Microsoft's profits rose 33% in the December quarter as CEO Satya Nadella touted a “second wave of digital transformation." But what does the future really hold for the tech giant? What will be the next big opportunity for Microsoft? And what are the biggest threats it faces? We discuss all of that and more this week with veteran technology journalist and Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley, who writes the All About Microsoft blog for ZDNet. She is the author of “Microsoft 2.0: How Microsoft Plans to Stay Relevant in the Post-Gates Era,” and is also the cohost of the “Windows Weekly” podcast with Paul Thurrott on the TWiT network. Nadella's tenure at Microsoft has brought a new approach, doubling down on the company's traditional strength in enterprise software, pulling of successful acquisitions, and moving the Office productivity platform into a new era with products such as the Microsoft Teams collaboration software. Discussing Microsoft opportunities and potential areas for future acquisitions, Mary Jo points to security and artificial intelligence as two key sectors for the company. She sees Microsoft Teams as another big area of opportunity. The company’s goal is to make Teams into even more of a platform -- an operating system for work, essentially. One open question: How can Microsoft leverage its momentum with the Xbox game platform to create a stronger benefit for the rest of the company? Microsoft's Project xCloud could be one way, giving the company more of a presence on other platforms. GeekWire's John Cook, citing his son as an example, sees Microsoft's presence in gaming as a long-term benefit to the brand, as the next generation of consumers and IT decision-makers become adults. On the subject of the biggest threats to Microsoft, Mary Jo points out that Google remains a formidable (and perhaps underestimated) rival to Microsoft in cloud productivity software. And then there’s Windows. What’s up with Microsoft’s flagship operating system? Is it truly “back,” as Microsoft would have you believe? Mary Jo has some thoughts … and some doubts. This weekend the Marvel Avengers beta came out for PS4 pre-orders. We got our hands on it and played the full beta. We're happy to say that the results are very positive. It was a ton of fun to step in the shoes of all the Avengers characters and we can't wait to see more from this game. We also literally dove into Fall Guys, the new 60 player game show royale that's taken over the world by storm. We talk about the initial experiences in this innovative new palette cleanser. The big news this week is Dr. Disrespect is back. He's now streaming on YouTube for the time being and amassed 500k viewers in his first stream. It's like he never left. Remedy announces a crossover DLC for Control featuring Alan Wake and then Playstation has a ho-hum State of Play. Apple is also at war with Microsoft as they do what they can to keep xCloud off their App Store. Our discussion this week is on the top 5 games that deserve a sequel. We recap all the games shown off during Sony's latest State of Play video and discuss Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game and Microsoft's Project Xcloud dispute with Apple, plus we also talk Shadow of the Colossus, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and various Xbox Summer Game Fest demos.
One of the last exclusives of this generation has come out this last week: Ghost of Tsushima. It's the next title from Sucker Punch and it features the player in the shoes of Jin saving the island of Tsushima from Mongol invasion. It's a game full of things we've seen before but all done really well while introducing lots of new mechanics that will surely become staples. Brett also talks about his experience playing the raid in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. He goes up against Baal in Project Titan and may not do so well.In our news, Sony has increased production for the PS5 and revealed the first hands-on for the DualSense controller. Xbox on the other hand is not going to have any new exclusives for a few years but they're leaning heavily into Project xCloud making it part of the Game Pass. Metacritic is also holding the reviews for 36 hours to prevent review bombing. Our discussion this week has us preparing for what's to come in 2020. We still don't know all of the exclusives for Xbox or release dates in all titles but we know enough to get hyped. We cover everything going between now and the end of the year. So much excitement!

Welcome to Episode 17! The one where we're still trying to get our groove back... In this episode: Our Geek Question of the Day: Basically it is an extension of how we start every episode... What video games are you playing through currently? As usual, I deep dive into one or two games at a time - for me currently, it is Destiny 2 on the Xbox and the Master Chief Collection on mobile via Project xCloud. For Connor, as usual, it is all over the place! Pokemon, Dragon Question, Assassins Creed, Xbox, Switch, mobile... you name it! In our Roll for Credits segment, we dive into the 2017 Zombie Christmas Musical, Anna and the Apocalypse. Yes, that is what I said. Zombie. Christmas. Musical. Think High School Musical meets Walking Dead. With song and dance. Don't try to figure it out. Just listen. Then watch. Finally, we dive back into one of our favorite games, Superfight! Who would win in a fight between the Grim Reaper with Goblin bombs and a 10-story tall squid witch? Listen in to find out! Also, Burning Man vs. Dexter. Go figure. Thanks for the patience as we're trying to get back in the swing of things! And as always, several chickens were chased, though none were harmed in this episode. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the wake of Microsoft's Project xCloud announcement, James, Matt and Brendan ponder the possibilities for game streaming. While undoubtedly a disruptive force in the games industry, what role will the technology play in Xbox's future - or that of video games in general? We discuss the hurdles that Microsoft - or any would-be streaming service provider - need to overcome to appease consumers and deliver the convenience the public has come to expect from Spotify and Netflix. Plus, we consider the implications for developers and how this might lead to the rise of exclusive titles built specifically for streaming. While Microsoft naturally dominates the conversation, we also touch on EA's streaming ambitions, Google's Project Stream, Nintendo's experiments with streaming Switch titles in Japan, and more. As always, you can find more news, insight and analysis into the world behind video games at www.gamesindustry.biz. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
