Nixon and Watergate

Campaign 1996For me it was the campaign of my lifetime.  No race ever equaled the life altering impact of that year in my life. This was the year that I got to see up-close two of the political figures I most admired, Senator Bob Dole of Kansas and Strom Thurmond. The South Carolina Presidential Primary turned out to be the most important of all the primaries that year as Bob Dole was in a fight for his political Presidential survival and two Governors and Strom Thurmond stepped in to help him win it. Then that same organization stepped up to insure that Strom Thurmond was re-elected to a 8th term. I was a tiny little cog as a volunteer and College Republican Chairman at Lander University in Greenwood S.C. and after graduating I helped out in my hometown of Myrtle Beach. I had been around politics all my life but it was 1996 that I got to be right there, for the first time, at the feet of two of the political figures I most admired as they campaigned across South Carolina, first in the upstate for Dole and then for Thurmond in the Low Country. In the Thurmond race there really was only one issue and that was the Senator's age. National publications were trying to cast doubt on the Senator's mental fitness ( a totally bogus charge, I was there and the man was amazing) , the Democrats from Washington D.C. had recruited a billionaire member of the Springs Mills family, a huge textile company, in Elliot Close, and finally there had begun an influx of new residents into the state that were not as familiar with Thurmond's actual record of constituent service as the native Carolinians had been. If ever Senator Thurmond appeared to be vulnerable in his 74 year career, this was it. But D.C. just did not know S.C. as well as it thought it did. Thurmond put together an incredible team to shore up his political defenses. He had two governors, Carroll Campbell and David Beasley working on his behalf, arguably one of the best Republican Party Chairmen in the nation  in Henry McMaster working for him, and three legendary political campaign people working on his behalf in Manager Tony Denny, and consultants Cindy Carter Thompson and a very young Robert Cahaly (The Trafalgar Group) all on the team.  Not only that, he had the State's Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler and its Speaker of the House David Wilkins on Board and Myrtle Beach's famous State Representative Mark Kelly all working overtime to insure Thurmond won.  And let's not forget, the two day - 10 county nonstop bus trip across the state, known as "The Thurmondator Bus Tour" where Strom Thurmond himself barnstormed the state, courthouse to courthouse, festival to festival, just like a campaign of old. Elliot Close did not know what hit him. This episode is that story and you will be able to relive as much of it as I was able to save. By the time this show is over you will be quoting the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, "I feel Good!!!"  As Mr. Brown makes an appearance  to help Senator Thurmond celebrate this final election victory to capstone his incredible life and career. ** I wish to acknowledge the fine work of WIS TV 10,  SC ETV, and CNN for their news broadcasts that we used in putting these three podcasts together, much of which was aired over a three day period when the senator passed away. The Lowcountry Gullah PodcastTheculture, history and traditions podcast where Gullah Geechee culture lives!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Kurtis talks about what he has done lately to bring his best, and Belinda shares a tasty beverage! Here is a little bit about Shannon:   Shannon Grissom Artist Statement I'm woo woo. No two ways about it.  I create in the 5th Dimension. Whether I paint a traditional portrait or a band of sock monkeys, my work has always contained a spiritual component. It's not enough for me to get a likeness of the subject. I won't stop until the spirit of the subject leaps off the canvas and speaks to you. No matter what life offers, the intention of all of my creative expressions, is that they focus on the good. Background I was a late bloomer. I didn't discover painting until I was 33! Once I finally realized I wanted to be a professional artist, I was hooked and driven. I'd get up early each day to paint for a few hours before the start of my day job. This demanding schedule was worth the effort. By 1999, I was able to leave my day job and began to create art as a full-time business. And thus began the amazing ride... At 44 I began production of the television series, Give Your Walls Some Soul. The inspirational how-to painting show grew from an audience of one station to over 50 stations across the country. It was seen in over 10 million households, winning numerous awards. It is still airing today. At 46, I published my children's book Monkey Made of Sockies. From that book came a line of licensed merchandise, a coloring book, and the popular Monkey Made of Sockies golf club headcovers that have been carried on tour by several LPGA pros. Today I am an award-winning artist, television producer/host, author, and songwriter. My artwork is licensed and sold globally, and I just launched an online art school "Painterly." So many people have helped me along the way and I am truly grateful. It is my mission to give back by supporting others on their journey.   Episode 4: BYOB By Self Advocating with Trigeminal Neuralgia with Belinda Gravel In today's episode, the hosts talk about what they have done recently to bring their best and enjoy a tasty beverage during the interview. Psychic Evolution

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 12, 2022 43:44

Join Jamie and Maggie Clark with their guest, Barbara Wheeling, as they tackle the topic of the numerology for the year 2022. In this episode, she talks from a numerological standpoint about what is in store for 2022. Barbara has been studying numerology for a long time and has been working with numbers her whole life, given her PhD degree in Accounting.   2022: A Year of Love and Relationships From a number perspective, the sum of the digits of 2022 adds up to six. The number six is a universal year, and according to Barbara, there is more energy emphasis on home, family, community, responsibility, and service. This energy is far different and more harmonious than 2021, which was a five year. She explains that the number five is associated with change, movement, progress, adventure, and travel. She adds that the number five is not very stable, so there is a lot of drama that goes with it. Going back to 2022, Barbara says it is more about love, caring, and relationships – a good energy for healing. Other associations include abundance, home beautification, creating a harmonious home life, and a good year to get married. Barbara clarified that other years are not bad years to get married per se. It is just that the energy is much emphasized for 2022. Despite everything said, it is only a general numerology reading of the year. One's personal year number still has things to get accounted for.   Personal Year Number Besides the universal year number, each person also has a unique personal year number based on their birthday. The personal year number, combined with the universal year number, dictates what energy will be emphasized for 2022. For personal year number one, it is a good time to start something. Number two is about connecting and preparation, and three is more of a creative type associated with socializing and having fun. Meanwhile, it is more about getting things organized and developing a process to create harmony for number four. Five is about growth and is also associated with travel, while six emphasizes everything since it is the same as the universal year number. For number seven, it is about intellectual or spiritual energy and could be a good year for healing. Money and abundance await number eight, which could be great for those in a business or focused on their careers. Lastly, number nine is about service, and 2022 is a good year for charity work, community service, and the like.    About Barbara Wheeling: Barbara Wheeling served as the dean of the College of Business at Lander University. In 1996,  I was a student at Lander University and to complete my Mass Communication T.V. production project to graduate I decided to create a Lander College Republican Recruitment video. I was the Chairman of the College Republicans at the time. I got lucky!! 1996 was a Presidential election year and we had every candidate running come through town and so I managed to get snippet interviews from several of them. I was also able to tape speeches by the candidates. In an entirely different race it was also Strom Thurmond's last campaign for the Senate. He was an amazing 94 years old that year and he was still on his game. I filmed all the speeches that year at the Third District Convention in Greenwood , South Carolina. Here was then first term Republican Congressman Lindsey Graham introducing Strom Thurmond. Thurmond fired up the crowd in what was a great old school stump speech and nobody did it better than Strom Thurmond.  Enjoy this stepping back in time.

Dr. Daniel Harrison joins Mike to talk about his latest book, Live at Jackson Station. We hear how Dan became a Sociology Professor at Lander University in South Carolina before we dive into the importance of storytelling as Dan tells the story of Jackson Station, a legendary blues bar in Greenwood, South Carolina in the 1980s and early nineties. We learn about the tolerance and diversity of the music scene at the bar before things take a “True Crime” turn with a bush ax attack in the parking lot at 3am. Along the way Dan and Mike muse about the relevance of sociology and the future of higher education. Then we touch on Dan’s first book, Making Sense of Marshall Ledbetter, which tells the story of a university student who broke into the Florida State Capitol in 1991 and holed up in the Sergeant-At-Arms office resulting in a standoff with police replete with a surprising list of demands and a climactic conclusion. We conclude by discussing Dan’s recent article titled “Sociology at the End of History”. In all, it’s an entertaining listen that you won’t want to miss. If you are like most small business owners I work with, you went into business because you are good at what you do – graphic design, hospitality, construction, farming, retailing etc. You may be one of the 95% of small business owners who discover that although you work like a dog every day, you have little to show for it. You may be feeling isolated because you don't think there is anyone to discuss or share their greatest fears and challenges with. Which leads me to one area I'm guessing is definitely harder to grasp than you thought it would be: the management of money. If you are like most, you never dreamed that the ability to understand how money works would be very important. You thought: “That's for the accountant (or bookkeeper) to worry about. Sure, the accountant shows me a few reports from time to time, but I don't see the need to really understand what they mean. If there was a problem, he/she would tell me, wouldn't they?” You probably don't realize that all those numbers - the financial DNA of your business - can tell you a lot more than you thought. They can tell you why you're suddenly struggling to pay the bills. They can reveal why you'll have to forego your salary - again - because there just isn't enough cash. The financial numbers are the story of your business. The numbers don't lie. You just need to learn HOW to listen to them and use them to your advantage... which is why today we are going to practice a bit of Financial Foreplay®. Bio: Terrell Turner is an experienced Certified Public Accountant (CPA), finance leader, podcast host, speaker and founder of TLTurner consulting firm that is focused on making accounting and finance a little less complicated for business owners and business leaders. In addition to all of the fun of consulting, hosting a podcast and speaking engagements Terrell enjoys spending time with his wife Lola Turner and traveling to enjoy new experiences.   Highlights: Less than 3/10 of all businesses have a grasp on their numbers Business owners always take their personal mindset (whether or not they have adequate savings buffer, spending habits etc.) into their business with them, which explains why most don't have enough cash Think of your income statement as if it were a major motion picture – you would have lead actors, supporting actors, investors, and critics If you want to make a blockbuster movie (or successful business) should you focus on the supporting actors (and critics) or your lead actors?   Get in Touch: Business Talk Library Site  CFO consulting Online Learning center LinkedIN  YouTube – Business Talk Library Facebook: Business Talk Library by TLTurnerGroup - @TLTurnerGroup Instagram: Invite a Friend to Practice a Little Financial Foreplay®... I tabulate the poll votes on Monday and then release on Tuesday. But this is no regular year. Monday saw a handful of results, including a tri-meet hosted by Thomas More against Lindsey Wilson and Rio Grande, which was making its collegiate wrestling debut. The first time out wasn’t super great for Rio Grande, coached by former Kansas Wesleyan head coach Jason Schweer. Lindsey Wilson ran through the Redstorm (one word) 57-0. The Blue Raiders also blanked Thomas More 48-0. Things weren’t much better for Rio Grande in their second dual of the day as they fell to Thomas More 57-0. Midway, a second-year program in the NAIA, picked up two wins on Wednesday night. The Eagles, who are located in Midway, Kentucky, topped Truett McConnell 27-14 and the first-year program at St. Thomas, the one in Florida, 32-21 in a tri-meet held at Truett McConnell. The other match saw Truett McConnell beat St. Thomas 38-15. Division II Fairmont State has selected Colin Johnston as its second wrestling coach. Johnston, a Pennsylvania native and alum of West Virginia University, takes over for Chris Freije, who left to become an assistant coach at Lander University in South Carolina. Johnston was previously the head coach at Division III Pitt-Bradford. Anthony Jones Jr. was tabbed as  the new associate head coach at Division III Olivet under head coach Brandon Brissette. Cole Hauser plays Wright as he returns to his hometown and finds himself back near a wrestling mat after years away.   On this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Jason Bryant talks with Hauser about the role, the release and production of the film and how he approached taking on a role of a wrestler and wrestling coach for the film.  The film gets released digitally on Apple iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Prime on December 8.Find out more about the film at http://www.thelastchampion.com/SHORT TIME SHOTS (the scores and such)Typically Monday is a wasteland for college wrestling results, it’s one reason why when I coordinate the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, the results go through the previous week’s results that end on Sunday.

Jones was an assistant at his alma mater of Michigan State prior and he’s got Division III coaching experience, helping start the program at Adrian under current MSU assistant Chris Williams, who served as the head coach at Adrian.

They speak about the Choson dynasty classic tale ‘The Story of Changhwa and Hongnyon', the origins of this story in the 17th century, its popularity and the subject matter, how the story has changed over time, the earliest English translations, how during the Japanese colonial period the tale revives and becomes central to Korean national identity and a symbol of the daily suffering being felt, the escapist elements of the narrative, the universal aspects of the story that made it so appealing within the deeply hierarchical society of Choson Korea, the moral lessons within the text, and how the story has survived and even found a new home within the movies, literature, and popular culture of modern Korea. Franklin Rausch is an Associate Professor of History in the department of History & Philosophy at Lander University. Hello welcome to another great episode of Cooking With Petey Nature. Tune in this Sunday August 26th @ 8pm EST/7pm CT/ 5pm PST to check out the show with my special Guest Chef Trudy. Chef Trudy Aka Erica McCier-Rayford from Abbeville, SC. I am a single mother of 3 and the chef and owner of Trudy's Personal Chef and Catering established July 2012. Growing up I've always had a passion for food. I grew up in a large family where everything was centered around my grand parent's house. I credit my grandfather Napolian McCier for my love of food and nature. Everything that we ate growing up, he grew it or killed it. In a sense he taught us how to live off of the land. I can vividly recall being a little girl observing my grandfather and his brothers harvesting sugar cane and making their own molasses. My grandmother, Molcy McCier was the one who first taught me how to cook. There was never a day that passed by that you could not find biscuits, hot water cornbread and fatback (along with my grandfather's molasses) on her stove. During the summers every Friday night was the neighborhood fish fries. I still live in the same neighborhood which I grew up in. Back in the day everyone looked out for each other. No one in the neighborhood went without and until this day our neighborhood is still the same. I haven't always had a career in the hospitality industry, upon graduating from high school I attended Winthrop University and Lander University where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts and a Master's In the Art of Teaching. I taught in Abbeville County School District for 7 years until I fell ill with kidney disease. It was then when I decided to attend Culinary Arts School at Greenville Tech and Virginia College of Greenville to pass the time away until I received a kidney transplant. I was on dialysis for 5 years and I received a kidney transplant in 2013. After my transplant I had fell in love with being a chef and decided to change my career.

He learned at an early age how to use laughter to pierce through tension and in some cases, ease pain. As a result, he developed an affinity for comedy and used it as a way to cope through difficult situations he faced as a child.   After graduating from high school, Mike enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for a total of 12 years - four in active duty, and the balance as an ROTC cadet and commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserves. As an adjunct to this week's podcast with Tim Russell, I also had the opportunity to chat with Dave Miley who has written a very detailed article about the ITF Transition Tour (https://www.facebook.com/davemileytennis/posts/987689468064829).  Dave Miley was the Executive Director of Tennis Development for the International Tennis Federation from 1991 until 2015 and in this role he lead the biggest department of the ITF and was responsible for the non professional activities of the ITF including junior tennis, senior tennis, wheelchair tennis, technical and anti-doping as well as the ITF’s Development Programme. During this time, he visited over 140 countries advising National Associations, conducting coaches’ workshops and directing junior training programmes. Dave was actively involved in the ITF’s High-Performance programmes, helping to establish 5 residential training centres in Africa, Central America and the Pacific and overseeing the ITF’s Grand Slam touring team programme which involved 150+ players per year and included Gustavo Kuerten, Marcos Baghdadis, Grigor Dimitrov, Victoria Azarenka, Li Na, Hyeon Chung and Cara Black.  Dave established the ITF’s coach education programme in 1993 and was involved in producing the ITF’s recommended syllabi for coaches which is now available in over 20 languages. He started the publication “ITF Coaching and Sports Science review” in 1992 and was the author of 7 tennis books including the ITF Advanced Coaches Manual, the ITF Schools Tennis Initiative Teachers Manual and Developing Young Tennis Players. He also was responsible for the creation of the tennis i-coach which was launched in 2007 as the ITF’s distance learning platform.
