With his height, flowing blond hair and most often being barefoot, Dennis Shives is among the most singular, and representative, of Ojai's citizens. Ojai born and raised, Dennis has made his living as an artist - both musician and visual artist - ever since. He claims inspiration from his grandmother, who taught art until age 91. His career was honored with a very memorable retrospective of his seven decades in art at the Ojai Valley Museum in 2017. (See Mark Lewis article, OQ Fall 2017). His life may be his greatest work of art. He's worked with sculpture, silver and gold smithing, painting and "whatever else intrigued him," according to the feature, including memorable 4th of July parade floats. His most recent project was to recreate the solar system for Earth Day celebrations, with schoolchildren acting out the part of the planets, asteroids, comets and sun. We talked about Ojai's essential identity as a haven for experimentation and discovery, making a living as an artist, his lifelong fascination with bears and the changes that have overtaken Ojai in the past few years. We did not talk about Major League Baseball's new rules, the expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen or the famous yellow ceramic glaze of Otto Heino. Check out Dennis' work at DennisShivesArt.wordpress.com.
The 2024 Republican presidential primary is off to a bit of a slow start. Donald Trump and former governors Nikki Haley and Asa Hutchinson have entered the race, but other likely candidates, such as Ron DeSantis and Mike Pence, are still sitting on the sidelines. Almost every Republican senator who flirted with the idea seems likely to pass, with the notable exception of Tim Scott, who's been making stops in Iowa and New Hampshire. Into this vacuum has come Vivek Ramaswamy, who stated his intentions in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. He declared that he was running to forge “an inspiring national identity that dilutes the woke agenda to irrelevance.” In a subsequent interview with POLITICO's Daniel Lippman, Vivek added that, “The GOP has a historic opportunity to answer the question of what it means to be an American.” You probably don't know much about Vivek Ramaswamy – he's a young entrepreneur from Ohio who's never run for anything. But there are a few reasons to keep an eye on him: 1. He says he's willing to spend millions of dollars of an estimated half-billion dollar fortune on the race 2. He's a regular presence on the Fox News Channel, which is the top information source for Republican primary voters 3. And he seems to be putting together a serious campaign made up of political pros Vivek swears he has a plan to break out of the single digits and take down Donald Trump. On this episode of Playbook Deep Dive, Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza joins Vivek at the restaurant Art & Soul to learn whether he is completely delusional — or whether he just might be onto something. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Vivek Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur and Republican presidential contender. Afra Abdullah is an associate producer for POLITICO audio. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio. Jenny Ament is the executive producer for POLITICO audio.

Lisa is a Certified Therapeutic Art Life Coach, Artist, and Entrepreneur. She has spent the past 20+ years designing and directing businesses as a Graphic Artist and Creative Consultant. As a graphic designer, she designed everything logos to dumpster wraps. There were bus panels, billboards, minted medals, and annual reports. She has had her artwork in the United Nations along with several private galleries. Lisa has won design awards such as the ADDY and in (2018) received the Helmsman Award from the Minneapolis Aquatennial for her work on their annual publication. Lisa lives an authentically creative lifestyle with a business mindset. Her favorite things are chocolate, coffee, reading, drawing, nature, walks with her husband and daughter; time shared with those she cares about most. How taking time to create (in any form) but especially using art techniques and methods allows a person to reconnect with their true center and find peace within themselves. It isn't just about the woo-hoo feeling, but a process that actually has been proven to help people discover pieces of themselves that have forgotten or never truly realized. They can uncover limiting beliefs and find a new way to live life through the process of making things such as mandalas, doodling, and free writing. I believe this kind of self-care is a new essential for the workforce, especially when more and more people are working from home, it provides even more challenges to staying balances between work and life. My secret sauce - having fun and listening. Offering a safe place where people can come and learn about themselves through art. I believe everyone can benefit from the process of art-making, regardless of their perceived skill level. Self-love is allowing yourself to take the time to do the things that most align with your true self. Self-love is knowing exactly who you are and what lights you up before you go out and serve others or interact with the world around you. Self-love is knowing what your boundaries are in relationships, whether it is for work or play. CONNECT WITH LISA https://artsoulliving.com/

Black history needs to be celebrated all year long, but Black History Month is an apt time to give flowers to our giants whose talents and contributions often go overlooked. This week on the podcast we're uplifting some of the unsung living legends of today. We sing singer-songwriter extraordinaire Jazmine Sullivan's praises, shine a light on Black artist and scholar David Driskell and give props to Hollywood veteran Vivica A. Fox.Later in the episode, Producer Felicia D. Henderson sits down with HuffPost senior enterprise editor Erin E. Evans to talk about her career journey. Henderson has worked on “Moesha,” “Soul Food,” “Sister, Sister,” “Family Matters” and other TV shows. While Henderson has helped break the mold of how Black stories are told on television, she tells Evans that her work breaking down boundaries wasn't planned, but a result of her following her “creative curiosity.”And That's That! This episode is dedicated to Mark's favourite artist: Vincent van Gogh - who he was, what he was, the incredible art that he created, the profound gift that he had as an artist, and how he was able to see and highlight the beauty and the poetry of nature and the universe like nobody else before or since has been able to. Mark talks about the legacy of Vincent van Gogh's art and how he has inspired and given so much joy to countless people from all around the world since his tragic death. Mark talks about the new 'Van Gogh Alive: The Experience' exhibition that he attended recently, and he explains the format and the setting of this incredible exhibition that celebrates Vincent van Gogh's life and his artwork. Mark recites a poem that he wrote which is dedicated to Vincent van Gogh, called "Vincent". Mark recites his poem "Art & Soul" which highlights what art means to him. And Mark recites his poem "Fire-starters" which is about the fact that there have always been artists of all mediums who have created art that has had a profound effect on people and who have influenced the world through their art, but who unfortunately died too young to see the full-effect of their artistic influence and the legacy that they left behind. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
