Josh is back on his feet and ready to bring you some new tunes and music industry chat, no Harley buuuuut....but.... The Lonely ol Josh talks his past few weeks of illness and madness and how music got him through PLUS BPI Warns Against ‘Unreasonable Bureaucracy' after UK Offers a Firm Post-Brexit Immigration Statement PLUS Sofar Sounds Overhauls Artist Payments After Being Fined $460,000 PLUSPLUS Josh gives you his top tips on how to get gigs! PLUSPLUSPLUS Music from Marigolds For the Hornets Surfquake Barny Holmes How Long Will Spotify Allow Bootleg “Podcasts” to Top the Charts? A substantial number of podcast bootleggers are delivering illegal music to Spotify users, and it's unclear how — or if — the streaming service will stem the tide of copyright infringement and stolen royalties. According to a report from Pitchfork, a simple-but-effective process allows users to make demos, live recordings, unreleased tracks, and a slew of otherwise unpublished songs, available for all to enjoy on Spotify: The works are disguised as podcasts. The streaming giant has not established especially stringent copyright-infringement filters for non-music content, and in turn, the compilations are staying live for sizable periods of time — long enough to rise to the top of the podcast charts, in many cases. while the inspiration for posting bootleg music may not be financial, the affected artists are being very directly — and very seriously — impacted. To climb to the top of the podcast charts, a program must receive many plays and positive reviews. UK Offers a Firm Post-Brexit Immigration Statement, BPI Warns Against ‘Unreasonable Bureaucracy' Having finalized Brexit and officially exited the European Union, the United Kingdom is taking steps to fundamentally change its immigration policy, as indicated by a statement posted on the UK government's official website. As expected, “free movement”—the ability of EU citizens to enter and exit the United Kingdom as they please—will be halted beginning in January 2021. New visitor-registration services will aim to more thoroughly document who enters and exits the UK, and post-Brexit border security will be bolstered. Additionally, a points-based immigration system will be part of a broader initiative to attract skilled foreigners to the country. The points-based system sets salary thresholds for non-citizen professionals who wish to become employed in the UK, in addition to evaluating these individuals based upon qualifications, education, experience, and more. Presumably, the European Union could fire back with requirements of their own, which would affect the way UK artists seek permission to perform in European Union states. Late last month, the UK government stated that it would not enforce the European Union's much-criticized Copyright Directive, which will strengthen copyright laws by holding web platforms liable for the content their users upload; only registered copyright holders will be allowed to share their media, under the Directive. Sofar Sounds Overhauls Artist Payments After Being Fined $460,000 As part of the update, which was announced via Sofar's website, “the beginnings of a brand new artist dashboard” have been instituted. When complete, this optimized dashboard will enable Sofar musicians to more quickly and easily access booking information and event specifics, in addition to promptly reserving performance slots. A beta has been made available to some Sofar users, with a wider rollout tentatively scheduled for March. Plus, the upcoming dashboard will boast enhanced artist-communication tools (through which performers can connect with other performers that they've met on the road) and will prompt attendees to support artists. Most significantly, though, Sofar Sounds revealed that they will continue to work towards a 70/30 profit split (in artists' favor) for “standard shows in ticketed cities.” In doing so, artists who sell a relatively large number of tickets will be paid comparatively more. For ticketed-city performers who sell between zero and 70 tickets, Sofar will pay $100; anywhere between 71 and 100 sold tickets will earn artists $125; and 101+ attendees will result in artists being paid $150. The rate “applies to all standard shows in ticketed cities,” according to Sofar. The aforementioned New York Department of Labor investigation zeroed in on more than 650 individuals whom Sofar classified as “ambassadors” and did not compensate. Sofar execs were said to have cooperated with the investigation, after which $460,357.50 was paid out to the affected employees, and the above-described overhaul was planned. Importantly, many cities book Sofar shows on a volunteer basis, and at these events, audience members can pay as much (or as little) as they like. Sofar Sounds' concerts typically involve three up-and-coming acts (artists, dancers, and even comedians can apply on the company's website). Venues are announced 24 hours beforehand, guests aren't told who will be playing until they arrive, and each artist's set generally lasts 20 to 25 minutes. Checklist for getting gigs *Promo package -Photos -Videos -Recordings *make a list of venues (think about the their usual genre and clientele, travel distance, do you know anyone in that town?) *make phone calls *make a list of promoters (think about how you approach them, bargaining power)* *analyse what other artists around you are doing in terms of promotion and marketing -Marketing is the process of interesting potential customers and clients in your products and/or services. The key word in this marketing definition is "process"; marketing involves researching, promoting, selling, and distributing your products or services.) *look for support opportunities (buy on *try busking *loss leaders *say thank you, take it on the chin *festivals look for stage managers and promoters and sound engineers, linked in *pricing is important, if you're a covers band don't under sell yourself. you can get gigs easy but also taken advantage of and other bands locally may not like you undercutting them giving you a bad rep. If you're an originals band the supply is way higher than the demand so don't expect much money, think about pitching how much money you can make them. We are still in beta and have not gone to market yet. Our platform takes advantage of 2-sided network effects which in our case is the value exchange between our two user groups (creators and music artists). We made it free in beta so that we can see how the community is interacting with this value system. By doing this we have created a ton of data exhaust which we will structure into features that we will build and eventually charge for. Our co-founder Michelle Phan is a content creator herself and has made it her mission to support creators and artists. As a part of that mission we will always keep the a good portion of the platform free. We will be rolling out a freemium to premium pricing model towards the end of the year. I can't go into too much detail here as we are still conducting user interviews and cohort analysis to understand what our users want us to build and what they will be willing to pay for these features. I can tell you that these features will be focussed on advanced analytics and targeting for music artists as well as curation (music supervision for your videos) for content creators.I hope that this makes sense but Im happy to jump on a call and discuss. Thanks again for all of your support and look forward to having your feedback. All the best, -Marc last week of teaching, mannings, bravo, baby shower, bravo, the forge, moorland, the hut, the swan, harwich, saxfest, old hall 45th sapphire anniversary, gladstone arms. Could new music festival put Ipswich on the map? Sound City Ipswich will feature 21 bands performing across three venues, with the aim of uniting the town behind the cause. The festival, which will coincide with a music conference, is set to take place across Ipswich on October 4 in a bid to encourage touring bands to visit the town. During the day a conference featuring artists, venues, promoters and industry figures will showcase Ipswich as a viable location for touring artists to play. There will then be evening gigs at the Corn Exchange, Manor Ballroom and The Smokehouse featuring local and touring bands. Other activities such as coffee shop acoustic gigs, DJ sets, workshops and a free BBC Introducing gig are also being lined up. Joe Bailey, Smokehouse owner and event organiser, said: "We're really excited to partner with Liverpool Sound City to bring a multi-venue festival to our home town of Ipswich. "We hope the festival will attract larger numbers of visitors to the town and prove the need for investment in the area's music infrastructure, leading towards the creation of more live music venues, increased engagement in live music and for Ipswich to culturally thrive; whilst supporting the development of bands and artists in the eastern region." TIKTOK OWNER BYTEDANCE BUYS AI MUSIC COMPANY JUKEDECK What could a global digital platform want with music generated by artificial intelligence? That question has been on the lips of the music industry ever since Spotify hired one of the world's leading experts in the field, François Pachet, in summer 2017. Warner Music Group inked a distribution deal with stress-reducing sound app, Endel – which, it was claimed, was the first-ever algorithm to sign a deal with a major label. User-video platform TikTok is becoming a very well-known quantity to the music industry, having helped break artists and tracks like Lil Nas X's Old Town Road. Its parent Bytedance, which is heavily rumored to be creating a Spotify-rivalling audio streaming service, announced last month that it now reaches more than a billion monthly active users via TikTok and other services globally. Tiktok itself hit one billion global app downloads in February, according to global market monitor Sensor Tower, with nearly 100m in the USA and 250m in India. July 23), we learn that Bytedance has acquired Jukedeck, a UK-based AI Music startup which has raised $2.5m to date from investors Guess what Jukedeck specializes in? Yep: creating royalty-free music for user-generated online videos. Music from: Underline The Sky Mammal Hands Sorrdes Josh Locke (Me!) The Naked French Slow King LESS THAN 1% OF ALL VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE EVER REACH MORE THAN 100,000 VIEWS That's according to new data from an analysis of YouTube's content published by analytics firm Pex, which claims to be “the most advanced video & music analytics platform on the internet”. the 0.64% of videos with 100,000 views or more on YouTube represent 81.6% of all views on the platform. Or, to flip that on its head, 99.36% of videos uploaded to YouTube draw less than a fifth of all views. Pex CEO Rasty Turek suggests that “should YouTube remove [these 99.36% of] underperforming videos, they would save an astounding amount of money and still retain most of the revenue”. over 400 hours of video are uploaded onto the platform every single minute. Although Gaming content is YouTube's fastest growing category of video, music is the most profitable. Videos under the Music category are also the shortest in length and generate the most views per average video. According to Pex, the average number of views for videos in the Music category are 16,397, at an average length of 6.8 minutes, with an average 2,411 views per minute of video content. Music content actually only accounts for 5% of all content on YouTube, but still makes up 20% of all views. DISTROKID PARTNERS WITH AUDIBLE MAGIC TO VERIFY MUSIC AUTHENTICITY Audible Magic helps to prevent “fraudulent artists stealing and uploading unreleased original content”. The move, say the two firms, will help protect artists by verifying the authenticity of both tracks and artists that the music originated from before music is distributed to streaming services. When an artist requests to upload song files via DistroKid, Audible Magic's RightsRx technology checks its registry of over 20 million media assets to ensure the artist-uploaded content is conflict-free before distribution to streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc. DistroKid will also be the first distributor to implement Audible Magic's detection tool Broad Spectrum. An extension of Audible Magic's ContentID service, Broad Spectrum can identify extreme manipulations of rate, pitch and tempo using only small clips of audio. The distributor has also launched a free service called DistroLock that allows any artist to upload and register their unreleased audio files through the platform, which will encode a unique audio fingerprint and add it to Audible Magic's registry. A much more modern and up to date way of retaining the rights to your music than just posting a CD to yourself. DistroKid developed this platform with Audible Magic's insights as an industry-wide solution that will request to block the unauthorized release of an artist's music (or “leaks”) from appearing on streaming services and social platforms. In April CD Baby entered into a partnership with Audible Magic to identify content rights conflicts prior to delivery to a Digital Service Provider (DSP).
