As we continue our promise to put out regular shows (whistles self-consciously), it was with much delayed anticipation that we reached out to Master Printer and user of all film formats from half frame to 20x16 Mr Andrew Sanderson who agreed to come and chat with us. Although Andrew confesses his website isn't up to date here is the intro bio from that site. “Photographer, master printer, author and tutor. One of the UK's leading Photographers and a master printer, Andrew has written the definitive book on Night Photography: A Practical Manual; the highly acclaimed Home Photography: Inspiration on Your Doorstep and; is a regular contributor to photographic magazines in the U.K. He is an Ilford Master Printer, and regularly gives workshops to university tutors, students and private individuals. Andrew is recognised as the leading practitioner of the paper negative process and one of the world's best hand colourists. Examples of both of these techniques can be found in his third book; Hand Colouring and Alternative Darkroom Processes” See below for links to all four of Andrew's books including the recently updated book from Blurb on paper negatives.     Things we chatted about on the show:   Andrew kicked off the show by mentioning an obscure fact about Andrew Sanderson and Gene Nokon – Gene was the man behind popularising if not first inventing f-stop printing and Erik found this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoAiBNSpg6Y   You can also purchase copies of Gene's book but like many out of print titles it can be expensive so keep a watch. https://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/title/photographic-printing/author/nocon-gene/   Erik uses Arista 3.0 Ortho Litho film and their EDU sheet film in various sizes – go to the Freestyle website for more info. https://www.freestylephoto.com/531451-Arista-Ortho-Litho-Film-3.0-4x5-100-Sheets   Andrew's books. https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/9673228-paper-negative-photography?fbclid=IwY2xjawGsBzFleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTl7pBmkQKJe5_2nrsw1WIjerws8J8xw5Bi4AkSGaqZQg4lY78xK_g8C4w_aem_0Rh3eAGch4cpEfCxZjljmg   Andrew's other three books are out of print but still available via, WOB, Better World Books, AbeBooks or Ebay   “Night Photography” Argentum Press ISBN 1-902538-12-9   “Home Photography – Inspiration on your doorstep” ISBN 0-8174-3989-7   and   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Handcolouring-Alternative-Darkroom-Processes-Photo-lab/dp/2880465516   Fellow Master Printer Robin Bell was mentioned – Andrew Bartram has a DVD called “The Silver Footprint – the art of Robin Bell Master Printer” A documentary by Richard Dunkley – you may need to shop around a bit.   There is a book also but also expensive – Silver Footprint.   We discussed the unique properties of the Ilford Art 300 darkroom paper. https://www.ilfordphoto.com/multigrade-art-300-sheets   Andrew recently reviewed his growing print collection, it's useful toget help so he asked his friend and fellow photographer Matt Lathbridge to assist. How can school leaders make informed decisions about reading curriculum when they know the home environments among their student body vary widely?I don't envy people tasked with these kinds of decisions. My opinion is that schools should ensure students get their instructional needs met during the school day, because it's difficult to control what happens to students once they leave the school campus.Direct instruction of reading has to fall on the plate of educators. If we assume certain practices will be done at home consistently, we create huge equity issues. With all that being said, school staff can work to create a shared partnership with families and communities. Even though they might aim to include the essentials during the school day, they can provide opportunities and tools for students and families to support literacy outside formal classroom instruction.I invited Susan Brady, a reading specialist from Illinois, to De Facto Leaders episode 179 to discuss how she's helped her community get access to books and extracurricular activities that support literacy. Susan Brady has been in the teaching profession for over 40 years. She worked in a private school where she taught first grade and kindergarten. Sixteen years ago she began work in the public schools as a kindergarten teacher. In 2008, she received her Master's Degree in Reading from Governors State University and became a Reading Specialist. She moved to middle school 5 years ago and works with small groups, large groups, and push-ins. She also has started and run engaging book clubs for her students to help get them excited about reading. This episode is part of the National Literacy Month series of podcasts, presented in partnership between the Be Podcast Network and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).In this conversation, Susan shares:✅Are reading teachers getting the pre-service training they need to critically evaluate research and implement instructional practices?✅Relying a curriculum versus leveraging a curriculum to guide your practice✅How to start a book club and get students excited about reading✅Where to find inexpensive or free books for schools and families✅Navigating logistical and equity issues when hosting community events and running extracurriculars. The following resources were mentioned in this episode:Our partner for the National Literacy Month Campaign, Reading Is Fundamental (https://www.rif.org)Better World Books (https://www.betterworldbooks.com/)First Book (https://firstbook.org)BookShare (https://www.bookshare.org) United for Literacy (https://www.bookshare.org)Little Free Library (https://littlefreelibrary.org)In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop a strategic plan for putting executive functioning support in place in collaboration with their school teams. Flashback Friday: Episode 293, how to build a literary life with Zibby Owens.

Writers, if you're paying attention at all, you've heard from Zibby Owens in the past 2 years. She's the host of the Moms Don't Have Time to Read Podcast and the creator of Zibby Media, which at this point includes a magazine, a publishing house that's having a great month with, among other books, The Last Love Note, which KJ highly recommends and an LA-based bookstore. In 2022, Jess talked with Zibby about how she launched her literary life--and as that life gets bigger and bigger, we thought it was time to share her story again. Ever want to know “how she did it”? This episode is our little version of How I Built This, in which we ask Zibby Owens—whose name you surely know by now—about how she turned a desire to be part of the world of books into a one-woman mini book empire.Zibby Owens is the host of Moms Don't Have Time to Read, a daily podcast featuring interviews with authors that has over 900 episodes. She's also a Bookstagrammer with 16K followers, the host of a second podcast—Moms Don't Have Time to Have Sex—the editor of two anthologies, Moms Don't Have Time To and Moms Don't Have Time to Have Kids—KJ contributed to that last one—and now the CEO of Zibby Books, a new publishing home for fiction and memoir. She's a regular contributor to Good Morning America, she's been called “America's Top Bookfluencer” and she has two books coming soon: Princess Charming, a picture book, and Booked, a memoir. She's also got four kids, and they're kids—elementary and middle school age, not a bunch of independent high schoolers wandering aroundBut.Five years ago Zibby was none of those things (except a mother of four). And that's what I want to talk about. She's built a massive literary life, a community, a reputation in just a few years, and—after totally owning the fact that she has help with her kids (heck, not just help, they're completely gone every other weekend because, divorce sometimes works like that) and also that this isn't how Zibby earns a living— we go back to the beginning and talk about what it took to get there.Because no matter who you are, you can't wake up and say, I think I'd like to be America's Biggest Bookfluencer, and whip out your Amex card and make it happen. You can't even take your Kardashian self and decide this is what you want and ask your assistant to set it up. This takes work and desire and passion, and we dig into how Zibby started, and how she made things take off.Links from the pod:Lee Carpenter: Red, White, Blue and ElevenAndre Agassi: OpenZibby BooksZibby Books Ambassadors (at bottom of Zibby Books page)#AmReadingZibby: Going There by Katie CouricHungry Hill by Eileen Patricia CurranThe Husbands by Chandler BakerThe Last Season by Jenny Judson & Danielle MahfoodKJ: A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. When Inner Dialogue Isn't "Telling" and When It Is in Memoir and Fiction

Hey writers—I'm in a funny phase of novel drafting right now where I'm really only doing the prewriting—which is an odd style of drafting wherein, for me, I basically write only dialogue and statements of movement and the very most important bits of inner dialogue. (As in, no one is opening car doors or setting down their coffee cups, and there are also no quotation marks, and they could be anywhere as far as setting is concerned.)Writing this way keeps my eyes on the prize—basically it's what do I need to know to really write this scene, which kind of tricks me into what does the reader really need to know. I'll add some of the set dressing later, but I find that when I write this way, the end result is tighter and cleaner. Here's an example I found that ultimately became Chapter 3 of Playing the Witch Card. It's actually pretty accurate:Flair is desperately shutting door on what she's done, locking up wildly as if she could lock it inside, back door, Josie never comes to front, running from a ghost, you know better than to make a joke like that in Rattleboro Well did you No Just of herself How was day Sucked Customers 2 if you count Loretta What did she want? She comes in all the time actuall and when she does it's usually a little better, I think it's all that Halloween horror That's what people are here for but then my customers all prefer the alley it's part of the mystique Yep those rebel tattoos that x percent of the population has But not you When I think of something I want tattooed on me you'll be the first to know Sometimes that's my job, do you want to know what tattoo you should have I do not. Stop it. Change subject Loretta wanted me to make Halloween cookies And I suppose you said no. you should. If anything would change your luck I kow you hate it. But I don't see how you're going to be here and not be part of it. Met by lucie on the doorstep. I'm going back to Chicago. What happened today Stupid Halloween, stupid party Parties are nothing but halloween's a big deal around here. Your mom just got asked to do something for the Rattlebones. Even lucie looked up at that Really? Everyone wants to do that, Annabel's always telling people that her mom practically runs it but I don't think she gets to be out there---could I help? She says she's not doing it I don't want to You have to I'll think about it If I can't do that for Halloween I want to go back to Chicago Not happening, we agreed, you're here until we both go visit at thanksgiving (and she was hopeing not to do that) I'll think about it I guess you're doing Halloween I hate you. I'm not. But she knew she would. There's actually zero interiority in here, which forced me to add it later but only where the dialogue didn't already convey it. Which leads me to today's replay, which is one I needed: what's the difference between showing—in internal dialogue—and telling? Bc we don't want to info dump, and yet also our characters need to reflect on their past or think things they don't say. This episode is me, Sarina and Jess talking about the difference. I hope it's as helpful to you as it was to me!Original show notesThe whole “am I showing, or am I telling” inner debate can be tough in every part of a novel, memoir or nonfiction-with-elements-of-memoir draft. You don't want to “tell” about the action. You don't want to “tell” about the setting. And goodness knows you don't want to “tell” what the character is feeling.Except when you do. Sometimes a little telling, in the form of inner dialogue, is exactly what the reader needs to feel a part of the story, not just the happenings. Sarina, Jess and KJ are all in for a conversation about how to immerse a reader in emotions, reactions, fears, self-doubt and even self-deception.Got an inner dialogue question you're wrestling with? Try sharing it in our Facebook group—and for other burning questions, small and large, email us at amwriting@substack.com. We can't respond to every email, but we might answer your question on an upcoming show—or even invite you on for a little coaching.Links and quotes from the pod:From In Her Boots:“Jasmine was still a little leery of the animals, so I set out to charm her with them. **Here's what my editor said here:  Maybe Rhett could think here about how the animals always made her feel good and she wants to impart some of that to Jasmine, who is stretching so far outside her comfort zone to help Rhett? This could be a nice friendship moment to show Rhett caring about Jasmine.** After we fed the entire crew—which would make any human popular—I gave Jas Brownie's curry comb and showed her the places where he loved to be scratched, and together we groomed the little pony to a sheen, Jas brushing while I pulled his mane and tail. Jas ran inside and emerged with a bandana that we tied in his forelock, giving him a rakish look suited to his personality, and at the same time we both pulled out our phones.”Here's the revision:“Some barn time would absolutely help me feel better. If Jas was a little more comfortable with them, I knew she would feel the same way, and I wanted that for her. I didn't care about the Maggie part of it. I'd overheard her on the phone with Zale last night, and I wanted her to know that the farm was a refuge for her no matter what. After we fed the entire crew—which would make any human popular—I gave Jas Brownie's curry comb and showed her the places where he loved to be scratched, and together we groomed the little pony to a sheen, Jas brushing while I pulled his mane and tail. Jas ran inside and emerged with a bandana that we tied in his forelock, giving him a rakish look suited to his personality, and at the same time we both pulled out our phones.”From We Are Not Like Them:p. 113 “I'm relieved to see that the crowd really is peaceful, so many faces filled with righteous conviction and purpose. Nonetheless, my cynicism kicks in. Ain't nothing changed but the music. All the clever signs and chants, the people who showed up just so they could post it to their social media, what does it add up to?”From Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake:p. 161 “She laughed and then hoped he'd meant her to.”p. 179 “Rosaline didn't want to jinx it, and possibly she was reading too much into one ambiguously encouraging look from Marianne Wolvercote, but she thought she could do okay this week. Possibly even well? After all, she had a strong concept. And the part of her that used to do homework under test conditions was now secretly rather glad to get to practice in an unfamiliar kitchen.”Also mentioned:Beach Read by Emily HenryTalia Hibbert#AmReadingJess: The Triumph of Seeds: How Grains, Nuts, Kernels, Pulses, and Pips Conquered the Plant Kingdom and Shaped Human History by Thor HansonKJ: We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride & Jo PiazzaSarina: The Enneagram in Love: A Roadmap for Building and Strengthening Romantic Relationships by Stephanie Barron HallIt's that time again! How to Restart Your Work after an Unplanned Pause

Ok, we probably don't feel as cheery as that little subtitle sounded after we've been away from a project for a while. Most of the things that yank us away from our work unexpectedly aren't good things. (There must be exceptions?)In my case, I got sick, and then I overdid and got sicker, and the result is a project I haven't touched in a week. Which is SO not that bad or that long—sometimes things happen and it's a month or more before we can get back into the work—but it made me think about what I do when I'm forced to stop and re-start. * Forgive yourself. Might you have been able to do better? Maybe. Would a real writer have managed to work through whatever it was? Maybe. And maybe, if you'd really had to, you would have. Or maybe not—sometimes even people with deadlines and editors and fans clamoring need to put their work aside for a while, because sometimes you just cannot. Or sometimes you do anyway, and maybe, as I once did, you turn in an article during one of the worst weeks of your life thus far and it includes a recipe for Miso Roasted Cod in which you forget to include the miso, which is published because apparently there were no backstops at this particular entity, thus ending your recipe writing career forevermore. (Obviously that worked out ok, but 21 years ago I would have told you my life was over.) Let it go. You needed time. You took it. It's for the best.* Check in. Is it really time to get back to this? Can you look ahead and see yourself getting back into whatever routine is in the cards for you now, or are you setting yourself up to disappoint yourself? Look, only you know. Some people write at the worst times. Some people wait for better times. Sometimes those are the same people at different points in their lives. It is okay to hunch over a laptop under circumstances when people think you should be doing something else, and it is okay to decide to re-read all of Anne of Green Gables even when the waters are calm again.* Do your commit-thing. If it's time and you're ready, do whatever you do when you start something. Tell a friend, tell the world, stick a post-it on your desktop, re-up your timer app on your phone, make a list or a plan or a mood board, make a promise, light a candle, stand outside and scream up at the clouds to tell them you're back in the game, babies!* Allow for some prep-time. Maybe you need to read over your project or your outline. (Or maybe you shouldn't, because going in an unexpected direction could be a great thing.) A thinking-walk or drive could be good, or a re-read of your favorite motivational or craft book, or even just a page of it. If you're a pre-writer, start there and let yourself hit a downhill before you start actually sticking in all the punctuation. * Start somewhere easy. Maybe that's right where you left off. Maybe it's a scene you've been writing in your head. Maybe it's the end or a new beginning. * Go all in. Once you open the file, stay in the file. You're out of practice. This will be harder than it was last time. Your text messages, your laundry, that annoyingly long pinkie nail, all will beckon. (Actually it's ok to go trim the nail. But you do NOT NEED YOUR PHONE to do that.) Set a timer, throw your phone across the room, handcuff yourself to your desk, do whatever you do. Maybe for a teeeeeny bit less time than usual. But do it. And then stop even if you're rolling. Every day this will get easier if you just do the thing. * You might need to go back and forgive yourself again. Maybe this is harder than you thought. Maybe it feels like you've lost the thread. Maybe you don't feel like you'll ever, every get it going. What would you say to a friend right now? Bet it's nicer than whatever you're saying to yourself. You will keep going. Be kind.* SAVE THIS POST. The time will come when you need it again. And so do I. It's that time again! Every year Jennie Nash and the Author Accelerator team put together a holiday bundle worth hundreds of dollars for folks who enroll in the Book Coach Certification Program ahead of the new year. Amanda Brooks, run coach, creator of Run to the Finish and author of the book Run to the Finish: The Everyday Runner's Guide to Avoiding Injury, Ignoring the Clock and Loving the Run shares why 10 years ago she made the life changing decision to shift from a journalism background and ecommerce to creating her Run to the Finish brand. She had already found a way to combine her love of research and running to find what worked best for her and to help others by developing her blog Run to the Finish (when blogging was the the thing to really get your brand out there). But while working full time and dedicating almost full time hours a week to Run to the Finish, Amanda found herself at a point where she needed to decide if this was where her career would take her. Amanda shares what that shift looked like for her. I was particularly excited to chat with Amanda because it was her out of the box "Couch to Marathon" plan that helped me return from a stress fracture in May and complete my first marathon this past November, and I do credit her 30 Day Core Challenge with keeping my ITB syndrome at bay for training. I just really really love how much Amanda loves running for the sake of running. She's turned it into a well-researched art that brings her joy and she shares that with her clients; there's not much better than that from your run coach. Bark Social is the first “dog bar” in the Mid-Atlantic region. It has a 25,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor craft beer, wine, and coffee bar and a professionally monitored (Bark Rangers) off-leash dog park. Bark Social is the culmination of more than two years of research and refinement from founders Luke Silverman and Jeff Kurtzman. Silverman, an entrepreneur and former reality TV producer with credits including American Idol and The Bachelor, and Kurtzman, a seasoned entrepreneur whose past experience includes co-founder of Better World Books and CEO of Aid Through Trade, both socially responsible ventures. More than a dog park, the year-round venue offers beer, wine, and coffee, small bites, a climate-controlled “clubhouse” with TVs and Wi-Fi, in addition to a “dog treat bar” (pupsicles and puppy ice cream), dog boutique, and dog wash stations. Bark Social has partnered with a local coffee roaster, Ceremony Coffee for the morning program, and will complement this with a rotation of local and national craft brews and wines for a “beer garden” like atmosphere in the afternoons and evenings. The Pike & Rose location will offer an array of events such as Doga (dog yoga), daily Yappy Hours, a Halloween dog costume contest, pictures with Santa, singles nights, and even dog birthday parties. Giving back to the local community and dog non-profits is a critical part of Bark Social’s mission. To honor its launch, Bark Social has launched a t-shirt fundraiser to support five local dog nonprofit organizations; Montgomery County Humane Society, Humane Rescue Alliance, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation, MCPAW, and one national organization, Tails of Valor Paws of Honor, a Veteran organization providing social interaction and human/canine bonding resulting in trained services dogs able to assist with the post-combat physical and psychological issues affecting Veterans and their families. Bark Social will donate $5 from each t-shirt sold to its non-profit partners.

The guest on today’s episode, Xavier Helgesen, explains to us just how he did that as the Co-founder of one of the first B Corporations, Better World Books. B Corps formally combine public interest goals with profit earning throughout their business model—other B Corps you may know include Patagonia and Tom’s Shoes. Xavier shares how Better World Books raised over $20 million dollars for global literacy and donated tens of millions of books, while also maintaining double digit growth 15 years in a row. The company’s rapid growth led them to take on investors and ultimately sell to a charity, which is unique in and of itself, but the charity also happened to be founded by the creator of Amazon’s Alexa. Today’s episode hits home the power of building a company while intentionally linking it to the life you want to live. The underlying values and mission of a business can range from charity work to financial stability, and Xavier emphasizes the added growth a business can experience by integrating that mission into the company’s cost and future plans. This conversation focuses on how to intentionally align a social cause with a company’s mission at each stage of starting, growing, and selling a business—it is an inspiring story of how a “conscious capitalism” oriented company proves that good business is not just good marketing. About the Guest: Xavier Helgesen is an entrepreneur, technologist, global citizen, and builder of world positive companies. He co-founded Better World Books, the first ever b-corporation. This is a slight diversion from the usual episode, but I know a lot of you are bookworms, like me. However, you might be finding it hard to read right now because you’re too stressed. Or you don’t want to read the same type of books. Or you’re having trouble getting books because you always relied on your local library, which is now shut down. So, I’m going to talk about all these things today, while also giving some book recommendations. I’m also going to talk about some non-fiction business books that have really helped me and my freelance business over the years. If you want to skip to just the business book recommendations, fast-forward to 29:00. I was in a bit of a book slump when the pandemic hit, so after reading one good book, I struggled to figure out what to read next. And while many of us might be struggling to read at times, turns out we’re buying a lot of books online. Let’s first talk about how you can access or buy books right now. First, audiobooks. The obvious place to start is Audible, which is Amazon’s audiobookstore. Audible offers the first month free for you to try it out. But I know many of you are anti-Amazon and would prefer to give your money to someone else. So, you might want to instead try Libro.FM, which allows you to buy audiobooks directly through your favorite independent bookstore. You can choose to buy audiobooks whenever you want or you can sign up for a monthly membership for about $15 a month. That gives you one audiobook a month, plus 30% off additional audiobooks. Libro’s profits are split with the indie bookstore of your choice. Get audiobooks from your local library through an app called Overdrive or an app called Libby, which is also by Overdrive. Now, let’s talk about buying books. Twitter pointed me to Better World Books, which is an online used bookstore that, turns out, is based in my home state of Indiana. Every time you buy a book, Better World Books donates a book to someone. The company also collects discarded books from libraries. Libraries need to get rid of books to make room for new ones, and sometimes these books end up in the landfills. But Better World Books takes in all those books, sells what they can and then donates a lot of them. And only then do they get rid of the rest—by recycling them. Better World Books right now is offering 20% off with free shipping if you have buy at least two books. I bought five books on my TBR list for $40 total. Another used book option is Half Price Books, which is a brick-and-mortar chain that sells mostly used books but also some new books. I bought four books from Half Price online as gifts for my parents. The store charged me for shipping for each book, which seemed strange even if it still wasn’t that expensive. But I soon realized it was because each book was pulled from whichever store had it in stock and shipped from that store. Next up, let’s support independent bookstores. I chose to buy two new books directly from Wild Geese Bookshop in my college town, Franklin, Indiana. Wild Geese is only a few years old. It opened in the fall of 2016. I heard about it through friends, and my mom and I checked it out a few years ago and instantly fell in love with this tiny, perfectly curated shop. Another way I could have bought from Wild Geese Bookshop or other indie bookstores is through a new website called Bookshop. At Bookshop.org you can buy books all in one spot but choose which independent bookstore the sale will benefit. Here’s how Bookshop works: Independent bookstores place affiliate links on their own websites, social media, e-newsletters, etc. For every book sold through that link, that bookstore receives 25% commission. Another way to find a good independent bookstore is through Indiebound.org, which also has the Indie Next List, a fun list of book recommendations from indie booksellers. Next up, my favorite book podcasts. My absolute favorite is What Should I Read Next by Anne Bogel, in which Anne asks a guest to talk about three books they love and one book they hate and what they would like to be different in their reading life. Then, she recommends three books to them on the spot. Other book podcasts that are new to me: All the Books! by Book Riot Currently Reading From the Front Porch And check out my friends at Writer’s Bone, where they interview authors about writing and their books. Book talks: A lot of book talks have now gone online, so it doesn’t matter where you live. Here in DC, Politics and Prose was known for having an author talk in the store every single night. Now, those talks are being streamed online. Other stores are doing the same. You can also check in with your favorite authors’ websites and social media accounts to see what they’re up to and where they might be streaming next. Anne Bogel did a Stay at Home Book Tour with several authors over the past few weeks via Zoom. All of these were recorded and you can watch them at your leisure.   Book recommendations: “The Splendid and the Vile,” by Erik Larson “The Glass Hotel,” by Emily St. John Mandel “Station Eleven,” by Emily St. John Mandel “The Resisters,” by Gish Jen “The Red Lotus,” by Chris Bohjalian “Still Life,” book 1 in the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny “The Widows of Malabar Hill” (book 1), by Sujata Massey “The Satapur Moonstone (book 2), by Sujata Massey “Murder on the Orient Express,” by Agatha Christie “And Then There Were None,” by Agatha Christie “Evvie Drake Starts Over,” by Linda Holmes “Daisy Jones & the Six,” by Taylor Jenkins Reid “Most Likely,” by Sarah Watson “The Freelance Content Marketing Writer,” by Jennifer Goforth Gregory “Atomic Habits,” by James Clear “Make Time,” by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky “Deep Work,” by Cal Newport “Digital Minimalism,” by Cal Newport Biz Bite: Take Your Office Outside   Resources: Book recommendations are all linked above. “Book sales surge as self-isolating readers stock up on ‘bucket list’ novels” “Books Are My Secret For Fighting Coronavirus Anxiety” “Overdrive vs. Libby: Which Will Serve You Best?” “How to Get Books When Bookstores and Libraries Are Closed” Episode #4 of Deliberate Freelancer: Work Only with Nice Clients, with Jennifer Goforth Gregory Audible Libro.FM Overdrive Libby Better World Books Half Price Books Politics and Prose (DC) Kramerbooks (DC) Loyalty Books (DC) The Strand (New York City) Powell’s City of Books (Portland, Oregon) Wild Geese Bookshop (Franklin, Indiana) Bookshop.org Indiebound.org What Should I Read Next? podcast All the Books! podcast by Book Riot Currently Reading podcast From the Front Porch podcast Writer’s Bone podcast Stay at Home Book Tour

This one is a RIDE, you guys! We wanted to do something really fun this week—something that would lighten the mood for us and for you. So, strap in, because we’re talking about our favorite Old School Category romances today! We’ve got something for everyone — wolves and dragons and marine biologists and single moms and more wolves! A word of caution this week — we didn’t reread these books before we recorded, and they’re all published in the 80s and 90s, so tread lightly if you decide to read them…and let us know just how wrong we got the plots! (Just kidding, we’re for sure rereading all of them now). Next week was supposed to be the deep dive of Lorraine Heath, but Sarah has a book due, so we’re putting it on hold—but stay tuned, because we’ve definitely got something coming! Waking Up With the Duke will definitely be the next read, though: Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo.Show Notes- If you're looking for a real cool summer sleepaway camp, check out Camp Kupagani. They'll pick your kid up at O'Hare!- You can order girl scout cookies online now. Good luck to all of us.- If you're in Chicago, I guess you could go to Navy Pier; But if you're in Peru, you should definitely go to Machu Picchu.- That American Dirt story is real wild. This review by Myriam Gurba is amazing, and Vox has you covered with an entire explainer. Remezcla has better recommendations for books about the border.- If you want to know what makes something a category romance, Love in Panels has a very good explainer. Also, if you're interested in Harlequin covers now, Jen interviewed Tony Horvath for Kirkus. He's the creative director in charge of all of Harlequin series romance.- Buying old category romances is easy. Check out ThriftBooks for the best prices and best shipping (Amazon charges for individual items from sellers), but also Better World Books. And if you're lucky enough, local thrift stores and used book stores. For more recent remaindered books, try Book Outlet.- We mentioned so many category series today. Check out this blog by Steve Imes with all the category series names and dates, and FictionDB for listings of books by series.- Sandra Brown wrote as Erin St. Claire and also Rachel Ryan. She was an 80s powerhouse who still writes romantic suspense. The book Sarah mentioned was Honor Bound, but Jen was thinking of a similar book called Hawk O'Toole's Hostage. Ope.- Jen reread and reviewed several of her first category romances for the Book Queen. The one about Pink Satin compares the book to the Harvey Weinstein case. It's honestly shocking how little has changed for women in the workplace.- White Satin was an early Iris Johansen about figure skating, but that author is also for being the book that inspired the "Who Did it Better on a Horse" post. And at the end of the episode, Sarah mentions that she had a house for sale if you're on the market, BECAUSE IT'S REALLY A MANSION.- Brad Pitt is old and still working because of the patriarchy.- Deep Tracks is the name of an XM radio station that plays B sides and less popular songs, which is very on brand for the books in this episode.- Maybe you'd like to read those goodreads reviews for The Lady and the Dragon.- Jen loved Barbara Boswell. She was a fan of the Brady/Ramsey series where a bunch of sisters married a bunch of brothers. And then this one that is Brady Bunch fanfic. Eight is enough, I swear! Was this all Roe v. Wade blowback?- You actually can still get Harlequin subscriptions, but the best current Romance subscription is definitely the Bawdy Bookworms box.- In Demon Lover, the heroine thinks the hero is a coyote, but he's really an undercover DEA agent. Jen asked the Smart Bitches to help her find it in 2018, when it was available as an eBook, but it isn't anymore! All you need to know is that these 80s covers celebrated the Tom Selleck mustache in a big way.- Warrior was last in the McKenzie-Blackthorn series by Elizabeth Lowell. Light a candle for Utah, who never got his book. Ao3 needs to get on it! #JusticeForUtah- Virginity is a construct! Also, here's where the hymen is in case you need to know.- Sarah's on deadline, so who knows what's going to happen next week. Buy some stickers, buttons, or t-shirts to tide yourself over while we figure it out.- Please check out the photo array below for books we referenced. You may remember that we recorded an entire episode on category romances with Andie Christopher, but Jen screwed up the recording. By then, we moved on with Andie to cinnamon rolls. But Andie recommended Driven by Fate by Tessa Bailey, and Jen talked about Every Road to You by Phyllis Bourne. Sarah proably talked about Hot Touch, but Jen can't really remember...we'll just think of that episode as the one that got away.

He's not on a mission to make money, quite the opposite. Xavier Helgesen is a mission driven founder, who uses money to do more good in the world. His first company, Better World Books sells 10 million used books a year that's collected by leftover books at libraries - in and shares revenues with literacy partners (Over $25M given to non-profits). This business lead him to Africa, where he noticed 20,000 people in a village had no electricity - so he decided to change that. He created Zola Electric, the largest solar power company in Africa, providing 1 million people with electricity per day. He talks to us about how he turned his college side hustle into a $70M biz, moving next to his customers in Tanzania, selling electricity to people who never used electricity and how ‘Mutual Improvement Societies’ could help you 10x your life. Welcome to episode 42 of ATG: The Podcast. For readers of Against the Grain, our guest this week will be familiar from her long-time contributions to the “Copyright Questions and Answers” column. Laura N. “Lolly” Gasaway is the Paul B. Eaton Distinguished Professor of Law Emerita of UNC Chapel Hill. This week, she’s reading her column from the February 2016 issue of Against the Grain, v28 #1. As always, Lolly answers many intriguing questions. Included are questions sent in from an academic librarian, a public librarian, an elementary school teacher and more. But first, a few announcements. When this podcast is aired on Monday, November 6, it will be the start of the Charleston Conference week! We’re looking forward to seeing all of our attendees, presenters, sponsors, and exhibitors there. Please check in upon arrival to receive your name badge and attendee materials. Name badges will be required for entry into conference venues, the reception, and conference shuttles. The registration check-in desk will be located in the upper lobby of the Francis Marion Hotel at 387 King Street. Hours are posted on the conference website at the link provided in the show notes. The 2017 Conference Reception, sponsored by Elsevier, will be held on Wednesday, November 8, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the SC Aquarium. Shuttle transportation will be available from the Francis Marion Hotel to the aquarium. The entire aquarium, plus the Shark Shallows touch tank outside on the deck, will be open for attendees to visit. Delicious Lowcountry specialties, like shrimp and grits, as well as more traditional reception fare will be served and beer, wine and soft drinks will be available at the bar. Live musical entertainment will be provided by The Soulfeathers. Side note – the awesome guy on drums is my brother! We’ll also have a photo booth, sponsored by Duke University Press, to take pictures with fun and goofy props. Conducting a Conference takes a lot of dedication, time, and assistance from a lot of people. It also takes money. The Charleston Conference would like to thank all of our sponsors that made generous contributions: Adam Matthew, American Mathematical Society, Better World Books, Cambridge University Press, Canadian Science Publishing, CHOICE, Clarivate Analytics, Credo Reference, Duke University Press, EBSCO Information Services, Elsevier, Gale, a Cengage Company, HighWire Press, IGI Global, IOP Publishing, MDPI, the OECD, Oxford University Press, ProQuest, Rittenhouse, SAGE Publishing, Springer Nature, the Society for Scholarly Publishing, Taylor & Francis Group, University of Hawaii Press, the Wall Street Journal, and Yewno. Please thank their representatives when you see them! --------------------------- And now, a few updates to the “If Rumors Were Horses” column from Katina Strauch. I hope that you have all heard that Leah Hinds has been appointed Executive Director of the Charleston Conference! Leah is tireless and deserves all the recognition we can give her! Look at all the new initiatives that have begun with ATG and ATG media! Speaking of which there was a free webinar on Wednesday -- Charleston Library Conference Tips and Tricks for Attending. Heather Staines and Leah organized it and many of the Charleston Conference regulars will be on the webinar. Here is a link to it for your use! It will be available on the Conference website as of Thursday November 2. https://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/video/webinars See the Charleston Conference November print issue (v.29#5, p.85) of ATG for a picture of the awesome (we used to call him “the nemesis” in earlier ATGs) Chuck Hamaker who has retired from UNC-Charlotte. Chuck is pictured with his Emeritus certificate from UNC-C. What a career Chuck has had. He will be presenting at the Charlotte Initiative Symposium on Monday afternoon. 2017charlestonconference.sched.org/ If you haven’t encountered Carol Apollo you need to! Carol and Leah met when they were neighbors in Gilbert, SC. Carol is a Social Media Manager and Strategist who believes that a good social media campaign has the power to change the world. She has worked mostly with non-profit and volunteer organizations to optimize their Internet presence and engage their audience and has been working with Against the Grain Media for the past 6 months. Carol’s podcast on social media for libraries is available on the ATG newschannel. Carol has moved back up north but she will be in Charleston helping with the podcast at the Conference in the Gaillard Center lobby - recording takeaways and comments from attendees. She will also be helping with the Speed networking during the poster sessions at the Conference http://atgthepodcast.libsyn.com/podcast/atgthepodcast-039-libraries-and-social-media-with-carol-apollo Speaking of the Poster sessions, Tom Gilson has worked diligently with Jesse Lamarre of Morressier Gmbh in Berlin. Thank also to Sven Fund for hooking us up with Morressier and to John Williams who has worked with Tom and Jesse to make the virtual posters a reality. Hope that you all like them! There will be 37 Virtual posters in Charleston this year! jesse.lamarre@morressier.com www.morressier.com Fast Pitch finalists have been selected and we're in the process of coaching. Be sure to come and vote for our favorite at the session on Wed 11/8 at 4:40 PM.  Glenda Alvin is introducing Loretta Parham, one of our keynote speakers at the Conference. Glanda was reminiscing about African American Librarians attending the Conference. Many of them have retired and we are searching for more to take up the mantle! Be sure and meet Aaisha Haykal, manager of archives at the Avery Center for Research in African American History, who is attending this year! We told you in the print November ATG that Franny Lee is now VP of Product Development at Chegg, a publicly-traded company with a learning platform and product lines that include textbook rental, tutoring services, test pre, etc. Tom Gilson had a Penthouse Interview scheduled with Franny during the Charleston Conference but we have just learned that Franny is not able to come to Charleston because of a medical procedure. www.chegg.com/ I was poking around the ATG newschannel and learned that Napoleon was a bibliophile! He traveled with a library of miniature books and was a voracious reader. This was John Riley’s ATG Quirky ATG Quirkies: Napoleon’s Kindle on October 25. I seem to remember that Elisabeth Chapman was a collector of miniature books. Liz is retired but I’ll bet she is still collecting miniature books! Returning to John Riley! He will NOT be in Charleston this year because he is running for political office! Mayor of Northampton! That's the good news. The bad news is that he will have to miss his first Charleston Conference in 32 years! With the election being held on November 7 he just can't break away on time. Speaking of the 37th Charleston Conference! I am looking forward to it! I am not the spring chicken that I once was so I am having trouble getting around! BUT I WANT very much to meet all of you so please come up and interrupt me and let’s talk! Thanks and much love always, Katina Yr Ed.

Robert Rulon-Miller is an antiquarian book dealer who lives, if not in a mansion, then at the very least in a great big house on Summit Avenue, one of the toniest in St. Paul, Minnesota. Not that toiling as a bookseller is anyway to get rich quick. He has worked hard for many years in the business, specializing in 'Rare, Fine & Interesting Books in Many Fields; 1st Editions, Americana; Literature; Fine & Early Printing; Travel; and the History of Language.' His most recent catalogue is titled Language and Learning. Robert is also the Director of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar scheduled for August 2nd-7th, 2009, at Colorado College, Colorado Springs, immediately following the Denver Antiquarian Book Fair. We met at his home to talk books. Topics covered include de-accessioning, railway and mining tycoon James J. Hill, Robert's friendship with Elmer Anderson, book collector and Governor of Minnesota; Robert's interest in words and language, his expertise in dictionaries and grammars, and lack of interest in Dr. Johnson's Dictionary, Better World Books's business model, partnering to buy and sell expensive books, and advice for the novice bookseller.
