Robert Kraybill is a well-known name in the impact investment space who has created innovative financial products that channel capital into improving livelihoods across emerging markets, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. But his journey didn't start there.Robert's first big career move was at Morgan Stanley. Fresh out of Princeton, he was ready to take on the world of investment banking. But before he even made it to his orientation session, he met Durreen Shahnaz – the woman who would later become his wife and, more importantly for this story, the founder of Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) and a global leader in social impact investing.  Starting as a banker at Morgan Stanley, Robert later led investment banking for Wasserstein Perella & Co. in Singapore and then transitioned to private equity at Marathon Asset Management, focusing on the Asia-Pacific region. Then came 2008. The financial crisis hit, and Robert saw firsthand that it "exposed the hollow promise of traditional finance's claim to make the world better through efficient capital allocation." He knew there had to be a better way. So, he pivoted – to impact investing.Fast forward to today, and he's Chief Investment Officer at IIX, a Singapore-based enterprise that helps mission-driven businesses grow and scale their positive impact. In their words, they “build pathways to connect backstreets of underserved communities to the Wall Streets of the world”. Alongside his wife, he is transforming financial systems and developing innovative solutions that drive women's empowerment, climate action, and community resilience. Through IIX and the IIX Foundation, their work has mobilized over $250 million in private-sector investment and positively impacted more than 100 million people worldwide. His team pioneered the Women's Livelihood Bond (WLB) series, a first-of-its-kind financial product that channels investment into women-focused enterprises across emerging markets. But they didn't stop there. After proving the success of the Women's Livelihood Bonds, they created Orange Bonds – an investment framework designed to standardize and scale gender-lens investing, just like Green Bonds did for climate finance. In this episode, Robert takes us through the evolution of the WLB Series and the birth of Orange Bonds. He also explains the mechanics of blended finance – where catalytic capital de-risks investments to attract large-scale institutional funding. We also talk about IIX's Values Impact Measurement Tool, their Risk-Return-Impact philosophy, and their ambitious goal: creating one billion sustainable livelihoods by 2030.Join us to discover why the future of impact investing isn't just green – it's turning orange.—About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. Featured Musician: Tree City THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things said.] --------------------- 1. Ohio State Preview: Offense starts at the top Is Howard any better than Kyle McCord? Because McCord was actually really good in The Game last year. How Chip Kelly is the running game? How Ryan Day are they on 3rd & 3? Injuries to the offensive line have drawn in a couple of guards who weren't expected to play yet, put Carson Hinzman back at C and kicked Donovan Jackson out to left tackle, but these are first-world problems. Jeremiah Smith's freshman eligibility is a global problem. Emeke Egbuka is a dangerous slot weapon that wasn't fully utilized until he got to play there. 2. Ohio State Preview: Defense starts at 18:02 They brought back almost everybody and added the #1 transfer in the portal, meaning 5-star Sonny Styles is now at WLB for new Bandit uber 5-star Caleb Downs. Not as relevant that you can block JT Tuimolaoau and Jack Sawyer and survive because Evan Link isn't blocking those guys. Lathan Ransom has been a superstar at Adjuster safety for them. Weakness is the cornerbacks get left in man and are not elite—a weakness that Michigan is in a particularly bad position to exploit. 3. Basketball vs Xavier and Virginia Tech starts at 35:17 They faced a switching team and switched Everything! On-ball defense was brilliant in both games. Coming from guys we expected and from guys we didn't expect. Offensively they can find a guy (Gayle vs VT, Wolf vs Xavier) to keep them going until they get good at their offense, but that's coming too and you can see it in Vlad's usage. Seth wants an NIL program to pay Vlad $1000 per dunk and subtract $100 for every shot missed at the rim that's not a dunk. 4. Recruiting starts at 54:36 Underwood's arm strength is THERE but he varies his angles and speed, and that's why there's a hitch. His movement is also THERE: breakaway speed to extend plays. Seth runs us through guys to pay attention to down the stretch. See you next time for our live Signing Day show. About the Featured Artist: Tree City I call them 7, 3, and 4. [photo: Benjamin Weatherston] Those of you who've been paying attention know we always have a little surprise for The Game, but this one surprised even me. Nadim got in touch with local legend/Michigan grad Evan Haywood just in time to get us a preview of Tree City's highly anticipated next album "Pure Levels." For those who are tapped into the Ann Arbor music scene, you're going "Holy shit they got a copy of Tree City's new album!???" (it won't be released until December 13). For the rest (vast majority) of you: Tree City is a hip-hop collective from Ann Arbor that formed in 2005 and quickly became an integral part of the local scene. Three original members remain: Haywood ("Clavius Crates"), Kyle Hunter ("Silas Green"), and Jacoby Simmons ("DJ Cataclysmic") along with Charles Cheek ("Cheeks"), who joined in 2008. It's a big deal because we haven't had a Tree City release since their critically acclaimed "Thus Far" back in 2010, meaning the entirety of the Hoke and Harbaugh eras went by with people wondering when these guys are going to make another. Haywood calls "Pure Levels" the… magnum opus of homegrown hip-hop, over a decade in the making. It promises to be the definitive statement from several of the finest lyricists ever to emerge from Michigan. Their sound is intellectual, futuristic, and—IMO—a little bit jazzy in the way they quote and reference. It's fun and danceable stuff, but the lyrics are the thing. If you like grounded philosophy in your hip-hop this is the hip-hop for you. Songs: Love Hotels (produced by Dykehouse) Story 2 Story (Dykehouse) Raspberry Balm (produced by Vulfpeck) Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken down, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

Featured Musicians: Lanternfly The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things to be said.] --------------------- 1. USC: Offense starts at the top They have TALENT at wide receiver, and the guy who developed four of the NFL's starting quarterbacks has a next guy who seems to be able to play air raid. LSU went man on them and got beat by the receivers making plays. Can Michigan's defense, designed to stop CJ Stroud, do the trick? Will depend on Wink confusing Moss and Moss not confusing Wink's linebackers. 2. USC: Defense starts at 20:44 A lot of transfers for a new defense. Finally somebody else is running Amoeba and their linebackers are grading out poorly in charting because that job is hard. Haven't faced an Orji offense yet but neither have we run an Orji offense. They have talent in the secondary but front seven are mostly guys. Interesting 6'6" linebacker at WLB who's there to be a DE or a safety or an end or a tight end eraser. SDE was Don Brown's top anchor target once upon a time. 3. Gimmicky Top Five: Halftime Events Sponsored by Our Advertisers starts at 37:09 Reid McCarthy of Ann Arbor Elder Law felt called out when we mentioned him in the same breath as the Purdue auto dealership that tried to cheat a student kicker out of his 2-year lease, so he came on the show for a segment on our ideas (some of them good!) for sponsored halftime entertainment. 4. Arkansas State After Review starts at 56:17 It doesn't seem Orji and Crippen are a panacea, but if you're struggling at quarterback when you're running simple things you might as well put in the guy who can run. Crippen wasn't meaningfully better than Giudice; Mullings is meaningfully better than Donovan Edwards. But consider: Edwards can turn every play into a TD. Defensively Wink backed off. I crunched RPS numbers and found that new coordinators from the NFL think they have to playcall their way to victory—things are a lot smoother when you just play your defense. About the Featured Musician: Lanternfly THE BAND: Longtime MGoBlog reader Keith Salowich formed this intellectual pop punk outfit right before the world went and had its global pandemic. They reformed with a new lineup in spring of 2023 and put out their first single "No Vacancy" last February, with their first EP "Until There's Nothing Left Alive" following in June. Oddly for a pop punk outfit the drummer has real chops, while both Keith and Angie Salowich are gifted lyricists. Two shows coming up: Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Parts and Labor in Melvindale with the bands I Are Citizen, Scum Queens, and Kids on Fire (they're on tour from Seattle). Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at Bowlero in Royal Oak (and people had better show up in Halloween costumes) with Social Meteor. Music starts at 9 p.m. Song choices: "No Plans" "No Vacancy"    "Vicious Fishes" Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

Featured Musicians: 8-Bit Big Band The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things said.] --------------------- 1. Ohio State After Review starts at the top. Defensively it was an NFL game. Michigan unleashed a dizzying array of coverages to hide McCord's leverage from him, and Ryan Day had all kinds of motions and switches to uncover it. The game turned on Mason Graham, who allowed Michigan to keep the pressure on McCord and play with an extra defender in the secondary because OSU could not run on him. Hutchinson-level? Not yet, but Hutchinson before his injury in 2020, where this guy is an All-American. Rod Moore was back to himself. Sainristil isn't a vet at outside cornerback, McBurrows is a good nickel. Offensively there was a lot left on the table. Michigan maximized its RPS wins, Corum's run was RPS+1 but also the biggest play in Michigan football history? JJ almost had a TD on the throwback to Johnson, who didn't recognize he had a Daylen Baldwin opportunity. Run game limited because Tyliek Williams played out of his mind. Going to be a negative in the run game charting for the first time in years, Barnhart especially. But he was their best in pass pro. Do. Not. Leave. JTT. Unblocked. 2. Iowa Preview: Offense starts at 22:44 Abominable, worst in the Power 5. Their receivers are a bad match for their QB, who needs a big target more than a good route. Injured TEs and OL who run a lot of stretch and counter trey: the kind of team Michigan should be best able to defend. Mitigator: Michigan likes to leave their safeties back and subject their DTs to doubles, while teams have been suffocating Iowa specifically because you can bring down your safeties and their RB will break a tackle for 50 yards once every three games. 3. Iowa Preview: Defense starts at 36:59 Excellent as always, with a lot more talent than we're used to. Five-star safety is playing like one, safety-ish linebacker from Virginia is athletic and their best pass-rusher. Plus the usual array of Iowa types. We wonder if their big-butted WLB is grading out so well (87 to PFF, over 90 in coverage) because he's more than a match for Big Ten West competition, but will get dusted if he has to keep up with Donovan Edwards. Missing Cooper DeJean but CBs have been fine. Again: competition question mark, and their DL isn't great at pass-rushing, so there's an opportunity for explosives except they take that away by playing soft cover 2. If they do that Michigan will have to grind them down like last year, but can they without Zinter? Their punter is incredible. Their backup kicker had to kick the game-winner against Nebraska. 4. The Other Conference Championships + Playoff Talk starts at 56:41 We go in order, starting with Washington-Oregon, which is not a 10-point game like Vegas has it. Oregon has been playing fantastic of late and Washington keeps needing to TCU its way through Pac-12 teams. But remember back when they played Washington had that game until Oregon surged back. Texas-Oklahoma State is the biggest spread, want to root for our old friend at QB but also rooting for Texas to get in to keep out the unwanted SEC teams and Ohio State. Georgia could lose to Bama, which is chaos, and we talk more about the committee's choices than the game. FSU beating Louisville would mean FSU goes ahead of any 1-loss team, and if Georgia complains about getting Oregon as the 4-seed they should pound sand. We don't believe in conspiracies; the committee cares about who wins the games, not what ESPN talking heads say to prop up the SEC. A Playoff without any SEC teams would be right, glorious, and absolutely deserved. About the Featured Musician: 8-BIT BAND We're back to letting Seth pick out the songs, so I'm going to nerd out and show you what I've been writing to for a lot of the year. It is this 25+ member orchestra of amazing jazz musicians who come together off their various projects to compose and produce big band versions of videogame music from our childhoods. I could describe further but Adam Neely, who's one of my favorite video essayists (one of the people worth getting a Nebula subscription for), has a 30-minute video on it. He also plays bass. The 8-Bit Band is playing December 15th at Sony Hall in New York, and January 13th at the Ferguson Center in Newport News. Song choices: Chrono Trigger Main Theme Bob-Omb Battlefield Still Alive Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

"I need more balance in my life!" It's something we hear from our tech clients all the time. Especially over the past 2+ years, professionals are constantly looking for ways to feel more in-control of their experience. The issue? Most folks go BIG when creating strategies to create more WLB. Stuff like "exercising more" or "no phone after 7pm" or "Email doesn't exist on the weekend!" And, with most things, it's good for a couple weeks and then ... well, let's just say our behavior mirrors New Years Resolutions... But what if there was a better, easier way to tackle this balance issue? Engaged Pursuit founder Tom Perry has found one (easy) way to try to improve balance - and that's to incorporate a little more fun into his daily experience. In this latest episode, Tom talks about the 6 things that he does throughout his (typical) day to bring a little more pep-in-his-step and also feel a better sense of balance (control!!) in his professional (and personal) life. Have additional ways that you are incorporating more fun in your life? In this episode of the Financial Griot, the crew discusses work-life balance or lack there of. The last few months have been tough and filled with challenges and competing interests. Ironically, it's kinda of always been this way. On top of that, these challenges are both necessary and unavoidable on the path of changes. Not going to lie to you, it's hard out here but you have to learn and adapt to beat the odds.In short, work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one's career and the demands of one's personal life. As such, Work-Life balance is an enduring cycle, not an achievement nor the finish line.  Studies and Research on Post Pandemic Work-Life BalanceTo explore this question, 200 in-depth interviews with 78 professionals found that the majority of the interviewees described their jobs as highly demanding, exhausting, and chaotic. They seemed to take for granted that working long hours was necessary for their professional success. However, about 30% of the men and 50% of women appeared to consciously resist working long hours, describing a variety of strategies they developed for maintaining a healthier work-life balance. While the details of every individual case differed, the study suggested a common mental process that consistently helped this group of professionals to change the way they worked — and lived — for the better. The coronavirus pandemic has interrupted labor markets, triggering massive and instant series of experimentation with flexible work arrangements, and new relationships to centralized working environments. These approaches have laid the basis for the “new normal,” likely extending into the organization of work in the post-pandemic era. These new arrangements, especially flexible work arrangements, have challenged traditional relationships with employees and employers, work time and working hours, the work–life balance (WLB), and the relationship of individuals to work.  Detailed show notes, www.theneighborhoodfinanceguy.com About Us:The Financial Griot is a play on two words (Finance + Griot) that hold significance in closing the wealth gap while embracing our differences. Defensive Line starts at 1:00 The tackles are deeper and the ends are amazing, with all kinds of interesting new depth. Kwity Paye is the #1 freak of the year, and Aiden Hutchinson is the guy we think might be a 1st or 2nd rounder next year. So why are we so afraid? Oh right, because last year they were playing Carlo Kemp at nose and Jess Speight when they didn't have Kemp. [The rest of the writeup and the player after The Jump] 2. Linebackers starts at 26:12 A wildman and the safe man. Josh Ross looked good at WLB before looking not as good (against Wisconsin) at MLB then spending the year redshirting. Cam McGrone done busted out and is Bush if Bush wasn't born a savant. We expect Michael Barrett to take over the Viper spot, and be the backup WLB, but things get interesting when you imagine how Solomon figures into that. 3. Secondary starts at 44:17 Oh dear. We recorded this before Faustin and Dax flipped who's getting tried at cornerback but the fear still applies. Not that we need to fear all of it, if Seth would stop reminding us that Ohio State gets to feast on them again this year. Clone Dax Hill. 4. Dallas Cowboys rumors today focus on big-names like Randy Gregory, CeeDee Lamb and Jaylon Smith. But there’s also a Cowboys trade rumor on Jaylen Samuels and discussion on a Cowboys record prediction. The Cowboys got CeeDee Lamb in the NFL Draft but the hype train has already gotten out of control. Michael Irvin is hyping up Lamb at a pace that, frankly, doesn’t help the rookie WR. Speaking of Lamb - get his jersey for under $80 right now: http://chatsports.com/ceedeejersey/ Cowboys news on Randy Gregory, who remains in NFL limbo. He’s not been reinstated yet, but hasn’t been told ‘no’ yet either. And he’s taking out his frustrations on Twitter with his NFLPA rep. Jaylon Smith is switching to the WLB spot, which means he might be blitzing more. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell says the Cowboys are likely going to improve this season. And Cowboys Report host Tom Downey completely agrees because he’s said this for months now! The Cowboys might have gone 8-8 last year, but they should be expecting a better result this year. Cowboys rumors also include trading for Jaylen Samuels, the Steelers RB, which makes sense in light of the Jamize Olawale opt-out. But what would be the trade value and cost? There’s also the question of the biggest concern for the Cowboys - which is at CB. Here’s the full list of Cowboys Rumors: - Cowboys Set To Improve? - Cowboys Record Prediction? - CeeDee Lamb Hype Train Out Of Control? - Trade For Jaylen Samuels? - Randy Gregory Still In Limbo? - Jaylon Smith Blitzing More? - Corner Biggest Concern? Work Life Balance je na prvý pohľad rovnicou o dvoch neznámych. Ako sa tejto náročnej úlohy zhostiť, to si povieme v druhej časti podcastu Work Life Balance. The post WLB #02: Ako dosiahnuť pohodu v práci appeared first on Work Life Balance.

My podcast this week is with a former colleague and friend Luis Esteban (LinkedIn). Not often do I ask colleagues to be on the podcast, but after meeting Luis Esteban last year, we just hit it off and have so many things in common. Luis is now CEO of Initiative Spain, and I moved on too. His Twitter handle is @lesteban   In wake of the Corona Virus, we actually recorded this episode only last week. It hangs over us, yet we are focusing on leadership in unprecedented times as well as his mantra, ‘be a warrior’.   His bio reads like a dream profile of a successful entrepreneur and business person: Digital CEO with Entrepreneur Spirit, Loves Mobile, E-Commerce & Social Media. Now in the Performance and Direct Response world (Programatic, Search, SEO and Social PPC). He was awarded as Executive of the Year 2018 in the Bing Europe and APAC Awards amongst 700 agency contenders and he was twice (!) included in the 100 Most Influential Under40 in Spain by GQ.   Luis latest challenge moves him into TV as well, which in Spain is still a huge media channel, and will be moving digital at some point. However, whilst we start off on digital marketing, I guess that’s where we met, for him it is all about having fun at work and being happy; balancing his life.   His leadership is about enabling the right people around him, to make them successful, whether that is within his organisation or outside. This leads the conversation to different generations in the workplace, and what millennials want from the workplace versus the older generation. This ties in with the new regulations of working from home or working remotely due to the ongoing global crisis.   Luis has been very successful in his career, and no doubt this will continue. However, he is very humble about it. So he boils it down to respect, being humble, and working with talented people. He is very positive and has a very forward looking, positive outlook on life which helped him to be successful. However, he warns to not confuse this with being naive but being pro-active or positive.   My main take away from the conversation is that you should be in it for the long run. Of course you have to do your job, but be patient and persevere and you will reach the level you were meant to reach. It’s all about hard work and a long term view, having a long term career plan. Being able to coach millennials and staff in general seems to become more and more important.   Luis quotes Microsoft’s CEO Nadella stating that the biggest influence on business is: empathy. It goes in line with my previous podcast on Compassionate Leadership. The use of EQ (emotional intelligence), compassion, and empathy in the workplace is key. Showing this in times of these, where we are separated by screens, and cannot socialise directly, it is something we should encourage in the ‘remote workplace’ situation. Luis has already had a virtual beer and lunch, why not? We are all in the same boat, and isolation can lead to mental health challenges. Let’s combat this now.   At the end of the podcast we touch on WLB (work life balance) and how it is important to have the right people around him at home, similar to work. He praises his wife for her support and having his balanced family life with his three children. His advice is to leave all business at the doorstep and come into the house and focus on your family only. I guess another challenge in terms of working remotely. We touch on hobbies and making the most of the time you gain by not commuting, and keeping up the social spirit. #BeaWarrior   This podcast is hosted by Volker Ballueder (Ballueder Partners), a trusted advisor, business consultant and mindfulness trainer.   Volker wrote a book on productivity and life improvement #BeBetter. He launched his bestselling book Principles for Success, based on the interviews on this podcast, in 2019.  If you are interested in working with Volker Ballueder as an advisor, coach or consultant, please reach out to him via email (volker@ballueder.com).

The thing about Murderwolf is he doesn’t party under overpasses. Special Guests: Greg Dooley, program writer, Michigan uniform know-it-all, and Dude of MVictors, and Craig Ross, 3,000-year-old druid. The Sponsors We can do this because people support us. You should support them! The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, who are the living embodiments of the Pitbull philosophy. Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Peak Wealth Management, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, FuegoBox, and Perrin Brewing -------------------------------------------- [After THE JUMP: A real good time.] 1. History of Army-Michigan and Herbert O. Crisler wsg Greg Dooley starts at 1:00 The first year of the modern winged helmet. Fritz Crisler arrived and helped to spur the development of platoon football. Army and Michigan played football in Yankee Stadium. Army weaponized the use of the draft to build an unstoppable college football team and also were among the first teams to use substitutions in college football. Brian thinks that the FCS should eliminate substitutions again. Crisler was a Chicago guy, got his nickname from Amos Alonzo Stagg himself. The 1945 sophomore class that made up much of the team became national champions as seniors in 1947, while Army won a disputed national championship in ’45. 2. MTSU Recap wsg Craig Ross starts at 32:28 Michigan could have run arc read keeper on every play and have won easily. Was probably a weird outlier to forget about going forward. Play calling for the passing offense was finally linked to the run offense. A few really nice RPO’s. A bit of Big Ten West discussion: Hunter Johnson looked very bad for Northwestern but they’re not on Michigan’s schedule so it doesn’t matter. Teams that schedule legit FCS schools (like Minnesota) don’t get enough credit. Craig still likes Wisconsin. Vincent Gray needs to work on not getting eliminated from the play when blocked. Charbonnet displayed the whole package. Turner had a good game too. The receivers have to get used. McKeon seems promising. Craig likes Shea’s accuracy but not his decision making. Ben Mason is not ready for big time. Josh Uche needs to play. Jordan Glasgow was a guy you wanted to seize the job of WLB and he looked like he did it. There’s a spot for Dax Hill on this defense and hopefully he seizes it. The defense is far more diverse than last season. 3. Army Preview wsg Craig Ross starts at 1:09:59 Brian finally reveals that Pitbull content origin. Army will not be fun this weekend. They build their offense around consistently getting 3 yards. They convert almost every fourth down but if you get them in 3rd and long, it’s over. Army is built for upsets by limiting possessions, but they still need to get a little lucky. Michigan’s offense should score on every drive in this game. The spread (Michigan -22) doesn’t feel off, but there is a real chance of nervousness. Michigan hired Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator as an analyst for this game. Army is going to blitz a lot because they’re undersized. Seth likes their other LB more than the captain.. 4. Why Pitbull? starts at 1:28:23 A very short segment. MUSIC: Every week on MGoRadio we feature a different local or friendly band. This week we’re honored to have Duke Charrell from Parliament Funkadelic (George Clinton’s band). Check out Duke’s stuff on Spotify. Apparently all the guys from Parliament Funkadelic are from Michigan, most are huge Michigan fans, and they all funk around with their own stuff. If you’d like your band featured on here, reach out. “Fire & Lightning” “Liquid Galaxies (Grains of Sand)” “Wave (End Game)” “Across 110th Street”

Was bedeutet Arbeit für dich? This is a short work week due to the Labor Day Holiday. People are slammed, trying to get work done and the children back to school...and everything else. Someone said their short week felt more like a punishment requiring them to work even longer hours. Conversations have turned to the mythic Work-Life Balance. Where did this come from? This term was coined around 1986. Men and women of color and white women had begun making serious inroads into the professional workforce. The country had been experiencing a depressed economy and people were working longer hours to try to get ahead. Added to this, workforce reductions caused people to work even longer hours. Workers balked at complaining over the extended work weeks for fear that they'd wind up on the chopping block. There was a heady mix of increased worker productivity, advances in technology, stepped-up globalization, and more people in the workplace that went into the RIF brew. I remember taking a group of managers off into the "wilderness" (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin) to meet in groups and discuss our personal mission statements. Sounds nice, but the gathered managers and key employees were left wondering: How do achieve that much vaunted "balance" when my evaluation depends on producing results (no matter how long I have to work to get them). Added to the mix is the trend for performance management systems to include evaluation of a worker's work-life balance. Now, I had been in HR for a number of years and I know I didn't have a solid explanation of WLB. As it turned out, no one else did. Seemed kind of pointless. How you think gives an insight to how you work? Even though I'm trained in behavioural science, I'm not a fan of extensive testing in the workplace--mostly because I'm not sure that those tests are valid (measures someting worth measuring) or reliable (consistent application of the measure over time). Taken in broad strokes, humans tend to think and solve problems in two dynamic ways (there are others, but just hang on: we're embarking on a little chat here): linear or serial thinking and non-linear or parallel thinking. In a serial world, a person handles one problem set through to completion. Ask them to take on several projects and you'd be spitting into the wind. Parallel or non-linear thinking and problem solving tends to see people working on several projects at the same time (or moving from project to project). In most companies, we make space for only one kind of thinking: care to guess which one? Does it work? Now, I've met those people who thrive on the energy and drama of a packed schedule. You may like to run from pillar to post with your hair on fire, trailing paper, taking on the cellphone and sliding into a parking space at the gym in just enough time for yoga. You may like being up in the wee hours checking email and crafting a question for your LinkedIn Q&A forum. If that works for you: God love you. Keep on keeping on. There really is no need to force change on a person whose personal system is working. Where we get into trouble is when it no longer serves us: That's when it's time to consider other options and develop other habits. _____________ FOR MORE INFORMATION, TO JOIN THE DISCUSSION FORUM, LISTEN AGAIN OR READ SHOW NOTES Lalita Amos http://www.TotalTeamSolutions.com/podcast/podcasting.htm http://totalteam.blogspot.com 214 615 6505, 3895 for questions or comments
