Tom Petersson is a musician best known as the bassist and co-founder of the iconic rock band Cheap Trick. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Petersson's musical journey began at an early age when he picked up the guitar. However, he later transitioned to bass guitar, a move that would define his signature sound and role in shaping Cheap Trick's distinctive style. In the early 70s, Petersson co-founded Cheap Trick with guitarist Rick Nielsen, drummer Bun E. Carlos, and vocalist Robin Zander. The band quickly gained recognition for their high-energy performances, catchy melodies, and fusion of hard rock, pop, and punk influences. Petersson's melodic basslines became a hallmark of Cheap Trick's sound, adding depth and groove to their music. Throughout his career with Cheap Trick, Petersson has been a key contributor to the band's success, both in the studio and on stage. His innovative bass playing can be heard on many of the band's hit songs, including "Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me," "Dream Police," and "The Flame." In addition to his work with Cheap Trick, Petersson has collaborated with various artists and pursued solo projects. He released a solo album titled "Tom Petersson & Another Language" in 1984, showcasing his versatility as a musician beyond the confines of Cheap Trick's sound. Petersson's influence extends beyond his musical contributions. His distinctive 12-string bass guitar, custom-built by Hamer Guitars, has become iconic in the rock world, inspiring generations of bassists. He is also known for popularizing the use of the 12-string bass in rock music, pushing the boundaries of the instrument and paving the way for its acceptance in mainstream rock. Over the years, Petersson and Cheap Trick have received numerous accolades and awards, including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Despite lineup changes and the evolving music industry, Petersson remains an integral part of Cheap Trick's enduring legacy, continuing to tour and record with the band, captivating audiences with his dynamic bass playing and infectious stage presence. Tom Petersson's contributions to rock music and his enduring influence on bassists worldwide solidify his status as a legendary figure in the annals of rock history. I hope you will enjoy Tom Peterrson's story. Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founding member of KISS stops by to talk about working with his former band, his new music and why he doesn't approve of all of the KISS merchandise that features his image. Liberty DeVitto, author of the memoir Liberty: “Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness” talks about the thirty years he spent playing drums for Billy Joel. We talk about how they met and get some inside scoop. For instance, did you know Only the Good Die Young was written as a reggae song? Finally, we meet John Lennon's personal photographer Bob Gruen. The legendary photographer opens up about taking famous pictures of every rock ‘n roll star from David Bowie and Led Zeppelin to The Clash and The Sex Pistols.

Twelve Songs of Christmas

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Cheap Trick weren't sure a Christmas album was a good idea when asked by their label to do one, but 2016's Christmas Christmas worked out, and it's better when bassist Tom Petersson makes clear the thoughts behind some of their versions. They revisited the rock 'n' roll Christmas canon and made those songs rock more. No small feat in some of the cases.  We got time to talk because Cheap Trick has a new album, In Another World, which took on unintended meanings since it was finished in 2019 before COVID-19 hit. Petersson talks about what it's like to be a band that lives to tour when you can't tour.  If you like what you hear or are curious, please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts—Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Pandora, or Spotify.

As one of the founding members of legendary power pop band Cheap Trick, bassist Tom Petersson's unique playing style contributed a vital component to their fifty years of rock 'n roll success, resulting in number one hits and a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. And the hits keep on coming, as the band has just notched its highest-charting album ever, the newly-released "In Another World", during a global pandemic! Surrender to Nick and Tom as they dish about five decades of music, camaraderie, and making it all about the fans.   HIGHLIGHTS:   [02:13] The new album "In Another World" was ready to go in early 2020, but Covid delayed the release until now [02:53] All the members of Cheap Trick contribute ideas for songs, working as a team to write, record, and produce each album [05:20] The band will try any idea just to see if it works, but they usually agree when it's time to move on to something else [06:31] Cheap Trick don't follow trends, they write, record, and release the music they like [07:26] Almost 50 years into their run, Cheap Trick have scored their highest charting album with "In Another World" [08:35] The record label suggested recording the song "In Another World" as a ballad, and the band liked both versions so much, they put them both on the album [09:29] Originally a rhythm guitar player, Tom translated his big style to bass so that he could compete sonically with lead guitarists [10:36] Tom created and designed the triple-stringed bass with the help of friends at Hamer Guitars in Chicago [12:33] Tom has a nice collection of guitars and basses for recording, since different instruments makes a musician play differently [15:18] Cheap Trick started in 1974, so they're quickly approaching their 50th anniversary as a band [16:08] Tom collaborates with artists that he likes and admires, musicians whose sound will mesh with his unique style [18:13] Very early on, Cheap Trick performed a few covers, but they were intent on playing their own music [19:21] Tom and the other Cheap Trick members still play with their unique "Cheap Trick attitude" [22:23] Being locked down during the pandemic has allowed the band a year to be creative and stockpile song ideas [23:50] Cheap Trick is always recording music, not necessarily with an eye on having a Top 40 hit, but mainly because they enjoy the process of making music [25:01] Although they play the hits during a show, the band enjoys throwing deep cuts into the mix for the long-time fans. [27:25] Cheap Trick have a couple of shows booked for the summer, but they're on hold waiting for more venues and shows to open up post-pandemic [28:34] Despite being together for five decades, the band's chemistry prevented them from reaching the "breakup" moment that many other groups face   Thanks for listening! 1979 - December: Cheap Trick “Dream Police”

Dream Police is the fourth and most successful studio album from Cheap Trick.  It hit number 6 on the Billboard 200 Album chart, and was certified platinum only a few months after its release.  Robin Zander (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar, backing vocals), Tom Petersson (bass, backing vocals), and Bun. E. Carlos (percussion) would get more complex on this album, incorporating orchestration and lengthening the tracks.Cheap Trick formed in 1973 by Tom Petersson and Rick Nielsen, and this album’s line up is the original members.  Dream Police was completed and ready to release in early 1979, but the group decided to delay the release due to the success of their live album “Cheap Trick at Budokan.” Cheap Trick had a big following in Japan, and that energy really shows on the live album.Cheap Trick has a feel somewhere between new wave and rock, and their hits are spread out fairly evenly on their albums.  In this case, there are two hits, the title track and "Voices," and the rest of the album would be deeper cuts.  This makes this album an enjoyable one to hear from start to finish.Cheap Trick was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.Dream PoliceThe title track and lead song off the album reached the top 30 on the charts, all the way to number 26.  Songwriter and guitarist Rick Nielsen describes the song as part "Big Brother is watching you" and part trying to capture a deep thought from R.E.M. sleep.Way of the WorldOne of the more orchestral tracks, this song was co-written by Zander and Nielsen.  It was released as a single, but didn't get much airplay.  The orchestration reminded all of us of E.L.O.  I'll Be With You TonightA deep track off the album, this song was co-written by the entire band.  It has a classic "Cheap Trick" feel to it, that you would recognize as the band even if you hadn't heard it before.  VoicesThis song was the second single released from the album in December, and reached number 32.  When it was originally recorded, bassist Tom Petersson sang lead, but it was re-recorded for the album with Robin Zander on lead.  Many vocals are layered in on this track, and session guitarist and Toto band member Steve Lukather plays on this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Rainbow Connection by Kermit (from the motion picture “The Muppet Movie”)Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets made their big screen debut with this hit movie. STAFF PICKS:This Is It by Kenny LogginsBruce's staff pick moved from a love song to a more spiritual thing when Loggins' father faced a serious health issue.  Loggins' lyrics reflected a person who is suffering through pain, looking for a miracle, and needs to "stand up and fight."  Michael McDonald co-wrote the song and his distinctive voice is easy to pick up as backing vocals.  It reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award. An American Dream (featuring Linda Ronstadt) by the Dirt BandWayne features the group formerly known as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, dealing with the issue of wanting to go to Jamaica and not having the money to live so richly.  Rodney Crowell originally wrote this song in 1978, and The Dirt Band would take it to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 as a cover. We Don't Talk by Cliff RichardBrian's staff pick is a synth-heavy breakup song from UK superstar Cliff Richard.  Richard became a Christian in the 60's, and releases a Christmas song every December which is usually a top 20 song in the UK.  This is Richard's biggest selling song globally.Tusk by Fleetwood MacRob brings us the title track from Fleetwood Mac's follow-up to the highly successful Rumors album.  This song is famous for utilizing the USC Trojan marching band, setting a record for the most number of musicians performing on a single. COMEDY TRACK:Money by The Flying LizardsThis spoken word novelty song picks up where the Beatles left off on this Motown song.

Founded in 1974 by Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and erstwhile drummer Bun E. Carlos, the Rockford, IL-born band is back with IN ANOTHER WORLD – their 20th studio collection and first since 2017’s double header of WE’RE ALL ALRIGHT! and CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS. Produced by longtime associate Julian Raymond, the new LP sees the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees doing what they do better than anyone, crafting indelible rock ‘n’ roll with oversized hooks, mischievous lyrics, and seemingly inexorable energy. Trademark anthems like “Light Up The Fire” and “Boys & Girls & Rock N Roll” are countered by more introspective – but no less exuberant – considerations of times past, present, and unknowable future on such strikingly potent new tracks as “Another World” and “I’ll See You Again.” As irresistible and immediate as anything in their already awesome catalog, IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their irrepressible best, infinitely entertaining and utterly unstoppable.“We’re too dumb to quit,” Nielsen says. “We just love to play.”Cheap Trick remain among the most influential and popular bands of any era, armed with an untouchable canon of certifiable classics like “He’s A Whore,” “California Man,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender,”  “I Want You To Want Me,” and the worldwide #1 hit single, “The Flame.” 2016 saw the band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a long overdue acknowledgement of a nearly five decade career that has earned Cheap Trick more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications, myriad awards and industry honors, featured appearances on over 20 movie soundtracks, and total record sales well in excess of 20 million.Thing is, where other artists of their vintage might be content to rest on their hard-earned laurels, Cheap Trick remain indefatigable, touring more than 150 nights each year while also continuing to expand their recorded catalog.“We’ve put out four albums in the last three years,” Zander says. “It’s a work ethic that I think comes from maybe growing up in the Midwest. It’s a different world now though. We made two records a year with our first four albums.”“We try to just knock it out,” Nielsen says. “We never were one of those bands that spent months and months and months and months sitting in a studio, trying to make it better and better and better.”Cheap Trick attributes much of their recent creative boom to both Daxx Nielsen – the band’s touring drummer since 2010 – and Academy Award-nominated producer/songwriter Julian Raymond, the de-facto “fifth member” of Cheap Trick and friend for more than three decades.“Julian’s a godsend,” Nielsen says. “Working with us is like herding cats, but he does it. He listens to everybody. Bad ideas, good ideas, he listens to them all. It’s what a real producer does.”“We consider him part of the band,” Zander says. “He’s a songwriter, a singer, a musician, a producer. He’s the whole package of somebody that you want to work with.”Sessions for IN ANOTHER WORLD got underway with Raymond in Nashville, during a free week amidst the band’s endless touring. The band’s approach to songwriting remains the same as ever, with each member contributing ideas and musical elements that are then made whole through collective creativity.“We all have home studios,” Zander says. “So the basic stuff – demos and pre-production – comes from our homes individually and then we bring that into the band. If it’s half-baked, we throw it back in the oven and fix it up. Then we set aside a week and go in and record the record.”“We’ve built up all these different ideas over all the years,” Petersson says. “There will be certain things that maybe didn’t strike people at the time but now it’s like, what’s that? Wow, that’s great.”Kicking off with “Here Comes The Summer” – which first appeared in 2018 as a standalone single titled “The Summer Looks Good on You” – IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their most eclectic, touching on a myriad of distinct sounds and song approaches, from the breakneck “Another World (Reprise)” to the swampy Chicago blues number, “Final Days” (the latter boasting fiery harmonica from GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer and Wet Willie frontman Jimmy Hall).“Cheap Trick has always been diverse,” Nielsen says. “We didn’t just try to write a pop song and then make the rest of the record a bunch of other pop songs, just not as good.”“There’s a lot of nuance in our songs,” Nielsen says. “They sound fairly simple but they’re not.”To be sure, a slightly dark sense of unknowing permeates IN ANOTHER WORLD, imbuing songs like “Another World” and “So It Goes” with a haunting new meaning in these strange times. Though “The Party” might swagger like the Sunset Strip in the 1980s, the song is in fact, says Zander, about living on “the edge of death.”“This record in particular reflects what’s going on in the world around us right now,” Zander says. “We’ve always been a positive band, we’ve always been hopeful, even when we’re being tongue in cheek. But now that we’re getting older there’s not as much nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah going on.”“We don’t go out of our way to bring stuff up,” Petersson says. “Whatever happens, happens. I don’t know how to explain it. Everything seems crazy now but when we were growing up, it was crazy too. Vietnam, Nixon. Kent State. Somebody said to me, was it much better then? It was bad then. Was it polarized? Yes. Was it frightening? Yes. Looking back on it, it was that bad. At least then you could go to a rock ‘n roll show, but there’s nothing we can do about that at the moment.”From their very start, Cheap Trick have proudly asserted themselves as rock ‘n’ roll fans, a passion often manifested through inventive cover versions both on stage and in the studio. IN IN ANOTHER WORLD includes the band’s timely rendition of John Lennon’s still-relevant “Gimme Some Truth,” originally released for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019 and featuring the instantly recognizable guitar sound of erstwhile Sex Pistol Steve Jones.“That came from watching TV and listening to these politicians,” Zander says. “They’re just constantly shoved down your throat. That song just popped into my head and I thought, oh my god, it means more nowadays than it did back when John wrote it. So I went into my own studio and did a version of it. The single came out before the album but then later on, we decided, why not put it on the record?”“It’s so cool to have Jones on there,” Petersson says. “He’s a funny guy. He’s got a style that’s unmistakable; he’s got a great feel and a great sound. Just perfect for that type of song.”Cheap Trick are of course one of rock’s hardest working live acts, lighting it up at arenas, concert halls, and amphitheatres worldwide more than 150 nights each year. Alas, recent events have forced the band off the road for perhaps the longest hiatus of their storied history. Cheap Trick hope to return to the endless highway, with plans to support their good friends in ZZ Top’s 50th Anniversary tour now postponed until 2021.“We don’t go on tour for 18 months and then go home for 18 months,” Petersson says. “We’re on call, all the time.”“Right now, obviously, it’s out of our hands,” Nielsen says. “If we don’t see each other for a bit, or if we don’t play live for a week or two, we just fall right back into it. We never get rusty – we started out rusty.”IN ANOTHER WORLD makes it abundantly clear that Cheap Trick remain as one of a kind as ever before, indefatigably blasting out perfect pop rock ‘n roll with high craft, cheeky humor, and amp-blasting power. Indeed, IN ANOTHER WORLD stands as triumphant testament to Cheap Trick’s constant creative motion, these venerable veterans as energized and enthused as a young band just out of the garage.“On our first album I wrote, ‘I’m 30 but I feel like 16,’” Nielsen says. “Well, I still feel like I’m 16… at least until reality hits me. But when I get up and play, I still feel like the youngest guy up there.”“We’re always thinking about the next one, whatever it is,” Petersson says. “As soon as we finished the latest one and we’re like, okay, now what’s next? It’s nice, in that we have a creative outlet that we’re always looking forward to. You come home from the road and you’re playing guitar or hearing something on the radio, thinking, oh wow, that gives me a great idea for the next record. We’re always thinking that way. We’re always looking to the next one.”“This band is held together by music,” Zander says. “It’s the super glue that keeps us writing and putting records out. The reason we started the band in the first place was to tour and write songs and put records out. If all that went away, there would be no point then, would there?”

Cheap Trick Part 2In Part 2 of our Cheap Trick review we pick up in 1979 with the band deciding to record a live album while on tour in Japan to support their third album Heaven Tonight. The decision to record a live album to capture the mania surrounding the band in Japan proved to be career changing. At Budokan, originally slated for release in Japan only, changed the fortunes of Cheap Trick from opening act and small venue headliner to arena kings. Seemingly overnight, Cheap Trick became a household name in their home country on the strength of their first major hit “I Want You To Want Me.” We explore the significance of At Budokan and discuss the absolute brilliance of one of the best live rock albums ever recorded. From there, Cheap Trick recorded the hit album Dream Police. Leaving the 70’s, Cheap Trick created a legacy of 4 classic studio albums and 1 all-time great live album. The early to mid 80’s would not be as successful for the band as they experienced some commercial disappointment. Then out of nowhere in the late 80’s, Cheap Trick climbed again to the top of the world with a batch of pop songs that would put them back in the forefront. Many bands get one shot at superstardom and then fade away. Cheap Trick had two separate runs at superstardom. Although their music output of the 90’s and 2000’s has not been as commercially successful, the band continue to record and make relevant music. We wrap up Part 2 with our personal Top 10 songs by Cheap Trick. While many of our choices are predictable, you will want to hang around for the end for some surprises (and maybe some songs you were not familiar with). Enjoy Cheap Trick Part 2 as we celebrate one of the best rock bands America ever produced.Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

Formed in 1973 in Cheap Trick are one of the most successful and influential bands in Power Pop history. But to only fit them in the Power Pop box would not be accurate. Over the course of nearly 50 years, they have recorded songs that could be categorized as hard rock, prog rock, glam rock and even pure Top 40 pop. From the beginning, Cheap Trick were a contradiction of sight and sound – Lead Singer Robin Zander and Bassist Tom Peterson looked like they were cut out of the Rock n Roll idol template with their good looks and rock star presence. Meanwhile, Guitarist Rick Nielsen looked more like a character out of a comic book and Bun E. Carlos looked like - well your Dad. The music at one moment sounded like an evolution of The Beatles and then something more like a combination of weird prog, hard rock, glam and punk. While success would come in a big way in 1979 as Cheap Trick became one of the biggest bands in the world, they were hardly an Overnight Sensation. In fact, after three studio albums from 1977 – 1979, many wondered if Cheap Trick would ever become more than a regional rock band playing to a thousand fans in small clubs and theaters. They released their self-titled debut album in early 1977. The album received some favorable reviews but went unnoticed by record buyers and failed to crack the Billboard 200.The second album, In Color, considered one of their best studio albums was released later in 1977. While it fared better than the debut (#73) it still did not make many waves. But just when things seemed dire for Cheap Trick, something was brewing on the other side of the world in Japan where the album peaked at #30. They released their 3rd album Heaven Tonight in 1978 where the album would eventually reach #48 in US. Meanwhile, as the saying goes, they were Big in Japan where the album reached #11. On tour there in 1979, their lives would be changed forever. Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

One of the most underappreciated bands in rock. Undaunted by the ups & downs of the fickle music business, Cheap Trick have played over 5000 shows and released 20 albums, including "Rockford" in 2006, one of their best albums ever. I could've picked any song from this album-- it's that good-- but I settled on "If It Takes A Lifetime". If you don't have this album in your collection, don't wait-- Go get it now.  "If It Takes A Lifetime" (Robin Zander, Tom Petersson, Rick Neilsen, Bun E. Carlos & Julian Raymond) Copyright Z.P.N.&C./Sony/ATV (BMI) and Maxiva (ASCAP)

Cheap Trick – riding high with latest album We're All Alright! – have announced the launch of a Christmas-themed LP on Oct. 20 via Big Machine Records. Christmas Christmas includes 12 tracks, three of which were written by the band, while the others are all seasonal classics from down the years. News of the project arrived in July, when bassist Tom Petersson said the band had completed work “about two months ago” and that it would arrive “around Halloween.” It's their third record in two years after We're All Alright! followed 2016's Bang, Zoom, Crazy… Hello. Big Machine said in a statement: “Arriving mere months after We're All Alright!, Cheap Trick co-produced the holiday collection alongside their longtime collaborator, Grammy award winner Julian Raymond. With Christmas Christmas, Cheap Trick deliver a sleigh full of rock'n'roll classics and festive favorites by Wizzard, Slade, Chuck Berry, The Ramones and The Kinks, as well as newly-penned offerings like joyous lead track ‘Merry Christmas Darlings.'” The album is available for pre-order now via a PledgeMusic campaign, which offers a range of bundles from the music itself to Christmas tree ornament, stocking, sweater and scarf. Asked about the band's creative drive, Petersson said: “It just seems very natural for us – I can't really explain it. People will ask for advice and I just don't have any. We love recording and writing together, and we always search for that perfect record you can never achieve, so I guess that might be one of those things that keeps us going. There's always room for improvement and change.” The band released a single entitled “I Want You For Christmas” in 1987 – however, it doesn't appear on the upcoming album. Cheap Trick – Christmas Christmas track list 1. "Merry Christmas Darlings" (new track) 2. "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" (Wizzard) 3. "I Wish It Was Christmas Today" (Julian Casablancas) 4. "Merry Xmas Everybody" (Slade) 5. "Please Come Home For Christmas" (Eagles) 6. "Remember Christmas" (Harry Nilsson) 7. "Run Rudolph Run" (Chuck Berry) 8. "Father Christmas" (The Kinks) 9. "Silent Night" 10. "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)" (The Ramones) 11. "Our Father Of Life" (new track) 12. Welcome to the House of Crouse. Do you know where you were on July 8, 1977? I do. I was fourteen years old at the Halifax Forum gearing up to see KISS’s Love Gun tour with opening act Cheap Trick. It was my first big rock show and I remember it as if it was yesterday and not almost 40 years ago. A lot has changed since then… I don’t have braces anymore for instance… but one thing hasn’t. With 20 Million Albums sold, 40 gold & platinum Certifications for 16 studio albums, Cheap Trick is still rocking as hard as they did when they made my fourteen year old braces rattle. Recently inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame and with a new album called Bang, Zoom, Crazy...Hello available now, founding members Rick Nielsen (lead guitar) and Tom Petersson (bass guitar) join me at the House of Crouse.
