DRIVE TIME DEBRIEF with The Whole Physician

Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're diving into *Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship* by Terrence Real. This book has left a deep impact on all three of us, Amanda, Laura, and Kendra, and we're excited to share key insights on how to foster deeper connections in relationships. 1. The Three Selves in Relationships Terrence Real introduces the concepts of the "Wounded Child," "Adaptive Child," and "Wise Adult" within us. Each part can impact our interactions, especially in times of stress. For example, when stress triggers the Adaptive Child, we might revert to defensive, perfectionistic, or rigid responses, limiting our ability to connect. 2. Moving Toward the Wise Adult The Wise Adult is the part of us capable of emotional regulation, grounded in the present moment, and focused on the “us” in relationships rather than just "me versus you." Practicing "relational mindfulness," as Real describes it, helps us move from reactionary behavior to thoughtful responses that prioritize the relationship. 3. Relational Mindfulness and Power Dynamics Real's approach encourages moving from a "power-over" to a "power-with" perspective. Relational mindfulness is about becoming aware of our own impulses and prioritizing the relationship ecosystem over individual needs. This doesn't mean neglecting personal needs but rather not letting those needs dominate interactions. 4. Relational Heroism Real's wife, Belinda, coined the term "relational heroism" for moments when, instead of defaulting to old habits, we choose connection and insight. This shift from automatic, defensive reactions to thoughtful, relational actions requires self-awareness and discipline. 5. Self-Responsibility and Maturity Maturity in relationships involves taking full responsibility for our actions and emotional triggers. This means acknowledging when we're operating from an adaptive, defensive place rather than our wise, grounded self. Understanding our reactions and managing triggers is essential for healthier connections. 6. Interpersonal Neurobiology Real touches on the science of how our central nervous system and relationships are deeply intertwined. Our early life experiences shape how we perceive intimacy and connection in adult relationships. Relationships are meant to be a source of co-regulation, enhancing our physical and emotional well-being. 7. The Importance of Connection Real discusses “Social Baseline Theory,” which emphasizes the evolutionary benefits of social connections. These connections help us conserve energy, regulate emotions, and mitigate risk. This need for connection is evident in research on loneliness and isolation, underscoring the importance of close, supportive relationships. 8. Understanding Subjective Reality Real emphasizes that subjective experience is often more important than objective facts. Accepting your partner's perception of reality can improve understanding and reduce conflict, shifting from a “me versus you” mentality to an “us” mindset. 9. The Framework of Connection True intimacy is built through awareness of each other's needs, emotions, and triggers. Individuality has its place, but lasting relationships thrive on mutual understanding, shared values, and a focus on connection over competition. Additional Resources and Final Thoughts As we continue our journey through this book, we invite you to explore Real's work, available in his books, online resources, and YouTube videos. As children raised by imperfect parents, we all have “core wounds” that inform much of our life. We may have had experiences we did not know how to process, and therefore made up stories of what those things meant that we still carry with us today. As we get older, we adapt and learn to navigate those painful stories through our various adaptations. Then as adults, we have an opportunity to look at some of our adaptations, and evaluate if they are still serving us, or if we can let them go. In this episode, I explore 3 roles children are often “cast” in that can create issues later in life if not evaluated and healed. You will likely see yourself and those you love most in some of these roles, and gain some insight into your own behavior, as well as the behaviors of your partner/loved ones. You will also leave with some tangible ideas of how to navigate next steps in healing those parts that need gentle love and nurturing. Have you ever felt like you're just not enough? This feeling, believe it or not, often stems from our childhood. It's all about the love we did or didn't get – from our parents, friends, siblings. Think about those times when attention, nurturing, and even simple conversations were rare. And how often were you told, “Be quiet. Speak only when you're spoken to”? It's like we were packed into an invisible box and told to stay there, silent. This absence of love and voice leaves us feeling insecure. We end up craving validation from others, almost like a seal of approval that says, 'Yes, you're good enough!' It's as if every 'thanks' or 'good job' from someone else is a tiny band-aid on a much deeper wound. But here's the catch – true transformation starts with looking back at your childhood. It's hard but necessary. In one of the previous episodes, I said, 'You're an adult, but inside, you might still be that child.' Yes, we grow up, our bodies get bigger, but what about our emotions, our confidence, our inner power? If these don't mature, we're just grown-ups with unhealed childhood scars. Ignoring our past, thinking it's just 'the past,' doesn't cut it. It's there, in your head, living rent-free. To truly move forward, you need to face it, show it some love. When you start to love yourself, really fight for it, that's when the healing starts. So, are you ready to step out of that invisible box? Join me in this week's episode, where I'll explore how healing from within helps you live in greatness, not fear. Let's unpack those childhood boxes together and find our true selves. It's going to be a journey, but trust me – it's one worth taking. Let's dive in! Join Bethany as she welcomes listeners into a top three countdown for the next three weeks. Welcome back to the kitchen table. As mothers, one of our most challenging experiences is watching our children navigate difficult seasons. The pain of seeing them struggle with loss, loneliness, and emotional hurt can be overwhelming, and so often, we find ourselves entrenched in their pain. In today's episode, Bethany guides listeners through the process of letting go and walking alongside our children without becoming entangled in their pain.   The challenges our children face, whether bullying, shattered dreams, or the turmoil of friendships, deeply affect us. As parents, our hearts ache when they hurt. But it's important to remember that we aren't meant to fix every situation. Perfection isn't the goal of parenting; instead, it's about being a steadfast presence that embodies trust and faith rooted in scripture.   While we can't remove all obstacles from our children's paths, we can equip them with truth from scripture and remind them of God's commitment to navigate these challenges. These reminders keep us grounded in our faith, providing guidance and wisdom when navigating difficult situations. Bethany shares word pictures and scriptures to share with your children to strengthen their spiritual foundation and support them in their struggles.   Remember, your role isn't to create a perfect childhood but to provide unwavering support as they follow their path, guided by the Holy Spirit. Inner Child work has become a more broadly recognized terms in recent years due to the increased awareness around the importance of addressing and healing trauma. More specifically, trauma experienced in childhood. The majority of our long-standing core false beliefs stem from messages we received and understandings we developed in the first few years of our lives. These understandings often came from things that happened to us including abuse, neglect, rejection, and other hurtful experiences. When the traumatic events occurred the energy is stored in our bodies, unresolved, and evermore impacting our decisions, actions, and lives. Hence the importance and benefits of inner child work to identify and release these painful, damaging emotions.  In this Identify and Heal Solo episode, I offer an overview of what Inner Child work actually means and entails, how the wounding comes about, and the ways to begin to begin addressing and healing it. The “Inner Child” is a concept developed by CG Jung and further developed over the years by both pop psychologists and analytical psychology. It represents the childlike aspects of each of us. Ideally, we are connected with the wonder, joy and excitement of our inner child. However, if we have experienced childhood trauma, our inner child can become a wounded child, resulting in feelings in adulthood of shame, guilt, anxiety and other negative emotions. In this episode, Ted discusses signs that your inner child may be a wounded child, and more importantly, how to heal that part of you. TedinYourHead.com

Today we're continuing our series on the Wild Mind by diving into a different facet: the South. The South is about our wilderness, our emotions, our sensuality, and sense of belonging in the world - the natural world. I love talking about the South because I feel like it has been a strength in my life, especially at times like when I was at UC Santa Cruz (a clothing-optional University at the time), living amongst the ancient redwoods, dancing wildly to drum circles on the beach, and riding my bike to sit under my favorite acacia tree and watch the sunset; or when I was a climbing guide and slept under the stars over 250 nights each year, and having playful meetups with lovers all over the world. The energy of the South is returning to me as I intentionally create more time in the wilderness and to connect with my place in this world in this new iteration as mom and online biz gal. You know, we seem to forget as humans that we are also animals. And we tend to default to human exceptionalism, an idea that we're better than other species, or that we hold more value. Even in Buddhism it's said that because of the type of sentience we have and the capacities of our brain, that humans can achieve enlightenment more efficiently and make greater progress on the path, helping more beings along the way. But the flip side is that we can also cause more harm than other species, right? And the disconnect from nature and the resulting harm gets even more out of control the more we forget that we are also animals - we have had, and continue to have, a symbiotic relationship with other beings, plants, and the Earth.  This is where the South comes in. The South (for those in the Northern hemisphere - if you're in the Southern hemisphere, flip the North and South in this series) is the place with the most sun, the most warmth. Humans are outside more, exploring more, watching the sunsets and sunrises, connecting to the natural world. And with it, there's a more playful, relaxed, warm energy in our hearts. These qualities of the South are so important to Soul work because the type of adventures and explorations that we often encounter on the path and during altered state journeys often contain symbols, messages from our subconscious minds, aspects of our collective consciousness, and more. To navigate all this, we need to cultivate our instinct - our ability to trust and respond even without thinking. This is the domain of the South. The South also allows us to tap into the deep knowing that we belong here, just as we are. It helps us mitigate fears that may arise about being untethered to any sense of home. It allows us to trust that what arises is for our greatest good, because it IS. We become intimate with our Inner Healing Wisdom. Bill Plotkin calls the healthy facet of the South the “Wild Indigenous One.” It's not an invitation to cultural appropriation, but rather a reminder that we all descend from a lineage of indigenous people, and that when we are in touch with that and how it is alive in us now, we are fully and passionately at home in our bodies and in the natural world... How do we know we're in the South? If you've ever connected with another species, like having a silent moment with a wild animal while hiking or running, or having your pet come lick your tears, knowing what you need, or appreciating the gentle cradling from a favorite tree as you sit in its branches - that's the South. If you've fully appreciated being born in a human body and all the sensual pleasures and experiences it allows - sunsets, wild uninhibited sex, hot chocolate, trail runs, massages. Yum!  Or enjoyed what it's like to fully feel an emotion as it moves through your body, feeling alive and present in the world - even when the emotion is a challenging one… Then you have felt and connected with your Wild Indigenous One. I remember once, after a breakup, I was thinking about all the great times I had with this lover and the things we created together. As I reflected on how we were moving on and felt the sadness, I started to cry… but I was surprised when I noticed I was also in deep gratitude for the beauty of being alive, for ALL the complexity of emotions available to me.  How beautiful it was that I was alive and that I had the capacity to feel the entire range of emotions, from love and passion and bliss and pure joy to grief and loss. How this pain was 100% worth it. You might start to realize that the South has been actively suppressed in most modern industrialized societies. This makes sense, because the South helps us tap into our unconditional worth and belonging, while capitalism and consumerist culture thrive on having us believe that those things come from the outside, from things we can buy and that we “need” to be whole…and consequently, also things that can be lost or taken away. This is why actively cultivating the qualities of the South is essential - now more than ever. When we are in our South, we recognize the Buddhist concept of interconnectedness - that everything in the Universe and on this planet has come into being due to its relationship to - and dependence upon - everything else. We fell this more intuitively when we're in nature. We also open to full emotional expression. While the balanced South doesn't see emotions as toxic and doesn't suppress them, our South subpersonalities have a very different experience of our emotions. When we react to events through the filter of our woundedness, our emotions often seem unpleasant, and we may then end up acting on our emotions in ways that harm ourselves or others; acting in toxic ways, even towards ourselves. These subpersonalities are unbalanced or uncultivated parts of ourselves. They're generally thought of as the Wounded Children, as they often have the common theme of fear of being abandoned again. When they are activated, it feels as if the world is going to end - even as adults. I think of a temper tantrum of a toddler that feels all is lost because of a lost toy, and throws themselves onto the floor thrashing about. This is what we do when our Wounded Child arises when we're grown-ass adults - an adult version of this (and for some of us it might still look similar to this;). There are several subpersonality types that exist in the South, and I go into them in a lot more depth in the full episode, but one I'd like to highlight here is The Rebel. The Rebel is generally “against it,” no matter what “it” is. They may have had opportunities to make more money but refuse to do so, because they don't want to “give into the man.” Even if it's not compromising deep values and even if they can't pay their bills and end up with infinite money stress. They often don't trust anyone in “the establishment” (or in life), usually because of an abandonment they've experienced before. Despite the tough outer shell, there's this underlying belief that they aren't worthy or qualified for the rewards of mainstream society in more traditional ways (like money and success). So they rebel against almost everything: religion, teachers, parents, anything from dominant culture. This subpersonality is common in those of us from the poverty classes and oppressed people (myself included!), and for good reason, as these groups are traditionally marginalized in white-supremacist capitalist culture and feed this rebel tendency. However, this sub is also quite prevalent in other groups. Of course, being a rebel isn't all bad. It's actually pretty awesome, right? We tend to have more freedom and know how to have a great time. A popular saying in Camp 4 between us dirtbags was from economist Thorstein Veblen: “At either end of the social spectrum there lies a leisure class.”  But when this rebellion comes from a wounded place, we're often causing ourselves - or others - unnecessary harm. When I was living in my car as a climbing guide, I felt so much pride in needing so little to feel free and alive. To not “need” to work excessively. But I also had a better-than-thou attitude and had no qualms about ripping off those I considered to be privileged and “better off.” I remember once a Walmart cashier didn't scan one of my larger items, and I didn't mention anything. Stick it to the man! But still… stealing. I checked these less healthy parts of me once I started to heal that wounded child in me. But I still like to get away with shit;) Just as the North's Loyal Soldiers can be called Protectors, the South's Wounded Children can be called Orphans. Most of us weren't literally orphaned, but all of us experienced, at some point of another, and kind of loneliness of our psyche, an abandonment in that sense - key moments in our life when we realized holy shit, no one is watching out for me right now and I have to fend for myself. Even if our family was fairly supportive, at some point we felt…alone. The wounded emotional basis of the Southern subs arises because while we, as adults, may have learned to manage our emotions to some extent - repress them. Managed emotions aren't fully processed emotions, and fully processing them is what we need in order to continue developing in a healthy way.  What's happening here is really a disconnect from our authenticity in order to gain some degree of safety - physical or emotional. But when we do this, we forget who we really are, what we really want, and why we're really here. We forget that we're not here to DO more and more and more. We're here to BE who we authentically are, because that is why we were born. The discovery of who we authentically are and what we truly desire is the journey of the South, and one that's very common on the Adventure Mastermind. Because of this disconnect from our authenticity, the wounded South often shows up as emotional reactivity, impulsive behavior that takes us by surprise, feeling as if our emotions and reactions arose out of nowhere, out of our control. How can we start to process our emotions and integrate them back into us? There are 4 essential steps: // Understand and identify what emotion(s) our Wounded Child is feeling.// What happened (or what do they think happened) that elicited the emotion?// Understand that it makes perfect sense that they'd be feeling exactly those emotions under those circumstances. “Anyone in that same situation would have done the same thing.” This is truer than many of us would like to admit.// Understand what this tells you about them (aka YOU). After this, the most important piece is that we take action, because our challenging emotions arise when we aren't having basic needs met. But the problem is when our South isn't healthy, we believe others need to fit it and that we aren't capable of doing it (or shouldn't have to). Therefore, taking action is key so that we bring this sovereignty back into ourselves. We can figure out how we can act on our emotions and the information they give us. Maybe we need to create better boundaries and stick to them. Perhaps we need to take more time for self-care - pr leave a toxic job or relationship. We can listen and do things differently...  What's one thing you can do today to more fully cultivate and integrate your South? Something that will help it grow, like time in nature or dancing naked in your kitchen. Or perhaps something that will help you get to know your wounded child better, and learn to care for them? Pick one small thing to do today to get closer to the Wild One in you.  In this episode, you'll learn:// What the sensuous, embodied, and emotive energy of the South means to our Wild Mind and why it's so important for Soul work// How we can connect deeply with our Wild Indigenous One, despite society's attempts to repress it// What the South's subpersonalities are, and 4 steps we can take to assimilate them in a healthy way Resources:// Episode 128: Bearing Witness - Who Did You Tell?  // Episode 135: Reclaiming Parts of Ourselves // Episode 142: Your Wild Mind - The North + Protectors // Wild Mind, by Bill Plotkin  // If you're new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Hello, and welcome to The Let the Rest Burn. I am starting the year with our first shadow archetype - The Wounded Child. Firstly, we must comprehend how essential it is to deepen our understanding of the Wounded Child's purpose. The Wounded Child wants to recreate childhood patterns to change the ending. She wants to be loved differently, and she wants it now. Healing this piece of your story is crucial to moving through all the other parts of your shadow. On this episode of “The Language of Love,” I am sitting down for a very special Sessions conversation. During Sessions, I get to talk to real listeners just like you and give them personalized, real-time advice to help address all of their questions about sex, love, and relationships. Today I am speaking with Mary. Mary reached out to me after seeing a post I made on social media about the wounded child that can often lives within many of us. If you have trauma in your past (who doesn't?) and you haven't fully addressed and processed that trauma, you might too have an inner wounded child who is crying out for attention and healing. Mary shares with me some of the things that deeply traumatized her as a child, including how her mother would prioritize men over raising her children. Mary still carries that trauma with her into her own romantic life and beyond. I help her to understand how she can meet her inner wounded child and help that child heal. If the concept of an inner wounded child sounds familiar, here are some signs that you might have an inner wounded child: ⧿ Fear of abandonment and/or the belief that no one will ever stay with you if they see the ‘real' you ⧿ Problematic boundaries: You let people walk all over you and reveal all your deepest secrets and vulnerabilities right away…or the flip side, you never truly let people in, even those who have known you for years ⧿ You are ashamed of expressing your own emotions: People with a traumatic or troubled childhood may have learned that it was important to hide their fear or sadness or anger from the adults in their lives, and this behavior can carry on into your own adulthood ⧿ You never trust anyone. You have a subconscious (or conscious) suspicion of everyone, even you: You struggle to trust your own judgement or believe your own recollections of events. ⧿ Conflict avoidant: You run from conflict and bury your head in the sand when people mistreat you or those you love. You want to stand up for yourself but you don't have the tools or resources to do so. Listen to this episode and let me know your thoughts!

It's not at all uncommon to feel confronted by how difficult it can be to access these more radiant aspects of self-belonging and self-expression. Self-consciousness and fear of being judged or shut down is a real thing — and plenty of us have had the experience of it not being safe to be our own version of playful, goofy and curious. In this episode, we're talking about what bridges we've built from self-consciousness into a more open kind of self-expression, how it's a constantly-evolving process, and how play shows up in our individual lives. #9. Join me for this interview with Ellie Hadsall.  A self-described spiritual mentor and author, the twists and turns of her life have led her on a wildly imaginitive and rewarding journey.  Ellie's most recent book Meditation, a Journey in Self-Fulfillment is a "multi-cultural how-to meditation manual."  The book includes real-life experiences of clients and friends, revealing the profound impact meditation has had on their lives.  Her early career as a Dale Carnegie trainer morphed into a successful HR consulting firm she ran with her husband Ron.  While wildly successful in business, she realized that the spoke of spirituality in her own “Circle of Life” was lacking.  She was led to Kriya Yoga and her teacher Roy Eugene Davis after an encounter with the book “Autobiography of a Yogi,” which moved her in a way she could not have imagined.  Kriya yoga is the “yoga of action.”  Imbibing knowledge without putting it into practice was deemed insufficient.  True to this spirit, she opened a kriya yoga center in Dallas while simultaneously serving as minister of a New Thought church.  Having caught more than a glimpse of the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, Ellie and her husband Ron were drawn to become more deeply connected with its wisdom.  They left their comfortable life in Texas and headed to New Mexico to work with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute.  Ellie served as Director of Education for over ten years, a role that enriched her life in ways she never thought possible.  She introduced the practice of Vedic fire ceremony called agnihotra to the students – bringing them the unique opportunity to restore harmony to their environment. In recent years, Ellie has turned to writing fiction.  She is the author of the successful series “The Cave Time Chronicles.”  Contemplating what her life could be like if she lived totally in accordance with spiritual principles, Ellie received “a download," a series of books that would allow her to explore this question.  The books are chronological.  Each book ends with intimations of where her main character is headed next as she travels through parallel universes.  When writing, Ellie travels with her characters.  Like most journeyers, she encounters many surprises along the way.  She introduces elements of her own spiritual path in the series:  sacred chant, meditation, agnihotra.  To Ellie, these books represent the potential of creativity.  “When you are willing to hold the space for possibilities, possibilities occur.”  The Cave Time Chronicles bring a relevant message to our contemporary world.  “While we may think self-protection is required under some circumstances, we can easily see that fear and anger come from deep wounds, usually experienced in childhood.”  (Ellie views her protagonist in Pathwalker – the first in the series- as a wounded child.)  “We can choose to practice nonjudgment and compassion while setting boundaries and being true to ourselves.  Necessary action can be compassionate.  If we act in this way, we experience a different outcome.” Ellie looks at life as a choice – an opportunity to play, to explore.  “What's it like to be an aggressor, to be young, female, male, old.  Life is an adventure.  Try it out.  See what works and what doesn't.  Play means I am not attached to being perfect – you have to be willing to put your creation out there.  You have to have fun with your creative projects.  Don't be afraid of criticism and most of all, don't define yourself by criticism.”Elliehadsall.com  & Cosmicgathering.com FB:  @EllieHadsallAuthorFiction & Nonfiction Books by Ellie:  amazon.com/Ellie-Hadsall/

Today a friend brought my attention to the fact that newspapers are saying that divorce filings are up by 40 percent as couples spend time together in quarantine. Divorce requests currently can't be processed fast enough in China, as couples come out of quarantine. Trauma and fear can bring out our worst sides and make us defensive.  Old resentments get exacerbated and people don't have space to process things alone and to cool down. As a couples counselor and coach, I am always on the side of that relationship. I'm pulling for it to get stronger or at least to remain in place.  So, here are 12 things to keep in mind that might help: Sometimes Adults Need a Time-Out Too Avoid Doing The 4 Horsemen & What to do Instead Think About Your Kids Don't Make Major Decisions When Upset Look for the Wounded Child in Your Mate Learn How to Self-Soothe Do Something that Raises Your Vibration Spend Some Time Remembering the Good Memories & Good Things about Your Mate Consider Marriage Counseling or Couples coaching online Practice Meditation or Some Sort of Relaxation Increase The Good Take Responsibility for Your Part Remember you can get through this and it is not your baseline.  Be willing to look at the part that you are playing in this dance, instead of just playing ‘the blame game.' You can get a copy of my new book, ‘Marriage and the Law of Attraction: The Secret to Creating Your Perfect Relationship,' on Amazon.  It walks you through how to improve your marriage from the inside-out without expecting your partner to change.  It will help you recognize all the ways you can powerfully create the relationship you want, by creating your marriage from the inside- out.  There's no time like the present.
