Cher talks about her weight loss journey as a therapist and parent coach (Please see her bio below with links) Cher has had lifelong struggles with her weight and health, from Hashimotos Disease to high cholesterol to Perimenopause being part of some of the reasons she felt she had to eat a restricted diet. We talked about gaining weight back, how strict dieting that she did to try to improve autoimmune health lead her to disordered eating habits and weren't helping her situation overall, through working privately with me she was able to realize it was her emotions she needed to tend to - Even though she wasn't emotionally eating, we focused on emotions and through that work she was able to lose 18 pounds and has kept that off ever since and it's been almost a year! She felt that the weight loss was easy and playful! She talked about how that might have triggered her in the past because she may have believed it was not possible to have it work out that way! We talked about health issues manifesting as a result of childhood traumas and that Cher had blood tests done before working together and she had genetic high cholesterol and her thyroid function markers according to the blood test weren't great prior to working with me. Three months later after coaching with me she had a blood test and her cholesterol and thyroid markers were better than they've ever been!! Do you notice how everyone is constantly focused on age? Society really plays a large role in how “old” we feel and how we look at ourselves. I'm always looking at my perception of the world and my life and I want to be able to fix this. I'm almost 36 years old and I found myself having a lot of anxiety over my age. We have been in and out of lockdown for almost two years in Melbourne and I feel a sense of time being taken away from me. This really made me want to change my perspective of age and how I look at it without grieving the past and loss of time. I want to talk to you about the process of me changing my perspective around age and seeing the world in a different way. I am constantly wondering why I am so caught up in the number of what age I am. It feels like the second you turn 25, you are “old.” People seem to think you are on a downhill path as you approach 30. Thinking about how much time I have left instead of how old I actually am has helped me change the way I think about things. It has made me think differently about the concept that my time is running out. Maybe you're scared to put yourself out there, start a new career, find a new partner, or go back to school. What if you want to write a book, or start a business, or lose weight. You get caught up in your age and how things are just happening to you instead of you being able to create your own reality. There are no rules to what you can and cannot do at a certain age. You can start a new career at any age. You can lose weight at any age. You can start exercising again at any age. I've noticed this trend going on recently. People have mastered an area of their life through manifestation. Maybe they manifested their dream home, their partner, a car, or an outfit they've been looking for. But when it comes to weight loss, they say it doesn't work for that. The laws of the universe don't just suddenly adjust themselves for weight loss. If you are paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, than it doesn't mean that it is working while you are visualizing yourself living in your dream home and not when you want to lose weight. Manifestation is about action. It means that there is an alignment between your actions, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs because action is behavior. When you take action to search for a job, find a new house on the internet, or meet your soulmate through online dating, that is a behavior. Behaviors come from thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. So it all goes hand in hand. If you are doing something like starting a business, a lot more action has to go into all the steps it takes to get started. With weight loss, there is a lot less action that has to happen. You already eat every day, so it is nothing extra. Initially the first few months will be a lot of work and require lots of action. But after a few months, it will become natural to you and you will lose that long term dieting mentality. Emotional eating is pretty easy to overcome, I've see it in my clients. Lots of people gain weight because of emotions. You over eat when you're sad, you eat more when you're happy, etc. We help you treat the root of the weight, which is emotional eating. Feeling some sort of heaviness? What about an inability to take action? Just not able to get clarity? I call this Brain Fog. Maybe you're trying to lose weight and you just feel confused or overwhelmed. You don't really know what steps to take or what actions come next. That can be brain fog. Brain fog can mean that sometimes you really beat yourself up with the mentality of getting things done. For instance, get up off the couch, go to the gym, get groceries, and meal prep, and get your shit together. Making yourself feel terrible. Sometimes you might see headlines about not eating too much and being disciplined which can lead to some huge brain fog in this area. Those headlines don't take into account binge eating because of being too disciplined, traumas around food, or different relationships. An inability to take action in all of these things or mindlessly going through life wondering what to do next is what I might consider brain fog. You might be stuck in a rut, or frozen. You lack clarity, feel overwhelmed, and are constantly wondering where the time has gone and what to do next. This isn't just a weight loss thing. This is universal to money, relationships, weight loss, etc. So, how do we overcome it and clear the mental fog? Well, we need to do the mindset and the trauma work. We need to heal. Don't try to run a marathon when you have a broken leg. You have to get past the clarity block before you can overcome the brain fog. Podcast Episode 152 I was told at age 15 that I was fat. I was convinced from that moment on that something was wrong with me. I decided I wasn’t going to eat anymore. I had so much shame around my body from that point onwards and I developed a massive eating disorder as a teenager. Think back to a time when you were a teenager looking at a magazine. You probably found yourself thinking that the woman on the cover looks fat, even though she looks absolutely amazing. Society has done this to us. Society has had a huge part in conditioning us to believe that one weight or a certain type of body is better than another. Even when you are at a healthy weight, you are fed messages that the women you see are fat, and if that’s true then you must also be fat. There is so much focus on a woman’s body. Women’s bodies are more scrutinized than a man’s body. Everyone seems to have an opinion about our bodies. Well I’m here to tell you: You have a right to feel good, comfortable, and confident in your body right now as it is. You have a right to do what you want with your body. That might mean losing weight, getting cosmetic surgeries, getting Botox, wearing or not wearing makeup, dressing the way you want. Whatever it is that makes you feel happy, you have a right to do that. Love yourself, love the way your body looks. Not only that, but realize there is more to life than what you look like. Imagine you are going to work and you meet someone who is loosing weight. They look amazing and you are insanely jealous. And then she tells you all about this new lose weight quick diet plan that she is on and you want in. You get all the things you need and you decide to start. . . Tomorrow. I know you’ve done this. Because that is what I’ve done. I’ve told myself that I’m going to wake up tomorrow and be this completely new person, but for today I get to be that person who eats everything out of the cupboards. And just get the euphoria of everything that is going to change later. This is trauma. Somewhere along the line, you developed trauma. You’ve been taught to repress emotions or avoid emotions, and basically just not regulate your nervous system correctly. And this is where the euphoria of a new diet comes into play. You have reinforced the need to have a problem (aka gaining the weight back) because you are reinforcing the coping mechanism. Your brain would rather focus on controlling your weight than your emotions. Weight loss is your healing fantasy. It’s time to look at yourself and ask why you keep running from yourself. Because at the end of the day, you can lose weight physically. And yes, you will feel euphoria in the beginning. But when that dies down, you are still within your body. You need to learn to feel good in it and heal within as well. I’m not telling you that you can’t lose weight. I want to help you heal and stop the cycle of constant weight loss and weight gain. Do you think it's possible to defy science with manifestation and make the impossible possible? Is it possible to manifest (aka think) my way into my dream body by never exercising, not trying to eat healthy, and sitting on the couch and gorging on junk food all day? Can the power of manifestation be used to defy science in this way? Here’s the thing: Never exercising, not wanting to eat healthy, and wanting to eat junk food all day are signs of emotional issues. There are so many layers to this. Food and weight issues are just secondary to the original issues you might have. Learning to deal with and cope with past traumas is the real issue. You develop so many coping mechanisms like obsessions with diet, exercise, and weight gain. But healing those relationships to food and trusting your body needs to come first. If you are really healed from your childhood trauma, you won’t desire to gorge on junk food all day. Not that you will be perfect and never have an issue again, but if you are healed from the emotional issues, you won’t desire these things. Your true essence is wanting to live, wanting to be happy, and wanting to move your body. Are your thoughts preoccupied with food and weight? Maybe they are consumed with weight loss? Or how you're going to lose weight? You know when you have those emotions. When you feel inadequate, you feel inferior, and you loathe yourself and you want to hide and disappear? You think that the solution is to lose weight. Because you feel exposed, you feel humiliated, they can see your flaws. Your brain has come to the conclusion that if I lose weight, I will get rid of this emotion of shame. And people will love me. A lot of people say, “I’m not an emotional eater.” That’s fine. But there are still emotions involved as to why you are holding on to weight or fluctuating weight. Emotional eating isn’t the best term to use when describing this. But it’s really about shifting your emotional relationship to food in your body. Another way to describe it is determining the reason why people hold on to weight. The foundation of everything in life is our emotions. What does it look like to have an obsession with your weight? It looks like you've been trying to do the task of losing weight for years. Perhaps sometimes you've even succeeded. But the majority of the time you feel helpless. You cycle between periods of being successful, and being unsuccessful. And during your periods of being unsuccessful, you want to run from your body. You'll have episodes where you feel so uncomfortable in your body that you just want to find something or someone that can make it go away. That is a sure sign that there is emotional shit that you're running from 100%. Your ability to feel comfortable and confident in your body has nothing to do with your weight. It's got to do with the pathways in your brain. It has to do with the emotions involved with eating. When you embark on manifesting weight loss, and you start doing this work, you are going to start to have such a profound amount of understanding about yourself. You will have healing and you will get better and you will improve all areas of your life and eventually lose weight as well. There can be reasons why we hold onto weight and this can be for safety, security, it's about your unmet needs, your self doubts, the dissatisfaction you have with life, boredom, feeling empty, or maybe you feel taken advantage of. We have developed issues with getting our needs met and all the things listed above and then we develop weight and food issues and then we develop limiting beliefs such as "I'm lazy" or "I have a slow metabolism." We develop these limiting beliefs to add meaning to why we are struggling but sometimes that reason actually limits us even more. We are not here to suffer around food and weight. You are suffering because of the negative associations and relations that you have with food and weight that is causing your suffering. There is emotional work to be done. People are focusing on diet and exercise and that is part of the equation, yes. But it is also the mental associations that you have because your behavior is going to stem from your emotions. Dieting gets a bad rap because of the relationship it can create with food. It's not just the dieting that is the issue, it's also the energy you are in. This isn't just about weight loss, this is about creating your desired outcome. You don't just want to lose weight, you also want ease around your food decisions. Because you are codependent and are constantly putting yourself out and putting others first. You have to get your needs met by food. You’re a perfectionist. You have to overeat because you are drained of energy. The list goes on and on. Truth is, you need to start listening to your body and be more of an intuitive person and reframe the way you perceive success. You need to learn to not give a fuck and learn how to live your life. How do you make your decisions around food? That is the real question. If you are not being consistent that is linked to your decisions around food and your decision making around food depends on your belief systems and your emotions. Just because you are struggling does not mean you are not growing. It is a process. You will have your ups and downs. Trust me. I had to rise above and decide that I was going to create a new reality for myself and that is what I want for you. When you say you are having trouble staying consistent you are falling for that story that you have to continue to struggle. Your idea of being consistent is not by being consistent. It is by being perfect. And success is not created by perfectionism. If you are saying you struggle it is because you need to change your perception of what consistency means to you. It's not just about losing the weight, Babe. It's about losing the lifestyle that got you there. I'm not here to tell you that you should ditch eating chocolate and ditch eating ice cream because that's your poor lifestyle and you're a bad person if you order takeaway, okay? What I'm here to tell you is that shame has been imposed on you. That shame surrounds food and the guilt and is actually coming from toxic shame that's been imposed on you from others. It actually has nothing to do with food at all but we're all spreading more and more shame and guilt. Instead of getting to the root of these weight issues we're worried about if we are doing the right thing around food. There's nothing wrong with setting an intention to lose weight and following through. What the issue is is the shame and the guilt that is there and the shame and the guilt is there because there is work to be done on the psyche and moving beyond the childhood trauma that causes us to carry toxic shame and guilt, because how you do one thing is how you do everything. This is more than just about your weight. Your weight is like the symptom of a deeper issue that is coming from your childhood and that needs to be healed and then you can do whatever you like with your weight because it will be very simple and straightforward if you choose to do something about it. It's about developing autonomy so that you know you are in charge of that decision and no one else. People are saying anti-diet but they are encouraging people to not listen to themselves and they are still encouraging this codependency and merging with others. Learn to trust yourself enough so that you do not need to be told what to do. You know and trust that you are being guided, that you know what is right for you. Is it possible to diet in alignment? The answer is YES. Alignment and intuitive eating is about connection. The dieting mindset is what causes people to feel like they're doing something bad or wrong if they don't stick to a diet. Dieting and Alignment means you know you're in charge. You're not seeking permission from anyone about what you should be eating. You have structures that you can follow but you are always prioritizing how you feel. Doing surface-level work isn’t sustainable when it comes to weight loss. You have to dig into the deeper mind work. Understand yourself as a person and how you operate. So when it comes to mindful, slow eating, there are many layers to look at why we struggle with this concept. And I say we because it is something that I still have to be mindful about. I wouldn’t say that I struggle with it any longer, but I have to be mindful of being mindful while eating. Our natural reactions when we think of weight loss are to look for simple answers. I can eat this, but I can’t eat that. I have to work out this much every week to lose weight. But that ignores the bigger picture and is why it doesn’t work. The big picture is healing your relationship to food. Weight loss is a bonus that comes with it. So it’s time to be honest with yourself. What are you focusing on? How are you making yourself a vibrational match to your weight loss? Our behaviors are driven by the mental payoff that we get when we do something. So if your mind sees more benefit in shutting off over being mindful while you are eating, that is what it will do. This is a form of emotional eating. Are you working on your inner child? If you haven’t started doing that yet, you are probably working on the wrong things when you are trying to lose weight. Signs You May be Operating from a Wounded Child 1 || Immaturity This is the number one cause of emotional eating and it is a sign that growth needs to happen. 2 || Driven to be an Over-Achiever You can either be really, really on, or you are very off in your ability to stick to a work out and diet plan. You always believe that you are inadequate when not “on” so you constantly criticise yourself and try to forcefully control your inner child. “If only I could be that perfect with weight loss, everything would be perfect.” 3 || You Tend to Feel Resentment You are frustrated constantly and resent yourself. You are full of regret and can hate your body and where you currently are in your journey. You are constantly prompted to eat food, but don’t really have any emotions towards it. Your emotions in general seem repressed, you just have food cravings. These are all signs that you need to do some inner work. There are deeper reasons to why you do this to yourself, and it can be changed. Human beings are meant to be emotional. 4 || Very Reactive about your Weight Do you have intense anxiety when you see your weight on the scale or photos of yourself? You try to lose weight from a frantic energy and it is an emotional rollercoaster. If you lose your shit over two pounds, there is some work to do on your inner, wounded child. It’s time to start working on healing & developing a dialogue. You need to think of weight from an adult mindset, not your wounded, inner child. You can do the deep inner work. I want to build a strong foundation for you to lose weight and maintain your ideal weight. And it’s exactly what I aim to set up for you in The No Diet Babe Academy. The fluctuations happen because there is something going on with your mindset with food. As a chronic dieter, the expectation is taht physical change happens fast. But going into a calorie deficit can take 6-12 weeks to start seeing a change. It isn’t instantaneous. Accept where you are in your weight loss journey and stop looking for the quick fix. Striving for lightness or emptiness starts to tip toe around eating disorder thinking. You basically start to dislike the feeling of food in your body. I don’t strive for lightness anymore. I trained myself to enjoy food in my body instead and eating in a consistent way. If you are still wanting this feeling of being light, start to question your reasons behind wanting to feel light. Is there an energy of urgency? Are you wanting to duplicate the quick fix that will most likely put yourself back in this spot again? It’s time to see a different solution. When you lack consistency in one area of your life, it can spread to others. There is a lesson to be seen in everything. One thing that I learned while taking this break from the podcast was that childhood wounds can be a big part of your future struggle with weight loss and many other areas of your life. Take for example when your Ego is using the term Always. As in “you will/have always failed at xyz” This usually comes from a deep childhood wound. This can also be dependency on food or other people and many other things. When I look at why I struggled with weight in the past, I knew my biggest issue was really consistency. The chronic dieter is All or Nothing. Either doing great and really on top of things or completely spiraling and really off. One of the biggest issues with this is that there is more to life to deal with than only focusing on losing weight. When I was on, what I was doing wasn’t sustainable. The energy required to try to sustain this kind of behavior was too hard to maintain and lead to a lack of consistency. I am consistent now because I have selected methods that are sustainable. Now, this method isn’t always the fastest weight-loss method, but it is longer lasting. My Weight Doesn’t Determine My Worth! In dieting, there is A LOT of pressure to perform. This is a giant trigger for perfectionism and negative emotions that stem from that. Frequently, this then leads to self-sabotage as your ego tries to protect you from possible failure.
