It's a shocking (and unsustainable) statistic - 70% of professionals are disengaged on the job. Engaged Pursuit was founded to fix that. How are we doing that? By (finally) focusing on the employee and their experience. The Engaged Pursuit podcast wi
Quick, what does the word "Career" mean to you? You're probably thinking of the "big stuff" (job change, promotion, etc). But we've found that Career is also a lot of the little stuff too (dealing with a crappy manager, lots of org changes, working with difficult co-workers, etc). The equation isn't simply Career = Change. Rather, it's Career = Change + Everyday Experiences. And this is where a lot of tech organizations and tech managers fall short. They aren't prepared to help tech professionals through these (everyday) experiences, which all contribute (greatly!!) to Career. That's where Engaged Pursuit comes in... Founder Tom Perry has created a new framework to help tech professionals maximize both the big Career stuff as well as work through the smaller Career stuff that happens everyday. It's a new spin on the 30-60-90 day plan that many of you are familiar with if you've started a new job. Tom's developed a 30-60-90 HOUR framework to help tech professionals build a plan to tackle both the big and small Career events. And, for the month of September, he's offering a special promotion to get you ready for the return to work after summer break - a "BOGO" workshop! Schedule a couple hours of time with Tom to work through your Career issue (using the 30-60-90 hour guide) and you'll only be billed for one hour. How's that for a deal!?!?! The July 2022 unemployment numbers were released this morning, and the numbers blew away all expectations. Analysts were predicting just 25,000 additional jobs created during the month. The reality? Over 525,000+ jobs were added to payroll in July. I'd call that a big win! Now how these numbers affect the biggest economic question right now ("Are we or are we not in a recession??") is yet to be seen. But this is a great sign that one important ingredient (unemployment) is moving in the right direction (and at 50 year lows!). What's the impact on the tech market specifically? Founder Tom Perry highlights the impact that these numbers are having on the tech sector, from hiring "vibe(s)" to hot segments within the tech industry. "I need more balance in my life!" It's something we hear from our tech clients all the time. Especially over the past 2+ years, professionals are constantly looking for ways to feel more in-control of their experience. The issue? Most folks go BIG when creating strategies to create more WLB. Stuff like "exercising more" or "no phone after 7pm" or "Email doesn't exist on the weekend!" And, with most things, it's good for a couple weeks and then ... well, let's just say our behavior mirrors New Years Resolutions... But what if there was a better, easier way to tackle this balance issue? Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry has found one (easy) way to try to improve balance - and that's to incorporate a little more fun into his daily experience. In this latest episode, Tom talks about the 6 things that he does throughout his (typical) day to bring a little more pep-in-his-step and also feel a better sense of balance (control!!) in his professional (and personal) life. It's that time of year again! And no, we're not talking about Peppermint Mocha season or (our favorite!) more Pumpkin Spice! It's time for your 2021 Year in Review! Most tech professionals only think about the business stuff when they think about the previous 12 months and looking ahead to the next calendar year. Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry ADDS to that framework with additional (easy!) stuff to ensure you're thinking about your entire self in this important exercise. Tom will also highlight his insights for 2021 using the framework so you can get to know him even better heading into the new year. It's the first Friday of the month, and you know what that means ... Jobs Report! The October 2021 data was released and to sum-up the results in one word: Progress. Strong number of jobs added to the US economy last month & August + September numbers were modified upward. The unemployment rate decreased as well. But there's still work to be done - the economy still has 4M+ jobs to fill to compare to where we were in February 2020. In this special edition of the Engaged Pursuit podcast, founder Tom Perry highlights the specifics of the October 2021 jobs report and gives his insights into the market - what he's see and how he's responding to the question, "So what's it REALLY like out there??" from clients and organizational leaders. 2021 is quickly coming to a close. Q4 results are coming in. Performance Reviews are (probably) coming up. A time for reflection around what you've accomplished and what the new year might bring. For many clients, it's also a time to be thinking about something new. Especially if it's been a rough year and you're feeling "stuck" the last couple months of the calendar year can bring thoughts of exploration, change, and excitement. But looking for something new goes beyond updating your resume or getting your Linked-In in order. There's much more "art" in this process as compared to "science." In this latest episode of the Engaged Pursuit podcast, founder Tom Perry highlights his best practices when thinking about something new and how to approach the process from a human, selfish (in a good way) perspective. For most tech organizations, the performance review happens in early Spring. Even though this timeline is usually set-in-stone, employees are often surprised by how quickly important dates (and deliverables) creep-up. The Fall is a great time to check-in on how you're doing and be more proactive about the crucial parts of the performance process. It's more than just knowing what you did and the impact that you had on the bottom-line. Often, there's a ton of thought, discussion, and presentation of your work to important stakeholders. Stuff you don't want to wait until the last minute to tackle. In this episode of the Engaged Pursuit Podcast, founder Tom Perry highlights his Top 6 Tips-And-Tricks to implement during the Fall months to ensure your Spring 2022 performance review is seamless (and hopefully spectacular). Whether you're in tech with tons of process or in a small company with more informal performance conversations, this episode is for you! Engaged Pursuit: Your Story. We're hearing it a lot from clients - this time of year sucks! Whether you're looking for something new, getting ready to close the 4th quarter or starting the process of your 2021 Performance Review (more on this next week...), there's a lot going on! We could all use a sanity check right about now ... and (more importantly) some stuff to take our minds off things ... in this latest episode, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry highlights his favorite books, podcasts, articles, streaming content, and meditations to keep you smiling (and a little less stressed) moving into the end of the calendar year. Stakeholders play a super important part of the tech professional experience. Especially if you're in a larger, global organization, these folks can make-or-break your projects, initiatives, and (most importantly) your performance review. These are individuals who you don't work directly for, but play a role in your world - think team leaders, important partners, etc. Partnering with these folks can sometimes be weird - you don't have a formal professional relationship, but you still have to show-up well consistently. A lot harder to do - especially in complex, global organizations. Founder Tom Perry has worked with stakeholders across the globe and knows a thing-or-two about how these partnerships work. Get his Top 6 Tips-and-Tricks to ensure your relationship(s) with stakeholders start-off well and maintain for the long-term! Have a stakeholder partnership you're nervous about? Tons of tech organizations identify three ingredients to a successful professional experience: 1. Have impact 2. Have a Career Plan (easier said than done for the majority of folks) and 3. Have a good relationship with your boss. But what about those co-workers who you're working with day-in-and-day-out? Those individuals, in our experience, can make-or-break unity and/or engagement in the organization. Today, founder Tom Perry talks about his Top 6 ways to ensure these crucial relationships start (and stay!) on track ... even when disagreements in style (or personality) come-up. Relationships are key to the Professional Experience . Especially in tech, where the environment is intense, performance metrics are high, and options for future success (or failure) can shift from one day to the next. The most important relationship is that between the employee and the (direct) manager. Whether you're early in your career or reporting directly to the CEO, this partnership can make-or-break your career. Not to be too dramatic - it's true! And, unfortunately, this is a relationship that most professionals don't think about enough. They assume good intent, they let the manager lead, and leave the rest to fate. Not a good way to manage a career or ensure professional engagement. In this latest "Fall Re-Boot" episode, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry highlights his Top 6 tips-and-tricks to ensure this super important partnership starts-off on the right foot, continues to work for YOU, and discusses tactics if/when this relationship goes off-track. Have a sticky manager relationship you're working through? Send Tom an email (tom@engagedpursuit.com) or text (206.369.3124) to discuss options to get in a better place. Engaged Pursuit: Your Story. You've heard of Spring Cleaning ... what about Fall Organization?? Could we make that a new thing for tech professionals? It's funny - tech folks are either HIGHLY organized (filed every email from 2004) or INCREDIBLY unorganized (can't find any emails from 2021). The solution is probably somewhere in between ... But how do you stay mentally organized to ensure professional success and engagement? There's lots of ways to optimize your inbox or create a folder system, but how do you ensure you're showing-up and staying organized as a HUMAN each day? Glad you asked... In this latest episode of the Engaged Pursuit podcast, Founder Tom Perry highlights his Top 6 ways of getting (& staying!) organized mentally each day. You'll hear some stuff he loves (get up early!!) as well as some new stuff - all with the intention to get you feeling better about the work you're doing each-and-every-day. September ... Ugh! It's the month EVERYONE is back in the (virtual) office. Summer breaks are over. Kids are headed back to school. Third quarter results are close. The Fourth Quarter is right around the corner. The theme for the month: T - U - R - B - O. Staying engaged professionally is tough during this time of year. Especially in 2021. Having a check-list of the realities of this month, what to do to prepare for the ups-and-downs, and how to think about the future is crucial to success this month (and the rest of the year). In this latest episode, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry shares his Top 6 Tips-and-Tricks for getting through these challenging weeks (especially the week after Labor Day!) and feeling strong about your professional experience. We're continuing these best practices each week for the next couple months. In a shorter, easier to consume format, we'll be talking about the stuff that's important this time of year: staying organized, getting ready for your performance review, getting better balance approaching the holidays, and making sure your professional relationships are on-point. It seems like everyone is asking the same question - when are tech employees headed back to the office?? Some companies have already started the process (10% here, 15% there...), and most are giving employees a "Fall 2021" return date (fingers crossed). Most professionals are both nervous and excited about a potential return to a formal office environment. Excited to see everyone, but nervous about falling into the same routine and/or showing-up in the same way... Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry highlights his take on this huge opportunity. Being away for the past 16+ months has been tough and coming back presents a big opportunity to re-invent (or double-down on) your Career Path. Headed back to the office and feeling scared? Ahhhhh graduation season! Finals week is over, hats are decorated, socially-distanced audience tickets are ordered and the real-world awaits ... gulp! If you're like most professionals, the first thing you think about when making a potential shift w/ your career is "How am I going to update my resume??" Well, if you're like most professionals, you THINK about this, but don't actually DO much to change your resume's current content. Am I right?? Well, that's a big no-no! Updating your resume to tell your Professional Story in a different way is crucial if you are looking to make a big professional change. Recruiters and Hiring Managers don't know where you want to go (or why), so the resume is one way to TELL them what you're looking to accomplish in this new world and why you'd make a great fit for their organization. This is tough work. It's a ton of art and a little science too. It's a fact: 2021 is all about CHANGE. Change in how we work. Change in how we interact with others. Change in priorities. Change in what you're doing?? Many professionals are asking themselves a simple question - Is it time for me to make a big change professionally? For those who answer yes, the usual path is typical for a "Type-A" person: Get your resume updated, tweak Linked In, and apply apply apply apply apply apply. Shaking your head in agreement? Thought so... There's a better way to ensure success if you know change is needed for your professional experience - start with the foundational elements (way upstream) to help define where you're going downstream. We know what's coming in 2021 - Tons of change! Can you just feel it?? Often professionals love the concept of change, but have difficulty getting ahead of (and taking advantage of) change. With change comes new opportunities, new skills, new relationships, new experiences, and possibly a new YOU. Special (Sunday) Edition of The Engaged Pursuit Podcast. In this recording, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry covers two topics: (1) the December 2020 unemployment numbers released on Friday and (2) the impact of the events from 1/6/2021 on himself, his company, and all of you. Engaged Pursuit was horrified by the events of last week. The overt insurrection and racism demonstrated by the mob created terror and was a direct threat to our democracy. Now more than ever, we must define what is important to us and live true to our values - personally, professionally, and now (more than ever) politically. Engaged Pursuit is committed to helping individuals and organizations not only define this for themselves, but also get clarity on how to demonstrate it to benefit our society. Engaged Pursuit: Your Story. Your Career.
We've all been waiting for it ... big change in 2021. From the way we work, to how we talk to customers, to the methods of leading teams, to getting the heck off Zoom (sorry, Zoom...) we know these next 12 months are going to be BIG. Organizations talk a lot about change (commonly referred to as "change management"), but we'd argue that the everyday employee doesn't really know how to manage lots of change (let alone thrive in it). Often, professionals are flat-footed during times of change and/or miss-out on opportunities for impact because they are not in-front of new ways of doing business. Until now ... In this first episode of season two of The Engaged Pursuit Podcast, founder Tom Perry talks about the ways YOU (as the everyday employee) should start thinking about change, and what YOU can do to get ahead of what's coming in 2021. He was inspired by his own journey for change moving into the new calendar year as well as a Gartner survey recently released on the big HR/Leadership priorities for 2021. In this final of our three-part series on your upcoming Performance Review, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry highlights his recommendations for having a meaningful and confident Performance Review with your Manager. These conversations are hard. You've done the prep (foundational) work, you have a document that highlights both the "what" and the "how" ... now, it's time to actually have the discussion with your Manager (gulp). And probably over Zoom (double gulp). Performance Reviews are a discussion and are more forward looking than you might think. You also might get asked for Manager feedback and what you're looking for next in your Career. Don't worry - we've got you covered in this latest episode of the Engaged Pursuit podcast. Tune in next week (last week of 2020), where Tom will record his learnings from 2020 and talks about his predictions for 2021. He'll also include his favorite books, articles, podcasts, and music from the last 12 months. Whether you use a corporate template or not, articulating your yearly Performance Review in the written form can be really challenging. Where do you even start and what type of information should you include? We are glad you asked! Telling your Story in your Performance Review is crucial (and really difficult). You will use this to talk about yourself in your Performance Review (more on this next week) and your Manager will (most likely) use this in their decision(s) around how you delivered results in 2020. Whether you've completed your Performance Review a thousand times or are just starting out - these best practices will ensure you are documenting your year as clearly and confidently as possible. Yes, that's possible - even in 2020! Next week, Tom will finish this Performance Review series and discuss tips & tricks around the actual Performance Review conversation (gulp)! How to articulate your results and answer questions that might come-up around Career or Feedback for your Manager. Have someone in your life who could use the gift of Engaged Pursuit? Hourly 1:1 gifts are available, so email Tom (tom@engagedpursuit.com) if you are interested in learning more. 2021 is going to be BIG, so start off the year with a solid foundation to an Engaged Pursuit! The end of the calendar year is almost here! What does that mean for you? No, not more episodes of "The Bachelorette" or "The Crown" (although those are lovely)... It's the start of Performance Review season (for many of you)! In this first of a series of episodes, Engaged Pursuit Tom Perry talks about the foundational elements of this very important time-of-year. He highlights some of the basics around this process (it's mostly art and limited science), the logistics around this time (know your important dates!), and conversations that will probably also come-up as you discuss your performance (did somebody say "Manager Feedback??"). In the next couple weeks, Tom will also talk about the specific elements of the "Performance Review Kit" (what you need to prepare as you get ready for your Performance Review), how to think about the actual Performance Review conversation, and what to do AFTER you're done with the discussion. Raise your hand if you've worked with (or working with) a crappy Manager? Everyone's hands in the air? Thought so... While the vast majority of professionals begin the relationship with their managers with the best of intent, sometimes the partnership goes off-track. Smaller stuff happens (1:1 meetings are cancelled (often), feedback becomes "blah," ghosting, etc) as well as bigger stuff (values conflict, behavior shifts, surprises, etc). When patterns start and/or the relationship isn't working anymore, what are professionals to do? How can they stay true to themselves (and their careers) while addressing these concerns? Glad you asked. In this episode, Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry outlines his best practices for addressing both the "small stuff" as well as the "big stuff" when Manager relationships go off-track. Bottom line - this is hard, but the VAST majority of professionals are dealing with these issues each-and-every-day. Need help thinking through your particular situation?
