Gather round, children, for the story of one of the coolest ladies in literary history.   Zora Neale Hurston was born with a thirst for adventure and the confidence to conquer the world, even though at the start of the 1900s, to be both black and a woman seemed a formidable barrier to overcome.   But it didn't take long for her to make her mark on the world as both a writer during the Harlem Renaissance (her most popular novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God), and an anthropologist, studying hoodoo and conjure all over the southern United States and the West Indies.   In fact, her life is so full of drama and adventure that this episode quickly turned into a two parter, so enjoy part one where Hannah and Tyler talk about Hurston's early years (including a parent who might go down in BL&L infamy), her entrance on the writing scene, and initial anthropology expeditions. I'll stand by these claims until sense is made of them or I die. I really saw a shadowy figure in the road one night, I really saw a crouched figure among the trees though only once, and I really did hear voices everytime I took a walk. If Mary Shelley's life were a book, you'd put it down because it sounds too dramatic and tragic to be believable. By her mid-20s, the creator of "Frankenstein" had run off with a poet, been disowned by her family, lost four children, published a literary masterpiece, and been widowed. Robert Jordan — How the Wheel of Time Creator Became an Icon of the Fantasy Genre James Oliver Rigney Jr. (better known by his pen name Robert Jordan) is best known for his breakout fantasy series "The Wheel of Time," which breathed new life into a genre that had grown somewhat stale since Tolkien took the scene by storm decades earlier. But before he wrote the several million words that would become his legacy, Rigney/Jordan served in Vietnam, became a nuclear engineer, and had a near-death experience that inspired him to finally pick up a pen. AND he was a good husband and human, y'all, which Tyler and Hannah were very excited to learn. Longtime listeners know we don't get to feature a lot of healthy relationships on this show, but you'll be delighted to hear about Rigney/Jordan's marriage to Harriet McDougal a woman who was, incidentally, also a huge part of shaping the "Wheel of Time" series. Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) is one of Russia's most acclaimed writers. His most famous novels include Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov. Although Dostoevsky created many works that were celebrated even within his lifetime, his life was anything but easy. He became orphaned as a teenager, was exiled to Siberia for reading banned materials, and struggled with disastrous spending habits that nearly lost him a decade of his work. Tyler is still on hiatus so Hannah sits down with a different Tyler. Tyler Francke is a journalist and co-owner and founder of Now Hear This Media. Now, we had added Dostoevsky to the episode lineup way back in the winter. Then, just as Hannah was picking up her biography (The Sinner and the Saint: Dostoevsky and the Gentleman Murderer Who Inspired a Masterpiece by Kevin Birmingham) to start research for the episode, Vladimir Putin's army invaded Ukraine. If you're not up to date on the current situation in Eastern Europe, Hannah's coworkers are doing fantastic on the ground reporting on the war, its horrific toll, and the Ukrainian people's fierce resistance. Francke and Hannah talked briefly about postponing the episode for a time when Russia wasn't such a hot topic, but ultimately decided that they didn't want to punish Dostoevsky, a writer who was almost executed for standing up to a corrupt regime in his own lifetime, for the current Russian dictator's sins. The pair also discuss the many ways in which the Russia of today still resembles the Russia of Dostoevsky's time. The episode has plenty of laughs too: Hannah can't pronounce "Moscow" (but has a valid excuse!), Dostoevsky makes a bad business deal, and Francke's Kenny Rogers joke goes way over Hannah's head.   Thank you to Jake Bassen for our theme song: https://soundcloud.com/jakebassen   As well as Cam Clawson, for our Correspondence Remix: https://soundcloud.com/camclawson7   Follow us on Instagram: @lewisandlovecraft @twclawson_pdx @thehannahray @canbycurrent   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LewisandLovecraft/   Website: https://lewislovecraft.weebly.com/   Email: lewisandlovecraft@gmail.com

Both women started their writing career by imagining alternate storylines for existing characters – or in Todd's case, Harry Styles of the British pop-group One Direction. They self-published online and then, after literary bigwigs saw their enormous success, revamped their stories through traditional publishers, raking in millions of dollars and snagging movie deals on top of it.   Tyler read nothing for this episode, his least amount of preparation yet, though he still managed to chime in with some insight.
