Dr. Madeline Barlow is a former collegiate swimmer, individual and team record holder, and NCAA qualifier. She is also CEO and Founder of Mind-Wise Mentoring LLC, The Director of Programming and Key Note Speaker for The Hidden Opponent, and a Transition Coach for Athletes Soul. Self described as “highly sensitive,” swimming initially provided support, self reflection and muted the intensity of her world creating joy…until it didn't. While competing in college, Madeline often got stuck between high levels of self awareness and action leading to recurring overwhelming episodes. When her swimming career came to an end, she kept moving forward and didn't allow her self to process the transition out of competitive sports until her body demanded that she stop and acknowledge the loss. Through her “Mind-Wise” method and her book, "The Highly Sensitive Athlete: How to Embody the Magic of Your True Self in and Out of Sport," Madeline Barlow validates that we are human and offers actionable tools that give us the choice to challenge ourselves or give ourselves grace.” @mindwisementor

This month on the podcast we are serving up honest discussions about our mental wellbeing, so I am so excited on this episode that we are joined by a mental health advocate and the host of one of my fave podcasts, ‘The Real Pod', Victoria Garrick Browne. Victoria, just like this podcast, is all about destigmatising conversations about mental health after she first started to experience mental health problems at college, when as a division one Volleyball player at USC, she experienced performance anxiety that affected all aspects of our life. She has since gone on to share her story across her incredible social media account (find her @victoriabrowne across socials if you haven't already), on an incredible Ted Talk you need to check out and Victoria even co-founded her own charity, The Hidden Opponent which aims to help athletes with their mental health. In today's DMC, we talk about the stigma around loneliness, why we need to put busy culture in the bin and Victoria shares some amazing advice for talking about, and dealing with, your mental health. If you are struggling with your mental health right now, I hope this encourages you to reach out to those around you to share your feelings. Even if you can't find the words right now, I promise it will help. And if this episode helps you please get in touch. You can find me @joshsmithhosts across socials. It's always so great chatting to you! Love, Josh xx P.S. I am so proud to bring you these special episodes of the podcast which are focusing on our self care and wellbeing with my favourite skincare brand, Elemis. During the change of seasons so many different feelings can come to the surface so it's important you make positive self care decisions everyday to help your wellbeing. Wellbeing looks different for everyone but it's the simple things that make the big difference for me, like using Elemis's Pro-Collagen Green Fig Cleansing Balm every day just to reset. Its formula combines the ripe, green and earthy tones of Fig, Raspberry, and Bergamot for a fresh, calm and uplifting scent which has been used for centuries in aromatherapy to help relieve tension and stress. That's what I love about Elemis's formulas: they use high performance scientific ingredients with blended essential oils that not only give you visible results but give you a moment of mindfulness, too. So go on, practice self care and treat yourself to a good skin day, it might just make a difference that isn't just skin deep, head to Elemis.com now. Learn more about your ad choices. When Victoria Garrick Browne began experiencing anxiety and depression as a Division 1 college volleyball player, she recorded a TED talk about her experiences. The result was a domino effect leading her to become a social media influencer and mental health advocate. Here she sits down with Women on the Move host Sam Saperstein to talk about her journey. The decision to speak up It was during her sophomore year at USC that Victoria began struggling with the demands of being a high-level competitive athlete. “I was really struggling with my own mental health and just the intensity of the stressful environment that I was in competing at that level,” she tells Sam. “In going through that performance anxiety and a depressive episode, I kind of realized that if I'm feeling so alone, there's probably other athletes who are feeling alone.” She also realized that she wasn't hearing anyone else talk about the issue. Her solution was to talk honestly about it in a TED talk. “I just did not want someone else to kind of suffer in silence the way that I did,” she recalls. “So I gave that TED talk purely to come up on Google search and comfort someone else. It spiraled and it went viral in the athletic community.” Hurdles and the strategies that helped That TED talk catapulted Victoria to popularity, especially among athletes and coaches who started following her online and reaching out. In those early days, she says, her goal was for people to genuinely be able to validate themselves and know that it's okay to not be perfect or to experience failure or struggle. “I've literally never met a student athlete who said they got through four years of college athletics, no matter the division, no matter the sport, and said it was a breeze,” she says. “Everyone can relate to the struggle.” Victoria discusses the challenges that she typically sees people face when confronting mental health issues. One of the biggest ones, she says, is not understanding the change in mental health as it happens. “These things happen gradually,” she says. “You don't wake up one day in the midst of your depression, you slowly drop down to that place.” A second hurdle, she says, is the stigma around being worthy of getting help. As far as strategies and approaches that worked for her, Victoria says one of the main ones is therapy. “It's powerful to have an expert hear what you are going through and then kind of offer their advice and guidance.” If connecting with a therapist isn't an option, she says talking to a trusted friend or journaling can also help people handle their complicated emotions. Meditation is another strategy that Victoria says she finds helpful—and this doesn't have to be as scary as it might sound, she adds. “It can be as simple as 10 minutes without your phone in the morning sitting with yourself, maybe you're thinking a lot, listen to your thoughts and then you'll recognize, oh my gosh, my thoughts always take me to work,” she explains. “My thoughts always take me to the situation. I'm gonna try to bring 'em back here. That 10 minutes to slow down your entire day and just be with yourself. I think that that's powerful and I do that in the mornings.” The Hidden Opponent Soon after her TED talk went viral, Victoria created the Hidden Opponent, a nonprofit advocacy group focused on creating a platform and a community for athletes to discuss topics like mental health. “We highlight student athletes and their stories,” she tells Sam. “We give them a voice. We're always publishing and posting articles that the athletes have written about what they've been through. I remember feeling like, Where do you talk about this? Where do you say it? How's it gonna be received? And so we've created that safe space where athletes who do want to be vocal can be, [and] we educate the members of our community.” As far as ambition in her own life, Victoria says she's trying to manage it in a good way—in a relentless pursuit of helping herself rather than being perfect. “I definitely consider myself ambitious, consider myself a go-getter,” she says. “However, I do think that that ambition has become a default state of who I am and the default state being constantly better, constantly improved, constantly do more. And of course it serves you well when you can become successful and you can build something, and that's great. However, it doesn't allow you to ever turn off, reap the benefits or take a break or pause. And it's funny because my whole message started as it's okay not to be okay, take a break.” Full transcript here

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with former collegiate athlete, coach, and COO of The Hidden Opponent, Leeann Passaro. We explore what the Hidden Opponent is and its mission to raise awareness of student-athlete mental health. Leeann explains how a friend's suicide introduced her to mental illness as a child, before then struggling herself with anxiety and self-confidence in high school and college. These experiences prompted her advocacy for student-athlete mental health that we talk about today. We discuss the far reaching impacts of toxic team cultures on everyone involved, even after stepping away from sport. Leeann opens up about her negative experiences in college with her coach and offers up advice to athletes for maintaining good mental health. As well as normalizing mental health struggles, we emphasize that health is out there and you can find a happier place! Leeann and I talk about the good and bad sides of social media, and its influence on student-athlete NIL deals. We leave listeners with actionable advice for achieving and maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit, as well as resources like The Hidden Opponent for further support and community. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with former Team USA and NCAA Division I swimmer Eva Merrell. Eva was a high school standout, competing in the US Olympic Trials and named to the US Swimming National Team at 16 years old. After being recruited as the top high school swimmer and committing to The University of Georgia, Eva found herself battling anorexia nervosa. Today, she bravely shares her own eating disorder experience, discussing how her desire to be a “good athlete” led her down a path of restriction, weight loss, and poor performance. We talk about the physical signs and symptoms of eating disorders, debunking the myth that a low heart rate is always a good thing: a slow heart rate could be a sign of a weak and failing heart. Eva talks about receiving the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, recovery and relapse, multiple hospitalizations and treatment while being an NCAA DI athlete. We discuss the place for sport during eating disorder recovery and the need to sometimes take a break. For Eva, this break was forced upon her and led to her medical retirement from swimming while at the University of Georgia. She opens up about the difficult decision to stop swimming and prioritize her mental health, sharing about the new identity she found outside of sport. This includes a passion in advocating for mental health, and now works for The Hidden Opponent, a non-profit that works to de-stigmatize mental health in athletics. Eva hopes that sharing her story will help struggling athletes and those around them identify disordered patterns, know they are not alone, and that support is out there. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with college athlete and mental health advocate Arla Davis. Arla is a two sport NCAA student-athlete, competing for Ithaca College's lacrosse and track and field teams. She holds multiple roles outside of her own athletics, including being a Campus Captain with The Hidden Opponent, and co-chair of Ithaca College's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), as well as being involved in research about women in sports. We introduce listeners to the amazing work of The Hidden Opponent, pioneering student-athlete mental health awareness. Arla shares her passion for addressing student-athlete mental health on her college campus, and we give listeners tips for self-care and prioritizing mental health even without a diagnosed condition. Arla and I discuss high school and collegiate athletics, the transition between the two, and opportunities to explore more than one sport. Arla highlights the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on both sports and mental health, and we talk about skills for balancing a busy life with wellbeing. We touch on the topic of intimate relationships in college and on mental health, both the good and bad, and Arla's experience being in a long-term relationship. Linking all these discussion points is the importance of prioritizing mental health in college, a time of rapid change and novelty, and we direct listeners to available resources like The Hidden Opponent. What an incredible opportunity we have today to hear from Division 1 Lacrosse Player, from the University of Pittsburgh, Kiara Feibusch. We'll tap into the sports side of this conversation where Kiara helps us with understanding what the lacrosse world is truly like. We'll chat about club/travel team lacrosse compared to that of normal high school lacrosse. She'll give us all some advice on the recruiting process of lacrosse so we know what goes on behind the scenes and what other younger athletes should be doing in order to get in front of the coaches they want to play for. We'll get to hear of her favorite memories and advice on mastering the basics so you have a solid foundation of your sport. Today's conversation is even more powerful because we will tap into the topic of mental health as it's a huge part of Kiara's story. I first was able to see her story on The Hidden Opponent where I learned of her silent struggle with depression and how she overcame that. Today on the show, she'll open up about that struggle so our audience can learn more about it. Our hope with this piece of the conversation, is for young athletes and even those around them such as parents, coaches, etc. can have an understanding of what to look for in those battling with their mental health, as well as what resources are availbale (or should be available) for them to overcome those battles. You're absolutely going to love this interview! All I ask for in return, is that to show your support of Kiara and the show, is to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts! If you leave us a review, it can get out to more and more people! :) Thank you so much for your support! I also want to give a massive shoutout to the sponsor of today's episode! Leah Jantzen grew up playing multiple sports but never felt like she really pushed herself. After 4 children, she reconnected with fitness at the age of 40. Two years later, she ran her first marathon and a few years later qualified for Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii in 2020. Due to circumstances out of her control, the biggest race of her life has been postponed for two years. She discusses her ongoing training process, navigating the mental/emotional challenges through this process while managing life as a mother, guidance counselor, coach and endurance athlete by “showing up every day. “ In a few short weeks, she will finally be able to complete her “unfinished business” while raising money and awareness for The Hidden Opponent, an organization dedicated to mental health and awareness of student athletes. @leahjantzen, @thehiddenopponent

Welcome to the first in our series on "Back to School & Off to College".Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 in the U.S. and Nearly 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide and 9% have made an attempt to take their lives. My guest today, author Jackie Simmons, and her daughters are working to change those numbers. Through founding the Teen Suicide Prevention Society, they are working to educate parents to have"The Suicide Talk" with their teens and young adults regardless of whether or not they see signs of struggle. In this episode Jackie takes us through this talk, the importance of it, and how it can possibly save your teen or young adult's life. She is showing us how normalizing talk around suicide is the only way to pre-empt it.In this episode we discuss:Why the "suicide talk" is so important. What it looks like and how it works. How many numbers of people are affected from one suicide or attempted suicide. Why pre-empting suicide with open dialogue is so important. How parents "miss" the signs of their children's struggle. The best prevention tool. How to suicide proof. How the talk and language around suicide is being normalized and why it's a good thing.Who is at risk of suicide?Knowing the best time to have the suicide talk.I hope that you will search out Jackie at the free tools she has available. Mental health is a topic that should be brought to everyone's attention and today I have my friend Piper to open up about her own experiences of how she combated this stigma. We discuss how important it is to bring awareness about this touchy subject since it is something that is not keen to one's eye.
Victoria Garrick—mental health advocate, the host of “Real Pod” podcast, and former D1 athlete with more than 1.5M followers—is back on the show this week. Victoria hasn't been on the show since December 2020, so there's obvi a lot to catch up on. Victoria tells Aleen why she's not shedding for the wedding (she was also on Betches Brides recently—check it out) and then they chat about Victoria's “alternate reality” videos, where women actually celebrate their body insecurities. Next, Victoria tells us what it was like to be a collegiate Volleyball player, who was struggling from mental health challenges and how that experience has helped her to love her body for what it is, and not what it could be. Victoria then tells Aleen about her non-profit, The Hidden Opponent, which raises awareness for student-athlete mental health and aims to end the mental health stigma in sports culture. The episode wraps up with Victoria confessing something that she doesn't share on social media. Get excited, Victoria's coming back again this week for DST Thursday.

In this episode Elise and I discuss subjects such as confidence, pressure, having fun with the sport, mental health, journaling, the importance of having a strong support system, and lots more! Elise drops so many nuggets of wisdom in this one. Every episode I do with Elise I'm blown away by the amount of wisdom she brings. When people who have recently discovered the podcast ask me what episode they should listen to first, I always reply, "Any of the ones with Elise!". She is truly an amazing person who does so much good for so many people's lives. Lastly, Elise is currently on a mission to raise $10k before May 27 for a non-profit organization called, "The Hidden Opponent". Dr. Arman Taghizadeh, also known as “Dr. T”, is a Johns Hopkins trained psychiatrist who is Board Certified in both General Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He also specializes in Sports Psychiatry and is on the advisory board for Victoria's non-profit, The Hidden Opponent. He has been featured in Baltimore Magazine as a “TopDoc” every single year since 2016. He is currently a faculty instructor at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where he teaches seminars and supervises residents. On this episode, Dr. T joins Victoria for a unique discussion to analyze the ways in which destigmatizing the conversation around mental health has actually presented new issues... Have "anxiety" and "depression" become buzz words? Is it now the "cool" thing to have mental illness? Has normalizing the issue actually perpetuated it? Today's guest is Victoria Garrick. Victoria is a former Division I volleyball player, TED Talk speaker, podcast host, and mental health advocate. She was a four-year starter at USC, where she won a PAC-12 Championship and finished her career with the top five most digs in program history. Today she has well over a million followers on her social media platforms, hosts the “Real Pod” podcast, has a TED talk that has been viewed over 370,000 times, and founded a mental health nonprofit, “The Hidden Opponent.” What is really inspiring about Victoria is that her entire platform has been built from sharing her story. You may think that her incredibly successful collegiate career would guarantee happiness for Victoria. But like so many, the external accolades didn't quite fulfill her internally and the immense pressure started to impact her mental health. During her sophomore year, Victoria found herself heavily depressed, anxious, battling an eating disorder, and experiencing body dysmorphia. She finally reached a breaking point where she decided to go to therapy and unpack what was at the root of all of this. After this, Victoria bounced back and returned to finish her junior and senior seasons and the rest is history. She has been on an absolute tear ever since to share her journey to help those that are experiencing similar struggles. Today our discussion on the pod encapsulates it all. Victoria will walk you through what rock bottom looked like for her, how she healed and got to where she is today. She shares what she felt were the contributing factors that caused her mental health demise and what helped her feel empowered again when she began her transformation. We chat about Victoria's struggles with body image, why so many people face difficulties with this, and how to overcome it. Victoria talks about her relationship with food today and how she deals with competition in her current line of work. She talks about what inspired her to start sharing her story and what she would change if she was in charge of youth sports and more! She's a former Division I Volleyball Player, TED Talk Speaker and has now become a social media Influencer, and mental health advocate. Those are the facts about Victoria Garrick. She's young, she's incredibly energetic and passionate. She's highly competitive. And she's struggled with depression as well as a binge eating disorder, the latter of which she's only now started opening up about. After graduating from the University of Southern California in 2019, Victoria has traveled the country speaking on college campuses, hosts her hit podcast Real Pod, and creates daily content for her army of over 1.5M+ people who follow her message of authenticity and self-care on social media. Unit3d is going on a brief vacation so we are replaying some of our favorite episodes! Kelly Hilinski has chosen this episode from November 2020 as his favorite to share again as a "re-United." Victoria Garrick played volleyball at then ranked #1 USC and worked her way from walk-on to starter. As with many successful athletes, she appeared to have it all together and had everything to feel happy about, but as we know, things are not always as they seem on the surface and Victoria was fighting the hidden opponent of pressure, anxiety, body-image and struggles with mental health. She shared her story in a very popular Ted Talk (The Hidden Opponent), and now works as a mental health advocate and also hosts a podcast called “Real Pod.” On this episode of Unit3d, Victoria shares insights from her journey and the importance of leaning on each other through tough times.

Ben Ruvo, CEO of The Hidden Opponent, steps up to the plate to face the stigmas within sport culture on Mental Wellness Wednesday. The President eloquently talks about creating a safe space for student-athletes to share stories and support one another. Mental health is on a spectrum that includes both biological and environmental factors, and all student-athletes are collectively in the same boat with the uncertainty of the upcoming school year. Instilling systems to weather any storm, including COVID, The Hidden Opponent has implemented an umbrella system of Campus Captains to be mental health advocates across universities nationwide. Looking to be a part of the outstanding mental wellness support team, Ryan sends Ben an SOS and applies for a new internship within the organization. After inspiring The Chrises to start a new segment, One Word, Ben chooses “vulnerability” as the single term to sum up The Hidden Opponent. The man on a mission to continually learn and help others leaves The Chrises, and listeners alike, feeling great.
