On Inclusivity and Risk with Chris Reilly of Link, The LGBTQ+ Insurance Network

RIMScast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2025 30:33

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   Justin interviews Chris Reilly about his insurance career and how you came to join and lead Link USA. They also cover RISKWORLD 2025 and the DE&I Studio, where Chris was on a panel. Chris talks about how he volunteered for the DE&I initiative at Amwins and how it has grown over the years. Chris does not believe the current anti-DE&I rhetoric will continue for long, in light of the existing Title VII and EEOC protecting employees and applicants against employment discrimination. Chris believes organizations know what is right, and that they will do better with a strong DE&I program in place, reducing reliance on EPLI coverage. The conversation concludes with information about Link USA's upcoming events.   Listen to learn more about supporting Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts in your organization.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS and RIMScast. [:17] About this episode of RIMScast. Our topic is inclusivity in risk management and we will be joined by Chris Reilly, the National Co-Chair of Link USA, and Senior Vice President and National Practice Leader at Amwins Group Benefits. [:45] RIMS-CRMP Workshops! Register by July 1st for the next RIMS-CRMP Virtual Workshop, which will be co-led by Parima. That course will be held on July 8th and 9th. Links to these courses can be found on the Certification Page of RIMS.org and through this episode's show notes. [1:20] RIMS Virtual Workshops! On June 26th. Pat Saporito will return to present the very popular new course, “Generative AI for Risk Management”. [1:32] A link to the full schedule of virtual workshops can be found on the RIMS.org/education and RIMS.org/education/online-learning pages. A link is also in this episode's notes. [1:43] Starting on July 16th, James Lam will host a six-module course, the RIMS-CRO Certificate in Advanced Enterprise Risk Management. This is a bi-weekly course that will run through Wednesday, September 24th. A link to last week's episode about it is in this episode's notes. [2:04] Registration closes on July 9th. A link is in this episode's notes. [2:09] Mark your calendars for November 17th and 18th for the RIMS ERM Conference 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The agenda is being built. Soon, we will distribute a Call for Nominations for the ERM Award of Distinction. I'll update this episode's show notes when that link is ready. [2:32] Think about your organization's ERM program or one that you know of, and how it has generated value. We will have more on that in the coming weeks. [2:40] On with the show! It's June 2025. It is Pride Month and RIMScast and RIMS are dedicated to fostering an environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel valued, respected, and empowered. We'll dive into the real meanings of words and initiatives; words like inclusivity. [3:01] Joining me today to delve into those terms is Chris Reilly, the National Co-Chair of Link USA. Link is the LGBTQ+ Insurance Network. Chris is also the Senior Vice President and National Practice Leader at Amwins's Group Benefits. [3:17] We will discuss the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in insurance and risk management, how the pendulum has swung, and what risk professionals and employers need to know about a landscape that may or may not be changing as much as you think. [3:35] Interview! Chris Reilly, welcome to RIMScast! [3:42] It's Pride Month. For Chris, it's a great time to be celebrating oneself and celebrating with the community. He says there's no reason not to celebrate 12 months of the year. [4:14] Chris Reilly has had a 30-plus-year insurance career. His dad and grandfather had an agency. His father offered him a job right out of college. Chris thought he'd step up in a year or two, but he's still doing it 30-plus years later. It's a great career. He loves the industry. [4:47] The first part of Chris's years he spent in the Property and Casualty world as a commercial broker, most of those years with Aon. He jumped to the wholesale side when he joined Amwins in 2000. [5:05] Chris is on the employee benefits side, providing group benefit programs to companies through broker partners. [5:13] About five or six years ago, Amwins created internal DEI programs. Chris immediately volunteered to join the National Council at Amwins to participate in and help build those programs. He worked on a committee centered on making the workplace intentionally inclusive. [5:54] Chris served on that committee for two years. In the process, he came across Link, which was in the UK. Chris and a colleague convinced Link to bring it to the U.S., which they did in 2021. Four years later, Link has expanded into Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Atlanta.  [6:18] Link restructured this year with a national board for a national presence. Link kicked off Pride Month with a national virtual event. It had a great turnout. Chris is excited to continue to lead Link and help support the LGBTQ+ community and its allies in the insurance industry. [7:04] Chris notes that the insurance industry is still known to be a very conservative industry but from 30 years ago to today, there has been a big difference in inclusivity. There's constant evolution and change. We can always continue to do things better. [7:23] Chis says everybody is striving to do things better. That's why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs became so important for all industries. Justin says that saying the words Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion instead of DEI provokes thought about their meaning and impact. [8:21] Chris agrees; when we say with intention, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with intention, it's just better. Don't we all want to be included? Inclusion is an endearing word. Let's all come to the table. We need to be more intentional about the words. [9:19] Chris Reilly attended RISKWORLD 2025 for the first time and was at the DE&I Studio. There were speakers and panels. Chris represented Link USA to talk about who they are, what they do, and their mission for the LGBTQ+ community in the insurance industry. [10:21] Chris served on a panel where Link, the National African American Insurance Association, the Asian American Insurance Network, the Latin American Insurance Agency Networks, and the Association of Professional Insurance Women were represented. [10:43] The organizations work to make sure the insurance industry continues to be a diverse, inclusive, and equitable industry. They support each other and continue to press the message of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. They raise their voices for the common good of every employee. [11:17] Leaders from all of those organizations have been guests on RIMScast, with Chris Reilly and Link being the fifth organization represented. If more organizations are created, Justin will include them on the show.  [11:37] Chris brings decades of experience in the trenches to his role on Link.  [12:02] Justin says we're hearing a lot of anti-DEI rhetoric. Chris says a lot of it is noise. People are throwing things against the wall to see what sticks. In most C-Suites, smart leaders seek legal advice. If they haven't been doing anything illegal, there isn't much they need to change. [13:01] Companies that feed into the noise end up hurting their employees which can hurt their bottom line in the long term. [13:27] Companies need to cut through the noise and make sure that they know what's true and what's not true. They need to focus on continuing to do what they've been doing that has been working. [13:55] Chris thinks that a company scaling back its DEI initiative hurts its reputation. When they scale back, the employees feel it first. If employees don't feel good in the workplace about the culture that has been developed for employees, that impacts the work and the output. [14:34] Eventually, that can hit outside the walls of the insurance company. Insurance isn't a direct-to-consumer product so this industry doesn't get impacted in quite the same way as a retail store. [15:06] Plug Time! Visit RIMSWesternRegional.com and register today. [16:31] Let's Return to Our Interview with Chris Reilly of Link!  [16:50] There's no such thing as illegal DE&I! There is no legal framework about whether a company does DE&I or not. Companies decided that having a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce was good for business. [17:30] There have been studies that show that when a company has a strong DE&I policy, it outperforms its competitors that don't by nearly 20%. Teams that are more diverse and inclusive outperform homogeneous groups by nearly 80%. [17:57] When you have a diversity of people; when you include people of different backgrounds in thought and education, you get more diverse thoughts and you can create better outcomes as a result. [18:15] This concept of illegal DE&I is thrown up there to create confusion and get people worrying about what they're doing. [18:51] Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) is what companies would buy if they have a sexual harassment suit, a discrimination suit, or a wrongful termination suit. Employers take this coverage to protect themselves from that. [19:25] Whether they have EPLI coverage or not, before the term “illegal DE&I,” nobody was concerned about it. They all felt that they had the proper policies and best practices in place to prevent employment practices claims. [19:43] If there were this rash of claims suddenly happening, maybe it's not “illegal DE&I” but you're not doing it right. Fix the problem so that it doesn't become an issue. [19:59] What companies are seeing is that their policies and best practices have been working, so there's not a problem. If companies start believing that they shouldn't have DE&I programs, that will embolden individuals to be bigots, racists, harassers, and bullies at work. [20:25] If that happens, you will get employment practices claims. [20:30] Justin feels that we are seeing uninclusive and bullying expressions more now on social media than when he was hired at RIMS eight years ago. [20:36] Chris thinks that the world has changed and the narrative has changed and people feel like they're emboldened to bring out those negative personality traits in themselves for some reason. [20:50] Chris recently talked to a company where the CEO addressed the employees, to tell them that bigotry, harassment, and hatred have no place, and will have no place in the company. [21:16] He told them the company was built with a culture that respects everybody, that is about fairness and integrity, working together, and creating inclusive and collaborative teams, to create the best outcomes they can for the company and its consumers. [21:32] He said they are going to keep doing what they're doing because everything's going just fine. He said if we start trying to tinker with the DE&I programs, that will inevitably create problems and deteriorate the great work that you have been doing. [21:53] What's the ROI on DE&I? It's hard to quantify. When your employees are happy, they're doing good work, they're being productive, and the company is successful, that comes in part from the investment of time, energy, and money put into Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion programs. [22:08] You can try to tie ROI to some of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs when you talk about EPLI, Directors & Officers, and E&O insurance. If you don't have good practices, what you will have is employment practices liability claims around discrimination and harassment.  [23:01] HR will have to deal with the HR issues of employees, potentially defending a lawsuit. If they don't have these coverages in place, those defence costs can get expensive. You might have to settle a suit, which can cost more money. It's a ripple effect. [23:27] With more claims, the premiums of these policies will go up. So, if you're not following best practices and have to start paying out claims and higher premiums to defend yourself against these claims, those are financial factors to consider in the ROI of doing the right thing. [23:51] Plug Time! Let me tell you about the Spencer Educational Foundation. Spencer's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved, in part, by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [24:31] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in General Grants to support over 130 student-centred experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. Spencer's 2026 application process is now open through July 30th, 2025. [24:31] General Grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. [24:35] Spencer's Risk Manager on Campus Program offers grants of up to $5,000 to universities and colleges in the United States and Canada to host a practicing risk manager on their campus for a one-to-three-day residency. [24:49] The Risk Manager on Campus program has been praised by both universities and risk managers as a rewarding educational experience for students and a chance to give back to the profession. The application deadline for 2026 is June 30th, 2025. Check the link in the notes. [25:08] Visit SpencerEd.org for more information. [25:12] Let's Return to the Conclusion of My Interview with Chris Reilly! [25:34] The pendulum has swung one way. Chris thinks that it will swing back as smarter and calmer minds prevail, in the end. Organization leaders know what's right and wrong. Once the noise calms down, people will realize that we already have things in place to protect everybody. [26:14] We already have Title VII and the EEOC in place. I have told people that with all that's being said, no laws have changed. Title VII is in place and the EEOC is still there to enforce it. If there were crazy problems with this, Title VII and the EEOC would already be addressing it. [26:44] Chris believes the pendulum will swing back to the center sooner rather than later. Executive orders and attempting to change laws are not going to sit well. There are already protections in place to prohibit employment discrimination. [27:13]  Chris is the National Chair of Link USA. A couple of days after this episode, there will be the New York City Link-Up Networking Happy Hour, Pride Edition. That's going to be in Manhattan on the Avenue. [27:33] On June 26th, in Los Angeles, there will be a Pride Movie Night and Networking Mixer at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Chris says these events are always fun. Link tries to create personal connections between the LGBTQ+ Community and its allies. [28:04] We're all doing the same thing, feeling the same pressures, working in the insurance industry, and wanting connection. Some people work at companies that may not have anybody else like them in their firm. They're looking for connections within the LGBTQ+ community. [28:28] Link is heavily supported by its allies. They couldn't fight the fight without the allies. The events are about bringing people together in a fun way and ultimately, networking in the industry. People connect and build business relationships and develop businesses, as well. [28:55] We've got a link to Link in this episode's notes. [28:58] Chris, it's been a real pleasure to speak with you. I'm glad we're having this dialogue. I hope to see you at RISKWORLD 2026 and the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Studio. [29:21] Special thanks again to Chris Reilly of Link, the LGBTQ+ Insurance Network. Links to the events that we mentioned and to Link's website are in this episode's show notes. [2:00] A link to the full schedule of virtual workshops can be found on the RIMS.org/education and RIMS.org/education/online-learning pages. A link is also in this episode's show notes. [2:12] Mark your calendars for November 17th and 18th for the RIMS ERM Conference 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The agenda is being built. Soon, we will distribute a Call for Nominations for the ERM Award of Distinction. I'll update this episode's show notes when that link is ready. [2:35] Think about your organization's ERM program or one that you know of, and how it has generated value. We will have more on that in the coming weeks. [2:43] On with the show! Our guest today is a risk management trailblazer who is widely considered the world's first Chief Risk Officer. I'm talking about James Lam. [2:54] Starting on July 16th, James will host a six-module course for RIMS, The RIMS-CRO Certificate in Advanced Enterprise Risk Management. It's a bi-weekly course that will run through Wednesday, September 24th. Registration closes on July 9th. [3:14] James is here to discuss and share his ERM philosophies, how the practice has changed in the past five years since he was last on the show, and to give us a preview of what the upcoming course will be like and how it could boost your risk career. [3:31] Interview! James Lam, welcome back to RIMScast! [3:37] James was a guest on RIMScast in the Fall of 2020. We've gone through a lot in the last five years! We've lived through a pandemic, and companies realized the importance of operational resilience and strategic risk management. [4:14] James says today we are facing unprecedented geopolitical risk. We are also facing AI risks and opportunities. Some Chief Risk Officers have stayed relevant and elevated their careers and skills, while others have failed in their organization's ERM programs. [5:01] James tells what may cause a CRO to fail. Applying a “check the box” approach or a compliance approach, without staying relevant with the evolving risk landscape. [5:29] Speaking of successful CROs, James said one CRO he worked with went from being a treasurer reporting to the CFO, to becoming the CRO, then the CFO, and eventually the CEO, all within eight years. [5:58] He and other successful CROs had learned how to add strategic value and be relevant to key decision-makers at the board level and the executive level. [6:15] A key competence is applying risk analytics to quantify and minimize unexpected earnings, helping companies maintain sustainable, predictable profitability. [6:40] Then, evolving that to understanding capital management to optimize capital allocation, dividend policies, and risk transfer strategies, ultimately, applying the same risk analytics to support corporate and business decisions. [7:05] Being able to add strategic value is the most important competence for a Chief Risk Officer today. [7:26] Management and corporate directors are concerned about the unexpected. As CROs, how do we connect our work with things that are the most meaningful to the decision-makers and key internal stakeholders? All boards, CEOs, and CFOs are concerned about earnings. [7:53] Unexpected earnings variance and guidance are things that they are concerned about. CROs can help them with predictable profitability, long-term capital management, and value creation. [8:10] How does a CRO support the leaders' decision-making at the corporate level, where there's M&A or new products, and at the business level, in terms of risk-based pricing and risk transfer decisions? [8:43] James thinks the risk appetite framework is one of the most important processes and capabilities for advanced enterprise risk management. [9:01] Frameworks that don't do well tend to be mostly or entirely qualitative. They tend to be static, maybe updated once a year, with very little change. [9:15] The frameworks that are more strategic and add more value to companies tend to be a combination of quantitative and qualitative. [9:42] Successful risk appetite frameworks also consider risk capacity in terms of capital resources, earnings, and liquidity, relative to our risk management capability and track record. [10:01] Successful risk appetite frameworks look at opportunities. What is the opportunity for profitability, growth, and innovation, relative to risk? If the opportunity is high, then we should be willing to take on more risk. [10:19] Successful risk appetite frameworks tend to be more dynamic in a way that allows the company to reduce risk when it is appropriate but also to take more risk when it is appropriate. [10:31] James says a good risk appetite framework would guide organizations to take more risk, on a selective basis. [10:57] James uses E*Trade as a case study. James was on the board of E*Trade and chaired its risk committee. This case study is in the RIMS CRO Certificate Program in Advanced Enterprise Risk Management. [11:28] James will invite E*Trade's CRO, the head of ERM, and one of the regulators, to provide first-hand experiences and lessons learned. [11:41] James gives examples of how ERM improved E*Trade's business outcomes and profitability. Based on a robust risk appetite framework, E*Trade thought it needed to take more risk in new product innovation and shorten the time to market dramatically. [12:21] Because of that, E*Trade was the first company to offer retail investors the capability to trade stocks and mutual funds on their Apple Watch. It was a very important business opportunity as the Apple Watch was hugely popular. [12:49] This tied into E*Trade's founding as the first internet company to allow retail investors to trade on the internet. It was a proud moment for E*Trade. It shows how a robust ERM program and risk appetite framework can support innovation and business growth. [13:16] In the eight years James was on E*Trade's board until it was sold, its stock went from $8 to $59 a share. It went from B to BBB, from losing money to making money, and from a weak capital position to buying back over $1 billion in stock and offering its first-ever dividend. [13:52] In addition to the E*Trade case study, the course will look into other case studies, good and bad. We will learn from organizations that didn't manage risks effectively and what we could learn from them to prevent that for our organizations. [14:13] We will learn from best-practice companies in the energy and healthcare space. [14:30] Plug Time! The very first RIMS Texas Regional Conference will be held from August 4th through the 6th in San Antonio at the Henry B. González Convention Center. Public Registration is open here. [15:42] Let's Return to My Interview with James Lam!  [16:00] Starting on July 16th, there will be a new course that James is leading. It's the RIMS CRO Certificate Program in Advanced Enterprise Risk Management. If you're listening to this on the week of publication, you've got about a month to register. Registration closes on July 9th. [16:22] James is one of our favorite collaborators! [16:27] James tells what led to the launch of this program. He's very excited to be partnering with RIMS! His motivation for doing this program is that he has worked in risk management for over 40 years. He has been a management consultant working with over 100 companies. [17:10] James has been an eight-time board member, chairing the risk committee, chairing the audit committee, and overseeing risk management, not day-to-day but from a board perspective. [17:22] What James wants to do in this program is to share the lessons he has learned and some of the best practices in a very practical way. He also wants to invite other risk experts to share from their different domains. James has had this idea for over three years. [17:56] He met with the RIMS board members and the Professional Development Team to talk about this. They got an agreement in place, and within a few weeks, they got the outline and the website up. James tells of the team that helped him put it together in bi-weekly meetings. [18:31] The program came together within weeks. The early registrations are above expectations. The market reception has been strong. James says this course will provide an amazing learning experience for the participants. [18:54] It's a six-module, bi-weekly course with four-hour live virtual sessions, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time, starting July 16th and running through September 24th. There will also be self-study with James's book, other articles, and research papers. [19:24] We've got the link in this episode's show notes. A brief description of each of the six modules is on the website. Module 4 is The Role of the Chief Risk Officer and Risk Appetite Statement. That's the James Lam wheelhouse! [19:44] The CRO, the risk appetite statement, and ERM will be critical topics. Other important topics are the role of the board, how risk professionals should not only serve the board but also leverage the board, and strategic decision-making. [20:13] Before the pandemic, teaching virtually was not James's favorite method. He enjoys interacting with participants. Since the pandemic, we've all learned how to learn and to teach in a virtual environment. James says we can make it dynamic and interactive, with a lot of sharing.  [22:53] James thinks they will get into individualized problem-solving. Participants can highlight challenges or opportunities they're facing. Collectively, the group will help with individualized problem-solving. [21:12] James will bring in guest speakers. He has a strong network of excellent board directors and experts with backgrounds in AI, cybersecurity, and ERM. These include former or current CROs with stories to share. He believes all that will make the program relevant and dynamic. [21:45] Plug Time! Let me tell you about the Spencer Educational Foundation. Spencer's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved, in part, by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [22:05] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in General Grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. Spencer's 2026 application process is now open through July 30th, 2025. [22:27] General Grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. Learn more about Spencer's General Grants through the Programs tab of SpencerEd.org. Be sure to check out Spencer's Monthly Virtual Campus.  [22:41] On Thursday, June 12th, we will have Reinsurance 101, hosted by Lee Vuu, Founder and President of the MRIA. A link is in this episode's show notes. Register today! [22:53] Let's Conclude Our Interview with James Lam! [23:22] James says the future is bright. AI and risk analytics are going to change our careers and our lives. In the next five years, we're going to see some interesting dynamics with AI and we're going to have some unintended consequences. There will be risks and opportunities. [23:54] For risk professionals, being able to help our organizations and address the risks, whether it's privacy, model risks such as hallucination, or data governance, all those are going to be in our wheelhouse, and we could add a lot of value.  [24:11] James thinks AI could create opportunities to enhance enterprise risk management by tapping into structured and unstructured data and help us minimize unexpected earnings variance, optimize capital structure, and support corporate and business-level decisions. [24:47] A basic question that any AI model asks is, “What would an expert do?” What would an expert driver do in terms of an autonomous car? What would an expert doctor do in this specific situation? In risk management, the senior risk professionals and CROs are the experts. [25:12] James says the CROs have an opportunity to design the training data that would train these AI agents. They would have an impact on training these AI agents directly in terms of being part of the feedback loop. [25:32] James is very excited about where ERM is going to be in the next three to five years. AI will become a very important tool. He doesn't think it will replace risk practitioners. [25:49] The expertise, judgment, governance, and perspective that risk practitioners bring to the table will be valuable. AI will be a huge enabler. [26:11] Looking forward 10 years, James asks, using AI, how do we help with scenario planning and scenario analysis? Regarding many of the emerging and disruptive risks that we face today, we don't have a lot of data or models, so scenario analysis is going to be a critical tool. [26:48] The ultimate level of enterprise risk management would be to create a digital twin of our organization's overall risk profile, including our strategic, financial, operational, compliance, and reputational risks, and run scenarios to stress-test that system with AI. That's not far off. [27:25] James, it has been such a pleasure to reconnect with you. I have a great feeling about the RIMS CRO Certificate Program in Advanced Enterprise Risk Management. Remember, everyone, you have until July 9th, 2025, to register. Virtual seats are filling up! Check out the link! [2:17] James will join us next week to discuss this program and his ERM philosophy. Check out the link in this episode's show notes and the Education page of RIMS.org. Register today before we reach virtual capacity! [2:33] On with the show! It's our first episode of June 2025. That means that it is National Safety Month here in the U.S. and also Tire Safety Month. I was delighted to book today's guest, John Baldwin, PhD. He is the Chief Product and Technical Officer of Discount Tire. [2:56] He developed a risk tool for Discount Tire called Treadwell. This is the company's personalized tire recommendation tool. [3:05] Treadwell utilizes extensive real-world testing data, including nearly a million tread depth measurements annually and evaluations of dozens of new tire models each year. [3:17] John is also a member of the Enterprise Risk Committee at Discount Tire, so we will also learn about his risk philosophies and his efforts to bolster sustainability when it comes to tires, tire manufacturing, and tire recycling. [3:33] Interview! John Baldwin, welcome to RIMScast! [3:52] John says risk management is like safety. You incorporate it in every decision you make. It's good to make it part of the daily oxygen. [4:10] John started consulting with Discount Tire in 2007 and became full-time in 2012. [4:25] John is a Senior Vice President and Chief Product and Technical Strategist. He's responsible for the fitment guide on the website. Discount Tire measures each vehicle it can and puts that in the fitment guide. [4:56] They consider product quality and performance. They test tires, wheels, and lug nuts, before offering them for sale. John's background is technical. [5:10] John is also in charge of sustainability and government affairs. [5:24] John has a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a PhD in polymer science, the study of plastics and rubber. He was at 3M for a lot of years working on filter media for filter masks, which had a resurgence 25 years after he left. [5:49] John went to automotive working in adhesives. He was hired by Ford. He was at Ford when the Ford Firestone recall happened. He got drafted onto the Root Cause Team, to find out what was going on with the tires because of his background. [6:08] John worked in advanced manufacturing on a cross-functional team. [6:22] John's advice to folks coming up in a company is “Saying No is career-limiting.” He had said No a lot, at the beginning of his career. When he started saying Yes, things changed. [6:38] Coming from the larger companies where he had worked, John says the vibe at family-owned Discount Tire is an entrepreneurial spirit. There's a lot less bureaucracy. You go talk to people to get things done. It's very comfortable for John. [6:58] John says Discount Tire is for everyone but the people who thrive here are more self-starting, think it out, and occasionally color outside the lines. It's nice. You learn a lot. [7:13] John has a small group of about 25 people. They are cohorts of the risk group. The risk group collects and manages thought processes and information. The people who own the risks have to take care of them. The risk group shares a framework for them to manage risks. [8:23] John is on the Enterprise Risk Committee. It's a group of the different functional areas, Technical Fitment, Real Estate, IT, Cybersecurity, Store Management, Product Quality, Legal, HR, and other areas from around the corporation represented. [8:52] The Enterprise Risk Committee is one level below the Steering Committee. They use a tool called Riskonnect. They analyze and bring the risks to the Steering Committee. Justin and John first connected through the last Riskonnect webinar! [9:46] There are technical issues in managing the stores, including customer safety. Customer safety is a founding philosophy at Discount Tire. Customer safety is the first consideration. [10:21] When John first came on board at Discount Tire, it was after the Firestone Tire recall and Discount Tire focused on tire quality. Everyone at Purchasing hated him for being “Dr. No.” He told them: Let's put a process together where we validate whom we're buying from. [10:51] He said, we validate the quality of the tires and wheels that we're buying and that frees you up. We could entertain buying from people we would never have entertained buying from because they meet our criteria. Suddenly, it goes from closing the box to expanding the box. [11:07] That's how we have to get people thinking. Once you have the process down, it unburdens you. It allows you to take more risks because you have a way of assessing what the risk is and doing something about it. [11:34] June is Tire Safety Month, promoted by the NHTSA. John is planning on a visit there next week. Tire Safety Month is an opportunity to engage and ask customers: Have you looked at your tires? Do you know what your air pressure is? Discount Tire does free air checks and fills. [12:20] One of the number one things for safety is making sure you have plenty of air in your tires. Most people don't think about it or check it. Talk with customers about tire tread depth and why there are treads. [12:54] Tire Safety Month is June because school is over and people will be taking road trips. Be aware of your tires. Check your air pressure and tread depth. The tread is essential for driving in rain or snow so you don't hydroplane and you can brake properly. Get your tires checked. [13:47] These things matter. There's a reason tires are designed the way they are. The public generally doesn't know. When John started working in tires he had no idea they came in different sizes. Everybody has a first day at work. [14:26] People generally don't change tires on their own, because you need a machine. [14:34] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! On June 5th, Zywave joins us to discuss “Today's Escalating Risk Trajectory: What's the Cause and What's the Solution?”. [16:04] Let's Return to Our Conversation with John Baldwin of Discount Tire!  [16:23] John points out mistakes in tire safety and maintenance. Are you overloading your vehicle? If you pull a trailer, are you loading the trailer correctly? Are you overdriving your abilities in bad weather? It's not about going fast, it's about stopping fast and being able to steer. [16:57] Be mindful of the conditions around you and how other people are driving. Most people tend to overestimate their abilities, especially if they're not in those conditions often. [17:19] Fleet safety is another topic. You have to pay attention to the details. [18:10] Discount Tire is a large purchaser of tires. Tire salesmen came in and boasted about their tires and downplayed their competition's tires. Discount Tire didn't have a basis for pushing back so they hired a driver and started testing the tires. They got warranty information. [18:39] A year after Discount Tire started testing tires for internal information, Chief Strategy Officer Dave Ginsberg, a data scientist, joined Discount Tire. He was thinking of an algorithm to help people pick tires. John told him of the data they gathered to help Discount Tire pick tires. [19:10] Both Discount Tire and the consumers have the same problem, what to buy. There's a lot out there. David put together the math behind Treadwell, and John's team generated the data. It's based on what you drive, where you drive, and how you drive, on city roads or a highway. [19:48] Not every car is a commuter. Some people just drive on the weekend. On different cars, different trim levels come with different tire sizes and wheel sizes. A key issue is what mileage you can expect. Discount Tire does free rotations. That gives them data on how long a tire lasts. [20:41] Discount Tire tests in winter and rain. They also test worn tires that they've buffed down to 4/32nds and test them in the wet. Tires are only new for the first couple thousand miles. Then various changes occur in how your tires perform over time. [21:11] So that's what we're trying to get at with people. We've changed a lot about how the tire industry's looking and talking about that, all for the customer, to relay to you how this is going to work over the life of your tire. [21:26] There are annual evaluations of over 75 new tire models each year. When Cooper was bought by Goodyear, the track Discount Tire was using for testing became redundant for Goodyear, so Discount Tire purchased it. They have a third-party test for them. [22:16] John tells tire manufacturers that Discount Tire uses Treadwell internally when talking about what tires to buy. It's the same version and data that consumers see. It's a unique tool. [22:58] There were some other sellers doing testing. Tire Rack was one of them. Discount Tire bought Tire Rack at the beginning of '22. They continue to do testing. Tire Rack is for the in-depth enthusiast. [24:08] Discount Tire is for the consumer who needs a tire but doesn't know a lot about tires, doesn't have a lot of time, and doesn't want to get ripped off. There's a lot of technical data. Discount Tire Treadwell quickly boils it down to suggest which tire the customer should buy. [24:18] Another point about Treadwell is that it has nothing to do with the cost of the tire or how much money Discount Tire makes from the sale. It's about the performance of the tire. It encourages the customer to look down the list for the diamond in the rough. It's a good tool. [24:49] The tire manufacturers have looked at the tool and said they want to win at Treadwell. It's impossible to do. The local weather affects the algorithm. Chances are, a good tire in Arizona is not a good tire in Minnesota because of the weather. Treadwell is objective. [25:31] Treadwell took two years to launch from conception. They had to get enough data from the stores in the field and enough testing to launch a small subset of tires. Now, they have almost every tire tested or it's on the list to get tested. When a new tire comes, they test it. [26:16] One of the things Discount Tire found is that it took some time after launch for the store managers to buy into using it with customers. They didn't understand it was a real tool. [26:40] In the last year or so, Discount Tire has started taking store managers through Treadwell to be tire evaluators for a day, testing at the track. They get a T-shirt, The Treadwell Experience. It has been game-changing. The tool has been embraced internally. [27:32] One of the store managers said Treadwell is like having a test track behind every store. [27:41] Plug Time! Spencer's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved, in part, by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [29:04] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in General Grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. Learn more about Spencer's General Grants through the Programs tab of SpencerEd.org. [29:35] Let's Return to the Conclusion of My Interview with Discount Tire's John Baldwin! [30:01] Discount Tire tests rolling resistance; how much fuel or energy per mile one tire absorbs, vs. another tire. Tires that roll easier don't take as much fuel. With battery vehicles, range is a big deal. Tire rolling resistance ranking for electric vehicles is incorporated into the algorithm. [30:47] If you have the same tire, size, construction, and everything, one on a gas vehicle and one on an electric vehicle, there is typically 10 to 15% faster wear on the battery vehicle because of the weight and a little bit of the torque. They factor the car in for the mileage estimation. [31:15] Noise becomes more of a consideration with electric vehicles because there's no engine noise. The whirring noise electric cars make is added so they're not completely silent. [31:49] Amazon made a big commitment to electric vehicles with Rivian. A lot of Uber drivers are starting to use Model 3 vehicles. There is a trend toward hybrid gas/electric vehicles. [32:41] Treadwell is testing off-road tires. If you take a truck out in the mud, you want a tire that works in the mud and rocks. Treadwell just expanded into testing winter tires. [33:27] Discount Tire is thinking about working with Tire Rack to rank summer tires and more. [33:52] John is on the Board of Directors of the Tire Recycling Foundation. The foundation is jointly put together through the United States Tire Manufacturing Association and also the Tire Industry Association, the retailers. [34:17] We need to find more recycling uses for tires. Twenty percent of scrap tires that come off today are landfilled. Thirty percent are burned in kilns. Fifteen percent are sold used. Used tires are not optimized for safety. [34:51] Is there a way to recycle these tires back into tires rubber-modified asphalt, or mats? There are so many other things you can do with tires besides burning them and burying them. [35:12] To go into asphalt, tires are ground up and then added to the mix. It's a different process, which when done right, provides a quieter surface with a better grip and it lasts longer. It's a good use of tires and would take care of the scrap tire problem. [35:37] Being in the Tire Recycling Foundation complements John's job at Discount Tire. How to recycle tires has been a problem in the U.S. tire industry for 100 years. [36:34] Municipalities sometimes have a Waste Date to drop off your hazardous waste. Instead of taking it there, you can bring it to a Discount Tire or a competitor. Then it will be recycled. [38:04] People can go to TireRecyclingFoundation.org for more information. It's a broad-based coalition. [38:59] John, it has been a real pleasure to speak with you. It's been illuminating. I'm glad that we're shining a lot on how important tires are to our daily lives and the supply chain. I don't know that we've ever done an episode devoted to tires! This is super cool for us at RIMS! [39:22] Special thanks again to John Baldwin of Discount Tire for joining us. In this episode of How to Build a Profitable Nutrition Business, Chris Hughes shares the unexpected story of the book he never wanted to write—and how that very book became one of the most powerful tools in his career as a dietitian and entrepreneur. Joining him is the woman who made it all happen: Natasa Denman, founder and CEO of Ultimate 48 Hour Author. Chris opens up about the imposter syndrome that almost kept him from writing a book, the resistance he felt going into the process, and how his wife Stacey quietly signed him up anyway. What followed was a career-defining experience that not only helped Chris extract the knowledge in his head but gave him the confidence to own his expertise, land speaking gigs, and ultimately grow and sell a successful business. Natasa breaks down her method for turning experts into authors—fast. Her system, developed for time-poor professionals, helps extract valuable knowledge and structure it into a book in just 48 hours. Together, they reflect on the behind-the-scenes moments, the power of publishing for credibility, and how the process can transform not just your business, but your identity as a leader. A CSP-accredited speaker and 15-time published author, Natasa Denman is the creator of the Ultimate 48 Hour Author system. Since launching her business in 2010, she has helped more than 950 solopreneurs across 15 countries become published authors. In 2018, she founded Ultimate World Publishing, supporting her authors as they go on to write second and third books. Featured in major Australian media including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Financial Review and The Age, Natasa now runs a multi 7-figure business from home with her husband and three children—having successfully pivoted her company online in 2020. Whether you're a nutritionist, dietitian, PT, or health coach, this episode is packed with inspiration, real talk, and practical advice for turning your expertise into something bigger. Writing a book isn't about being a bestseller—it's about becoming the next version of yourself and opening up doors you never knew existed. If this episode hits home for you, make sure to like, share and subscribe so more nutrition professionals can make a bigger impact doing what they love. In Episode 64, a special episode of the Virtual Velo Podcast, we're bringing you an inspiring conversation with Cody McKay, founder of Project Heart, and our very own Chris. Both are passionate cyclists with a unique perspective—overcoming life-altering cardiac challenges to return to and thrive in the endurance sport they love. Cody, a 33-year-old competitive cyclist from Ottawa, Canada, takes us through his journey from being diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm in 2021 to undergoing open-heart surgery in late 2022. Remarkably, he was back on the bike just six weeks later and racing competitively by May 2023. He shares how this transformative experience led him to establish Project Heart, a charity dedicated to raising awareness about heart health in the endurance athlete community. Chris shares his own cardiac journey, shedding light on the parallels and lessons learned in the seven months since undergoing a triple coronary bypass. Now a passionate advocate for heart health, Chris is using his platform to discuss the misconceptions athletes face about their fitness and health, the disconnect between the medical and endurance athlete community, and emphasizes the importance of screening tools like Coronary Artery Calcium Scans. This episode dives deep into the myths surrounding “Athlete's Heart Syndrome,” the dangers of assuming fitness equates to immunity from heart issues, and the life-saving significance of early detection and advocacy. Cody and Chris discuss the role of virtual cycling in the movement, including Project Heart events on Zwift and how listeners can get involved. Join us for an eye-opening conversation about heart health, resilience, and the power of community in endurance sports. Whether you're an avid cyclist or inspired by stories of overcoming challenges, this is an episode you can't miss! Follow this link to the Events Page to Support Project Heart on Zwift for Heart Health Awareness Month with weekly Group rides in February, every Sunday at 11 am EST (4 pm UTC)! We've been counting down the weeks until the November election - we're at three now, if you're counting with us. And with everything happening in the world right now, it can be hard to feel motivated about an election. But local wins and little victories are the best antidote to the sadness and helplessness we might feel when we're scrolling through our news feed. So this week we are so excited to talk to Jocelyn Benson, Michigan's Secretary of State and all-around amazing woman. She's a voting rights expert and has expanded access to voting across her state, overseeing the most secure and highest-turnout election in Michigan's history. Jocelyn also shares what she learned in her earlier work researching white supremacist organizations and chats about what a political race and a marathon have in common. It was a pleasure and an honor to have Secretary Benson on the pod. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to parents, a great community weekend, and Polish democracy in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Speaking of Michigan, next week we'll be joined by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to learn how we as voters can win back our rights. 42. Pole Dancing Part 2

Were the Wives able to tap into some sexy pole dancing energy?  Tune into Part 2 to find out! In the last 20 years, pole dancing has become a mainstream fitness phenomenon and an excellent way for women to get in touch with their femininity and sensuality. If you are curious about whether pole dancing might be a fun activity to explore, this episode is a must listen!   But first, the temps are up, so the drinks get nice and cold: the Strawberry Rum Slushie requires some freeze time so make it now and then tune into this episode's Hot Tale: Kat finally gets to play with the one that got away at the Dirty Disney party.  Then, the Wives ice their bruises while recapping their Intro to Pole sessions.  Finally, it's Just the Tips for anyone who wants to explore pole dancing. Pole dancing dates back to the 12th century in India and was originally practiced by mostly men, not women. It migrated over to the U.S. when exotic dancers from Egypt would perform as part of the traveling circus.  The sexual aspect of it was introduced when dancers would try to entice viewers to come see their shows by dancing erotically. It actually wasn't until the 1980s that pole dancing became synonymous with bars and strip clubs. Pole Dancing combines dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical pole.  This performance art form takes place not only in strip clubs as erotic dance, but also as a mainstream form of fitness. Amateur and professional pole dancing competitions are held in countries around the world. Pole dance requires significant muscular endurance and coordination, as well as sensuality.  Today, pole performances by exotic dancers range from basic spins and striptease in more intimate clubs to athletic moves such as climbs, flips and body inversions. Pole Dancing is mostly about upper body and core strength and proper instruction and training is necessary to prevent injuries. Since the mid-2000s, promoters of pole dance fitness competitions have tried to change peoples' perception of pole dance to include pole fitness as a non-sexual form of dance and acrobatics and are trying to move pole into the Olympics as pole sports. Recognized schools and qualifications are now commonplace. Pole dancing enthusiasts are of all ages, it's never too late to get started.   MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE The Monogamish Marriage  Average Swingers Casual Swingers Black and Kinky Podcast Swinger University 4ourPlay Podcast Bed Hoppers Life of Spice Coqueta Caliente TRAVEL WITH THE 2HOTWIVES Check out our EVENTS PAGE, for a chance to meet the 2HotWives in person, including: Desire Riviera Maya: August 2022 Bliss Cruise: November 2022 Keep checking back for new events.

Can the 2HotWives walk that middle path between polyamory and swinging?   Tune in to Swolly Part 2 to find out.  First, start with the episode's cocktail, the Blackberry Peach Fizz while Kat updates us on her sexy play time with a single guy.  If you dig a little upscale restraint play, this hot tale is for you.  Then, the Wives go deep on their journey toward Swolly.  Swolly is a form of ethical non-monogamy, where a couple is open to both polysexual and polyamory extramarital relationships.  Both Ams and Kat started their open marriage journey as "social swingers" with their husbands: they were looking for casual sexual experiences with other couples who were (or could be) friends, but emotionally intimate connections were off the table.  As time went on, a deeper connection developed between the Wives and their husbands, which led to a lot of excitement, but also a lot of drama. In this episode, the Wives discuss that struggle openly to each other for the first time.   Next, the Wives report back on their sexy homework: exploring independent dating and opening up to "the feels". Finally, it's Just the Tips for anyone who wants to explore swolly.  Want to learn more about Polyamory?  Check out our interview with Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, author of The Polyamorists Next Door.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE The Monogamish Marriage  We Gotta Thing TRAVEL WITH THE 2HOTWIVES Check out our EVENTS PAGE, for a chance to meet the 2HotWives in person, including: Podcast a Palooza: June 2022 Desire Riviera Maya: August 2022 Bliss Cruise: November 2022

If you and your partner enjoy recreational sex and emotional intimacy, you might be Swolly! Swolly is a form of consensual non-monogamy where a couple is open to both polysexual and polyamorous relationships.  Are you Swolly?  Tune in to find out.  But first, mix up a Tennessee Peach, this episode's sweet and sophisticated cocktail while Ams fan girls over Bridgerton and shares her hot tale of a total mindfuck with a smart and sexy new partner.  Next, the Wives explore the difference between swinging and polyamory, including this middle ground of Swolly. Swolly is a person who identifies as both a swinger and a member of the polyamorous community in that they have multiple relationships simultaneously and also enjoy recreational sex. The term is a portmanteau of the words swinger and polyamorous. Ken Haslam of the Kinsey Institute originally coined the term Swolly.  Here are some key components to Swolly: The foundation is a marriage/committed couple.  That relationship takes precedence over all other polysexual and polyamorous relationships  The couple is open to polysexual relationship and may  seek out casual sexual encounters or sex with "friends" that don't involve deep connections.  The couple is also open to polyamorous relationships that involve both physical and emotional intimacy.  The level of intimacy can vary between relationships (some relationships are purely polysexual, polysexual with friendship, or polyamorous).  Polysexual relationships are less complicated and involve less commitment.  You have a responsibility to make sure your partner is well taken care of during a sexual encounter (consent, pleasure, aftercare, the basic “camp-fire rule”), but you don't have responsibility toward that person outside of the sexual encounter.  You might be friendly, you might be friends, that aspect might ebb and flow, but you don't have a responsibility to build on anything outside of the bedroom. In Polyamorous relationships, you agree to share emotional intimacy, which means that you are committing to be an emotional support for this partner. These relationships can be more meaningful and rewarding, but also a lot of work.    To get a sexpert's opinion, the Wives interview Dr. Elisabeth "Eli", Sheff, expert witness, researcher, educator & relationship coach with expertise in polyamorous culture.  Finally, the Wives assign themselves sexy homework: The Wives and the Misters are going to explore more emotionally intimate relationships with some of their swinger friends, including solo dates and lots of talk about "feelings". Dr. Elisabeth “Eli” Sheff is a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. With a PhD in Sociology and certification as a Sexuality Educator from AASECT, Dr. Eli specializes in gender and sexual minority families, consensual non-monogamy, and kink/BDSM. Most people don't realise they are working against their brain function by doing the wrong tasks at the wrong time, resulting in decreased efficiency and effectiveness in their business and personal lives.  Wilson Lawrence is a Personal Development and Performance Coach who specialises in helping people find success without compromising their health and happiness.  Are You Busy? Often, people will get home and say it's been such a busy day, but they never stop and ask how effective and efficient they have been. Everyone is quick to tick items off their to-do list, but many only achieved 20% of what they wanted to accomplish.  Prefrontal Cortex The prefrontal cortex has five primary functions: Understanding Recall Inhibiting Memory Deciding  The more you use the prefrontal cortex, the faster it runs out of energy; therefore, you should be doing more mentally draining tasks at the beginning of the day and not wasting energy doing low energy tasks.  The Performance Pulse The idea of the performance pulse is to have 90-minute sessions of pure concentrate work with no distractions.  You need to take a passive or active recovery break between each performance pulse. Going on Facebook is not a recovery break because it uses mental energy.  Different Tasks & Mental Energy Usage Deep Thinking Tasks: These are high-energy tasks, such as planning, strategising, analysing, assessing, writing and working on spreadsheets. These tasks require your total concentration.  Meeting Tasks: Look at all the meetings. How many are there, how long do they go for, and when are they planned? Can you reduce the time and move them to later in the day, not in the mornings when you focus on your deep thinking tasks.  Routine Tasks: These are low-energy and do not require a lot of thinking energy, such as emails and returning phone calls.  Think About Your Patients As the practitioner, are there certain types of patients or services you should see earlier in the day and others later in the day?  In regards to the patient, think about their mental energy as well. If it's towards the end of the day, has the patient got any mental energy left? Consider this when you're explaining a treatment plan.  The more treatment options you give a patient, the more mental energy required to DECIDE.  "A confused mind says no, and so does a tired mind". Clustering of Performcnae Pulses To begin, look at which 20% of your tasks will give you 80% of the results you desire?  Next, ask yourself the focusing question. What's the one thing I should be doing right now that will make everything else easier or unnecessary. Deep Thinking Tasks are your first performance pulse and should be done in the morning, twice. (2 x 90-minutes), followed by active or passive recovery breaks, each 15-minutes.  After lunch, do your Meeting Tasks and plan your Routine Tasks towards the end of the day. If checking emails are essential, you can schedule them before your recovery breaks at the end of each performance pulse.   And when it comes to emails, there should be no double-dipping. If you open it, you immediately take action, and you do not return to it a second time.  Holidays When you take a holiday, do not neglect your travel companions or family; however, you can have a performance pulse when on holidays as long as you have scheduled it in and have planned it with your family.   Discovery Session with Wilson Lawrence If you want to organise a FREE Discovery Session with Wilson in February (2022), all you need to do is follow this Calendy Link: https://bit.ly/DiscoveryCallwithWilson. How do we choose the venues? What's the format? Can I register as a single? What if I'm not a particularly competitive player? (To address the latter two questions briefly: absolutely, and it doesn't matter.) Then Andy and Garrett have an in-depth discussion of Lawsonia Links, site of the annual Steamshovel event. Lawsonia was designed by William Langford and Theodore Moreau in 1930, and it is an important course both to Andy and to The Fried Egg. David M Frees is from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and in this episode, he will discuss FORCE MULTIPLIERS, a technique, when used correctly, will make podiatrists more powerful, better communicators and far more influential with their patients.   Dave Frees has been referred to as the Grandmaster of persuasion and influence by Steve Forbes, Editor-In-Chief of Forbes Magazine and Forbes Media. He's a sought after speaker on leadership, sales and marketing, and has had a close working relationship with podiatrists for many years.  Dave is a civilian; however, he has worked closely with the military and armed forces in the United States. He has taken what he has learnt from top negotiators, interrogators and special forces operators to devise a unique method for day-to-day business operations.    Topics discussed: Meta-Force Multipliers, Strategic Force Multipliers and Tactical Force Multipliers. Stories work when you imbed them within the content you are delivering to your patients.  Meta-Level Ways we can be a more powerful version of who we are. How can we think better Strategic-Level Ideas that guide us in the right direction. Developing systems for all our tactics makes them easier and easier to do. Developing a system for marketing - take the ideas in your head (strategy) to make them a reality (the tactic) Training is a strategic force multiplier. Building a system around training. Record the training Use it online Sell to other podiatrists Using rules and models (OODA LOOP) Get clarity around your purpose, values and mission, and knowing the exact patient you want is strategic.  When you know where your ideal patient is, you'll know where to do your marketing. Use this information to decide on the tactic, such as email.  Alignment: What we're about to do, is it in alignment with our purpose, values and mission and is it going to be loved and will it help support our ideal patients Tactical-Level Doing a particular type of marketing to get a specific type of patient. It is used to get the right kind of patients. Did it work? Yes, then do more of it. This forms part of your strategy. Meta Level is Mental Level (Mindset) Learning how to stay strong and recover from damage or a downturn in performance is meta-level thinking.  With a good mindset, you become way less bothered by problems.  Difference Between Persuasion & Influence is INTENT All human communication is manipulative in one way or another. When you tell a joke, you're trying to manipulate the person into laughing.  When you teach, you're trying to help someone become a more informed person. When you yell, you may be trying to intimidate. Some people say this is manipulation, but it depends on your intent. Helping someone is not manipulative.  Build Trust & Influence  Telling the patient the truth builds trust. If an orthotic is not going to help their problem, be truthful.  Be aware that patients may be imprecise with their speech, so circle-back with what they said to get more clarity.  When you repeatedly give the patient the result they are after, you will become influential, and this is where you want to be. Being influential is not being manipulative.  Also, when a patient trusts you, you can make a mistake, and they will forgive you.  Deeper Communication When a patient tells you their concern/problem, ask them, "WHAT ELSE?" They will dig deeper and give you more information.  Then say, "AND", and the patient will happily give you more information than you would have initially gotten from them.  You could also ask: "I'm curious, is there any other reason that you came here today or are there any other outcomes you would like out of this visit today?" or "How would your life be better if…." This communication tool is at the tactical level, and it may not work every time, but don't give up easily.  Remind yourself that it didn't work this time; with this patient on this particular issue, it doesn't mean it doesn't work.  Stimulus & Response There is usually a stimulus when you get angry, but there will be a small GAP between the stimulus and the response. It would be best if you learned how to put space between the stimulus and the response.  A cool little trick is to name that emotion when it occurs and recognise it.  "Ohh, that's anger that I'm feeling".  Take a deep breath, cultivate the gap and interrupt the response.   Interrupting the Gap Confusion often leads to frustration, then anger; however, confusion means you are about to make a breakthrough in your learning.  So instead of getting frustrated and angry, change the mental narrative to anticipation. Confusion leads to anticipation of new learnings, and this is a better mindset to get the learning you want.  Optimise What's Working  Optimise what's working and stop what's not working. It sounds simple, but it's hard for some podiatrists to do.  Constantly explore what's working in your business and spend some time hypothesising why it works and can you make it better.  Minor tweaks can make a massive difference in the outcome.  If you want to learn more from Dave or about his Business Black Ops event, held in Arizona each October, you can email his assistant Lisa at Lsnyder@utbf.com. You can also connect with Dave on Facebook at David M Frees or join his non-members Business Black Ops group.  Dave's Book: The language of Parenting If you have any questions or want to learn more about how I can help grow your business, please call me on 0408 671 966, send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com; otherwise, you can go directly to my online calendar and schedule a face-to-face Zoom meeting with me.  ONLINE CALENDAR  Youtube I record and upload most of my podcast interviews and other educational videos to my Youtube channel, Tyson E Franklin - Podiatry Business Coach. Jonathan Small is the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK, and today we're discussing the good, the bad and the ugly of the podiatry profession and how we think it can be changed for the better.  We also discuss: Why podiatry may be undervalued by the public. Apathetic podiatrists do not enjoy what they do and how this reflects on the patient.  Why do some podiatrists lose interest in delivering the highest care to their patients?  The benefits of associating with passionate podiatrists. The importance of new graduates seeing what good podiatry looks like before they open their own podiatry business.  Starting a business with good podiatric values.  Why cheap podiatry devalues good podiatry.  The danger of not using all your podiatry skills and falling into the trap of just doing easy work.  Changing the mindset of the profession. The benefits of working together, not in competition.  The Good: Are those podiatrists that are out there shouting the value of feet to the public and embracing the importance of ongoing podiatry promotion. The Bad: These podiatrists do not harm others, which is good, but they sit there idle and do no promotion for podiatry. These podiatrists usually need a little guidance to become good.  The Ugly: These are the trolls of the profession that go out of their way to harm others. You cannot help these podiatrists.   Final Tip Don't take the knocks from one individual about your value and worth as a podiatrist. Never take negative reviews from a patient personally. It's just one person's opinion, and for every one negative review, there will be hundreds of people singing your praises; they're just not putting it in writing.  If you have any questions or want to learn more about how I can help grow your business, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com; otherwise, you can go to my online calendar and schedule a FREE 45-Minute Discovery Call. Paul Griffin is an outside-the-box thinker and believes the skillset we possess as podiatrists is quite unique and can be utilised in many areas.  Paul graduated from Curtin University, Western Australia in 1998. He ran two podiatry businesses, each with a different clinical focus and in 2009 decided to move away from clinical podiatry to explore a diversified career. Paul currently splits his time running the education site, Bartold Clinical and is a director of Osaka Footwear Singapore.  In this episode we discuss: Results based practice. The credibility we have as podiatrists. Footwear innovations and trends. Building shoes for Osaka Footwear leading up to the Tokyo Olympics.  Podiatrists are the ultimate footwear reviewers because we get to see how the shoe actually performs with patients (the end-users). Reading the play and learning where to position yourself. Part-time podiatry is a real opportunity.  Final Tip Buy yourself some time to do other things, which means making sure you have time in your schedule to make sure it happens. If you try and add it on top of what you're already doing you'll burn out.  Explore what your character is looking for. It could be art, business or other projects, and then make sure you position yourself in that community so you can have those worthwhile, weighted discussions. Lindsey Ebbs is from Whitby, in the UK, and she openly admits she is a waffler. Still, she is not just any waffler, as described by her patients; she is an educated waffler. Through waffling, she has begun to etch out a new career path, in addition to her podiatry career, that she never thought possible a year ago.  As Lindsey explains, COVID has made us look at our podiatry businesses differently and how we communicate with our patients. What started as a simple newsletter idea has grown into something much larger.  Today we discuss: The art of educated waffling Covid and the changes needed to be made in business Writing like your having a conversation. The evolution of her patient newsletter Sharing our podiatry knowledge with other businesses  Showing An Interest During Covid, Lindsey became interested in what other businesses were doing in her small town to survive. What she learnt really interested her, so she thought others might feel the same, so she started writing about other businesses in her patient newsletter, and it was very successful.  As podiatrists, we get to chinwag a lot, so we're in a perfect position to hear about what is happening in town.  Invited to Write The business articles in her newsletter caught the attention of a local tourist publication called The Whitby Guide. Now her articles are published monthly and read by tens of thousands of readers around the world.  Guest Blogging Lindsey then approached Travel and Trek, thinking they wouldn't have much content about footwear and feet on their website, and asked if they would be interested in her podiatry knowledge, and they said YES.  "As podiatrists, we often forget about the skillset we have, and we need to tell people what we do in as many areas as we can".  The easiest way to get started is to think of all the businesses that could benefit from your knowledge and start contacting them.  You need to put yourself out there, and the worst thing that can happen is they say NO, and it won't kill you.  Final Tip Look at the businesses around you and look at what they’re doing. Can you help raise their profile? Can your podiatry knowledge be helpful? If it can, connect with them and provide the content.  If you're interested in watching the video of this particular episode, you can visit my YOUTUBE Channel, Tyson Franklin.   If you have any questions about this episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Lindsey Ebbs at Lindsey Ebbs Podiatry.   If you're looking for a Competitive Advantage over other podiatrists in your area, please visit my EVENTS PAGE, and consider joining my next group coaching program, the 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot or join the Podiatry Business Owners Club on Facebook.          .

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning
Expanding Your Awareness with a Deep Dive into the Most Important Concepts from Bob Proctor's Seminars

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2020 40:40

Today we are going to take a deep dive into the most powerful and important concepts from Bob Proctor’s seminars. If you have not yet heard episode #66[i], be sure to check out this episode first, to get some context behind how I met Bob Proctor, and how he influenced the work we are doing here today. I do suggest going to the show notes and writing down some of the ideas you learn from this episode, since these are some extremely powerful ideas that really can make an impact on your life. These concepts were learned from 6 years of working directly with Bob’s seminars, taking his courses over and over again, and then repeating them periodically over the past 24 years. These ideas changed the trajectory of my life, and I want to share them with you so you can have access them, and see if their application can impact your world, as much as it did for mine.I first met Bob when I was a teacher in Toronto, because his director of sales, Mark Low, lived next door to me at the time, and when I asked him what he did for a living, my whole world changed when he handed me Bob’s You Were Born Rich[ii]  book. Be sure to look in the show notes for the links, as Bob gives this book away for FREE on his website under his tips and tools section. Go there, download his book, and this lesson will make more sense once you have had a chance to look at the book first. Before I go into a deep dive of this book, which was also the first seminar I ever attended live (in May 1998), I want to give a backstory that you could relate to, if you’ve ever invested hours of your time creating something. Here’s how I remember this story (and remember from EPSIODE #44 “12 Mind-Boggling Facts About the Brain”[iii] that memories are not 100% accurate, so I’m telling you a story that I remember hearing many years ago and some of the details might be inaccurate, with the way that I’m remembering the events, but you will get the main idea of this story. So, when Bob was first writing this book, (my copy of the book shows a copyright date of 1997 which was just a year before my first seminar with him) and it was years before everyone carried their own personal laptop around. When I think back to writing reports or essays in school at this time, I used a typewriter, so I think that’s how Bob wrote his first book—the manuscript was a physical copy that he had typed, and he would carry it around with him to add more ideas to it, before he sending it off to the publisher.  On his way to the publisher, he took a taxi, again, years before we went everywhere via Uber, and he left the only copy of the book in the taxi. This story made me think of all those times I had written something, and then the computer crashed, and the document was not saved, or the times that I just lost something another way, and the only solution was to recreate what you’d lost, and that’s exactly what Bob did with this book. When you are reading it, think of the years of work that went into the stories in each chapter, and these are all true stories—I knew many of the people he wrote about—and then imagine that one day, these ideas were completely lost, and he had to recreate them again, for the world to gain access to them. It will give you an entirely new perspective when you are reading this book.Bob mentions in episode #66 that “he always believed he would reach the goals that he set and believed in the material and that goals are set not to GET—but to GROW.” It’s who we become that’s important in this process, not the things that we accumulate along the way, but the knowledge we acquire and how we use it to help others. When Bob first met me, he asked me “What do you really want?” and it took me back a bit because no one had ever asked me this before. I had to really think about it. I remember not being sure, but in the Born Rich Workbook we had the chance to revisit this and write out our heart’s desire. I still have the workbook from 1998 and what I wrote back then, isn’t far off from what I am doing today.  So, think about it, “What do YOU really want?” Have you written it out on a card like Bob still does and like I’ve been doing ever since?  Once you know what you want, then you will want to look at your beliefs and see if they integrate with your behavior. Then you will know what changes you need to make.Let’s Take a Deep Dive into Bob Proctor’s You Were Born Rich BookBIG IDEA #1 Paradigms: Something is Holding You Back. When You Become Aware of it, You Can Move Forward. Paradigms—what are they?  Paradigms could be controlling virtually every move that you make.“To ignore the power of paradigms to influence your judgment is to put yourself at significant risk when exploring the future. To be able to shape your future, you have to be ready and able to change your paradigm.” –Joel Barker, a technology and business futurist who published the book Paradigms in 1993.What’s interesting is that Bob Proctor is known for helping people to increase their life in the area of wealth, but that’s not what drew me to him. Even though his book was called You Were Born Rich, and his seminars focused on helping the attendees to build wealth, I was drawn to his work not just for the idea that I could make more money, but that I could increase the potential we had. This is where I started to see my own paradigms showing up.Let’s look at Paradigms. We used to sell the You Were Born Rich book for $20/copy and I remember having a box full of books at one of my first events, and within minutes, they sold out, and I was left with a few hundred dollars in one hand and an empty box in the other. This was the first time I thought, “I really need to write a book” as my awareness shifted as I identified a paradigm that I was ready to change—I was only used to earning money by trading my time, you know, go to work from 8am till 5pm kind of thinking and  you earn a paycheck this way. This was the way I was raised, but I was seeing now that there were other ways. With this book, I learned that we can create a product or service and if people want it, they would gratefully pay for it, giving anyone the opportunity to earn multiple sources of income. You could still work 8-5 but could also earn money from all over the world when you sell your programs and services online. I had only just started to interact with this book, hadn’t even taken the seminar yet, and my beliefs about earning money were beginning to change rapidly, without expecting it.Once you can change your belief, it opens up a whole new world. I began to see that we could earn money many different ways than how I was raised to believe.  When I started to sell for Bob, we would earn a certain amount of commission on each sale. Suddenly, we could sell a seminar seat and earn a few thousand dollars in a few minutes. This really changed my money paradigm quickly. The more you become aware, the more your mind opens up to new opportunities. Think about it like you are looking through a keyhole, and with more awareness, the keyhole opens up until eventually the door is wide open. Years later, when I worked in the corporate world, and had the chance to earn commission each year, it was not uncommon for the most successful sales reps to earn $50K-$300K in commission (on top of their yearly salary) but if your mind can’t grasp this, then you probably won’t be the one reaching this level.  Over the years I met many people working in the seminars, doing all different types of work. Some were truck drivers, some were business executives, some were educators like me. All of them had grasped this idea that we could earn income from multiple sources. This was a huge paradigm shift for me. How Do We Change Our Beliefs or Paradigms?Bob’s running a seminar this month on this very topic called the Paradigm Shift Seminar.[iv] I suggest going to the link in the show notes and watch the video at the top of the page.We first of all need to know what these paradigms are, before we can change them. I know it wasn’t until after a few years of working with Bob and he was always talking about these paradigms that we needed to change, that I finally asked, what exactly IS a paradigm? I had no idea what mine were. It’s easy to connect the dots looking back and see what they were now—I had all these notes from all these seminars, and could quote them word for word, but I still didn’t have the understanding of how all these pieces fit together. Do you know what your paradigms are? This takes time as we learn to integrate the information into our behavior and daily practice. Here are some steps that I found useful for changing our paradigms:IMAGE SOURCE :http://herzette-records.com/paradigm-shift a) Start by Identifying what paradigms are, then figure out what ones we want to change. We must understand what paradigms are controlling our behavior in order to make these changes. This starts with self-awareness[v] (that we dove deep into in EPISODE 2) and keep in mind that these habits have been passed down from your parents, and past generations (the ideas, thoughts, and beliefs of those who surrounded you when you were growing up, in addition to your environment) so it’s not our fault that we have these paradigms in the first place, and they aren’t bad, it’s just how we were raised and they might be preventing us from reaching our highest levels of potential. I’m pretty sure that I heard my Dad say “money doesn’t grow on trees” a few hundred times when I was growing up, so this was ingrained into my way of thinking—until I learned how to change it.b) Begin to study yourself and learn at the very core “who are you?” “Are you really doing the things you want to do?” “How do you approach change and challenge?” “How do you see yourself in the world?” Start here to identify who you are, and you will begin to see patterns that come up that keep you stuck where you are, preventing growth. You will discover what paradigms are controlling your actions, and in turn controlling your behavior and results. You can begin to identify your patterns, beliefs and behaviors the things that you need to change to reach these new results or levels of achievement.A Paradigm is a mental program that has almost exclusive control over our habitual behavior…and almost all of our behavior is habitual.Paradigms are a multitude of habits passed down from generation to generation.Paradigms are the way you view yourself, the world and opportunity.Paradigms are how you approach change and challenges.c) Once you’ve identified a couple of your paradigms, the work begins. Pick one habit or belief that you want to change and take new actions—while integrating your behavior and your beliefs with the new idea. You will change the paradigm when your beliefs and behavior line up by repeatedly taking new actions towards the new idea. The same way the paradigm was formed (repetition of action from those who raised you, or who you were surrounded by in your early years). You can do this with affirmations, by repeating the new belief over and over again, until one day it changes. You’ll need to repeat this over and over again (1,000 times at least) for 90 days until you actually believe it. An example of a paradigm that might hold you back from opportunity could be something like “no one at my age has ever done this or that” (I’m sure they have, so this is a limiting belief—find someone who has done what you want to do and ask them to mentor you) or another example “every time we’ve tried to reach this goal, we have failed, so I’m sure we will fail again this year” (if you think you will fail, I’m sure you will also, unless you try something new, a new angle). Another paradigm that might be passed down from generation to generation could be “no one in our family has ever done xyz…written a book, graduated from College, etc. I’m sure you are getting the point. We all have paradigms that hold us back, and until we change them, we will never reach the levels of achievement that we are capable of.d) Watch your whole world change when you identify and change your paradigms. Think of how mine changed when I saw that I could earn commission from sales or write a book and sell it to earn money all over the world. It opens up your thinking to a whole new level. If you are thinking “there’s no way that I could do any of these things, I work a job 8-5 and have no idea how this is possible” well, that’s a paradigm. I wrote my first book by waking up at 5am when I worked a corporate job. I would write 5 days a week 2 hours each morning before work, which was 10 hours a week and 40 hours a month. You really can accomplish anything that you really want to, if you have the will and desire to do it. I would love to hear from anyone who has identified and changed a paradigm that was holding them back. What was it, and how did you change it?BIG IDEA #2 Prosperity Thinking: The More We Give, The More We Stretch our Minds to Receive and Keep Giving More. This book starts off with a chapter that outlines our ways of thinking. We either think in lack and limitation, and that there’s not enough, or we can have abundant thinking. We even know from Mark Robert Waldman’s research from his recent book Neurowisdom: The New Brain Science of Money, Happiness and Success, that money does predict your happiness and that “those who make more money are happier, and those who are happier, live longer.”[vi] So, having a prosperity consciousness is vitally important for your future success as well as your health and longevity.Prosperity Thinking in Action:  How to Think into AbundanceBut how can this way of thinking be possible if we’ve just lost our job and are not sure where we will end up?  This is a timely question with unemployment being high at this time, all over the world. How can we create a prosperity consciousness when our bank accounts don’t have a paycheck being deposited every few weeks, or we can’t see what’s going to happen next? If you are thinking this right now, I highly suggest reading this book, and learning all you can on this topic. Changing your thinking from poverty consciousness (I don’t have enough) to prosperity consciousness (I have more than enough and want to share with others) was probably the most important lesson I learned after Sept 11th turned the US upside down.  Mindset and taking action is important in these transitional and uncertain times. I recently listened to Mark Cuban on LinkedIn being interviewed[vii] with tips for large or small businesses on how to navigate times like we are experiencing now, and his ideas all have to do with staying positive, being creative and pivoting your business which is what many of us did after Sept 11th. Before we can create new ideas, we must have our basic needs like food and shelter covered. When times change, and we need to find work, he suggests searching within an industry that’s doing well. Do some research and then see what areas match the skills that you have, so that you can pivot to something new, where you will find some success with your current skillset.  Once you find something, keep working, and don’t give up on any ideas that you might have had before this whole pandemic hit. Write them down, keep working and when times shift, like they always do, you can begin to put your focus on what you what to create. BIG IDEA #3 The Law of Vibration and Attraction: You Attract What You AreThe movie The Secret talks about this Law, and the book The Science of Getting Rich[viii] outlines this law, along with others, but my first introduction to these levels of vibration that Bob talks about often, was in Chapter 6 of the Born Rich book.  Bob mentions this law in our interview and also the quote from Andrew Carnegie at the top of Chapter 6, that says “Any idea that is held in the mind, that is either feared or revered will, begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate physical forms available.” This means that we draw to us what we think about—a person thinking positive thoughts will emanate positive energy and draw other positive personalities and situations to them, and a person with negative thoughts, will of course be in a negative vibration, or give off bad “vibes” that will repel positive personalities, drawing negativity towards them. What type of person do you want to be?  How does this work? There’s lots of different places to gain this understanding, ranging from a powerful book that I keep on my bookshelf, David Hawkin’s Power vs Force[ix] where he talks about low-energy frequency people vs high energy and the ranges of emotions that either drain us or fuel us.Our thoughts have a certain frequency, and the things that we draw to ourselves have the same frequencies as the thoughts that we have created—let’s say what’s on the same wavelength as we are. We cannot be thinking negative thoughts and be in line with positive thoughts at the same time. Since like attracts like, you will notice that when you are tuned into positive thinking, you will attract more positive things to yourself. In the interview with Bob, I asked him why we meet certain people at certain times in our careers who accelerate us? He answered “You attract them, and they attract you.” He drew Sandy Gallagher to his company when he had a need for someone who understood finances, and here was Sandy, sitting in a seminar, writing out that she really wanted to work with Bob, but it took her a bit of time until they were both in harmony with this idea. Once they were, the partnership was a success. The same goes with negative thinking. If you start off on the wrong side of the bed in the morning and do not change your thinking, you will attract more and more negative things to you as the day progresses. It can snowball either way for you, so why not let it snowball in a positive direction? Our goal is to raise our vibration level and be a positive, high vibrating person if we want to achieve our highest level of results.TIPS for RAISING YOUR LEVEL OF VIBRATION or FREQUENCY Positive thinking will help you increase your thought waves to that higher level of vibration. Just think of how great it feels when you are doing something that you enjoy, like listening to your favorite song, or enjoying the beauty of the landscape and nature around you. Practice recognizing how good you feel when you doing something that makes you happy. When you are feeling good, you are on the right track to raising your vibration, and when you are feeling bad, you are not on the right track. Do whatever it takes to stay in that good feeling, and your vibration will continue to rise.Limit your activities with people, places or situations that are on a lower level frequency. If you are operating on a higher level, you won’t be able to do this for long anyway, because it will drain your energy. Be mindful of who you are spending time with so that you can keep your level of vibration up.Spend more time with like-minded people who are positive like you. This will only allow you to keep increasing your level of vibration. Join a club or a group in which you can meet people with interests similar to yours and keep improving yourself.Be polite and mindful of others at all times. Over time and with practice, this will become a habit. If you are always thinking about ways to help others, it will be inevitable that your level of vibration will rise.Find ways that you can quiet your mind, and just spend time in this quiet to rejuvenate. Some people use meditation, and others find great benefits from yoga. Find what works best for you to relax, and then practice quieting your mind. Be open to what might happen here, as powerful thoughts can occur to you when you quiet your mind.Once you begin to increase your vibration, you will notice that your life will become more easier and more peaceful.BIG IDEA #4 Learn to Live Beyond the 5 Senses with the 6 Higher Faculties of the MindWe’ve all been raised to live through our five senses: what we see, touch, taste, hear and smell, but our 5 senses can be limiting. We can access new information, deeper flashes of insight, higher levels of creativity, if we learn to live with our 6 intellectual faculties that operate beyond our 5 senses for a competitive advantage. These intellectual faculties tap into the non-physical or spiritual world and help us to build new ideas.  How does this work?  Let’s see how we can learn to use the faculties of our mind to gain a deeper understanding, perspective or ideas.Perception is your point of view. This factor can be altered at will which means that you can always see two sides to a situation, but it takes the will and some effort to switch your way of thinking to see another side of something. Sometimes when I’m hiking, I can look at the trail when I’m going up, and the exact same spot, going down, looks completely different. What we see with our eyes can be viewed an entirely different way from someone else’s point of view, standing at a different viewpoint. PUT IT INTO ACTION: How can you use this concept to gain new ideas or perspective? If you are having a problem or disagreement with someone, try to look at the issue through their eyes to see a different point of view, not just your own.  You’ll notice with practice, this skill becomes easier, and it will open up your mind and you will become more flexible, improving your relationships with others. Reasoning is the ability to think. Having this faculty makes us different from other members of the animal kingdom; they do not have the ability to reason. In the book, The Strangest Secret[x], Nobel Prize-winner Dr. Albert Schweitzer was being interviewed and he was asked “What’s wrong with men today?” The great doctor answered, “Men simply don’t think.” Wallace D. Wattles, in his book The Science of Getting Rich[xi] agreed with this back in 1910 when he said, “There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and consecutive thought; it’s the hardest work in the world.” PUT IT INTO ACTION: Use your will to stay focused when you need to think and create new ideas. Critical thinking and reasoning is an important skill that we should be teaching to our children at an early age, so they can learn to think for themselves, rather than follow the crowd. Be sure you are always challenging young children to think for themselves by letting them make decisions. Ask them questions and see what answers they come up with.  I have a 10-year-old who often thinks of new ideas or angles that I might have missed, so I’m grateful to have more thinking minds in our home. The will is the understanding that each idea has a certain pattern and with focused attention, we have the ability to concentrate on what we are thinking about and increase the amplitude (the height of the wave) or thought wave and make them very powerful. PUT IT INTO ACTION: Use the will to lock into an idea and block out all other distractions. Using the will allows you to focus your mind on the things you want and lose focus on what you don’t want. Memory is something you can develop with practice. There is no such thing as a bad memory. However, just like your muscles, if your memory is not used, it can become weak. When you do not exercise the muscles in your body, they lose strength. This is exactly what happens when you are not practicing your memory. PUT IT INTO ACTION: Treat your mind with as much care and consideration as you would your body, as they are very much connected. The more practice you give this faculty, the stronger it will become. We have heard of some research-based strategies that are known to improve your memory, such as avoiding cramming and study what you want to remember used spaced repetition, relate new information to things you already know, be sure that you are sleeping well as sleeping consolidates memories, and adding visual images to what you want to remember. Imagination is Everything[xii] according to Earl Nightingale. All great inventions are created in two separate places: the mind of the inventor and the physical world when the inventor creates it. Our lives reflect how well we use our imagination, because when we hit one plateau of success, it will be our imagination that will take us to what’s next. PUT IT INTO ACTION: Write our where you see yourself in the next 3, 5 and 10 years. If you can do this in detail it will activate cells of recognition in your brain that when you imagine what you write, eventually your brain will accept and recognize what you are telling it, and it will go from feeling like a crazy pipe dream, to eventually something that you can see yourself actually doing, since you have thought about it so often.  One day you can make what you imagined, yoru reality. Intuition is a mental tool that gives us answers, by picking up the energy or feeling from another person or situation. We can even read a person’s energy over the telephone or the internet as I experienced in EPISODE 65 with Dr. Barbara Schwarck[xiii]. Sometimes we feel we just know the answer, or we have a gut feeling. That is our intuition at work, and we must learn to develop it. With practice, we can learn to trust our intuition and become confident with that which we feel or know. Then, we can move confidently toward that which we want. PUT IT INTO ACTION: The best book I have ever read on developing intuition was called Developing Intuition from Shatki Gawain[xiv].  This was probably one of the most valuable skills I learned to help guide my personal and professional life. I never needed to ask anyone else for advice, as I had my own built in guidance system that helped me to stay in a productive state of mind. BIG IDEA #5 Spirit is Everywhere. We are all Connected, Like a Rainbow (SIP)This next idea, I put an image of what I’m describing in the show notes. When I asked Bob about the quantum world that Dr. Dan Seigel talks about, where there is this plane of possibility where we can create anything, Bob answered with “I believe the physical realm that we live in and the spiritual world, are all connected, like the colors of the rainbow.” When we take an idea, it comes in from spirit, hits our intellectual mind, and it’s up to us whether we move it into form. Have you ever had an idea that you thought was brilliant, and you never did anything with it, and then suddenly you see someone else has created it? That’s because there is only one mind, and that we can all tap into these ideas.  Think of the three levelsSpiritIntellect/MindPhysical/Body What you can see (physical world) and what you cannot see (non-physical world) are all connected.  The physical is a manifestation of the non-physical. Another way to look at this, is to think about WATER in the physical world. We can see it. We add heat to water and it turns to STEAM (intellectual level) and add more heat to it and it turns to AIR (spiritual level). Just because we have changed the state of water from its physical form to AIR in the spiritual level, it doesn’t mean that the water doesn’t exist. It exists and when cooled down and goes right back to water. So, what we see in the physical world and what we cannot see, are all connected.Since spirit is for fuller expression and expansion, ideas (like I want to write a book) come in through the spiritual level and are looking to be expressed (from a higher to a lower potential). Think of when you ask for help from God through prayer, you are in the physical realm, reaching the spiritual realm with your thoughts for help or ideas. Ideas that come to your mind (your intellect) from the spiritual realm and it’s up to you if you will bring them to physical form. This is called the Creative Process.PUT THIS INTO PRACTICE: THE CREATIVE PROCESSDo you pray? Do you meditate? Do you believe in a higher power, or something bigger than yourself?  If you do, you will find this process fascinating, it you learn to use your FAITH through understanding. You will get new insights, and ideas through this practice that will keep you busy. Write out what comes to your mind here and see if the ideas match what you really want to BE/DO or HAVE or CREATE.  When you get an idea that’s congruent to what you want, you will want to take action with this idea. BIG IDEA #6 Thomas Troward- Fuller Expression, Increasing Life Always Aim for Bigger and Better Things There really are no limits to the heights that we all can reach and a reminder that it’s not what you’ve got that’s important, it’s who we become in the process of reaching our goals.“Nothing is impossible to the mind. All its guidance and power are available to you. When you have fully realized that THOUGHT CAUSES ALL,You will know that there are no limitsThat you yourself do not impose.” –US Andersen, author of The Magic in Your MindThomas Troward: Dore Lectures on Mental ScienceRight now if you ask Bob Proctor what he’s studying, he’d say he’s reading Troward’s The Dore and Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science[xv] and I’ve had this book and a couple of others from Thomas Troward in my Kindle iPhone library for the past 6 years and haven’t read them. I just looked through them and saw a section on Intuition, healing, the will, the body, soul and spirit—everything that we talked about in these 6 BIG IDEAS except healing. I can see why he would be reading this book, sharpening his higher faculties, deepening his connection with spirit and doing all that he can to deliver his message to help as many people as he can. Bob always read a section of Troward’s Dore Lectures on Mental Science in the Science of Getting Rich Seminar. One day, while he was running a seminar, I asked him if I could read the passage from the stage, because I was just dying to practice my public speaking and had memorized the quote. So, I read this by memory, and if there’s any passage of information I recommend anyone memorize, it’s this one. “My mind is a center of Divine operation. The Divine operation is always for expansion and fuller expression and this means the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth. Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; consequently in my special world, of which I am the center, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone before.”What does this mean? It means that my mind/your mind is a center (there’s more than one center) but we are all connected, and there are no limits. If I was to stop there, I think that’s enough to motivate any of us to reach higher than we might have reached in the past. We are Limitless. This Divine operation is always expanding (there’s as much power above it as below it) and this means the production of something that has gone before, something entirely new, not included in past experience, through proceeding out of it, in an orderly sequence of growth. This means that what you are capable of will not be a repeat performance of something you have done before, although your past experience prepares you, but it will move you BEYOND where you have ever been, to GROW and EXPAND in an orderly way. Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; (so trust in the way your life unfolds—it’s all going the way it’s supposed to go) consequently in my special world, of which I am the center, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone before. Meaning that when we keep working diligently towards our goals in life, we will keep producing NEW results that go beyond where you were before. We are always expanding and growing when we are taking action—so keep aiming for bigger and better things, and never stop learning/growing. REVIEW OF THE 6 BIG IDEAS:BIG IDEA #1 Paradigms: Something is Holding You Back. When You Become Aware of it, You Can Move Forward. Take some time to figure out what paradigms are holding you back, and start to work on changing just one paradigm at a time. This will require some work, as the paradigm is ingrained in your non-conscious mind, but with time, one day, you will look back and notice the growth that occurred because you took the time and put in the effort to make this change.BIG IDEA #2 Prosperity Thinking: The More We Give, The More We Stretch our Minds to Receive and Keep Giving More. Where is your thinking right now? I know that these are difficult times, but if you notice your mind leaning towards lack and limitation instead of abundant thinking, it’s time to take immediate action. Go somewhere where you feel energized and begin to work on changing your thinking. Volunteering or helping others can also help shift your mindset here, as you begin to see that your situation is much better than many other people in the world, and this can help shift your mindset.BIG IDEA #3 The Law of Vibration and Attraction: You Attract What You Are. If you have had trouble achieving your goals, this is the first place I would look. Do you know yourself well enough to know whether you are operating at a high or low frequency? When you are feeling good, and life is flowing, you are definitely on the right track. If things are difficult, and you feel unhappy, something needs to change, and the change starts with changing your energy or frequency by thinking new thoughts, that will stimulate new feelings and motivate you to take new actions, that in turn will change your conditions, circumstances and environment. The change begins with you.BIG IDEA #4 Learn to Live Beyond the 5 Senses with the 6 Higher Faculties of the Mind. You don’t need to master all 6 of these at once, but if you just picked ONE to work on and sharpen for the next year, you will notice the results in your life change. Pick one factor, and really dive deep into studying it in your spare time. Writing this episode has been a powerful review for me as well. I’m always working on improving my intuition, because I think it’s just fun to see how often you can guess something ahead of time, but I also see the importance of working on some of the other faculties, like the imagination, which is a key ingredient for creating something new. This is where inventors of the past went to figure out how to make the airplane take flight, where the iPhone was created and where the inventions of the future will come from. Also, just a reminder to not let what we see (with our senses-which are limiting) going on in the world limit or control us. We can’t change it, but we can keep studying, learning and growing, so that we change and improve ourselves when times are difficult. BIG IDEA #5 Spirit is Everywhere. We are all Connected, Like a Rainbow. This idea has come up with Dr. Daniel Siegel’s work where he talks about the fact that quantum physics proves that there are 2 realms: one where we operate through our senses, and the other, the plane of possibility that is timeless. We could spend a considerable amount of time thinking about this idea, but I’m just going to trust that my understanding will continue to grow here as I continue a daily meditation, prayer, and gratitude practice. The faith that comes from this practice is based on understanding and when new ideas come, I know it’s important to act on these ideas and do the work with the talents and skills that God has given me. Each of us will have our own meaning with this idea, based on our individual beliefs. Whatever you believe, find the practice that works for you to feel this connection.  BIG IDEA #6 Thomas Troward:  Life is for Fuller Expression, Increasing Life Always Aim for Bigger and Better Things. Keep studying, learning, growing and reach for more in life. You won’t be able to do this alone, so be sure that you find mentors to help you reach your new levels of achievement. Just keep learning, increasing your awareness, and growing. And answer the question “What do you REALLY want?” There is great opportunity for the person who understands themselves. I hope that you have found these ideas as powerful as I have. Remember, these are just a few of the most powerful concepts I learned from working 6 years directly with Bob Proctor, attending his seminars live, and then continuing to study and apply these ideas.  These concepts do take time before the results become apparent, but if you really want something, you will do the work and one day, you will look back, and realize that you have achieved the goals you’ve always wanted, so that you can then help others do the same.If you found this episode helpful, please share it on social media, and tag me. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast. If you’ve been listening to our podcast and wonder what exactly we do at Achieveit360.com, go to our website and take a look.[i] We provide courses, books and tools for teachers to implement Character and SEL programs in the classroom along with other consulting services that can be used in the corporate workplace. You can watch this interview on YouTube, but you won't be able to hear the backstory, unless you listen through your favorite podcast channel. Listen to all past episodes here.  Here’s the Back Story behind the programs and services that were inspired by our guest today, Bob Proctor. You can go to our website’s About Us[ii] section to see an outline of the last 20 years, and you will see a picture of him at the top of the page, but first let me explain who he is. In 1961, Bob Proctor started studying the book, Think and Grow Rich[iii] (right now it’s showing as #1 in Entrepreneurship Books on Amazon) and this book transformed his life. If you’ve been lucky enough to see Bob Proctor speak live, you’ll see this book and one look at it, you’ll know he’s been reading it every day.He listened to Earl Nightingale’s condensed recording of the book thousands of times, he said he would put this record player in his car and listen to it (back in the days that I can still remember when we had vinyl records before music and audio recordings became available online). He then created his own position that allowed him to work shoulder-to-shoulder with Earl Nightingale at Nightingale-Conant (that at the time was the largest distribution house for personal development programs). He worked there until 1973, before leaving to start his own personal development company where he’s been training people around the world ever since. Today, Bob has studied thousands of books, continues to read Think and Grow Rich every day, and is considered the world’s foremost expert on the human mind.I can personally say that Bob Proctor is one of the rare speakers out there who truly lives and breathes what he teaches, with full integrity—he walks his talk and inspires those around him to do the same. I was fortunate enough to cross paths with Bob in the late 1990s when I was a school teacher in Toronto, when I asked my neighbor, Mark Low, what he did for a living, and he didn’t say much, but he handed me Bob’s You Were Born Rich[iv] book that I read the next day in a staff meeting (hiding it behind my binder as I pretended I was listening to the meeting) and my life was never the same after that day. The book was not just about being rich financially, but was about being rich in potential, saying that we all have deep reservoirs of talent within ourselves, and that we have greatness locked up inside ourselves...everyone has reservoirs of great talent and ability within us and if we can bring it to the surface we can accomplish anything we want. I really liked that idea. That was 24 years ago, and it’s definitely been a journey that started when I quit my job as a teacher and went to work in his offices selling seminars. I want to share some of the top lessons learned from Bob, before we go into the interview. I will definitely do a deep dive into his content after this episode, as it’s so valuable, but looking back to the day I met him, here are my biggest take-aways. If you have some that you want to share, please tag me on social media when I post this interview and share some of yours.Lesson 1: I learned how to set huge goals that most people would say were crazy when Bob asked me “what do you really want?” When I told him, he told me that there were certain steps I needed to follow, that started with writing my goals down on this card he gave me, and if I did all the things he suggested, and believed in what I was doing, I could have what I wanted. I really believed him and followed what he told me to do. Lesson 2: I learned how to be resourceful and make money based on my natural talents and skills. When Sept 11th happened, I had just moved to the US and had big plans of what I was doing...all of them halted just like many peoples plans halted or changed during the pandemic, but I knew I was great with children, and ended up getting a job as a nanny through one of the local resorts, eventually being the most requested nanny’s there. I also always valued keeping a clean and tidy house, so when I needed to make more money, I found work cleaning houses that was great money, and also very humbling, and not far from the work that Bob did in his early days...he would talk about it all the time, how he made great money cleaning offices, and it kept me on track with my goals. Lesson 3: I learned the basics of sales, which came in handy when I worked in the publishing industry. It was this skill, along with persistence, that allowed me to earn enough money to buy my first home in AZ and start living the life that I described when he first met me, and asked me “what do you really want?”Lesson 4: Was on how to generate energy so that I could accomplish more in less time. There was this one time that I was going to an event at 5am and this was years before I was an early riser. I was not like this when I lived in Toronto. When the car arrived at my house one morning to take me to an event, Bob was in it, and when I jumped in...he asked me how I was. And this at 5am it was pitch black, and I was probably still sleeping...and I said I was tired...and Bob said...pardon? I thought he was losing his hearing so I leaned forward and told him again, I’m tired Bob...and then he said something I never forget to this day.He said, “I thought you knew that we can create our own energy.”I was quiet for a minute and realized that he was expected me to integrate what he was teaching at these seminars...into my daily life."Ahhh"...I said...and I never told him I was tired again. And when anyone ever asked me how I was, and I was tired, I never admitted that…ever again.I learned how to generate my own energy through diet and exercise that ensures I can accomplish more, but it started that early morning, when bob asked me “how are you?”Bob has always surpassed me with energy. He’s got more energy than anyone I’ve ever seen. He starts his seminars on a Thursday or Friday night, and runs straight through till late Sunday night, never sitting down, taking a break, or saying, phew, I’m tired. Lesson 5: Is about the impression of increase or to put in more effort than you expect back. Well, that came from the SGR seminar and is a concept that has stuck with me to always do my best, without expecting any gain.Lesson 6: is about integrating your beliefs with your behavior. If you look at your goals, and what you believe, then look at whether the actions you are taking line up and ask “is by behavior consistent to what I want?”  I learned that Bob really does do ALL of the things he says he does. There was one day about a month after Sept 11th happened and I was in the same place he was staying at for a few days, and I knew things were up in the air with his company as no one was getting on airplanes to travel to the seminars. Things had changed overnight just like that. When I looked over at where he was sitting, I saw that he was reading Wayne Dyer’s There’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem[v] and I knew right then and there that Bob was looking for answers on where to pivot to next. He’s always reading something to gather new ideas and strategies and of course I bought that book immediately not wanting to miss out on some important knowledge.Lesson 7: To live every day like it’s your last. He’s the one who told me the idea that when you really want something, you are trading your life for that goal. That didn’t make sense until recently, I see the work that went into where I am today, and yes, I traded my life for that. The daily repetitive work towards the goal I always wanted, until I got to one level, then to next, and I can see how I traded each day for that goal I wanted and am grateful that I picked a worthy goal to trade my life for.Lesson 8: Excellence is a commitment to completion. I learned to complete what I start early on, not that I’ve always done this, but I know how important it is to see a project through until it’s completed. Whether it’s a project, or something as simple as saying, I’m going to the gym and actually taking the action to go, when we say we are going to do something, I believe in the importance of doing it.Lesson 9: when stuck with your direction, I learned how to write out on a piece of paper on the left side what I don’t want, let’s say you are not happy with your work, you’ll want to get a clear picture of what will make you happy, and seeing it on paper will open your eyes. Once you know what you don’t want, it’s easy to go to the right side and write the polar opposite on the paper....so you know what you can work towards. This is a huge lesson in self-awareness. You’ll get to know yourself better after you do this and then you need to honor the things that make you happy.Lesson 10: I learned that success really is possible if you really want it, but there will be work involved. If I am willing to do that work that involves daily reading, studying and then taking action on the ideas I want to create, that “strange and marvelous things will happen with constant regularity as you alter your life.”I would love to hear any thoughts or take-aways as you listen to the interview. Let’s get straight to the interview…and hear directly from Bob Proctor himself. This is episode #66 with world renowned speaker, motivation and success coach, author of best-selling books, and my mentor, Bob Proctor[vi].Welcome Bob, thank you so much for taking the time to come on this podcast that really is here because of you, for inspiring me 24 years ago to take action with these ideas. You asked me “what do you really want?” and I told you. Then you showed me how to get it and here we are today. Thank you so much for helping me to create the life that I saw all those years ago. I’ve had a chance to thank pretty much everyone who’s helped me along the way, kept in touch with Greg Link from the Covey Organization and he always asks how you are doing, so along with thanking you, I wanted to be sure to pass on a few of the people along the way who have always asked about you because you’ve made such an impact on their world as well. Another person was Joe Gray, from Sunlife’s Scarborough Branch. My Mom worked there, and she still keeps in touch with him, and he’s always asking about you because of the impact you made with those guys selling life insurance back in the day. The last time I was there, they all still carried their goal cards in their shirt pockets. Thanks for all you’ve done to wake so many of us up to take action and create a life that we wouldn’t have thought was possible without you pushing us to think of the limitless possibilities.INTRO: Bob, the reason I wanted to reach out to you, and have you on this podcast is because I discovered social and emotional learning skills that are making inroads in our schools today, with plenty of research to back up the results that occur with students who study these skills—I discovered them, by chance through you and we are a year into this podcast now, and are experiencing incredible results, showing me that people are looking for ways to learn new strategies and tools to improve their results, using the most current neuroscience, while also tapping into their own social and emotional skills…and you knew this YEARS AGO…Can I take you back to when I had this HUGE AHA moment? It was one of those unforgettable moments, you know, one of those moments in our life when we know things will never be the same again—a clear moment of truth. Like when I think back to it, there could have fancy orchestra music playing as if to say, “Pay Attention Andrea!”  You were working with a group of teens we called them YMI or Youth Mentor International (I think we were in New Orleans at the Superdome) with skills that developed their attitude, mindset, confidence and goal-setting abilities, (what we used to call soft skills) and it skyrocketed their results.I know you’ll remember Brian Johnson, but not sure if you would know that at the time you were showcasing these students, I was in the audience of at least 8,000 people, and Brian had just started to speak his part and share what he was learning from you, and he started to stutter, and we’ve all been there, public speaking at any age is stressful, let alone at the Louisiana Superdome and you stood behind this teen and rubbed his back in such a way that he calmed down and was able to speak without any problems, and I was blown away, on so many levels.  As a teacher, I had really struggled to make an impact on the students in my classroom, and then here were these 12 teens talking about their unusual results after only a few months of working with lessons that mirrored what we now know to be called growth mindset, self-awareness and self-regulated learning that are now evidence-based strategies being implemented in schools (and workplaces) around the world.  I just remember it felt like a brick hit me in stomach, and I seriously couldn’t breathe, I just started crying, my face went all red and blotchy, because I knew at that moment that this was it—this is what I was meant to be doing for the rest of my life, and then I had to go and help Gina with back of the room sales and then Milt Campbell who was up on stage that day, was there and came over to introduce himself to me—and I knew I needed to learn what you were teaching these kids more than anyone.Q1: Thinking back to those 12 YMI teens you started working with (and then the hundreds of them who followed working with the tape program) Why do you think these teens had such incredible results after just a few months of working with you and these lessons?  What were they missing? Q2: You’ve been studying for almost 60 years now—if we count back to when you started reading Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich book and I wonder what you think are some common reasons that people don’t reach their full potential? I think it’s something that I learned from your You Were Born Rich Book, to recognize the potential in ourselves and other people (and I know that we all have this potential) I see it especially with young people—some of them shine like a bright light—but only the rare few actually develop their talents and abilities to their fullest. I wrote down this quote in 1999 (I think from the SGR Seminar). You said “the person who is certain to advance is one who is too big for his place and has a clear concept of what he wants to be—who knows that he can become what he wants to be and is determined to be what he wants to be.” It makes sense to me that schools are now teaching self-awareness to students to help them to uncover their strengths but what do you think is the formula that we should all know on how to develop an unwavering belief in our abilities so we don’t default back to doubt/worry/ anxiety and fear that sabotages our results?Q3: Back when I worked with your offices, I was always looking for something to study and I found this old video program, called “The Journey of the Mind” where you were walking through this set that has large stones, and you covered topics like responsibility, paradigms, goals, attitude, persistence, and decision. This program became the outline of my first book, The Secret for Teens Revealed[vii] and you wrote the foreword and it became the backbone for the courses that I’ve created for the school market. I don’t know what ever happened to that course you created, but I think it’s crazy to think that years later, Carol Dweck published her book Mindset: The Psychology of Success[viii] (that changed millions of lives with its insights into growth mindset). You didn’t call it growth mindset but were teaching this all along with your programs when you were teaching about changing results by changing our beliefs. What about YOUR belief Bob? When you were creating some of these programs that didn’t take off (I think the one I saw was never produced into a film like it was supposed to) did you ever lose belief in what you were doing? How did you stay on track until your programs took off the way you envisioned?Q4: I know when things really changed for your organization, and it was when Rhonda Byrne contacted you about appearing in this movie, The Secret,[ix] that accelerated your work around the world, along with many others. For those who have never heard this story, can you share how you just happened to be in the right place, at the right time, to meet her? Why do you think we meet certain people at certain times in our life who accelerate us/take us to our next level and what can we do to prepare ourselves to be ready when this happens?Q5: This is the only science-based question, but I have to ask it because it ties directly to your work.  I’ve been studying Dr. Daniel Siegel[x] (do you know Dan?) He’s a clinical professor of psychiatry from UCLA’s School of Medicine and executive director of The Mindsight Institute[xi] who did episode 28 on “Mindsight: The Basis for Social and Emotional Intelligence”[xii] and he has spent years showing the scientific connection between the mind and the brain. Dan talks about that “science clearly demonstrates that we have 2 realms in our physical universe—and this is not commonly known.”  He asked 3,000 tech experts and 3,000 therapists and only 5% had ever heard of this. That reminded me of when you asked all those schoolteachers if they knew what the faculties of their mind were, and none of them could tell you. Well, Dan shows how there is one world where time/space exist, and the other world, the quantum world, is timeless and full of possibilities. To me, this is what Wallace D. Wattles speaks about in The Science of Getting Rich[xiii] book that inspired half a billion people since the movie The Secret was inspired by this book and all the possibilities that exist in this other realm. Can you talk a bit about what you know about this second realm as it pertains to not only making money, but the place we go in our mind when we pray, or say our affirmations, or reach during meditation, because science shows that there is this plane of possibility or the “formless source” where anything is possible. Q6: I listened to the podcast you did with Lewis Howe’s[xiv] this weekend. I love that guy and his podcast and learning from those who are doing well within industry, and it made me think of something else I wanted to ask you. Do you have time to cover one last Q? If so, what do you think is important for all of us to be thinking and doing during these strange times? Thank you, Bob, I want to let people know about your upcoming programs, and how they can learn more about you. This is Part 3 of the 'New Speech Series' called 'GUARD YOUR TONGUE'. I will be using the Scriptures and the book entitled 'Guard Your Tongue' Adapted by Chofetz Chaim, by Rabbi Zelig Pliskin. This book is a practical guide for the Laws of Lashon Hara – avoiding derogatory/negative/critical and evil speech. This Wednesday we studied some more of the Torah Commandments of YHVH Elohim concerning Lashon Hara and studied on FORGIVENESS so we can be free from bearing a grudge or wanting revenge. I also read and explained from the chapter 1, the points 1. TRUE & FALSE DEROGATORY STATEMENTS; 3. HABITUAL SPEAKERS OF LASHON HARA & 5. REFUSING ONE'S PARENTS & TEACHERS, from the book I mentioned above, looking into different 'Case Studies' to understand how these Laws should be applied in our own life in the century we live. It is the lack of clear instruction that is not helping God’s people to be careful with what they say! This study is an eye opener concerning how serious the bad use of the tongue is. Simply Designed Life | Business, Lifestyle Design, and Productivity Tips From Women Entrepreneurs and Gamechangers

As mentioned in my previous episode, we're changing things up on the podcast and bringing you all in for the journey. Thus, we’ve split this particular episode into two parts. Part I (Episode 36) had addressed Scott’s corporate background and how he transitioned into an elite branch of firefighting known as the Hotshots. Coincidentally enough, a movie based on the Hotshots just came out in theaters in September and Scott mentioned knowing about 17 of the 19 who’ve sacrificed their lives in order to be of service to others. In this episode we continue our conversation on podcasting and gender marketing styles. Please note, these are just generalizations and of course there are exceptions. We dive into the topic of vulnerability to connect to your audience—who you’re meant to serve and who are meant to learn from you. This is Part II of my conversation with Scott Mulvaney. If you haven't listened to Part I, you could listen to it here. If you happen to be in the Philadelphia area, this weekend, Sunday I’m proud to present at a workshop in partnership with PHLBloggers. (Details are below under Resources and Events Page.)   Who is Scott? Scott Mulvaney has a philosophy to help others live The Fired Up Epic Life! He launched the LIVE THE FUEL Podcast in 2016 to help FUEL your health, business and lifestyle. Through years spent in sales, marketing, operations, and management he's here to help you control how you exist in the online marketplace. Scott Mulvaney acquired 20+ years of conquering professional roles in sales, marketing, coaching, training, leadership development, and the fitness space. His fitness niche has spanned 15 of those 20+ years. He is a "Scott of All Trade's" with an adrenaline junkie, athletic, yet techy passion for self-development and lifestyle transformation. Scott embodies the limitless energy necessary for success. This is fueled by his years in the health and fitness coaching space. His lifestyle freedom passions include balancing life with CrossFit, skiing, cycling, skydiving, and travel. Scott balances professional pursuits with philanthropic activities, having served as board member and investing countless volunteerism hours with multiple 501(c)(3) organizations. Scott's diverse background includes having served in public service as a Hotshot Wildland Firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service as well.   Quotes from Scott  You have to put in the reps. Those mistakes, those failures—that's what teaches you the most... If you don't start taking action, or putting in the work, or go get that job, in a couple different roles that may potentially be how you want to run your company, you don't know and you've never made the mistakes in that position. So how are you supposed to learn from that and use that in the future to grow your own business? (4:32) The one thing I learned really fast when we got assigned our first was 'holy crap, here's reality.' They talk about it, they have you study it, they have you memorize it, but it's a whole different world until you get out into that fire line. That goes for business. You think you're prepared for everything until you turn that website on, or you turn your podcast on, or you open the front door of your new studio... if you're not willing to take action and take the risks, how are you supposed to learn? (5:25) You've gotta stop with the comparison stuff. Us guys, we compare stuff too, but we also realize, 'You know what? Forget you, I'm posting it, it's either gonna work or it's not, and if it doesn't I'm gonna learn something from that.' And trust me, there are definitely some ladies that embrace that and get it done. (24:27) What You’ll Learn Advice he got from a previous MAPCon event on how failures and mistakes are critical to learning valuable business lessons Online and offline component to learning along with a visual, auditory or kinesthetic (VAK) approaches How men's web content may appear more confident and aggress...

I had met Scott Mulvaney at the Mid-Atlantic Podcast Conference in the Philadelphia area where he spoke about embracing change. What I like about this next episode in particular is hearing not only his transition from corporate sales to public service, but hearing about his own personal transformation and who he became in the process. In my commitment to changing things up on the podcast and bringing you all in for the journey, we’re splitting this particular episode into two parts. Part I addresses Scott’s background and how he got into an elite branch of firefighting known as the Hotshots. Coincidentally enough, a movie based on the Hotshots just came out in theaters in September and Scott mentioned knowing about 17 of the 19 who’ve sacrificed their lives in order to be of service to others. Part II will discuss podcasting and the differences in gender styles when it comes to marketing. Please note, these are just generalizations and of course there are exceptions. And we dive into the topic of vulnerability in connection to marketing and being vulnerable to your audience, who you’re meant to serve and who are meant to learn from you. Actually, this weekend, Sunday in fact I’m proud to present at a workshop in partnership with PHLBloggers in Philadelphia, PA. (Details are below under Resources and Events Page.)   Who is Scott? Scott's diverse background includes having served in public service as a Hotshot Wildland Firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service as well.   Quotes from Scott  I negotiated my own dismissal from my job because I hated it...I was selling retirement plans and stuff like that for ADP and I was the second top salesperson. My boss said,'You want to leave? You're kicking ass, you've only been here a year.' I said, 'Yeah, but I hate it.' So I was like, 'My degree is about to be done and I've got this thing, so I need some time freedom.'  (12:06) I was already hired, whether they liked it or not, I was there, man. Like I'm becoming one of their brothers. In the beginning of that rookie year—I'm also considered 'the old guy,' that's the best part, I'm 31 and I'm like 'really dude?' (16:40)  Here's the crossover that I'm kind of hinting at. I've met some driven Millennials. And the one thing they all end up getting is that they know that they can do more. They don't have blinders on. Whereas, a lot of us in the Gen X World have blinders on. (23:48) Nowadays when I look at the Millennial generation, I love it. There's a lot of drive, there's a lot of passion. They hear and they see thanks to social media that there are people out there getting it done and finding a way to do things outside the box, launch online businesses, launch online successful shopping carts, websites, blogs, podcasts, whatever. (24:50) Have the psychology, have the drive, have the mindset, that you know that you're capable of more,
