(0:00:36) Al: My name is Al. (0:00:38) Codey: and I am Cody. (0:00:40) Al: And we’re here today to talk about Cottagecore Games. (0:00:44) Codey: Woo. (0:00:45) Codey: Whoooo! (0:00:46) Al: This episode, we have a very exciting thing. (0:00:49) Al: It’s not often we get an interview, but the first interview of the year this year (0:00:53) Al: is with the developer of 2024’s The Harvest Season game of the year. (0:01:01) Al: Rusty Retirement, Jordan, the developer of Rusty Retirement, (0:01:05) Al: will be joining us later in the episode to talk about the game and many other things. (0:01:12) Codey: Yeah, we talk, we kind of talk about a couple things. (0:01:12) Al: So we talk about stuff, it is, it is mentioned, and some super exciting secret stuff. (0:01:16) Codey: The game is mentioned though. (0:01:18) Codey: Yeah, it is talked about, which will be revealed in this episode. (0:01:27) Al: Yeah. (0:01:31) Al: So if you’re here just to listen to that, you can see the time in the show notes, (0:01:35) Al: or you can click on the chapter in your podcast episode. (0:01:38) Al: But please do stay around as we talk about the news for this week. (0:01:43) Al: And also, Cody, what have you been up to? (0:01:46) Codey: I have been playing Slay the Spire. (0:01:52) Codey: I haven’t been playing it nearly as much, (0:01:54) Codey: but I did finally beat all of the characters (0:02:00) Codey: and beat like the end game once you– (0:02:04) Codey: and like got credits. (0:02:06) Codey: But it doesn’t really ever end, really. (0:02:08) Codey: You just keep playing. (0:02:10) Codey: But it’s fun. (0:02:12) Codey: doing that, doing more PhD studies. (0:02:16) Codey: It’s like starting to hit me now that like, cause I was talking to my advisor (0:02:20) Codey: and he was like, yeah, so if you’re going to defend in or graduate in December, (0:02:24) Codey: you have to defend in October, which means you should have your data done by (0:02:28) Codey: July. And like, I was just like, Oh, oh gosh, it’s all coming up so fast. (0:02:35) Codey: So yeah, it’s starting to hit. (0:02:38) Codey: Um, and also clearly Rusty’s retirement played a hot minute of that by you. (0:02:38) Al: Fair enough, obviously. (0:02:44) Al: Nice. I think last episode I talked about playing Legends Arceus for the second time, (0:02:51) Al: gone through and caught most of the Pokémon, I was nearly done. I have now finished that, (0:02:56) Al: so that’s that’s done. I’ve got my full Pokémon home decks, got the crown on Pokémon home for (0:03:03) Al: for that. And then I decided to do go from (0:03:08) Al: the best Pokemon game to the worst Pokemon game. And I am now playing Brilliant Diamond (0:03:13) Al: and Shining Pearl again. So it hasn’t, I already, I had a save. I had done a Professor Oak challenge. (0:03:24) Al: So I still had that. However, I didn’t finish, I didn’t keep everything. So there was a bunch (0:03:30) Al: of Pokemon I need to catch and breed and stuff, but it wasn’t too hard, except I am now, I (0:03:36) Al: I now need– (0:03:38) Al: Well, two Pokémon lines, one of which is just a version exclusive, (0:03:44) Al: so I’ve been playing through the other game, Pearl, to get that one. (0:03:47) Al: And I’ve almost got it. I’m almost there. (0:03:49) Al: The other one I need is Palkia, so I do need to finish Pearl till the end. (0:03:54) Al: So I do need to play through that game all the way to the end (0:03:58) Al: and get Palkia and be finished with that. (0:04:00) Codey: I’m sorry. That sounds awful (0:04:03) Al: I do– I feel like I don’t know. (0:04:05) Al: I didn’t, I don’t feel like I hate. (0:04:08) Al: the games when I was playing them, but maybe that rose tinted glasses. (0:04:11) Al: Maybe I did when I was playing it, but they are not great. (0:04:13) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:04:19) Al: I do not miss random encounters in the grass. (0:04:23) Al: I mean, that in and of itself, like I don’t, I don’t want that to ever come back. (0:04:28) Al: I know some people like it. (0:04:29) Al: Whatever. (0:04:29) Al: I don’t, please don’t, please don’t bring it back, please. (0:04:35) Al: and obviously just the thing that annoys me. (0:04:38) Al: most about Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the stickiness. Like if you walk next to a wall (0:04:48) Al: you slow down. I just hate that so much because it’s like especially if you’re going through a (0:04:53) Al: cave and it’s like you happen to brush against a rock and suddenly you’re going at snail space. (0:04:59) Al: It’s just I really hate it. I do hate it so much and I feel like those games could have been a lot (0:05:05) Al: a lot better if there’s just been like a few decisions made. (0:05:08) Al: I could have dealt with the fact that it was random encounters in the grass right, (0:05:12) Al: like I would have preferred if they’d done something like Let’s Go right like I think (0:05:12) Codey: Yeah. (0:05:16) Al: Let’s Go is one of my favorite games. So if they’d done something like that I would have (0:05:21) Al: been much preferred it but I can understand why they would want to do like let’s keep let’s bring (0:05:26) Al: back the random encounters because that’s what these games were fine but it’s just all the other (0:05:32) Al: decisions that were made. Yeah, not fun. So (0:05:34) Codey: Yeah, I think that was like why I didn’t get them because if I wanted to play Diamond or Pearl, I would play it first like they didn’t change enough to me to make it worth it. (0:05:46) Al: Yeah, are we past the point now where you can just remake a game? Like, red and blue, (0:06:00) Al: when they were remade into Fire Red and Leaf Cream, I think that needed to happen, right? (0:06:05) Al: To make those games fun. Because those games were so, like, they were obviously really (0:06:10) Al: complicated and difficult for what they were at the time, and they were running on like (0:06:14) Al: of shoes. (0:06:16) Al: The company nearly folded multiple times before they got those games out. (0:06:20) Al: And so I think it makes absolute sense to redo those. (0:06:23) Al: I think HeartGold and SoulSilver, whether you like those games or not, I think did a (0:06:28) Al: lot to those games and made them better in a lot of ways. (0:06:33) Al: I personally really like what they did with Oras. (0:06:36) Al: I liked how they did that in the 3D style. (0:06:43) Al: And then let’s score, I think is. (0:06:46) Al: One of their best, I think it’s their best remake full stop. (0:06:48) Al: I think it’s amazing what they did with it. (0:06:50) Al: They took what was the original games and made it different. (0:06:54) Al: I really like that. (0:06:57) Al: And even if they’d done Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as Platinum, (0:07:01) Al: I still feel like people would have been like, “But why?” (0:07:04) Al: Right? Because you can use it. (0:07:05) Al: Like a DS is not, DS games don’t feel old, like Game Boy games feel old. (0:07:12) Al: And yeah, some people would prefer to play a Game Boy game (0:07:16) Al: and remake of a Game Boy game. (0:07:17) Al: But a lot of people wouldn’t. (0:07:18) Al: A lot of people would prefer to play a newer game. (0:07:20) Al: But I feel like if you’re looking for a 2D Pokémon game, (0:07:24) Al: go play a 2D Pokémon game. (0:07:26) Al: I don’t think just remaking them as what they are makes sense anymore. (0:07:30) Codey: Yeah, I agree. I don’t think that that’s exciting enough to merit people dropping down another $60 or $50 or however much these games cost nowadays. (0:07:44) Al: or 120, if you buy them both, which obviously I would never do. You’d never find me doing that. (0:07:46) Codey: Yeah. No, of course not. No. Yeah, so I don’t… I think that it does a disservice to them to… (0:08:00) Codey: Not try and improve the games with the quality of life features that the fandom clearly needs or at the minimum, like have them be like a setting you can toggle or something. (0:08:14) Codey: So if people want to play the game on hard mode, they can. (0:08:18) Codey: Yeah. (0:08:18) Al: Let’s not get into the debate of hard mode. (0:08:22) Al: Yeah, I think, yeah, I just, it’s not even like Brilliant Diamond and Chime Pearl brought (0:08:30) Al: it up to the best or the most modern 2D games, right? (0:08:34) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:08:34) Al: Like the graphics were better, right? (0:08:37) Al: In my opinion, I know a lot of people didn’t like how it looked, but that’s fine. (0:08:40) Al: If you don’t like how it looked, that’s fine, but it is like more modern looking. (0:08:44) Al: It’s cleaner graphics, et cetera, et cetera, right? (0:08:48) Al: No, it’s not, it didn’t have as many quality of life improvements as even Gen 5 did, one (0:08:54) Codey: Mm hmm. Yeah. (0:08:55) Al: generation later, right? (0:08:58) Al: And so what are you doing if you’re not even going to improve it in that way, right? (0:09:04) Al: And that’s ignoring the stuff that they ignored that they had improved in Platinum. (0:09:09) Al: A Gen 4 game that came out two years later, right? (0:09:14) Al: Like if you’re going to ignore all of those improvements that you have made over the years (0:09:19) Al: don’t bother, but anyway, so yeah, I think I enjoyed the Professor Oak challenge because (0:09:20) Codey: Yeah (0:09:23) Codey: Hard agree (0:09:27) Al: it was very different compared to other ones, like having the grand underground, I think, (0:09:33) Al: was made that more interesting, but anyway, most people don’t care about that sort of (0:09:40) Al: stuff. (0:09:41) Al: So yeah, I’ve been playing through that and I’ll get there eventually. (0:09:44) Al: I’ve taken a break today to do some shiny hunting in Scarlet and Violet. (0:09:48) Al: But once I’ve done this, once I’ve caught Palkia, (0:09:52) Al: the only ones I’ll have left to do are, I don’t have a, (0:09:57) Al: because I’ve been for listeners who are, for new listeners or people who aren’t aware, (0:10:01) Al: I lost almost all of my Pokemon saves two years ago on my Switch. (0:10:05) Al: And I’ve recreated most of them now. (0:10:07) Al: So I have the only one, the only one I say I didn’t lose was my sword, (0:10:14) Al: Pokemon sword, because that was on a different Switch. (0:10:16) Al: because I was running two games at the same time. (0:10:18) Al: And I didn’t really like having to close a game and reopen it. (0:10:22) Al: So I just had two switches running the two games. (0:10:25) Al: So because of that, I managed to keep my sword. (0:10:29) Al: But other than that, I lost everything else. (0:10:31) Al: So all I’ve got left I don’t have is Let’s Go Pikachu and Shield. (0:10:39) Al: I think I have everything else because I’ve got Scarlet and Violet. (0:10:41) Al: I’ve got Legends Arceus. (0:10:44) Al: I’ve got Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl now. (0:10:47) Al: and I’ve got Let’s Go Eevee. (0:10:48) Al: And I’ve obviously got my original sword. (0:10:50) Al: So I think I’ve just got Let’s Go Pikachu to do and sword. (0:10:55) Al: And I will probably, I think I’ll probably do with Let’s Go Pikachu (0:10:58) Al: like I’m doing with Palkia and I’ll just kind of like rush through it (0:11:01) Al: and get it finished and then do the last couple of Pokémon (0:11:03) Al: that I need for the crown on Pokémon Home for those games. (0:11:06) Al: And then I think I will probably at some point, (0:11:11) Al: certainly not before the next Pokémon games that comes out, (0:11:14) Al: maybe at the end of the year or something, (0:11:17) Al: I will probably (0:11:18) Al: do a Professor Oak Challenge in Shield and get that done that way and finish up that (0:11:24) Al: dicks like that. Because that’s the only set of games on the Switch that I haven’t done (0:11:33) Al: a Professor Oak Challenge in because I started it for brilliant time in Shining Pearl. What a game (0:11:40) Al: to start that on. And then I went back and did Let’s Go Pikachu, but I didn’t go back and do (0:11:49) Al: Shield. No, I didn’t go back and do Pikachu because I already had a Pikachu save, (0:11:54) Al: but then I’d lost it, so I did Eevee. Anyway, doesn’t matter. Point is, I suspect by the middle (0:12:03) Al: of February, I will only have one Pokémon game not finished and that’ll be Shield and (0:12:12) Al: that’ll be the only Pokédex I don’t have finished on home as well. But I’ll get to that eventually. (0:12:16) Al: There’s no rush. (0:12:17) Codey: So, so I have a question. (0:12:19) Al: Yes, go for it. Yes, my secret is I don’t work. (0:12:20) Codey: Do you sleep? (0:12:23) Codey: I don’t believe you. (0:12:27) Codey: Oh, that worked. (0:12:28) Codey: That’s, that’s fair. (0:12:30) Al: Or if you are my employer, please don’t listen to this. The secret is that obviously the ADHD (0:12:35) Codey: Yeah. (0:12:38) Al: allows me to do like a week’s worth in like a day. And then I spend the rest of the time feeling (0:12:41) Codey: Yep. (0:12:43) Al: guilty that I’m not doing anything because my brain can’t, but it then distracts me. (0:12:45) Codey: Yep. (0:12:47) Codey: Yep, that’s where I am, too. (0:12:52) Codey: But that is part of working with neurodivergence. (0:12:59) Codey: So yeah, that’s actually, I’m doing a conference in November, and (0:12:59) Al: Yeah, weeeeeeee. (0:13:04) Codey: I’m going to try and have a symposium in that conference for, (0:13:08) Codey: it’s an entomology conference. (0:13:10) Codey: I want a symposium specifically on neurodivergence and why, and (0:13:14) Codey: and how to accommodate for… (0:13:17) Codey: people that work in your in your area or group or whatever university (0:13:22) Codey: accommodate for students and faculty that have neurodivergences versus like (0:13:27) Codey: just trying to make them conform because that is very left hand of left hand right (0:13:35) Codey: hand of people so that’s what we’ve been up to oh my gosh he doesn’t sleep you (0:13:38) Al: Oh, oh, wait, no, I’m not finished yet. (0:13:43) Al: I’ve been playing Harvest Moon Home Sweet Home. (0:13:45) Codey: guys I don’t believe it (0:13:47) Al: I’ve not been doing this very much, (0:13:49) Al: because I’ve just been doing like a day or two every day, (0:13:54) Al: which only takes like five or 10 minutes. (0:13:56) Al: But I’m trying to play these games like some people play (0:13:58) Al: them and just playing a little bit every day. (0:14:00) Al: And it’s been so much better with the controller support. (0:14:02) Al: I can actually play it now. (0:14:04) Codey: But can you save it the right way? (0:14:06) Codey: Bye. (0:14:08) Al: It doesn’t seem to work properly in so much as it saves fine, (0:14:12) Al: and it seems to be saving fine. (0:14:14) Al: And it seems like it loads when I go on. (0:14:16) Al: So I’m using it on my iPad, and I play it on my iPad, (0:14:19) Al: and it all seems to work. (0:14:20) Al: And I close the app, and I open up, and it all works fine. (0:14:22) Al: And then I go on to my Mac, and I open it up, and it says, (0:14:25) Al: oh, you’ve got new data. (0:14:26) Al: Do you want to download this? (0:14:27) Al: You go, yes, I’ll take the new data. (0:14:29) Al: And it shows the right thing on there. (0:14:31) Al: It says I’m at spring 23, year one, (0:14:34) Al: and I’ve got this much money, blah, blah, blah. (0:14:36) Al: And then you click on it, and then you actually (0:14:38) Al: get the game, and you’re back on spring one, (0:14:41) Al: and you have nothing. (0:14:42) Al: And the best thing about it is the save (0:14:44) Al: is completely mucked up in so much as there are no people. (0:14:46) Codey: Mm hmm. That sounds lovely, actually. (0:14:48) Al: People don’t exist in the game. (0:14:50) Al: There are no NPCs, and there’s nothing you can do. (0:14:53) Al: You just walk around and do nothing. (0:14:56) Al: It’s– it’s an autistic paradise. (0:15:02) Codey: That’s my kind of farming. (0:15:05) Al: Um. (0:15:06) Codey: Just give me give me all the tasks to do without the social interaction. (0:15:14) Al: So yeah, I can still only play on my iPad, (0:15:17) Al: which I do want the cloud save, (0:15:19) Al: and that would probably, (0:15:20) Al: I’d probably play it more if I had the cloud save, (0:15:22) Al: but the controller support means (0:15:24) Al: that I’m actually playing it. (0:15:26) Al: So, yeah. (0:15:29) Al: So that’s why I’ve been up to, (0:15:30) Al: I’ve also been thinking about the Switch 2. (0:15:32) Al: I don’t know if you’ve been thinking (0:15:33) Al: about the Switch 2 at all. (0:15:34) Codey: Nope. I don’t play my Switch that often, like at all. I know that I am going to play it. (0:15:35) Al: No, that’s fine. (0:15:37) Al: I’m excited for the Switch too. (0:15:38) Al: Hmm. (0:15:44) Codey: I’m going to play the Zelda games eventually, right? And then I enjoy having it for if I (0:15:50) Codey: want to play anything, but Xbox Game Pass has all I really need right now. And no, no, (0:15:57) Al: did you get did you get us a steam decadent Oh sad come on Jeff by the (0:16:03) Codey: I did not. (0:16:04) Codey: I am unloved no we yeah he was like still deciding if he wanted to do it or not he (0:16:13) Codey: actually did just get a raise so yeah maybe I’ll like walk by his phone and do that whole (0:16:16) Al: There you go. Perfect. (0:16:22) Codey: like steam deck like whisper into his phone so that his algorithm will start picking up (0:16:27) Codey: like ads first yeah. (0:16:28) Al: or we can get your is is it your neighbor Micah is it Micah can go in when Jeff moves (0:16:34) Al: in and get Micah to go and talk to him hint are you listening Micah you can we can we (0:16:35) Codey: Uh-huh does Micah have one I can’t remember I don’t know but yeah no my neighbor I’m wondering (0:16:46) Al: confusing Micah’s again I have no idea I don’t think that’s relevant to whether or not he (0:16:50) Codey: if he has a steam deck yeah oh true true true true yeah Micah when we have like a Jeff moved (0:16:55) Al: can convince Jeff to buy U.S.D. (0:17:03) Codey: and party. (0:17:04) Al: Yeah. Yeah, I heard it. I heard it on the podcast. (0:17:04) Codey: Um, you should be like, man, Cody really like was excited about (0:17:08) Codey: possibly because Jeff doesn’t, because Jeff does not listen to this. (0:17:15) Al: I guessed, I guessed. (0:17:18) Codey: Yeah, for sure. (0:17:19) Al: All right. Well, I’m excited about the switch too. And I’m sure we’ll have lots to talk about it in (0:17:23) Al: the future, even though they’ve not really said anything yet. But all right, should we talk about (0:17:28) Al: the news? First up, we have Rune Factory Guardian. (0:17:29) Codey: Sure. (0:17:34) Al: So, first of all, they’ve announced that it’s coming out on the 30th of May. (0:17:39) Codey: Woo. (0:17:40) Codey: Something. (0:17:44) Al: So, there we go. That’s the thing. They’ve given a bunch of information on the new features. (0:17:52) Al: So, it has a village building thing, which is, I think, quite cool. In the trailer, (0:17:58) Al: you see them placing buildings and stuff and that. (0:18:04) Al: That’s cool. I quite like that idea because I get all the previous Rune Factory games have been like, (0:18:09) Al: “Here is an existing village. Go and interact with it.” Whereas this seems to be like you’re (0:18:14) Al: building up a village from small as you do the rest of things as well, which is a fun addition. (0:18:20) Codey: Yeah, I got the vibe that you’re like going through an area that has been like devastated and you’re helping to like rebuild (0:18:28) Al: Yeah, but that’s cool. Because if the whole point of Rune Factory is, it’s what if farming (0:18:38) Al: game plus adventure, I feel like adding in Village Building to that is a good logical (0:18:45) Al: continuation of that. (0:18:46) Codey: Yeah, going elsewhere, spreading your farming knowledge to the masses. (0:18:52) Al: The rest of it seems pretty similar to previous Rune Factory games, your combat and stuff (0:18:59) Al: like that. (0:19:00) Al: There maybe seem to be a bit more in terms of what’s the word I’m looking for, the movement. (0:19:06) Al: You seem to be able to glide on wind and stuff like that that I haven’t experienced in the (0:19:12) Al: previous games, which is a fun addition, making it more Breath of the Wildy, I guess. (0:19:19) Al: And there’s also 16 romanceables in this game. (0:19:22) Al: Get your waifu or husbandu. (0:19:25) Codey: Has a bundle I think it’s Joe (0:19:31) Codey: Yeah, never played a room factory game so I don’t have much (0:19:34) Al: Probably never going to. (0:19:37) Codey: Probs not (0:19:40) Codey: But I mean it looks the village building aspect I really do like like the idea of (0:19:47) Codey: going through an area and like helping to rebuild and restore peace and (0:19:52) Codey: maybe like you can set up farms and then you (0:19:55) Codey: find someone who can farm it and then you (0:19:57) Codey: move on. So it’s like you are creating the (0:19:59) Codey: farms and that kind of stuff and creating the (0:20:03) Codey: little societies. But then you get to disappear (0:20:06) Codey: into the ether. (0:20:07) Al: Is this going to be a, this is going to be the third run factor in a row where I go, (0:20:10) Al: “Ooh, I could, I could, maybe I’ll like this.” (0:20:13) Al: And then I play it and go, “Eh, it’s not really for me.” (0:20:16) Codey: Okay, maybe maybe the village maybe the village thing will be not will will make it change, (0:20:16) Al: Isn’t it? (0:20:17) Al: It’s going to, it’s going to happen again, isn’t it? (0:20:20) Al: Cause I’m getting that feeling. (0:20:27) Codey: maybe you will enjoy. We’re going to be optimistic here, because you’re going to have to play it. So (0:20:28) Al: Yeah, no one’s making me. (0:20:38) Codey: I am promising at this because I make the promises in this hostel. (0:20:46) Codey: Yeah, if you you can only marry. Yeah. (0:20:48) Al: What I didn’t notice is there didn’t seem to be anything about whether the romanceables (0:20:56) Al: are segregated. Oh dear. You know what I mean? Whether you can romance anyone or not. It (0:21:06) Al: does look like… I’m not seeing anything… I can’t remember five, but before five it (0:21:09) Codey: What has it been in all the previous games? (0:21:15) Al: It was definitely only… (0:21:18) Al: opposite gender. But I can’t remember what five did. However, obviously, that was also an issue (0:21:24) Al: for Story of Seasons and is no longer an issue for Story of Seasons and it’s the same company. (0:21:29) Al: So I would hope that now it will allow you to romance any character, but who knows? We’ll see. (0:21:39) Codey: We live in a society. (0:21:41) Codey: Thank you. (0:21:45) Al: It is $60. (0:21:48) Al: euros or 42 pounds. (0:21:50) Al: That is pretty cheap here. (0:21:52) Codey: What why why did you guys like pay a premium to like your government paid a (0:21:53) Al: I don’t know why it’s cheaper here than not though, I don’t know. (0:22:02) Codey: premium so they could get it for cheaper. (0:22:05) Al: The limited edition is $100 or 66 pounds and 66 pence. (0:22:10) Al: What a weird… (0:22:11) Codey: What the heck? (0:22:11) Al: Why is this such a weird number? (0:22:15) Al: it’s interesting. So the standard way. (0:22:18) Al: One. So this is for switch physical is (0:22:18) Codey: Uh huh. (0:22:21) Al: fifty nine ninety nine dollars forty one sixty six pounds or forty nine ninety nine euros. (0:22:27) Al: Right. So I would think maybe it was just (0:22:29) Al: auto-converted if it weren’t for the fact that the euros was a sensible one as well. (0:22:33) Al: So that’s weird. (0:22:34) Al: But then you go on to the limited edition one, which is nine ninety nine ninety nine (0:22:40) Al: dollars sixty six sixty six pounds or eighty three thirty two euros. (0:22:43) Codey: I mean, is it, do you guys have like a tax or something like a tariff on them that that (0:22:48) Al: What is with these numbers? (0:22:51) Al: So confused. (0:22:56) Al: Yeah, but. (0:22:58) Codey: would counteract? (0:23:00) Al: I mean, not if if so, it would be the case on every game, right? (0:23:06) Codey: Well, but maybe they’re like doing you a solid, like this company is like, we know, we know that (0:23:09) Al: Well, not rounding up. (0:23:11) Codey: you have to pay out your nose for shipping. So we’re just going to make the cost cheaper. (0:23:20) Codey: Yeah, I don’t know. I’m just trying to grasp the straws because that’s a little bizarre. (0:23:20) Al: if amazon has the the limited edition for 80 and the standard for 45 which I think was (0:23:24) Codey: Seems like a typo. (0:23:35) Al: the limited edition was more expensive yeah that was like 20 quid more for the limited edition (0:23:35) Codey: the euro prices. (0:23:41) Al: and three pounds more for the oh it’s very confusing what is happening here (0:23:46) Codey: There’s no logic in this place. (0:23:49) Al: I think these must. (0:23:50) Al: be auto translated like auto thing made because I can’t even find I can’t even find (0:23:59) Al: that number anywhere on any shop so I’m just going to ignore it I’m in all right anyway (0:24:03) Codey: Are they trying to say that this is the devil’s game? (0:24:11) Al: there’s that you can go pre-order it now if you want to go go go buy the game if you want (0:24:15) Al: it or if you’re me um next we have harvest hills uh have announced (0:24:15) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:24:20) Al: they’re out now uh I don’t think we got previous notice of this coming out on this date because (0:24:26) Al: I didn’t have it down as that so they’ve just it’s out shadow drop they go (0:24:30) Codey: Yep, that’s the way to do it (0:24:33) Al: um trying to decide if I wanted to play this game or not uh it looks nice it’s nice graphics (0:24:41) Al: but oh no they did announce their release date I just missed it they released it on Christmas eve (0:24:47) Al: I don’t think this had an early access, so this is just… (0:24:52) Codey: Yeah, no, this one was one that I was interested in because of the beehives looking actually like beehives. (0:24:58) Al: Oh yes, oh yes. Oh, it’s cheap. Five quid, that’s wild. Okay, okay. (0:25:00) Codey: And I’m really, yeah, it’s only like $5. (0:25:07) Codey: Okay, the final the final question, can it be played on Mac? Nope. Sorry, y’all. (0:25:12) Al: Oh, but it can on Steam Deck. I’d say it’s unknown compatibility on Steam Deck, but (0:25:17) Codey: Well, I (0:25:20) Al: I suspect it’ll be fine on Steam Deck, because it has controller support. (0:25:22) Codey: It does look really cute, cool. (0:25:24) Al: Interesting. Okay. Yeah. So if you want that game, go play it. Mika. (0:25:28) Al: Which is mountain have announced that their non early access release is coming on the 22nd (0:25:35) Al: of January. What I’m a little bit confused by is that they’ve said that the third update is coming (0:25:44) Al: in the coming weeks. So this seems to be leaving early access without an update. (0:25:50) Al: Like they’re just going, Oh, it’s not early access anymore. But this is this is they’ve been weird (0:25:56) Al: about this since the beginning, right? Because I… (0:25:58) Al: Still don’t understand why they ever put this out in Early Access, (0:26:01) Al: because it wasn’t Early Access. They just added extra content after the fact. (0:26:04) Al: And now they’re releasing their non-Early Access version before the final update. (0:26:10) Codey: I mean, that seems pretty par for the course, given that Coral Island did a lot of the same stuff. (0:26:11) Al: Weird. Weird. What are they doing over there? (0:26:19) Al: - Well, yeah, I mean, I feel like “Mika and the Witch’s Mountain” was more complete on (0:26:23) Codey: Yeah. (0:26:23) Al: its early access release than “Coral Island” was on its 1.0 release. I don’t know, weird, (0:26:28) Codey: Yeah, that’s fair. (0:26:33) Al: confused, whatever. Why they didn’t go, “Oh, this is now out of early access” with their (0:26:38) Al: second content update, because the third content update is extra stuff that they’d want to (0:26:44) Al: add but wasn’t originally promised and so why they didn’t go or the second up (0:26:49) Al: it is the non-early access release okay great fine done but they didn’t do that they’ve gone (0:26:55) Al: no this random date a few weeks before the final update that doesn’t have an actual update (0:27:02) Al: that is the non-early access version (0:27:04) Codey: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I don’t know is this this is the one where they’re gonna do they’re gonna add dungeons, right? (0:27:11) Al: yes correct (0:27:11) Codey: Yeah, cuz it says into the mount gone (0:27:14) Codey: uh (0:27:15) Al: Yeah, this is the time if you played the game before and you haven’t played. (0:27:19) Al: either of the content updates this will be the time to play it because I believe this is the (0:27:23) Al: final update and yeah it has a lot of extra content whereas the previous ones they were fun (0:27:30) Al: they do look fun but they were kind of small things it was like here’s a minigame here’s (0:27:35) Al: an extra collectible whereas this is yeah here are dungeons that you can go into much bigger. (0:27:40) Codey: Mm-hmm. Yeah, cool (0:27:42) Al: Galactic getaway they have announced that their early access comes out in March (0:27:48) Codey: Sorry, I just reread my comment and didn’t even realize it was a pun. (0:27:53) Al: Yeah (0:27:55) Al: You (0:27:57) Codey: So I wrote, how are they getting away with this? (0:28:01) Codey: And it’s galactic getaway. (0:28:04) Codey: So what I was referring to, I almost typed it out, but I wanted it to be like a secret. (0:28:09) Codey: When I look at this like Kickstarter picture that they have, the little robot is clearly (0:28:18) Codey: WALL-E with like a headset on and the dog looks kind of like Doug from up. (0:28:18) Al: Okay, bye. (0:28:27) Codey: And then the spaceship in the back left looks like Stitch’s spaceship from Leelo and Stitch. (0:28:34) Codey: So they’re just, the getaway part of this is that they’re getting away with not being (0:28:38) Codey: sued by Disney, I think. (0:28:38) Al: Right. Okay. So a couple of things. One, I don’t get the spaceship one. It doesn’t look (0:28:41) Codey: Okay. (0:28:44) Al: in it. Oh, no, I see. I know. I see. You mean that one. And I feel like I can see what you’re (0:28:51) Al: getting, what you’re coming, where you’re coming from, but they’re all pretty generic anyway, (0:28:56) Al: right? Like Eve is a pretty like generic looking robot. Doug is a dog, right? Like there’s only (0:29:01) Codey: Yeah, this is the we have Eve at home. (0:29:04) Codey: Uh-huh. (0:29:07) Al: so many dogs that the. (0:29:09) Al: And the spaceship is a red spaceship it it doesn’t even. (0:29:14) Codey: And the watering can has a star on it, like in, uh, I look at, I’m, the more I look someone (0:29:15) Al: Like it doesn’t even have the exact same design. (0:29:19) Al: Oh, come on. (0:29:22) Al: Come on. (0:29:28) Codey: in the background has buns like in, uh, Star Wars. No, I just, that like the, the picture. (0:29:34) Al: The robot is your biggest argument, I see why you’re saying that and I understand what you’re coming from, however, it’s a pretty generic looking robot shape, I think, personally. (0:29:51) Codey: But no, I, I just, I noticed that and I was like, Oh wow. (0:29:55) Codey: But yeah, I don’t know. (0:29:57) Codey: I’d like to see, uh, more stuff about this game. (0:30:00) Codey: I mean, they’ve, they’re going to add, they’re fixing the creatures, the (0:30:04) Codey: farming, the crafting, the mini games, um, and early access in March, 2025. (0:30:11) Codey: So, oh, woo. (0:30:15) Al: Usagi Shima have announced that they have a Chinese New Year update out now with one (0:30:21) Al: very important thing. Would you like to mention it? Yeah, you can give a costume to your bun (0:30:22) Codey: Uh, lion… lion dancing. (0:30:29) Al: to make it look like a… See, I thought these were dragons. I know it says lion, but I feel (0:30:33) Codey: No, they’re quick. Yeah. Have you ever seen lion dancing? Have you ever seen lion dancing? (0:30:35) Al: like it’s the Chinese New Year dragon, isn’t it? No, from a traditional saying. (0:30:43) Codey: I had um, I had a woman. Yeah, no, they’re lions. Um, there were a couple people in my high school (0:30:45) Al: Those are really, those are meant to be lions. I thought they were dragons. They don’t look (0:30:53) Al: anything like lions. (0:30:56) Codey: that uh were lion dancers and so they would do um in all the (0:31:03) Codey: like assemblies. They’d have a lion dancing part to the assembly. It was really cool. (0:31:10) Codey: Oh, that’s that was a big jump that I had to make. So you said this is a costume? (0:31:16) Al: So there’s a costume and there’s a minigame. You maybe have to do the minigame to get the costume, (0:31:21) Al: I’m not sure. Yeah, you jump over buns, some of which are in the costume. (0:31:22) Codey: Is the minigame the jumping? (0:31:29) Codey: Well, I just jumped over a plant and then lost to a mushroom, so. (0:31:33) Al: Oh, OK, so it’s more than buns that you jump over. Fair enough. (0:31:36) Codey: But that’s exciting. (0:31:39) Al: Yeah, if you love this game, it’s another update and with stuff for you to do. (0:31:40) Codey: I haven’t played this game in a while. (0:31:45) Codey: And it’s still cute. (0:31:47) Al: Yes, if you liked the game before, you’ll probably like this update. Let’s be honest. (0:31:50) Codey: you will continue the (0:31:52) Codey: liking shall continue. (0:31:54) Al: Yeah, for sure. (0:31:56) Al: Chill Town have announced their upcoming updates, 0.9 and 1.0. They’ve given some details on them. (0:32:04) Al: It’s mostly 0.9, like right at the end of the post to go, (0:32:10) Al: “Oh, and by the way, there will be festivals. That’s coming in 1.0.” (0:32:15) Codey: Yep, they talk about how they have sprinting, which I thought folks might like given that, (0:32:16) Al: But the rest of it seems to be 0.9. (0:32:28) Codey: you know, the issue was that you had to run across the map, right? That was something (0:32:32) Codey: folks were complaining about when they played it. So maybe being able to run faster will (0:32:37) Codey: alleviate some of that. But the more important thing is that they lied to me in that steam (0:32:45) Codey: that says that there’s a nature exhibit with it that you can fill with insects. But I saw no insects. (0:32:50) Codey: So that’s all they haven’t. But like, you can’t mention that without showing an insect or two, (0:32:51) Al: Maybe they’ve just not put any in yet (0:32:59) Codey: as like an example. They don’t, they, they literally just, they just walk through it’s as (0:33:02) Al: Don’t think they show anything in that they just it’s like completely empty (0:33:08) Codey: if an animal crossing or coral island or whatever, like you just walk through the part of the museum (0:33:13) Codey: in which the insects are supposed to be. (0:33:15) Codey: I was like waiting, I’m like, is there going to be like a butterfly that lies out? (0:33:16) Al: Yeah, very weird. (0:33:27) Codey: Um, yeah, I was, I was really excited to see insects and then there weren’t any, but that’s (0:33:33) Codey: okay. (0:33:34) Codey: Something to look forward to. (0:33:34) Al: Wooo! (0:33:37) Al: Fields of Mystery app have announced their next update, the second major update coming in March. (0:33:46) Al: It adds a new villager, some additional dialogue and schedules for the NPCs. (0:33:54) Al: More unlocks in the mines, which is important. I need to get further down those mines, (0:34:01) Codey: Yep. Yep. (0:34:01) Al: Although I need to I need to not play this (0:34:05) Al: yet. I need to not go into the cut zone. I think I need to wait for more updates, (0:34:10) Al: otherwise I’ll just end up burning out before the end of it. New areas in the town, additional (0:34:17) Al: requests, more museum stuff, new festival, just yeah. Oh the farmland expansion is added. Oh yes. (0:34:27) Al: Gotta get a bigger farm. Do I need a bigger farm? No I do not. Sprinklers! Yes! Finally! Adding (0:34:30) Codey: But you can. (0:34:34) Al: sprinklers and an auto petter. This is getting good. This game’s getting good. It was already (0:34:43) Al: good. It’s getting even better. They’ve also listed a bunch of stuff that’s coming in future (0:34:48) Al: updates but they just they say in no particular order. Just like here are things that we’re (0:34:50) Codey: But, but the automation is the most important. (0:34:53) Al: thinking about. Oh yes. Gotta love it. Also in-game time adjustment options, which is something that (0:35:03) Al: that always sounds like a good idea. (0:35:07) Codey: I mean people probably use it because they want to like skip forward to something or (0:35:12) Codey: other or skip back possibly if they missed a festival or something. (0:35:16) Al: Yeah. All right. And finally, finally, second, finally, next, next we have (0:35:24) Codey: But penultimate final. (0:35:30) Al: just an ultimate. You don’t need to add on the final one to the end. (0:35:35) Al: Next, we have webfishing have released a plush of their main character, the cat, (0:35:43) Al: on Makeship. So if you want that, and it’s funded, it’s out. (0:35:47) Codey: Uh-huh (0:35:47) Al: Definitely happening. So if you want it, go get it. (0:35:51) Codey: Yep, it is $29.99 and most importantly that Al did not mention is that it is holding a salmon (0:36:00) Al: for sure it’s very cute I don’t need (0:36:01) Codey: That’s the most important part (0:36:05) Codey: No, but wait, do you what if you don’t get it and then you want it later? (0:36:10) Al: So Craig, my youngest, is really into Astrobok recently, right? (0:36:12) Codey: Uh-huh (0:36:14) Codey: Okay (0:36:15) Al: Like obsessed with it. (0:36:17) Al: He’s been playing it a couple of hours most days of the week. (0:36:17) Codey: You (0:36:20) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:36:21) Al: He is, and he’s getting really good at it, right? (0:36:22) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:36:23) Al: This is his first proper game that he’s played. (0:36:26) Al: Like he’s done a couple of bits here and there, (0:36:28) Al: but he’s not really like been playing them properly. (0:36:31) Al: But this is, he’s like doing most of it. (0:36:33) Al: There’s a few times where he’s like, can you help me with this? (0:36:35) Al: Because it’s too difficult, but he’s getting really good at it. (0:36:38) Al: like from it’s been like three weeks. (0:36:40) Al: or something and from the start till now he’s improved so much but he’s absolutely obsessed (0:36:46) Al: with it so much that we we just ordered the astrobot plush and that should be arriving (0:36:49) Codey: Oh. (0:36:51) Al: the day this episode comes out so he is very excited about that. (0:36:54) Codey: So if I hear a squeal from around the world of excitement. (0:36:59) Codey: Cool. (0:36:59) Al: Yeah finally we have information on a new Animal Crossing aquarium tour this time in the UK. We’ll (0:37:07) Al: We’ll come back to that word in a minute. (0:37:10) Al: I believe they did this in Japan and a few other places. (0:37:14) Al: I feel like I said about it in Canada and America, maybe as well. (0:37:18) Al: There’s a few. (0:37:19) Al: Anyway, it’s coming to the UK as well in collaboration with Sea Life UK. (0:37:23) Al: Now, I say UK because it is very much a tiny, tiny portion of one part of the UK. (0:37:32) Al: It’s like four different cities that are like half an hour to travel between each other. (0:37:40) Al: It is like a pathetically small amount, and you might go, “Oh, well, it’s because it’s (0:37:45) Al: Sea Life. (0:37:46) Al: It’s a specific company, and they don’t have any other place. (0:37:49) Al: They do. (0:37:50) Al: They have one in Scotland, and they didn’t do it there. (0:37:52) Codey: Well, yeah, they don’t want to do that, right? (0:37:53) Al: Thank you very much.” (0:37:53) Al: Don’t call it a UK tour if it’s just England. (0:37:57) Al: It’s an England tour, but like saying a US tour, and it’s just New York. (0:38:02) Codey: Yeah, just New York and Los Angeles. (0:38:02) Al: Go away. (0:38:05) Al: It’s a Europe tour, European tour. (0:38:10) Al: I’m annoyed. (0:38:10) Codey: Yeah, I guess I don’t really understand like what this is, (0:38:14) Al: Yeah, I think so, yeah, I believe so. (0:38:15) Codey: like, will there just be characters around? (0:38:20) Codey: Around. (0:38:24) Al: There’s activities as well. (0:38:25) Al: I think they have the stamp thing that they do in the game, so it says, “Visitors will (0:38:31) Al: be able to collect character stamps, discover many interesting facts about the inhabitants (0:38:35) Al: of Sea Life, and meet with Tom Nook and Isabel. (0:38:38) Al: at the end of the visit fans will be able to purchase. (0:38:40) Al: Animal Crossing New Horizons merchandise, of course they will, at the Aquarium store. (0:38:44) Codey: What villager would have to be included in either the merchandise or the stamp thing for you to go? (0:38:54) Al: or for me to travel all the way down to, I think Manchester is the closest one, (0:38:59) Al: which would be a, I think it’s a five hour drive for me, which is not insignificant. (0:39:08) Al: I know it means nothing to Americans who will drive five hours for dinner. (0:39:16) Al: I don’t think there is someone, I don’t really think so, like, (0:39:19) Codey: I would think, so if this was in New York or DC, which are like a three to five hour drive from (0:39:24) Codey: where I am, if Blue Bear was in there, Blue Bear is my favorite. (0:39:30) Al: Yeah, I just don’t think… I think it would be… I would drive two hours to go to this, (0:39:37) Al: I think. That’s how far I would drive to get to this. Coincidentally, about the time it (0:39:41) Al: takes to leave Scotland. I would drive two hours to this. I don’t think there’s anything (0:39:49) Al: realistically that would make me drive five hours. I don’t think I could do that. That’s (0:39:56) Al: too far. Especially considering we have an (0:40:00) Al: aquarium five minutes from us that we have a season pass to. So I would be paying to travel (0:40:08) Al: five hours to then pay to get into an aquarium when I have a season pass to an aquarium next to (0:40:14) Al: me. That doesn’t feel the most sensible situation, right? Oh, we do. All right, that is the news. (0:40:18) Codey: We have an aquarium at home. (0:40:25) Al: So next we will be going into our interview with Jordan, the developer of (0:40:30) Al: overseas retirement. We recorded that at a different time. So if it sounds different, (0:40:36) Al: that’s why. I hope you enjoy the interview. (0:40:38) Al: Weeee! (0:40:39) Al: Woo! (0:40:39) Al: Woo! (0:40:48) Al: Okay, we are now back with the developer of Rusty’s retirement, which just to remind listeners (0:40:56) Al: was the winner of the Harvest Seasons Game of the Year last year. (0:41:01) Al: Hello, welcome to the podcast, what is your name and what are your pronouns? (0:41:06) Jordan: Hiya. My name is Jordan, he/him. Yeah, I’m the developer of Rusty’s retirement, and also a smaller, lesser-known metroidvania called Hyekuda Robot, which is in the same universe as Rusty, actually, if you didn’t know that. A little bit of lore for you. (0:41:24) Al: I did not know that and I do like metroidvanias, maybe I’ll look at that at some point. (0:41:30) Codey: wait it’s a metroid haiku as in haiku the helper of russey (0:41:35) Jordan: Yep (0:41:37) Codey: he metroid what okay continue I have questions (0:41:41) Al: Well, good thing that you have questions because this is an interview, so I guess we’ll start (0:41:48) Al: off with a couple of easy questions. What is your history with games, just in general? (0:41:54) Al: What did you play when you were young? How did you get to where you are with games? (0:41:59) Jordan: Yeah, so I think my sort of gaming journey, let’s say, started when I was little, (0:42:08) Jordan: and I can’t remember the age exactly, but it was when Game Boy Color came out, (0:42:13) Jordan: because that was my first console that I ever got. And I just have super fond memories of playing (0:42:21) Jordan: Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy Color. So yeah, after that, and it was just like all the game. (0:42:29) Jordan: Boy stuff, Game Boy SP, Game Boy SP Advance, all of those ones. Nintendo DS when it came out, (0:42:39) Jordan: you know, all that sort of stuff. And then eventually I got like a PlayStation, I think. (0:42:44) Jordan: So I played like typical PlayStation games like GTA and stuff when I was definitely not age (0:42:51) Jordan: appropriate to play GTA, but still pretty fun times. So yeah, just sort of a mix, but it definitely (0:42:59) Jordan: with Game Boy and Game Boy Color. (0:43:01) Al: Yeah, fair enough. What was your starter in in Pokemon gold? (0:43:04) Jordan: Oh, I think it was the crocodile looking guy. Yes, that’s the one. (0:43:09) Al: Totodile. Yeah, good one. Good one. You’re in good company because we are both also Pokemon fans. (0:43:16) Codey: Mm-hmm (0:43:16) Al: I’ve been doing a lot of Pokemon recently. (0:43:20) Jordan: Yeah, I even I even actually bought because they did this remaster edition of like heart (0:43:25) Jordan: gold or something for like at the time I didn’t have a DS, I think it broke or I was only using (0:43:33) Jordan: my cousins or something like that. So I literally went out and bought a DS just so I could buy (0:43:39) Jordan: Pokemon Heart Gold. And that was like the only game I had for it. That was it. (0:43:44) Al: Yeah, I was actually the same because I dropped out of Pokémon after Gen 2 and came back (0:43:50) Al: for HeartGold SoulSilver. And I didn’t have a DS either, but my mum had a DS for brain (0:43:55) Al: training games. And so I was like, “Can I use your DS, please?” I used her DS and played (0:44:02) Al: HeartGold SoulSilver. I then got my own DSi for when the black and white came out. It (0:44:08) Al: a good time to jump back in, I think. (0:44:10) Codey: I think everyone had that like break period where they like played and then they stopped (0:44:15) Codey: playing and then they jumped back in, or at least I had that, yeah, yeah. (0:44:18) Jordan: - Yeah, I did as well. (0:44:20) Jordan: After HeartGold, I think I went and played all the DS, (0:44:24) Jordan: Pokemon games that released, (0:44:25) Jordan: like Diamond, Pearl, Sapphire, Ruby, all of those ones. (0:44:30) Al: Fair enough. Rusty’s retirement is obviously a farming game. What is your history with farming (0:44:36) Al: games? When did you because obviously there’s got to be a point where you’re like I’m making (0:44:40) Al: a farming game. So how did you get to that point in enjoying farming games or you know (0:44:46) Al: cottagecore games in general? Wow, okay interesting. (0:44:48) Jordan: I’ve never played a farming game, still to this day, other than Rusty’s retirement. (0:44:58) Codey: - Wild. (0:45:00) Jordan: So I know they exist, I know how they work, and obviously when I landed on Rusty’s retirement, (0:45:09) Jordan: well first of all, let me go back a little bit more. So after my first game, which was (0:45:14) Jordan: haikura robot, the same haikura that appears in Russia’s retirement. (0:45:19) Jordan: I was kind of stuck with what to do because making a Metroidvania was just a massive undertaking, especially to do it solo. (0:45:27) Jordan: Like I did all the art, animations, the coding, and there’s just so much content like you need. (0:45:33) Jordan: There was like 10 or 10 to 15 bosses at the end, you know, it’s just so much work. (0:45:39) Jordan: Like each boss needs their own unique animations, attack patterns, all this sort of stuff. (0:45:45) Jordan: And I was like, vowed to myself that I’m never going to (0:45:48) Jordan: put myself through this again, that I’m going to try and make (0:45:52) Jordan: something smaller and simpler as my next game. But when I (0:45:56) Jordan: finished from Metroidvania, that I didn’t know what to do. So I (0:46:03) Jordan: had this sort of brainwave of, I’m just going to make these (0:46:07) Jordan: sort of small prototypes, spend about two weeks on an idea (0:46:11) Jordan: because, you know, I had a bunch of ideas I wanted to try out, (0:46:15) Jordan: spend about two weeks on each sort of idea. (0:46:18) Jordan: And just test them just to want to see if I could actually do some of this stuff, you know, like some my technical capability isn’t like fantastic. I’m not like a fantastic coder. So some of this stuff is just simply out of my reach, just from a technical standpoint. (0:46:34) Al: You’re not making a 3D Zelda game. (0:46:35) Jordan: And then (0:46:37) Jordan: Yeah, or like, you know, I love strategy games and forex games as well. So like, but those things are like humongous. I would never be able to do something like that. (0:46:47) Jordan: And, and yes. (0:46:48) Jordan: So I just did these prototypes and I made Rusty and funnily, funnily enough. (0:46:55) Jordan: I actually shelved Rusty for like three months because I made it and most (0:47:01) Jordan: of the prototypes I made, and then I showed them on Twitter, right? (0:47:06) Jordan: I showed like, Hey guys, what do you think of this sort of thing? (0:47:10) Jordan: Just to kind of gauge, you know, interest and stuff like this, because I (0:47:14) Jordan: didn’t want to make something that, you know, at the end of the day, (0:47:17) Jordan: nobody wants to play. (0:47:18) Jordan: I was kind of trying to find this balance of like, okay, I’m going to do these (0:47:21) Jordan: ideas that I want to make and find out if I want to make them, but then also (0:47:26) Jordan: show them to people to see if there’s interest because I think if there’s (0:47:28) Jordan: interest, it also kind of motivates you to make it as well. (0:47:31) Jordan: You know, so it’s like this balance. (0:47:34) Jordan: Uh, but for Rusty, I thought, man, this is such a stupid idea. (0:47:38) Jordan: Nobody’s going to want to play this. (0:47:40) Jordan: And I just shelved it for like three months. (0:47:42) Jordan: Uh, but luckily I had commissioned, um, the sprites for. (0:47:48) Jordan: Rusty and they came through and I was thinking, you know, I should at (0:47:52) Jordan: least put sprites in the game now that they’ve done, just see what it looks like. (0:47:56) Jordan: And that’s when I thought, Oh, it was pretty cool. (0:47:58) Jordan: And I should make this into something. (0:48:00) Jordan: But before that, I hadn’t played any farming games or anything like that. (0:48:04) Jordan: But then once I kind of had this rusty idea and I also put it on Twitter (0:48:09) Jordan: and people really liked it, then I started like, uh, researching more (0:48:13) Jordan: into farming games and stuff. (0:48:14) Codey: » Mm-hmm. (0:48:16) Al: if you still not played any. (0:48:16) Jordan: But interestingly enough, I… (0:48:18) Jordan: No, I haven’t, because I was tempted to play Stardew Valley, (0:48:22) Jordan: but I didn’t want to get too influenced by the decisions that were made in that game. (0:48:29) Jordan: Like, I researched enough to know what’s the sort of loop, the core gameplay loop, (0:48:34) Jordan: and understand how that works, but I didn’t want to play it and see exactly how it’s done, (0:48:39) Jordan: because then I felt like it’s just going to influence my decision too much. (0:48:43) Jordan: And that kind of happened with my first game th

(0:00:34) Al: My name is Al, and we’re here today to talk about cottagecore games. (0:00:36) Jonnie: and my name is Johnny! (0:00:42) Al: Today, well first of all transcripts are available on the show notes and on the website, as usual. (0:00:50) Al: Today we’re going back to our roots. (0:00:53) Al: Today we are going to talk about Stardew Valley 1.6, it’s finally here, and we have lots of thoughts. (0:01:00) Al: And I have 30 hours of stard you played this week. (0:01:10) Al: So we were going to talk about that. (0:01:13) Al: We’ll leave all that for the main section. (0:01:17) Al: Before that, we’ve got a bunch of news to talk about. (0:01:19) Al: First of all, Johnny, have you been playing anything other than stard you? (0:01:23) Al: » Okay. » Ooh. (0:01:24) Jonnie: Uh, I kind of have been so alongside alongside statue I’ve been slowly getting back into old-school landscape (0:01:32) Jonnie: Uh, I have a few friends who are playing (0:01:35) Jonnie: and (0:01:37) Jonnie: I don’t know what to tell you for a game. It’s terrible. It’s pretty fun terrible game and (0:01:44) Jonnie: I’ve been having a bit of fun playing that with with some with some friends and (0:01:48) Jonnie: Joking about it like it has farming in it, but it’s never a game that we would cover on the show (0:01:52) Jonnie: Uh, I I think the summary is (0:01:54) Jonnie: farming in that game pretty bad but you know pretty much everything in that game is pretty bad so yeah but I did do a quest last night that was all about frogs kind of taking over to humanity and you murder a frog unintentionally it’s it’s pretty great (0:02:16) Al: I accept our new frog overlords. They probably will do a better job than humans. (0:02:24) Jonnie: I don’t know, these frogs seemed pretty terrible. (0:02:28) Jonnie: I would be much more in favour of the penguins rolling over us. (0:02:32) Jonnie: Which is an entirely different story. (0:02:36) Al: Uh, dear. Cool. Uh, well, I mean, I don’t, yeah, I’ve, I don’t think I’ve (0:02:40) Jonnie: But that’s it, that’s it. What if you’ve been up to well? (0:02:46) Al: had any time for anything other than Stardew with my 30 hours this week. Uh, that’s almost a full-time job. Um, I am tired, but I did want to talk about my Animal Crossing Lego again. Um, do you have anything to say, Johnny? Which ones did you get? (0:03:02) Jonnie: yeah I have I have two of the animal crossing lego things um I i got the um tom nook and (0:03:12) Jonnie: blue cat I don’t know what the name of the cat is um (0:03:15) Al: Do you not have the box in front of you to look at? (0:03:18) Jonnie: uh I do not have the box in front of me the box in the other room (0:03:22) Jonnie: I got that one and I got the island camping um set and they are pretty great (0:03:31) Al: the island camping, what is that? The Bunnies Outdoor Adventures one. (0:03:36) Al: What I really like about, so I’ve done that one, I’ve built that one. I’ve not built the Tom Nook one. I’ve built the Bunnies Outdoor Adventure, the birthday party one, and (0:03:49) Al: the farming one. I’ve built those three. I haven’t built the Tom Nook one or Captain’s (0:04:01) Al: Boat one, but what I will say is, so Bunnies Outdoor Adventure, I love how, so they’ve got the little river bit, and Bunnie has a stick that goes into a bit that can then (0:04:15) Al: act like your, you know how early game you use the stick to get across the rivers? (0:04:20) Al: It’s like, it’s built into it. So yeah, so it’s built into it. So there’s a bit behind the river where you put the stick in and then they can literally vault over the river. It’s really (0:04:20) Jonnie: Yeah, it’s like the pole vault. (0:04:31) Al: really nicely done. I think it’s very close. (0:04:34) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that set is really well put together and as far as LEGO sets go it’s like pretty, uh, pretty affordable. (0:04:46) Al: Okay. Okay, I mean, I guess that’s one way of putting it, right? They are cheaper than other sets, but they’re also smaller than other sets. So I guess they’ve erred on the side of making them more affordable rather than making them bigger, and that’s fair. (0:04:49) Jonnie: Like, like a lot of LEGO sets are like into the hundreds of dollars and this one is not in the hundreds of dollars. (0:05:02) Jonnie: Yeah, I think when I say affordable, I think that it’s not very complicated to put together, (0:05:15) Jonnie: but it’s a cool set to have, and there’s a lot of modularity within the set. I think for (0:05:23) Jonnie: what you pay for a set of this size, I was relatively impressed. (0:05:32) Al: Yeah, I’ve also built the Isabelle one as well, I’ve been joining them all together as I build them, because they all have the same connections to put together, because they’re built on those, if you’ve had any of the Mario sets, you’ll know the same sort of things, it’s like the same small base plates that it’s all made up of, so you can, as you say, they’re modular, you can put them together how you want. So yeah, as I finish one I just connect it together. So I’ve just got this (0:06:02) Al: mess of an island growing beside my desk. It’s quite fun. I also I meant to mention this on the last podcast, but I completely forgot. I also went to the the Animal Crossing Lego Make and Take event at the Lego store because they were doing them and they did them and well, they did it in Edinburgh, but I was I didn’t go to the Edinburgh one. I actually went to the Glasgow one in Scotland and it was good fun. (0:06:08) Jonnie: Great. I love that. (0:06:32) Al: A little, it’s like a really maybe like a five to one scale version of the building that you get in the Isabelle one. So it’s because it looks it looks almost identical just tiny and it’s fun to have the two versions together like it’s a it’s a really small one like the base plate is eight eight by eight whereas the the fill size one is like. (0:07:02) Al: It’s probably about the same size as Nook’s Cranny that you’ve got in that set. It’s kind of like decent sized, but it’s fun to have the two of them together. But it was fun because it was my first Make and Take event that I’d been to at a Lego store and it was quite fun because you go up and obviously because it’s Animal Crossing it was really popular so really busy. A lot of not children there I will say probably not surprisingly and you stood in a queue for about half an hour. (0:07:32) Al: And then you got in and they had like all the different pots with all the different pieces and then you followed the instructions to put them together. (0:07:39) Al: They did say that if you wanted to, you could just grab a bag and put all the pieces in it and take it all home rather than building it there. (0:07:44) Al: But I was like, well, I’m here with my kid. (0:07:47) Al: Let’s do it while we’re here. (0:07:48) Al: Why not? (0:07:49) Al: And it was good fun to do that. (0:07:52) Jonnie: Nice, and do your kids get involved in helping you build the LEGO sets, or do they not even know they exist and you do them in secret? (0:07:57) Al: No, so Craig does… I mean Nathan doesn’t really care about Lego, right? He doesn’t have. It is just a care. Craig really likes Lego, but me and him do not build Lego together because I am not good at sharing that. And so much as like I just get really frustrated with how he does things. So thankfully Rona is a lot better than that at me, so she builds with him and then. (0:08:27) Al: I have my sets that I build on my own, so it’s fun to see him build it Lego and he’s like really creative with it as well, with not obviously not the sets like you build the sets like you build the sets and he’s quite good at following the instructions and I think with this one because it was such a small set it was it worked well kind of going right here’s the piece Craig where does this piece go and he would look at the instructions put it on (0:08:53) Al: but when it’s like a bigger set it just drives me insane trying to do it I would be the same with (0:08:57) Al: right it’s it’s not about him it’s just about the fact that I’m a control freak right so I need to do it myself but yeah so Rona quite often buy like will buy sets that are like the Lego city and stuff like that that they build together which is basically his sets and when he’s a little bit older he’d probably just build them by himself but he enjoys building (0:09:14) Jonnie: Nice. Yeah, I did the… (0:09:20) Jonnie: Awesome, I did the Animal Crossing sets with my niece, who’s five, and (0:09:25) Jonnie: we had a lot of fun, but it was very much the like “I’m trying to follow the instructions” and she’s like “Let’s put this piece here because it looks cool” and it’s just… so it was a lot of chaos and then when she went home, I immediately took apart everything she’d done because it’s not how it’s supposed to be. (0:09:30) Al: I suspect I’ll let him play with these once I’m finished because I think he’ll have fun putting them together and making a story out of it. He has that creative aspect of things. (0:09:50) Al: But yeah, not while I’m building them. He enjoys playing like I did a bunch of Mario builds like the Bowser’s Airship was particularly fun. (0:10:00) Al: And he loves to play with that. (0:10:01) Al: So I’m totally fine with him playing with these things. (0:10:03) Al: It’s just like when I’m building it, I like to build it. (0:10:06) Al: And it’s like involving anybody in that process takes all the fun out of it for me, you know? (0:10:15) Jonnie: Yeah (0:10:17) Al: But the small make and take event was fun enough to do it. (0:10:21) Al: Because I went into it knowing, this is a me and Craig event. (0:10:24) Al: This is what we’re going to do. (0:10:27) Al: It’s small enough. (0:10:28) Al: It was like 25 pieces or something. (0:10:30) Al: Like that. So it’s small enough that you’re not kind of getting overly stressed about anything. (0:10:36) Al: The biggest stress was trying to find the pieces because you had 10 people crowded around a table with 25 different boxes of different pieces. It was, it was. I can understand why some people would just take the pieces and leave because it’s, yeah. But I was like, no, I want to get it done here. I think it’s fun and we’re here. Why not? So, yeah, it was good fun. (0:10:44) Jonnie: Yeah, in many ways that sounds like a nightmare. (0:11:00) Al: Should we talk about some news? We have, this is going to be the episode of updates because there are so many updates. I don’t know why this week has suddenly been the (0:11:11) Al: let’s post an update. But the first of the updates is Fae Farm. They have their spring update, (0:11:16) Al: which is out now. It looks like they have kind of three main things, which is stuff on stuff, (0:11:22) Al: where you can put like things on, you can put items on tables and other things, presumably. (0:11:31) Al: Yeah, it looks like you put things on tables, barrels, crates, desks, display stands, carts, (0:11:42) Al: and a stack of books. Or does that mean you can put a stack of books on a stack of books? (0:11:47) Al: Need to see how tall a stack of books you can make. (0:11:52) Al: They also have a bunch of new cosmetics. Yes. (0:11:52) Jonnie: A question for you, Al. (0:11:55) Jonnie: Are you like this is a sort of update that’s like some people get really excited about but I’m like (0:12:02) Jonnie: If I don’t get into that phase of the designing phase of a game it within my first playthrough It’s highly unlikely that I’m ever gonna get there and I don’t know that this is the sort of thing It’s gonna bring in where are you at in terms of like designing farms cuz I don’t know if it’s anything that we’ve really discussed that much (0:12:17) Al: Yeah, I think I’m not very good at designing things. I will, like if we think about the stardew run I’ve been doing just now, I have been laying out my farm in a very specific way, (0:12:32) Al: but it’s very much like as many straight lines as possible. So it’s like I want to be able to go (0:12:40) Al: from the entrance to my greenhouse in a straight line sort of thing. So I will build paths. (0:12:48) Al: And fences in a way that makes it easy for that to do. I’m not really the sort of person that’ll be like, “Oh yeah, here’s our five by five bit and then I’ll put some bushes between this five by five crop section and the next five by five.” I’m like, “No, I don’t really care about that.” (0:13:10) Al: I’m very much a do the things, not necessarily make it look nice. (0:13:18) Al: So yeah, I mean, the fact that you can now put things on a table is definitely not going to encourage me to come back to this game, nor the extra cosmetics and stuff like that. (0:13:28) Al: I mean, they do have a bunch of extra things in the character creator, which is obviously good. (0:13:32) Al: But I tell you, there’s one thing that could possibly bring me back, (0:13:37) Al: which is the double day length setting that they’ve added into the game. (0:13:42) Al: So the standard setting for Faith Arm is an 18 minute day. The double day gives you… (0:13:48) Al: 36 minutes. (0:13:50) Al: However, having said that, I always feel like days are too long at the beginning (0:13:55) Al: of a game and too short at the end of a game. Do I really want a 36 minute day (0:14:03) Al: when I have almost no stamina? (0:14:06) Jonnie: - Yeah, I don’t know, like, to be honest, in general, (0:14:09) Jonnie: I’m kind of like, I know this is becoming a standard feature. (0:14:14) Jonnie: I think this is a feature that actually does a disservice to a lot of these games. (0:14:20) Jonnie: Like I understand why people think they want a longer day, (0:14:26) Jonnie: but one of the big limitations I think in these sorts of games is that people don’t often get all the way through, you know, a year. (0:14:36) Jonnie: Yeah, I think you and Bev talked about in the last episode, like people don’t necessarily always get to year two, right? (0:14:42) Jonnie: It’s lucky, you know, people are like excited that they hit winter in these sorts of games. (0:14:48) Jonnie: And doubling the day length, I think, means that there’s a large portion of the games that people will miss out on. (0:14:53) Jonnie: Coral Island has this feature and it’s not something that I think is a great choice to put in. (0:15:06) Jonnie: Once you get into the flow of one of these games, about a, you know, that 15 to 20 minute day length is about the right length. (0:15:12) Jonnie: I just, yeah, I don’t, we played FIFA and never felt like I wanted a longer day but I (0:15:22) Al: yeah I mean I didn’t want a longer day in fey farm but that’s probably because I didn’t really want to be playing it like I think as we discussed at the time I think the biggest thing that i enjoyed about fey farm was the traversal which I still stand on I still think that more games need to do that better but that was I mean nothing else about that game made me go this is amazing I need to keep playing this in general so yeah I didn’t want the day to be longer for that - Yeah. (0:15:52) Al: And I’m the same person that, you know, (0:15:54) Al: in the last episode I talked about how I speed run the game at the beginning anyway, because there’s not enough energy (0:16:03) Al: to do what you want to do. (0:16:04) Al: So just get through it and you get to the next day and that’s fine, you can do it then. (0:16:12) Al: Oh, it’s Friday, I need to go to the traveling cart. (0:16:14) Al: Sorry, I’m not playing the game. (0:16:19) Al: Yeah, I think it’s interesting. (0:16:23) Al: Also, I think I am more leaning towards trying out new things like Sugar Jew, (0:16:31) Al: what is that game called? (0:16:32) Al: Sugar Jew Island? (0:16:35) Al: Goodness me, get a better name. (0:16:38) Al: And it’s lack of a specific amount of day anyway, (0:16:45) Al: like it’s just you play the day and then you finish the day when you want to finish the day sort of thing. (0:16:52) Al: So being something like that would probably be more interesting to me than just, oh, it’s a longer day. (0:16:58) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that makes sense. (0:17:00) Jonnie: I think I’m with you, and it’s something Cody and I talked about on the “Palea” episode there. (0:17:07) Jonnie: I think I’m kind of just a bit over the regular day/night cycle. (0:17:13) Jonnie: And I’m more interested in games that are trying something different or just more tied to real time and getting rid of stamina mechanics. (0:17:21) Jonnie: My favorite thing about “Palea” is still the fact that they– (0:17:24) Jonnie: instead of stamina being this limiting thing, (0:17:26) Jonnie: They have a similar mechanic. (0:17:28) Jonnie: But it gets you more rewards for having high stamina and you just eat food to replenish it. (0:17:34) Jonnie: To me, that’s one of the best stamina variations that exist. (0:17:40) Al: Yeah, definitely try new things, let’s see what you can do. (0:17:45) Al: It does look like this setting is something you can change as you’re playing, so it’s the sort of thing I could definitely see myself going, oh, just having the normal day length, (0:17:53) Al: but then if I’m getting close to a point in the minds that I want to, just making the day longer at that point, I could see myself doing something like that. (0:18:02) Jonnie: Yeah, but even then the mines like the they’re not (0:18:08) Jonnie: The time is not a real limiting factor for them right because it’s because you can teleport to every floor (0:18:10) Al: I think it depends. I think, sure, okay, but wait, okay. More thinking, Skull Cavern. Like if you’re trying to go get Iridium, which is the thing that becomes a real limiting thing in these games at some point, is you need to go to Skull Cavern. And if you are, (0:18:35) Al: you know, 70 levels down, you’re getting really close to the area where there’s lots of stuff (0:18:40) Al: you’ve probably brought a bunch of food to keep your stamina up. There’s no way for you to extend the time that you can be down there for. And there’s a whole bunch of other stuff as well, (0:18:53) Al: but there’s stuff around characters and relationships. I’m sure they’ve not (0:18:58) Jonnie: I agree, look, I think where I’m at at Fae farmers, like we played it for the show, I thought there was a lot of potential there, but ultimately the game fell flat and there’s just so much else coming out, I can’t say that. (0:19:11) Al: Yeah, I still have, I bought the game physically and I still have it in my pile here and every time I go to sell some games, I’m like, I don’t think I’m going to play it, but I feel like I want to keep it just in case, but then I keep not playing it. So I think I need to set a deadline on myself. If I’ve not played it by me, then I get rid of it. I couldn’t, (0:19:38) Al: I, oh, no, I. (0:19:41) Al: I need to double check what there was a video and they said the name of the game and it was different. Ikone. It said, yes, so the it’s Ikone. That is what the video said Ikone. (0:19:48) Jonnie: I would guess, which is always a safe thing to do with pronunciation, econy? (0:19:58) Al: Ikone Island. So there you go. Finally learned I’ve been saying this name wrong the whole time. (0:20:06) Al: Ikone Island have released their Blooming Beginnings update. (0:20:11) Al: This marks the time where they are also out on PlayStation and Xbox. (0:20:16) Al: It looks like there’s lots of small things. The only kind of big thing that I can see is they have completely redone their UI. So if you have played this game, (0:20:27) Al: get ready to be annoyed by it changing. That’s my experience with with the The UI is changing and games is just being frustrated with it, even if it’s better. (0:20:40) Jonnie: Correct because you get used to whatever terrible things have been done and then it changes and your brain has to reset (0:20:47) Jonnie: It’s why it’s why UI is one of the most difficult things to get right in games (0:20:50) Al: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think that’s kind of all I really want to talk about there. The patch notes are in the show notes. If you have played it and you want to go look at it. (0:21:03) Jonnie: I think it’s cool that it’s out on PlayStation Xbox, this is kind of one that was like on the back burner of my mind (0:21:09) Jonnie: Just because I think I prefer playing these games on on a console and so now that it’s on a console It’s something I’m like thinking about a little bit more (0:21:18) Al: Yes, and hopefully them releasing it at the same time as an update means that they’re going to then continue with updates coming to both at the same time. That’s always, I mean, that’s the advantage of bigger teams. (0:21:31) Jonnie: - Yeah, that would be… (0:21:35) Al: Steam World Build also have an update. Mechanical Meadows, they have a lovely little (0:21:44) Al: six bullet points of the things that they’ve added. They’ve added 11 player placeable decors, (0:21:50) Al: five environment decors, 10 mine decors, three agent decors, one tumbleweed, (0:21:58) Al: and one custom light and post. There you go, lots of things to decorate. (0:22:06) Al: Oh, that should be decor then, isn’t it? (0:22:08) Al: That’s why, that’s what that word is. (0:22:11) Al: That’s just the start of decorate, isn’t it? (0:22:13) Al: Decor, decorate. (0:22:14) Jonnie: I said your pronunciation, it was funny because your pronunciation was like just marginally off not but not enough that I was like not enough to mention it until we’ve now mentioned it (0:22:22) Al: I think I… I think I said “decor”, didn’t I? But it’s… If it’s short for “decoration”, (0:22:28) Jonnie: uh yeah yeah I was like ah whatever it’s (0:22:32) Al: I don’t say “decoration”, so it would be “decoration decor”. Anyway, if you want to decorate your town, I guess it’s a town? In Steam World Build? That’s out now. Speaking of updates, (0:22:42) Jonnie: I don’t know. Yeah, it must be town. (0:22:48) Al: Cali also have an update. They’re 0.17 (0:22:52) Al: update is out now. I mean at this point just call it update 178. I don’t know why it’s 0 point, right? People are so obsessed with 1.0 I don’t think it means anything. Just give us the number. It’s just update 178. (0:23:07) Al: Do you think you’re suddenly at 1 point going to go to 1.0? You’re not gonna do that when you’re at 0.178. (0:23:16) Jonnie: They will but they’re just gonna go at that after like, you know update 197 or something (0:23:20) Al: The theme of this patch is all about spring. They have added the temple of the roots, which is a new temple. Is temples a big thing in Palia? I still haven’t played it. (0:23:35) Jonnie: Yeah, so so temples are temples are kind of the big thing and it was missing one (0:23:42) Jonnie: They could always add more but the the setup was (0:23:43) Al: Well, well, yes, it says it says it won’t be the last temple, but they’re not going to say anything else about that now. (0:23:45) Jonnie: was for (0:23:49) Jonnie: Yeah (0:23:51) Al: That’s what it says in the in the thing. (0:23:52) Al: So. (0:23:53) Jonnie: No, that’s that’s not a surprise they’re kind of like the so they’re that they’re effectively like the big dungeons that a lot of the story (0:24:01) Jonnie: hangs off of in in Palia (0:24:05) Jonnie: They are interesting because it’s interesting to see the implementation of dungeons in a game with no combat (0:24:11) Jonnie: And some of them I think are really good (0:24:12) Al: Oh, there’s no combat in this. (0:24:17) Jonnie: Yeah, oh, I guess there technically is if you want to think of hunting (0:24:22) Jonnie: Animals and you know one-sided murder as combat, but there is nothing that attacks you back I guess (0:24:25) Al: One-sided murder. (0:24:32) Jonnie: Yeah (0:24:33) Al: I think that’s just called murder. (0:24:35) Jonnie: I Mean I guess but but you could always like you could try to move to someone and they can fight back right like this (0:24:37) Al: Yes, that’s not two-sided murder. (0:24:44) Al: That’s just not murder. (0:24:46) Al: That’s called attacking someone. (0:24:48) Al: It’s not murder. (0:24:50) Al: Oh dear. (0:24:50) Jonnie: Yeah okay, that’s fair. Look, it’s very early, and I’m saying things that barely make sense, so… (0:24:55) Al: [LAUGH] Fair enough. (0:25:03) Jonnie: But yeah, there is nothing that can attack you in the game, is probably the point. So I’m interested to see another dungeon of roots kind of make sense in the theming that all of the dungeons have been and what we got so far. I think there’s like a wind one. (0:25:20) Jonnie: There’s a lava one. There’s the first one that is kind of quite short and basic, and I don’t really remember if it had a theme or if the theme was “Hey, it’s a dungeon”. Yeah, a little bit, (0:25:30) Al: Was… yeah, was the theme tutorial. (0:25:36) Jonnie: if I remember rightly. So I haven’t really jumped back into Pahlia since we did the episode, (0:25:45) Jonnie: because it kind of felt like there was features missing, and I was waiting. (0:25:51) Jonnie: And this is getting me pretty close to thinking like “Okay, there’s probably enough stuff that’s been added that it might be a good time to jump back in and see what’s different in Pahlia.” (0:26:00) Al: That’s always the problem with these lots of little updates, right? Like with Stardew, (0:26:05) Al: it’s been like two and a half years since the last update. And so, you know, if you want to jump in, (0:26:11) Al: now’s the time to jump in with all these like little updates every month or two. You’re like, (0:26:18) Al: “Well, what point do I do this?” And I understand why they do it, right? Because if you’re, (0:26:23) Al: well, first of all, it’s obviously a game that they want to encourage people to be constantly playing, right? Like, that’s just how they’re doing things. (0:26:31) Al: But equally, they just want people to have stuff if they want to continue playing the game all the time, right? (0:26:37) Al: Like, there’s always new stuff for people. (0:26:41) Jonnie: Yeah, I think that’s a good point. I do consider there to be a bit of a difference though, like Stardew can afford to do that because it has such great brand recognition that a big update will cut through a lot of things and people are likely to jump back in. (0:26:59) Jonnie: I don’t know that that’s as true for a game like Palia. Like I don’t know if there’s as much benefit for them to have a big update versus a bunch of little updates and hope that people pick up like, (0:27:11) Jonnie: but I see Palia pop up from time to time. It seems like they’re doing a lot in that game, so maybe it’s worth checking out. (0:27:18) Jonnie: I wonder if there’s sort of two different approaches that can both work based on the size and cut through. (0:27:23) Al: That’s fair, but it doesn’t need to be, you know, either you do it every two and a half years or you do it every two months, right? You can have a… you can do it every six months and have bigger updates that way, right? Like, and I don’t think that would… I don’t think suddenly people are going to forget that your game exists if you take six months (0:27:44) Jonnie: Yeah, I think with weird games like Palia or Ato, I would rather have, particularly if I’m playing that game, I would rather just have consistent updates, because there’s still, you know, there’s still enough phase where there’s lots of little quality of life things and I wouldn’t like them to sit on that for six months to wait for a new temple to be done, right? (0:28:01) Jonnie: I would rather just have some of those stuffs built. (0:28:04) Al: Yeah, that’s fair. I mean, I guess you know being an online game. It’s it’s always gonna be slightly different anyway (0:28:11) Jonnie: - Yeah, and I guess to your point though, (0:28:13) Jonnie: I have been kind of ignoring a lot of their small updates because it’s just quality of life, (0:28:18) Jonnie: waiting to see something like this. (0:28:20) Jonnie: And I’m like, oh, okay, now they’ve got a new temple out. (0:28:23) Jonnie: This is the time that I personally want to jump back in (0:28:28) Al: Yeah. Yeah, I don’t think there’s an easy answer to these things. I just think it’s interesting. (0:28:36) Al: They also have climbing updates. I don’t know what that means. It doesn’t really describe (0:28:42) Jonnie: Yeah, I’m… (0:28:44) Al: just an improvement to climbing and traversal in the game. (0:28:49) Jonnie: Climbing was pretty… (0:28:54) Jonnie: I wonder if it’s just making it a little bit easier to understand, ‘cause you can climb up a lot of surfaces, (0:28:59) Jonnie: if I remember rightly. (0:29:01) Jonnie: It felt a little bit janky, but I don’t remember it feeling bad, maybe a bit slow, but it also wasn’t something… (0:29:05) Al: Yeah, I literally no idea what they’re talking about here because they just say we’ll be adding in the first of several changes behind the scenes that ultimately will result in an improvement to climbing. It doesn’t describe what is this. (0:29:20) Jonnie: Yeah, so I would guess that’s probably just more about the way like climbing was a little bit janky when you’re trying to get in and out of this, like just a little bit of like running into walls and stuff like that. (0:29:30) Jonnie: So hopefully it just feels a little bit more seamless. (0:29:32) Jonnie: But to be honest, climbing was one of those things that existed in the game, but you don’t really need it that much from a traversal perspective. (0:29:39) Jonnie: So it’s not like it’s huge, and maybe some of that’s because it felt janky, but I think I think this would just be one of those things that’s like, (0:29:48) Jonnie: if they didn’t say it, you would just be like, (0:29:50) Jonnie: this feels slightly better, but you wouldn’t actually notice when, right? (0:29:54) Al: yeah. And they have also - I just lost my tab - added in some placeable flowers and trees and more decor and outfits. (0:29:55) Jonnie: So, that’s cool. (0:30:12) Jonnie: Cool. (0:30:14) Al: So again, probably something you don’t care about based on our previous conversation. (0:30:14) Jonnie: Um, Hank? (0:30:18) Al: You’re not going to jump in and do a bunch of stuff with that, but good for the people who do care about, making their own. (0:30:26) Jonnie: Yeah, I am curious with the new outfits. So a lot of the outfits early in the game were (0:30:39) Jonnie: microtransactions, right? So you paid a premium currency for them, which to be clear is not a criticism. It was an effective way of monetizing the game, right? You can spend money if you’re really into this and have your character model look a bit different, but it doesn’t actually impact anything else in the game. (0:30:56) Jonnie: So when they say new outfits, I’m curious if they mean a wider range of outfits that you don’t have to pay for, or we’ve put in new things for you to buy. (0:31:05) Al: Yeah, good question. They don’t specify. So I guess we’ll need to see. (0:31:10) Jonnie: Yeah, but I will say I’m very excited for this update, and I might be jumping back into some more palettes soon. (0:31:18) Al: Speaking of updates. This is our last update, I promise. So many updates. Oh my word, everybody’s updating. (0:31:22) Jonnie: Just every transition, just speaking of updates. (0:31:27) Jonnie: Look, we could even use this transition in the main topic. (0:31:31) Al: Travellers Rest have their fishing update out now as well. I do need to clarify something I said wrong in the last episode. I said that… I’m pretty sure I said that fishing is an update to the fishing not the not that the fishing is new turns out that’s wrong fishing is new so there wasn’t fishing before this update now there is fishing before this update so yet another question of what was even in this game and so there we go fishing now in travel (0:32:08) Jonnie: Yeah, look, the “What is this game?” question is mostly just… (0:32:14) Jonnie: Every time I see an update, I’m very confused as to what this game had in it when it launched. (0:32:18) Jonnie: Because from what I can gather, it was nothing. You had a character model, and that was it. (0:32:24) Al: Yeah, because it didn’t have fishing, it didn’t have farming, it didn’t have your bar, which is the whole point of it. It’s an inn, you’re running an inn, and the inn didn’t serve drinks. (0:32:36) Al: So yeah, I really don’t know what the game had, but. Oh, I don’t even. (0:32:38) Jonnie: Maybe just maybe just hit romance [cries] (0:32:46) Al: Sugardew Island, please don’t add romance, I beg of you. I’m going to say this every episode now, please don’t do it. (0:32:54) Al: I know. Yeah, and there’s a trailer for the fishing update. So (0:33:01) Al: go have a look at that. That will be in the show notes. (0:33:05) Al: And the last piece of game news before the last piece of news is very much not news, (0:33:15) Al: but we’re talking about it anyway, because I mean, let’s be honest, especially on an episode with me and you Johnny, we’re going to take any opportunity to talk about this game is that we (0:33:24) Al: have a new, would you call this a trailer? A new, very small, well even it’s a video with sound and it shows, I don’t know, it’s not even, it doesn’t even feel like it’s long enough to count as a teaser. Yeah, it’s an animated picture, that’s what it is, but with a little bit of sound in the background. This is Tales of the Shire. (0:33:28) Jonnie: No. (0:33:42) Jonnie: It’s basically one step removed from just being a picture. (0:33:54) Al: I realised I hadn’t said the name of the game, so Tales of the Shire, which I feel like - so now underneath says “A Lord of the Rings game”. I feel like it didn’t say that in the previous stuff, but I might just not be remembering that. (0:34:06) Jonnie: I do not recall, but hopefully, you know, that’s obvious, but… (0:34:09) Al: It did. It did, because I was just talking nonsense. So yeah. There’s nothing new. They’ve just decided to remind us that the game is coming. And the replies are full of people (0:34:24) Al: give us a game please. So it’s meant to be coming this year. Still literally no information about the game, no screenshots, no nothing. Just it’s coming. (0:34:34) Jonnie: Yep, look, I’m very rapidly getting to the point of like, I will believe this game is coming when we actually, you know, get a release date, like, and, you know, some, some information I just, I just don’t want to become like those Silksong fans right who are like, it’s coming. (0:34:52) Jonnie: It’s coming. Trust me, it’s coming. We’re so excited. It’s coming and like, that game doesn’t exist. (0:34:58) Al: To be fair, I think we have more about this game than we do about Silksong, to be fair. (0:34:58) Jonnie: And that’s, that’s, that is entirely… (0:35:04) Jonnie: I just don’t want to get too excited until until we actually see some details, right, we have something to dig in. So, I mean, it’s good news that they’re posting and, you know, posting a thing because it does mean that the game still exists. (0:35:18) Jonnie: So, yeah, but, but there’s nothing to talk about. (0:35:18) Al: It’s been six months. It’s been six months since they announced the game and this is their first thing since that right six months ago They said hey, this is a game and we went collectively ah (0:35:30) Al: This is a game and now six months later. We’re getting the same information (0:35:36) Al: This is a game with I guess a slightly more detailed image, but it’s still not a screenshot or anything (0:35:44) Jonnie: No. (0:35:46) Jonnie: Definitely not. (0:35:46) Jonnie: Do you want to spend half an hour, like, analyzing every aspect of the image, or show you? (0:35:52) Al: Well, I see people in the comments speculating on characters in the game, (0:36:00) Al: but that would require us knowing the time in which this game is happening. (0:36:06) Jonnie: Yeah, I feel like, you know, pretty much any of this requires like a knowledge of, you know, anything related to this game, and we have none of that, so… (0:36:14) Al: So I do think this game will have fishing, cause I see someone fishing, so sorry about that. (0:36:20) Jonnie: I feel like that is so I am anti-fishing because I just don’t think it’s necessary in a lot of games I (0:36:28) Jonnie: think for a lot of the rings game it would be kind of silly to not have fishing given that like (0:36:35) Jonnie: It’s part of some of their (0:36:38) Jonnie: their law to an extent right like when (0:36:44) Jonnie: Smeagol found the ring they were in a boat, and I’m pretty sure they were fishing Um… (0:36:50) Jonnie: You know, so it’s it’s established that hobbits fish so I think I think (0:36:56) Al: I also see a chicken and a sheep, so presumably you will have ranching in the game. (0:37:03) Al: I also see what is either presumably a duck with a helmet on. (0:37:10) Al: And I’m very interested as to what that is about. (0:37:10) Jonnie: Maybe it just wants to feel… (0:37:13) Al: Why does a duck need armour? (0:37:19) Al: I mean, in the Shire, the safest place ever. (0:37:23) Al: I’m intrigued by that. (0:37:26) Al: There’s a bunch of different foods, cooked foods. (0:37:29) Al: So presumably they will be cooking in this game as well. (0:37:31) Jonnie: Oh my god, sorry, I just looked up there, that duck is super cute. (0:37:36) Jonnie: I’m a big fan of him wearing a helmet, like I don’t know. (0:37:38) Jonnie: I don’t understand what your problem is now. (0:37:39) Jonnie: Why, why are you so anti this? (0:37:42) Al: I’m not, not against the duck. (0:37:45) Al: I see a horse in the background. (0:37:48) Al: Yeah, OK, I’m done. (0:37:51) Al: There’s only so much we can talk about this game. (0:37:54) Al: Let’s overanalyze about something. (0:37:57) Al: Just before we talk about Stardew, we’re going to get there very soon, I promise. (0:38:02) Al: I know that’s why you’re all here this episode. (0:38:05) Al: But before that, we need to talk about the fact that Sakuna of Rice and Run is getting an anime. (0:38:14) Al: And I don’t know what to think about this. (0:38:14) Jonnie: I… I don’t know what any of this means. (0:38:19) Al: So Sakuna of Rice and Run, the game which was the (0:38:23) Al: ridiculously unnecessarily realistic. (0:38:26) Al: Rice growing game where you are, I mean Sakuna is basically like a god, I think, (0:38:35) Al: who was stripped of her powers and sent down to earth. I know, I know, it’s classic. (0:38:40) Al: And then you have to farm rice. I’m not sure why I really, really didn’t play that game very much. I apparently they’re making anime for it, so maybe I will watch that and finally understand the story, rather than having to play the game again. You’ve literally nothing to say. All right, let’s get into trouble talking about something else, which is Stardew Valley 1.6. It’s finally here, it is now out on PC, Mac, Linux, Steam. (0:39:00) Jonnie: Cool I have like I have literally I I know nothing about any of this I have nothing to say and I if I say anything I’m just gonna get myself into trouble (0:39:26) Al: GOG, all of the non-console places you can get it, which I mean is basically just Steam. Okay, yeah, not on console or mobile. Yeah, tablet, etc. I have been playing it on my Steam deck. What have you been playing it on, Johnny? (0:39:35) Jonnie: Also not on. (0:39:54) Jonnie: Ah, just on my laptop. (0:39:56) Al: Fair enough. We will have a link to the patch notes in the show notes if you want to go and have a look at them. There will obviously be spoilers in that. And if you want to play this game without having any information about the game, maybe stop listening to this episode now and come back when you’ve played it. Because we’re going to talk about a lot of things that we found, some things that are very obvious and some things that are maybe not as obvious. (0:40:23) Al: There’s not many, like, story-related things. (0:40:26) Al: But I know a lot of people are finding it fun to kind of go and find all the new stuff without knowing that it’s there. (0:40:36) Al: So if you’re that kind of person, you’re probably already turned off. (0:40:40) Al: So I think we need to start off, Johnny, by talking about the new farm layout. (0:40:46) Al: I obviously chose that. (0:40:46) Jonnie: I did. (0:40:47) Al: I think you chose the new farm layout as well, didn’t you? (0:40:51) Al: So you start out by getting your new farm late. (0:40:56) Al: It’s got a lot of water. (0:41:00) Al: It’s got like a big river that goes through it and a couple of small ponds. (0:41:04) Al: And there’s a lot of grass on it to start with and a lot of trees. (0:41:08) Al: But you also start up with a coop and two chickens. (0:41:11) Al: And (0:41:13) Al: this shouldn’t be surprising, but I was a little bit surprised when you wake up and you open up the package in your house and there aren’t parsnip seeds. (0:41:19) Al: There’s hay there instead. (0:41:21) Al: And it makes sense based on the farm, but I wasn’t expecting that. (0:41:24) Al: It was quite a fun. (0:41:26) Al: difference to be like, oh, this is not the same as what I’ve played before. (0:41:30) Jonnie: Yeah, I really liked it like it was just a nice indication of oh, this is actually different right and it was just one of those really clever little things of like (0:41:41) Jonnie: You know just just change that little brain itch to be like, hey, this is this is subtly (0:41:46) Jonnie: Not quite what you what you’re used to (0:41:50) Al: And your first quest, instead of growing parsnips, is get an egg from your chicken, which, yeah, (0:41:56) Al: is good fun. (0:41:59) Al: I also noticed there’s a lot of hardwood in this farm, and there’s the two different kinds of stumps. (0:42:05) Al: You have both of the two stumps. (0:42:07) Al: So you can get hardwood really quickly because you’ve got the big logs that you can only get with, I think, the golden axe, which, you know, there’s one (0:42:20) Al: of them to get into the other wood, the other forest that you can get the other stumps from. (0:42:27) Al: But the smaller, the stumps, rather than the log, you can get with an iron axe. (0:42:37) Al: But in normal games, you can’t actually access those ones because you have to have the gold one to get into the area that has those stumps. (0:42:45) Al: So it was quite fun. (0:42:46) Al: farm, you’ve got both of those so you can get hardwood as soon (0:42:50) Al: as you’ve got your second level of axe. (0:42:54) Jonnie: Yeah, it’s a nice little upgrade to to the farm and to the progression within a within a new server (0:43:04) Al: So, I think this is quite an animal-focused farm, obviously. There’s still a decent amount of area you can use for farming crops, but I think the idea of this one is you’re generally meant to be using animals, which I quite like because I’ve always been kind of like get animals as quickly as possible because they’re a steady thing. Without having to put much money into them, you can get regular money, right? You can very quickly get like several Programmed a day without… (0:43:34) Al: Putting any money into it (0:43:37) Al: After the initial cast obviously [clears throat] (0:43:40) Jonnie: Yeah, I I really like this as a set up I think a lot of these games I’m like I would I always go in with the intent of like I would like to do a (0:43:51) Jonnie: An animal based farm But by the time you get all of the set up to get the money to get the animals (0:43:57) Jonnie: You have a pretty decent regular farming setup And at that point transitioning to animals feels like it’s gonna waste a lot of well not not waste money (0:44:06) Jonnie: but you’re kind of like (0:44:10) Jonnie: Back in terms of progress a lot so you kind of just keep going with the farming and animals always kind of feel like this thing off to the side And putting them front and center is (0:44:20) Al: Yeah, agreed. I think it’s also, it’s made me more money focused. And this is where I admit on the podcast that I have gone the Joja route this time. So let me explain. Let me explain. Let me explain. Don’t worry. Right. Okay. Well, okay. How about before I explain myself, let me, let me tell you that I feel really bad about what I’ve done, especially (0:44:30) Jonnie: What? (0:44:33) Jonnie: Ow. Ow. (0:44:35) Jonnie: No, no, I’m just gonna sit here and judge you and talk over the start of your sentences. (0:44:50) Al: what, so I’ve, I’ve completed the Joja warehouse version of the community center. Right. I’ve got all of those upgrades. And let me tell you the cut scene where you’ve, when you’ve done that and you walk into the area and you go up to the Joja warehouse and all of the staff are out applauding you and you get told what a wonderful person you are for doing all this, it felt so bad. I was like, Oh no. (0:45:20) Al: What have I done? This is terrible. Um, was not a fan of that. Uh, but the reason why I did this is because I wanted to focus on money as any good capitalist does. And I wanted not to have to think about the bundles for once. And I thought it would be fun. I feel like as a professional. (0:45:50) Al: I’m a farming game podcaster. I need to understand all aspects of this game, and that includes doing the Jojo route. (0:46:00) Al: So that is my defense of myself. (0:46:01) Jonnie: So look this is where I’m gonna say I did not follow the Jojo route and that is so far is my biggest criticism of the 1.6 update is the bundles do not really work for the new farm (0:46:18) Jonnie: because you have the second set of bundles, the crop bundles, and all of a sudden you’re kind of reminded of, oh, I still have to actually engage. (0:46:31) Jonnie: With the farming piece, and look, I think, you know, getting a pass nip, a cauliflower, whatever is fine, but having five of the gold ones for that bundle, it was a huge disappointment that that hadn’t been changed to, uh, like five high quality animal products, right? (0:46:50) Jonnie: Like five gold lard jigs or something like that, um, because I got to like day, you know, 10 or 11 or whatever it was when I started to like, think about the community center. (0:47:01) Jonnie: And I get some of those things unlocked and I was like, oh, well, I’m probably not gonna hit the, the five gold pass nips, you know, this, this month. (0:47:12) Jonnie: And I don’t really want to try the five gold balance and it was a bit disappointing and I kind of wish that. (0:47:18) Al: Yeah, yeah, it’s interesting. I wonder, have you ever looked at the remixed bundles (0:47:28) Al: for the community centre? Because I know there is an option to do the remixed ones, but I don’t know. (0:47:34) Al: Ah, no, you’re still required. The quality crops bundle still exists. But it looks like there’s multiple different possible ones you can have, but you still have to have some gold crops. (0:47:47) Al: So, yeah. (0:47:48) Al: Yeah, I think it could be could have been fun to have done stuff like that. (0:47:53) Al: But this is where you have the option just to go the Georgia route. (0:47:56) Al: You can do it. (0:47:57) Al: It’s a thing you can do, you know. (0:48:00) Jonnie: Yeah, look, I think it’s the right thing to do. (0:48:01) Al: And you’re. (0:48:08) Al: Yes, I agree. (0:48:11) Al: It’s a good thing to do. (0:48:12) Al: Go the Georgia route. (0:48:14) Al: You definitely won’t feel bad and you definitely won’t have your friends saying, (0:48:17) Al: What have you done when the achievement comes? (0:48:19) Al: Which happened to me today? (0:48:24) Al: Kelly noticed that I got the achievement yesterday, and they were very disappointed in me. (0:48:32) Al: show. (0:48:34) Jonnie: I mean, look, they were right to be disappointed, but what’s the point in friends if you don’t have money? (0:48:40) Al: Exactly, exactly. So I think it’s been quite fun doing that, it makes you think about the game differently. (0:48:50) Al: And I do think that if you’re playing your first stardew through, the bundles is a really good way to be like, (0:48:58) Al: here are all the different things you can do in the game, do them all please. I think that’s really fun. (0:49:04) Al: But also as someone who’s played this game, hundreds and hundreds of hours, just going. (0:49:10) Al: I’m going to do as much as I can to make as much money as possible, as quickly as possible, and unlock as much of it as possible. (0:49:18) Al: I’m currently in winter of year one, I’ve not even finished the first year yet, and I have completed all of that. (0:49:26) Al: All five of the things to unlock with the community centre of Georgia, which is fun. (0:49:36) Al: like being at that point. It’s really hard to do that in… (0:49:40) Al: In fact, it’s impossible in year one unless you have the setting to make it possible in year one. (0:49:45) Al: So you have to wait till the second year. (0:49:48) Al: And even if you do have that setting on, it’s still really hard because you have to go really hard on the crops. (0:49:54) Al: Gold crops aren’t very easy to get. (0:49:59) Al: So yeah, that’s fun. It’ll be interesting to see. I know that the… (0:50:03) Al: I know that Ginger Island has some Georgia stuff in it as well if you go that route. (0:50:07) Al: it will be interesting to see that, although I’ve still never been to Georgia Island. (0:50:10) Al: I’m currently grinding to get the bars to unlock the boat to get to Georgia, to get to Ginger Island. (0:50:24) Al: As usual, I’ve hit my wall is I’m at Skull Cavern and trying to get as much of the ore as possible to actually get what I want. (0:50:34) Al: That’s always my frustration with this game, is I love everything about this game. (0:50:37) Al: I hate skull cavern. (0:50:38) Al: I hate trying to get. (0:50:41) Al: Why have I forgotten the name of this? (0:50:43) Al: What’s it called again? (0:50:44) Al: The purple stuff. (0:50:45) Al: Iridium. (0:50:45) Al: Yeah. (0:50:46) Al: I, I hate getting Iridium. (0:50:48) Al: It is the thing I, I just cannot stand with this game. (0:50:52) Al: So maybe I’ll just try and focus on doing year two as quickly as possible while getting enough to, to pass granddad’s test and then get the, the (0:51:14) Jonnie: Yeah, that sounds like a good plan, and I’m right there with you. I’m not a fan of Skull Kid, and I think the combat’s just not good enough in a game like this to really support what they’re trying to do. (0:51:27) Al: Yeah I think at this point you just you have to just save up as much stone as you can to get (0:51:35) Al: stairs to go down as quickly as you can find as much ore. Yeah it’s not the best and especially having played Coral Island like Coral Island I feel like has the balance better in terms of the minds and getting to know them. (0:51:57) Al: I’m getting the max of the, I can’t remember what they call their, they have another name for their above gold one, something like that. (0:52:08) Jonnie: Uhm, Oricallium. (0:52:12) Jonnie: Uhm, yeah, because I just recently completed the, uh, the mines in, uhm, in Coral Island and I think that was just significantly better, the accessibility of the, the fourth tier, uhm, or was, it was just way more plentiful, right? (0:52:28) Jonnie: And it was just like, cool, this is nice, like it’s just the next version of it, it’s the next level of progression and it doesn’t feel horrendous, like, yeah. (0:52:36) Al: Yeah and it doesn’t need to be easy, I think it just needs to be not horrifically difficult and (0:52:43) Al: certainly nothing in this update has made it any easier and I think it’s the thing that frustrates me most about this game that I would really like slightly changed. Obviously there is the thing you can get from your grandad when you’ve got a certain amount of stuff after year two but (0:52:59) Al: that only gives you a few per day which is obviously better than nothing but yeah it’s It’s just, it’s so slow to get. (0:53:06) Al: And to get to Ginger Island, you need 5 bars, which is 25 iridium ore. (0:53:12) Al: And obviously that then implies you haven’t used it for anything else. (0:53:16) Al: And you need, yeah, ugh, iridium. (0:53:20) Al: Need iridium. (0:53:22) Al: So, we’ll see. (0:53:26) Al: Um, okay, farm, anything else to say about the new farm? (0:53:30) Al: I think, oh yes, I had one small thing. (0:53:32) Al: very niche, but the layout of it is much easier. (0:53:36) Al: To line things up for paths and crops. (0:53:38) Al: One thing that really frustrates me about the, about Stardew is how (0:53:44) Al: things don’t overlap in the way that they should, right? (0:53:47) Al: So for example, in the greenhouse, it’s not a perfect number of (0:53:52) Al: the biggest sprinkler, right? (0:53:56) Al: It’s like 2.5 sprinklers wide and tall. (0:54:01) Al: And that, and the farm, if you have a path (0:54:06) Al: going from the entrance to the farm left, you’ll not line up nicely with things. (0:54:12) Al: And if you want to come down from the top to the bottom, (0:54:16) Al: you can’t just have one path that goes all the way down from the entrance. (0:54:20) Al: Like these things are really niche and probably don’t annoy many people, (0:54:24) Al: but they annoys me and I find the layout of this one is much easier to make it (0:54:30) Jonnie: I agree. I really like the layo

My name is Codey and we’re here today to talk about cottagecore games. (0:00:35) Jonny: And my name is Jonnie. (0:00:37) Jonny: Woo! (0:00:41) Codey: Woo! As always transcripts are available in the show notes and on the website and today’s topic is Fae Farm. Woo! (0:01:00) Codey: So I am an added human on this so I was not initially on Fae Farm so I did not play the game but I am here to ask Johnny all of the very important questions about Fae Farm and make sure that we get all the coverage. You’re gonna get grilled. Did you prepare for the test? Did you study for the test? (0:01:24) Jonny: I prepared for all of my other school tests. (0:01:26) Codey: You [laughs] (0:01:30) Codey: - What was your scores on most tests? (0:01:34) Codey: Okay. (0:01:38) Codey: Well, that’s great. (0:01:40) Codey: So, yeah, you’re gonna do great. (0:01:42) Codey: Okay, so we’re gonna talk about Faith Farm. (0:01:46) Codey: And before that, we have some news to go over. (0:01:49) Codey: Concerned Ape just trying to dominate the news cycle as always. (0:01:53) Codey: But before that, Johnny, what have you been up to? (0:01:56) Jonny: have I been up to? This is a game that I really like, and it’s called Cassette Beasts, and this week they came out with their DLC. I should have looked up the name of the DLC, it’s like Pair of the Unknown, or something to that effect, and it’s excellent. If you like Cassette Beasts, (0:02:14) Jonny: which everybody should like Cassette Beasts, this is more Cassette Beasts. It doesn’t. (0:02:20) Jonny: It adds stuff in the way you want DLC to add stuff, where it’s like, that’s cool, (0:02:25) Jonny: extra world build. (0:02:26) Jonny: I’m playing it on Xbox. (0:02:27) Jonny: I think I did play it initially on Game Pass, and then I enjoyed it so much. (0:02:41) Codey: What are you playing it on? (0:02:46) Codey: Okay. (0:02:47) Codey: With the game pass. (0:02:55) Jonny: I just wanted to. (0:02:56) Jonny: I don’t think the DLC is available through Game Pass, I think you have to buy that separately. (0:03:09) Jonny: And the game is only like, the game is really cheap. (0:03:13) Jonny: I get the feeling it’s like 25 bucks in New Zealand, which would put it like, probably below. (0:03:20) Codey: Yeah, so I’m seeing it on Steam, it’s $20, but less, it’s currently 25% off. (0:03:29) Jonny: Yeah, so I think it’s the same thing on Xbox, I think there’s a sale on there, so… (0:03:33) Jonny: Um, yeah, it’s just like, if you like Pokémon, and you know, you want to play a game that’s actually fun, um, play Cassette Beasts and don’t play Pokémon. (0:03:41) Codey: Oh, the developer is currently playing right now on something, I don’t know what this is. (0:03:51) Jonny: that was really dangerous to tell me why we’re in the middle of recording an episode you should play cassette beasts but I keep saying that to everybody so anyway I feel like that’s all I’ve really been really been doing oh the idea of the thing is like Marvel snap which we very occasionally talk about on the show is still really good and really fun. (0:03:52) Codey: Yeah, I have. (0:03:53) Codey: I’m sorry, we’ll try and get through this really quickly. (0:04:00) Codey: But yeah, I have not played Cassette Beast, I’m sorry. (0:04:07) Codey: I know I should. (0:04:14) Codey: Okay. (0:04:18) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:04:20) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:04:21) Jonny: I’m still sticking with that, and I feel like it’s way longer than I expected to stick with a mobile card game, but it’s just very good, very fun. (0:04:32) Codey: big enjoing. (0:04:33) Codey: Okay, yeah, I don’t play that either. (0:04:38) Codey: ‘Cause that beast looks really cute though. (0:04:40) Codey: If I had time to play a game on like a console, (0:04:45) Codey: that would be what I would probably be playing. (0:04:47) Jonny: Yeah. What have you been up to? (0:04:47) Codey: I have been up to insect stuff, woo. (0:04:52) Codey: So I had, I went and harassed legislators (0:04:59) Codey: the state capitol last week. (0:05:02) Codey: and was like, “hey, we need people to support insects and insect conservation and no one’s in charge of that right now.” (0:05:08) Codey: and that’s an issue. (0:05:09) Codey: and I got three of them to say, “yes, that is an issue. Let’s write legislation to make it someone’s problem.” (0:05:15) Codey: So that’s cool. Excited about that. Just gotta like, contact them now with some draft legislation, which is cool. (0:05:23) Codey: I also had this thing called the Great Insect Fair, which is my university’s like, big extension outreach things. (0:05:32) Codey: about insects, so everyone that does insect science at my university has like, a little table and they talk about their research. (0:05:39) Codey: We had over 3,000 people show up, which was great. (0:05:44) Codey: My club made $1,800, which is also great because we use that to support students. (0:05:51) Codey: Yeah. (0:05:51) Jonny: That’s pretty amazing that’s a lot of people to bug you guys Ahhhhhh… laughs (0:05:59) Codey: We bugged them actually (0:06:02) Codey: Cuz we had people hold like we had at cockroaches and Tarantulas and scorpions and things that people could hold We had I brought my bearded dragon and someone else also brought rats and so you could feed them Little mealworms, which is really fun Yeah for games I’ve been playing I’m still playing Pokemon go and I actually (0:06:29) Codey: I’m going to Hawaii in a week and I just found out that there’s a specific Pokemon that’s only available in Hawaii. (0:06:37) Codey: So I’m pretty stoked about that. So I’m gonna get a bunch of Comfey and bring them back for people. Yeah. Have you not? (0:06:44) Jonny: Nice, I’m still shocked at how big Pokemon Go is. (0:06:47) Jonny: Like, I just… I don’t like Pokemon Go. I just… I didn’t play after the first week. It’s not for me. (0:06:56) Codey: Okay. They’ve definitely fixed a lot and like made it a lot more. (0:07:02) Codey: Enjoyable and easier for like new people to start, which is really nice and yeah I still I still play it every day. I play that every day. I play Pikmin Bloom every day. Something I don’t play every day but I wish I remembered it every day is my Tetris game. I now have 382,000 points. (0:07:27) Jonny: So you are getting ever closer to the million you need for this cruise. (0:07:31) Jonny: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. What do you mean either one million or two million? (0:07:32) Codey: Either one million or two million but yes. Depends on the cruise. (0:07:38) Codey: Some cruises are a million, some cruises are two million. It depends on which one you want. (0:07:39) Jonny: Okay. (0:07:43) Jonny: I am still very much in the category of this is a scam, Cody. (0:07:45) Codey: I’m excited. (0:07:48) Jonny: I feel like if you get on this cruise, you’re going to be like kidnapped, and then we’re going to turn this into a real crime podcast where we’re like trying to track you down. (0:07:57) Codey: Well currently all of the cruises that they have are sold out so. (0:08:02) Codey: There’s two million and five million and let’s see they had five cruises available. One was a seven-day Alaska cruise. Actually there were two seven-day Alaska cruises. There was a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise and then a five-day cruise. This doesn’t say where. Western Caribbean cruise goes to various ports starts in flow write-up. (0:08:32) Codey: Oh and then comes back to Florida. (0:08:34) Codey: Interesting. (0:08:36) Jonny: Okay, I like the point of getting on a cruise in Florida would be to not come back to Florida (0:08:41) Codey: right? I don’t want to come back. I just like, I think that one of the cruises went like some of the Alaskan cruises start you in Vancouver, British Columbia and it ends in Alaska so then you have to find a way back. So that’s like interesting to me why the other like that the other one you come back. Yeah these are the crews these are these are cruises that (0:09:11) Codey: are booked for the April April 2024 sailing there’s a couple of them there is another one that’s April 22nd April 29th so they have a couple different embarkings of these cruises but they’re all currently sold out but it doesn’t matter because I don’t have the money anyway or the points anyway there are 2 million or 5 million depending on which cruise but I did want to see one (0:09:41) Codey: for 1 million. The other game that I’m still playing daily is Usagi Shima which is the one that I played the adorable bunny collection game that I played with Al. I am only missing one bunny and I am about to Google it because I don’t know how to get this one bunny. Also some of the bunnies are like we like. (0:10:11) Codey: Our favorite toy is currently a question mark and I’m like that’s interesting. I have everything. I’ve purchased everything. (0:10:19) Codey: Like anytime I look at these The store there’s nothing that I don’t have so like How is the your favorite toy not not there? (0:10:31) Codey: I don’t know if she’s gonna the developer is gonna like release more. I don’t know but Very grumpy about that (0:10:40) Jonny: Maybe you just haven’t done the secret bunny handshake password to unlock the secret item (0:10:46) Codey: I must not have. I do still have some bunnies that I need to like become their best friend. (0:10:53) Codey: So like think of like Stardew Valley where you have hearts for everyone. (0:10:58) Codey: There are some bunnies that I still need to do hearts for. (0:11:01) Codey: Uh yeah and that’s what we’ve been up to. (0:11:07) Codey: Whoo! Okay so we’ve got some news. First up is Wild Mender. (0:11:16) Codey: And it is out now on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. So this is the game where it’s a desert gardening survival game where you find like a spring in the garden or in the desert and you’re using that spring and bringing things back to that spring to like rejuvenate the world. (0:11:35) Codey: And it says also you’re cleansing the corruption that turned the world into the near dead wasteland before you. They literally say, “Or just make a pretty garden.” (0:11:46) Codey: That works too. Interesting. So, yeah, this is currently $25 on Steam. (0:11:55) Codey: I just realized I didn’t. Oh, Windows. Windows only. No Mac. (0:12:02) Codey: And they also said that if you share your garden screenshot in their Discord, (0:12:08) Codey: you enter a competition to win a plushie. They have two plushies. (0:12:13) Codey: the third. (0:12:13) Jonny: And this frog plushie looks so derpy it’s kinda great. (0:12:16) Codey: It is really… it kind of is giving me from Futurama that frog from… (0:12:24) Codey: It’s not a frog, it’s a toad. (0:12:24) Jonny: Yes, yes it absolutely is (0:12:30) Codey: Hypnotoad. (0:12:31) Codey: It’s giving me Hypnotoad vibes. (0:12:32) Jonny: Yep. 100% (0:12:33) Codey: Yeah, what are you… what are your thoughts on Wild Mender? (0:12:37) Codey: Are you a Wild Mender? (0:12:38) Codey: Is this up your alley or… (0:12:39) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:12:39) Jonny: No, it doesn’t look like that sort of game for me, because I’m not a big survival game person. (0:12:46) Jonny: I like something a little bit more directed, I think. (0:12:50) Jonny: But I like the idea of what this is trying to do. (0:12:53) Jonny: So I feel like if I was feeling like playing a survival game, I would be keen to try this one, because of the sort of more gardening style aspect rejuvenating the land. (0:13:04) Jonny: I think that’s really compelling to me, and something that I’ve kind of wanted. (0:13:07) Jonny: I think in one of the first episodes. (0:13:09) Jonny: was on, Al and I kind of talked about like the idea of you know being able to change the landscape in a farming game which this is obviously sort of getting into but probably more in that survival game sort of way rather than I’m kind of more hoping for it on a smaller scale right where it’s maybe a little bit more directed and bigger impacts than I think you would see in this sort of game but it looks cool. I think if you, you know, like a survival game and like a farming game this looks like a really fun fun little crossover to try. (0:13:44) Codey: Yeah, they do say that they Allows you to customize your experience from adjusting the difficulty all the way down to toggling sandstorms on and off There’s a lot of options to ensure that you can make the world work for you So maybe like you can get rid of a lot of the survival aspects And kind of be in like creativity mode a la minecraft, so (0:14:09) Jonny: Yeah, seems cool. (0:14:12) Codey: Next up is spell (0:14:14) Codey: and secrets this now has a release date this is the gosh what did he say Harry Potter without the turf so this is Harry yeah yeah if you really liked the world of Harry Potter and you want to go to a magical school and defend your magical school but (0:14:27) Jonny: Yep, that was… (0:14:29) Jonny: I watched the trailer and I was like “Wow, this looks like Harry Potter, but there’s no problematic people…” (0:14:35) Jonny: Well, there’s no problematic people that we know of involved. (0:14:44) Codey: you also believe that trans women are women because they are this is the game for you so yeah you it’s the release date is November 9th it’s coming out on switch PlayStation 5 Xbox series s and X and Steam and PC and the new trailer that they have did you watch the trailer Johnny there’s curling (0:15:10) Jonny: I did. I did. (0:15:12) Jonny: Oh, I might have missed the curling in there, but that… (0:15:15) Codey: at one point they’re not doing it in they’re doing it like on grass it’s like a turf but it’s it’s 100% curling it’s at about 38 seconds in (0:15:16) Jonny: Bye. (0:15:26) Jonny: Sorry, just… (0:15:28) Jonny: I was not expecting both uses of the word “terf” to come up in this conversation, but here we are. (0:15:34) Jonny: Yup. (0:15:38) Codey: oh my gosh you’re not wrong yeah (0:15:44) Codey: so they show you playing wizard jet let’s probably just chess but they show you playing chess and then right after the chess part they show curling but it’s magical curling it’s really interesting (0:15:58) Jonny: I think the thing that really… I can’t remember the name of the game but it was kind of like Magica or something and it was just kind of a game where you ran around as wizards and you kind of combined spells and like they had lots of weird elemental effects. This game kind of gives me similar vibes to that where it’s kind of like that 45 degree overhead sort of like action-adventure sort of vibe and just really playing off like “hey people just really like Harry Potter and this is kind of just like… (0:16:10) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:16:28) Jonny: um uh you know trying to do that and make it fun um and again I think it’s doing a thing that I kind of really like at the moment which is um games kind of being clear about what they are and being simpler like so many particularly AAA games at the moment are just so big and bloated and over complicated um and they’re trying to be all things to all people and this looks like a game It’s like hey, we’re a spells action adventure game Like you make your own character, that looks cool, you’re out of school Like there’s a lot of familiarity around it around just making what looks like a fun action adventure game. So this looks fun (0:17:10) Codey: yeah it looks really cute um it gives me it reminds me like the top-down style like you said like the 45 degree angle kind of reminds me of like the gauntlet series I don’t know if you ever played gauntlet but I loved that series and the fact that like when you open a door it like reveals the room behind it but until then it’s just kind of like empty space I don’t know it just it’s it’s It’s giving gauntlet, it’s giving… (0:17:40) Codey: It just seems like it’d be really fun. (0:17:43) Codey: And the fact that you can play with two people simultaneously, (0:17:45) Codey: so you and a friend can be exploring this world together, (0:17:49) Codey: is really cool. (0:17:50) Codey: So, yeah, Spells and Secrets releasing on the 9th of November on all of the platforms at the same time. (0:17:59) Codey: And they will have a physical release for a couple of them, (0:18:02) Codey: but it’s, I think, at a different time. (0:18:04) Codey: Spirit of the Island is getting a console release, (0:18:10) Codey: and this game is already out now on Steam for $18. (0:18:17) Codey: And at the time of recording, it’s 55% off, so it’s only $8. (0:18:22) Codey: But I don’t know if this is going to be there. (0:18:26) Codey: It says it’s got, like, a, I think, 44-minute– (0:18:31) Codey: 44-hour countdown, so I don’t know if it’s still there or not. (0:18:34) Codey: But I did see on their Twitter that they had another. (0:18:40) Codey: sale recently. They’re part of an indie sale. So I think that they’re on a lot of sales. So definitely keep your eye out for that if you want the Steam version. But the physical versions. So they have PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and S, and the Nintendo Switch. All getting physical releases. And oops sorry the retail version is only. PlayStation 5 and Switch. But they’re all coming out on… what’s the date? Where is it? Thank you. The 19th of October. (0:19:16) Jonny: 19th of October. (0:19:18) Jonny: I think this is kind of one of those games that’s in the category of “I would quite like to try when it comes to consoles, and now it’s coming to consoles.” (0:19:28) Jonny: It’s coming at a really busy time, so I feel like it might be one of those ones that, unfortunately, goes on the backburner until I get a bit of space. (0:19:30) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:19:37) Jonny: But really excited for it. (0:19:49) Codey: just the fact that they have a Paradise Edition, I guess, so on the physical releases for the PS5 and the Switch, they have this thing called a Paradise Edition where you get like stickers and a cute little tourist guide, but there are no prices available. Oh, $25, just kidding, (0:20:05) Codey: $25 is what they will be. I don’t know how much more of the Paradise Edition is, but (0:20:12) Codey: all of the console games will be $25 no matter where you are, euros or dollars. (0:20:19) Codey: It’s probably more for you, isn’t it, Donnie? (0:20:21) Codey: Yeah. (0:20:21) Jonny: Uhhh, I’m guessing it will be more for us. (0:20:24) Jonny: It will be probably more like $35 where I am. (0:20:25) Codey: Dang! (0:20:28) Jonny: But our dollars are… (0:20:35) Codey: Unfortunate, okay, and then yeah, Concerned Date just trying to dominate the, oh and I think Al said this, just trying to own the news cycle, right? (0:20:46) Codey: He’s just trying to make sure that every time we have podcasts, we have something to talk about and we bring them up again. (0:20:53) Codey: So for Haunted Chocolatier, he posted, Concerned Date posted four new screenshots as a thank you for the fact that he now has a million followers on Twitter, which is bananas. (0:21:05) Codey: Um, what do you think of these screenshots, Johnny? (0:21:08) Jonny: Yep, these look like screenshots from a game they’re concerned I’ve made. (0:21:12) Jonny: Like… (0:21:16) Jonny: I don’t want to downplay it, but I’m a little bit like… (0:21:19) Jonny: Until there’s real news, like screenshots are just screenshots, right? (0:21:23) Jonny: Like, yep, that’s… I don’t know. (0:21:25) Jonny: I didn’t… probably look particularly deep at them, because I was just like, (0:21:29) Jonny: “Yes, these look like, you know, ones of forest, ones…” (0:21:32) Jonny: I can’t even remember them, I’m reopening it, but yeah, like there’s the, you know, the library, (0:21:39) Jonny: I think we’ve seen before, a house, a fountain, and yes, these are like… (0:21:43) Jonny: These could be locations in Stardew Valley, except for the fact that we know that they’re not locations in Stardew Valley. (0:21:48) Codey: Mm-hmm. We know that they’re in a different game. (0:21:50) Jonny: That’s… yeah. (0:21:53) Jonny: Um, and I’m not trying to be down on it, it’s just more, “I don’t really want to be…” (0:21:58) Jonny: Like, I want to get excited for Haunted Chocolate here when it is close to coming out, (0:22:02) Jonny: not when it’s just a thing that we don’t know any more. (0:22:06) Codey: Yeah, I’m usually the same, but I do love the conspiracy theory, like people on Twitter who are nitpicking every little thing that they see in these screenshots. (0:22:20) Codey: I do love that people, when people get really hyped like that. (0:22:23) Codey: So for example, in the house, it looks like it’s a shop because there’s a shop portion of his house and then there’s like a little kitchen and then the bedroom. (0:22:32) Codey: No bathroom. (0:22:33) Codey: Just realized I don’t think he’s ever made is there our bathrooms (0:22:36) Codey: Are there bathrooms in any concerned ape things? (0:22:38) Codey: Just people just don’t have to go to the bathroom? (0:22:40) Codey: People in concerned apes world do not have bodily functions confirmed Um… (0:22:41) Jonny: I don’t recall dipping. (0:22:49) Jonny: So now you’ve opened this door, it’s not going to close that quickly. (0:22:54) Jonny: I was reading a book, like I really got into lit RPG style books, you know fantasy style RPG books, but it’s kind of often heavily inspired by video games. (0:23:05) Jonny: And one of the books I was reading recently, I can’t even remember which one, but I addressed it by basically being in this world, I didn’t want to address bathroom stuff, which you never address in books anyway, but they explicitly referenced the fact that magic just makes the poo disappear. (0:23:15) Codey: Mm-hmm Okay There’s just you take a magic pill or something and then that sits at the bottom it sits at the bottom of your gastrointestinal system and Any time anything gets within a certain distance of it. It’s like magicked away. Where does it go? (0:23:20) Jonny: No, just the magic. (0:23:22) Jonny: Yup. (0:23:23) Jonny: Yup. (0:23:24) Jonny: Well, see, that’s the- Well, that’s the fun thing, right? (0:23:41) Codey: Can you like make it go somewhere? Can you make it go to your enemy’s house? (0:23:47) Jonny: it’s never explained where it goes but but presumably (0:23:49) Jonny: it does go somewhere so maybe there is somewhere that is just you know the entire collection of humanity’s poo (0:23:55) Codey: Pooh Island. Maybe. Interesting. Well, in this screenshot of the shop, there’s like a little creature in the back that kind of looks like a thylacine to me, but it’s like obviously a, (0:24:10) Codey: you probably know all about thylacines because you’re down there. You don’t know what a thylacine is. So a thylacine is a, well it was a (0:24:11) Jonny: What’s a thylacine? What’s that in human words? (0:24:18) Jonny: I only know human words. (0:24:25) Codey: marsupial that looked kind of like a dog that existed in Australia, but the last one was killed in like the 1920s. So we have like some, but you’re down there. I know, I know. I got the Kiwis. (0:24:36) Jonny: Cody, Cody, I’m in New Zealand. We do not have the marsupials. That sounds like some Australian nonsense that’s like… (0:24:42) Jonny: Yeah, we’re in New Zealand we have birds. We love birds. That’s that’s our thing. We like dinosaurs. We’re way cool. (0:24:53) Codey: But someone on the Twitter said– (0:24:55) Codey: so saw this like Thylacine-looking little adorable thing and they said– (0:24:59) Codey: This is– I’m gonna credit them. Who is it? Mads. Start up with Mads. (0:25:05) Codey: Said, “Is that one of the animals you put the skeleton together for on Ginger Island?” (0:25:10) Codey: So possibly I’ve– so I’ve not ever done Ginger Island, so I don’t know. (0:25:10) Jonny: How interesting I don’t think so it doesn’t (0:25:19) Codey: But there’s this little creature, so that’s a deep cut that someone had. (0:25:25) Codey: Second screenshot of them in the forest. He’s using a bow and arrow. (0:25:34) Jonny: I mean, sure, but like, isn’t it just kind of like the slingshot? (0:25:38) Jonny: I mean, yes, but functionally. (0:25:38) Codey: No, it’s got a bow and arrow. It’s very clearly a bow and arrow. (0:25:42) Codey: No, it’s different. It’s different. (0:25:47) Codey: You’re at like a fountain, and it’s really the mermaid fountain. It’s really pretty. (0:25:54) Codey: And then, yeah, I guess there’s not much to say about the library other than the fact that (0:25:58) Jonny: actually so the thing that gets me excited and it’s from the forest screenshot is the inventory view um so it has like uh what I presume is a tool slot uh where it looks like there’s a stick or something in there and then there’s like a bow that’s selected and there’s a present and something else so it looks like a different version of the inventory system to stardew valley which for me is really exciting because that’s the thing I don’t like about stardew valley (0:26:04) Codey: uh-huh (0:26:19) Codey: Yeah. (0:26:20) Codey: And you also have a health bar. (0:26:26) Codey: With hit points in it. (0:26:27) Jonny: Yes. (0:26:28) Jonny: Yes, with hit points and… (0:26:31) Codey: Yeah. (0:26:32) Codey: And then is that a bowling ball or a coconut? (0:26:36) Jonny: I’m not sure what that is, because it’s definitely not a bowling ball, because there’s too many holes. (0:26:42) Jonny: I also think it’s… (0:26:42) Codey: They might bowl differently, you never know. (0:26:44) Jonny: I also don’t think it’s a coco… I don’t know what it is, but yeah, it looks… (0:26:49) Jonny: The two options feel like bowling ball and coconut, and I feel like it’s neither of those. (0:26:54) Jonny: Maybe it’s a chocolate? That would make sense. (0:26:57) Jonny: I’m gonna say it’s a chocolate. (0:26:59) Codey: Okay it’s a chocolate bowling ball. Okay so yeah those are the screenshots and our ramblings about them and the twitter comments about them. (0:27:12) Codey: Confirmation of archery which we got a hint at with started 1.6 last week when we talked about it but by we I mean Kevin L. But concerned ape was not done he wanted us to talk about him (0:27:29) Codey: so uh when was this yesterday he posted hats on cats and dogs so these are it’s just and it’s just cats and dogs from persoupsardou question mark haunted talk the tier question mark no no idea but they have hats on (0:27:55) Jonny: I feel like these are from Stardew, the only one I’m not sure about is the bottom left image, (0:28:02) Jonny: I’m not quite sure where that one is. But anyway, hats look cute on catsanddoll. (0:28:05) Codey: But yeah, they do. And there’s a big old bow on one of the dogs. So we’ve got like a cowboy hat. (0:28:13) Codey: We’ve got like, I don’t know what to call the hat on the top right. What would you call that hat? (0:28:21) Codey: It’s got a feather in it. (0:28:24) Jonny: uh I am not a hat expert so I don’t know what to call any of these hats like it’s uh it kind of reminds me of like the zoro style zoro yeah (0:28:33) Codey: Okay, the bottom. (0:28:35) Codey: Ooh, yeah, yeah, Zorro style hat. (0:28:42) Codey: I’m sure that Gaucho hat is what people have called it online, or Zorro hat. (0:28:51) Codey: Zorro hat or Gaucho hat. (0:28:54) Codey: Al probably loves that we’re diving this deep into these little pictures. (0:28:58) Codey: Probably not going to edit this out at all. (0:29:01) Codey: Um, the bottom left hat looks like if (0:29:05) Codey: a grandma was like, “I need to go to the market today.” (0:29:10) Codey: This is the type of hat that she’d put on, you know? (0:29:13) Jonny: Yeah, this looks like the one of the first hats that the kittens sell you. (0:29:18) Jonny: So the kittens sell you the hats? (0:29:20) Jonny: Mouse? (0:29:20) Jonny: Is a mice who sells you the hats? (0:29:22) Codey: think it’s mice. And then the bow is like the gigantic obnoxiously large bow. I would think like this bow is like Lady and the Tramp style bow. Like one of the one of the big bows that Lady had that’s like way too big for her little tiny body. So yeah, hats on cats and dogs and some screenshots. (0:29:22) Jonny: God. (0:29:23) Jonny: Yeah. (0:29:48) Jonny: And none of this is actually news, because it’s just pictures. (0:29:50) Codey: Just picture. (0:29:52) Codey: And speculation. Woo! (0:29:57) Codey: Since we love pictures and speculation, but possibly, whatchamacallit, video and speculation. (0:30:06) Codey: Oh my gosh. (0:30:08) Codey: Lego Animal Crossing. (0:30:14) Jonny: Yeah, so the video just shows like minifigs and it had like, you know, your classic characters from Animal Crossing. So you’ve got like Isabel and Tom Nook and a few others, which is cool. But I think the real speculation is are they going to be real Animal Crossing LEGO sets coming? And I feel like that seems very likely, given how much LEGO (0:30:44) Jonny: loves doing IP crossover stuff now. I would be very surprised if it wasn’t. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought it made sense because you could do everything from, you know, (0:30:58) Jonny: Nook Store to the museum. You know, you could go back to some of the old games and do like the coffee shop. You could do like the play a house, all sorts of things. Like it just feels like a really really natural collaboration. (0:31:14) Jonny: and a collaboration that is going to make many of us agree. (0:31:20) Codey: I mean that’s my thing is like is this hinting at figurines and like sets that you can purchase or is this hinting at like a video game because they have like I mean but like could they I mean is that it does say minifigure what okay when the balloon goes up over again this is an 11 second video y’all we’re really okay it says lego the lego logo and the (0:31:29) Jonny: Oh, I… did not give video game 5% (0:31:50) Codey: minifigure the minifigure I don’t know what that means our trademarks of the lego group I don’t (0:31:58) Jonny: Presumably it’s the trademark that they use for like because they I think they’ve done some blind box sort of stuff With with the minifigs like the the Lego the Lego people That would be my working assumption (0:32:14) Codey: I mean you could also, I mean you could have Tom Nook from every generation in this too because he looks like he’s wearing New Horizons, his New Horizons outfit, but he could wear, (0:32:27) Codey: you could get him wearing his wild world outfit, you know, like there’s, I feel like they’re gonna make a lot of money off of this. (0:32:35) Codey: This is from Nintendo of America by the way, I don’t think we said who tweeted this. (0:32:42) Codey: And yeah, people are just talking about. (0:32:44) Codey: How they’re ready to lose money and ready to be broke in the comments. (0:32:48) Jonny: Yeah, like I’ve been on the border of becoming a LEGO person for a long time and the thing that’s kind of held me at bay is I’m not big into most of the IPs that they’ve done collabs with, (0:32:49) Codey: So. (0:32:59) Codey: Oh yeah. (0:33:01) Codey: Yep, I don’t have money so… (0:33:08) Codey: That’s what stopped me. (0:33:11) Codey: And when I do have money it goes to my dogs. So yeah. (0:33:15) Codey: That’s the news. (0:33:18) Codey: So Johnny we’re here to talk about Faith Farm. So what… (0:33:20) Jonny: Whoo (0:33:29) Codey: Faith Farm, what is it? How are you? What are your thoughts? (0:33:34) Jonny: So at its core, Fey Farm is another iteration take on the Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, (0:33:45) Jonny: Story of Seasons, whichever one you want to sort of pick as the base. But it’s another iteration of that formula. So it’s farming… it’s probably more in the crafting end of the spectrum, (0:33:58) Jonny: so it’s a lot more crafting driven than it is farming driven. Farming is more of a thing (0:34:04) Jonny: in the game, rather than sort of being a central point. But it’s, you know, you… I think the starting is you have sailed to the island where the stuff is happening. Anyway, you’re a new resident and they’re like “hey there’s an old abandoned farm, would you like it?” You say yes, (0:34:24) Jonny: you start clearing up the farm and, you know, doing the quests and all of those sorts of things. So (0:34:30) Jonny: At its base, like the core gameplay loop, it is one of one of the most popular games (0:34:35) Codey: Yeah, looking at the launch trailer, it looks very Animal Crossing-esque, but with farming and magic. (0:34:43) Jonny: uh it’s so it looks that way and uh maybe maybe we’ll get into the so so I have a very conflicted take on this game right so if I was going to summarize my overall thoughts is that um this game plays really well but overall I do not enjoy this game because it’s missing some really really core elements and it’s helped me understand the things that I like in these sorts of games, but it is missing some really cool elements which (0:34:57) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:34:59) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:35:13) Jonny: are primarily around things like the story and the characters, which was very surprising to me because in a game like Fei Farm, and I guess probably to which probably just very quickly talk about why it’s called Fei Farm is that there are theories in the world, there is magic which we’ll talk about in a little bit, there is a theory realm which I have only really just got access to and it’s quite sparse but it kind of just seems like another area (0:35:44) Jonny: theories in it. So my expectation was that the story and interacting with the characters was going to be kind of a big part of the game. And weirdly it’s like yes there are quests and the quests drive a lot of what you do, but the characters are so non-factors in this game it is shocking. Like on day one you kind of learn that none of these people (0:36:13) Jonny: think interesting to say, like there is no interesting dialogue, they are not particularly distinctive like some of them have distinctive looks you’re like oh maybe this is the cool one there’s very few of the characters that are romanceable and the romanceable ones feel like they’re entirely separate from the characters that you interact with for most of the quest stuff. It’s just really odd how bland and boring the characters in this game are and how quickly they’re just like not a thing. (0:36:44) Codey: Mm-hmm, which is not normally when you’re playing these types of games. (0:36:52) Codey: People that play these types of games are really into the story of the people around you and why they’re there. (0:36:58) Codey: So not having that is a big black hole, I guess. (0:37:03) Jonny: Yeah, and I think for me, like the one of the really easiest comparisons that I’ll draw is, (0:37:09) Jonny: you know, they have all of their characters that represent the various things, so they have like the fishing guy. I couldn’t tell you the fishing guy’s name, just that he’s the he’s the guy that you talk to for the fishing stuff, and you compare it to a character like Willy in Stardew Valley, (0:37:23) Jonny: right? And Willy is just like a really great character in that he’s the fishing guy, but he’s, (0:37:30) Jonny: you know, a very passionate fisherman in a place where fishing (0:37:33) Jonny: maybe hasn’t been valued as much and he’s trying to look at it to get restarted and it comes through in his notice board quests, you know, like the way they’re framed and just the way his character speaks and his lines of dialogue where there’s a real character there that’s interesting and compelling beyond just being the fishing tutor, and that’s not the case in Fei Farm. (0:37:56) Codey: Mm-hmm Yeah, and it’s interesting cuz like on their website it says that They like it’s one of their big things is to grow lasting bonds They say our elaborate cast of neighbors will help you find your purpose Lean on them in times of need as you become a good citizen of Azoria. They might fall in love with you, too And it has like learn from the locals meet color for kick off colorful characters I don’t know why that was difficult find your soul mate bring friends home (0:38:26) Codey: so like this is Like it’s just so this is like maybe something that they’re hoping to develop or do you feel like it is what it is (0:38:39) Jonny: I kind of feel like it is what it is, like it’s… sometimes you look at something you go “oh there’s the basics of it there” but you know they could build on it. I don’t even feel like the basics are really there, like they all just have really generic… like on day one you have multiple characters kind of saying the same lines of dialogue to you. It’s not deep, the pool of romanciful characters is not particularly deep or interesting and you know… (0:39:09) Jonny: it’s an extreme version of the classic, like the few characters that you do like think “oh this one you know this one might be interesting” they’re just all not available for reasons that I don’t really understand. I did try to play with the system a little bit where it’s kind of like you just do fetch quests for you know the… and there’s friendship for the non-romanciful characters. (0:39:34) Jonny: But you just do fringe quests, or fetch quests to kind of build that. (0:39:39) Jonny: And then I did a date, you know effectively the cutscene once you get to a certain number of hearts with one of the characters, and it was very much one of those like “wow we could just put in any of the characters” like it was nothing specific to the character that I had picked, (0:39:51) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:39:53) Jonny: it was just like “we went on a picnic” and “hey I like you, you like me, great this was fun, let’s do it” like there was nothing special or unique to the character. I got no sense that I you know made a choice that was interesting. (0:40:09) Jonny: Or had any consequence, or was different to any of other choices. (0:40:13) Jonny: It was like, what? Which face looks the best? Which is, you know? (0:40:16) Codey: Yeah, not great. (0:40:17) Jonny: Like, it’s a video game. I’m not- (0:40:18) Codey: I mean that was me with Stardew. (0:40:20) Jonny: That’s not why I’m here. (0:40:24) Codey: That was a bad noodle. (0:40:25) Codey: And the first time I played Stardew, I was like, “Ooh, an emo boy!” (0:40:28) Codey: “I want the emo boy!” (0:40:31) Codey: But then, when you marry him, he’s–spoiler alert–he’s trash! (0:40:35) Codey: And I was like, “Oh, it’s not all about looks.” (0:40:39) Codey: Yeah. (0:40:39) Jonny: But that’s where you start and it changes from there right because you learn more about what the actual character is This is just like no which which? (0:40:47) Jonny: Which pixel combination do you think looks the best go with that one I guess So yeah, so that side of the game is very disappointing and kind of just because it’s sort of in the same realm Um, so there’s the there is the sort of story (0:40:51) Codey: Yeah, there’s not yeah, hmm (0:41:04) Jonny: Question and the quest system generally is is fine. You know, it’s kind of pushing you to do (0:41:09) Jonny: The next thing and in a you know similar way to most of these games do where it’s like Craft this thing or get to the bottom of the mine or you know Do do whatever this thing is and it kind of keeps you pushing along and that side of it’s quite compelling But the the biggest problem is so magic is part of the game and there’s a range of spells I think I unlocked two or three and the spells sort of help you clear stuff from the world so you can access more areas or (0:41:39) Jonny: Have so they have that use and I have a use on the combat side of things as well But when you unlock it, it’s kind of meant to be this big story moment So you do, you know a large fetch quest and you bring the the person that’s gonna teach you the spell a bunch of stuff You’re like, oh, this is gonna be really exciting and they say, you know Come and talk to me the next day and we’ll we’ll do the thing that we’re gonna do that will also Result you in learning the spell once you get really excited and then you go to bed and then (0:42:06) Jonny: Like a one-screen thing pops up that says “you and the character” (0:42:09) Jonny: went off and did the thing and then you just wake up in front of your house and now you know the spell. And the first spell I learned it took me a few days before I even recognized that I actually had the spell because I thought the game had glitched and I hadn’t the event hadn’t happened I didn’t realize that that one-screen thing was like the entirety of the thing so it’s really disappointing that you’re sort of building up to this big moment and in And the big moment is like a page in a book. (0:42:11) Codey: Mmm… (0:42:39) Jonny: Which is not a video game thing, like I didn’t get to… (0:42:42) Codey: Yeah, you didn’t get to like see you guys going off or anything like there’s no cut scene. It’s just you did it (0:42:43) Jonny: * (0:42:56) Jonny: Because you wake up on your farm, you don’t notice any change. (0:43:01) Jonny: Like there’s no immediate visual change that anything actually has happened, which is just (0:43:08) Codey: So the spells, is it like something that you can just do at any time or is it something that you have to have, like a store of magic and you can only do them when your store is full? (0:43:22) Codey: Mm-hmm. Okay. (0:43:22) Jonny: So it’s a mana system, and the mana effectively just works like stamina, so you can cast a certain number of spells a day effectively just in the same way that you can cut a certain number of trees or mine a certain number of rocks. (0:43:35) Jonny: So it kind of works fine, and the spells have interesting uses in combat in that they’re not just damage, so I think the second spell you get is a wind spell, which in the world it kind of clears some really heavy fog, (0:43:50) Jonny: but you can use it to knock enemies back. (0:43:52) Jonny: Which is a cool use of that spell, so it’s kind of that dual purpose. (0:43:53) Codey: Hmm Yeah Okay, so is it only you spells like you do you actually have like an axe and like a tool kit that allows you to Collect things from your environment or is it all pretty much through spells? (0:44:11) Jonny: No, so I’m actually surprised. So the spells kind of feel more like an add-on rather than the main part, so you still have all of the usual tools. And this is what’s really odd about this game, (0:44:23) Jonny: because this is the area where this game does things really, really right. So the way the tools work is for all of your base tools, so like your axe, your pickaxe, your watering can, (0:44:38) Jonny: those sorts of things. They’re… they… (0:44:41) Jonny: they auto… like, it will auto-select the tool based on the context that you’re at. (0:44:46) Jonny: So if your cursor is over the tree, then it will just automatically select the axe. (0:44:49) Codey: - Yeah. (0:44:51) Jonny: You don’t need to change to the axe. Same for the watering can, or like if you’re… (0:44:57) Jonny: if you’re over your crops, or if you’re in the mines, it’s just automatically the pickaxe, or if you’re on a diggable spot, it will be the spade. So you don’t have… (0:45:06) Jonny: you’re not constantly switching stuff, which is so nice, because you can kind of just run around and clean up your… (0:45:11) Jonny: farm really really quickly and you know there’s only a very small number of times I was like oh I thought I was pointing at this one thing and I was turns out I was pointing at something else so it used a tool that I wasn’t intending but those instances were so infrequent the convenience factor of that was really really nice the only tools that sort of aren’t on that wheel are your more like specialist tools so your wand is one your fishing rod is another and then there’s a bug catching it and that’s the… (0:45:41) Jonny: so you can you have to rotate between those ones which is generally fine because you’re often like okay I’ve done like I’m not doing work so I’m gonna move off the work tools and I’ll you know I’m gonna go catch bugs so I’ll select the bug catching tool the bugs are the bugs are great so the bug catching and fishing are kind of in the category of like really nice things to do where you’re sort of running around the world the fishings a little bit like So the fishing is a little bit (0:45:56) Codey: How are the bugs in this game? (0:46:11) Jonny: Animal Crossing style with the, you know, you need to cast in front of the fish and And there’s a bit of a reeling in minigame, which is fine. It’s not as difficult as the Stardew Valley one. So that’s okay the bugs you can Sneak up on and you have a chance to catch so the difficult ones you might need to have a few goes at at catching But they’re they’re really cool (0:46:36) Jonny: There’s bees in the game and they utilize the bees in a really cool way like you this you occasionally come (0:46:41) Jonny: Across a queen bee which you need to craft like your hives and things like that and then there’s also worker bees which you need to um uh craft Uh some some some like other like, you know Smaller sort of bee things. So I really love the way they use Use bees and it’s just kind of a nice little collectible thing that as you’re running around the world You’re like, oh, yeah, kind of just gonna catch some bugs or whatever. So it’s a nice little thing to to do (0:47:09) Codey: Do they look like regular bugs or do they look– (0:47:13) Jonny: In general, they kind of just look like regular. (0:47:23) Codey: Okay, so you’ve talked about the craft, not the crafting, you’ve talked about like the farming. Well, I guess you talked about just the tools themselves, (0:47:35) Codey: but like how do you, how does farming work in the game? (0:47:39) Jonny: Farming is kind of just like farming in other games, you know, you hoe the land, you plant the seed, you water the seed, and you know, you can use fertilizers to make it grow faster, you’ve got the crops that are just, you know, they’ll grow in three or four days and you harvest them once, and you’ve got the crops that will continue to be harvested over time, so there’s nothing particularly special or interesting happening from that respect, but It kind of works well. One really nice addition. (0:48:09) Jonny: And we’ll talk more about the world traversal in a bit. But you can go in the water, (0:48:14) Jonny: and when you’re in the water, or if it’s raining, your watering can just automatically fills up, (0:48:18) Jonny: which is just a really nice little quality of life thing. Because if you have forgotten to fill it up at the well after you’ve watered your stuff for the day, then it’s highly likely that you’ll just naturally fill it up over the course of the day with everything else that you’re doing. So that’s really nice. There’s animal farming as well. That kind of adds the little… (0:48:39) Jonny: …nuance of you need to interact with things every day, but they kind of like you based on have they been fed, have you packed them, and have they got sunlight? Which I really like the sort of have they got sunlight dimension. I think that’s pretty good. So that seems really cool. (0:48:57) Jonny: Only other thing I guess is just in terms of the types of crops, is that there’s flowers, (0:49:03) Jonny: which is cool. And you can do some flower crossbreeding, which seems kind of like a cool system and quite deep. (0:49:09) Jonny: So that seems like something that I kind of want to dig into more, which I’ve only really just started playing the surface of, because I don’t know that there’s seeds for every sort of flower. (0:49:19) Jonny: Maybe a little bit more like Animal Crossing, where there’s like the base colors for certain flowers and then you can crossbreed them. Yeah, yeah, so there’s that sort of thing. I get the sense that it’s sort of building towards there being more magical style of crops. I just haven’t got any yet, but I’m guessing they are in there. (0:49:22) Codey: Yeah, and then you put them next to each other. (0:49:39) Jonny: So, that’s pretty cool, and the best thing, so this is the best thing about farming, and this is the thing that this game does really, really well, because it’s all of the quality of life things, is you can move your planted crops. (0:49:52) Jonny: So if you’re like, I’ve put this in the wrong spot, or I want to adjust this to build something, you can move it, which is amazing. It’s so good. (0:49:55) Codey: Oh. (0:49:56) Codey: Yeah. (0:50:01) Codey: Well, and that’s something you could do in real life too. (0:50:05) Codey: You just get down to the roots and move your thing. (0:50:09) Codey: It’s not impossible. (0:50:09) Jonny: Yeah, yeah, it’s not it’s not impossible And it’s just so convenient because particularly with flower breeding when you’re like, oh I planted the wrong flower in the spot I didn’t want to crossbreed those two And you can just literally pick it up and swap it out for the one that you want. It’s really really convenient It’s such a nice little (0:50:29) Codey: So what do you do when you get the crops? What do you do with them like is it just kind of a you sell them or is there some type of like crafting or cooking. (0:50:40) Jonny: Yeah so this is probably a good segue into the crafting system because the crafting system is relatively deep in that so once you harvest them you can sell them if you want and that’s generally the worst thing that you can do. What you want to do with your crops is cook them. (0:50:59) Jonny: So you can at the start you just get a basic campfire and you can cook them on that but as you sort of progress you unlock more sorts of crafting stations and so you could take Um… (0:51:10) Jonny: Uh… something that you’ve… you’ve grown and you could… um… chop it up on… on one station and you know… (0:51:17) Jonny: Turn it into a maybe a cut version of the vegetables or… (0:51:20) Jonny: Mixed vegetables or something like that and then you could cook it on… you know a more elaborate… um… cooking station that can make… (0:51:26) Jonny: Um… better quality food and the better quality food not only does it sell for more But it you know does the energy restore or health restore or those sorts of things that you need for… (0:51:36) Jonny: um the mine and the crafting is kind of like it’s one of those (0:51:40) Jonny: versions where you know you jump into that you jump onto the table and you say craft 12 of this thing and it will craft them over time and you don’t have to stand there while it’s crafted but there’s a time element to to the way things are crafted but the game really rewards you for crafting with things so it’s not the sort of game where you want to sell stuff particular base versions and so again this game like quality of life features every other farming game copy fave farm’s quality of life features. (0:52:10) Jonny: at the start of the game on your farm there is a shed that shed has infinite storage you can hoard everything in this game it is amazing. (0:52:18) Codey: Oh my gosh. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. (0:52:20) Jonny: right it’s so good it’s so so good like I really want to uh like if you’re playing this game or you want to play this game hoard everything like sell stuff like there is there is certain stuff to sell like sell your things that you’ve crafted sell things that um you know you (0:52:40) Jonny: like you’ve you’ve kind of feel like you’ve done everything with and I feel like I feel like I should be able to do something with this hoard it hoard it because you can it doesn’t punish you it’s amazing (0:52:47) Codey: Yeah. (0:52:48) Codey: Well, that’s the problem with some farming games is you start the game and right off the bat, (0:52:56) Codey: you’re like, oh wow, this cool rock, that’s cool, (0:52:58) Codey: but I found it on my first day. (0:53:00) Codey: So it’s probably gonna be here all the time and I’m running out of inventory space, (0:53:04) Codey: so I’m just gonna sell it. (0:53:05) Codey: And then you find out that that was the rarest rock ever and you only get one every month or something like that. (0:53:13) Codey: And it’s just like, well, I sold it. (0:53:15) Codey: So, because– (0:53:15) Jonny: Yep. Yup. (0:53:17) Codey: Because I didn’t know what to do with it on day one, so that’s really cool that they have like stuff that you– like a way for you to just save everything right off the bat. (0:53:27) Codey: Because like– and you don’t have to– it’s just there, right? You don’t have to build it. (0:53:27) Jonny: Yeah Correct. Yep, so you don’t have to build it. It’s there from the start, which is great And you and your your characters inventory is also relatively Generous sets of things do tend to like have more sort of like stacks in your inventory where you can only carry certain amount in a slot and you have to unlock some slots, but your tools don’t take up inventory slots and Reli- (0:53:47) Codey: Mm-hmm. (0:53:49) Codey: Oh my gosh. (0:53:53) Jonny: Right? (0:53:55) Jonny: relatively quickly you can unlock. (0:53:57) Jonny: to get your inventory to like 25 or 30 slots which is like really like it’s it’s it’s very good once you get it that far so that was that was just Honestly, it made it so fun because if you feel like you’re just running around the world doing what you want to do and you’re not Doing an inventory management thing. That’s just annoying and frustrating Oh and and just sort of for the the final thing because it’s really important to call access really good is the the crafting pu

Welcome to our first Beyond Hyrule episode! These episodes will be where we periodically discuss a game outside the Zelda series. For this first Beyond Hyrule, we welcome Maddie, the youngest of the Short siblings! Maddie grew up watching Tanner and Timmi play Zelda, and then she got into them herself throughout elementary school. She's played Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Oracle of Seasons, Skyward Sword (which she recently beat for the first time), and Breath of the Wild. This week, she and Timmi give us a beginner's look at Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Animal Crossing is a Sims-style game from Nintendo, and the main goal of New Horizons is called Project K, an initiative to create a 3-star island suitable for the popstar, K. K. Slider. You accomplish this by building houses, bridges, and inclines for the people who come to live on your island. There are also other islands you can visit, such as Harv's island, to make money and meet villagers. There is also a DLC called the Happy Home Paradise that lets you work on a vacation resort to save up money and find fancy furniture. You can also visit other people's islands. You can "dream" into random islands of other players, use a dream code to visit a specific island, or visit the island of a Switch friend. Your island can become home to various personalities of villagers. You can get visitors if you have camping sites setup, or you can interact with the typical villagers common to the game. You meet Blathers the owl early on who collects bugs, fish, and fossils to eventually set up a museum. There's also the mayor, Tom Nook, who offers you loans to build new buildings, and his two sons, Tommy and Timmy, who set up a store called Nook's Cranny. Other villagers come and go, selling you their wares as they come. Then there are the other 400 collective villagers. There is a large range of Animal Crossing fans, and one hub for fans on the internet is Nookazon where players can buy and trade villagers. Maddie's favorite villager is Marina the octopus because of her bubbly personality, and Timmi's favorite villager is her tubby penguin Wade because he's simply adorable. Earning money is a major factor of gameplay. It can be hard to get started, so you can sponsor friends if they visit your island. You can also trade in artifacts at Blathers' museum, trade turnips in a stock-market type system, or you can collect Nook Miles to redeem for bells (the currency of the game). There are tons of other creative ways to earn bells, and the money helps you build up the island for Project K. When Project K is complete, you are given the ability to terraform and let creativity run wild on your island. Overall, this is an amazing game that lets players relax and created their island however they want. The objective is simple enough too to lure anybody into the game. In the future, Timmi and Maddie hope to see an easier path to initially saving up bells, as well as more DIY recipes and customizable furniture. This episode is rated Beginner. Discussion topics are broad and tailored to all levels of gamer, especially those who have never played Animal Crossing. Spoilers for games are at a minimum. The Duo spend way too much time talking about cottagecore, Tom Nook, and Red Dawn. Also, they both turn into elitist, corporate shills.

This week Eric, Nicky, and special guest Shelby Harmes discuss the past, present, and future of Animal Crossing: New Horizons by Nintendo in a Plucky Aficionado episode of Press any Button. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a real time social simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Switch. You control a character who moves to a deserted island after purchasing a getaway package from Tom Nook, playing the game in a nonlinear fashion and developing the island as you choose. You can gather and craft items, customize the island, and develop it into a community of anthropomorphic animals. About us: Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games - Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games - Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Shelby Harmes Music by Eric Stetson and Mark Spurlock References: https://animalcrossing.fandom.com/wiki/Animal_Crossing:_New_Horizons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Crossing:_New_Horizons https://animalcrossing.fandom.com/wiki/Version_history_(New_Horizons) https://www.dexerto.com/animal-crossing/nintendo-is-killing-animal-crossing-new-horizons-by-stopping-support-way-too-early-1689781/ https://gamerant.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-hidden-secrets-easter-eggs/

We might as well change the name of our podcast to The Blath, the Whole Blath, and Nothing But the Blath...ers, because this episode is probably 90% about Animal Crossing (which is in no way related to Don Bluth). Sure, we intended for it to be an update on our lives and what's in store for the podcast, but it turns out our podcast updates are short and we have no lives outside of Tom Nook's happy version of capitalism. And you probably don't either, if you've been social distancing properly. But we hope this episode satisfies your need (was there any?) for our witty banter, or at least our familiar meandering tangents, and yes we do actually bring up animation of sorts!
