Leslie Vernick shares insights on overcoming decision paralysis, handling an unengaged spouse, and finding clarity even when the path forward is uncertain. Key Takeaways 1. You Don't Have to Make the Perfect Decision Many people stay stuck in indecision because they fear making the wrong choice. But the truth is, no one has perfect information all the time. Even a wrong decision can provide valuable insight, allowing you to adjust and move forward. Indecision Is Still a Decision Choosing not to decide is, in itself, a decision—with its own consequences. Ask yourself: Is he afraid of making mistakes? Has he been criticized in the past? Does he struggle with change? By approaching the situation with understanding rather than frustration, you can free yourself from bitterness and take action where necessary. 4. Understanding Fear and Avoidance in Decision-Making Fear can be paralyzing, especially for someone who has been conditioned to avoid risk. Some people resist making decisions due to past trauma, upbringing, or personality differences. For example, if your spouse grew up in an environment where mistakes were punished harshly, he may struggle to take initiative. Recognizing this can help you approach the situation with grace rather than resentment. 5. When You're Not Allowed to Make Decisions What if you're on the opposite end of the spectrum—where your spouse makes all the decisions, even when they are harmful? If his leadership is damaging your family financially, emotionally, or spiritually, you may need to establish firm boundaries. Seeking wise counsel, setting limits, and refusing to enable destructive choices are crucial steps in reclaiming your voice and protecting your well-being. 6. The Power of Boundaries and Choice Having boundaries helps you exercise your power of choice. This is what I will do. This is what I won't do. This is what I can do. This is what I can't do. But setting boundaries also means learning to live with others' disappointment and resentment. Whether it's your children, spouse, or extended family, making decisions that are good for you—and ultimately for them—often comes with resistance. Accepting this reality allows you to move forward with confidence rather than guilt. 7. Living from Your Noble Self Instead of Your Emotions Acting out of your noble self means making decisions that align with who you are in Christ, rather than being driven by fear, resentment, or a need for approval. It's about showing up in your life with strength and dignity, just like the Proverbs 31 woman. You don't need to apologize for being wise, decisive, or courageous. God designed you to make choices, and embracing this responsibility is part of spiritual maturity. 8. You Always Have Choices Even in the hardest circumstances, you still have choices. Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, wrote that everything can be taken from a person except one thing: the ability to choose how they will respond. If you feel trapped in your marriage, your job, or another painful situation, start by asking: How do I want to be in this moment? What small steps can I take toward change? Recognizing your power to choose—even in small ways—can be incredibly freeing. 9. Trusting God in the Decision-Making Process God doesn't expect you to make perfect decisions, but He does call you to trust Him and take action. The Bible says, “You will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it'” (Isaiah 30:21). As you seek wisdom, make the best choice you can, and be open to self-correction when necessary.

Daniel Maigler is the mental health advisor for Paws for Patrick, a non profit that connects young people with mental health issues to emotional support animals. Host of the mental health podcast Not Allowed to Die, school social worker, therapist in private practice and a proud husband, and father to two boys and Mariska the three toothed Patterdale Terrier.For a therapist losing a client to suicide is the worst case scenario. For me that loss was compounded by the loss of my nephew to suicide a year later. I was given the opportunity to turn my pain into healing for myself and others when I was asked to become the mental health advisor for Paws for Patrick by Patrick's family. In addition, I help pull back the curtain on how mental health treatment works on my podcast Not Allowed to Die where I share dilemmas I'm seeing in my practice as a school social worker and therapist and interview guests who have a unique take on mental health. Since 1999 I have worked with over 1000 teens with mental health issues in a variety of settings from hospitals to groups homes as well as schools where I have been a social worker and guidance counselor. I was also the lead presenter for Up2US: QSI which gave actionable steps of how to get men to be more involved in standing up against intimate partner violence and sexual assault. Then as an adult, I ended up being attracted to and attracting people who punished me (consciously and subconsciously) for putting any of my needs or desires first. This only reinforced the deeply rooted belief that there will be a painful price to pay for setting boundaries and getting my needs met. So I became a well-groomed People Pleaser in an effort to stay “safe,” and not be abandoned by those I loved. “[Pets] are empathy machines, and they can sense how we're doing without us having to say anything. Daniel discusses the benefits of emotional support animals, and clarifies the differences between a service animal, a therapy animal, and an emotional support animal (“ESA”). He talks about the process of obtaining an ESA letter, as well as the benefits and limitations that this letter has. Daniels touches on some of the trends involving ESAs, including their presence on college campuses, and clarifies some of the misconceptions surrounding these trends. Over the past year we have received several independent reports suggesting serious distress in the Mormon missionary program, including: A sharp decline in the number of LDS missionaries overall. A sharp decline in the number of young men willing to serve missions. A significant increase in the number of LDS missionaries returning home early. Troubling new rhetoric/teachings from Mormon church leadership suggesting (out of seeming desperation) that Mormon missionary service for young men is mandatory/compulsory. I F'ing LOVE complaining, in fact, it's a necessary part of my manifestation process. Every day I hear someone make an apology after they vent or complain about something that's upsetting them. My response is always the same… “Please complain, love, you need to get it out…you are allowed to have all of your feelings.” Most of us were taught that complaining is BAD. That makes you a negative person, ungrateful, and even a downer. I was strictly NOT ALLOWED to utter anything that could be taken as a complaint growing up (or my mom would verbally abuse me and then ignore me as a form of punishment), and in turn, I never felt fully heard or understood. Then as an adult, I would judge myself harshly and even beat myself up for being “too negative.” (taking over the “punishing” my mom did to me) Being pleasant and Ms. Positive all the time is a form of denial and dissociation. When I come across someone like this, I know they are in a deep amount of pain with decades of suppressed emotions. Babies cry. Toddlers have tantrums. Dogs bark. Cats hiss. But we as adults are supposed to put on a happy face, only speak positive words, and stay in gratitude in order to manifest everything we desire? If that was the case, I would have a miserable broke-ass life. Complaining and going on rants about what is upsetting me gets it out of my system so it doesn't consume me. It allows me to feel heard and accepted by God, the Universe, and myself. Often the answers for what I desire or what actions I need to take come after I vent. It's a form of emotional purging, which provides great clarity.
