Are we running this country on Blu-Tack and paperclips? We almost had power cuts again this morning and apparently we need to get used to it because this is just the way our winters are going to be from now on.So what happened was that Transpower issued a grid emergency just before 8am warning that we might not have enough electricity to power the country.Reporters were on the radio telling people to delay charging laptops and cell phones and consider turning off unnecessary lights.Lines companies were turning ripple-controlled hot water systems in people's homes.Three things went wrong all at the same time: a gas turbine in Stratford failed to spark, one of Huntly's turbines stopped working properly and the wind dropped which mean the wind farms stopped producing enough power. This is close to a repeat of what happened last year when a bunch of things went wrong all at exactly the same time: some seaweed got stuck in a hydro pump, Huntly couldn't fire up another generator fast enough and the wind dropped.Last year, Megan Woods, the Energy Minister, tried to pretend it was a one-off.But it doesn't look like it is.Transpower has warned that there are another 12 days left between now and early August where power could be at risk if only two big things go wrong. That's almost a quarter of the time. The reason this is happening is because we don't have enough capacity if things go wrong. In the last seven years, both Contact and Mercury shut down some generation capacity: Contact at Otahuhu and Mercury at Southdown. And now we're cutting it fine.Electricity consultant Murray Ellis reckons there isn't enough extra capacity being built to change this.So this is us this winter and next winter and next winter. At this point you're probably wondering what are we going to do about it?Well so am I.  So I called Megan Woods' office to ask if I sent them questions would they answer them in an hour and they said no.So I don't know what we're going to do about it.But neither do they by the looks of things.

It has also evolved many French breeds, such as the Charollais and Berichon. My guest Jonathan Long is the current breed society chairman, and shares the history of this great breed with us.

Who knew we could influence our lamb taste so much! Research for this podcast includes:Foods | Free Full-Text | Odd- and Branched-Chain Fatty Acids in Lamb Meat as Potential Indicators of Fattening Diet Characteristics (mdpi.com)What does lamb taste like? - Chef's Pencil (chefspencil.com)This episode was inspired by this great article written by Bill Williams. His original article is below:Six factors that influence the flavour of lamb before the chef starts work (which you will never know if you buy your lamb from a supermarket!) 1. The breed of the sheep. What are you actually eating? Merino, Corriedale, Border Leicester, Suffolk, Dorset, Ryeland, Southdown, Romney? I guess I must mention Dorper and Damara. LIke different grape varieties, sheep varieties produce different tasting and textured meat. I produce Wiltshire because that's the breed that yields the dining experience I personally like best. They may not be the fastest to reach a marketable weight, but the wait's worth it! Another example of slow food.2. The age of the sheep. When was the last time you saw "old ewe" or even mutton labelled at the supermarket? Not that mutton can't be delicious if prepared correctly, but seriously, if you go to a saleyard more than half the sheep sold usually aren't lambs or even hoggets. Where do they go? My theory is that most of them turn into "lamb" when they leave the abattoir.3. Diet. Are they feedlot finished? Or perhaps they've been raised on improved pasture made up of just one or 2 grass varieties in high rainfall or irrigated grazing areas where the native grasses have been wiped out by broad acre round up applications? In my experience lambs raised on a wide variety of native grasses and shrubs like saltbush taste much sweeter with a less fatty taste. Of course what they have been eating also effects how fat they are, too.4. Water. Water quality and availability are extremely important to sheep health. Consider the difference between sheep that have to walk a long way to a muddy dam compared to sheep grazed in close proximity to a flowing stream of fresh clean water. Good water access also enables sheep to browse and digest roughage more easily.5. Animal husbandry. Have the sheep been dogged? Consider the journey from the paddock to the abattoir.....especially for sheep sold through saleyards. Many supermarket lambs end up affected by adrenaline and fear. I don't like to road transport sheep in summer....it's just too hot most days.6.How long have the carcasses been dry aged before being cut up into kitchen ready cuts? If the carcass is given at least a few days to "set", the muscles relax and the meat matures. Dry aged lamb is much more tender and flavoursome than freshly butchered lamb. What do you think? We would greatly appreciate any comments about which factors you consider most important in determining lamb quality.

Setting your breed objectives – Simon Thomas To set your breeding objectives ask yourself the following question and write down your answers:Question 1: Why breed sheep? Apart from the usual answers like “I enjoy the challenge” or “sheep chose me” you need some underpinning factors. My career as a former stock agent and being an experienced breeder has taught me that there are two key driving factors behind breeding livestock 'profit' and 'tradition'.  The varying degrees of adopting these factors will influence and drive your program. This could be breeding heritage sheep to maintain a breed type and a stable population or breeding sheep to met market demands for example.  Question 2: Where do you sit on this scale? Is the balance between the factors of profit and tradition right in your breeding operation currently? Question 3: What is your perfect description of the sheep you want to breed? My earliest memory of being at a sheep show was being in the viewing tiers at Royal Melbourne Show in the early 1980s watching my father show his Border Leicesters. The wonderful Mrs Peggy Sparrow often sat by my side to watch me.  In between the completion of classes Mrs Sparrow would always strike up a conversation with us kids. These conversations normally would revolve around the results of the show floor, but every now and then Mrs Sparrow would give you a 'gem' piece of advice.  This question comes from Mrs Sparrow, she went on to say “once you have your perfect description, write it down and then set a plan as to how you are going to achieve it and do it multiple times”.  Why is this question so important?  To write your own sheep description is a very personal thing, no two descriptions will be the same.  Each breed has their own standard. These standards are what every breed association set out as the core traits that define their breed. To write down your description take this breed standard further so yours not only meets this standard but it also meets your personal view of the perfect sheep for your operation or market.  Why you are breeding sheep in the first place will impact on the level of depth you delve into when writing your description. When writing a sheep description plan I use an analogy of choosing a vehicle. When buying a vehicle, that vehicle comes with standards features (these are your breeds core traits).  You then have the ability to individualise the standard features to personalise that vehicle to you. For example maybe you would like leather interior, metallic paint (these are your personalised sheep traits).  For example, the Southdown breed description states that the feet should be black, my breed description for this standards are feet must be black.  Then there are the times where a feature of the breed may not be explicitly stated in a breed description but this could be of significant importance to you, for example nose colour, teat placement, temperament and performance traits like growth rate or fertility. Question 4: Do you assess and modify your description as required? It is never to early or late to record a sheep description. Whether you have been breeding sheep for generations or you are still deciding what your first breed of sheep may be, you should regularly assess and modify your description as required.  Assess your sheep against your own statement. You may need to modify it and you may need to modify your breeding program to get there.  Regularly read your associations breed standards, this can help you to clarify your standards.  Associations standards do change so review them regularly.  Today, we have the ability to obtain data and statistics that&

In this episode Charlie interviews Grant Hilliard. Grant has been at the forefront of the paddock to plate scene in Sydney for many years, providing a vital link between curious and passionate 'eaters' in the city with the farmers who are producing regeneratively and ethically grown meat. Charlie and Grant traverse the line between government regulation, consumer sentiment and farming behaviours in exploring the current food system, its short comings and opportunities. Episode Takeaways: Grant operates a wholesale and retail butcher shop in Marrickville, Sydney, selling meat  and cuts of meat not usually seen in butcher shops eg. 3-4 year old beef, sourcing direct from producers | Buying direct from farmers is Feather and Bones point of difference | Grant grew up in suburban Melbourne with little time on farms | At Primary school he did a farm trip for a week to a dairy, and witnessed the slaughter of a sheep for food, which had profound formative effect on him | He was a vegetarian for a couple years whilst living in a remote nature reserve | Grant studied communications in Sydney and was involved in the making of a number of films | Whilst studying he worked as a waiter to pay the bills,  the famous Tony Bilson was one of his first bosses | He was the sommelier at Sean’s Panaroma in Bondi when he visited vineyards that got him interested in the location of food production | Information on the source of food was very scarce back then. He went looking for lamb, and found the rare Southdown breed near Oberon in the Central tablelands of NSW | He sold 3 different lambs to 3 different chefs, which was the beginning of his journey into sourcing good food direct from producers | The wool industry in Australia has pulled the meat sheep industry out of shape, with the wool breed Merino being used to produce most of the lamb available as a cross bred lamb | Grant visits every farm to understand them and provide that special link between farmers, not just between farmers and consumers | Whilst focused on rare breeds initially, Grant also now appreciates genetic diversity and the interconnection of things | Phenotype of an animal ( the influence of its environment such as food available) is just as important as it’s genotype |  Feeding of animals in a restricted environment (such as in feedlots) restricts their ability to source a full profile of nutrients | A diverse diet produced in a diverse landscape produces a diverse nutrient profile in the product | Angus cattle as a breed are highly genetically meddled with | Grant only sells one Angus producer’s beef and it originates from an old closed herd from the US with original Aberdeen Angus type genetics | The breed has been genetically commoditized | The current beef available is a reflection on the convenience for processors with little regard for consumer access to quality produce | One needs less of the meat that Grant sources and it goes further with more variety of cuts and a shorter supply chain creating a more diverse and resilient business model | 3 main challenges the food system in Australia faces incl. incorporating indigenous wisdom into food production, recognizing and accounting for the true cost of food & creating  government policy that recognizes we can't keep farming on a declining fertility plain | Political departmental disparity is challenging the effectiveness of food policy | A super department of health, land, environment & water would help address this! | Grant suggests if farmers are thinking about supplying good meat direct to wholesalers they need to consider their distance from processors and the overall logistics, and the quality of the water supplied to their livestock | Grant’s message of hope is that land can be rehabilitated and there is plenty if evidence of that happening at a rate faster than anticipated under the appropriate regenerative management. Episode Links :  Grant Hilliard -  Sydney Morning Herald article  Feather and Bone - 8/10-14 Lilian Fowler Place, Marrickville, Sydney, NSW 2204 The Ethical Omnivore - Grant Hilliard’s book  From the Feather & Bone website ‘The Ethical Omnivore is a user-friendly recipe and handbook that will open your eyes to a better way to buy, cook and eat.  this book to answer the questions we're asked every day in our butchery and it's an unapologetic paean of praise for regenerative agriculture and the importance of community.  We live in an affluent era marked by an increasingly fraught relationship to food, and meat is arguably the most controversial ingredient. There is a communal ache for authenticity, for a way forward with good conscience. Our book explores the solution: living with a conscience; asking the right questions of whomever sells you meat or of the labels you read; and learning how to respect the animal so much that you're willing to cook something other than chicken breast. We hope that it shows all of us how to live with less impact on the animals and environment that support us. Seans Panorama  - Restaurateur Sean Moran Phion water device - NSW, Aus

I am very blessed to have had so many guests of the Off-Farm Income Podcast go on to success at very high levels.  Jaleigh Oldenburg, who originally appeared on episode #689, found herself as an American Star Farmer Finalist this year!  That is an incredible accomplishment, and JaLeigh certainly deserved to be there. Not only has JaLeigh developed a great business with her own flock of Southdown Sheep, but she teaches others how to show by putting on clinics.  It is easy to see how she rose to the top with this project, and why she can always call herself an American Star Finalist! INTRODUCING JALEIGH OLDENBURG! I get to speak with another student who is a result of the Mulhall-Orlando FFA Chapter today, and I have to say that I am impressed with this chapter and the students that I have spoke with from here. On this episode I am speaking with Jaleigh Oldenburg.  Jaleigh is now attending Northern Oklahoma College and studying agricultural science.  She has been working with sheep since she can remember, and she has really developed a love for working with these livestock. Today Jaleigh has her own flock of Southdown sheep with about 200 head to her name.  She is busy raising her sheep and putting on showing clinics when she is not at college. All of her efforts have led her to some pretty significant recognition.  Jaleigh was an Oklahoma State Proficiency winner in sheep production in 2018, and she was also selected as the Oklahoma State Star Farmer in the same year.  The following fall Jaleigh was a national proficiency winner in sheep production at the National FFA Convention. Jaleigh is a student to watch, and she is having great success! REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. At her first race she didn’t even own a backpack so carried kit in a designer tote bag! But each time she survived a day in the cold, it made her want to test more boundaries.  Helen, started road cycling, open water swimming and then triathlons. For two years she filled almost every weekend with a new endurance challenge - She did a 112 mile cycle through the Peak District, a 5km ocean swim between two islands in Greece, and spend two days of fell running in Isle of Wight. Two years later, she qualified for the age-group World Champs triathlon and got to go to Chicago and compete in GB kit. In her book she talks about how outdoor sport changed her life and outlook. Not only has it made her physically stronger but it also made her mentally tough, calmer and more patient. She stopped being a slave to glamour and feminine ideals, and made her appreciate what a beautiful country we live in and introduced her to a whole new wholesome social scene.  Her goals is to inspires more women to get into sport and she’s passionate about getting women to discover their adventurous side. Hello there and welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast and the show notes for Episode 29 – All the dubs.   In this episode I cover: Global Hook Up; Final Destination; En Route; Feeding the habit; Quick News Beats and J’adore?   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon: 1 – Different Designer CAL – Thank you to everyone that took part in the CAL.  As you know, I pulled for prizes live on the podcast.  Emma wanted the skein of yarn and Caroline wanted the bag – perfect!     There are lots of lovely projects in both the Ravelry FO thread and under #DifferentDesignerCAL on Instagram.   Many thanks to Gilly at Fjord Fibres for offering up some fabulous prizes!     2 – Final Destination It has been a bit of an odd month really.  I have been really busy but haven’t managed a scrap of personal crocheting!  I did, however, finish my copper Loft crocheted (3mm straight hook) and knitted (3mm circular needles) shawls (both use John Arbon Knit by Numbers Copper colours in 4 ply 100g/400m).     I have also finished my fourth (!) pair of Mini Mania socks and have another two pairs to make!  I love the pattern and how they look but really, I could do without making a further two pairs!  All pairs are made using RiverKnits mini skeins (British Bluefaced Leicester and 2.25mm circular needles).  I am working on an extension of the pattern to show how you can knit two pairs of socks from 7 x 20g skeins.     My biggest FO of all was my stand for Wonderwool Wales.  It takes a lot of effort to create a stand at a show and I was really chuffed with how it turned out.  I know what I want to improve on for the next show (Wool@J13 – I’m on stand 33) and next year’s Wonderwool Wales (if I get in).       3 – En Route I haven’t made any progress on my Stoborough shawl by Sarah Hazell so won’t show it off again until I have. The two ongoing projects that I showed were vanilla socks for Matthew using Fjord Fibres sock yarn (100g/350m and using a 2.5mm circular needle).  The main colour is called Night Storm and the contrast colour is Boreal Forest.  I love this yarn. Warm. Bouncy. Quality. Even. Beautiful.      The second is my second version of Loft Knitted which is in the grape colourways from the Knit By Numbers range 4 ply 100g/400m using a 3mm circular needle)       4 - Feeding the habit  What I am showing you below is a mixture of things I have bought and lovely things that were given to me.         1 - Southdown fibre from Adelaide Walker 2 - 'Wood' which is a collaboration between RiverKnits and BabyLongLegs 3 - Poll Dorset from the Kennixton Flock (thanks Caroline) 4 - Twool - twine made in Devon and spun by John Arbon (thanks again Caroline). 5 - Mini skeins from RiverKnits 6 - New badge pin from Claudia at CrochetLuna (if you wanted one of these and live in UK/EU they will soon be available from me at KNIT IT - HOOK IT - CRAFT IT) 7 - My bag swap bag from Claudia - my idiot cat was found attacking it this morning.  He does not share my love of all things cacti...   5 - Quick News Beats Global Hook Up – The next Global Hook Up is due to be on Saturday 5th May 2018.  Time: Saturday 5th May 2018 8:00 PM London Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/4750475819  The meeting ID number is 475-047-5819 and you will need to join via Zoom which you can do here:  https://www.zoom.us/join Dyeing with daffs - Depending on what part of the globe you are in, you may have daffodils that are or have just gone over.  The heads can make the most amazing, colourfast natural dye.  I aim to get twice the weight of flower heads to yarn to dry out so that I can use them when I am ready.  That ratio gives quite an intense mustard/ochre yellow so you could try 50:50 if you wanted a more subtle colour.      6 – J’adore Here is what I am currently loving: Woolly Wool Festivals – the next one that I am attending is Woolfest in Cumbria on the 22nd and 23rd June 2018.  There is something lovely about hearing sheep in the background as you walk around purchasing wool.   On the way back, I had 90's dance music blasting out of the van radio with this amazing sunset keeping me company. It was a good journey home, marking the end of a great weekend.     See you all in June when hopefully I will have had some decent crafting time out in my garden.   Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite

In this episode I'm speaking to Margaret Ritchie MP - Member of Parliament for South Down in Northern Ireland, and a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee. In the previous episode I'd said I would be publishing a second SOS NI podcast, which shared the stories of the staff and volunteers, and the organisations they support, but it's taking me longer to piece together than I'd hoped, and because I've been recording other interviews at the same time I didn't want to delay getting them published any longer. So that’s why you'll be listening to an interview with Margaret Ritchie instead of the SOS NI crew, and there might be one or two more published ahead of that episode, but I will hopefully have it sorted in a few weeks time. So the background to this interview - I contacted Margaret after reading her conversation on Twitter with the organisation Feedback - telling about a grocer who had been told by a local official that he couldn't sell cosmetically imperfect produce. Margaret sits on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee which is currently investigating the issue of food waste, and will be reporting on it later in the year. I will put links in the show notes to the recordings of representatives of the supermarkets and others giving testimony to the committee. It's a brief interview, which took place in a busy café for MPs in the heart of the Houses of Parliament, and explores the work of the committee as well as what lies ahead, and the potential for new legislation. Raymond McArdle (@mcardle_23) is Head Chef at Restaurant 23 and winner of the Great British Menu 2013. Growing up on the South Down coast he fell in love with food due to his grandmother baking a variety of breads from stone milled flour. He decided to become a chef taking what he learnt as a child and building upon it using earthy and delicate flavours to create modern Irish food. He learnt his trade with Paul Rankin and Michael Deane, the only two chefs at the time to have Michelin stars for 9 years. McArdle moved to the Nuremore Hotel as Head Chef and achieved three AA Rosette’s and Best Hotel in Ulster numerous times. Moving home to the coast was in his heart, he missed the rugged coastline and ‘where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’! He wanted a simpler life creating his ideal food.

This episode is full of yummy snacks and traditional Indonesian games. And don't forget, a plethora of methods for joining a new ball of yarn. I am using a new mic, I hope it improves the audio quality of the show! On The Needles (01:01) Low tide cardigan. Gobi mittens. Finally decided to frog Arden and cast on for Gobi instead, making it fingerless mitts instead of mittens. Whirligeek (02:59) Finished plying half Southdown. Decided to do a 2-ply. How I finish the yarn: soak it with mild shampoo in hot water, rinse with cold water, thwack on my bathroom floor, and hang to dry. Smells very sheepy. Ordered a one yard niddy noddy from hilltopcloud on etsy. Need to fashion a homemade lazy kate. Sp far I have been using a box padded with foam and just let my spindle roll freely there while I make a plying ball, but it's too much hassle. If you are a spinner, you belong to 0.7% of the Ravelry community... According to a post in the Spinner Central board on Rav. I thought I am just practically, positively surrounded by spinners, but apparently it's just me adhering to the saying "birds of a feather flock together", even subconsciously. Before I started spindle spinning I don't notice that many spinners around me (virtually, that is) but leading to the moment where I fell and joined the bandwagon, spinning gathered momentum and I keep hearing, seeing, reading anout spinning! Eventhough I wasn't consciously looking for spinning-related stuff. So I guess it's inevitable serendipity? Or kismet? Into The Blue (06:56) This is a new segment where I talk a little bit more in depth and technical. Knitting is such an evolving, ever-improving skill set. I never stop learning, and with every new stuff I learn, I reali

Hello from a distinctly un-summery Cheshire Plain. It's a bumper one this time around! This episode I share some finished objects, give you a history lesson and subject you all to my ramblings and reminicences on livestock. On the needles/wheel: I've finished the Manos del Uruguay Clapotis in time for the Clap-o-tea party at UK Knit Camp. I've also taught myself how to navajo ply on the singles I spun from a hank of unidentified fibre (possibly BFL and tencel) I bought from DT Crafts at Wonderwool Wales. No photos here, I'm afraid, but details on Ravelry for the Clapotis and the handspun. I'm also having a blast spinning some Muppet batts from EverImprovingMe. Gorgeous!!! Something I really like: Open Country on BBC Radio 4, particularly using the iPlayer. The Fair Isle Kntting programme is here. Upcoming Events: UK Knit Camp, 9th-13th August and UK Ravelry Weekend, 13th-14th August, Stirling, Scotland; I Knit Weekender, 10th-11th September, London; Fibre Flurry, 30th October, King's Norton, Birmingham. The bulk of this episode is taken up with information about The Oxfordshire County and Thame Show. It's something I attended every year as a child and teenager, but haven't been sinc ei went into teachign in the mid-90s. So, ready for the photo fest that is my record of Thame Show? OK, don't say I didn't warn you. There's a lot of photos. Seriously. Heaps. First up, the patchwork class. The red certificate is for First prize, blue is Second, yellow is Third, white is Very Highly Commended. The first prize winner in the patchwork is the first piece completed by the entrant. Then it's the fibre classes. First knitting...   ... then baby and toddler knitting... ... then the single entry in the Crochet class. Then I wondered down the other end of the marquee to the vegetables. Later I went into the rabbit tent....   ... the pigeons.... ... and the caged birds. Onto the larger animals. This class appears to be for a South Devon bull, heifer and calf. Inside the tent were some beautiful livestock, including this Hereford heifer... and some Holsteins. Outside you can see some Jacob sheep in the pens on the left. Lookee! A livestock Judge, In a Bowler hat! A shot from the sheep judging ring. A Southdown with a fleecy face. Beautiful Alpaca! One of my favourite parts was the Sheep Show. Here's the lorry, with all nine sheep on show. Close up shots... Craig shearing his first ever Scottish Blackface. Some of the Sheep show participants. First Lenny the Lincoln Longwool... ...the Rupert the Rouge De L'Ouest from France... ... and finally Dougal the Scottish Blackface. Music: Rondopolska by Barry Philips, from the album Tråd, available from Magnatune. The wonderful fluffy sheep is one of the breeds I talk about in today's spin in podcast, the Polworth.  I also discuss the Southdown sheep breed. I've put in a small segment for beginner spinners on just how I fiddle with my spinning wheel when starting to spin a new to me fiber. And if it is a spin-in then there must be a story, and today's yarnspinnertale is about sense of humor. Here's the promised links! Here's a good link for more information about the Polworth sheep. I have a group on Ravelry, listed as yarnspinnerstales spin-in.  Search in the groups box and come join the group. I have a fiber sampler box of 10 different fibers for sale in my Artfire store, ZavagantStudio.  Check it out now and then, I will continue to add items for sale there over the next two months. All music is from Mevio's Music Alley (formerly the Podsafe Music Network). Today's theme:  Humor! The first song is by Marc Gunn, a podcaster of Celtic Music (The Celtic Music Podcast Show) and writer of very funny songs, often about cats.  Today I chose What Do You Do With a Catnipped Kitty. The very unique 'singing' of the Miranda Rights is called the Miranda Lullabye, and is sung by Paul and Storm. The show closes with The Recycle Song by Bill Bates. As always, a big thank you to Wren Ross for Baa Baa Black Sheep and Clare Dowling for Spinning Wheel. Happy Spinning!
