Joanne P. McCallie is an established basketball coach, author, and mental health advocate. With over 600 victories under her belt and winning The National Coach of the Year in 2005 along with her lifetime of experience dealing with her own bipolar disorder, Coach P is perfectly placed to offer wisdom on continuing to achieve success while simultaneously supporting ones own mental health. Rob asks her about her life experiences and how she encourages and educates individuals and organisations on mental health issues, coaching, sports success and leadership. KEY TAKEAWAYS Coach P is a coach by accident. She was in sales but didn't enjoy it and returned to Graduate School to learn about coaching and became the youngest head coach in the country. At 30 years old Coach P was diagnosed with Manic Depression, now called Bipolar Disorder. In her late 20's as a new mother and burgeoning coach she had her first manic episode, completely with no warning. A manic episode projects energy and enthusiasm so can go unnoticed in a sport setting. At home is a different story, however, with insomnia, stress, hyper activity as the displaying symptoms which eventually causes a nervous breakdown and Coach P was admitted to a mental health facility. Even though there were only three episodes, bipolar disorder has framed Coach P's life so she wrote the book ‘The Secret Warrior' to share her experiences to honour the loss of two of her players to cancer and suicide. Mental health is a word to be celebrated. Mental health impairment should be respected and understood. BEST MOMENTS ‘As an example of somebody who has been through mental health episodes in my life and diagnosed, I'm trying to do my best to continue to coach and be Coach P for life, and use my coaching skills to help people across the world.' – Coach P ‘There's a little bit of a bias towards males because there's a thing that men don't open up so much, are not so good at opening up as the ladies about things. So its a real hot topic and its not going away.' – Rob ‘I was not too great of a patient. I rejected help a lot. I was trying to take my meds, denied taking my medicine, didn't want to take my medicine and as an athlete could not believe that my body, my mind.. I was a division one scholarship athlete. How dare! It could never be the case that something was wrong.' – Coach P ‘I was advised against this. Immediately said ‘when you share this you're done.' And so when I heard that I said ‘ok, I'm gonna keep coaching', got recruited to Duke.' – Coach P ‘Your players are not supposed to die before you. Your children are not supposed to pass before you. In April I'm in a church at Staceys funeral who died of breast cancer.' – Coach P ‘When they are asked ‘what do you miss' they say exactly the same as you..the banter, the craic, the laughs, the jokes and every professional footballer in this country all they want back is to be able to go back to the dressing room and have that culture.' - Rob VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST JOANNE P. Joanne P. McCallie, (CoachP4Life.org) is one of the most inspiring and incredible people I've ever met on this show or in real life. She joined Coach Val (Whiting) and I for this polarizing and powerful episode to discuss her journey from when she was a young brat cussing up a storm when she would miss jump shots while her dad, a navy pilot would rebound for her while in Coach K's gym, illegally. She shares how she went to Auburn University as a Graduate Assistant sight unseen and how at age 26, became one of the youngest head women's basketball coaches at the Division I level in the history of the United States. But it was four years into her Maine journey where today you will find out the rest of her story about her initial diagnosis and denial of bi-polar disorder to where she is today as an incredible, inspiring, and courageous firestarter, author, mental health leader, speaker, cancer survivor and virago; a true warrior in every sense of the word. I cannot thank Coach Val enough for her endless love and support and for also being so transparent about her own journey navigating bi-polar disorder and thoughts of suicide. Remember, you are not alone when it comes to mental health. There's no difference as to whether you need blood pressure medication or high-cholesterol medication or medicine because you are bi-polar to help balance out the chemicals in your brain. We need to continue to normalize mental health and demystify the stigmas that accompany them on and off the court, especially in the black and brown community. If you are feeling like you want to end your life or know someone else who is talking about it, even in what may appear to be in a joking manner, you or your friend or family members can always call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the suicide prevention hotline at, 800.273.8255. #MentalHealth #BiPolar #Maine #MichiganState #MichiganStateSpartans #Duke #DukeBlueDevils #ESPNW #Nike #SecretWarrior #Big10 #MarchMadness #ACC #CollegeBasketball #NorthwesternUniversity #AuburnUniversity Check it out where ever you listen to your audio and video podcasts! Coach P has drawn upon her own personal experiences, triumphs and professional challenges to create her passionate life philosophy: “Choice, Not Chance.” This simple but powerful mantra serves as the foundation for the award-winning athletes and competitive teams she builds and leads — an approach to life can be applied to sports teams, business teams, student athletes and even parenting. Coach P is one of the most highly decorated female college basketball coaches in the country. She became the first Division I head coach to win conference titles in four different leagues: the ACC, Big Ten, America East and North Atlantic. She was also the first Division I coach to be named Conference Coach of the Year in four different conferences five times. And, she is the only Division I head coach to lead two different programs to 30-win seasons with three National Championship game appearances. CoachP's commitment to player and personal development is second to none. Getting young and old alike to commit to “the process” of making great choices while pursuing reason over emotion in life's challenges is at the very core of Coach P. Why You Should Listen? Working for Coach Joanne P. McCallie at Duke has taught Hernando Planells that life is about “Choice Not Chance.” To Coach Planells everything is a “Choice” is doesn’t happen by “Chance.” People justify when things don’t go their way saying, “It is not meant to be.” Coach Planells believes that too […]
Turbulent times seemed to be following Duke Basketball, and we are not discussing Grayson Allen’s habitual tripping problem. Transfers, in-house investigations, and disappointing finishes clouded the women’s program, and rumors floating around of unhappiness with Coach Joanne P. McCallie’s performance. Welcome to January, 2017 and the Duke Blue Devils are sitting at number 13 in the AP poll and 15 in the USA Today Coaches’ poll, with a 12-1 record heading into a two game road trip of Georgia Tech tonight and 6/8 Florida State this weekend. Departures from the program took 47 percent of last year’s scoring with them, and wiped away a lot of the optimism coming from the eligibility of ex-Maryland guard Lexie Brown. With the rise of some other ACC programs, the Blue Devils were picked in the coaches’ pre-season poll to finish sixth in the conference. What has happened, though, is a synergy between Brown and returning Rebecca Greenwell, herself a pre-season selection for all of the major national individual awards. The duo is the third-highest scoring backcourt combination in the country, averaging 36.6 points per game. Both play approximately 33 minutes per game. Greenwell scores 19 per game, Brown 17.6. They are also within ten assists of each other on the season, and three turnovers. Brown gets the steals (3.0 per game); Greenwell gets the rebounds (6.6 per game). Together, they thrive. It is a pleasure to welcome Rebecca Greenwell to the Dishin & Swishin podcast to talk about the Duke women’s basketball season, highlighted by wins over South Carolina, Kentucky, and Louisville in impressive fashion. Greenwell has one of the smoothest three-point strokes out there, and is on track to shatter Duke school records in several categories, and she is only a redshirt Junior. Topics discussed include: When did the players start to believe this team could be this successful?Louisville’s i
