My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit.   In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise.  Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Kindle: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Robert Blake Whitehill Website: www.robertblakewhitehill.com X: @rbwhitehill IG: @robertblakewhitehill FB: @Robert Blake Whitehill Bluesky: @rbwhitehill   Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Ebook: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #robertblakewhitehill #deadrise #thriller #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

When the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) folded in 2003, many believed the prospect of a sustainable top-flight women's professional league in America was undermined. The resulting league fragmentation made it difficult for our top US Women's National Team players to compete at the appropriate levels after college between national team camps. When the WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) was founded in 2009, there was once again hope. But, yet again, the league folded within three years. However, coming off the enthusiasm around the women's game in the 2011 World Cup and approaching what would become a gold medal run at the 2012 Olympics for the USWNT, US Soccer regrouped and tried again. The outcome was the establishment of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Leveraging lessons learned from the past, the league focused on creating a sustainable model first, then finding a way to grow from there. The first eight teams included instant success stories in Portland where the Thorns drew unexpected crowds and also won on the field. Cat Whitehill was the captain and later player-coach of the Boston Breakers -- a carryover club from the WPS -- in the team's first NWSL season. The long-time USWNT defensive stalwart joined Founding Futbol to talk about how her journey to both the USWNT and professional soccer, and how the NWSL finally created the league women's soccer needed. The water-intensive crop is grown for export to Saudi Arabia, raising issues about the sustainability and ethics of using American water resources for foreign benefit. The conversation delves into the broader implications for local communities, U.S. agriculture policies, and potential changes in water regulation in Arizona. California Farm Bureau President, Shannon Douglas talks with Lorrie Boyer about her background, why she is passionate about being a CFB leader and issues discussed at their recent annual meeting.  Sabrina Halvorson interviews Justin Whitehill about the United States Christmas tree industry. They discuss the year-round efforts and dedication required by growers to produce Christmas trees, explaining the lengthy process from planting seeds to reaching the final harvest. Whitehill emphasizes the challenges faced by growers, including unpredictable events like hurricanes and pests, and underscores the environmental benefits of choosing real Christmas trees over artificial ones. He encourages consumers to appreciate and support local Christmas tree growers and to recycle their trees responsibly.

Award-winning book and letterpress artists Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill (former Poet Laureate of Ukiah, CA.) created a multi-genre project, Heavy Lifting, that speaks in poetry, letterpress, and film to the multiple crises of recent years: fires, Covid, Black Lives Matter, housing injustice, and more. Roxi Power talks with these remarkable artists about their "urgent publishing" and how to "lift the fallen" with imagery and words focused on birds. Hundreds of thousands of birds fell from the sky during the fires. The artists carry the burden of memory and accountability in what Whitehill calls "this nervous slice of history." We dive into their trans-genre work, poetry's relationship to letterpress, and their process of countering Covid's isolation through radical collaboration. On August 24, 2-4pm, Rice and Whitehill will bring their Heavy Lifting listening tour to the Felton, CA. public library for the 4th anniversary of California's CZU Lightning Complex Fire. It's a chance to commemorate our losses, including Rice's home and studio. Rice's response to this loss was to collaborate with Whitehill to create a record of these crises as well as ways to survive them, through community and "protest beauty." https://movingpartspress.com/publications/heavy-lifting/ https://theresawhitehill.com/

In this episode, we talk with Tara Todras-Whitehill about becoming a storyteller. She shares how she first became a photographer, and the ethical situations she has found herself in since. Tara describes her current role training NGOs on how to tell stories powerfully and ethically, while explaining the different ethical contexts between journalism and NGO photography. She discusses the importance of going beyond a basic approach to consent, to ensure that the participant is well-informed. Tara also talks about how becoming a mother has altered the way she thinks and acts about photo ethics. What you'll find inside: ‘I quit after four years because I wasn't really getting what I wanted out of it and people thought I was crazy because I was quitting a staff job, and who quits a staff job? And I was like, but this wasn't what I signed up for. So then I went back to doing more in depth storytelling for social impact.' (10.18)‘NGOs vs journalism have very different decisions about what is correct for them. I always take the journalist ethics to the organisations I'm working for, but you always have to figure out how to balance those things because they're working in a different context.' (14.18)‘If you do the down-trodden thing and like woe is me and whatever, they don't come back, because people might donate, but they're not interested in it because it makes them feel bad.' (19.10)‘You want to make sure you're telling the story that's accurate, but you also recognise that they are working within confines. If you're working with the government, there's things that they can't say and how do you tell the story accurately so that your own ethics are being met?' (22.44)‘We are synced for stories, and we are synced for connection.' (26.15)‘As a mother, I also feel like I'm more vulnerable to seeing things - in a good way. The Coin Bureau Podcast: Crypto Without the Hype

The crypto space is evolving from day to day and keeping on top of everything that's going on is a time-consuming job. There's a lot of noise out there and it can often be difficult to trust whether what you're reading is true or not. Credible sources are therefore invaluable. One such source is Cryptoslate, a crypto news, data and opinion platform that is one of the best resources out there for trustworthy information about what's going on in the space. Founded in 2017 and fully independent, Cryptoslate is one of those sites you should have bookmarked in your browser.  Because there's so much going on at the moment, we thought we'd use this episode as an opportunity to take stock and reflect on some of the most turbulent few weeks in crypto's history. And who better to join us than Cryptoslate's founder and CEO, Nate Whitehill?  Nate gives us his perspective on what's been happening recently and tells us about how he came to found Cryptoslate. Sitting down with him was a real pleasure and his views on current events and where we could be headed next are invaluable. We also made him promise to come back again in the future - ideally when the market is looking a lot healthier than it is now. And, if you're finding crypto to be a stressful place to be, Nate's way of letting off steam certainly does sound like fun. We hope you enjoy the show. In 2016, Miry Whitehill answered her friend's call to donate a baby chair to a Syrian family who had just moved to California, only to discover that the family needed so much more. Whitehill made a list of items the family needed in order to get settled and posted it to social media — and soon after, Miry's List was born. Through the nonprofit, Whitehill has been able to help more than 600 families get settled in the U.S. through crowdsourcing and social media. She tells host Giselle Fernandez how she can relate to families she's helped, having grown up in an Orthodox Jewish community and eventually moving to Tel Aviv, where she was a stranger to their customs but welcomed with open arms — and now, she hopes to pay it forward.
