Today we will be looking at regret no 3 that people expresson their death bed, “I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings”.As children it was easy to express our feelings. We hated, we loved, we laughed, we cried, authentically andwith no need to analyse or suppress. So what happened since then? What made us change and suppress our feelings until webecame unaware of them? The seeds started in thinking that feelings were wrong, all ofwhich have been put in our heads at a young age. When you child says, “I hate you”, try to be the adult in the room. The healthy way to be close to feelings is to have permission to express them.Children who grow up knowing they are loved, no matter what, find it easier to develop relationships with their feelings. When they become adults, they have skills to be in touch with their feelings; they find it naturally to love and be loved. This transfers to their relationship in adulthood. It helps them develop the language of the heart, which is so important in a world that sent the heart- language to the underground. When we can acknowledge our feeling, we get many insights. Instead of blaming others for what we feel, we can be kind toourselves with what we feel. When people push our buttons, it could be an invitation togo deeper within ourselves. We can learn about ourselves from the way we feel towards other people. Please don't die before giving yourself permission toexpress your feelings. It's free, and it can be done in a respectful way. People around you will be inspired to do the same. When the heart is light, there's more space to love and beloved. In episode #105 we talked about the first regret people express when they reach end of life. Today we will look at the second one, “I wish I hadn't worked so hard.”It's not as simple as it might sound. What is it that people feel they missed by spending too much time at work?Do they refer to relationships? To friendships? To hobbies? I'm inviting you to reflect with me. At the beginning of the school year, we are invited to reflect on the year ahead of us. How and what we'd like this year to be. The commitment list is long; the rewards list is much longer. We all have regrets. They become vivid and clear towards the end of life and / or when we are ready to look at them. Regrets can haunt and torture us, and they can also help us contemplate our present and future, and adjust our life accordingly. Today we will reflect on the first one in the list : ‘I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.' I'm back from Asia Suzuki Conference in Korea, with hope and inspiration. I saw children making music together and connecting through music. Parents connecting around music, and teacher sharing ideas. A community of music that is the antidote to the pandemic of loneliness. Listen, and be inspired to see how music could change the world. How many times did you hear people saying it? In this episode we will look at why people tend to think they can't sing, and by that they deprive themselves of the innate gift we are all born with. Music is the birthright of every human being. You don't have to learn music to enjoy its gift. Can you imagine a world without music? Why is singing so important and what we get from it. Could you dare not being concerned about how you sound, and instead connect to how you feel when you sing? Singing along is a great way to connect. How we can use humour and play to take away the fear of singing. Please sing to your children and grandchildren and let children grow in an environment that sings. I didn't plan to dedicate this episode to the topic of pain, but it came of its own will, asking to give it a voice. Experiencing a severe pain in the last few weeks, I'm learning that pain is a part of life; like grief. Pain is teaching me: To learn to ask for help To lower my standards (of cleaning and similar work) To rest between jobs To remember who I am (I'm not pain) To say ‘no' to more commitments, activities or socialising To communicate with pain To Stop - Slow down – Allow To expand the good moments How can I navigate periods of pain while taking out of the equation the fear factor. How to not project to the future, the past and on. other people, and instead hold the here and now. When we are young, we are occupied with the future. When we are old, the future gets shorter. The line from youth to eldership: in youth we wait and prepare for the future. In elderhood we are afraid of the future. How can we make life, as long as we are in it and it is in us – fulfilling and meaningful. Pain could be a potential to unravel a mystery. Today I'm in conversation with Heike Hamann. Heike was born in Tanzania, East Africa to German parents, and lived in England, Papua New Guinea and Germany before moving to Australia as a teenager. She is currently the custodian of a beautiful property in Tyagarah, in the Northern Rivers, surrounded by nature and close to the ocean. Heike has been sailing, running, bushwalking and paragliding to name but a few of her sporting activities, and has represented Australia as a runner and paragliding pilot. She graduated from the Process Work Institute in Portland Oregon with two Process Oriented Psychology Masters, and works in private practice as a psychotherapist. She is constantly astounded and amazed by the magic and deep transformation that happens when people's processes are lovingly and attentively followed, and the depth of wisdom that each of us has, is accessed. Connection is important to Heike. Connection to the Divine, to Herself and herself, to Nature, to her partner, friends and family and to community. These days she loves having spaciousness in her life, which facilitates this connection. She loves sailing with hump back whales – so much so that she bought herself a boat late last year and has been living and sailing on it along the east coast of Australia and Tasmania for the last 12 months. The journey has helped her grow more and more into a place of trusting Life, and the feeling of being held and loved unconditionally (by Below and Above, – aka Mother Earth and the Divine). We talked about three levels of reality; working with pain and body symptoms; the impact of living in many places on the making of a person; belonging; slowing down; loneliness; inner knowing and her very special encounter with whales. Let's ask ourselves some questions about the usage of smart phones around our children. What can we do for the welfare of our children? (Not just our children). I'm inviting you to reflect together and alone,to check WHAT you can do to change, IF you want to change. The damage that these little devices cause is beyond argument. And there are gifts that one generation could give to the other. We are looking here at a small tiny step we can all do. On “good” addictions and “bad” addictions and how to distinguish between them. Loneliness has become a new pandemic. We live in an age of communication and we are lonely... Loneliness and aloneness are not the same thing. You can feel lonely among people, and not lonely when you are alone. Some people need more socialising, others less. Some people like being alone, others resent it. The loneliness that comes from not being seen by others is the one I'm referring to here. When you are not seen by the people around you, you try to behave like someone else, which enhances your pain. From time to time we need to be with other people, and we need to be seen. I'd like to tell you about my soul family. How we connect on a soul level and create a container that goes beyond countries and continents, and by doing so, we come home to ourselves. When we are seen we feel loved. How can we help our children get motivated to learn. When we learn something in a pleasant way we are motivated to continue learning it. In Suzuki Talent Education we start by creating the environment for the child to want to learn an instrument. We want them to become self-motivated, to have the desire to move to the next step and acquire an ability. We want to help them develop self- discipline, so they could use these tools for life. How do you pass on to your child the love of music. The way you approach the practice will be the way your child approaches it.You plant the seed and wait for the mystery to unfold, and all the while you keep the big picture in mind. Education is everything. The aim in Suzuki Talent Education is not to raise great musicians but to nurture and foster all children to become NOBLE human beings. We do it THROUGH music development. However, it doesn't mean that music development and creating musical ability (= talent) becomes less important. In other words, we put every effort into music education, knowing that the outcome will be a full human potential, while investing in character building. We work as a team, parents and teachers together in serving the well-being of our children. Our aim is to help each child to become a better human being, in a world that makes the task more and more challenging. Let's delve into it in this episode. Very often I feel that words cannot convey what I want to express. (Maybe that's why music plays such an important part in my life.) At the same times, I love words. I love flirting with them, trying, experimenting. I will frequently change them like loved clothes. Sometimes I'd make them up… Do you sometimes find yourself with this niggling feeling. Of the sort that you are not sure how to describe it even to yourself. It's there, and its arrival seems to happen without any particular reason. The feeling I'm referring to has a flavour of longing. Longing for something you might even not know what it is. The reaction to this kind of feeling varies from one to the other. Some would choose an activity to get away from it. Some will eat, and then eat more... Or smoke…. drink…. It can be a very unpleasant feeling, something to run away from . If we could choose what feeling to invite , most likely this feeling would not appear in our guest list. The word for it is: Sehnsucht. Life longing. Defined as intense desires for ideal states of life that are remote or unattainable. Longing that combines reflections and evaluations about the past, present, and future. A search for meaning. Today we'll explore Sehnsucht: An Unexplainable Yearning. You have made a decision to give your child the opportunity to learn an instrument in the Suzuki way. You read articles and books on the Suzuki philosophy. You attended parent lectures. You started your listening routine (hopefully) and observed weekly lessons for some time. Some things spoke to you straight away. With other things you chose to make the time to absorb. Some things created disagreement or maybe even resentment. But overall, you decided to go on with it. Thus, you started lessons and all went well. After a while the novelty started to wear. You noticed that your child is not progressing like other children you meet in the studio and workshops. You were getting tired of asking your child to come to practice. You were not so sure if your child has “musical talent”. You started doubting. It's a bit like falling in & out of love. In this episode we'll talk about what to do when it happens. How to get the most out of it. My soul practice is where I turn up to myself, to my soul. It is a version of my raft in life. It is a practice that doesn't have a goal apart from doing it. Life at times is complicated and challenging. These times require of us to find islands of sanity; pockets of refuge; coming home to ourselves. What are these pockets of sanity? When the future seems grim, is there a way we can make the present moment more friendly? As a matter of fact, the future is always a mystery. Even when we think we know what's about to come. I create these pockets of sanity by: · Listening to music. · Reading poetry · Letting my fingers lead themselves on the piano · Listening to Indian chants · Watching my breath · Listening to my heart beat · Moving s l o w l y ·Sitting in the place of awe I don't DO any of the above. I'm letting it be done. I smile to the thought that say “later on …”and send them away to come later. I do it in a loving manner. Do we need to get old to allow this to happen in our lives? The Suzuki philosophy and method is a holistic way of treating every child as a unique human being. Every child is unique. Every human being is unique. This uniqueness is becoming hidden sometimes when we grow up. How would the world be If we treat everyone as a unique human being. From an early stage we can see what are the gifts and tendencies of every child. We could then, nurture them towards it. This is how we raise happy children. Happiness is living your purpose. In Suzuki way we nurture children to become happy human being and we do it through music. Music is the raft to develop a beautiful heart. Parents can learn to discover their children's uniqueness through the Suzuki way. To observe their children and foster them to become their uniqueness. :::::::::::::::::::: If you like this podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. On child's time, adult's time, each person's unique time; this time that invites awe, creativity and imagination. We often say and hear: “Time is precious”. The question is what and how much we do to treat it this way. Do you allow time to wonder, time to respect your inner child Is distraction always bad? Pushing children to always go beyond their natural pace could shorten childhood and the magic it contains. Can you create space in your everyday life to experience awe? To breath magic? And can you expand your heart to feel it? :::::::::::::::::::: If you like this podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. Today I'm answering questions asked by a teacher, a parent and a student. The teacher asked: what could I do with a parent who constantly tries to teach me what to teach in the lesson? The parent asked :how can I make sure that my child practices everything the teacher assigned us to do? The student writes :I really love my cello and I love playing it. But I don't like 1. Yesterday I was talking to a dear friend. She celebrated her 80th a while ago. A wise, talented, intelligent woman. A woman that you'd feel privileged to include in your circle of friends. She apologised for wearing a sleeveless top. It's too hot, she said. I asked why is she apologising, and she said ,she can't show her arms “like that”. She meant flabby arms. It made me sad. Women of this calibre need to hide something that has to do with their appearance because it's not up to the public standard? What is this standard? I wanted to shout. Something that looks like a young arm? Is there an age limit or body appearance limit, that women are allowed to show in public, and hide the rest? And who decides what this limit is ? A panel of young people? Or maybe Children? Or elders who feel they need to apologise for looking their age ? Society in its best is made of all ages. From babies to old people. Each one in its development stage is contributing to the whole. Everyone is needed. Every one of us is a colour or a shade in a rainbow of human existence. You were young once, and then you grew into an adult and after that you grew old. Do you need to apologise for this? Do you need to cover it up? Do you need to be approved for the way you look? This phenomenon of anti-ageing, what is it about? Why are we trying to get rid of ageing? Why are we fighting it? We want to age without ageing. We want to age pretending we are still young. Why not embracing the process of ageing? Society will change their attitude towards old age, when elders will change their attitude towards themselves. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. In the first stages of my grief I made a decision to experience it all; every emotion and feeling that came in the package of grief and loss. I didn't want to run away from it. Something in me knew that if I ran away, this monster will catch me at some point in the future. I knew it was unavoidable. I sort of knew, that I'd rather experience it in real time, while it's there, fresh… raw… cruel… fierce…uncompromising…. So, I made a place and space for grief, for pain. for cry, for anger and disbelief. Now, from a vintage point of 2 yrs. + 7 months I can see that among the parts that make who I am, there was a wise old woman who knew how to guide all the other parts. And while I was “away” crying the pain of a lost child, moaning the agony of the maiden, wailing the woman who lost her lover, and lamented the woman who wanted to get old side by side with her beloved, she – the wise old one – was holding me in her arms, waiting with love and permission to feel it all. As long as it takes... She knew... She who knows. We are brought up to believe that life is made of right or wrong, good or bad, ugly or beautiful, black or white. And if so – there's grief or love, sorrow or joy. So, in order to live “normal” life you have to “move on from grief”. These are WRONG messages. They have nothing to do with the real raw experience of grief. I discovered that love and grief are not either or. They are inseparable. A few days ago, on our 50th anniversary day,I renewed my vow. My vow to love with all my heart. To live my life from the heart. With the heart. And for the heart. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. Let's talk about competition When we look at competition and its meaning, we come across words like: · Scarcity mentality · Defeating · Superiority · Supremacy · Opposition We are conditioned to compare and compete. We are raised to be individualistic. The downside of competition is that we don't compete WITH someone. We compete AGAINST someone. When it comes to ART, can you judge art? can you judge beauty? Competition ignores the history and the story of a person. Children's competition is my main concern. What message we give children by sending them to competitions? And there's another side to the question of competition: Wanting to be like somebody else could hint towards your golden shadow. Deep inside, you might have a talent that hasn't had its chance to reveal itself. Your desire to have what another person is having ,might be a projection of a hidden talent you possess. This is how competition could turn into inspiration. And then there's competing with our selves, which is a different aspect of competition. You can strive to do better every day, and thus you can develop, expand, grow and explore more of who and what you are. * * * * * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. Seeing people around me glued to their telephones prompted me to think about communication and connection. Communication and connection are not the same. Communication is the first step but not the last. Most of us today suffer today from lack of connection. Music connects. Making music connects us with our hearts. Playing with others connects us to ourselves and to each other. You don't have to be professional players in order to do it; you don't even need to play well... We need to develop the awareness to the way we use devices and screens. If we connect to each other at least as much as we connect to our devices, we'd be happier. A short moment of connection creates a huge change in people's hearts and brains. * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. As the year draws to an end, many people are doing their new year resolution. This invited me to ponder on the topic. New year resolution is a plan; a decision we take about the coming year; a commitment. It is a plan. So, what happens when something goes out of the plan? What do we do when we didn't do what we had planned or promised to do? And are we always trying to “fix' ourselves in these new year resolutions?
How many times have you heard the above statement, when you invited your child to do her/his practice? I bet more than once. “Every child loves to play, but most children don't like to practice.” Haruko Kataoka There are many reasons why children don't want to practice; some of them we might be able to change. We'll explore some of them in this episode. I truly believe that when parents pay attention to these points, their children become more willing to do the work. I've seen it time and time again throughout my years of teaching. * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. “We should say to children: You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the world, there is no other child exactly like you ... You have the capacity for anything... You must cherish one another. We must all work to make this world worthy of its children." (Pablo Casals) We all need to be seen. We can't live in a vacuum. We need to feel we are on the right track especially when we step into unfamiliar territory. At any age, we need to know we are witnessed and noticed. Listening empowers both the listener and the person who is listened to. Listening and hearing are two different things. In Hellen Keller's words: “Everybody talks. Nobody listens. When we are children we want to be grown-ups.As we grow up /old, things change. What is your association with the process of ageing? How do feel about getting old? What baggage do you take with you to old age?As a society we run away from the process of getting old and consequently miss out on the GIFT OF ELDERHOOD.To age can be experienced as a privilege. There's beauty in every age; we only need to develop the eyes to see it. Listening is one of the most important components in Suzuki Talent Education program. Even if it seems to be the easiest task, it's too often neglected. Why is listening so important? And why we neglect it so often? Are you convinced that listening is important? Have you created a habit of listening? How much listening should we do? How should we listen? When should we listen? Which recording should you listen to? What device should you use? Do or don't we listen enough? How to make listening a habit? All of these and more in this episode of “But first comes the listening”. * * * * If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave a comment and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. Life gives us lemons, and sometimes life gives us pearls. Things in life go in pairs: love and grief, light and dark, gain and loss etc. It's only natural that we prefer the “good” side. When we go through difficult times, we tend to not show our sadness. We prefer instead to go to our cave. In the past we used to be surrounded by a tribe that supported us in times like these. Now we more often find ourselves lonely. The cave turns out to be a cage . How can we help people who go through hardships ,without trying to fix it for them? We can always offer our PRESENCE. We can simply be there for them. In our presence we don't have to DO anything. Being present heals us and them at the same time. ( And watch for where you put your telephone when you meet a friend...Hopefully in your bag and not on the table). Be gentle with offering help ( especially when not asked,) and be generous with offering your presence. Since I remember myself, I wanted to be a mother and a teacher. These two topics are very close to my heart – motherhood and education. I was asked a question : “ How can we help our children today?”. To raise children in today's world is a mammoth task. Maybe more than ever. Shinichi Suzuki's words: “ Where love is deep, much can be achieved” echoes in our heart, but we need to add to love more things. What is the essence of education? We will continue to explore these questions in future episodes. In this episode we'll talk about listening. In Suzuki Talent Education, listening comes before practice. It's the core of learning a mother tongue. The question of how to establish listening habit has been asked through many years of teaching. Working in a team of parents - teachers is necessary. Many children suffer from having too many activities. “Keeping children busy” has become a norm. Children have their own pace and need to have time for thinking, for day dreaming, for wonder. Helping children develop concentration is crucial. “If children are trained with concentration in a single area for two or three years, their ability will startle their parents and others around. If we first help them develop outstanding ability in one area, we ought to know that children can use that ability to absorb other things easily.” - Shinichi Suzuki :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: If you like the podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave comments and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and /or join our list to get notified when a new episode is on air. Everyone has been or will be visited by death and grief at some point. We go through this experience in different ways. We ignore, we deny, we avoid. We might even not do it deliberately. We grieve differently and at the same time there are common feeling and experiences we go through. Participating in a seminar about the future of death and dying, recently, made me realise the richness of this topic. It's a topic that embraces many things. In a mysterious way it makes my reach a depth it hasn't been there before. Death brings grief. And grief deserves to be treated with respect. Grief is both personal and universal . It's a personal and collective experience at the same time. I'd like to see our society becoming more open to talk about death. Death education very is needed in our society. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: If you like this podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave comments and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and help us reach to wherever it's needed. Changes in the world and life will continue to occur and accelerate. Since it is difficult to keep up with the pace of change, it might be a good idea to re-evaluate and learn what is important to keep and what we could let go of. Meeting children and parents in different countries, re- informed and confirmed for me the important things in life. How can we get “education changed from mere instruction to education in the real sense of the word. “(Shinichi Suzuki) Educating the heart and soul of a child, of all children in the world, through music. In these changing times, we need to ask ourselves: - What are the things that are beyond fad? - What are the values that humanity could not survive without them? - What is in the core of being human? Children and adults alike, cannot live without love. The need to love and be loved is existential. Children love to learn; this too is an existential need. In order to survive we need to learn. All of us feel loved when we are seen and listened to. How can we give more by doing less. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: If you like this podcast, please subscribe to it, share it with your friends, leave comments and rating in Apple podcast (or wherever you get your podcast) and help us reach to wherever it's needed.
