From Jackie to Jr. to Judge, Black Baseball is 🔥. The Black Baseball Mixtape highlights Black baseball at every level. BBM blends baseball and hip-hop culture to create a unique show that is entertaining to all.
The Black Baseball Mixtape podcast is a refreshing and much-needed addition to the world of baseball podcasts. As a black baseball fan, I am thrilled to have a podcast that covers the sport from a black perspective. The host, Cheats, and the entire BBM family bring a unique and insightful take on the game that is not often heard in mainstream media. It's clear that Cheats has a genuine love for baseball, and it shines through in every episode.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the panel discussions. The "Fantastic Four" panel on the MLB playoffs was engaging and provided diverse perspectives on the games. The guests on this podcast are also top-notch, with Marc highlighting the best players from past, present, and future to discuss their experiences in baseball. This podcast does an excellent job of building a community across generations and increasing awareness of black baseball culture.
Another great aspect of The Black Baseball Mixtape is its promotion of players' voices. Cheats creates a warm and relaxed environment for his guests to open up and share their baseball journey. The interviews are thought-provoking and provide insights into both the game itself and its impact on black culture. This podcast truly empowers players' voices in a way that few others do.
While there aren't many negative aspects to this podcast, one thing could be improved is the frequency of episodes being produced. As someone who loves listening to it, I find myself eagerly awaiting each new episode. It would be great if The Black Baseball Mixtape could be released more frequently to satisfy my appetite for engaging baseball content.
In conclusion, The Black Baseball Mixtape podcast is an absolute gem for any baseball fan looking for an enjoyable and enlightening experience. From its unique perspective on black culture within baseball to its promotion of player voices, this podcast stands out among other sports podcasts in terms of quality and relevance. It has reinvigorated my love for the game and has become a must-listen for me. I highly recommend giving it a listen, regardless of your background or knowledge of baseball.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.20.2026): The Mets have dropped 11 in a row. The Phillies are off to their worst start since 2015. Judge and Rice are making home run history in the Bronx. Shohei keeps getting on base. Mason Miller cannot be hit, really. And, the Seattle Steelheads got a win at home—all of that and more on your daily dose of Black baseball news and highlights. Finish Your Breakfast.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.19.2026): The Padres are set to get new leadership, and with that leadership, history will be made. If the Padres sell to José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones, Feliciano will join the Angels' Arte Moreno as the second Latino majority owner of an MLB franchise, and Jones will be the first African-American woman to be majority owner of an MLB franchise. $3.9 billion is a lot of money, but oftentimes, minorities have to overpay to break the good old network that has excluded our community for far too long. I will be watching these developments closely.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.18.2026): RIP to Angels legend Garret Anderson. On Friday night, the Braves' Dom Smith and Mike Harris hit homers in a win. The Nationals'' Daylen Lile and James Wood hit home runs in a loss. The Cards Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn help their club beat the Astros. And Jeremiah Jackson is going on his way to joining Jo Adell in the FYB HOF. All of that AND the Black Baseball Mixtape Substack is number #98 in rising sports!

Finish Your Breakfast (4.17.2026): Trout and Judge finished their epic series in the Bronx. I believe the final count was 22 home runs between the Yankees and Angels in four games. Trout had 5 HR and 9 RBIs. Judge had 4 HRs and 5 RBIs. Jo Adell hit the big one yesterday, a grand slam in the eight inning. Angels won the game and tied the series. And, Jo Adell's three-home run-robbing glove is going to Cooperstown. All of that and more on FYB.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.16.2026): A celebration of the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson. A full slate of games, and they did not disappoint. We had walk-offs in the Bronx and San Diego. Mike Trout and Aaron Judge are putting on a show. Jeremiah Jackson (O's) and Drake Baldwin (Braves) are staying hot. And much more on this episode of FYB. Your daily dose of Black baseball news and highlights.

Happy Jackie Robinson Day! There is a lot to cover this morning, and we have to start with the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The top-ranked team in the SWAC has once again pulled a mid-week miracle, upsetting #20 Florida in Gainesville. I can't remember the last time an HBCU baseball team upset two ranked SEC teams in the same season. Congrats to BCU. I have to give love to the UCLA Bruins. The #1 team in the country debuted their Jackie Robinson uniforms last night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. They put their 27-game win streak on the line and were upset by UCSB 4-0. A tough loss for the Bruins. All of that, and the Black baseball highlights from last night's MLB action. Finish your Breakfast.

Last week, MLB released new diversity data. The data tells an evolving story, one that can foster confidence in future growth. The data showed 64 American-Born Black players out of 948 players on the ‘26 active rosters and injured list. That is 6.8%. That percentage is an increase from 2024 to 2025. The increase is the first consecutive two-year increase in 20 years. Why is this happening? Why is this happening now? I believe the combination of top-level grassroots activism, in partnership with MLB programs, has unlocked participation, targeted identification, and training to help our young people succeed at the highest levels. There is no single answer, but a combination of factors.

There is no other way to say it, Mixtape family showed out on Monday. Judge and Grisham hit two home runs for the Yankees. They beat the Angels 11-10. Jeremiah Jackson hit two home runs in the O's come-from-behind victory against the DBacks. Josh Naylor hit two home runs (5 RBIs) in the Mariners' win over the Astros. Lawrence Butler saved a home run, then hit one against the Rangers. CJ Abrams took Paul Skense over the wall. And Byron Buxton became the all-time home run leader at Target Field. All of that and more on this episode of FYB.

On this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, the crew discusses MLB parity, new City Connect jerseys, and key early-season call-ups. Cheats ask the crew, who would you rather have for the next five years: Xavier Edwards or Chandler Simpson, and the emergence of Jordan Walker is analyzed. All of that and more on this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast. The Black Baseball Mixtape is in partnership with the Players Alliance, Minority Prospects, and Numbers Game (Scorebooks). Finish Your Breakfast (4.13.2026): Jordan Walker is on FIRE. He hit his MLB-leading seventh home run yesterday. The Cards lost to the Sox 9-3. Dom Smith hit his third homer of the season. The Braves beat the Guardians on Sunday night baseball, 13-1. The Nationals swept the Brewers over the weekend. James Wood homered in the Nats 8-6 win. The American League is pretty even across the board. The best records in the AL are 9-7 (Twins and Guardians), and the worst records are 6-10 (Astros and White Sox); only a three-game difference. Speaking of the Twins, Taj Bradley has been amazing this season. Last night he got his third win of the season. Twins beat the Jays 8-2. Congrats to Rays prospect Xavier Isaac; first home run since returning from brain surgery last November.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.12.2026): Jordan Walker, James Wood, Josh Bell, and Jeremiah Jackson all made some noise last night. The Astros and Mariners played a Mixtape Classic with Taylor Trammell, Cam Smith, and JP Crawford all making big plays. Crawford walked it off. Taijuan Walker got his first win of the season, and Justin Crawford continues to contribute to the Phillies—all of that and more on today's FYB.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.11.2026): A full slate of MLB games on Friday night. The Dodgers are the first team to 10 wins. Max Muncy had a night: 3 HRs and a walk off. Acuna, Harris, and Baldwin came up BIG in ATL. So did Crawford and Randy in Seattle. CJ Abrams and James Wood powered DC over Milwaukee. And there were some rough starts by Chase Burns and Kumar Rocker. All of that, and more on Finish Your Breakfast. Your daily dose of Black baseball news and highlights.

New City Connect Uniforms (and hats) are out. The Braves, O's, Pirates, Reds, Royals, Padres, Rangers, and Brewers, all got a new wave of CC gear. Let me know what you think. The Black Baseball Mixtape just reached 100 subscribers on Substack. Thank you for your continued support.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.9.2026): Mo'ne Davis, now of the Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL), has signed a contract to enter Banana Land, pitching for the Indianapolis Clowns. She is scheduled to play in the Banana Ball league starting on April 11. This is a perfect fit for the Clowns and coach Eric Fox. The Clowns enter Banana Land carrying the legacy of the Negro League team that was once home to Hank Aaron, Toni Stone, and Connie Morgan, just to name a few. All of that, and your daily MLB highlights on FYB. #ripdaveylopes

Finish Your Breakfast (4.8.2026): There was a lot that happened in the MLB last night, but I'm starting with a midweek upset in the NCAA. Congrats to HBCU Bethune-Cookman for knocking off #24 LSU. The Wildcats are in first place in the SWAC with a 23-10 record. This win marks their first against a ranked opponent since 2017. The LSU Tigers are the defending National Champions, but have struggled early in the powerful SEC. They are 6-6 in conference and 22-12 overall. Switching to MLB: James Wood and Jordan Walker hit homers last night. The Yankees beat the A's dramatically. The Blue Jays have lost six games in a row. Oh yeah, and there was a brawl in LA.

After 18 months, baseball returned to Tropicana Field in Tampa. Cedric Mullins and Junior Caminero hit home runs. Chandler Simpson flashed some leather in the Rays' 6-4 win. The Braves' Drake Baldwin has been on FIRE. His home run in the first inning ties the MLB league lead. Is Baldwin this year's Cal Raleigh? Jo Adell hit his first homer of the season, and Jose Soriano pitched a gem (8 IP, 10Ks) in the Angels' 6-2 win. A wild one in DC, James Wood and CJ Abrams hit homers for the Nats. Jordan Walker hit a homer for the Cards. The Nats win the slugfest 9-6. Not mentioned in the highlights, the Dodgers embarrassed the Blue Jays in the first game of the '25 World Series rematch. Shohei hit his third homer in as many days, and the Dodgers used Miguel Rojas to pitch the 9th (SMH). The Jays have lost five in a row.

On this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, Cheats, Flobo, April, and Malik talk about teams that have overachieved and underachieved in the early weeks of the baseball season. Flobo deep dives into the emerging White Sox. April asks us which closer has the best sequence from the bullpen to the mound, and Malik highlights the Black-American players in the game putting in crazy work (Jo Adell, CJ Abrams, Drake Baldwin, Taj Bradley, and more). The Black Baseball Mixtape is in partnership with the Players Alliance, Number Games Scorebooks, and Minority Prospects. Please visit the website of all of our wonderful partners.

Finish Your Breakfast (4.6.2026): A full slate of games in MLB on Easter Sunday. Every team played, and the Cubs and Guardians played two (S/O to Ernie Banks). James Wood (Nats) hit his second homer of the season, but the Nats could not avoid the sweep by the Dodgers. Mookie Betts was placed on the IL with a strained oblique. The Braves' Drake Baldwin had a day: 3-5, 4 RBIs, 1 HR, but the Braves lost to the Diamondbacks 6-5, and split the four-game series. Marcus Semien and Devin Williams helped lead the Mets over the Giants 5-2. Jo Adell did what he does best (not home run robberies): he knocked in a run to tie the game against the Mariners. Angels won 8-7. All of those highlights, and more, on your daily dose of Black baseball news and highlights.

Finish Your (Easter) Brunch (4.5.2026): Yes, I took the morning off and attended Sunday service with the family, but I'm still here with your daily dose of Black baseball highlights. The story of Saturday had to be Jo Adell's hat trick of home run robberies. The last one on JP Crawford was unreal. Adell is known more his power, but he is proving he can flash the leather in right field. Congratulations are in order for CJ Abrams. His twelve RBIs in the Nats' first seven games is a modern-day franchise record. Kudos to Justin Crawford for the first stolen base of his MLB career. Jordan Walker (STL) and Cam Smith (HOU) both hit homers on Saturday. Jack Flaherty (DET) and Kumar Rocker (TEX) both had solid outings on the bump. All of that and more on Easter Sunday. Finish Your Easter Brunch.

Finish Your Breakfast 4.4.2026 (Nats Home Opener): I was on hand to cover the Nats home opener. The weather was great, the energy was high, and the back-to-back World Champion Dodgers were in town. I chopped it up with several of my favorite players and got a few great Mixtape polaroids. Much more content and coverage coming soon. To recap the day in Black baseball, several players showed out: Lawrence Butler was player of the game for the Athletics (3-5, 4, RBIs, HR), Josh Bell had two RBIs in the Twins' win. Aaron Judge led the Bombers over the Marlins. There were homers from Xavier Edwards and Marcus Semien. And Jordan Walker made one of the best throws of his career.

Short night in MLB, there were only three games played. Taj Bradley got his first win of the season. Josh Bell hit his second home run, and Byron Buxton got his first RBI of the year in a win over the Royals. The Braves embarrassed the Diamondbacks. Dom Smith hit his second home run of the season. Drake Baldwin is the first Braves' player to score in seven straight games since Hank Aaron. The last game of the evening was in the Bay, the Giants beat the Mets 7-2. I will be in DC covering the Nationals' home opener. If you see me around Nats Park, please say hello.

Cheats and Lewis Brinson discuss the first week of the MLB season. The Black Baseball Mixtape is brought to you in partnership with the Players Alliance, Minority Prospects, and Numbers Game scorebooks.

Phillies rookie Justin Crawford got his first RBI (run batted in) of the season. It was a big one. His walk-off single in the 10th capped a Phillies comeback. They were down 5-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. Crawford, 22, has a .412 batting average, a .444 on-base percentage, and a .471 slugging percentage so far. He's looking more comfortable in center field. The Phillies are now 3-3 on the season.Meanwhile, in St. Louis, Masyn Winn's single in the bottom of the 11th gave the Cardinals a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Mets. After the game, it was reported that Winn was in a car accident, but he appears to have avoided major injury. His condition will be monitored in the coming days and weeks.Over in Baltimore, the O's Sam Basallo made history yesterday. His bottom of the 9th ABS challenge is the first to result in a game-ending decision. Basallo went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The O's beat the Rangers 8-3. Elsewhere, the Braves' Drake Baldwin has been raking. Last year's NL Rookie of the Year went 2-for-5 with four RBIs last night. Baldwin would have had even more, but A's center fielder Denzel Clarke robbed him at the fence. The Braves are now 4-2 on the season, the A's 1-5.Turning to Miami, Sandy Alcantara threw a 93-pitch complete game shutout against the White Sox. Despite the strong performance, only 6,505 paid to attend. Alcantara, 30, acknowledged the sparse crowd, saying the fans don't come—but the team loves them anyway. The Marlins are now 5-1.Josh Bell hit his first home run of the season for the Twins, while Jo Adell notched his second RBI of the year for the Angels. Despite their efforts, both the Twins and Angels fell. Meanwhile, the Yankees secured another win, bringing both the Yankees and Brewers to 5-1 records.

Finish Your Breakfast: 4.1.2026 (April Fools') - Andrew McCutchen was not in the Rangers' lineup last night, but his hot start is worth noting. McCutchen is batting 455/455/909 to start the season. And to think, some teams thought he was washed (Pirates). No matter how his book ends, I am happy Cutch is having this chapter. In a 3-2 loss to the Phillies, seven of the Nationals' eight total hits came from American-born Black players (Lile, Nuñez, Wood, and Abrams). That stat has me wondering: What team has had the most hits by American-born Black players in the past few years? That's worth looking up. Cam Smith, Drake Baldwin, Victor Scott II, and Stanton all made the highlights. Not highlighted: Justin Crawford got a hit and scored a run. Rate my hat, it is a good one. See you tomorrow.

Finish Your Breakfast: 3.31.2026. There are no more undefeated teams in Major League Baseball. The Dodgers, Blue Jays, Yankees, Brewers, and Marlins all took Ls last night. The White Sox, Giants, Diamonbacks, and Rockies picked up their first wins. The Reds' Chase Burns looked dominant in a win over the Pirates. The Phillies' Taijuan Walker struggled against the Nats. Wood, Abrams, and Lile all had RBIs for the Nats. There was a Hill Boys reunion in ATL. Aluvie hit two out, and Correa looks like Brooks Robinson. All of that and more: FYB.

On this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape, the crew talks about the opening week of MLB action. The ABS Challenges SystemThe MLB Top Rookies The Dodgers, Blue Jays, Yankees, Brewers, and Marlins' success The Giants and A's struggles The Nats took two from the Cubs in Wrigley. Dominic Smith's MLB debut Grand SlamThe Seattle Steelheads Return Cheats, Flobo, April, and Malik are excited to discuss it all and much more with you. Sundays in Seattle are for Steelheads! Before the season began, it was announced that the Seattle Mariners would wear Seattle Steelheads uniforms on every home Sunday. The Steelheads were a Negro League baseball team in the brief West Coast Negro Baseball Association in 1946. They are part of Pacific Northwest Black history, though the league folded after two months.Building on this announcement, seeing the uniforms in action produced unexpected emotion and tremendous pride. The Mariners' media team did an excellent job telling the story of the Steelheads and included members from the community in their inaugural presentation. The uniforms look amazing, and this proactive action by the Mariners, who do not have a storied history in Negro League folklore, should afford the opportunity for teams like the Royals (Kansas City Monarchs), Cubs and White Sox (Chicago American Giants), Nationals (Homestead/Washington Grays), Phillies (Hilldale), Pirates (Grays & Crawford's), Orioles (Elite Giants and Black Sox), and many more MLB teams to honor their past in an exciting way. And, let's be honest, new uniforms bring in new revenue for the club too. It's a great business move.Turning to game action, the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Brewers are still undefeated. That may not come as a surprise to most; those teams all were in the playoffs last year, with stacked rosters. But, there is another team that is undefeated that is a surprise: Shout out to the Marlins. The Miami Marlins are 3-0 after sweeping the Rockies. Yes, I know the Rockies are trash, but live it up, MIA.Looking more closely at the 2-1 teams, the Nationals were impressive, taking two wins in Chicago against the Cubs. The Rangers took two wins in Philly, and Andrew McCutchen hit extremely well. The Reds taking two off the Red Sox was unexpected. Most pundits have labeled the Red Sox the team to watch. I know it's early, but the MLB season is off to a hot start. To wrap things up, thank you for sharing part of your morning with BBM. A new podcast will be recorded live tonight at 9 PM EST. You can watch on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, or you can wait for the audio on Tuesday morning. See you tomorrow.

I know this is only the first week of the season, but I need to catch my breath. MLB teams are giving out walk-offs, like old school Oprah: You get a walk-off, you get a walk-off, and you get a walk-off too.The most emotional walk-off victory belonged to the Braves and Dominic Smith. Smith is the first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam walk-off homer in his team debut. Smith, 31, lost his mother to cancer less than two weeks ago. He did not take time away from camp because he was battling for a roster spot. Smith said after the game that he felt his mother's presence with him last night. It was a beautiful moment for Smith, who is in the midst of a very difficult time. The Reds' Dane Myers got his first hit with his new club on Saturday, and, yes, it was a walk-off. The story of the Reds-Red Sox game will not be Myers; it will be umpire CB Bucknor. The veteran umpire (Bucknor, 63) was overruled by the ABS challenge system six times. I don't know what the consequences will be for Bucknor, but this is not good.In Chicago, the Cubs beat the Nats, but James Wood hit his first home run, and Nasim Nunez made one of the best web gems of the season already. Nunez was filling in for CJ Abrams, who has stepped away from the team due to bereavement. It is reported that he has suffered a death in his family.Taj Bradley (Twins) K'd 9 in 4.1 innings pitched. He didn't get a decision, but the Twins beat the O's 4-1.Aaron Judge has hit his second home run in as many days. Captain America is back after his Opening Day 0-5, 4K performance. The Yankees are 3-0, which means the Giants are 0-3. They did score their first run on Saturday, so there is that.In closing, Twins #2 prospect Kaeleen Culpeper and Orioles #9 prospect Enrique Bradfield are in the recap on Substack. Substack will be where you find a wider version of highlights.See you tomorrow. Finish Your Breakfast.

Judge, Stanton, Baldwin, Harris, and Betts all hit homers on Friday. And, I don't know Mike Trout personally, but you tell me: Is he invited to the family gathering? That dude is locked in. He has hit two home runs in two days, he's back in center field, and even stole a base.A heartfelt “Peace God” to Jason Heyward. The 16-year pro has officially called it quits. Heyward leaves the game with 5 Gold Gloves, a World Series Championship, and an All-Star appearance.Let me know your reaction to Friday's baseball action in the comments.

We Are Back! Opening Day is here, and so is the best Black baseball highlights and news recap in the game. From now until the final pitch of the World Series, Cheats and the BBM crew will be providing recaps and breaking news every day. Before we get too far, please consider a paid subscription to this platform. It's the best way to support the Mixtape and keep the community growing. As of this morning, twelve MLB regular-season games have been played, and we've learned a few things. The Dodgers are on pace to go 162-0 (again). The quest for a three-peat is on. And Dodgers' skipper Dave Roberts says the 2026 team is his best roster. It's hard to think Mookie Betts is on a revenge tour, but the 2025 Gold Glove finalist is hoping to bounce back from a down year. He is fully recovered from a stomach virus that really hampered the start of his 2025 season. He went 1-4 last night in a game shown on NBC, called by the legend Bob Costas. The Nats surprised the Cubs, beating them 10-4. The story of the game will center on CJ Abrams. The 2024 All-Star crushed a bases-loaded sure double, but got thrown out as he thought the ball was a sure home run, and it was not. He got thrown out at second, and that is really a microcosm of Abrams right now. Let's hope ‘26 brings more on-field maturity, because I think he is going to have a breakthrough year.Victor Scott II stole two bases in the Cards come-from-behind victory against the Rays. Mike Trout hit his fifth Opening Day homer to lead the Angels over the Astros. Tarik Skubal struck out six Padres in six innings for the Tigers 8-2 win. The Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Brewers, Red Sox, Guardians, and even the O's also picked up impressive Opening Day wins. And Tommy Pham signed a minor league contract with the Mets.See you tomorrow. FINISH YOUR BREAKFAST

This is a very special episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast. Award-winning author, journalist, and producer Howard Bryant returns to the Mixtape. Cheats and HB go one-on-one discussing his new book, Kings and Pawns: Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson in America. The conversation takes place in the immediate aftermath of the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., and Bryant and Cheats take a moment at the start of the episode to reflect on his legacy. The book is a must-read. Cheats and Bryant discuss many themes in the book, including the looming presence of the Cold War, the overeconomic climate affecting both Robinson and Robeson, political leadership, and, of course, the business of baseball. But the magic of the conversation is how they apply the themes of the '50s, '60s, and '70s to today's landscape.Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson are giants. But one's legacy, Robinson, is criminally misunderstood, while the other, Robeson, is woefully overlooked, even forgotten. The book tells an amazing story about these two men, and this podcast is an excellent companion.

A little-talked-about ripple effect in the declining numbers of major league Black baseball players is the decline in Black baseball fans. The players on the field notice it (at every level). The fans notice it. But it is not front and center to those covering the game. Since I've founded the Mixtape, I've been exploring the questions surrounding Black baseball fandom. And I must admit that my opinion has evolved over the last four years. Check out some of my recent thoughts on this solo podcast. Last year, you may have stumbled across a press story or social media post about a 40-year-old man who decided to play college baseball at the JUCO level. Well, that man is Aaron Rouselle, and he is our special guest on this joint episode of In the Booth hosted by Flobo Boyce and the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast. Coach Rouselle is a true inspiration to anyone with a dream. Yes, he played college baseball at an advanced age, but he is also a 2X liver transplant survivor, a cancer survivor, he had shingles, and he even had mold growing in his lungs. The fact that Aaron is with us today is indeed a miracle. He now leads young men in the game and teaches them more than baseball. He teaches his players about life. This episode is in partnership with the Players Alliance, Numbers Game Scorebooks, and Minority Prospects.

2026 will be the inaugural Banana Land season for the Indianapolis Clowns. If that name sounds familiar — it should. The Clowns bring a rich history to Banana Ball, rooted in the Negro Leagues. The Clowns were established in 1930 and were ultimately disbanded in 1962. Known as much for their entertainment as their baseball, the Clowns are the perfect team for a contemporary renewal in Banana Land. Coach Errick Fox has been tapped as the Clowns' manager.
