We take apart a musical artist, one fact at a time, in order to reassemble them as a food.
Love them or hate them, Rush has made an impact on the R'n'R landscape. Undeniably unique, talented and singular, Rush fans are some of the most devoted music fans that anyone could ever ask for. Their story is a novel, filled with dazzling high points and tragically deep lows. One thing you have to give it to Rush, is they were relentless in their pursuit of finding their own musical identity, even when confronted with the possibility of being dropped from their label. They did it their way and it worked. Today, Jamie Ryan and I will continue our deep dive into Rush's history, starting with the release of 2112 and moving towards the present. We will also unveil and devour the food that we've determined as the esculent sidecar to Rush's musical career, followed by a carefully chosen wine pairing selected by yours truly. It's a great episode, and the last one for now. No list of Seattle rock bands is complete without the utter powerhouse of grunge stalwarts Pearl Jam. Eddie and the crew have been cranking out album after album, tour after tour for over 30 years. Pearl Jam created a template for alternative rock copycats to cash in on, but none of them were able to dethrone the rightful heirs of grunge's answer to classic rock. On this episode of TBCBYF, we are joined by features editor for Bloomberg Businessweek and former editor for the New Yorker, Jeremy Keehn. Years ago he created one of the first websites for Pearl Jam tape trading around the world way back before anyone knew what the World Wide Web even was. Presenting the 2nd installment of our podcast episode all about The Who! Yes that's correct, perhaps you should check out episode 1 first. But do as you wish! My podcast guest Eric Chernov returns for more Who talk, entering the story at the touring of the Tommy album. From there, we will discuss more Keith Moon stories, Pete Townsend troubles, manger shifts, Quadrophenia, and anything else we may have forgotten to discuss in episode 1. Plus, we will finally get into English staple food that The Who earned the hard way. Once again sponsored by Izzy's Coffee. Don't forget to review us on Apple Podcasts. No list of the top British Invasion bands of the 1960's would be complete without The Who, arguable the most important band of their generation after The Beatles and The Stones. Although the band carries on in the absence of 2 pivotal members, (RIP John Entwistle and Keith Moon), The Who continues to fly the bullseye banner for Maximum R'n'B. Joining me today is musical scholar and composer, Eric B. Chernov, a lifelong Who aficionado who has been writing his own book about the band. The Who earns top honors in securing a pivotal English food, (not fish and chips), and we're happy to share that meal with you. Have a cup of Izzy's Coffee and try not to break anything. NRBQ is fondly known as the greatest bar band in America, if not the greatest bar band in the world. Although they've never reached the forefront of pop-music fame, they've managed to gain the admiration of everyone with the their finger on the pulse, including such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, R.E.M.,… and the list goes on infinitely. On This Band Could Be Your Food's 30th episode, Madison Wisconsin's very own Andy Moore and I dive into the rich history of a true American treasure, NRBQ. In the process, we pick out a food that is another frequently looked over treat. We are sponsored by another American treasure, Izzy's Coffee out of Asheville NC. Cook on and rock out! TBCBYF returns from hibernation with our episode on the loudest band we've covered so far, Dinosaur Jr. J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph's undeniable chemistry as an underground rock-n-roll powerhouse is so mighty, it keeps the three members of the band glued together whether they like it or not. Join me and my old High School friend Eugene Kim, as we discuss what forces got him and I to go see them at Lollapalooza in 1993, our impressions on their 3 chapters of record releases, a thorough breakdown of J and Lou's major blowout, plus a quick check in on mysterious replacement bass player Mike Johnson. After two nominations and endless support from her dedicated fans, Pat Benatar has finally been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside her musical partner and husband, Neil Giraldo. It is puzzling why this inevitably took so long, since the music of Pat Benatar has been prominently featured on classic rock stations for decades, not to mention being a pillar in the foundation of MTV's heyday. Hopefully these accolades will help put her on the modern rock ladies Mt. Rushmore forevermore. Check out this episode of This Band Could Be Your Food as I chat with NYC's official #1 Pat Benatar flag waver, Cathy Cervenka. We will be discussing the origin story of one of rock's leading ladies. We'll uncover her path from being a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia to having the 2nd video EVER played on MTV, alongside plenty of other fun facts and pieces of trivia surrounding Patricia's musical history. Once we've done that, we will unveil the recipe and food that I believe is truly and uniquely Pat Benatar's equal. Vincent Damon Furnier is the inventor of shock rock, but we know him better as Alice Cooper. Avid golfer, devout christian, trouble maker and Hollywood Vampire, Alice has had a storied life. David Bowie was almost a one-hit wonder, with his breakout hit Space Oddity. Then he shocked everyone by changing his entire persona a few years later, transforming into Ziggy Stardust. Today we will examine his career and transform it into an outside-of-the-box food. Join me and Michael T, New York's upmost authority on all things David Bowie related. Although Nirvana seems to get the credit for opening the world to the Alternative Nation, Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell was the one who literally coined the term “Alternative Nation.” After releasing three groundbreaking records, the band broke up in 1991. They have had various attempts at reviving its legacy, and are making a strong claim recently by welcoming back founding member Eric Avery. What a coincidence that Nick Cialdini and I, two Wisconsinites moonlighting in Italy, had an in-depth conversation about Jane's Addiction over a tasty meal this summer. Minutemen were to hardcore what The Talking Heads were to punk. D Boon, Mike Watt and George Hurley, the three "corndogs" from San Pedro that drove the Minutemen style of Econo punk rock, understood that being punk meant breaking down all the establishment borders. SST records helped them get their first recordings out to the people, and also helped them create their own label, New Alliance. Mike Watt and company are the focus of this weeks food/ music pairing! Sitting in as co-pilot is Jeanette Dainty, an old friend who almost named her first born after the iconic bass player. We will dig deep into their history, the inseparable friendship of the band's nucleus, Mike Watt and D Boon, the impact they had on punk and hardcore music, and why they are still on everyone's minds. Louisville, Kentucky's My Morning Jacket is the topic of this week's band-to-food comparison. I travelled to a remote lake house straddled between the North Carolina and Georgia border to discuss why this band is so important to a devoted group fans who also happen to be members of my running team, (the Rabies Awareness Running Team). We discuss the very beginning of Jim James' venture into the reverb drenched records, starting with Tennessee Fire and onwards. We will get into Jim's very earliest and unlikely influences, why this band truly needs to be experienced live, and a run-down of all the great cover songs they've incorporated into their live sets over the years. For this week's band to food pairing, we examine the history of California's 80's rock staple, Huey Lewis and The News. My partner for the journey is none other than Oscar winning producer, multi-instrumentalist, Grammy nominated composer, as well as host of the podcast The Third Story, Leo Sidran. Together we will discuss the deep roots of Huey's upbringing as a child of two parents on different coasts of the country, the history of Huey's first major band Clover and how they got the gig of backing Elvis Costello for his first record, the controversy surrounding Ghostbusters and it's similarity to one of The News's biggest hits, as well as how the band is currently dealing with their frontman's recent hearing loss diagnosis. The day Roland Orzabal laid eyes on a handsome Indian looking fellow in Bath England, (he wasn't Indian), Curt Smith and Roland became a musical force that eventually became Tears for Fears. They came to rule the world in the 80's, split up in the 90's, and reformed in the 00's. They just released a new record that's right on par with the rest of their catalog. For this week's episode of This Band Could Be Your Food, I travel to Asheville NC to talk with the number one Tears for Fears fan in my orbit, Ross Britton. We will discuss the musical history of the band beginning with their mod group, Graduate, who the coolest member of Tears for Fears is, (hint- it's not Curt or Roland), the meticulous process that the band undergoes when making new records, and prepare one of the most involved dishes in TBCBYF history. Jeff Mangum and his fellow Ruston, Louisiana buddies in Elephant 6 had a lot of bands with a lot silly names. Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Cranberry Lifestyle, System Flying Machine, Elf Power... just to name a select few. Of all of these groups, one really captured the imagination of the indie rock world; Neutral Milk Hotel. With the help of schoolyard friend and musical companion Robert Schneider, the recording project that eventually morphed into the four piece we know and love recorded two incredibly beautiful, noisy and influential records, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and On Avery Island. For authenticity sake, I head down south to record this episode with my old friend Ross Britton. He just happens to own my favorite coffee shop, Izzy's Coffee. Cheap Trick is on the table for today's episode of #TBCBYF. Back in 1973, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Cheap Trick is midwestern proud, just like myself and this weeks guest, Kyle Urban, aka Kyle Motor. We dive into the history of the band and uncover where Bun E. Marvin Lee Aday, otherwise known as Meat Loaf, is the topic of these weeks TBCBYF episode. He left this world at the age of 74 due to alleged Covid complications, but his legacy and infamy will live on forever. Alongside musical collaborator Jim Steinman, their musical presence in the world transcended all the musical trends in their time against the odds. How did he do it? I bring in my “in-memoriam” podcasting partner, Nate Hall, to figure out what magical combination it took to make this Broadway rock act create one of the best selling albums ever. What's so bad about Foreigner? I bet you love more of their songs than you know. When band leader Mick Jones wrote the riff that became Feels Like The First Time, his double vision dreams of creating an iconic arena rock band came into focus once Lou Gramm and the boys jumped aboard the ship. Charlie Schmid and I once again join forces to ponder the question, what food is Foreigner? The really come from no one, specific place. In 1982, London punk-rockers Shane MacGowan and Spider Stacy stumbled into fusing their love of punk with traditional Irish melody, and a new music genre was born. Often imitated and rarely duplicated, The Pogues laid the foundation for many Irish rockers to come, including Black 47, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys and The Kissers. No matter how many other bands walk in their footsteps, “There's only one Shane MacGowan.” Join me and The Kissers' bandleader Ken Fitzsimmons, (a group that I played in for many years), as we dive into the history of The Pogues, the importance of the London punk scene on the band, what makes Shane an authentic voice for Irish culture, and a recalling of the time our band got to open for Shane MacGowan and The Popes. Fugazi was not just any old band from Washington DC. They were an important musical and social movement that inspired a generation of kids to do-it-themselves. They were the “real” alternative to what was known as alternative in the 90's, and it ingrained a conscience into everyone who participated in the scene that still permeates today. My old friend and ex-DC native Peter Heyneman sits down with me to rap about all things Fugazi, including our personal stories of meeting Ian MacKaye, how the band was able to successfully build their own business model that stuck it to modern-corporate society, how their sound grew and formed organically, and who might be considered the equivalents to Fugazi in today's music world. People usually have one of three different reactions when it comes to the band, Wilco. They either love them, think they're ok, or they've never heard to them. Nobody hates Wilco, from what I can tell. For this weeks Thanksgiving themed episode of TBCBYF, I chat with my childhood friend and Wilco aficionado Eugene Kim. Together we discuss Jeff Tweedy's first band with Jay Farrar, Uncle Tupelo, the pros and cons of the various members of Wilco, including early line-ups, the Jay Bennet days, and the current gang with Glenn Kotche and Nels Cline, why Wilco has become the definition of "dad rock," and how ex-Lounge Ax owner Susan Miller has been a pillar in Tweedy's life. This week, we discuss the intricacies of Australian's contribution to classic rock radio stations around the world, AD/DC. When Angus Young wore his schoolboy outfit to an early gig in 1973, the look fused alongside their timeless take on rock and roll, and their songs have been inspiring young guitar players for decades. Tune is as I chat with Kyle Peterson, singer of various punk and rock bands in Madison Wisconsin, (including the singer of Bon Scott era AC/DC tribute band, The Bon Squad). We will examine how Malcolm and Angus young owe much of their success to their older siblings, the different theories on why exactly Bon Scott passed away early in his life, the formula that makes an AC/DC song like no other, as well as the impact they have had on our own careers as musicians. Since we just examined Rolling Stones and Living Colour, let us round out the trifecta with the 3rd band to play LA's Memorial Coliseum back in October of 1988. This was when GnR filled the final slot of a legendary 4-show run in LA for the Stones tour backing their new release, Steel Wheels. GnR happened to be pushing their second major release, Lies, featuring the dumpster-fire-of-a-song One in A Million, which effectively polarized fans, critics, and their own band members. For this episode I talk with Dan Hinkel, a former writer for the Chicago Tribune as well as an old neighbor from my hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin. We will discuss the origins of all 5 original band members, weigh the pros and cons of some of their "replacements", examine how GnR become such a rock force to recon with, and expose the perfectly crafted food/ beverage combination to tie it all together. In 1988 when the video for Cult of Personality catapulted onto the MTV cable waves, Living Colour was ready to expand the minds of music listeners all over the world with their debut record Vivid. Drummer, musician and lifelong LC fan Charlie Schmid recommended we dig into the history of this iconic band, and we learned a lot. For this weeks episode of TBCBYF, we take a look at the deep musical backgrounds of each individual member, from their roots in NYC, how guitarist Vernon Reid and singer Corey Glover first met, and how the destiny of this quartette inspired many reputable and famous musicians to champion them right from the start. To celebrate our 10th episode, as well as to pay homage to the passing of The Stones' drummer Charlie Watts, this week Nate Hall and I discuss The Rolling Stones. It seems like they have always been here, but we'll see if can't trace back to the moment when the plates collided, resulting in the formation of the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. For this episode I drill Nate with trivia questions and see if I can't stump him. We will be discussing Charlie Watts' career, the dreaded 1969 Altamont concert, their first live performance of Brown Sugar, and treasure chest of trivia for all levels of Stones fans. Not to mention, we find a slightly healthier recipe of a classic American dish, and some funny comparisons between the food and the band. Have a great lunch and don't forget to rate the podcast. Pavement is one of the most influential indie rock bands of all time, yet the most obscure one TBCBYF has covered thus far. Although the band released their final record in 1999 and have been dormant since their reunion in 2010, they are gearing up for deluxe release of Terror Twilight, (produced by Radiohead's Nigel Godrich), and a tour to boot. This episode is the first to have its food recommended by actual Pavement member, Bob Nastanovich, which makes this whole thing an extra, special treat. Join me and my old high school friend, Andy Hinkel, as we discuss how all the members of Pavement came together, the night they and David Berman heckled Nirvana in Hoboken, what sets Stephen Malkmus's guitar playing apart from all the rest, and how much this “slacker rock” band actually, truly cared. All the while, we send a blender to heaven and enjoy a surprisingly delicious... PLEASE RATE THE PODCAST HERE....
Originally formed as Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks, and later cherry picked to be Bob Dylan's first live backing band, four Canadians and a feller from Arkansas eventually settled on a legacy, forever known as The Band. For this episode, Nate Hall and I brew up a pot of coffee and sip bloody Mary's, as we analyze the power struggle between Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm. The two main Band members never saw eye-to-eye, but they still created a body of work that has transcended music for decades with a style all their own. To top it all off, we find the perfect companion food for listening to my favorite Sunday morning record. Enjoy your lunch, and rate TBCBYF on Apple Podcasts
As for as Irish bands go, none of them have achieved the captivation and near world domination that U2 has. For this episode, I discuss with former Rolling Stone writer, Bono-fied lifelong U2 fan and MomMeCare curator, Sarene Leeds, we navigate the band's history from, their first band meeting as a 6-piece in Larry Mullen Jr.'s parent's kitchen, discuss which members are Christian and which are vegetarian, a look behind the scenes of what hard-core U2 fandom really looks like, the effects of giving music away for free, and all the while, we share a modernized recipe of an old Irish standard dish. In 1977, Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers became a turbulent musical force known as The Police. The impact they had on music, fusing punk spirit with reggae, jazz, fusion and world music, is still felt in the world today. Since we couldn't round up the actual members of the band, we found the next best things- New York's Finest, a NYC based Police tribute band. Members Oscar Bautista and Alan Camlet sat in with me as we discussed the origins of the band, what convinced them to dye their hair blonde, their darkest record, how many recordings they still owe A&M records, and the worldly dish we have equated them with. After you listen, please review us on Apple Podcasts. Thanks for tuning in!
This week's episodes takes a deep look into Houston's legendary powerhouse, ZZ Top. The band recently lost their talented and iconic bass player Dusty Hill at the age of 72. We are dedicating this weeks band and food pairing to their untouchable legacy. The ZZ Top tour continues on, but we take a pit stop to examine all of the mouth watering Texas dishes we could dream up in order to pinpoint the perfect dish. My old friend Nate Hall joins me as we discuss ZZ Top's origins, their previous side bands and odd jobs, how they stumbled into their signature look and 80's success, the buffalo they used to tour with, and all the while enjoy a satisfying lunch. This week's interlude music comes from Hometown Sweethearts, (including the song that was included in Instant Family!) Upcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Todd Rundgren is the centerpiece for this week's TBCBYF episode. Join me and my former bandmate Tommy DeVito, as we dive into the bottomless well of Rundgren trivia, discovering his famous actress daughter, his ongoing controversy with John Lennon, a story about Tommy playing on-stage with Todd, and much, much more. All the while, we dig into a spice plate of..... #toddrundgren #meatloaf #xtc #thenazz #coconutcurry #thaifood #foodandmusic #musicandfood #bubble #tommydevito #nathanpalan #MTV #musichistory #rock #thaicoconutcurry
80's darlings of the LA punk scene, The Go-Go's are the subject of this weeks band and food matchup. We are once again joined by our good buddy and Long Island native, Charlie Schmid, otherwise know as goth-romantic Del Judas. Charlie and I discuss the origins and history of the band, their punk beginnings, the issues surrounding their on-again/ off-again career, and their ability to transcend a primarily male dominated music scene and become the first and only all-female driven rock band to top the charts. If that wasn't enough, we also perfect a tasty and tricky-to-make summer treat… #thegogos #gogos #ginaschock #belindacarlisle #janewiedlin #charlottecaffey #kathyvalentine #lemonmeringuepie #foodandmusic #lapunk #80s #riotgrrrl #cooking #rockmusic #musichistory #baking #pies
Join us as we pick apart Mötley Crüe in order to guide us to the very delicious food that they are. I bring on Charlie Schmid to help me untangle the thick web of rumors surrounding the band, including their LA origins, their connections that brought them together, the effect they had on Long Island men in the 80's, and ponder why they keep retiring and un-retiring. All the while, we munch on some tasty.... #mötleycrüe #motleycrue #motleycrew #mickmars #nickysixx #vinceneil @thevinceneil #foodandmusic #TBCBYF #80smetal #calimex #la #tacos #bourban #cooking #rocking @motleycrue
For the first episode, I decided to keep it simple. It doesn't get any simpler than the Ramones. They made rock and roll live again in the late 70's, and won't take credit for launching punk-rock, (but we all know they did). This food pairing was so obvious to me that it had to be the lead-off episode. Enjoy as my good friend Charlie Schmid and I navigate a mountain of great Ramones trivia, and devour a tasty... #ramones #CBGBs #markyramone #joeyramone #tommyramone #johnnyramone #deedeeramone #burgers #burgermix #foodandmusic
