Get your “love is love” tees washed because it's Mardi gras season baby! Ok don't get us twisted, we think Mardi Gra is SLAY, but sometimes it can be a little morally tricky for the queers as they navigate "Getting that bag" whilst having our experiences capitalised for financial gain. Usually for not a lot in return. Look, there is nothing wrong (in fact a lot right) with big corporations putting money behind community but what happens when it isn't reflected all year round? What happens when the safes they are created aren't so safe? Are we just getting got as queers? … Well, let's talk about it! Today's conversation is light but has depth and hopefully makes you feel a little less alone in the world. Todays conversation is a soft one. With 77% of adults consuming Alcohol weekly it has become so normalised in our society many of us don't even know why we drink, we just do. For many, drinking begins in adolescence as a means to assert your independence and cool factor to other peers. As an adult alcohol is a way to socialise with other adults. A lot of drinking culture is centred around connecting. What if you didn't drink alcohol but remained just as connected. Kath has been sober since the age of 18 and has seen this journey through many forms. Kath sits down to have a light, fun and helpful conversation about navigating your way through a world that is so alcohol obsessed when you have decided that maybe drinking isn't for you. Wether it be forever or just for a moment in time. To help have this conversation they are joined by dear friend Tommy Misa. Tommy is an actor, writer and advocate. With their work often focused on the intersections of lived experience and with common themes of race, class, mental health, addiction and queerness, often using humour as an approach. Todays conversation is a silly one, because silly conversations are just as important as the hard ones! Getting serious about the silly things is what makes the harder stuff easier to digest. Kath is Joined for a Friday knockoff drink gossip session by stylist, creative director and Gemini, Poppy Zanderigo - aka Ppusspuss on the internet. Todays conversation is soft but one I think we need to casually have more often. It's important to celebrate all the ways in which people come to their sexual identity. Many of us figure out our queerness in those early stages of development - maybe childhood or during adolescence. But, what if your path to queerness came to you as a surprise? Sometimes the conversation can lead to possible pressure for people to just know and know young and never change. As Kath sat through many casual conversations at the gay bar about this, with those in community that feel like their journey isn't valid because the struggle wasn't there, they thought it would be helpful to have a candid chat about it publicly. Because some people don't know they are queer until they find themselves randomly attracted to someone of the same gender and that is okay. Kath is joined by their long time pal and later in life come outer Katie Williams for this conversation. Katie is a podcaster, content creator and ex sprinter. They chat exploring sexuality, relationship wisdom and gay sex nerves. Show notes: Find Katie: @katiewilliams Find Katies podcast: @ Better for it - wherever you get your podcasts! TW: Trans deaths/suicide/mental health Today conversation is an important one. With trans youth having some of the highest rates of suicide, it's time we had a conversation about why positive visibility, education and representation is so important for our communities survival. To make this conversation a little more soft we are joined by one of my best friends and chosen family members Sandy Mcintyre. Sandy, as well as being an enby icon is an Actor, Model, Writer, Producer and founder of Queerful - a space to tell queer stories, share queer experiences and educate not only those within the community but those who are cis, heterosexual and may have some questions unanswered. In this chat we highlight a channel 7 spotlight piece about de-transitioning and how media representation such as can profoundly negatively affect the lives of queer people, especially our queer youth. Today is one of those powerful conversations that's community driven. It encompasses the theme of this show as our guest's movement for big change all started with a conversation. Kath sits down with Chanel Contos to chat about ending rape culture to help women, men and queer people end the cycle of assault from both sides. Chanel is an activist, educator, young Australian of the year nominee and now author of her new book “Consent Laid Bare” - a book that challenges the lingering inequality that reinforces rape culture and asks boys and men to become advocates for sex centered around intimacy rather than fuelled by aggression. Back in 2021 Channel was speaking to her friends about their experiences of sexual assault during high school. This prompted channel to take to instagram and ask other women about their own stories of sexual assault. The response snowballed and soon after she had a movement backed by many and an online petition to make consent education mandatory in Australian schools. It attracted 45,000 signatures. T/W on this episode: Sexual violence.
Today is a hard but incredibly important conversation. With a date finally set for the Voice to parliament referendum it is time we talk about why allies should be voting yes on October 14th. Kath sits down with Teela Reid, a proud Wiradjuri woman, self proclaimed rebellious lawyer, and campaigner for the Uluru Statement from the Heart to chat about how this referendum came to be, the importance of it, what it will do for Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people, and how allies need to step up, not just now but always in the face of racism.
