I haven't had the opportunity to meet this week's guest yet but I hope to at some point. She's a whole vibe and my new favorite DJ. I have been playing this mix almost every day since I got it 2 months ago. The amount of raw soul coming through is really special. Please welcome Toyacoyah. She's is an indigenous DJ known for blending ancestral rhythms with modern breakbeats. She began her DJ career in the late 90s at the University of Oklahoma, curating beats for her own drum and bass radio show. After moving to Austin, Texas, she became a resident DJ for Mental Note, a night dedicated to liquid funk and jazzy drum and bass. Now based in Chicago, she continues to share her passion for fast-tempo music across the Midwest. Toyacoyah has performed alongside top producers like Addison Groove, Luke Vibert, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, and Tim Reaper, delivering sets that span electro, breaks, juke, jungle, and more. Podcast for a deep examination into the career and life choices of Eddie Murphy & Jim Carrey. Joe gets harangued by his imaginary child. Patrick is powerless to help because that's how long distance works. Lev does live close to Joe, but finds it funnier to just sit back and watch. Will Joe find a way to make peace with this little monkey (the imaginary friend is a monkey, I probably should have mentioned that earlier)? The Local Selection Mix returns with a mind bending trip from one of Dublin's most under rated DJs and producers, Outl1er. The young gun has provided an hour of chaotic breakbeats, mind bending synth lines and pounding percussive rhythms. Outl1er returns following his debut release on SafeHaus Selects (SS001) & his Lethe EP. Outl1er has been known to draw on elements of Jungle, IDM & Bass Music. The Dubliner takes clear inspiration from some of the great's within electronic music such as Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, Luke Vibert and many others, who pushed the fragments of electronic music so much that it catapulted genre into vast new territories and burst into tumultuous breakbeats. This lawless kind of energy is felt right through Outl1er's mix as the mix as the vigour escalates to great heights but soon soon's shatters to dust. Outl1er manages to maintain energy throughout even though the mix often breaks down to oblivion on numerous occasions. It's clear the track selection was carefully thought out here and the pairing of track's and moods is carefully orchestrated. Strap in for an uncompromising ride through the low end spectrum, 170+, jungle, and more. The Local Selection mix series this week comes from Cork Native Medb, who supplies us with a fantastic and deep hour of jungle, breaks and D&B to make this a great addition to our series. Currently residing in Australia, Medb recently blew us away with her guest mix for Kate Butler on the much loved @dublindigitalradio. Upon listening to her show, we simply had to request a mix for our series. While in Ireland she was part of the badass DJ duo Really Bad Mother's- [shout out to Bad Mother #2 Rachel] who earned their stripes playing the best in breaks, dubstep and all things bass music. Today she smashes our Wednesday afternoon with a back to back mix of experimental bass, beats and jungle. With tracks from Luke Vibert, LMajor and Om Unit, this local selector has no doubt got a serious selection of records we want to hear more of. @phasepattern's contribution to our podcast series is called "London is a Country" and can be listened to as a bass heavy reflection on his 20 years long stay in the city which ended this year with his return to Germany. The title phrase is taken from a tune by Luke Vibert and refers to the city's broad variety of cultures that came with immigrants from all over the world. One fine example that left traces in the recording is the "Windrush Generation" (people that immigrated from the Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1973) as portrayed in the anthology film series Small Axe by Steve McQueen. This is for all lovers and rockers! iTunes: bit.ly/uvpod_itunes Soundcloud: bit.ly/uvpod_sc Website: www.uncannyvalley.de
This week, we have a special guest mix on the show from two stalwarts of the modern Acid scene. Posthhuman is resident and promoter of the I Love Acid parties as well as running the label of the same name and Balkan Vinyl. Johnny Aux is a veteran of the scene best known for being part of Paranoid London. This set was recorded live at I Love Acid on 14th August 2021 and appears in it's entirety exclusively on the CTRL Z podcast. I caught up with Posthuman ahead of the broadcast to find out more about his approach to I Love Acid: 1. After 14 years, the I Love Acid parties seem more popular than ever. What do you think is the secret of your success? Simple really - I've not changed my approach. It is, and has always been, about good music and good people. It's about acid house, but it's not a retrospective night. It's new music, classic music, up & coming DJs and legends, all together. You have also got to listen to people smarter than you, and take their advice. I've been lucky to work with some very wise & experienced heads over the years. My resident DJ and good friend Placid has been a huge influence musically, not just for the party but also for me. Jon Dasilva brings knowledge reaching all the way back to his days as resident at The Hacienda back at the birth of the UK acid house scene. Luke Vibert has remained a driving force behind it all. For a little while I tried to do bigger parties and book bigger "headliner" names but realised quickly that way leads to watering down and compromising the core ethos of the party, involving agencies and corporate influences. So I rolled it back and kept it as a more intimate clubnight. We've always had an inclusive, welcoming door policy - we get youngsters turning up with ID to prove they are over 18, and find them dancing alongside older heads who remember acid house first time round. The crowd is queer, and straight, hardcore fans and total newbies. There's no snobbery. Alongside the records, I've tried to build a family around it all of artists, DJs, and venues and ravers. I try to be there for when they need me, outside of the clubnight. With some DJs the gig is just transactional - they play the show and that's it. But others understand what it's about, that it's more than just another show, with them the relationship carries on. Or at least I'd like to think that's the case - you probably have to ask them! 2. What advice would you give up and coming DJs in the scene? Go to events. Go early, introduce yourself to the people working the door and the promoters. Dance. You never know when your break might come, but if you're not out there getting involved and supporting the scene on the ground it DEFINITELY won't come. You have to make your own luck. And it starts by being there. 3. What is the one tune that never gets old, no matter how many times you play it? Underground Resistance - The Final Frontier.

Over the years we've become familiar with Posthuman's various releases, DJ sets and of course, his much adored and rightfully voted number 1 club night, I Love Acid. Posthuman need little to no introduction. The cousin duo of Rich Bevan and Josh Doherty released a string of IDM albums on labels like Seed, Skam and B12 before turning their attention to a sound that would go on to become a staple of the artists ethos, acid. Doherty went on to found Balkan Vinyl in the late 00's, releasing essential records from Mark Archer, Luke Vibert, Plaid and more. The label also spawned a series of sub-concepts, one being I LOVE ACID, an award winning party series, which also presses acid bangers boasting consistent and instant sell outs, accompanied by personal nostalgic artwork. 1Ø PILLS MATE sub-label Cyberdome follow up their debut release from Slacker with a wicked four track EP that represents the no-fuss, back to basics ethos that Posthuman hold so close. No frills, just high quality dance music. ‘Pleasure Machine' is a squelching cut of acid-electro; robotic vocals, precise drum programming and a minimal approach crafting a track that very much defines the Posthuman aesthetic. The words of UK bassline, dub and electro meet on ‘Titan Descent'; large wubs, ravey wubs and stripped-back production, creating a minimal-styled wobbler that highlights how less can also mean more. Today we premiere the third track on the EP entitled ‘Terror Police', which sounds like its batteries could well be running out, as it's bassy stabs begin to slow across a classic electro beat, before finding themselves back at 100% as a defected rhythm begins to melt. Rounding off the release is a remix from electro royalty DMX Krew, who turns in a typically marshy cut rendition of the ‘Terror Police' OG; a dark and creepy atmospheric journey through the Oblivion gate. Incredible Bongo Band was the brain child of prolific film and record producer Michael Viner, put together in 1972 to supplement the soundtrack to the virtually anonymous B-Movie film The Thing With Two Heads. They went from a loose studio collective to an instrumental pop covers consortium, interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussion-heavy fashion. Viner recorded 'The Incredible Bongo Band' at MGM studios during down time assembling line-ups from whoever was available at the time. Apache, originally made famous by The Shadows, is simply legendary in the worlds of dance music and hip hop. One of the most sampled tracks of all time it has been used by Nas, Beastie Boys, Moby, Kanye West, Sugarhill Gang, Jay-Z, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Goldie, Double Dee & Steinski, Faith Evans, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Leaders Of The New School, UNKLE, IBM Nation and DJ Spinna, The Bizzie Boyz, Schoolly D, LL Cool J, 2 Live Crew, 4 Hero, Godfather Don, Diamond D, Luke Vibert, Sway & King Tech, Rebel MC, to name a few... Apache was a staple for the likes of Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash as they invented the art of DJing at the Bronx block parties of the ‘70s. Over the years it has become a hip hop and breakers anthem and is revered as the break of all original breaks, with the rhythms of this LP even helping to coin the term 'breakbeat'

BLUKE is BluRum13, known to us as a member of the seminal band Bullfrog, and Luke Vibert, known to the world as an elusive performer and master sampler. The duo met in late 90's at a live gig as NinjaTune labelmates. Their first recording together, Smell The Urgency, emerged from the shelves in recent years, and pushed them to record again. Their followup, Sense The Urgency, was released this year on Ropeadope. It is rare that Luke Vibert grants an interview, so we were honored to get some casual time to discuss their mission to save that old school Hip-Hop vibe. "Sense The Urgency" available at https://bluke.bandcamp.com/album/sense-the-urgency Produced by Nick Perri & Steve Eshewsky. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This episode Ru and Harry play, then pull apart, Eddie Rothman's rant against the competitive surfing establishment; geek out over fins and gadgets; then restore your aural aloha with the sweet sounds of Luke Vibert and BJ Cole.
Music from last call to the first train: The return of Plaid and Luke Vibert, Brian Eno in collaboration with Underworld’s Karl Hyde, Kitsuné introduces UK act Panda, Lusine remixes Max Cooper, more from the Micronaut, Prins Thomas names another album after himself, and Fluxion returns with “Broadwalk Tales.” Worth getting lost in.
