Imagine that a farmer poured months into growing their crop. They spent the entire growing season running their numbers, conducting soil tests, scouting fields, and produced the best crop they've ever had. Out of nowhere, they have a heart attack and can't harvest this season. Farming is one of the most physically demanding jobs in America. Unfortunately, illness and accidents can occur at unideal times. Farm Rescue is an organization with over 600 volunteers on call to help a farm in the case of an accident like the one above. Landus GROW Grain Marketing Advisor, Ashley Kaldenberg hosts Farm Rescue's Development Officer, Terry Johnston to talk about how Farm Rescue has been a literal life saver to farming operations across the United States. Highlights: •Farm Rescue is active in: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota •They can dispatch volunteers to help plant, hay, or harvest their crop, and feed livestock. •Their services are provided to any farmer who's experienced a major illness, injury, or natural disaster. •They come with their own equipment if necessary •Services are free to the farmer If you, or someone you know, needs Farm Rescue Services, send in your information to their website https://farmrescue.org/

Think of the most intriguing questions in ag. Does it have to do with sustainability? Labor? Succession planning? The bad news is that these are just a few of the topics that farmers are asking themselves. The good news is that Landus is hosting farmers to its Des Moines Connector to answer these questions and so many more on April 3 & 4. Spring break just ended and school is back in session. Join special guest, Charles Hurburgh, Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Professor at Iowa State University as he and Ashley Kaldenberg discuss the best practices to keep stored grain healthy before you sell. Highlights: We've been on the upswing in the market. The saying is “reward the rally.” Sell while the market is going up. Ideally, you cool grain immediately after harvest. Generally, you'll store below 40ºF, and freezing is OK Take your center cores out! Evaluating your middle cores for humidity, moisture, and mold progression helps you gauge when you need to sell As a rule of thumb, grain should be under moisture levels of 17% Links: Integrated Crop Newsletter (Iowa State University) Landus Grow On the Go bi-weekly newsletter USDA Acreage Report 2024 (Planting Intentions Report) Landus Innovation Connector Events
If you could know what every individual plant needed to succeed, you'd likely take that information and provide appropriate nutrients and protections to those plants. Now imagine that you have an avian business partner that takes to the sky for an hour every other week, and scans for deficiencies and areas of improvement at the plant level. Your little bird can give you distinct data so you can, “make decisions based on fact rather than feeling.” Landus SkyScout powered by Taranis provides this exact situation to farmers... except your winged, feathered business partner is a qualified agronomy expert armed with the modern technology of drone sensors and lenses. In this episode of the GROW Podcast, Landus Director of GROW Agronomy, John Finneseth, hosts Taranis Vice President of Customer Success, Pablo Bruzzoni; and Taranis Customer Success Representative, Corey Edge to talk about how SkyScout provides farmers with data gathered just a few feet in the air can break the boundaries of what we thought was possible for ag-data. When the season starts, farmers formulate a “game plan.” A plan that they curate with the help of their agronomists on what outcomes are likely to occur throughout the growing and harvest seasons. Last year presented challenges that we knew would present hardships. However, in every game plan lies an area of uncertainty. According to Landus Technical Agronomy and Precision Lead, Dan Bjorklund, “that's what makes agronomy fun.” In this episode of the GROW Podcast, Landus Optimization and Procurement Lead, John King, delivers his market updates and talks with Dan about the challenges that lie ahead for 2024. Nearly two years after announcing our GROW Solutions Center, Jamie Orr, GROW Agronomy Lead, and Janette Smith, GROW Grain Lead, join Ashley on the podcast this week to share the GROW Solution Center's accomplishments thus far and discuss how they are putting farmers' needs at the forefront of Landus. With a growing virtual team made up of agronomists, grain marketers, and data analysts, the Landus GROW Solutions Center is making it easier than ever to connect with growers and answer any questions they may have. “[Farmers] aren't working 9-5. They start their mornings early and they finish their nights late. They work weekends. So, the virtual team helps them be better. We're here to answer their questions...It's just about being there when the farmer needs you most.” - Janette Smith, GROW Grain Lead While the GROW Solutions Center continues to serve as a form of constant communication, it has also been used as a tool to establish meaningful relationships between Landus and our farmer-owners. Making it known that we are there to support growers every step of the way has been a major goal. With over 3,700 grain accounts and 95% of agronomy customers contacted, it is safe to say their team is doing just that. Jamie explains that by reaching out, Landus is better able to understand and serve the farmer of tomorrow; one that has a succession plan, operates sustainably, and is self-sufficient. John King brings the technical breakdown in the ever-changing fertilizer and chemical markets. The fertilizer market has been on the downturn while the Ukraine-Russia conflict, paired with Europe's mild winter, has lessened Europe's need to purchase product from other countries. Internationally, markets have been waiting for India to tender urea, which has come to fruition this week. Supply on the fungicide market is tight; get your chemical portfolio penned in as soon as possible. Overall, the market is in a transitional period. On this episode of the GROW Podcast, host Ashley Kaldenberg sits down with Derek Hommer, a risk management consultant from Nationwide, and Ahad Mujeeb, a EHS team member from Landus to talk about grain bin safety. February 19 – 25 is grain bin safety week, and given our farmers and team members are in contact with grain bins regularly, we felt it was important to stop and take a minute to remind listeners to be mindful of the dangers and how to stay safe. Derek and Ahad offered numerous tips, but most importantly a zero entrance stance. If we avoid entering grain bins there is a 100% chance that an engulfment or entrapment accident will happen. Tar spot is spreading into and being seen in more and more of Iowa. On this podcast, Meaghan Anderson a Field Agronomist with Iowa State University Extension, joins host, John King, and Landus Technical Agronomist, Dan Bjorklund to talk through this evolving disease. Meaghan explains the discovery of Tar Spot in Iowa and how we've seen the disease prevalence spread. The group dives into what tar spot is and how it impacts the crop. They talk through the optimal growing conditions for tar spot and timing for most impact. Even better though, a large portion of the discussion focuses on action and what can be done to help farmers manage the disease. The product of the month segment this episode focuses on Landus' recommendation for how to handle tar spot and what products and treatment timing. One key takeaway from this section, was to make sure to have a plan and plan ahead. John warns that product supply could be tight and how an advanced strategy will be key. Meaghan provided a variety of resources to share with our listeners (listed below). Dan also encouraged listeners to look into the Precision Ag High Yield Learning Groups being offered by Landus that will explore tar spot and provide data specific to your operation. You are probably asking yourself what soybeans and the Biltmore Estate have to do with each other. Take a listen to this episode to find out and hear other interesting insights and intel from podcast guest, Grant Kimberley, Senior Director of Market Development at the Iowa Soybean Association (@IowaSoybeans). Host, Ashley Kaldenberg, kicks off the podcast with a question on everyone's mind. What is up with soybeans? Grant shares that some big things are happening with soybeans, from soybean crush plants to renewable fuels, soybean meal to exports, research to yield growth, and more. Grant highlights the increase in 16 new crush plants and the drive for additional biofuels and renewable diesel. With the increase in oil, the offset is additional soybean meal. He talks about the advantage that domestic livestock producers should see as well as the opportunity for exports. Growth in soybean meal in rations, but also an increase in poultry and growth of aquaculture. There are also opportunities for diversified uses for soy-based products, aka Biltmore Estate connection! The episode includes a discussion around a look at corn and soybean planting. An act of the Iowa Soybean Association is to support research and they are looking at genetics and soybean yield growth. Kimberley discusses urbanization and how we've gone from growing to consuming, and therefore need to figure out how to yield more and reminds listeners that soybean is an easy-access protein for livestock rations. Ashley wraps up the episode by getting Grant's thoughts on some of the geopolitical unrest and China. Grant outlines the resources in place and how the industry in China plays a large role in a continued positive collaboration to maintain levels of export. On this episode, host John King and agronomist Dan Bjorklund sit down and talk about what they are seeing in fields and the market as harvest begins. From soybean cyst nematode to updates on the fertilizer market, this episode has you covered. Dan spends time talking through soybean cyst nematode and how we must consider tolerance versus resistance and look at seed selection that offers both offensive combined with defensive as a path to dealing with this issue. Please click here to view the Landus Seed Guide and the genetics mentioned by Dan. Also discussed was a growing concern -- tar spot. Dan and John explore thoughts on the impact of tar spot on this year's yield and Landus' approach for furthering research into tar spot at our Farnhamville research test plots. We will have a recommendation going into next year as to what we feel will be the best solution to manage tar spot. The Landus YouTube channel offers additional resources. The fertilizer market is still messy and we are impacted by plants not working, lack of supply, the war, and the price of natural gas. John encourages listeners and Landus farmers to stay on top of their fertilizer needs by keeping in communication with their Landus representative or the GROW Solutions Center. Finally, the episode closed with the Product of the Month. This time we featured YaraVita® PROCOTE™ and Titan® XC. This winning combination will maximize your production potential. Titan XC is used in dry fertilizer blends and helps growers get more out of their applied P & K fertilizers by increasing nutrient availability. ProCote delivers the micronutrients in an application that has 99% less granular dust and more consistent distribution. Check out this video by host John King. John gives an update on the fertilizer market and summarizes the state of the market in his words, it is armageddon. (Slides) With the volatility, John offers that the best advice to combat the situation is to stay close to your Landus team as we help navigate the market in real time and offer the best solutions indicative of the daily fluctuation. We kick off the episode by introducing new Landus Team member, Brad Sherwin, who joins us as a Technical Agronomist Data Analyst. We will have more from Brad but he gave a glimpse into the predictive analytics program that he has developed that uses farmer's own data on a field by field basis.
