The Pirates closed a disastrous series in Cincinnati with a 9-1 loss, dropping three of four to the Reds and five of their last six games overall. Mitch Keller lasted just two innings and allowed seven earned runs, while the Pirates recorded only four hits and struck out 13 times against Chase Burns and the Cincinnati bullpen. Camilo Doval also surrendered a home run during his Pirates debut. With Pittsburgh falling below .500 and losing ground in the Wild Card race, the pressure is now on Ben Cherington to significantly improve this roster before Monday's 6 PM ET MLB Trade Deadline. Griffin Warner talks betting for Tuesday. Griffin Warner runs the entire Tuesday, July 28 Major League Baseball card on What I Bet, building his own numbers before diving into a sixteen-game slate that opens with a Battle of Ohio doubleheader and closes on the West Coast. He starts with a quick note on recent form, four wins in the last five, eight and three in the last eleven, ten and four in the last fourteen, and thirteen and six in the last nineteen, before working through the board game by game. Slade Cecconi and the Guardians open against Chase Burns and the Reds in Game 1 of a doubleheader created by a postponed opener, and Griffin says he would rather see Gavin Williams on the mound for Cleveland while still liking the under. Brandon Pfaadt and Arizona travel to face Bubba Chandler and the Pirates, with Griffin siding with a cheap Diamondbacks price against a team he thinks has the better roster. Aaron Nola and the Phillies visit Sandy Alcantara and a reeling Marlins club, and Griffin explains why he still does not trust Nola despite Miami's twelve game skid, pointing to Philadelphia letting Ranger Suarez leave as a longer term concern. Cal Quantrill and the Rangers face Griffin Jax and the Rays in a game Griffin mostly avoids given Tampa Bay's strength at limiting runs at home. The clearest opinion of the show comes on Dean Kremer and the Orioles visiting Troy Melton and the Tigers, where Griffin argues Detroit is undervalued and Kremer keeps earning more market respect than he deserves, referencing a rough recent start against Houston. Shane Bieber and the Blue Jays face Cade Cavalli and a shaky Washington bullpen, Chris Sale and the Braves visit Christian Scott and the Mets with Griffin leaning the under, and Game 2 of the doubleheader brings Brady Singer against Gavin Williams and the Guardians in a spot Griffin mostly passes on. Gerrit Cole and the Yankees travel to face Anthony Kay and a struggling White Sox team, Seth Lugo and the Royals face Taj Bradley and a Minnesota bullpen that has quietly turned into a strength, and Griffin leans hard to the under there. Colin Rea and the Cubs visit Michael McGreevy and the Cardinals, with Griffin backing St. Louis over a Chicago staff propped up by its defense. Peter Lambert and the Astros face Reid Detmers and the Angels, and Griffin explains why he believes in Lambert and why Jeremy Pena might be the hottest hitter he has watched all year. Michael Lorenzen and the Rockies visit Michael King and the Padres, Jake Bennett and the Red Sox travel to face Gage Jump and the Athletics in Sacramento, and Logan Henderson and the Brewers face Landen Roupp and the Giants in a matchup Griffin likes on pitching alone. The card wraps with Luis Castillo and the Mariners facing Eric Lauer and the Dodgers, a spot Griffin leans over if the total drops. He closes the episode with his single What I Bet best bet of the night, the Detroit Tigers minus 130 at home over the Baltimore Orioles, built on confidence in Troy Melton and skepticism of Dean Kremer's price. Along the way he points listeners to a promo code worth ninety eight dollars in savings on football season access packages running all the way through the Super Bowl, starting with the Hall of Fame Game on August 6. The fantasy baseball community received brutal news as Kansas City Royals ace Cole Ragans underwent a UCL repair surgery that will sideline him for the next 10 to 12 months. Corey Pieper breaks down a devastating injury wave, sweeping league suspensions, a major lineup shakeup in Houston, and the FanDuel Bet of the Day. A volatile day on the medical and disciplinary fronts sees Willson Contreras and Cade Cavalli hit with 7-game suspensions, while Miles Mikolas receives a 5-game suspension. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros have moved Cristian Javier to the bullpen, Matt McLain is beginning to see reps in center field, and Brandon Nimmo continues to sit out with a lingering shoulder injury. Roster managers must also adjust for Jason Adam landing on the injured list with a shoulder strain, Dustin May getting forced out after just two outs by a dangerous comebacker, and Kenley Jansen curiously being brought into the 7th inning of a blowout loss. On the positive side, dynamic starter Hunter Greene is officially locked in to return to the mound. Daily performance highlights feature a spectacular pitching duel where Jacob Misiorowski racked up ten strikeouts over five dominant frames against Chase Burns. Nathan Eovaldi fanned nine over five innings, Ian Seymour struck out nine across six one-hit frames, and Walbert Urena battled Bryce Miller in a stellar pitching showcase. Offensively, Brandon Marsh and Mickey Moniak triggered heavy production, Jake McCarthy shined as Colorado erupted for 14 runs, and Sal Stewart, Jordan Walker, and Carter Jensen all launched home runs alongside foundational standouts Dalton Rushing and Kyle Tucker. On the negative side, Framber Valdez collapsed for five earned runs with just a single strikeout, Davis Martin struggled heavily through 3.1 frames, Junior Caminero turned in an empty 0-for-5 day, and Roki Sasaki suffered a brutal daily regression. Killing the High School Draft: Why College Wins on Player Development

The Backside Groundballs Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2026 71:53

The MLB owner proposal to restructure the draft — including eliminating the high school portion and shrinking the minor leagues — landed last week. The reaction across the baseball internet was the usual reflexive "negative." This episode is the case for the other side, and it lands on a thesis BSGB has been building toward for two years: college baseball's player development resources are underrated, and the loudest criticisms don't hold up against the data.Trevor and Dan walk the proposal piece by piece, then spend the back half breaking down why college dev is the better environment for almost every prospect not named Konnor Griffin. The thesis arc:Cost-saving for cost-saving's sake (capped bonus pools, eliminated rounds) gets a flagCutting minor league teams to reinvest in the ones that remain gets a thumbs-upThe high school draft elimination is the heart of the conversationThe "college coaches don't care about development" take gets dismantledThe "minor leagues are safer because of pitch counts" take gets dismantledThe actual proof: Skenes, Lowder, Chase Burns, Nick Kurtz — each one built inside a college programThe injury prevention edge: programs running NewtForce mounds with integrated biomechanics flag the risk before the pitcher feels it (vs. a road-trip start in low-A with no data infrastructure)The trickle-up reality: spin metrics, high-ride fastballs, every "new" thing the MLB broadcasters discover — college was running it two years earlierThe coach reality: Wes Johnson, Matt Hobbs, Dan Heefner are at college programs because that's where the development happens, the resources are, and the pay matchesWhy people get this wrong:Survivorship bias. The Konnor Griffin and Jackson Holiday cases are real — they're also unicorns. The kids most baseball fans never name — Riley Pint, Lonnie White, the Guardians' "million-dollar outfield" — got drafted out of high school for seven figures and never sniffed the big leagues. Two years of high-level college baseball would have given them a shot at maturity, an education, a fallback, and a more developmental environment than the bus to Jackson, Mississippi. Why college player dev is actually better:Tech parity (or surplus) vs. an MLB org's minor-league systemTop coaches making more in college than they would as pro pitching coordinatorsIntegrated biomech + ground-force + bullpen data layers inside the buildingCoach access (Matt Hobbs, Dan Heifner, Wes Johnson) for direct daily repsEducation + maturity layer that no minor league system can replicateWhy this matters:The MLB owner proposal is a starting point, not a contract. But the premise that college baseball can absorb more of the development pipeline — especially with NIL paying these kids real money to stay — is on extremely solid ground. The case Trevor and Dan lay out here is the cleanest defense of college player development BSGB has done on the pod.00:00 Intro · Take Two (Wi-Fi-Loss Edition) 01:30 The Gym Streak + Sunday Move Day 09:30 The MLB Draft Restructuring Proposal 10:30 What's Good · Reinvesting in the Minors 13:30 What's Bad · Capping Free-Agent Bonus Pools 16:00 The High School Draft Conversation 19:30 Survivorship Bias · Riley Pint, Million-Dollar Outfield 23:00 College Player Development, Underrated 27:30 The Tech Offsets the Pitch Count 30:30 Skenes, Lowder, Burns, Kurtz · The Proof 35:00 Player Dev Trickles UP, Not Down 38:00 Injury Prevention Tech in College 41:00 The Coaching Reality · Wes, Hobbs, Heefner 45:00 Why Pro Coordinators Get Paid Less Than College Assistants 48:30 Recruiting + Roster Spots · The Transfer Pushback 53:00 The Education Layer + NIL 56:30 The International Draft Conversation 1:00:00 What People Get Wrong About College Baseball 1:04:00 Closing · The Game Wins If This Goes Through

Texas Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford officially lands on the injured list after suffering an unexpected physical setback. Corey Pieper breaks down structural managerial firings, significant minor league promotions, the weekly Waiver Wire segment, and the FanDuel Bet of the Day. The medical and transaction wire is in complete chaos as the New York Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza, Tony Santillan lands on the injured list with an oblique strain, and Marcelo Mayer, Robert Suarez, and Jesus Sanchez all hit the injured list. Meanwhile, Wyatt Langford hits the shelf, Tyler Soderstrom battles hip tightness, and Kai-Wei Teng is demoted, though fantasy managers receive reinforcements with Konnor Griffin returning, Hurston Waldrep being recalled, Adley Rutschman returning from the injured list, Sean Keys and Miguel Ulola earning promotions, Simeon Woods Richardson hitting waivers, Carlos Santana signing with the Braves, and Tommy Pham joining the Phillies on a minor league deal. Daily performance metrics highlight a stacked group of standouts as Hunter Goodman, Jake Bennett, David Peterson, Logan Webb, Kazuma Okamoto, Seiya Suzuki, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Luis Garcia Jr., Ryan O'Hearn, Sonny Gray, Junior Caminero, Brandon Woodruff, Esmerlyn Valdez, Chris Sale, and Kerry Carpenter deliver big games, while Michael Wacha clashes with Davis Martin and Robbie Ray battles Chris Sale. Conversely, a massive list of foundational aces completely imploded, with Dylan Cease, Logan Gilbert, Gerrit Cole, Andre Pallante, Chase Burns, Kyle Bradish, Michael King, Anthony Kay, Roki Sasaki, Jared Jones, and Spencer Arrighetti all relegated to the duds section.
