Ellie is a textile artist working from her garden studio in Brighton. Surrounded by the South Downs, Sussex coastline and wild plants discovered on walks, she draws inspiration from colours, contours and the ever-changing atmosphere of the natural world. Ellie's artworks reflect this connection, blending abstract painting with delicate textile techniques to create pieces that evoke a sense of place and season. Our Writers' salon on the theme of libraries explores characters as diverse as saints, memories, universities, the necessity of writing novels, dystopian visions of the future and seed banks. We chose the theme of Libraries because at a time of book burning and censorship the Library remains a place of freedom of thought and expression. Our first reading is 'Members of Dead Libraries' written by Declan Geraghty. He is a working class writer and poet from Dublin. He's had poetry published in Shanghai Poetry Lab, Epoque Press, Militant Thistles, Cry of the Poor and the Brown Envelope Book. His latest short story featured in Lumpen London issue 11. He has won a mentorship with Words Ireland, and their national mentoring program for new writers. He's recently won a scholarship place with The Stinging Fly Play It Forward Programme, and been awarded a mentorship with Skylight 47. The story is read by Simon Roberts. Our next reading 'All Saints' is by Lindsay Gillespie. Lindsay was born in South Wales, and lives in the South Downs. In between she has been a graphic designer and illustrator, lived in New Delhi, Washington DC, France and taught English in Tokyo. In 2018-2019, she was enrolled in the Creative Writing Programme of New Writing South. She writes short and not-so-short stories and was a Costa 2021 Short Story Award finalist. A year later, she was a finalist for the Bridport Short Story Prize. Finally, founder and co-host of the Story Radio Podcast, Tabitha Potts is a short story writer and novelist, and has been published in various literary magazines and anthologies. She received an Honourable Mention in the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize for her story Poppet and is publishing her debut novel in 2026 with Rowan Prose Publishing. Joining me as my guests for this episode are Elin Heron and Callum James. Elin is returning to Some Other Sphere, having first been interviewed by me in the very early days of the podcast. She is a writer and musician, a talented tarot reader and a speaker of Welsh. Callum is a poet, artist, bookseller and magical practitioner. Both have long been close friends and 2024 saw them each publish new works - Jude by Elin, which is her debut novel and The South Downs: Paths of the Dead by Callum, which details his experience of completing the South Downs Way, an ancient walking route in Southern England. In Jude, Fifteen-year-old Nick has just finished his GSCEs and is stuck at home in the seaside village of Brexenham. What starts as a boring summer quickly transforms, as he meets Jude Fletcher, a wild and otherworldly boy. Nick is pulled into another world, but the disappearance of local girl, Jemma Cox, hangs over the community, and is something that runs farther back than anybody realises. The South Downs is partly a grimoire of the walk Callum undertook, partly a linear topography, and partly a treatise on necromancy. It recognises the folklore, spirits, and the magic of a place and Callum writes as one who does this magic, speaks to these spirits, and follows this lore. In the interview I talk with Elin and Callum about their writing and their friendship, how the ideas for their recent publications came about and how their approach to writing them developed. This leads into a wide-ranging discussion, covering themes such as the role of the imagination and imaginal thinking in otherworldly encounters, the connections between the dead and the landscape, and the nature of otherworldly entities such as The Green Man, a character who features prominently in Jude. I also get to share a couple of my own unusual experiences with them as part of our conversation. In 2018-2019, she was enrolled in the Creative Writing Programme of New Writing South. She writes short and not-so-short stories and was a Costa 2021 Short Story Award finalist. A year later, she was a finalist for the Bridport Short Story Prize. Other short stories have been shortlisted in nine competitions in recent years including Fiction Factory, Exeter, Oxford Flash Fiction, Fiction Factory Flash, Rhys Davies, Frome, ChipLit, Edinburgh and Fish.   Our next reader is Dr Stuart Gillespie, a non-fiction writer who's also new to Story Radio. He has four decades of experience in nutrition and development since his first position as nutrition coordinator in a rural development project in southern India in the early 80s. His book Food Fight tells the tale of how the food system we once relied upon for global nutrition has warped into the very thing making us sick. It will be published by Canongate in 2025. Martin Nathan's short fiction and poetry have appeared in various journals. His novel A Place of Safety is published by Salt Publishing. His dramatic writing has been shortlisted for the Nick Darke Award and the Woodward International Prize. Martin will be reading from a new short story. In 2023 they made the decision to try something new. In July of 2023 they finally moved to a house in a small village in the Dordogne region of France.The time and solitude afforded to him by the lockdown restrictions led to a fulfilment to write a piece of fiction in 2022. A second novel is now complete and is currently awaiting publication in early 2024. Guy has changed genre and written a historical fiction piece set during the first half of the 20th century.Guy's interests are many and varied. He played hockey for many years for the Police and then for Crowborough Hockey club, where he met his wife. Guy enjoys the outdoors, particularly walking great distances across the South Downs and now along the many French footpaths of his region. He collects GB, US and Olympic stamps and Scottish Malt whisky. He is a keen motorcyclist, having recently passed his Advanced motorcyclist qualification. He is looking forward to tearing around the highways and byways of Europe, hopefully with Paula clinging on too. Guy has more work in the pipeline. Juliet Robinson is on the podcast today and we're chatting about bringing movement into every lesson and including ensembles in recitals.Trained as a classroom music specialist having gained a 1st Class Honours degree from Trinity College of music and a PGCE at Kingston Polytechnic. Spent over 30 years then teaching in the Midhurst area in the middle of the South Downs, first as an upper secondary teacher, then as an Intermediate school teacher gaining AST (Advanced Skills Teacher) status which gave me the opportunity to support teachers in primary schools. I then worked as a primary music specialist for 10 years working in several schools. On my retirement I then started up a private music business from home, teaching children to be musicians through the piano. When author Annabel Abbs suffered a series of bereavements she found herself unable to sleep. Eventually she began getting up and walking around her garden and neighbouring fields around 3am. But when she heard about Caroline Whiteman who runs guided walks at night without head torches, she just had to go along on one. Caroline began the walks as an experiment in overcoming her fear of the dark. She has found other people keen to get out at night and experience the dark in a totally different way under her care and supervision. He tells them the couple discussed giving the baby up, but the following morning she had died, and even though he tried to give her CPR, it didn't work. He told them when Victoria died it was every parents worst dread. Clare joins PE Teacher Julie Ford for a bracing walk on the Seven Sisters near Eastbourne. It's a walk with a difference. Following a brush with breast cancer Julie was keen to keep fit but no longer wanted to go to the gym. As a passionate walker she was getting good exercise but needed to maintain her upper body strength. So through a process of trial and error Julie has created a way of walking with resistance bands. She takes Clare on a walk on the South Downs on a beautiful sunny Winter's day to show her how to tone her arms while she walks as well as to appreciate health and fitness in the outdoors.Producer: Maggie Ayre

In this episode, Caroline and Jack bring you the dramatic bodycam footage of the moment Constance Marten and Mark Gordon are finally arrested after weeks on the run. In the footage both are asked repeatedly where the baby is, but neither give an answer. The episode also outlines the evidence from a woman who says she was awoken on two consecutive nights in her house on the edge of the South Downs by the sound of a baby crying. A few days later, she said that she saw a couple resembling Mark Gordon and Constance Marten on a coastal path near her home, as well as a blue tent nearby. This episode will also feature evidence from a man whose wife gave evidence last week about an alleged sighting of Constance Marten carrying a dead child. He told the court that he and his wife returned to the park where she made the sighting so that they could carry out their own detective work. The jury were also shown CCTV of the moment Constance Marten bought some petrol from a Texaco garage on January 12 2023 - which she later told police that she had intended to use to cremate the remains of Baby Victoria. She has spent her life hiking, trail running, fishing, foraging, and farming; she aspires to increase her own knowledge and awareness of traditional Appalachian folk medicine, music, and skills as in an effort to live harmoniously with the mountains around her. With a degree in Ecology, Aly focuses on seasonal changes, flora, and fauna while hiking the Appalachian Trail. David Firari David “Good Soup” is excited to be sharing their northbound Appalachian Trail with you! This is their first ever backpacking trip and they hope all the reading and shakedown hikes they did pay off. In addition to being a novice backpacker, Good Soup is also managing a schedule of recurring medical treatments back home in Wisconsin in order to make this trip happen. Derek Witteman Derek is a 37 years young Northern California native, presently thriving in San Antonio, Texas. In no particular order he is a physician, veteran, hiker, nerd, and jokester. In his free time he enjoys taking selfies with wildlife, and thinking of spirit animals the represent his current mood. Eddie Arriola Eddie is a travel PTA, physical therapist assistant, who's been dreaming of the PCT for four years. In his spare time he enjoys photography, karaoke, and has other eclectic hobbies. He's originally from southern Arizona, Tucson, and is excited to get back to his primary partner and dogs after the trail. Elke Pabst Elke comes from Germany and wants to thruhike the AT with her dog Tilli. It is her first stay in the USA und doesn t hiking before. In addition to being a novice backpacker, Good Soup is also managing a schedule of recurring medical treatments back home in Wisconsin in order to make this trip happen. Derek Witteman Derek is a 37 years young Northern California native, presently thriving in San Antonio, Texas. In no particular order he is a physician, veteran, hiker, nerd, and jokester. In his free time he enjoys taking selfies with wildlife, and thinking of spirit animals the represent his current mood. Eddie Arriola Eddie is a travel PTA, physical therapist assistant, who's been dreaming of the PCT for four years. In his spare time he enjoys photography, karaoke, and has other eclectic hobbies. He's originally from southern Arizona, Tucson, and is excited to get back to his primary partner and dogs after the trail. Elke Pabst Elke comes from Germany and wants to thruhike the AT with her dog Tilli. It is her first stay in the USA und doesn t hiking before. She has 3 nearly grown up sons and a husband who take care of everything while she is hiking with her 9 year old dog Tilli. Jake Landgraf Jake is currently on the AT attempting his first thru-hike. A proud Wisconsin resident, he enjoys beer, the outdoors, and the Green Bay Packers. On trail, Jake is known as “Radioface” and is obsessed with cosmic brownies. While it's certainly shaping up to be an interesting year for the PCT, she's excited to see whatever the trail has in store. Though many of us eat more so out of pleasure, schedule, routine or the like, a hiker's relationship to food evolves during the course of a thru-hike and it's an interesting change to take note of. Wherever you fall in the dietary spectrum it's somewhat unlikely that you will have the same relationship with food pre and post trail.  Food is important and it becomes a vital part of your hiking strategy out of necessity, which is obvious on its face: you need to eat, but when your white hot furnace of a metabolism is glowing for 8, 10, or 12 hours a day, the importance of eating takes on a new form.  So, let's hear what our correspondents have to report about what role food has played for them on their hikes. Welcome back to Trail Correspondents! Today we're talking about the physical adjustment our correspondents have endured on trail.  When it comes to staying on trail, you have to listen to your body. You ignore its cries and protests at your peril. If there's one piece of advice I can give with respect to acclimating to the physical demands of thru hiking, it's to tend to things THE MOMENT they arise. If you feel a small itch on the back of your heel, pull over and investigate. If your cookset is digging into your back, take your pack off and reorient it, and so on.  With the attrition rate of any thru hike being what it is, anything you can do to stop problems before they arise will incrementally increase your odds of arriving at your intended terminus.
