On this NBN podcast, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with acclaimed author Ayelet Tsabari about gorgeous debut novel, Songs for the Broken Hearted (Random House, September 10, 2024). Many people know of Ayelet from her memoir in essays The Art of Leaving, winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Awards, a finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction, and The Vine Awards for Canadian Jewish Literature, and an Apple Books and Kirkus Review Best Book of 2019. Songs for the Broken Hearted tells the story of a young Yemeni Israeli woman who learns of her mother's secret romance in a dramatic journey through lost family stories, revealing the unbreakable bond between a mother and a daughter. This is a salient exploration of the cost of secrets and the power of women's voices. "In her new novel, Ayelet Tsabari's craft is at its apex. Her characters are alive, the story skillfully structured, and the tragic, hidden history of Yemenite Jews expertly woven into the lives of people you will laugh with and shed tears for. To read this book is also to encounter an Israel and Palestine few of us are familiar with nowadays; when words like “peace” and “hope” were common, and nuance and complexity possible. A love song for a time long past, overflowing with emotional intelligence and psychological insight, Songs for the Brokenhearted will break your heart." — Jonathan Garfinkel, author of In a Land without Dogs the Cats Learn to Bark and Ambivalence More about Songs for the Broken Hearted: 1950. Thousands of Yemeni Jews have immigrated to the newly founded Israel in search of a better life. In an overcrowded immigrant camp in Rosh Ha'ayin, Yaqub, a shy young man, happens upon Saida, a beautiful girl singing by the river. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, they fall in love. But they weren't supposed to; Saida is married and has a child, and a married woman has no place befriending another man. 1995. Thirty-something Zohara, Saida's daughter, has been living in New York City-a city that feels much less complicated than Israel, where she grew up wishing her skin were lighter, her illiterate mother's Yemeni music quieter, and that the father who always favoured her was alive. She hasn't looked back since leaving home, rarely in touch with her mother or sister, Lizzie, and missing out on her nephew Yoni's childhood. But when Lizzie calls to tell her their mother has died, she gets on a plane to Israel with no return ticket. Soon Zohara finds herself on an unexpected path that leads to shocking truths about her family-including dangers that lurk for impressionable young men and secrets that force her to question everything she thought she knew about her parents, her heritage, and her own future. Songs for the Brokenhearted is a story about voice and voicelessness, traditions lost and found, and the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters. Ayelet Tsabari is the author of The Art of Leaving, finalist for the Writer's Trust Hilary Weston Prize, winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for memoir, and a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2019. Ayelet Tsabari's SONGS FOR THE BROKENHEARTED is out this week in North America, and I'm so thrilled for the opportunity to talk to her about this beautiful book, which began as a story about Yemeni Jewish mothers and daughters and became ever richer once Tsabari came upon the long tradition of Yemeni women's songs—she even found her own voice by joining a choir! But long before she knew these songs, there was Arundhati Roy's THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, the very first novel Tsabari ever read in English, and a novel that opened up the world for her in many different ways. Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In this conversation, Ayelet explains how learning about Yemeni women's songs shaped her novel, talks about how fascinating it was that so many of these songs (written and sung by women in arranged marriages) were about passionate love, and recalls how inspiring it was to encounter Arundhati's novel in which the writer tells the story of her corner of the world in all its complexity. She also discusses how she had to find her voice in English by writing nonfiction first, and how—before she was ready to write this novel—she'd had to rediscover the faith she'd had as a child. Zohara flies from New York to Israel for her mother's funeral. She'd already been through a tough year; a divorce from her American husband and trouble getting started on her doctoral dissertation at NYU. As she clears out the house where she grew up, Zohara finds tapes of her mother singing Yemenite songs in Arabic, and evidence of a secret romance. During her first thirty days of mourning, Zohara has conversations with her mother's longtime friends, joins her mother's Yemenite women's choir, and rekindles old friendships. Songs for the Brokenhearted (Random House, 2024) is a beautiful dual-timeline novel about the Yemenite community struggling in overcrowded immigrant camps in 1950's Israel, family bonds, mother-daughter relationships, political realities in 1995 Israel, and a young woman learning to be honest with herself. Ayelet Tsabari is an Israeli Canadian writer born in Israel to a large family of Yemeni descent. Her book of stories, The Best Place on Earth, won the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the Edward Lewis Wallant Award. The book was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, was nominated for The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and has been published internationally. These days, more than anything, she wishes for peace. Learn more about your ad choices. I was so happy to see BRAINWASHED receive a theatrical release, in Los Angeles & New York City to begin with, this little film that could with a powerful message has been held over due to demand & is also gaining screenings in other cities. I'll leave the link to the film's screening page in the show notes. Trust me, you want to head to the theatre and watch BRAINWASHED in a communal setting. Joseph Emet joins us again to talk with Dr. Zohara about meditation in general, but specifically walking meditation. They also review his 2016 book Finding the Blue Sky: A Mindful Approach to Choosing Happiness Here and Now, TarcherPerigee, 2016. In this book Emet recounts his own journey toward wellbeing and happiness through mindfulness. These steps are outlined clearly in the book: Each chapter starts with a Zen story, and continues with a set of exercises for applying that teaching to real-life situations. Like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Joseph had his introduction to the mindfulness tradition through Zen. He trained with Roshi Robert Aitken in Hawaii, and then continued with Thich Nhat Hanh in Plum Village (France). At the end of his training, Thich Nhat Hanh appointed him a teacher in his tradition of Zen. Joseph Emet started the Mindfulness Meditation Centre in 1997. Since then, he has trained several thousand people in mindfulness practices in large and small groups, for organizations, and in private sessions. Emet holds a Doctorate in Music from Boston University. He has been certified in Reality Therapy Counselling with Dr. William Glasser, and has been a Fulbright scholar. He is also a long time T'ai Chi practitioner. This interview was recorded in 2022. http://mindfulnessmeditationcentre.org Hosted by Dr. Zohara Hieronimus. Born Dan Griffith, Gryffin got his start in music as a classically trained pianist and guitarist while also playing in several bands. After receiving an electrical engineering degree from the University of Southern California, he pursued a path in music production, drawing equally from his carefully honed musicality and edgy ingenuity. Gryffin made his breakthrough in 2016 with two singles showcasing his melodic take on dance music: “Heading Home” ft. Josef Salvat (which shot to #1 on Spotify's US and Global Viral charts) and the Gold-certified Bipolar Sunshine collaboration “Whole Heart. In addition, his 2017 smash single and first Platinum record “Feel Good” — with Illenium and featuring Daya— peaked at #18 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay charts. Gryffin's major triumphs also include “Tie Me Down” ft. Elley Duhé (which hit #2 on the Spotify US Viral Chart, #9 on the Global Viral Chart, and was recently Platinum-certified), “Remember” ft. Zohara (which garnered 6.5 million streams in its first few weeks and earned support from Tiesto, who featured the track on an Instagram story), and “All You Need to Know” with SLANDER ft. Calle Lehmann (a Gold-certified smash that's now surpassed 320 million streams globally). In October 2019, Gryffin's debut album Gravity quickly climbed to #1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Now, with multiple heavyweight collaborations under his belt and a US tour underway with stops at major festivals, he's excited to put out his sophomore effort later this year as he continues to put out pop-dance anthems for the world. A first-person account of Jim B. Tucker's experiences with a number of extraordinary children with memories of past lives, New York Times bestseller 'Return to Life' expands on the international work started by his University of Virginia colleague Ian Stevenson. Tucker's work, lauded by the likes of parapsychologist Carol Bowman and Deepak Chopra, and described by some as quantum physics, focuses mostly on American cases, presenting each family's story and describing his scientific investigation. His goal is to determine what happened - what the child has said, how the parents have reacted, whether the child's statements match the life of a particular deceased person, and whether the child could have learned such information through normal means. Tucker has found case studies that provide persuasive evidence that some children do, in fact, possess memories of previous lives. Among others, readers will meet a boy who describes a previous life on a small island. When Tucker takes him to that island, he finds that some details eerily match the boy's statements and some do not. Another boy points to a photograph from the 1930s and says he used to be one of the men in it. Once the laborious efforts to identify that man are successful, many of the child's numerous memories are found to match the details of his life. Soon after his second birthday, a third boy begins expressing memories of being a World War II pilot who is eventually identified. Thought-provoking and captivating, Return to Life urges its readers, skeptics and supporters alike, to think about life, death, and reincarnation and to reflect about their own consciousness and spirituality. Nearly a third of the world's population suffers from hunger or malnutrition. Feeding them – and the projected population of 10 billion people by 2050 – has become a high-profile challenge for states, philanthropists, and even the Fortune 500. This has unleashed a steady march of initiatives to double food production within a generation. But will doing so tax the resources of our planet beyond its capacity? In this sobering essay, scholar-practitioner Eric Holt-Giménez argues that the ecological impact of doubling food production would be socially and environmentally catastrophic and would not feed the poor. We have the technology, resources, and expertise to feed everyone. What is needed is a thorough transformation of the global food regime – one that increases equity while producing food and reversing agriculture's environmental impacts. We had the pleasure of interviewing Gryffin over Zoom video! L.A.-based artist/producer Gryffin has just unveiled a new single entitled “Best Is Yet To Come” with buzzing California singer Kyle Reynolds. Released via Darkroom / Interscope Records, Gryffin once again crafts the ultimate summer anthem with an engaging electronic soundscape heightened by Kyle's soaring delivery and powerful hooks. The track and accompanying video showcase the promise of an endless summer as the world comes back to life. “Best Is Yet To Come” is available now via all digital retailers. Earlier this year, Gryffin teamed up with Two Feet for single “I Want Love” which thus far has generated over 9.5 million Spotify streams and garnered critical acclaim. EDM.com praised, “This idyllic track showcases a balanced blend of seemingly juxtaposing styles.”Additionally, his 2019 anthem “Tie Me Down” with Elley Duhé has surged in popularity once more. Exploding on TikTok, it has recently inspired over nearly 3 million videos in the past month alone. To date, it has amassed nearly a quarter-of-a-billion streams and views. Gryffin also recently announced the first dates for his return to Las Vegas for a 2021 Wynn residency. “I Want Love” followed Safe With Me”, featuring rising star Audrey Mika, and “Cry,” a collaboration with Swedish singer/songwriter John Martin hailed by EDM.com as a “scintillating future pop record that tugs at the heartstrings.” In addition, Gryffin's recent output includes “Hold You Tonight,” a breathtaking collaboration with platinum-selling country artist Chris Lane. Premiering in April, the acoustic-guitar-laced track marked Gryffin's first new music since the release of Gravity — a widely acclaimed album including hits like “Remember” ft. ZOHARA (a track that shot to #1 on Dance radio), “OMG” (a #16 hit on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, featuring Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen), and “Body Back” ft. Maia Wright (#16 hit on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart). With its incredible lineup of collaborators and guest artists, Gravity also features “Hurt People” (a collaboration with singer/songwriter Aloe Blacc, co-written by Bastille frontman Dan Smith) and “Baggage” by Gryffin with Gorgon City ft. AlunaGeorge (praised by Dancing Astronaut as a “perfectly poignant and danceable requiem to the summer season”). Known for his kinetic fusion of dance-pop and future bass, Gryffin recently earned RIAA gold certification for “All You Need to Know” with SLANDER ft. Calle Lehmann — a 2019 release that's now surpassed 100 million streams. The chart-climbing single appears on Gryffin's debut album Gravity, which hit #1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart soon after arriving in October 2019. We want to hear from you! By now we've established : 1. pleasant practice (episode 23). 2. Turning up (episode 25) and 3. Practice content (episode 27). This week we talk about time - this rare commodity in today's world. We want to help our children develop the skill of playing the instrument. "The development of ability cannot be accomplished by mere thinking or theorising, but must be accompanied by action and practice ." (Shinichi Suzuki). Time is connected to routine. Practice routine is the skeleton of practice. As "Student's ability grows at home" (Suzuki), you don't want to wait for the lesson to improve your child's ability. This episode talks about WHEN to practice and HOW LONG to practice. And finally in Suzuki words: " If one child practices 15 minutes a day, and another child practices three hours a day, it takes the second child THREE MONTHS to accomplish what the first accomplishes is NINE YEARS! Most people would say: The second child was more talented that the first. This of course is not true; he/she has simply practiced more." ++++++ IF YOU LIKE THIS PODCAST and WANT TO HELP, please lick the PayPal link http://bit.ly/PayPal-Souloist. Language and environment are connected.Language is embedded in the world we live in.And the world we live in is embedded in the language we speak.Language welcomes the new born. And it starts before birth. The language is there, surrounding us. The child doesn't need to be taught. He just LEARNS it. The teaching IS in the environment. As I was preparing this episode I was sitting outside with the birds. I couldn't help but think that if I was surrounded by this sound when I was born.. I would probably speak bird language now... We can use the word SPEAK as a metaphor here too. If the language is gentleness - the child will speak gentleness If the environment is restlessness –children will speak restlessness. If the language is violence - child will speak /express violence. If there's love for books, It will show on the child. Love of music- will become the child's love of music Love and appreciation of the arts... will become love and appreciation of children to the arts. So put in the environment what you want for your child. This topic in not exclusively for children; it applies for all. When you live among people who have an awareness for well being you'll develop it too. If You want to be happy and content, you will try to spend more time around happy people And then there's the internal environment. The way you speak to yourself. The time you spend doing things you like and enjoy. Let's touch soul ( take 2). Nature and Music as a great effect on our well being. Pandemic has allowed or pushed many of us to deeper observation and inquiry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IF YOU LIKE THIS PODCAST and WANT TO HELP me keeping it alive without the use of advertising , Click the PayPal link http://bit.ly/PayPal-Souloist I will be very grateful for any offering your heart calls you to do. What if you like doing many things and you find it difficult to "manage your time" between them? Do you need to make a priority list? Reflecting on the topic: If life is a canvas, I could be the artist. If life is blank page with music clefs , I could be the composer. If the score has already been written, I could be the pianist. If life is a clay, I could be the potter. If my pottery is broken I could glue them together, like in the art of Kentsugi, or throw it away... What is your 'Life List' and your 'soul list'? So, let's talk about soul. Let's define what soul is. I'm discussing with two of my soul friends, Barbara and Veta, on the way they see, feel or define 'SOUL'. I see soul as the essence that was there before I was born and will continue to be after I die. Every one is born with a gift, a spark, a gem that is unique to us. Discovering the gift is the process of creating relationships with your soul. -------------------------------------------------- Quotes from : Dr Shinichi Suzuki, Buckmister Fuller and Parker J. These were circles of women, elders, teachers and parents. In this episode i'm sharing with you about the Soul of Elderhood. You don't become an elder by being old. You become an elder by acquiring wisdom & depth. The dance of life goes on from birth to death. Sadly, in our culture many old people dread getting old. They do everything possible to stay young, or to look young. Elderhood could be the time to shed the expectations that your tribe, family or society have planted in you. Becoming an elder could mean setting yourself free to be who you are or who you've always wanted to be. Accepting old age comes with GRACE and NOBILITY. Weaving a new world requires the elders to step into their elderhood. *. *. *. I'm looking to grow the podcast to reach more listeners and I'd much prefer to not use advertising. Two themes appear in this episode. One is a myth about a "witch" and the other a reflection about Corona times. They are bound by a name - the crown. "One day, when I was a child, stories began to circulate about a witch that lived in an old, dilapidated hut." At the beginning of this episode I'm sharing the myth, the realness, the essence, the fear and the role they played in our collective early age consciousness. The Crone, the Wise Old Woman, The Hag, The Witch became distorted as history and patriarchal society took hold. Today marks one year since the first case of Corona has appeared in Australia Do you remember what you thought about it then? Do you remember what you felt? Do you remember the plans you had when you realised it might stay for a while? And now, after a year, do you have the courage to look at this list and see if you've done any of them? We could look at the mystery behind the plans that's hiding in the mud of creation. Looking at this time as time of germination. "A seed is planted in the earth. We don't see when the germination begins. That is the doing of Mother Nature; . . . We have to wait patiently. We cannot dig up the seed to see whether it is really growing; to do so, would be to destroy everything. Suddenly a bud appears. What a joy and pleasure to watch it grow! At the same time the root, unseen in the ground, is getting stronger and has the power to produce a big, sturdy tree." Dr Shinichi Suzuki, Nurtured by Love, p. 45 *. *. *. One of the greatest ways to practice "tricky" bits is to stop JUST BEFORE them. When you learn /practice a piece , Instead of playing the whole piece s l o w l y , analyse (with the help of your teacher, if needed) where the "tricky" bits are. (it's usually the place where you usually get stuck or make mistakes). Draw a dotted line in the score. When you play stop ( or freeze) where the line is, prepare in your head and go. Soon you'll realise that the stop doesn't happen any more. Congratulate yourself. You've mastered this place. *. *. *. My Grandfather Leo was a very gracious man. In this podcast I'm sharing with you some of the thoughts that came up today, on his birthday. How he affected my life, and how he lives in me long after he's died. "So long as we are being remembered, we remain alive" (Carlos Ruiz Zafon). How would you like to be remembered? It's not too late. You can create the way you want to be remembered right now. *. *. *. I'm looking to grow the podcast to reach more listeners and I'd much prefer to not use advertising. What a year this has been for the teachers among us ! We were called go much beyond the comfort zones of the teaching we had known. It held so MANY challenges to all of us: Suzuki Teachers,Instrumental teachers AND teachers in ALL subjects. We experienced losses AND gains. I'm inviting you to count them with me in this episode. In general we have become a smaller village and got closer to each other, exchanging ideas, connecting and developing together alongside with parents and students. What can we take from this experience as we go on to 2021? I suggest that Instead of “new years resolution” that works on targets and goals, we breath deeper and slower. We look at what we have and add a dash of presence to it. As you nurture yourself your students will be nurtured too. *. *. *. *. In Episode 5 Zohara Nguyen and I talked about thumb sucking and oral habits. We learned what oral habits are, how to identify them, and the IMPACT oral habits can have on development and function. In this episode, we chat to Zohara about how to manage and treat oral habits, how to fix them, and how parents can prevent them before they even start happening! We discuss the guilt that parents might feel when their child has an oral habit or suck their thumb, and give advice to parents in this situation. This episode comes with a FREE downloadable PDF all about oral habits and thumb sucking. Go to www.spot.family/podcasts to get your copy! "Thumb sucking” might have a big name, but the more technical term for sticking your fingers in your mouth? Is “oral habit”. Thumbs aren't the only things that get put into your mouth, or your kids mouth, on a regular basis. At this crucial time that we're developing this podcast, Corona virus is rapidly spreading around the world. It's a really appropriate time to be looking at oral habits, and not only how they can impact on facial growth and development, but basic hygiene as well. Having your fingers in your mouth spreads germs, and we should try to avoid it in ourselves, and in our children, as much as possible. Orofacial Myology is a field of study, or type of research that looks closely at the causes of oral habits, why they occur, and the impact that oral habits can have on the face, the mouth, and function. Orofacial Myology is integral in the diagnosis, and treatment of oral habits, and part one of this series will deep dive into all of these things.

J. Zohara Meyerhoff Hieronimus, D.H.L., is an award-winning radio broadcaster, social justice and environmental activist, and professional artist. She founded the Ruscombe Mansion Community Health Center in Baltimore in 1984. She hosted the national radio program Future Talk until 2008 and cohosts 21st Century Radio with her husband, Robert Hieronimus. The author of several books, she lives in Owings Mills, Maryland. In her book, "White Spirit Animals:Prophets of Change" she combines sacred elder lore, science, and her own telepathic dreams, to look at the special role played by White Spirit Animals in spiritual traditions and prophecy around the globe, where they are seen as guardians of animal wisdom, each with a special purpose and gift. She reveals how they have collaborated with humanity since the last ice age, inspiring spiritual practices and conferring shamanistic powers, and are considered the stewards of the great spiritual transformations that occur during transitional times. Sharing the waking vision of White Spirit Animals that called her to write this book, and their message of CPR for the earth—conservation, preservation, and restoration—she explains how to use shamanic dreaming and trans-species telepathy to communicate with these great spiritual teachers. Exploring each one of the major White Spirit Animals—White Buffalo, White Lion, White Elephant, White Wolf, and White Spirit Bear--and the cultures in which they are honored, the author shows, for example, how the White Buffalo is called a harbinger of peace and abundance by many Native American tribes and the White Bear, the great earth healer, teaches us about nurturance and patience. Visit her web site: http://www.WhiteSpiritAnimals.com At the top of the show, it's Anastasia's Starseed News, bringing topics of interest to starseeds!
