In a missing persons investigation, the initial hours and days are crucial. Establishing a relationship with the missing person's family, absorbing their behavioural characteristics, and managing media interest in the story are all essential parts of the toolkit for officers charged with finding them alive. But, 27 years ago, when Charlie Hedges MBE was assigned his first missing persons case, such protocols did not exist. He found institutional inertia and complacency where there should have been dedication and service - and set out to right that wrong. In this compelling conversation with Olly, Charlie looks back over his career finding missing people - including Dr David Kelly, April Jones and Ashya King - and reveals the techniques and temperament necessary for the job, especially in these days of internet sleuths and social media speculation. Charlie's book, Missing, is out now, published by Hachette. _______ Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart channels his inner James Martin to kick up a storm in Olly's kitchen: specifically, a five-course meal made entirely using air fryers. With the help of AirFryerGirl and ProCook, Ollie impresses with a delicious molten Camembert and honey-mustard pork - but is frankly rather let down by his raw carrot crisps. Along the way, the boys consider whether the popularity of air fryers will last beyond the cost of living crisis, uncover which tabletop gadgets will become the next kitchen must-haves, and ask why Tiktokers don't provide recipe PDFs… _______ Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox uncovers the trend for ‘CEI' humiliation videos, and assists a Mann-fan whose daughter wants to reject the HPV vaccine - because she's a lesbian. In collaboration with gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal, Alix discovers why the HPV vaccine is important for all young people, regardless of orientation; explains how the virus can be transmitted; and reveals the efficacy of the vaccine and the common myths surrounding it. _______ Finally, we're going hip-hop for our Record of the Month, ‘Passion', from LL COOL J's first album in 11 years, THE FORCE
In today's episode, Kat chats with Nadine Crocker, an award-winning Director, Writer, Actress, and Producer, known for her impactful storytelling. Born in Nashville and raised in Fresno, Nadine moved to Los Angeles at 16 to pursue her passion for creating art that changes lives. We discuss her deeply personal film, Continue, which is based on her own survival of a suicide attempt and will be released in theaters on September 6th, 2024, for World Suicide Prevention Month. The film has garnered multiple awards, including "Best Director" at various festivals, and is the cornerstone of her nonprofit, "Continue On," focused on mental health and suicide prevention.Nadine opens up about her struggles with mental health, which began at a young age and culminated in a suicide attempt at 23, followed by years of self-harm before finding a path to healing. This experience became the foundation of Continue, where she relives her story through acting, directing, and producing—a profoundly emotional process, especially when faced with industry feedback that mental health is a topic "no one wants to talk about." During the episode, Nadine discusses her mental health journey, how she's used her struggles to move forward with gratitude, the lack of understanding around mental health during her upbringing, how the film has changed her life, her discovery of a passion for directing, and the challenges she faced in creating this movie. Ultimately, she hopes to help push the mental health movement forward. This episode is an incredibly raw discussion on mental health and is a must-listen.You can find Nadine on Instagram here You can learn more about Continue here Content Warning: Suicide, Suicidal Ideation, Self Harm, Substance Abuse, Abuse, Disordered Eating

TRANSCRIPT HERE Today we pay tribute to brother and editor of the podcast Nic Fornasier (11.10.1990 – 22.6.2023). We release in one episode, 2021's originally 2 parter episode, where Nic joins Steph as they explore the dysfunctional family opus, The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Directed by Wes Anderson and written by Wes and Owen Wilson, it was Nic and Steph's shared favourite film of all time. Together they asked the question, can narcissistic dads who abandon their kids make up for the resulting trauma? And if so does this movie portray this situation with nuance and respect? Steph and Nic do their best at diagnosing the characters, discuss how the family relates to their own lives, and whether the Wes-isms in the film are helpful or harmful for the viewer. We dedicate this episode to Nic. We love you Niccie. CONTENT WARNING: Suicide (particularly from 1:35:13 – 1:39:18), substance use and addiction (including personal experiences), depression, self harm, childhood emotional manipulation and neglect, cancer, discussions of sexual content, death of a family member, death of a dog, incest?? This episode's food selection is from Gump IGA's Deli Department, located at 57 Maple Ave, Grafton, WV. Open Daily 7 AM-9 PM. Here's what we ordered: Shared: Hot pepper cheese and mozzarella pepperoni rolls, each loaded with nacho cheese and hot dog sauce In this episode, Kelsey tells the tale of Arthur Duperrault and his love of sailing. This is also a tale of deceit and murder. Arthur and his family finally saved up for a yacht charter trip in 1961. The man hired to sail the Bluebelle, Julian Harvey, would later be recovered from a raft as one of the only people discovered alive from the trip. Arthur's daughter, Tere Jo, was found later by another ship, clinging onto life on a cork raft, and she would tell a much different story from Julian's. Tere was the only survivor who wasn't murdered on that trip. Content Warning: Suicide description around 23:30 mark. We also talk about local park amenities, veteran mental health, and we're pretty sure this is our cheapest lunch we've ever ordered for the show. (Note: Their deli does make a plain pepperoni roll, I think we just pay more attention to cheese.)
