We went deep for our second King Vidor Special Subject episode, looking at four films from the 1930s: Street Scene (1931), adapted by Elmer Rice from his famous stage play about working-class New Yorkers; the little-known Cynara (1932), starring Ronald Colman as a kindly upper-middle-class man who stumbles into adultery and the abyss; Our Daily Bread (1934), Vidor's eccentric, self-produced response to the Great Depression; and Stella Dallas, one of the great woman's pictures, centered on one of Barbara Stanwyck's greatest performances. Class, gender, transformation of consciousness, and how they're served by melodrama story structures all come in for examination as we find links with the films of other auteurs, from Ozu to Lynch. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we take a quick look at monster movie tropes and James Cameron's masochistic feminism in The Terminator. All this and more feedback on our Lilli Palmer series! Send us a Text Message.Grammy winner, Eric Johnson, and Experience Hendrix Tour producer, John McDermott, share their stories about their love of Hendrix's tunes and the upcoming Experience Hendrix Tour. In his interview with Johnson and McDermott, The Trout, learns about how the Experience Hendrix began and the inside story of all the tour comes together. For the first time in five years, The Experience Hendrix Tour, the critically acclaimed multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix's musical genius, returns to the concert trail with a slate of concert dates that offer the musical excellence of numerous topflight artists in celebration of the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. While there was a one-off event date in Austin, TX in 2022, the last full-fledged (pre-pandemic) EH tour took place in 2019. The concept for the Experience Hendrix Tour dates back more than 25 years; what started as a single concert at San Diego's Street Scene in 2001 and 2002 expanded by 2004 into a full-fledged national tour. This year's outing marks the 20th anniversary of the Experience Hendrix Tour. This year's tour bring the music of Jimi Hendrix to audiences in the Pacific Northwest, California, Nevada, Arizona New Mexico and eastward through Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee concluding in Georgia and Florida. Most fittingly, the tour kicks off on September 19 in Seattle, Jimi Hendrix's hometown, at the Paramount Theater.https://www.experiencehendrixtour.com/Support the Show. Thanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

What seeds are we planting to inform the future?...And I said it earlier about making sense out of a chaotic universe where bad things happen to good people. “I do feel that we are infinite choice makers. You make millions of choices all the time. Make the right choice and if you make the wrong choice, understand that mistakes are great teachers. Especially when I think of two things. In terms of history, the humanities show us how we were, why we were, and while we were...But then I also think about the future. What are we doing now? What seeds are we planting to inform the future?...And I said it earlier about making sense out of a chaotic universe where bad things happen to good people. Synopsis On this day in 1947, Pierre Monteux led the San Francisco Symphony in the premiere performance of the Second Symphony by American composer Roger Sessions. Prior to this work, Sessions had written in a more broadly accessible style, but this new symphony proved more dissonant and challenging. At the time, Sessions cautiously stated: “Tonality is complex and even problematical nowadays.” For their part, the San Francisco audiences found the new work both complex AND problematical. There was hardly any applause. Musical America's critic wrote that Sessions (quote): “seemed to express the epitome of all that is worst in the life and thinking of today.” Ouch! Today, the Sessions Second doesn't sound ALL that challenging, but performances of this or any of his symphonies remain rare events. While Sessions' symphony was being panned in San Francisco, a new stage work by the expatriate German composer Kurt Weill opened to rave reviews in New York. Kurt Weill's “Street Scene” opened on Broadway on this same date in 1947. “[It's] the best contemporary musical production to grace any American stage,” enthused the “Musical America” critics. “We cannot imagine that an audience from any walk of life would not enjoy it. It has everything.” Music Played in Today's Program Roger Sessions (1896-1985) — Symphony No. 2 (San Francisco Symphony; Herbert Blomstedt, cond.) The matriarch, Violet, depressed and addicted to pain pills and “truth-telling,” is joined by her three daughters and their problematic lovers, who harbor their own deep secrets, her sister Mattie Fae and her family, well-trained in the Weston family art of cruelty, and finally, the observer of the chaos, the young Cheyenne housekeeper Johnna, who was hired by Beverly just before his disappearance. Holed up in the large family estate in Osage County, Oklahoma, tensions heat up and boil over in the ruthless August heat. Bursting with humor, vivacity, and intelligence, August: Osage County is both dense and funny, vicious and compassionate, enormous and unstoppable.Photos of Penobscot Theatre Company's production of August: Osage County: https://www.facebook.com/penobscotthea trecompany/posts/10153305557141202This episode uses these sounds from freesound.org: "Cartoony Clangs (hit with spade)_2.wav" by Timbre licensed under CCBYNC 3.0******* IN OUR NEXT EPISODE *******Join us as we discuss the 1929 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Street Scene by Elmer L. Producer Samuel Goldwyn wanted to populate his film of Elmer Rice's play Street Scene with a mix of actors from the hit Broadway production and Hollywood. To play the lead Rose, Goldwyn had Nancy Carroll in mind. Signed to Paramount, the studio's managing director Bud Schulberg, would not give Carroll up for the film, instead suggesting Sylvia Sidney for the part. Sidney, also Schulberg's mistress, nonetheless turned out to be inspired casting for the role and anchors the ensemble with her mix of innocence and grit. Along with this 1931 gem, Dan and Vicky delve into some recently seen, including In The Heights, Unhinged, Summer of Soul, Army of the Dead, In Fabric and Memories of Murder. Today’s topic is operetta and opera on Broadway. From the early days of the Great White Way, a large amount of the musical theatre repertoire was actually operetta. I begin with a discussion of the composers of such operettas (Victor Herbert, Rudolf Friml, and Sigmund Romberg, with a significant nod to Jerome Kern as well) and the singers who appeared in those works. Then I present an array of works adapted from the classical repertoire (primarily Wright and Forrest’s Song of Norway and Kismet), followed by examples of that curious hybrid, Broadway opera, including Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium and The Consul; Marc Blitzstein’s Regina; Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella; Kurt Weill and Langston Hughes’s Street Scene; and Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. A wide range of singers is included, some celebrated (Lotte Lenya, Patricia Neway, Barbara Cook, Marta Eggerth, Lawrence Tibbett), some less so (Helena Scott, Lee Venora, Fritzi Scheff, Robert Rounseville), the careers of some of whom stretch back to the beginning of the century, but all singers which straddled the fence between musicals, operetta, and opera. But rest assured: this is no dry history lesson: it’s a fast-paced romp through a fun and fascinating topic! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Hello! I'm Eléonore Duizabo and I'm a little baguette baked and raised in Paris! I'm a musical theatre actress who trained in France and in London. I studied classical music at the Conservatoire in Paris. I performed on tour and then in The Sound of Music and Street Scene at the Théâtre du Châtelet and completely fell in love with musical theatre! I was super determined to go study musical theatre in London. So whilst I was completing a degree in Theatre at the Sorbonne, I joined the International College of Musical Theatre in 2016. And in 2019, I graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with a Masters in Music Theatre! After graduating, I got to shoot a couple of short films, perform in a new musical, Past Midnight, and even gave my voice to a tomato for a Youtube series (true story!) I am also the creator of Baguette on Broadway (@baguetteonbroad), a musical theatre blog with news, portraits, an encyclopedia of musicals and an English to French dictionary of musical theatre terms! Thanks for having me Christiana! Flags flutter on the sea breeze, as walkers make their way along the Boulevard de Verdun. Look closely and you'll spot a girl playing ‘hoop and stick', while a smartly dressed staff member emerges from a nearby hotel. Following the strong diagonal of the boulevard, the Hôtel Royal stands further in the background, a building which still exists today. Fun fact: this leisurely scene was completed in the same year as the Accords de Matignon, the French labour agreement that established the 40-hour workweek and two weeks paid vacation.
