She also happens to be the daughter of rock icons Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.I first met Hana a few years ago, so it was great to catch up and learn what she is currently up to. At the time of our interview, Hana's show Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules on E! was mid-season. Hana details what it was like to be working on a ranch with other celebrity offspring, embracing the whole experience and how she stayed grounded in a unique situation. Hana's childhood was anything but normal. She grew up on tour with rockstar parents, yet their humble beginnings and creative spirits fostered Hana to grow into her own creative and independent direction. Even as a child, she designed merch for her mom. She later began writing songs for other artists, performing in music videos, and producing campy social media videos. Hana has experienced intense childhood bullying and people developing friendships with her to get close to her parents despite her creative success. Today, Hana has a serious radar on authenticity and is leaning more into her creative endeavors. Be on the lookout for a new EP from Hana! 1980 - June: “The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2023 37:03

The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack is a powerhouse collection of rhythm and blues that captures the essence of the iconic film.  It features a blend of classic blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Cab Calloway.  The Blues Brothers originated as a musical comedy act created by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in the late 1970's.  Inspired by their shared love for blues and R&B music, Aykroyd and Belushi created fictional characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, as their alter egos.  The act gained popularity, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1978 and eventually to the creation of the Blues Brothers motion picture in 1980.  In the film, parolee Jake Blues is joined by his blood brother Elwood Blues on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by reuniting their band and raising the $5000.00 for the property tax bill.  Their quest brings them to a number of characters played by iconic artists including Cab Calloway and James Brown.  The resulting soundtrack stands as a testament to the enduring power of blues music and left an indelible mark on both the film and music industry.John Lynch dons his suit and dark sunglasses to bring us this feature. Minnie the MoocherCab Calloway originally presented Minnie the Moocher back in 1931, and reprises the song for this film.  Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and a popular vocalist of the swing era.  Calloway plays Curtis in the film, a father figure and mentor to the Blues Brothers, and performs this song as a warm-up to the concert.Jailhouse RockAs the movie ends with Jake and Elwood back in prison after successfully paying off the tax bill for the orphanage.  The band plays Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" for the inmates as the credits roll.  Jake Blues (Belushi) takes lead on this upbeat number.ThinkAretha Franklin covers her own song as Mrs. Murphy, trying to persuade her husband Matt Murphy to not join the band.  Franklin had a lot of difficulty lip synching the song and would have preferred to just sing it live.  The Blues Brothers join her on this cover.Gimme Some Lovin'The Blues Brothers cover this piece originally performed by the Spencer Davis Group and made famous by Steve Winwood.  While the song was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, in the film it gets a decidedly cooler reception in the honky tonk bar in which it is performed.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Lookin' for Love by Johnny Lee (from the motion picture “Urban Cowboy”)With the decline of disco, crossover country & western hits became popular.  John Travolta starred in this movie which capitalized on the popularity of country music. STAFF PICKS:Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by the ClashBruce brings us the third single from the Clash's third album, “London Calling.”  This was a double album, and a post-punk turn by the group.  The song was originally intended to be a giveaway flexi single, but was put on the album at the last minute when that deal fell through.  Mick Jones wrote and sings lead on this song, inspired by his tumultuous relationship with Stiltz guitarist Viv Albertine.Free Me Big by Roger DaltreyWayne features the front man for the Who in a solo effort written by Argent guitarist Russ Ballard.  The song is on Daltrey's 1980 solo album “McVicar” It also appears on the soundtrack for the movie "McVicar" in which Daltrey plays John McVicar, an inmate in prison for a number of bank robberies.  The other members of the Who play on this song as uncredited musicians. We Live for Love by Pat BenatarRob's staff pick is performed by Benatar, but it is often confused for a Blondie song.  It is a single from Benatar's debut album, “In the Heat of the Night,” and was written by Neil Giraldo, Benatar's then-guitarist and now-husband (and still guitarist).  It was the leading track from side two.Ride Like the Wind by Christopher CrossLynch's staff pick went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the number 1 slot by Blondie's “Call Me.”  It is Cross's debut single from his Grammy winning 1979 self-titled album.  Cross dedicated the song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979.  Michael McDonald is easy to identify on backing vocals.   NOVELTY TRACK:Turning Japanese by the VaporsSongwriter and Vapors lead singer David Fenton says this is all the cliches about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to.  This new wave song went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her second album, 1980's Crimes of Passion, was her most successful work, peaking at No. 2 in North America and France, being certified 4× and 5× platinum in the US and Canada, respectively. Her next release, Get Nervous (1982), sold less well than her previous two albums, but did include the North American hit "Shadows of the Night".Her sound began to move towards more atmospheric pop in 1983. The single "Love Is a Battlefield" (1983) was her biggest hit in most countries, reaching No. 1 in the Netherlands, Australia and on the US Rock Tracks chart, and No. 5 on the US Hot 100. The live album it came from, Live from Earth, was her biggest seller in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1984, she released Tropico and its lead single "We Belong", which reached the top 10 in several countries, including No. 5 on the US Hot 100.Her 1985 album, Seven the Hard Way, sold less well but it yielded two singles harking back to the rock vein: "Invincible", a top 10 hit in North America, and "Sex as a Weapon". Her follow-up, Wide Awake in Dreamland (1988), marked a resurgence in sales in Canada and Australia, and was her biggest hit in the UK. Its rocker, "All Fired Up", was a significant hit in Canada, Australia and the US. She released four additional albums between 1991 and 2003 That were well recieved. After two nominations and endless support from her dedicated fans, Pat Benatar has finally been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside her musical partner and husband, Neil Giraldo. It is puzzling why this inevitably took so long, since the music of Pat Benatar has been prominently featured on classic rock stations for decades, not to mention being a pillar in the foundation of MTV's heyday. Hopefully these accolades will help put her on the modern rock ladies Mt. Rushmore forevermore.    Check out this episode of This Band Could Be Your Food as I chat with NYC's official #1 Pat Benatar flag waver, Cathy Cervenka. We will be discussing the origin story of one of rock's leading ladies. We'll uncover her path from being a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia to having the 2nd video EVER played on MTV, alongside plenty of other fun facts and pieces of trivia surrounding Patricia's musical history. Once we've done that, we will unveil the recipe and food that I believe is truly and uniquely Pat Benatar's equal. Back on Dec. 26, 1963, the Beatles had their first U.S. release of “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” and it skyrocketed to No. 1 on U.S. charts just 5 weeks later. “I like, so many people, were inspired by the Beatles” said Jim Ownby who at the time was a teen with a passion for music. “I heard that song and started growing my hair.” It even got him into a little trouble. “My physical education coach made me wear a ponytail in the front of my head because my hair was too long”, Ownby said. “It didn't bother me. In fact, I think it bothered him more than it bothered me.” Ownby started his first band at 14 years old with some friends in Ft. Pierce with Ownby playing bass and singing. The band eventually got their first gig at a teen night at a club. It was their first time performing on a stage in front of an audience. At the age of 15, the band found themselves on the road headed to Coconut Grove for an even bigger opportunity. The Hunn's were going to open for John Sebastian's band, before he founded Lovin' Spoonful, in front of 2,000 people. “I got a dose of the ‘real scared.' You think it's nothing until you go all out there and see all those people,” Ownby said. It wasn't performing with his band that made him nervous, though. “My knees were wobbly and I thought I was going to fall introducing John Sebastian's band to the crowd,” Ownby said with a chuckle. From there Ownby went on to play in a few road bands — moving around from Daytona Beach to Orlando, playing Rock and Roll and Blues hits. It was then he found a new calling. “My goal was to be a rock star, but that didn't pan out”, Ownby said. “The reason I considered opening a music store was because I knew so many musicians in the local area that had to go to Orlando to buy anything at all almost, there were just no music stores locally.” In 1974, Ownby opened Coastal Discount Music Store on the south end of Beach Street in Daytona Beach. He and his wife at the time ran the store during the day and Ownby would still play in bands at night. The store was the spot to go to for some guitar work and equipment rentals. Spring Break was a big time in Daytona Beach in the 70s and early 80s. Every bar on Main Street had live bands performing and if they needed something Coastal Discount Music was there to provide it. “Daytona Beach was a nucleus for music in the 70s and bands from all over the country would come to perform and would often come through the store since it was one of the only ones in the area,” Ownby said. Meeting groups like Lynard Skynard, Molly Hatchet and the Allman Brothers when they would come in for little stuff here and there. Ownby even became friends with Neil Giraldo, an amazing guitarist who later married Pat Benatar. One of Ownby's fondest memories of playing music was the night Niel Geraldo and drummer Jeff Servera took him to go play bass in a jam session. “We played for 45 minutes and Neil blew them away,” Ownby said. “Talk about feeding off the audience. People heard him from the beach and came off the beach to hear him play and he just took the house down. It was truly the highlight of my musical career.” Coastal Discount Music moved to the west end of Main Street in Daytona Beach and thrived until 1981 when the disco era took a lot of live music out of clubs and bars and replaced it with vinyl. Deejay groups were being booked more than bands and that's when the necessity of Ownby's music store became less relevant. “I was really sad to see that change happen. Not just for my business, but the feeling you had walking down Main Street Daytona Beach just changed,” Ownby said. “The way someone feels when they hear live music and the interaction you get from the band and audience isn't something you get as much when listening to recorded music. It's good, but there's nothing like the feeling live music gives you.”

Neil Giraldo was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. Immersed in the culture of his beloved Sicilian ancestry, his parents Anthony and Angela Giraldo instilled the love of music at a young age, giving Neil his first guitar at the age of six, with the hopes that he and his sister, Priscilla, who played the accordion, could entertain family and friends with songs from the old country after church on Sundays. As Neil got older, his mentor, Uncle Tim, introduced him to revolutionary bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and all the other great guitar-driven rock ‘n' roll bands of the 1960s. Finding new and innovative ways to shadow path his way into songs, Neil developed a discipline early on of not just playing along to his favorite artists but creating different parts for himself within those tracks. At the same time, the budding guitar artist also became proficient on piano by continuously practicing along to Chuck Berry (Johnnie Johnson), Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis records. His interest in percussion instruments soon followed, practicing the drums to Simon & Garfunkel albums he explored how different rhythms could alter the complexion of songs. These practices and disciplines created the foundation for his future success as an innovative record producer and musician. Giraldo began his professional career in 1978 as a key member of the Rick Derringer band after competing against 200 other guitarists for the position. It wasn't long before Rick discovered Giraldo's piano playing prowess and quickly put those skills to work in the studio for the recording Guitars and Women. In the spring of 1979, Mike Chapman introduced Giraldo to an up-and-coming singer named Pat Benatar who had recently signed to Chrysalis Records. While impressed with the young vocalist, Chapman felt she needed a musical partner who could facilitate the creation of a sound both identifiable and powerful. Over the years Neil has produced some of their biggest hits including “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong.” With a back catalog of more than 100 songs written and more than 45 million records sold, Giraldo has written, produced, arranged, and recorded for Pat Benatar, John Waite, Rick Springfield, Kenny Loggins, Steve Forbert, The Del Lords, Beth Hart, The Coors, and others, which include many Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning hits. Today, Giraldo's career is as dynamic and diverse as ever. He is in the process of completing two books – one an autobiographical novel, one a motivational book on the psychology of creating. He is further expanding his Bel Chiasso entertainment company, which is developing a variety of television, film and Broadway theater projects. On May 16th 2016 Neil founded Three Chord Bourbon to celebrate creativity, community, and tradition by bringing together the award-winning musician and producer's love of whiskey and music with his passion for conversations with family and friends. Inspired by the simplicity yet infinite expressions of the three chord progression — the foundation of the blues — Neil collaborated with master blender and distiller, Ari Sussman, to bring together notes of a variety of bourbons and create a distinctive taste in whiskey that balances simplicity and complexity in perfect harmony. Neil has utilized this new platform to assist emerging musicians via Three Chord Musical Ambassador program. One of the staple groups of the early 80's New Wave genre was Missing Persons.  Their debut album with Capital Records was Spring Session M, an anagram of the band's name. The founding trio was vocalist Dale Bozzio, drummer (and Dale's husband) Terry Bozzio, and guitarist Warren Cuchunullo.  The Bozzio's were working with Frank Zappa and met Cuchunullo when he contributed to a Zappa album.  The trio worked with session musicians, created an EP, and established a successful presence in Los Angeles.  They added bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Chuck Wild to the band before producing their debut album.Spring Session M was a success, riding the New Wave genre to popularity.  Dale Bozzio's makeup and quirky vocals added to that success, as did her photogenic presence in the band's videos on the fledgling cable channel MTV.  Unfortunately, Spring Session M would also be the high water mark for the band, with follow-up albums failing to achieve similar success.  The band broke up in 1986, as did the Bozzio's marriage.  However Dale Bozzio, Cuchunullo, and O'Hearn would continue to work together on solo projects and Mission Persons reunions.  The band tours today, with Dale Bozzio as the only founding member still present. WindowsThis song expresses the idea of watching life from the safety of the windows rather than participating in it.  It was the third of four singles released from the album.  Words"What are words for when no one listens?"  The lyrics for this song chronicles the apathy of society and the efforts that people make to be seen and heard:  "Do you hear me?  Do you care?"  "Not only are they deaf and dumb they could be going blind and no one notices.  I think I'll die my hair blue."  This is also a good example of Dale Bozzio's vocal range.Noticeable OneAlthough there was some airplay for this song, it was not released as a single.  Continuing the theme of attention or lack of attention, this song calls for the listener to "Notice me!"Destination Unknown The biggest hit (tied with "Words" on the charts) only went to number 42, but spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.  The synth heavy song was on their 1980 EP, and was released on this album.  It saw heavy airplay in the early days of MTV.  "Life is so strange (destination unknown) when you don't know your destination." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Imperial March (the Darth Vader Theme from the motion picture “The Empire Strikes Back”)This movie was re-released (actually the third release) in November 1982 in preparation for the third installment in the trilogy to follow. STAFF PICKS:New World Man by RushBrian's staff pick is from the album Signals.  "He's noble enough to know what's right but weak enough not to choose it.  He's wise enough to win the world but fool enough to lose it."  Surprisingly this is the highest charting single by Rush hitting number 21 on the Billboard Top 40 - the only Rush song to make the top 40.  The song was a last-minute addition to the album.  Don't Fight It by Kenny Loggins and Steve PerryBruce brings us a song off Kenny Loggin's album "High Adventure."  Loggins and Perry co-wrote this rocker with Dean Pitchford who would go on to write the screenplay for Footloose.  The guitar work is from Neil Giraldo, Pat Benatar's husband and guitarist.  This is one of Perry's furst non-Journey works, and he was looking to connect with other songwriters as he prepared to work on his solo album. Halloween by the Dead KennedysWayne features a punk work which encourages people to be themselves each day rather than just putting on masks at Halloween.  The Dead Kennedys formed in 1978, and this song is off their second studio album, "Plastic Surgery Disasters."  They recorded four albums before breaking up in 1986, though they have reformed from time to time ever since.Crazy by SupertrampRob's staff pick is "a little song to make you feel good," a deep cut off the last album with Roger Hodgson.  It is off their studio album "...Famous Last Words..." which was their follow-up to the amazingly successful "Breakfast in America."  The album would reach number 5 on the album charts and contained the hit "It's Raining Again." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:D. N. A. by A Flock of SeagullsWe close out with an instrumental from New Wave artists A Flock of Seagulls.

Patricia Mae Giraldo, better known as Pat Benatar, became one of the most prominent female rock stars when she made her debut in 1979.  Her most successful studio album was this second album, Crimes of Passion, which would benefit from play on rock stations around the country and the new music video media spearheaded by MTV.Benatar had actually abandoned early dreams of a singing career, choosing to pursue health (actually sex education) at Stony Brook University, rather than music at Juliard.  She dropped out of Stony Brook after a year, married Dennis Benatar, and worked as a bank teller in Virginia while he was stationed at Fort Lee.  Her interest in singing was rekindled after attending a Liza Minnelli concert.  She had some local success in Richmond and in New York where she and Dennis moved in the mid-70's, — but the real breakthrough would happen in Halloween 1977 when she performed in a spandex costume.  Shortly thereafter she was signed by Chrysalis Records.  She ended up divorcing Dennis Benatar thereafter, but would keep his last name as her professional name. While Pat Benatar achieved strong success on her debut album with the hit "Heartbreaker."  Crimes of Passion would make Benatar a household name.  The album would spend five consecutive weeks at number 2 on the album charts in January 1981, and would net Benatar a Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" of 1980.  Pat Benatar would appear on the cover of the October 1980 issue of Rolling Stone along with her guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. We think you will enjoy this excellent album.  At least we will do our best to hit you with our best shot! Hit Me with Your Best ShotThis song is the second single off the album, but the biggest hit, and her first entry into the top 10.  The song was written by Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer Eddie Schwartz, inspired by a therapy session he participated in that involved hitting pillows.  This is a true rock anthem. Little ParadiseThis deeper cut leads off side two of the album, and was written by guitarist and soon-to-be husband of Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo.  To us, it feels a little more like Ted Nugent or southern rock.  You Better RunThe first single released from the album is a cover of a song originally performed by The Young Rascals.  Although this song missed the top 40 (peaking at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100), it would become the second music video ever broadcast on MTV after the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star."Hell Is for ChildrenThis emotional song was written by Benatar, Giraldo, and bassist Roger Capps and is Neil Giraldo's favorite song.  Pat Benatar was inspired to write this song by a  series in New York about abused children.  Later on Benatar and Giraldo would actually create foundation for abused children ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Cosmos”This popular PBS series premiered in September 1980, and would make Carl Sagan a household name. STAFF PICKS:“Introduction/Lola” by the KinksBrian's starts our staff picks off with a live version of the 1970's hit about an encounter between a young man and the cross-dressing Lola.  In the song the guy meets Lola in Soho, London, but the inspiration was a result of Kinks manager Robert Wace spent an evening in Paris dancing with a cross-dresser.  “Games Without Frontiers” by Peter GabrielWayne's staff pick takes its name from a European TV show, "Jeus Sans Frontieres" where people from different places would play games of skill while wearing strange costumes.  The British version of this game show was called "It's a Knockout," and that title also makes it into the song.  The song's lyrics are a commentary on war and negotiations between countries being like children on a playground.  Kate Bush contributes backing vocals in this song.“The Legend of Wooley Swamp” by the Charlie Daniels BandBruce takes us on a spooky trip to the Wooley Swamp where the ghost of miser Lucious Clay torments the spirits of his killers, the Cable Boys.  Today Wooley Swamp is the name of a farm campground and RV park near Raleigh.“Turn It On Again” by GenesisRob finishes off our staff picks with the first single off Genesis' album "Duke," written by band member Mike Rutherford.  It is about a man who doesn't do anything but watch TV, and begins to think of the TV personalities as his friends.  The song has a complex time signature, with much of the song in 13/8.     INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:"Dinorah, Dinorah" by George BensonWe're turning to a jazz instrumental by R&B and Jazz artist George Benson to finish off this week's podcast.  It was off his 1980 album, "Give Me the Night."

Patricia Mae Giraldo sounds like a pretty cool name for a performer. You know her as Pat Benatar. Let’s take a deep dive in to the career of one of the best female rockers of our time: Speaking of the name Benatar, it’s actually not a stage name. Pat was married briefly to a GI named Dennis Benatar, and decided to keep the name So where did her current married name Giraldo come from? She married her guitarist and musical director Neil Giraldo in 1982 Benatar is one of the few female rockers ever to be accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. But she rebelled, and never attended Like most of her rock counterparts, she started humble, singing nights and weekends in bands while holding down jobs as a bank teller, and waitressing gigs Out of the 12 studio albums she has produced, 6 of them went Platinum, including her debut album In The Heat of the Night Though the height of her success happened in the 80s, Benatar got her start in the 70s singing regularly in the New York City area, where she was discovered at the Catch A Rising Star club (singing a Judy Garland song at 3am) and signed by Chrysalis Records If you’ve gone to any of Benatar’s shows, you know she’s a huge Zeppelin fan. She often closes her live shows with a reggae version of Stairway to Heaven Songs like Crimes of Passion, Fire and Ice, Shadows of the Night, and Love is a Battlefield earned her a 4-peat of Grammy awards from 1980 to 1983 Pat Benatar remains quite active in her music career, continuing to tour, put on live shows, and writing new material

The great Neil Giraldo joins Fred for a chat about life, grappa, MTV, whiskey, vodka hate and more. Neil also gives advice to rising musicians and talks about his new venture--a spirits company--including a solid whiskey called Three Chord. NEIL GIRALDO Neil is a professional musician, producer, and film composer with over four decades experience. A songwriter with a back catalog of more than 100 songs and more than 45 million records sold, he has worked with some of the greatest artists in the music industry, including Rick Derringer, Pat Benatar, John Waite, Kenny Loggins, Steve Forbert, The Del Lords, and Beth Hart. His work has produced many Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning hits, and he holds the distinction of being the first guitar player appearing on MTV. Today, he continues to expand his creative portfolio: in addition to writing new songs for stage and screen, he is writing screenplays for feature films, touring, and reaching out into the community to work with musicians young and old. Giraldo began his professional career in 1978 as a key member of the Rick Derringer band after competing against 200 other guitarists for the position. It wasn't long before Rick discovered Giraldo's piano playing prowess and quickly put those skills to work in the studio for the recording of Guitars and Women. In the spring of 1979, Mike Chapman introduced Giraldo to an up-and coming singer named Pat Benatar who had recently signed to Chrysalis Records. While impressed with the young vocalist, Chapman felt she needed a musical partner who could facilitate the creation of a sound both identifiable and powerful. Over the years Neil has produced some of their biggest hits, including "Love is a Battlefield" and "We Belong." With a back catalog of more than 100 songs written and more than 45 million records sold, Giraldo has written, produced, arranged, and recorded for Pat Benatar, John Waite, Rick Springfield, Kenny Loggins, Steve Forbert, The Del Lords, Beth Hart, The Coors, and others, which included many Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning hits. Neil was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. Immersed in the culture of his beloved Sicilian ancestry, his parents Anthony and Angela instilled the love of music at a young age, giving Neil his first guitar at the age of six, with the hopes that he and his sister, Priscilla, who played the accordion, could entertain family and friends with songs from the old country after church on Sundays. As Neil got older, his mentor, Uncle Tim, introduced him to revolutionary bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and all the other great guitar-driven rock 'n' roll bands of the 1960s. Finding new and innovative ways to shadow path his way into songs, Neil developed a discipline early on of not just playing along to his favorite artists, but creating different parts for himself within those tracks. At the same time, the budding guitar artist also became proficient on piano by continuously practicing along to Chuck Berry (Johnnie Johnson), Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis records. His interest in percussion instruments soon followed; practicing the drums to Simon & Garfunkel albums, he explored how different rhythms could alter the complexion of songs. These practices and disciplines created the basis for his future success as an innovative record producer and musician. Last week, I started out with a quick measles update saying that the outbreak has mostly subsided, but I want to reiterate how important it is to get yourself and any young children vaccinated before the next outbreak begins. Israel-based Ynetnews revealed this week that a 43-year-old flight attendant who had contracted measles while working on the New York to Tel Aviv route for Israeli airline El Al died this week after a long hospital stay. Rotem Amitai was a mother of three who fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Israel, where there has been a serious ongoing measles outbreak. She had only received one dose of the measles vaccination and was therefore still susceptible to the disease. In the United States, one does of vaccine is usually administered when a child turns one year old and a second is administered before the child enters school, and in city data, 46 of the total 653 measles cases in this year's outbreak were children or adults who had only received one does of the vaccine. El Al Airlines now requires all flight attendants to be vaccinated against the disease, and it's believed that people flying home from overseas trips and returning to communities in Williamsburg and upstate in Rockland County were the initial sources of New York's current measles outbreaks. 16 years ago on August 14, 2003 — A cascading power outage plunges millions into darkness across the northeast — What began as a damaged power line and a software malfunction in Ohio led to overloaded equipment throughout the interconnected power system stretching from Canada into the northeast United States. The power surge from Ohio triggered safety systems across the region, creating what is thought to have been the most widespread outage in both United States and Canadian history and the second-most-widespread in the world. It took around two days for all overloaded components to be checked and brought back online, with some smaller areas remaining without power for nearly a week. In New York, the city and most of the state were in the dark. Traffic lights were out and elevators and the subway were stopped, leaving many commuters in need of emergency evacuation and with no way to reach their homes as night began to fall. Some stayed in office buildings, on the floors of generous co-workers who lived nearby, or even slept outside, while others attempted to walk home or catch a ride on a bus or taxi, turning Manhattan's bridges into one-way exits. Update: The suspect was taken into custody around 1am on August 17th — Police are still looking for a possible suspect in Friday morning's bomb scare where two empty rice cookers were left in the Fulton Street subway station downtown. The proximity of the station to many government offices and the sheer number of commuters that pass through the station during morning rush hour, the area was quickly evacuated and subway lines were disrupted beginning around 7:30am. Police found the large silver rice cookers to be empty and deemed the situation safe, but a third, identical rice cooker was then found next to a city trash can in Chelsea at Seventh and 16th. The rice cookers were empty, and they may have been intended as hoax devices to cause disruption. Police released stills from security camera footage showing a white man in his 20s or 30s with dark, curly hair and a distinctive tattoo on his outer forearm, and described him as a person of interest. After seeing the security camera footage, a West Virginia man identified the person as his son, who may have recently been pan-handling in the city. No further info has been released and the police are still searching for the suspect as of this recording. Although the incident brings to mind the Chelsea pressure-cooker bombing of 2016, there have also been recent scares from abandoned rice cookers, one found in a suitcase in Midtown at a 6 Train station in 2017 and another in an F Train station on the Lower East Side in 2018. 42 years ago on August 22, 1977 — 19-year-old Richard Rodriguez from Staten Island sets a Guinness World Record for longest rollercoaster ride on the Coney Island Cyclone — His record time was 104 hours and 2,350 rides during the 50th anniversary of both the coaster and Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Rodriguez would break the record once again 40 years later on a UK coaster with a time of over 405 hours! Here's Rodriguez interviewed in the 1978 film 'Coney Island Cyclone' by Mike Edwards. OMNY, the MTA's new fare-collecting system, sees 1 million uses in just over two months — The new MetroCard replacement is only available at 16 subway stations along the 4/5/6 and on Staten Island buses, but the tap-and-go system reached the 1 million target four times faster than the MTA has predicted. To use the system, you wave a credit or debit card or a cellphone or watch above the glowing panel. The system aims to reduce the waste and complexity of issuing disposable MetroCards since the contactless system uses your payment method directly, just like at a cash register, although there will be a refillable OMNY card once the system expands, and the MetroCard is still scheduled to be used through 2023. According to the MTA, 80% of the OMNY swipes have used mobile wallets where people have added their payment cards to their phone, since very few credit or debit cards have the built-in technology, which is different from the chips that are now seen on some cards. Neil Giraldo is one of music's "hit makers." As a musician and producer, he's worked with some of rock music's legendary performers to create the soundtrack to our lives since the late 70's. While he's not the first musician to create a whiskey brand, he comes to the whiskey business with more than just a name. He helped his grandfather distill whiskey and grappa as a young boy growing up in Cleveland, and tells us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth that there's a lot in common between producing a hit song and blending a hit whiskey. We'll also have the story of a new world record for the most expensive bottle of whisky, along with new ownership for Cutty Sark, the week's new whiskies, and much more.
