and for our eternal hope. So we need proof. We need to know that Jesus rose from the dead - for sure. Without any doubt. So let's spend this episode reminding ourselves of the classic proofs of the resurrection. It's a longer than usual episode, for I want to bring you as much biblical text as I can in a short podcast, and because of that, I'm splitting it into two parts. The online podcast will have a musical interlude. So let's see what Luke means in Acts 1:3, when he wrote, to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs…What WERE those infallible proofs?Read the NOTES HERE.Music: Psalm 13 courtesy of and with thanks to www.ThePsalmsSung.orgSRP Theme: "In Another Time" licensed from www.NeoSounds.com Hosted on Acast. When eccentric recluse Simon Strong, who lives in a perpetually chilled state, vanishes (leaving some rather suspicious remains behind), his only known associate—a teenage delivery girl—is interviewed by the police! Cast List Amber Sorensen - Krystal Baker Simon Strong - Joel Harvey Det. Phyllis Jermyn - Julie Hoverson Det. Howard Upton - Reynaud LeBoeuf Music: Kevin MacLeod (Incompetech.com) Recorded with the assistance of Ryan Hirst of Neohoodoo Studio Editing and Sound: Julie Hoverson Cover Photo: (courtesy of Stock Xchange.com) "What kind of a place is it? Why it's a police station, can't you tell?" ******************************************** Chillin' This didn't actually begin with me choosing to adapt another Lovecraft story (in this case "Cool Air"). Frankly, I really liked the 1999 short film, and have a soft spot for the version made for Night Gallery back in the 70s, so I never really considered Cool Air as a priority for adaptation - it had already been done well. Plus it was kind of low hanging fruit - one of the simpler, more straightforward stories to adapt. Previous to this, I had produced Within the Walls of Eryx, and even before that, while studying screenwriting, I had practiced adaptation by playing with The Thing on the Doorstep, turning it into an hour-long screenplay that I eventually re-wrote into an episode of 19 Nocturne Boulevard. Nope, this started when my niece Krystal and I went to see the film Juno. We enjoyed the movie, and leaving it I decided I wanted to write a sassy teenage character, and started clicking through plots in my head that I could slap her into. The irony of sticking a character HPL would undoubtedly loathe into one of his stories did not escape me, and when "Cool Air" crossed my mind, it basically started to write itself. I hammered out the script in less than a week and sent it to Krystal and asked if Amber sounded reasonably authentic, since Krystal was right about that age herself. Her response was "Could I please play her?" She did, and did a great job. I really love working with and encouraging kids in the arts. Sig and Laurie (mentioned in the story as Amber's folks, but in reality my own dad and stepmom) came to watch the recording session with Krystal and be supportive, and Laurie at least can be heard in the bloopers in the end. I also owe great thanks to my friend Robyn who helped with the punk rock details. She knows rock history back and forth and I knew I just needed the right comment or two to make the character really pop. The story adaptation is extremely loose - in the original, a writer moves into a flat below a doctor who keeps his rooms unnaturally cold, and finds out that the doc has maintained his life, long past standard death, by keeping himself perpetually chilled, presumably at least in part to prevent decay. Rather than going the doctor/science route for my version, I went with magic and reanimation. I did work a little hint into the story that Simon might be considering some further hocus pocus to preserve himself, but which might involve harming Amber, and he decides he can't. On the other hand, Amber's slightly guilty concern about having her backpack possibly searched and her disregard for the missing "spooky books" might just indicate that she's not quite ready to let go yet. The original story "Cool Air" is also notable in that a female character is actually quoted as speaking - the landlady of the flats. Of course, this is only so she can be a terrible ethnic stereotype, but at least she actually talks, and may be the only female in all of HPL's major works who does. Stay tuned at the end of this for a short clip of the German version of Chillin' (retitled "Eiskalt") from Contendo Media!!! ******************************************** CHILLIN' Cast: Olivia (host) Amber Sorensen (16), punky teen Simon Strong (60s), aged punk rocker Det. UPTON You call your parents [checks notes] um, Sig and Laurie. AMBER Doh, everyone does. [slow and condescending] Those are their names, Billy. UPTON Most kids your age still call their folks mom and dad. AMBER Maybe most kids your age. Most of us would rather be cremated. [shrugs] mm. Except to their face. The folks still like to think we're all the same little rugrats they knew and love. [snort] UPTON So you make a point of lying to your folks? AMBER There's that non-sequeter again. You should really get a bug zapper. JERMYN You probably think of it as "humoring them" rather than lying. UPTON Two faced is two faced. AMBER If you can't be two-faced, you shoulda found a better one to be stuck with. UPTON Look here-- AMBER I bet you never get to play good cop. UPTON What? JERMYN Howie, maybe we should take a break. JERMYN But I'm going to trust you on that, because you walked right past one of our drug dogs on the way in, and I don't think you're the type to get caught in a stupid lie. AMBER Look, my parents actually like me to use their names - makes them feel like they're helping me assert my personhood or something. I do it to humor them. UPTON Fine. UPTON [trying to sound unconcerned] We need a physical description of the alleged Mr. Strong. AMBER Watch a video of Madness Machine on Youtube. Then figure older. A bunch older. UPTON How very...specific. How tall was he? AMBER That's kind of a pickle. I never saw him stand up - he was always in his bumper car. UPTON What? JERMYN The mechanized wheelchair. AMBER He had to avoid exerting himself [thinking] OK, so imagine classic Simon, then really thin - like even more than heroin-chic, maybe almost to starving third world skinny. JERMYN Could it have been faked? Perhaps something in the way he dressed? AMBER Doubtful, Phyllis. He usually kicked it in jams. Not much to hide behind. UPTON Speak English. AMBER [sounding british-ish] The subject in question had a strong tendency to desport himself in capacious yet abbreviated trousers, much as those the predominant choice of American surfboard riders lean toward. JERMYN [Snicker] UPTON You mean he wore shorts. In that cold? MUSIC AMBIANCE COLD ROOM SIMON If it bothers you, I could put something else on. AMBER Yeah, 'cuz like you're so tasty, Bubba-Ho-Tep, that I'm gonna totally jump on you if you keep wheeling around half-naked like that. [beat] Nah - it's kinda creepy, but I'll adjust. Like having a weird uncle. SIMON [wheezy laugh] AMBER But a cool one. I mean - not just [brr], but cool. SIMON I must be, since you're neglecting your social whirl to spend time here in this arctic wasteland. AMBER Oh, yeah - I have to sneak out the window to get away from the endless line of bimboons waiting to take me to the prom. SIMON Bimboon? AMBER It's like someone in a boy band, The guy equivalent of a bimbo. SIMON [laughs] MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM UPTON He scooted around in a wheelchair, wearing shorts, and you didn't think that was odd? AMBER Duh. Of course. UPTON But you never told anyone about him? AMBER He'd'a been pissed. Plus people woulda thought - you know - creepy stuff. UPTON What if he decided to try something? AMBER Beep beep. I can outrun a wheelchair. At least as far as the stairs. UPTON And what if he could really get up? AMBER I doubt it, Billy. He didn't have any little blue pills. UPTON [flustered] I didn't-- I meant get up and walk. AMBER Yeah you did. You're the one who's all worried he's gonna go perv on me. UPTON If you were my daughter-- AMBER Get out of the way of the door. One of us would probably be dead. MUSIC AMBIANCE COLD ROOM AMBER The bottles - it's all for your illness, right? Like the meth lab in the bathroom? SIMON [shocked] It's not a--! AMBER Doh, yeah. I was kidding. So is it a big secret experiment thing? SIMON I - I keep tracking down recipes for preparations and elixirs that ... that might help me. Some seem to work for a little while, but nothing ... lasts. MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM JERMYN [snap] Howie. Did you have any more questions? UPTON What about his hair? AMBER [snapped back] What? It looked pretty much the same. UPTON A-ha! Too clever for his own good. AMBER Not every guy over 50 needs canned hair, Billy. UPTON And this guy claimed to be THE Simon Strong. AMBER I already told you he was. I didn't even know who that was that first time, cause like I'd never heard of him before, but soon as I could, I googled him and voy-la! UPTON Vwa-la. AMBER [whispered] Beep Beep. UPTON What? JERMYN For the record, Simon Strong was the lead singer and songwriter for a punk band called Madness Machine in the mid to late 1970s. AMBER American punk band. UPTON Who cares? AMBER [earnest] It's important - British punk was British punk and American punk was-- JERMYN But you'd never heard of this band before you met Strong? AMBER [sigh] Pre-cisely. Funny sort of six degrees thing, though - once I saw the band name, it clicked, 'cuz my grandad had one of their albums in his LP collection. Serious. How's that for whoo-OO-oo [spooky noise]? UPTON [disbelieving snort] Your grandpa listened to punk? AMBER Duh. He willed his tattoos to science. Stay back from the door, Billy. JERMYN You said you met Mr. Strong --? AMBER Halloween night. That's why they had such a cool band in the house. JERMYN About nine months, then. And how often did you see him? AMBER Most days. I did his shopping and stuff and stopped in for a chat. MUSIC AMBIANCE COOL ROOM SIMON Are you a retard? The Sex Pistols were totally the Monkees of punk. They were a made band. Their manager put them together. AMBER [teasing] I suppose you met him too? SIMON Once. How much respect can you have for a guy who also created Bow Wow Wow? AMBER Bow Wow What? SIMON You must ride the short bus. Beep beep, Billy, don't stand in the way of the door. [wheezy chuckle] The Ramones, now, they were the real thing. They lived punk. AMBER You're pretty feisty for an old crip who's s'posed to keep frosty. SIMON [dry chuckle] MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM JERMYN When our people searched the "residence" over the club, they found a number of, um - unusual items. AMBER Like? JERMYN The enormous refrigeration unit that apparently kept the place fairly, um-- UPTON Meat locker-ish. AMBER [wry] So he was cool. So? UPTON According to electric company records, he was using enough energy to be frozen. AMBER And? What, didn't he pay his bill? It's his business what he does with his juice. UPTON There are a lot of things you can do with that much juice. Things, for instance, that the narcotics squad would be very interested in. AMBER [exasperated] Beep beep. UPTON I am getting really sick of-- JERMYN Amber. Can you shed any light on the occult paraphernalia he apparently collected? AMBER It's not like I had the run of the place. We'd just hang in the main room - where all the video consoles are. He talked about some old books, though. JERMYN Did you ever see anyone else with him? Did he talk about other visitors? AMBER Oh, heck no. He didn't like people to see how sick he was, but like, since I already knew, he had somebody to talk to, right? AMBIANCE COOL ROOM SOUND DOOR SLIDES SHUT AMBER Hey! SIMON [anxious] You're late. AMBER [aping his wiped out voice] "Hi Amber, so glad to see you." SIMON I was exp-- [slight chuckle, sigh] I am. Yes. AMBER You worried about me or your [singsong] Special Delivery!? SIMON It's here? AMBER No, it's a phone book I wrapped up and sent the long way, let's see, through - wow. Egypt and London? That's tight! SIMON Open it, please. AMBER 'kay. SOUND PAPER UNWRAPS FROM LARGE BOOK. AMBER Oh, jeez - you got so ripped off. SIMON What do you mean? AMBER This is such a gag gift. It's like from that movie - "I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul!" SIMON Give it here. [pause] Ah. No, this is the real thing. The dark jewel of any occult collection. AMBER [sniffing] Ok, so it smells older than Bruce Campbell, but still -- SIMON I need to be alone. Come back next Wednesday. MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM AMBER He did burn incense and drink weird stuff. I figured it was alternative medicine, or maybe Kabbalah - that's all the rage with the red carpet crowd, right? UPTON Did he ever say what was wrong with him? AMBER Mun-yoes syn-drome, Billy. UPTON Stop calling-- JERMYN But what is Munoz syndrome? Did you ever, say, Google it? AMBER Well, yeeah. There were a couple - but they had longer names, and were like degenerative eye diseases, so I figured, you know, that wasn't it. UPTON Did you ever ask him? AMBER Well, right off I asked if it was catching, and he said no, so I figured that's all I care about, and if wants to talk about it he'll say. MUSIC AMBIANCE COOL ROOM SIMON Munoz syndrome is extremely rare. I contracted it almost thirty years ago-- AMBER Ooh! Let me guess. When you [reporter voice] "vanished from the public eye"! SIMON Where--? AMBER Wikipedia. Shh. I'm shushing. SIMON My band was in New Orleans, when this came on. Normal medicine couldn't help, so I turned to the uh, folk practitioners. AMBER Like Voodoo? No wonder you're buying all creepy books and incense. SIMON It's a lot more serious than movie voodoo, but that's close. AMBER And the cold? SIMON It slows my metabolism. AMBER Mine too - Brr. SFX THE HUM OF THE FREEZER DIPS FOR A MOMENT SIMON [gasps and holds his breath until the power returns] AMBER Wha--? SIMON [very tense] The wiring's getting old. AMBER So get a new fridge. SIMON No, the building's wiring. Between music and lights and all, it carries quite a load. AMBER You should move, then - and before summer. Seriously. SIMON How can I go anywhere? I have to stay a constant level. AMBER I dunno. [thinking] Hey, ice cream truck - I once saw this movie where they were carting a corpse around in the back-- SIMON [strong] No. No. Tomorrow, maybe you could look at generators. MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM JERMYN But he was well off - according to the IRS. AMBER He spent a buttload on his creepy books and exotic bags of dirt and stuff. [catching herself] Or, that's what he told me. UPTON And he trusted you to carry around these expensive packages? AMBER I didn't know what they were. I'd probably have freaked and got all paranoid. He said other people were after them, too. UPTON [eager] Other people? Do you think they might have taken the books after Strong disappeared? AMBER Tscha. He didn't disappear. He's dead. Beep Beep. UPTON [takes in an angry breath] JERMYN Ok, let's go back-- UPTON No, let's talk about this. You're saying that the corpse you discovered in that - what you call "the cold room" - was the person you knew as Simon Strong. AMBER It had to be. UPTON Then pray explain to me how it could be that that body had been dead for well over a decade? AMBER [shrug, statement] You're wrong. UPTON So all our experts are wrong. And you know better. AMBER [trying] Your experts obviously aren't familiar with Munoz Syndrome. That's all. UPTON Right. So you know better. You know what I think? JERMYN [warning] Howie... UPTON No, Phyl. Not this time. I'm getting tired of this little girl, trying to live in a dream world. She needs a dose of harsh reality. AMBER [hysterical laughter] Harsh reality? [can't stop laughing] You don't have a clue how harsh reality can get. [breaks down into tears] MUSIC AMBIANCE COLD ROOM SIMON Turn the thermostat down a bit, would you? AMBER Down? Dude, my eyeballs are already icing over. SIMON [pause] Maybe you shouldn't come here any more. AMBER [upset] What? [beat, then blasé] And lose the school credit I'm getting for looking after the elderly and infirm? Uh-uh. SIMON [slight wheezing laugh, turns into cough, then deep breath] I... I probably won't last much longer. AMBER No way! You're fine! Well, not fine, but‑‑ SIMON It's been coming for a long time. And the elixirs aren't working any more. Nothing is working. AMBER The book can't--? SIMON I thought there would be things I could ...bring myself to do, but it's not worth it. AMBER It's always worth living. SIMON When I'm gone, take it and burn it. Promise? AMBER If you can't use it, sell it! Use the money to get more colder. You'll be fine. SIMON No. SFX POWER DIP, THEN HUM RETURNS SIMON [long shaky breath] I always think it will be the last one. AMBER I'LL buy you a generator. SIMON Have you seen the gas prices recently? Cooling takes too much energy - even if you get one, I won't be able to afford the gasoline. MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM AMBER [still breathing in little gasps, coming down from a crying jag] SOUND WATER BOTTLE OPENED JERMYN Drink. SOUND PLASTIC BOTTLE SET ON TABLE UPTON [annoyed] Are you through? AMBER [cough, sniff] UPTON So, here's what I think is going on. This guy has been trying to establish himself as Simon Strong, famous recluse and mysterious celebrity. AMBER That's too dumb even for the short bus. UPTON Oh, yeah? Dumb to the tune of half a mil a year. Between the club, which the real Strong did purchase in December of 1979, and the royalties on his old music - particularly the musical um, chunks, or segments-- JERMYN Riffs. UPTON Yes, whatever, that people used in their own-- JERMYN Sampled. UPTON [deep annoyed sigh] During the 80s and 90s-- [waits, but there is no interjection] --he had pots of money rolling in. AMBER Which he spent on books and crud. I told you. UPTON Kid, no one spends that much on books. Did you ever actually see these books, or did you just bring him book-shaped packages? AMBER [silent for a beat] No, I guess I never actually saw them. UPTON I say he's been salting it away, staying around long enough to move everything to the Caymans and then - Voy-la - take a powder. AMBER But the body-- JERMYN [sadly] WAS the real Simon Strong. Dental records have confirmed it. But Amber, he'd been dead for a very long time. UPTON Which explains the cold. The fake didn't want the - uh - deceased stinking up the place. AMBER [muttered] Yeah, easier to freeze the whole place, than just pack a corpse in a chest freezer. JERMYN Are you up to telling us how you discovered the body? AMBER [very subdued] Sure. I got to the club, and everything was dark. I freaked-- Well, I got really worried, and ran up to his room. The body was just... there... and it was... JERMYN --In an advanced state of decomposition. AMBER Yeah, that. MUSIC SFX NO SOUND OF FRIDGE, JUST DISTANT STREET NOISES. SOUND DOOR SLIDES OPEN WITH DIFFICULTY. AMBER [Grunts] Dammit, open! damm---it [squeaks through] Simon! Simon? [almost chokes] What is-- oh jeez! SOUND HESITANT FOOTSTEPS SOUND SQUISHY MOVEMENT NOISE AMBER What the he-e-e-ll? SIMON [Almost inaudible] Turn off the flashlight. SOUND CLICK FLASHLIGHT OFF AMBER I'll get you some ice, I'll --- SIMON Damage is done. Don't go. I wasn't sure if I wanted you here or not -- for this. AMBER Can I--? Do you need--? SIMON Don't... touch me. Please. Just listen. Listen! Take the books and burn them. I need to know you will. AMBER Yeah, sure. SIMON I- I've willed the club to you. Don't get your hopes up, the police aren't going to .... [trails off] AMBER Simon! [breaking down] I don't want you to die. You can't die! [etc., sobbing] SIMON This isn't -- I... haven't... been living... for a long time. Let me go. AMBER No! SIMON Shh! AMBER [controls herself] Shushing. [gasp] SIMON In 1977, I O.D.ed on heroin and, [gasping cough] -- I... died. It was never reported because a local Bocor brought me back... AMBER [small voice] Like a zombie? SIMON [sigh, not quite a chuckle] I knew you'd understand. AMBER But we can do it again, right? Bring you back? SIMON [dying, trailing off] Beep Beep. Get out of the way of the door, Billy.... AMBER [sobs] MUSIC AMBIANCE INTERVIEW ROOM AMBER Guess I'm glad it ain't him - the ... borscht. But he was cool. For an old dude. UPTON If he contacts you in any way-- AMBER [dryly sarcastic] Oh, sure. I'll be right on the phone to you. UPTON Do you understand the meaning of accessory to fraud? Harboring a fugitive, maybe? AMBER Well, I do watch a lot of TV. Besides, it's not like I'm getting anything out of it. UPTON The club has been transferred into your name, Amber Sorensen with an E-N. The heirs of the real Simon Strong will probably contest it. AMBER Pff. Don't care. Are we done? JERMYN You'll have to wait a few minutes while your statement is typed up. Once you sign it, you're good to go. AMBER Sure. Hey, did your CSI guys really not find any books or anything at the scene? JERMYN Nothing of any importance. UPTON And no clue to his offshore account. AMBER Hmm. Oh well. [grunts with effort] SOUND CREAK OF LIFTING A HEAVY BACKPACK ONTO HER BACK JERMYN You going to be OK without a coat? It's a bit chilly out tonight. SOUND DOOR OPENS. SFX OFFICE NOISE. SOUND COUPLE FOOTSTEPS AMBER Really? [laughs] Nah. I'm cool. SOUND FOOTSTEPS LEAVE. MUSIC MODERN COP THEME, FADE OUT CLOSER OLIVIA Now that you know how to find us, you'll have to come back. Maybe next week? Don't be a stranger - we have enough of those already... ********************************************

When Strider hears the word Gladiator he immediately thinks of his high school volleyball highlight tape. Then, like everyone else he envisions Russell Crowe challenging the foundation of Rome from the sand of the Colosseum. What a dank movie! Russell gave it to all sorts of unfortunate dudes. Did those guys pick their gear and fighting style or was there gladiatorial positions like in modern day sports? Strider reviews and compares 8 main types of gladiators and declares which is the dankest. I've been taking allergy medicine for almost twenty years. I started with Claritin, moved to Zyrtec, and then added a nasal spray (Flonase). To be fair, they all did the job. But I've been on a health kick this year, so a couple of months ago I decided to scale back the medications I was taking. My nasal spray was the first to go because it was constantly giving me nosebleeds. I mean…it was kind of badass in a way, but it's not particularly practical to walk around looking like Rocky after twelve rounds. The funny thing was, the nosebleeds were actually making my nose more stuffed up, and I felt less allergic when I stopped using my nasal spray!Zyrtec: The REAL CulpritIn high school, I used to struggle to stay awake in class. Same thing in college. Even when I started a freelance design business, I'd need to drink a cup of coffee by noontime just to survive the next five hours.I've struggled with depression and non-zombie behavior (in general) for years, so I finally thought What the hell…maybe I should stop taking my Zyrtec and see what happens.I expected an onslaught of pollen, dust, and mold. But what actually happened was a cloud lifted from my brain. I felt like an actor in one of those Claritin Clear commercials, except instead of drugs curing my allergies, my allergies cured my drugs. What Were the Side-Effects?Sure, I sneeze a few more times every day and my nose occasionally gets itchy, but creatively, it's like someone took a ten-pound weight off my brain. The best way to put it is that I feel like myself again.I've had three days in a row where I illustrated, designed, and wrote for twelve hours straight. Now, it's like…Ok, let's chill the f out—but being too productive is a great problem to have!Basically, what changed is that I'm more alert. I react to things (creatively and emotionally) where they used to hit me with a dull thud.Natural AlternativesAntihistamines like Zyrtec suppress your nervous system's response to dust, pollen, and dog fur, but they can't target those things specifically, so they just end up reducing your immune response to everything. The good news is that you can fight allergies with natural remedies.Nasal Strips: I stick one of these on my nose before going to bed and it opens my breathing up all night. I've been sleeping like a log.Cleaning / Vacuuming: Humans used to migrate constantly, so dust (etc) never collected in our living spaces. The best thing to do for your allergies is keep your house clean by frequently dusting and vacuuming.Sheets / Pillows: The same rule applies to your bedding. Change your sheets every week and use a different pillowcase every night. Sleeping with the same pillowcase is bad for your allergies AND your skin.Unprocessed Food: Eat as many plants as possible and remove processed foods from your diet, as they can cause inflammation and allergic reactions. Stinging nettle tea gets mentioned a lot, but I've never tried it.In case you're wondering, it took me about half an hour to write this article…which is record time for the old “medicated” me, but kind of par for the course now that I've embraced my allergies.I hope this article makes you sneeze. :)—Andrew
What???? We're back like cartoon dinosaurs bay, and we have a LOT of chitchat in this episode to make up for some lost time. David talks about coy-wolves, which may or may not be a new species, and Emily spoils the entirety of the 2006 romantic fantasy film The Lake House. Take a listen! (Note: Episode 11, featuring Hannah Gacke and recorded approximately a million years ago, will be out sometime this week when Emily finds the computer that has the audio file on it.)

Chris Husong is a market expert in the hemp industry. Accounting for the challenges of public perception, legal challenges, and the burdens of science to prove the claims for hemp benefits have all shaped the climate in which hemp is used today. Born in Texas, Chris moved with his parents a few times throughout the country, studied theology in California, worked in finance and telecom, and after confronting his own biases, discovered that the hemp industry needed legitimatization. Teaching the skeptics, directing messaging for correct use, and ultimately using education as the chosen tool for sales, Chris shared with GCP why the truth behind hemp is the only way to properly build its acceptance.https://elixinol.comFacebook: @Elixinol https://www.facebook.com/elixinol/LinkedIn: @Elixinol https://www.linkedin.com/company/elixinol/Twitter: @ElixinolCBD others say it's the eighth wonder of the world but whatever it is this the best way to save you 20% outbreaks filters wipers and more quality parts helpful people that snap a no no dissipating up auto parts store's loss was last minimum three exclusions apply conference 10 3119 well it's a gut check project this is episode number eight project we check our egos at the door and they get your health in check I'm here with your host Dr. Kenneth Brown I'm Eric Rieger Doug Brown I doing today I'm doing fantastic episode number eight holy cow I feel like we have the words flying through these episodes every time we come always a better guess today is no exception at all this is gonna be really exciting now is to be very exciting is your mind when you said episode number eight remember that show it is enough I don't want that to be the theme as well as Rabbi and it won't be today she was incredibly excited we have on today Christian song long term market experience within the hemp industry and he has me setting it is getting an incredible tale of coming from a world of high regulation in telecom and in banking and basically what the hemp industry means to America he's got lots of interaction stories and what it takes to make people understand the importance of hemp and how to accept the message of me what did you can you gather out of that amine Christmas we met at first two years ago yeah so my my initial meeting of Christmas two years ago that's we told the story before will repel your facts right and I walked by the lexical booth and another salesperson other than marketing person Christine Thiel grab me and the thing I remember most about that is Dave Christine and Chris all super tall like this is a really tall child apparently hip will make you taller I know you call me someone will be involved with that company so we could do some real basketball or something you know join the election all basketball team what you honestly if you're in listening to get your project today if you've ever wondered about hey look at him is new to me and I'm not really sure what to think that's that's okay today's episode is really kind incredible as Chris can walk through what it's like to to not just look at Hampton say minutes taboo that's taboo it's okay so many people started there and he's got a lot of experience in helping people understand the benefits behind him and what he can do to change their lives for what I love about this is that he comes from these industries are so regulated and she had to transform that into an industry that is so misunderstood you know when you look at that you look at his bio he only looks on website it says it is skilled in helping people and companies overcome their psychological creative and strategic barriers so that they can achieve the professional personal and creative goals so more than just be the chief marketing officer this guys can be my life coach break through all those barriers yet when Ken and Chris Chris's got a lot of a lot of expense he actually went to theological theology school in not in California but were to talk about that for sure yes that means because just think about the transition nearly everything he's gone through in and of course and he's either great guy can't wait from to join the show hit the bottom of the hour course that they were have KPD KB MD's corner where basically Dr. Brown will die do like he's been doing the last seven shows in address some recent research topics and get tiny previews about what to talk about your two minutes yeah so what we always like to do is try to have a bootable format here so everyone knows what to get it into the show so we know we have a fantastic guest I also want to talk about some recent science it's out there so we have forcefully graduate student that helps us out and she sent a really cool article about ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease the same disease that killed Stephen Hawking right I have a very personal tide of this because when my good friends Dr. Russell Veronica in San Antonio a gastroenterologist that I've trained with and with medical school with his father unfortunately passed away of this so I saw this article which to my knowledge the first one that actually looks at ALS and CBD ties in perfectly because we have Christmas song near chief marketing officer now we can't make disease claims what we can say is look it may help some of these different diseases where there really is no treatment and this is a really cool study that I wanted didn't and it's also even said that because today shows can be so incredible and that the way we learn how to balance real information and what we can legally say as a marketing person and then what the consumer can do with both of these angles to kind of piece these puzzles together much like the episode we had last time in stem cell oh yeah you know this fascinating cool stuff you like why don't more people know about this will Chris has to deal with that every day is like no we can say this we can't say this oh my goodness yes is be fantastic if we did this but we have to do it this way because his background I think is a perfect background coming from the super regulated industry to an area that is so gray that you really need somebody very disciplined like him to sort of take the reins and that's why think election all such unique company yet without question let's get some of the paying the bills out of the way and first off the bat love my tummy.com/spoony what could that be in reference to well I believe you're talking about my baby trying to I am trying to so we talk about how our transit was initially developed for bloating and digestive issues change in bowel habits abdominal discomfort what I am seeing a whole lot of which is really cool really getting into this practice of just coming up in the next few weeks that are professional triathletes we have different bodybuilders and things like that that we have slated to come in one of the things we do realize is that the polyphenols in trying to actually increase blood flow to the muscles so that you can have better performance in just about everything so the polyphenols go to your: where your own colonic archer will break them down into anti-inflammatory and basically antioxidant species so that you can recover from workouts and you can actually increase blood flow so not only is it good for bloating but I encourage everyone to go to love my Tommy.com/spoony put in the spooning code SP 00 NY and get 10% off I just answered you did bring up athlete hotrod teal is the only NSF certified for sport product out there indicated for bloating what is it me so if something is NSF certified for sport specifically it means that 1/3 party the NSF foundation has taken the product and they made certain that everything you mark on your package is truthful date they can be backed up that the claims that you have for your studies are verified and that every single product it makes up the composite award the product itself is clean if you're an athlete you don't have to worry that something you and a girl you're going to take with the NSF certified for sport moniker on it might contaminate a sample or might not do exactly what the ad the labeling says so NSF certified for sport is the same thing that Richard dietitians there with MLB NFL NCAA Olympics Olympics they look for that little mark to make certain that when they recommend a supplement or an over-the-counter supplement or aid to their athletes that it's on there so they know that it's a it's a clean product and John Teal features that endorsement that's also because a lot of companies don't have that we pay to play for that eventually I think that what we should have is a KB MD endorsement over here was just means that we like the product to say absolutely right some quick follow-up from from my last week show one of the coolest things as people began to take in Dr. Wade McCann as if he didn't check out episode seven go back and listen last week if you have any questions about stem cells the future stem cells what it's like to market stem cells in this FDA over regulating environment even know you have truth in your hands go back and listen episode seven but once Wade McKenna finished his his episode all week we received email I even got texts stem cells are good for hair growth stem cells can actually help me with my sciatica that I've been dealing with for a few years it's amazing what people don't know about stem cells and then how many people said I thought whenever I used quote unquote cord blood that I was using stem cells and it turns out that you're just not so anyway last week's feedback to getting feedback from last week I got a ton of feedback I actually got a ton of feedback people were I got a lot of calls people wanted to go I think a lot of people actually call me how to actually get into Dr. Wade McKenna's practice of which I think is also because when we have some real like that they can make it make a difference I mean when I sit there and think about this we are completely under utilizing everybody with analysts on the show so far photo bio modulation stem cells once you get into the science you like wow the site speaks for itself much like CBD yes science much like outrun to the science hold its own yeah and that's a cool sinks within a marketing gimmick it's none of this and that's what Chris is going talk about how do you how to stay above how do you stay above the bar where everybody else is trying to play a marketing game and usually want to get out there and help people that's remarkable whenever you look back and you does mention it photo by modulation with James Carroll and talking about stem cells last week with the Dr. McKennitt the parallels that were running here with the CBD industry or hemp industry and what the FDA basically is doing because the FDA is it it it playing all three of share so Dr. Brown let's head into KPMG corner what's on the corner today well let's talk a little bit about some personal stuff start this is kind of interesting I'm a little bit embarrassed about this what you know how when sometimes it's too close to you and you don't know what's going on well my mom unfortunately she fell hurt her shoulder about three months ago and she's been rehabbing Kent and I was just talking to her and I just went oh my gosh did I not send you CBD that are not and she owes no I don't know you know I tried something like that some hemp oil what she tried screws that endure anything else like okay let me send you something so I sent her some bottles with some vitamin D and sufficient oil because I believe in using these fatty acids to really help brain information in such large Dr. couple days ago and she was post be doing three more months of rehab and she goes okay and it's so exciting I don't have to go to rehab anymore my shoulder feels great it actually back to normal this is after you sent everything this is after center about two weeks of using the CBD and so she's Artie on trunk Hill always has been for quite a while but so after sending the CBD and now embarrassed because I'm like oh my gosh my own mom herself and that would be something owed to the patient immediately you just forget when it's too close and then my sister who's actually black belt in aikido and she's always been yourself open to students rose to banged up my mom gave her a bottle and she just texted me this morning said oh my gosh that works so well the key to this Morgan talk about this with Chris that there are differences in different types of CBD and what is out there how you market so my personal story is sorry mama should be given to to three months ago just was too close to it we got so much stuff going on and you know fortunately better late than never she's doing great yeah I know that's a it's of these brothers, interesting so you said in another we can touch on Chris but when James was on James Carroll from outdoor laser he talked about imitators right and then last week with the with Dr. Wade mechanically talked about imitators or people that don't administer stem cells appropriately or may not actually even be utilizing stem cells but saying that they are or putting in chemicals that will destroy destroy those that are not probably not to their own fault I just don't know enough about it because the reality is we talked about this is CBD industry and I'm I tell my patients this I said I would get into a loop of the science would explain a little bit we have this new brochure that explains a little bit and we get into the fact of what your end or cannabinoid system is how it links the nervous system and the immune system put you back in balance that is so simplistic because the reality is were going to see a field of medicine called Endo Kanab analogy and your Genesee specialist called Endo Canavan allergist's share I'm convinced of it sure any of you have a hepatology ST have the endocrinologists there is actually no reason why you would have an Indo Campanella just as we begin to learn more that CBD absolutely totally agree right it's about you anything going on in the personal life personal life at the boys I mean honestly the boys are doing great. During off-season basketball who ended up I know that seems like add the theme but that's that's really what they're into but I did go shoot with my youngest earlier this week and I learned that dad dad is the worst basketball player in the household now Matt can drain from all points of the court I'm just I'm no match anymore there faster than I am and now that he's basically 6 foot tall and 15 and gauges about 61 now in 1730 I just not much I can do with with either one of them so very much dominate brain I headed down to Kaleo FX this week though oh that's right you want one of my favorite conferences to be great conference it's a chemist think that immediate which is so busy just to go this week will unfortunately I have to go to Newark New Jersey and film a national commercial for archer until Roger entails time to take out her until the next level were to be doing some national commercial so I would love it really affects would love to be helping out at the election all booth pate BMD CBD booth trash and talk about trying to learn the on the entourage effect without an CBD but I don't fly up to New York in the true commercial which I'm a little bit nervous about the Wilson estate bowing on the head Keith Michelle Noris tune into your commercial as soon as it airs big shot today and they are the one to put on file with X they do a great job if you never been that appealing effects in Austin Texas it is what's your time you going to be introduced to a bunch of different things that could probably change her health and that's how we found CBD out and say I'm very partial to pill effects last year I give a talk and one over really well talked a lot of people had to be able to get their books it was really exciting you just it just fun to see a like-minded community I did the mojo 50 show this morning we're talking about sugar and the paler community does not really eat M&Ms those guys do M&M tasting Delphi lot M&Ms of failure effect listen if you have M&Ms you to balance it out with much until Fisher 100% totally so yeah you just have a great time hello effects I will make you feel better about you not been know to beat your sons because the only person that can warm Lucas up is my daughter Carla because both my wife and I are incapable of even even hit the ball back against those guys don't know probably know why it's super humiliating I I feel memo Mike is it embarrassing that the youngest person in the family is the only person I can warm Osama before matches and vice versa they want each other up it's really cool that's get down so I'd have any hits on the on the corner before Chris joins us will I do want to bring up one thing here I will bring up an article I was try to bring up one article to talk about just now woman talk about marketing Christmas songs it's about marketing a lot of people look at the big deal I want to tell everyone about this and so on I really like to look at disease specific states And the article that we can achieve that in the beginning here is an article related to the meta-analysis was published in the Journal of neurochemistry here this year just couple months ago and what it looked at is it did a meta-analysis which is a compilation of studies usually meta-analysis I have in the scientific literature are considered to be more robust picture taking a lot of studies putting them together and this is looking at ALS known as anti-atrophic lateral sclerosis Lou Gehrig's disease is a devastating disease and as I had mentioned earlier it actually took the life of my good friend Dr. Russ of Ron Ike whose guesser Alderson San Antonio and we actually saw his dad his father correct we actually saw this progressive disease and that's the deal about ALS eight what it does is if you're unaware of it I find it to be one of the most devastating diseases out there there's a book called Tuesdays with Maury that I read back many years ago they commit a movie about it also censures about the progress the progression of ALS and somebody that where there is a caregiver helping them out and you get a feeling about how it just slowly chips away and what it does this damages the nerves that control muscles so over time all of your muscles weaken to the point where they cannot contract eventually hitting the diaphragm so you can't read you lose the ability to speak because you can't control your tongue you lose the ability fine motor movement changes first because the small muscles go and you can't button things and it is just a debilitating but you keep your mind eventually you have some mind changes and they don't really understand why it is they believe there's a small genetic component but really what it is it's an excitatory issue with the nerves releasing too many of certain chemicals that eventually do not allow the do not allow the muscle to contract on the words and try to sting like muscle doesn't work so this was quite a while ago I've been in practice for 17 years Russ and I with both med school and fellowship together it was during residency so were talking 27 years ago 25 years ago I do know anything about CBD fat I know they must be in touch two years ago so this study came out red actually showed that they looked at mice and they looked at their ability to travel distance they looked at their grip strength that she put them through some sort of little American ninja course where they had them hang upside down on the net so like a Jacob's ladder, it was it was it was really it was fascinating that I made a run a wheel what they did is they they actually looked at those that had that were given CBD and those that were the control group and what they showed across the board in this meta-analysis is that those mice I'm sorry let me preface that the mice were genetically predisposed to have ALS so they all had a lot okay okay and what they did is that they showed that the mice that were on CBD could actually run further the mice could cling long-running that they actually increase the grip strength running real activity and they had improved survival and they did not have weight loss when they looked at all the studies something stood out to me that was very interesting they were all given CBD one particular study that they look that used a Madrigal inhibitor now what Maggio is is that's the enzyme that breaks down to AG one of your Dodgers and of cannabinoids in one of these days were to get into the deep science about the inner cannabinoid system gets all complex that's a drug it's in study and it's called KM L 29 so it's fascinating that the FDA's over here try to regulate right and in the background you've got drug companies try to develop drugs to manipulate the system if they can figure out that's awesome but is really interesting because the macro inhibitor was not as good as the traditional CBD and so what they found is that CD1 and CB to agonists in other words CBD significantly delayed the decline of motor function when compared to the control group and they showed a consistent 12 to 25 days longer of normal motor function in the mouse world what you doing is really improving that so right now there's no treatment for this they've got a couple drugs available one called real you tech and one called red Dick Reddick Have Not Even Sure That That Was around When Ross's Dad Was Sick They Said That It Could Potentially Slow down the Progression by a Month or Two While the Superexpensive Month or Two That's It I Member at the Time When We Went outside and Rushes Flying All over the Country Thing Is That Everywhere There Were Trying Everything They're Looking at Using Creatine and Different Things like That so Here We Have This Deal Where We've Got Eight Now You Can't Just Translate Mouse Models to Humans But It's Really One of the First Step in Trying to Figure Some Stuff out My Deal Is That We Know That CBD Helps in Many Different Ways and I'm Not Saying That This Is a Disease Claim I'm Not Saying That This Is Functioning and Will Help but It Certainly Can't Hurt and Might Help Right so When You Have a Very Specific Disease Group like ALS to Desperate Group with No Significant Treatment I Think It's Fascinating That These Guys Went to the Trouble of Putting Together This Mouse Data to Actually Try and Figure This out so Here We Have Grip Strength Upside down Running All of It Which Means That There Is Some Potential That This Could Actually Help This Very Devastating Disease and Is Very Small Group of People Because It's Rare but When It Does Affect You It Affects Everybody It May Affect One Person so the Number the Thing We'll Talk about Is When We Say Disease Oh This Is the Incidence of This Disease This Is the Prevalence of This Disease As Somebody Who Lost My Dad at a Young Age It Affects More Than Just the Person That Dies Share the Prevalence or the Incidence of the Disease Affects Everyone Around Them Right so I Think That If We Can Help Those People with ALS If You Know Anybody with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease This Is Something That May Be Showmen We Can Certainly Forward This Article to Anybody That Would like to so Include Any of the Studies That Utilize a Mouse AMI All All of the Drugs They Began and and and Started There to Try to Find out If This Is a Workable Model and Unfortunately with Today's Highly Regulated Environment He Can't Just Keep Going Forward but Were Trying to Help People Connect the Dots This That CBD Is Safe to Take and You Shouldn't Have Any Serious Side Effects Certainly by Consuming CBD It Just so Happens That in This Mouse Model We Saw These Improvements Draw from the Conclusions What You Will But This Is What I've Seen and I Mean I Think That Were Hinting In the in the Correct Direction I Just Think That It's You Know This Is Work Were Offering Hope Church When Scientists like This Do This You Just Offer Little Bit of Hope And It Is a Devastating Disease and We Just Want to See People and Just Offer Them Something an Alternative Right And If They Can Even If They Feel a Bit Better Well We Got 20 Seconds Left Here in Just a Moment We Are Going to Be Joined by Please Think Our Dialects and the Power Power by Licks and All so Chris You We Are Now in Dallas That's Where Our Studio Is Siam in Dallas Here with You Guys Thanks for Having Me I Grew up in Plano Just down the Road Just I Know That That's Also That's Where I Live Right Now Sam Right on Teakwood Okay All Right in the Middle Was Back When There Was Still Some Farmland in That Region Roads That Were Definitely Not Paved Back That Well While You Have Made Your Journey All the Way to Being a Market Expert but It Was You Got Zero Stress Remember I Was Told about Russ and His Dad yet Will He's Just Call Me Right Here Is Try to Call Him to Let Me Describe a Little Bit about about His Experience Home on Such a Crazy Timing to Rent a Van Fantastic What Will Look at That Set up Well in the Meantime While Were Getting the Call Set up Which This Be Our First Time We've Ever Had Live Taller All for You Chris That's Awesome Though Our Weight Much to Say Go Wildcats for Plano West Guy While Nice Nice Sticky Big Absolutely so from Plano You Are You Hello When You Plan to Graduate High School There No so I Was Born in the Fort Stockton Texas Home Right Now Where Judge Judge Roy Bean the Hanging Judge a Hanging Judge Meant to Write Also the Largest Groundhog Population in Texas That at the Time Did I Know That I Seconds Probably Pretty Pretty Have Been Doing down There but No I Moved to All over Texas with My Dad Is an Engineer for General Electric Okay so We Were All over the Place and Then Moved to California Right and I Graduated College out There and Jumped around All Sorts of Places since Then Is Your Degree in Theology Theology Yeah That's Right This Is Great for What I'm Doing Preaching about Hemp and CBD What May Think That I in All Honesty When You Find That There Is Actually Quite a Bit of Similarity and There's Going to Be A Lot of Congruent Messaging Well There There Is A Lot Of Congruent Messaging and and We Can Get Super Deep on It If You'd like but Overall Community, Theology or CVD Will Get the Loan Both of Them Get Real Deep on Both but That Because I Think Are Highly Connected I Think One of Them I Don't Know How Far You Want to Get into This Right Now but CBD Itself I Think It's Is One of the Main Things in the Unit Can Have Annoyed Systems and Allows All That Better Empathy Sure Which Is What Is Causing so Much Disregard and Disconnection in Our Society Right Now Right and If We Can All Take a Significant Amount of Quality CB and Improve Our Ability For Our Brain to Connect with People and and Not Have Social Anxiety And Connect to People Then Were Going to Actually Build Improve Our Culture and and Not Not Have All These Great Divides so I Would Assume That Probably Whenever You Are Studying Theology That That May Not Have Been Your Attitude Towards CBD or Hemp Products or That Was Even on Your Radar Though My Gosh Cannabis in CBD and Hemp Was Bad Sure You Know the Devils We Write Back Then and That It's Definitely Not Something That I Supported I Told My Kids Said No Don't Do Dumb Stuff Listen to Dad and Don't Do Drugs and Cannabis Was Definitely One of Those Things and I Had to Change My Tune Much Later in Life and My Mom Actually Group Cannabis and Marijuana While She Was Raising Us in Texas and Oklahoma and Back What Was Illegal She Was like One of the Original Member That Was – She Is Original OGE That so and You Know I I Being the Rebellious Teenager Decide I'm to Put Our Three-Piece Suit and Go Learn Religion and You Look down from My Port Perch on People and Obviously I Had to Humble Myself and Admit Mom Was Right the Whole Time That Is so Fascinating I Don't Want to Break the Story Whatsoever but I Think We Have Our First Because This Is Going All Dr. Russell Running San Antonio He Is Patched in And Russ Can Hear Us Morning Man This Is Also My Was That Obvious He Heard the Show This Morning Was Talk about You and Your Dad I Appreciate That That Means A Lot It Does so Russ Whenever You Found out That Your Dad Had ALS When When You Look at the Options That Were on the Table What and in You Being Physician What Did You Think of the Landscape and What Did You Think the Options Would Be For Him and Then Now Looking Back to What What Cans Talking about in Terms of CBD and ALS What I Mean I Lost My Dad You've Lost Your Dad Can Lost His Dad and You Know It's It's No Fun for Anyone Any Always Wish That You Had the Experiences of Technology Later What What Do You Wish You Could Take Back to in Time from What We Learn Now She Mentioned That My Dad Started Get Sick with ALS Back When Can Our Medical School Diseases Just Initiated This Really Is and They're Just Just Seated Man Who Was Pillar of Strength and It Just Wait, Wait Enough and Where They Couldn't Hold a Hammer He Could Climb a Ladder and the Most Devastating Part of That for Us Was When He Studied the Single Ball Ballparks in Ankeny and Carry on a Conversation and Eat Well Anymore Back Then There Was Nothing for Writers One of Those Diseases like Pancreatic Cancer You Got It Sorry I Just Not Then We Can Do and Then I Moved down Here to San Antonio Started Launching Residency and Fellowship and Hooked up with Carding Jackson Was a Neurologist down Here Amazing Woman Who Runs a Big ALS Clinic Here in South Texas and I Started Flying My Dad down Twice a Year and She'd See Him in an Even In Her Clinic It Was the Experimental Things of This Kind of False Hope Was Some Anti-Inflammatories There Wasn't Anything That Worked and There Are Days When It Looked like It May Be a Little Stronger and Days When He Wouldn't Now 15 Years Looking Back You Know That He's Been Gone There's Been so Much Advancement in so Many of These Neurologic Diseases and It's These Natural Types of Things That Seem to Keep Coming up As Potential Cures for This and Have Even Had an Opportunity to Have Him Try Something like This Back Then I Did My Right Arm for Combat and I Would Believe That You Don't Get Back That's I Think When You Talk about Suitable Were What Is Referring to Is the Ability to Swallow the Ability to Form Wet so I Remember When Your Dad Would Come Visit and We Would All Go to Your We Would Gather His Residence Would Go to the Pool And She Would Mumble Words That Only a Wife of 30 Years Could Understand and She Would Translate so He Was Still Completely with It Couldn't Communicate but That Kinda Shows Also the Bond That Husband and Wife Can Have Watching Your Mom Be Able to Understand What Your Dad Was Trying to Say Was Very Touching to All of Us In Talking with Him and That's the Part He Hated the Most You Got Your French Don't You Go out Yes and Cocktails Have a Dinner You Care Phone Conversation When You're like That Friends Don't Want to Hang out with You Anymore Because It's Hard and Embarrassing to to Say I Don't Know What You're Saying so There Were Times When My Dad Loved to Drink Beer I like to Drink Beer I Were Small-Town Nebraska I Would Grow up up There so When He Got to That Point in His Disease And He We Had the Decision to Finally A Peg Tube Feeding Put Two But into His Stomach to Swallow Much Anymore When You Come down Here and I Cannot Would Sit around and We Drink Beer and Dad Would Set Some up in Achieving Stringent Squared Together and It Was Awesome and and One of the Greatest Things I Remember Doing with My Dad Back and When He Got to Where He Couldn't Talk Was I Flew up and Picked Him up and Took Him up to Minnesota Went Fishing and Camping for Weekend We Sat around the Campfire We Just Drank until I Can Really Talk Either Loved It but That's What That Disease Did Nothing We Tried Were I Think That What Were Seeing Now with This Is That We Can Talk on the Mode of How Potentially the End of Cannabinoid System Works in These Neurotransmitters No Rust We Have Christmas Song on the Show Today Is the Marketing Director of Licks and All and He Was Just Tell yet He Was Talking about How His Mom Actually Was The Original OG Is Raising Her She Was Growing Marijuana and He Went to Theology School, Rebelled The Opposite Way like If You Are a Pastor You Really Grow Weed If You're Growing We Bellied Theology School You Find out You Know What You Go Back to the Things Parents. It Worked and It Made Sense Mom Was Right I Long Yeah Yeah I Mean I Joke That All the Time. I Grew up My Dad Was Yellow Country Music and Bud Light Not Solid to Rock 'n' Roll and Drink Out Of Date Now 50 and I Listen to Country Music Drink Bud Light Back Here at That Time That Often Did That Because You Find Those Things Were We Did Know Hey Rossiter – Neurology Practice Are You Incorporating Type of Natural Alternative Anything like That Big and Real High Population of People That Are Educated on the Younger Patient Population That I Have an Initial Internet Savvy and A Lot Of Them Come to Me Already Knowing A Lot about These Things and Having Read A Lot about These Things It's All out There When You Look Which Having Awesome so I Do I Have Acrobatic Doctors That I Work with I Have A Lot Of Patients on CD Oils Not Just for Things like This That Were Talking about but My Miles to Christ in Crohn's Patients with Chronic Nausea Patients My Chronic Pain Patients like Everything It Works for Some and It Does Percent Doesn't. Well I Want to See How It Was with What You Can Find Is That and What I Found Is That Not All CBD Is Created Equal And so with Some Things and so We Have Chris on Right Here and That I I'm Very I Think I Have a Similar Mantra Have A Lot Of Patience to Come into Being There Already Though I'd Artie Tried to Be like My Mom Tried Hemp Oil Which Probably Was Hemp Seed Oil Now That I Think about It in the Will and so It's like All Things You Know Not All Seabees Created Equal That's Working to Get into Today for the Rest of the Show Talk about This How Do You Market That How You Get the Word out That Just Because You Tried This Blanket Term CBD You Know You Gotta Really Make Sure That They Got a Certificate of Analysis and All That so I Want to Do If You Had Patients and It Didn't Work on Listing the Rest of the Show Because It May Be That the Power Dialects All Brand Is What You Really Need That's Exactly What We Need to Hear Some I'm Glad You Get Thanks for Involving Me and Bring Back Member My Dad and Mandalay Castle Being Vulnerable and Talking about That I Think It's Important for You Know I'm the Same Way Love Talk about My Dad It's Been You Many Years Now 30 Years since He Died so I'm Lucky Enough Still Have My Dad but My Fondest Memories Are Him Drinking Coors Light on the Boat Name for Court like Nebraska State Aire's Stepdaughter Russ I Was Met Together and That Means That We We with Some Real Lean Years Were We Were Broke Ass Med Student and Your Dad Will Visit And We Would Purposely Go to Bars with a Wood Offers like Specials like in This Bar It Will and You Don't Medical Whatever I'm Agreed As I Am Still a Bud Light like You Have but You Know Such Such Beers like 50% Was like I Was like Yeah Yeah Johnny Jerilyn $4.55 Dollars to Run I Got My Recall and in This Is Awesome That Your First Call Every Now and Certainly I Deftly Appreciated I Appreciate You Guys and Will Keep with the Man Thanks for All You Do Appreciate It I See Russ Well Chris to Talk about Beer Similar Talk about Boys You Know What I'll Say This I Remember Listening to a Podcast Were One of the Reasons Why Beer May Be so Popular Is Because the Hops and Actually Have a End of – You Have a Cannabinoid -like Molecule so My Understanding Is That That Was All Made up All Really Got Some Some Marketing Guy Used His Powers for Evil Instead of Good and That the Two Companies That Are And It Kinda Leaves What You're Talking about Not All Seabees Made Same Two Companies That Were behind Those Actually Had to Admit That There Was Those Studies Were Completely Phone No Kidding Yeah That Is Fascinating I Was Feeling and Have Chris Consider Just Burst Bubble to Be Dropping Some Truth Bombs Now That's Awesome What We Were Just Wrapping up so You To Get into the Hemp Industry Because Krista Talked about His Trek from from Fort Stockton to Plano out to out to California and Then You Spend a Little Time in Germany Germany Where I Did Learn A Lot about Beer Dealer Lot Is Three and Half Years on the High School There and Going to Prom and Castles and All Sorts of Fun Stuff That's a Little Different Doing for like We Did Were in Plano Where I Would've Would've Done It Sure Sure so Then after School You Then Get into Some Regulatory I Figured out This Beeper and Pager and Wireless Things Can Be a Big Deal so I Started Selling Cell Phones and Pagers and You Know Five Dollar Minute Type Technology in and Got into the Technology World and Got into When Sprint Was in One Market You Can Only Use Her Cell Phone in Fresno Okay and Then the Only Been Growing since Then Moved from There into the Finance World and Helped with A Lot Of Regulatory World and There and Open Market under A Lot Of Rules and Regulations and While I Was There I Met a Guy Who Is Doing Documentary on Campus and He Was Put Together All These Different Case Studies and All These Different Videos and Clips of These People That Have Been Healed by Campus and at That Time I Was like No Bunch of Stoners and You Just Want You with the with the Theology Background You Carry a Bias with These Going into These Other Careers Are More Open-Minded at This Point What Based on My Initial Upbringing by My Mom Who Is Very Open Minded I Was I Was Always Questioning Authority and Questioning Things and through That Entire Process Even Going through Theology School I Was Questioning Everything around Me You Know the Minute That and Again I Don't Know How Deep You Want to Get into Religion Here but the Minute That I Heard about Their Profit Care and Oh How They the Canonization of All of the Books and How They Got into the Bible I Started to Start Questioning A Lot More and You Know They Trying Teach You That the Bible Is 100% the Word of God and Then You Decide to Figure out That Is about 15 White Guys in a Room to Decide Which Books Are in the Bible and You Only but Little Doubt in Your Head Sure I Don't I Don't Know That 15 Guys Can Agree about Anything and Deftly When Trust Something like That That's Guiding so Many People's Lives Divided 15 Guys in Room so It's It's Definitely No Been Something I'm Always Open-Minded and Looking at Things and Questioning Things I'm Click to Decide and Slow to Change My Mind so I See Something That's Right and Usually Jump Right in and Stick with It May Be Too Long and Then Dismantled That up but I Learned My Lesson Sooner or Later Click to Decide Slow to Change My Mind That Is a That Is a Great Line This It's like You Make a Decision but You Don't Have To Make the Right Decision to Make Your Decision Right That A Lot Of Times I Mean We've Already It's That Little Cliché but Sure Enough Perfect Is Sometimes the Enemy of Good Brian and I like to Move Fast and Make the Decisions What I What I Believe in My Gut I Think That If More People Moved That Way Things to Get Done A Lot Faster in Love Things I Think Doubt Self-Doubt Challenges A Lot Of Us and from a Marketer And I like to Empower People to Make the Right Decisions and Given the Right Information That I Learned Early on in My Sales Careers That When People Tell You Know It's It's Primarily Because They Don't Have Enough Information to Say Yes the More Information We Can Give Them the More Education We Can Give Them Then They Can Move Forward So It's Just That Self-Doubt That Little Gut Thing That We Need to Move Them on Let Me Answer Question Measured Market Are One of the Things That I Have Run into with My Colleagues to Coworkers and Things Is That When Somebody Is so Entrenched in Their Belief They Get This Cognitive Dissonance Where It's Almost like There Is a Logical From Then on Transits and Religion Parallels That Tremendously If There's Anything That Has Cognitive Dissonance Is When Somebody Has the Religion and You like Look Just Saying That This Is like You Said It's 15 White Dudes in a Room You Know Maybe It's Not Everything I You Know There's A Lot Of Things I Grew up Catholic so I'm I'm I'm a Recovering Catholic and We Do Know There's There's A Lot Of Things I Look Back on Them like Ha Knows A Lot Of Things Were Really Good about It Right Discipline You Know Learning Empathy Learning These Different Things Learning to Be Held Accountable for What You Do There's Higher Good Buyer Doing All This of the Stall That There's Times That I Took Away from Theology and Take Away from Christianity and Many of the Religions That I've Studied but Absolutely One of the Things That Jesus Did Many Other of the of the Profits They Questioned Authority May Question Things and so It's Really Important That We Teach Our Kids Only Teach People to Question You Know Why Is CBD Bad by Wise Cannabis Bad You Know That Doesn't Make Any Sense and You Know If You Really Want to Get Deep on Some of the the Conspiracy Theories of How This All Got Legally Illegal We Could Get down That Road to Because It Is Crazy Will It Tell You What First of All Is Not All Right Thought Would Be Going off Right into A Lot Of Parallels That with This so What I Want to Ask You Is a Marketer How Do You Was a Marketer Overcome This Cognitive Dissonance so Primarily It's Education Right What What Sit in Front of Me and What Changed My Mind Is Facts I When You Look at Some Kid Or Some Mom or Some Dad That His Life Has Been Changed Because They're Taking CBD on a Regular Basis They Went from Not Being Able to Talk To Being Able to Talk No They Went from 300 Seizures a Day Two No Seizures but Those Type of Things You Can't Deny Right Something Is Working so If You're Able Then to Dig into Why Is That Not like Rafael Mitchell and Started Right He Went to Discover the Why We Get High Right Many Found in a Can-Am Annoyed System and Then He's Figured out There's More Than One Cabinet to New There's A Lot Of People “When you hear a statistic say that the average American brushes their teeth 1.02 times a day, ask yourself how could they have figured it out? Does it make sense that it could have been researched effectively? In this case they would have had to ask and don't you think it's a safe assumption that people lied?” In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and Nat discuss How to Lie with Statistics by Darrell Huff. In this book we learn how to spot deceptive statistics, ways surveys are manipulated and the hidden agenda behind every piece of data. “If you can’t prove what you want to prove, demonstrate something else and pretend that they are the same thing. In the daze that follows the collision of statistics with the human mind, hardly anybody will notice the difference. The semi-attached figure is a device guaranteed to stand you in good stead. It always has.” We cover a wide range of topics, including: Biased samples & discarded data Stereotypes, demographics and diversity in data The Sphinx, Aquatic Apes and Conspiracy Theories Grapefruits, Graphs and Guantanamo How to question and uncover the truth behind statistics And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of How to Lie with Statistics by Darrell Huff! You can also listen on Google Play Music, SoundCloud, YouTube, or in any other podcasting app by searching “Made You Think.” If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out our episode on Influence by Robert B. Cialdini for a book with a similar structure, or the book Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Taleb for more on the deception of data. Easy to internalize many of the ideas. Useful for everyday life and not getting tricked by data. People rely on data, easily let their opinion be swayed by statistics. The book shows there are so many ways to game a statistic. Learning these rules will serve you well. 03:02 – Lots of overlap to Fooled by Randomness, similar themes for similar problems. This not a new book. Published in 1954 and is more relevant today than ever. 03:38 – Amazon reviews, can’t rely on reviews to be honest, for books, restaurants etc. People give arbitrary scores for unrelated reasons. Scoring using 1-5 or 1-10 isn’t a useful benchmark. Don’t use 7 as a score, 6 or 8 have more concrete meanings. Book reviews skewed by the emotion you feel after reading. Books that are feel-good are rated higher even though if they’re not useful over the long term. 07:23 – Bonus material, 25 minutes, mini-episode on Sphinx conspiracy theories. Check out the Patreon to get it. 07:33 – Book structure, 6 chapters. Different ways statistics can be manipulated. Final chapter gives questions on how talk back to statistics. How to think about data. Similar layout and structure to the book Influence. 08:21 – Biased samples. Where a sample is not representative or too narrow, results are also going to be the same. Psychiatrist example – everyone seems neurotic if you only work with neurotic people. Jimmy Fallon sketch, testing people’s geography knowledge. The joke is that Americans are stupid but they only show those that fail. Also the environment and element of surprise impacts data too. Biased data can’t tell you anything useful. 10:39 – Media portrayal of Trump voters. Using unflattering stereotypes that then becomes accepted as the norm. Media also uses the tactic of showing biased stereotypes of protests and violence to influence opinions on the Middle-East. 11:54 – Statistics on deaths in school vs military. Total deaths may be more in school but this data gets used to imply probability and likelihood of death – which is a completely different statistic. Presenting data one way to provoke an alternative interpretation. Data is being used to tell a story that serves an agenda. When we hear a statistic we assume it’s real, we need to question it more. 14:06 – Discarded data – Example of gallup polls, who answers these polls? Do you know anyone who has been polled? This shows that the sample is not truly representative. Twitter surveys on evolution and skewed data due to restrictive demographics in sampling. The method of survey affects the outcome. Phone polls vs online polls change age demographic. Difficulty of getting a representative sample. All samples will be biased in some way. They key is knowing what is the bias in your sample so it can be corrected or highlighted. Hillary Clinton, opinion polls. Bernie Sanders on healthcare spending. 17:56 – Averages and mean, mode & median. How average can mean 3 different things and are used in certain scenarios. The term average doesn’t mean a lot, need to understand how it was calculated. Mean is hugely skewed by a single outlier but outliers make little difference to the median. As Taleb says, never cross a river that’s on average four feet deep. Averages for income, height, grades, education and how they should be calculated. You can use mean average on things like education because there is a limit to the number of degrees someone can have. 21:34 – Startups and how they calculate their daily active users or revenue per user can be deceptive. Year to date revenue gives a better understanding than monthly. Incomes in a neighborhood can change depending on the average that is used. Once can seem high to prop up real estate figures. The other can seem low to support home owner association protests. Both use the same data manipulated to serve an agenda and presented in different ways. When to use the Mode? Use mode when dealing with non-numerical values to discover the most fashionable or most popular item. 26:35 – Health resort promoting ill informed seminars on the nutritional value of meat. Lots of common myths that we don’t do much research on. The top result on google is not always accurate, it isn’t being fact checked so we should know to research these things. 28:15 – Bonus material. Sphinx and conspiracy theories. Theories not being taken seriously by archeologists. Aquatic apes, crony beliefs and things we want to be true. 29:51 – Difficult to research for everything you hear, you have a time limitation on having to form a belief. Find sources that you can trust and discount those who don’t have the authority to speak on a particular matter. Testing authority & parents. Authority and taking advice of doctors despite how long ago their education may have been. 32:01 – Dangers of listening to people who are not experts in a particular topic. Who is qualified to talk on a particular subject? Everyone thinks everyone should have an opinion on everything. If you trust someone in one area, don’t trust them on everything. The danger of intellectual heroes. Being fans of Taleb but knowing he is not always right. Admire someone’s work but don’t look to them for guidance on everything. Don’t agree with all someone’s opinions. Don’t criticize someone for favouring one viewpoint of someone you think is completely bad. 34:32 – Difficulties of political debate. Not possible to openly agree with Trump on a specific idea like tariffs. People automatically assume you agree with him on everything. Opioid manufacturers being indicted, seems like a great idea but you can voice those opinions. Politics as the new religion. Now is more like picking a side and blindly sticking to it. Loss of discourse. Idea sports. 38:21 – Political parties flip ideals when they are in charge. No incentive to pay down the national debt. Involves imposing unpopular cuts and taxes. Cutting unnecessary spending seems logical. Latest military jet, expensive but unfit for purpose. 43:40 – Changing opinion of Trump. He wasn’t as radical as everyone was expecting. He wants to win a second term. Bernie Sanders may be more the type of person to make radical changes. Bernie Sanders as a dream podcast guest. Debating with Andrew Yang. 2020 Election. 44:54 – Discarded data. Companies continue to run experiments until they get the outcome they want. Significant portions of experiments have been discarded. What is classed as a statistically significant result? If you run 1000 experiments and 999 fail to show significant results. Using the 1 result as showing something significant without presenting the rest of the data. Antidepressant studies show negligible impact compared to a placebo but also had lots of negative side effects. Yet only those studies that showed net positive effects got published. 46:48 – Cosmetics and food companies regularly use skewed samples in their data. Skin complaints and using regression back to the norm as proof of product working. Companies start another study and keep going until they get the results they need. 47:49 – Big Data. The larger size the data set the more likely you will be able to prove whatever you want by slicing the data in particular ways. Correlation and causation. Nicolas Cage movies vs School Shootings. Ice cream consumption vs murder rates. Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Climate change vs Piracy. Nicolas Cage movies vs Swimming Pool Drownings. You can pair any two things together that rise and fall in the same trends. This does not mean that one affects the other. Small samples have a huge variance. It’s possible to get 8/10 heads when flipping a coin but so much less likely to get 80/100 however the result is still the same. You can get a significant result by using a smaller data set. Most pharmaceutical tests are not done on women. Most drugs go to market without being thoroughly tested on the female biology, the interaction with estrogen, birth control. Limited studies on the interactions with other drugs. You would think it should be tested alongside common medications. Grapefruit juice and other fruits have properties in them that amplify the potency of certain drugs so you have to be careful not to take it alongside certain medications 54:39 – Graph manipulation. Show 3 different graphs with the same data but from different perspectives they look totally different. By having axes that don’t start at zero they don’t tell the whole picture. Zoom in on a significant portion of the results making the incline of the line on the graph steeper or shallower according to the data included. How you frame the graph makes a difference in the perception of the same data. 58:08 – Semi attached figure is when you say one thing and imply another. You can’t say something cures colds but you can say it kills 300k germs in 11 seconds in a test tube. This data then lets people make up their own minds and infer an incorrect conclusion. Cigarettes statistics and the preferred brand of physicians. The statistic doesn’t tell you anything. Weather and the number of accidents. Even though fog is more dangerous there will always be more accidents in clear weather because there is more clear weather days than foggy days. Trying to compare 2 stocks by share price is a common mistake. 01:02:08 – Statistics used for catchy headlines and for their shock value. Accidents in the home are more common – makes you feel like it’s more dangerous. True of anywhere that you spend the most time. You can represent the same data in many different ways so it sounds completely different. 01:04:38 – Correlation vs causation. Smoking vs low grades. Easy to infer that one causes the other but it could be the opposite or other lifestyle factors. People who eat McDonalds vs heart disease and correlating that to eating meat. Beer bellies and the correlation to poor health. Often combined factors including environment and other common habits associated to beer drinking. 01:08:40 – Changing attitudes to college. Myth of college equaling success. Negates the other factors of how you got to college that contributes to your success. You don’t get to see alternative histories. College popularity is dropping, poor choice of investment. 01:11:01 – How to talk to a statistic, questions to ask to understand the data you are being presented with. Who Says So? Who is telling you this information and what is their bias or agenda. When presented with impossible statistics think how did they get that data? Look at the demographics of academic psychological studies – most participants are college students. Think about if studies can be replicated. 01:15:29 – How Does He Know? Look out for evidence of a biased sample or a sample that has been improperly selected. Is the sample big enough to give a reliable conclusion. 01:15:44 – What Were their methods? Does it make sense that people could actually know this information? Cancer diagnosis and changing rates. Survival seems longer as we are detecting it earlier, doesn’t actually mean the treatments have an impact. Also people are living longer to become more susceptible to cancer. And a growth in population so naturally numbers will rise. 01:17:25 – What’s Missing? Looking at raw data can give you a true picture. Johns Hopkins and female students. Look at startup growth, how they measure it. Percentages don’t tell you if they have 100 users or 10k users. Raw percentages are misleading. This also happens with diversity, gender. Expecting women to be exactly 50% of elected representatives. However that doesn’t account for the application pool and what happens when you reach that 50%. Do you limit diversity? Male vs Female leadership in Wall Street Organizations. Sexism. Dichotomy creates oppression. When you try to balance you create an alternative discrimination. 01:23:10 – Did somebody change the subject? The reasons for collecting data often skew the results. Do people want to be counted, are people incentivized to give a truthful answer? China example, different census record, one for military and tax reasons the second for famine relief. 01:24:27 – Does it make sense? If you hear a statistic that doesn’t seem plausible or too incredible it’s usually a good sign to be skeptical. 01:25:08 – Bonus material, sphinx conspiracy theories, join the patreon to access it. Overall a good book, quick read, quite entertaining and funny. Super useful. Internalize the questions and use them against outlandish statistics. Look for multiple examples to prove something is good or bad. People often take one or two experiences and extrapolate that to mean always. 01:31:54 – If you want to know everything that's coming up on the show, get access to that on our Patreon. This week's episode is very special as the Creeps celebrate their 2 year anniversary! Can you believe it? Two whole years of three best buds sitting around and civilly discussing all the injustices of the world and how to best correct them. What? We're the ones who make dick jokes? Well, you say potato and I say potato and there's actually no good way to transcribe that. Anyway, unlike last year where we drank ourselves silly, this year we make our selves some chocolate milk like toddlers and answer some of your listener-submitted questions! Reporter Brian Bethel's harrowing encounter with Black Eyed Kids in a movie theater parking lot brought the phenomenon to the Internet and global attention: "Both boys stared at me with coal-black eyes. The sort of eyes one sees these days on aliens or bargain-basement vampires on late night television. Soulless orbs like two great swathes of starless night." What WERE these things? Where did they come from? What was their intent? Brian and his tale recently appeared on the BADLANDS episode of Destination America's MONSTERS AND MYSTERIES IN AMERICA.Jason Offutt has written extensively about Black Eyed Kidsencounters: "The children approach quietly, yet forcefully. They insist on coming inside your house to use the telephone or to get a drink of water. For some reason these children frighten you, and as your hand reaches up to open the door you see why. Their eyes are black. No iris, no whites, just an empty, soulless void."His books include “Paranormal Missouri,” “What Lurks Beyond,” “Darkness Walks: Shadow People Among us,” “Haunted Missouri,” “On Being Dad;” the upcoming “Through a Corn-Swept Land” “The Dead Earth.” Jason's work on the paranormal can be seen at from-the-shadows.blogspot.com, and mysteriousuniverse.org. He lives with his family in Northwest Missouri where he teaches college journalism, and keeps humanity safe from the forces of evil.

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom 10:9). This is how a person can be saved—by confessing that Jesus is Lord, and believing that God raised him from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus is so vital to our Christian faith. Without it, our faith is meaningless and futile. So, we Christians are all supposed to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead and is still alive today. But are we really believing that? First, we need to realize that among the Christians at Corinth there were those who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. Paul says: But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead (1 Cor 15:12)? What? Were these people really Christians? I know what you mean. Being a Christian means believing in the resurrection. But if you asked them, “Are you a Christian?”, they would probably say, “Yes, I am.” They all believed in Jesus all right. Think about Jesus’ disciples. When did they believe that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God—before or after the death and resurrection of Jesus? Well, at least, Peter did believe so and confessed it already in chapter 16 of Matthew. Then, did he believe in the resurrection of Jesus that time? The Bible tells that Jesus spoke about his death and resurrection many times, but none of the disciples believed that. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you (Mat 16:21-22)!" This proves that a person can believe in Jesus without really believing in the reality of his resurrection. Pay attention to how the disciples were on the day Jesus was raised from the dead. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you (John 20:19)!" Why did the disciples lock themselves in a dark room? Because they were afraid of the Jews. But why were they afraid of the Jews? Because they killed Jesus. What? Didn’t they know that God raised him from the dead? I guess not. They did not believe even though some women went and told them that they saw Jesus on that day. So many of us are in the same situation like these disciples who believed Jesus was the Messiah, but knew only that Jesus died, and did not believe in the reality of his resurrection. They live still in darkness with fear and the sense of guilt and failure. Death is still reigning over them while it has been already swallowed up in victory. It does not make sense, doesn’t it?
What? We're on time? That's new. Our buddy that we keep down the well escaped this week, so we have Frank as a temporary replacement. The news is filled with good comments from users, except those dudes who think 30 frames per second equates to being slow as hell. Tina's thrilled about Stephen Hawking comments, Sam likes the PSP Go, and Sharkey asks us all to buy indie games for a good cause. And then we finish off with our call-in questions.
