Tears for Fears is a duo formed in 1981 in Bath, England by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They've sold over 30 million albums, starting with their first, The Hurting, which went to number one in the UK. But it was their second album, Songs from the Big Chair, that made them international stars. It came out in 1985, and had huge singles like “Shout” and "Head Over Heels.” But their biggest hit is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It won Best Single at the BRIT Awards in 1986, and it's been streamed over 2 billion times. So I talked to the two of them about how they, along with their producer Chris Hughes and keyboard player Ian Stanley, made a song that would help define the sound of the 80s.For more, visit songexploder.net/tears-for-fears.

Am 25. Februar 1985 haben Tears for Fears ihr zweites Album "Songs From The Big Chair" veröffentlicht, auf dem mit "Shout" oder "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" große Hits sind. Schon mit ihrem Debütalbum "The Hurting" haben Tears for Fears Anfang der 80er-Jahre die Charts erobert und es in ihrer britischen Heimat bis auf Platz 1 geschafft. Mit "Songs From The Big Chair" haben es Roland Orzabal und Curt Smith dann auch bei uns in Deutschland an die Spitze der Charts geschafft. Mit "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" und "Head Over Heels" sind auch einige ihrer größten Hits auf dem Album "Songs From The Big Chair". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Songs From The Big Chair" wird im Podcast gesprochen (11:15) – "Shout"(27:26) – "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"(34:59) – "Mothers Talk"(46:23) – "I Believe"(51:03) – "Head Over Heels"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge: https://1.ard.de/tears-for-fears-songs-from-the-big-chair-podcast __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? ears for Fears es una banda británica de pop rock y new wave fundada en 1981 por Roland Orzabal y Curt Smith. Incluye éxitos como "Mad World" y "Pale Shelter". Songs from the Big Chair (1985): Este álbum consolidó a Tears for Fears en el mercado internacional, siendo uno de los más exitosos de su carrera. Incluye clásicos como "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," "Shout," y "Head Over Heels."

A number of bands seem to turn a corner with their third album, and Master of Puppets is no exception.  Metallica's third album would achieve both critical and commercial success, crossing out of the new thrash metal sub-genre of hard rock to achieve multi-platinum recognition.  Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield collaborated with drummer Lars Ulrich as the principal songwriters, creating riffs that were assembled and reassembled over time until they formed a song.  The band would then be called in to create a tile and topic for the song, at which point Hetfield would create the lyrics.Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.  Although glam metal was on the rise, the band avoided the over-produced, synth-laden sound popular in the era, and stuck to their signature thrash metal sound with political lyrics.  The resulting album would consolidate the thrash metal scene, and bring the sound into a more mainstream audience.Unfortunately, the album would also be the last one for which bassist Cliff Burton would be featured.  Burton died in September 1986 while the band was on tour in Sweden, and their bus was involved in an accident.Metallica would become a huge group from the late 80's onward, and this album shows the strength of the group in those years when they were just coming into the consciousness of the commercial world.Lynch brings us this highly influential thrash metal album.  Fans of the Show Julie Doran and son Zack join us in Wayne's absence for today's podcast. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)The song that concludes side 1 of the album was inspired by Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."  The lyrics portray the thoughts of a mental patient incorrectly institutionalized in an asylum.  The track starts slow and picks up steam as it goes.  BatteryThis title could be a reflection of the charge of assault and battery, or it could be inspired by the military hardware of an artillery battery.  There is also a connection to the original San Francisco thrash scene, centered on the Old Waldorf club on Battery Street.  Control of violent urges is a connection that runs through the piece regardless of the original inspiration.Master of PuppetsCocaine addiction is the master of puppets referenced in this title track.  Hetfield had friends experiencing drug addiction, and wrote this track from the perspective of the drug itself, taking over the lives of people.  This will be a familiar song to fans of "Stranger Things." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Loved By the Sun by Jon Anderson and Tangerine Dream (from the motion picture “Legend”)This fantasy film starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was in the theaters at this time. STAFF PICKS:Your Wildest Dreams by the Moody BluesRob starts off the staff picks with a song that singer and guitarist Justin Heyward wrote while thinking back on his first love.  It hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song the biggest commercial success for the Moody Blues since "Knights in White Satin."Mothers Talk by Tears for FearsBruce's staff pick was inspired by a mom telling her kids that when they make faces, they will freeze that way.  It is also inspired by an anti-nuclear cartoon called "When the Wind Blows" by Raymond Briggs.  The song was written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley, and first performed in 1983.  It went to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kiss by Prince & the RevolutionJulie features a chart topping hit and lead single from Prince's eighth studio album, "Parade."  The song is more acoustic and stripped down than prior Prince hits, and Warner Bros. didn't want to release it as a single.  However, Prince insisted on both its inclusion on the album and its release as a single.Addicted to Love by Robert PalmerLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that may be more famous for its video featuring models pretending to play the instruments.  Palmer originally wanted to sing this song as a duet with Chaka Kahn, but was prevented from doing so by legal issues.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Songbird by Kenny G.You just can't go wrong with a sax as we close out today's podcast.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber. The Seeds of Love is the third Tears for Fears album. Although the production was reminiscent of Smile-era Beach Boys with lengthy studio time and abandoned recording sessions costing over £1 million, the album was an international success, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one. Following her work with Tears for Fears, Oleta Adams was offered a recording contract with Fontana Records. Roland Orzabal co-produced her album, Circle of One.The Seeds of Love was remastered and reissued in 1999 with four bonus tracks and was re-reissued in 2020 in five different formats including a 5-disc super deluxe edition boxed set featuring bonus material including, B-sides, demos and outtakes. In 2022, Tears for Fears released their seventh album, The Tipping Point. This is Episode 14 of Season 3 - a huge thank you to the overwhelming numbers of listeners over the past two years as the Low Noise podcast continues to evolve in its own inimitable way. Welcome to another episode of Funky Pearls Radio, where the soul of music lives and legends are celebrated. Today, we're delving into the story of an artist whose voice is a testament to the power of pure emotion and whose journey reminds us that talent knows no bounds. This is the story of Oleta Adams, a singer, songwriter, and pianist whose music transcends genres and touches the heart.Born on May 4, 1953, in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Yakima, Oleta Adams was introduced to music at a young age. With a gospel singer as a father, music was a constant presence in her life, shaping her future and her dreams. Oleta's journey wasn't straightforward; it was a path marked by perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering belief in her own talents.Oleta's career began in the early '70s, playing in hotel bars and clubs, honing her craft, and captivating those who heard her. Her voice, imbued with the depth of gospel and the versatility of jazz and soul, made her a standout artist, yet mainstream success was elusive. It wasn't until the late '80s that her life and career would take a pivotal turn, thanks to an encounter with the British band Tears for Fears. While performing in a Kansas City hotel bar, Oleta's voice caught the attention of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the core members of Tears for Fears. They were so moved by her performance that they invited her to collaborate on their next album, "The Seeds of Love," marking the beginning of her international acclaim. Her rendition of "Woman in Chains" showcased her incredible vocal range and emotional depth, earning her widespread recognition. But it was her solo album, "Circle of One," released in 1990, that truly cemented her place in the music world. The album, produced with the help of Tears for Fears, featured the hit single "Get Here," a ballad that became an anthem of the Gulf War, resonating with families and loved ones separated by the conflict. Oleta Adams' rendition of this song spoke of longing and love with such sincerity and passion that it touched the souls of listeners worldwide.Oleta's music is a celebration of human emotions, from love and longing to strength and resilience. Her albums, including "Evolution," "Moving On," and "Come Walk with Me," further showcase her versatility as an artist and her ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level.Despite the challenges and obstacles she faced, Oleta Adams has remained true to her artistry, her faith, and her unique voice. Her journey teaches us that with talent, determination, and heart, it's possible to overcome the odds and make an indelible mark on the world. Here at Funky Pearls Radio, we honor Oleta Adams not just for her soul-stirring music but for her journey—a reminder that true talent will always find its way. As we continue to celebrate her contributions to music, let's be inspired by her story, her perseverance, and the beautiful legacy she continues to build.Thank you for tuning into Funky Pearls Radio. This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It's not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It's just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Be sure to also check out the Jason Becker documentary “Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet” that we mention.Songs this week include:Anvil Chorus – “Blue Flames” from The Killing Sun (2009)Kirk Hammett – “The Jinn” from Portals - EP (2022)Bruce Kulick – “Ain't Gonna Die” from BK3 (2010)Buckethead – “Welcome To Bucketheadland” from Giant Robot (1994)Tears For Fears – “Broken” from Songs From The Big Chair (1985)Psycho Motel – “Welcome To The World” from Welcome To The World (1997)Cacophony – “Go Off!” from Go Off! (1988) Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Steven Wilson, Roland Orzabal, Lucy Rose and Andy Partridge talk about the effect of fan expectations on the creative process, whether the world needs any more new music, and if “retro mania” is stopping rock music from evolving. Born in London and raised in Hemel Hempstead in the UK, Steven Wilson developed an interest in music as a child and was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. His dad built him a multi-track tape machine when he was 12, which allowed him to start experimenting with sound. He formed two bands in 1986, No Man and Porcupine Tree, both of which came to define much of his career. His music covers everything from rock, to ambient, to electro pop, and he's worked with Elton John, Guns N' Roses, XTC, Pendulum, Yes, Marillion, and Black Sabbath. He's just released his seventh solo album, The Harmony Codex. Roland Orzabal is a British musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and author. He is best known for co-founding of one of the most influential bands from the 80s, Tears for Fears. British singer-songwriter Lucy Rose started out performing with indie act Bombay Bicycle Club before becoming a successful solo artist in her own right. More recently she's worked with Paul Weller, and she's just finished her new album. Andy Partridge is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who, as a founding member of cult rock band XTC, many call the godfather of Britpop.

What the Riff?!?
1989 - October: Aerosmith “Pump”

What the Riff?!?

Aerosmith is a band in two acts.  They were a highly successful group in the 70's, but arguments and drugs left the band a shade of its former self by 1980.  A second chance was presented when the crossover collaboration between Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C. on "Walk this Way" became a number 4 US hit in 1986.  The bad went into drug rehab at the insistence of manager Tim Collins, and had a major hit with their ninth studio album "Permanent Vacation."Aerosmith demonstrated that their second act was not just a fluke with their tenth studio album, Pump, which was even more successful than Permanent Vacation.  This was a significant comeback, re-establishing the band as one of rock's premier acts.  The album was polished and energetic, combining a gritty hard rock sound with pop sensibilities.  The album was not only a commercial success, peaking at number 5 on the US charts and being certified 7x platinum by 1995, but was also a critical success, landing Aerosmith their first Grammy for "Janie's Got a Gun."  Pump was the fourth best-selling album of the year 1990.The band lineup for this album had Steven Tyler on vocals, keyboards, and harmonica, Joe Perry on guitar and backing vocals, Brad Whitford on guitar, Tom Hamiilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums.  Guitarist Brad Whitford explained the album title on a 1989 MTV special by saying "now that we're off drugs, we're all pumped up."  John Lynch brings us this stellar rock and pop sensation this week. Water Song/Janie's Got a GunA 10-second instrumental called "Water Song" precedes the song written by Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton.  The second single from the album went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It describes the revenge of a young woman for the childhood abuse she experienced.  Aerosmith won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for this song.Dulcimer Stomp/The Other SideAnother song with a brief instrumental lead-in, this was the fourth single released from the album.  It was written by Jim Vallance and Steven Tyler, with Holland-Dozier-Holland receiving songwriting credit after threatening to file suit over similarities between this and their song "Standing in the Shadows of Love."  The lyrics are about a turbulent relationship, with the singer wanting to get past the emotional roller-coaster. Monkey on My BackIt is difficult to find a deep cut on this album, but this is one that was not released as a single.  Tyler and Perry wrote this track about the band's struggles with addiction.  It was the first song that Tyler and Perry wrote for the album, and it was composed in November 1988 prior to the end of their Permanent Vacation tour.Going Down/Love In an ElevatorA double entendre-laden skit leads in this double entendre-laden song.  Tyler and Perry wrote this piece, and it was inspired by an actual experience Steven Tyler had where he was making out with a woman in an elevator and the doors opened.  It was nominated for a Grammy in 1990 for Best Hard Rock Performance, but Aerosmith lost out to Living Colour on that one. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television music performance and dance program “American Bandstand” Dick Clark's music show which premiered in March 1952 had its final show on October 7, 1989. STAFF PICKS:Sowing the Seeds of Love by Tears for FearsBruce brings us a Beatles-esque song from the third Tears for Fears album, "Seeds of Love."  It was written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, and hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, their fourth and final entry into the top 10.  Orzabal considers it to be the most overtly political song Tears for Fears had written at the time.  Big Talk by WarrantRob's staff pick is a rocking tune from glam metal band Warrant's first album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich."  This third single from the album made it to number 30 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, though it only made it to number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album went to number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.Pictures of Matchstick Men by Camper Van Beethoven Wayne brings us a cover of the first hit single by Status Quo, released in 1968.  This rendition combines elements of pop, ska, punk, folks, alternative, and country.  the "Matchstick men" reference is to the paintings of L.S. Lowry, and English painter who depicted Salford, Manchester, and other industrial scenes in his works. It's Not Enough by StarshipLynch's staff pick is the second single released off Starship's third album, the first album after Grace Slick left the band.  It went to number 12 on the Billboard charts, the final top 40 hit for the band.  This is the sound that most typified the produced sound of the late 80's.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Flying In a Blue Dream by the Joe SatrianiThe title track to Satriani's third studio album closes out this week's podcast.

Curt Smith is one-half of the band Tears for Fears, along with childhood friend and bandmate Roland Orzabal. Smith and Orzabal met as teenagers in Bath, England and formed a band that would go on to release hit after hit, from “Mad World” to “Shout,” ultimately selling over 30 million albums worldwide. From their debut album in 1983, “The Hurting,” Tears for Fears created a synth-heavy and lyrically complex sound that still resonates with audiences four decades later. Following the release of their latest album, “The Tipping Point,” Alec speaks to Curt Smith about forming a creative partnership bourne out of differing voices, how they found the sound for “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and what led to his departure from the group in the 1990s - and their eventual reunion that happened via fax. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Originally by Tears for Fears. It is a mash-up of Schlich's "People are running in circles" inspired by Tears for Fears "Mad World", which Schlich performed and considered as a psychedelic version with a reference to Surrealism as a healing tool to overcome anxiety in uncertain times like today. This song, published in 1982 by Tears for Fears is about a depressed young person who feels out of place in this world. He sees life as empty and looks for ways to escape the pain. The line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.LyricsMash up Mad World/People are running in circlesby Detlef SchlichPeople are running in circles and dying and running and dyingPeople are running in circles and running and dying and runningAll around me are familiar facesWorn-out places, worn-out facesBright and early for their daily racesGoing nowhere, going nowhereTheir tears are filling up their glassesNo expression, no expressionHide my head I want to drown my sorrowNo tomorrow, no tomorrowAnd I find it kind of funnyI find it kind of sadThe dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever hadI find it hard to tell you 'cause I find it hard to takeWhen people run in circles it's a very, veryMad worldMad worldMad worldMad worldChildren waiting for the day they feel goodHappy birthday, happy birthdayMade to feel the way that every child shouldSit and listen, sit and listenWent to school and I was very nervousNo one knew me, no one knew meHello teacher tell me what's my lessonLook right through me, look right through meAnd I find it kind of funnyI find it kind of sadThe dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever hadI find it hard to tell you 'cause I find it hard to takeWhen people run in circles it's a very, veryMad worldMad worldMad worldMad worldPeople are running in circles and dying and running and dyingPeople are running in circles and running and dying and runningPeople are running in circles and dying and running and dyingPeople are running in circles and running and dying and runningAnd I find it kind of funnyI find it kind of sadThe dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever hadI find it hard to tell you 'cause I find it hard to takeWhen people run in circles it's a very, veryMad worldHalargian WorldMad worldArTEEtude is West Cork´s podcast for Art, [digital] Culture and true stories, created and produced by Detlef Schlich. Tears for Fears comes from Bath, England, and were formed by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.  Their first album, "The Hurting" was released in 1983 and was successful with songs like "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter."  However, their second album entitled Songs from the Big Chair, a title taken from the motion picture "Sybil" would be the one to propel them to super-stardom.  It peaked at number 2 in the UK and number 1 in the US.  In addition to Orzabal and Smith, Ian Stanley is on keyboards, and Manny Elias is on drums and drum arrangement.Orzabal and Smith were inspired by electronic and synth-pop bands like Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark.  They started off as a duo initially called History of Headaches.  The name Tears for Fears comes from primal therapy, a psychological treatment developed by Arthur Janov.Shortly after their follow-up third album ”The Seeds of Love,” Orzabal and Smith had a big falling out, breaking up the band in 1991.  They would get back together in 2000, and are still touring and releasing albums today. Everybody Wants to Rule the WorldThis is the signature song from the album.  Bassist Curt Smith takes the lead vocals, and the lyrics are about the desire for power and about corruption.  It was a last minute addition to the album and was recorded in two weeks as the final track to be laid down.  ShoutThe lead-off track and second single to the album features Orzabal on lead vocals.  While many think this is about primal scream theory, Orzabal has said it is actually more about political protest.BrokenThis is a short piece with lyrics that have an angst-ridden declaration that we are all broken.  It is also commonly played in concert just in front of the next piece which also reprises Broken at the end.  Head Over HeelsThis is your classic “boy obsesses over girl” song.  It was released as the fourth single from the album, but it had been bouncing around for about 2 years along with Broken.  Orzabal takes vocal lead on this one. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Neutron Dance by The Pointer Sisters (from the motion picture "Beverly Hills Cop”)Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop propelled both his career and this song originally appearing on a 1983 album to the top. STAFF PICKS:If I Had A Rocket Launcher by Bruce CockburnWayne launches the staff picks with a protest song from Canada's own Bruce Cockburn.  The song lyrics tell the story from the perspective of the villagers experiencing warfare but being powerless to do anything about it.Valotte by Julian LennonRob brings us the title track from Julian Lennon's debut studio album.  The resemblance between Julian and his father are obvious.  Many think the river referenced is the Tennessee River near Muscle Shoals where portions of the album were recorded.I Can't Hold Back by SurvivorBrian demonstrates that Survivor wasn't a one-hit wonder after all.  It starts with a nice acoustic guitar and builds quickly.  This single reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This is the first album with Jimi Jamison on lead vocals.Sunset Grill by Don HenleyBruce finishes off the staff picks with the ex Eagles' single that hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Sunset Grill is a hamburger restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.  The Austrian restaurant owner didn't know that his frequent visitor was Don Henley until after the song came out, making their hole-in-the-wall burger joint famous. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Listen by the Tears for FearsWe do a little double-dipping with this (almost) instrumental from "Songs From the Big Chair."

Curt Smith joins Behind the Setlist to talk about Tears for Fears' new album, The Tipping Point, his excitement to play the new songs live, how to choose songs for concerts, his opinion on encores and much more. Smith and bandmate Roland Orzabal first hit the charts in the U.K. in 1982 with "Mad World." For a time, the band performed the song to sound like the darker Gary Jules and Michael Andrews version that was featured on the soundtrack to the film Donnie Darko in 2001. They have also performed the song acoustically and with a full choir. "To me, it's the strength of a song that allows it to be done in many different ways. If the song doesn't fall flat, then obviously the song itself is the strength, it's not necessarily the recording," says Smith. To his point, "Mad World" has been covered by Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Pentatonix, Susan Boyle, Brandi Carlile and most recently Demi Lovato. These days, "Mad World" is one of a handful of tracks from the group's 1983 debut, The Hurting, that's certain to played on the band's current U.S. tour and the U.K. tour that begins in July. "Change," "Pale Shelter" and "Suffer the Children" are setlist standards. So are "Break It Down Again" from 1993's Elemental and two songs from 1989's The Seeds of Love: "Woman in Chains" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love." Fans will also hear the band's hits from the group's 1985 smash album, Songs From The Big Chair: "Shout," "Head Over Heals/Broken" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." In years past, Tears for Fears usually covered Radiohead's "Creep" in their sets. That may not make the final cut as the band makes room for new songs. As for new material, Smith is excited to find out how they transfer to the stage. "The fun part of the first week to two weeks of touring is, you may not have got it right," he says. "And you may want to change things for the first bunch of shows. So until you get in front of an audience, you don't know 100% what's going to work." The day Roland Orzabal laid eyes on a handsome Indian looking fellow in Bath England, (he wasn't Indian), Curt Smith and Roland became a musical force that eventually became Tears for Fears. They came to rule the world in the 80's, split up in the 90's, and reformed in the 00's. They just released a new record that's right on par with the rest of their catalog. For this week's episode of This Band Could Be Your Food, I travel to Asheville NC to talk with the number one Tears for Fears fan in my orbit, Ross Britton. We will discuss the musical history of the band beginning with their mod group, Graduate, who the coolest member of Tears for Fears is, (hint- it's not Curt or Roland), the meticulous process that the band undergoes when making new records, and prepare one of the most involved dishes in TBCBYF history. "That gave me the idea that men, God even, is impotent, is unreliable." 80s pop icons Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith of Tears for Fears talk through what they learned growing up, their musical career span and their latest album, The Tipping Point.

From the earliest beginnings of 1983's The Hurting to the band's huge 1985 LP Songs From The Big Chair, Tears For Fears songs captured sadness, ambition, pain - confessional levels of emotional honesty. All this conveyed with the magic touch of songwriters who were also not afraid to get weird. But as the 80s music scene spun out of control so did Tears For Fears, famously making one of the longest, most tortuous and expensive albums in history in The Seeds Of Love. The aim was flawlessness but the result was a flawed masterpiece, an album that literally exhausted the band (at least as a duo) until a reformation 15 years later. When they came back in 2004 with Everyone Loves a Happy Ending. Roland Orzabal describes that record as “Seeds Of Love's little brother…it was lighter but the songs lacked the emotional honesty”. But now Tears For Fears are back. In this streaming age of always-on music, when most artists are terrified to take a month off, let alone a year, let alone 18 years, Tears For Fears return with brand new album The Tipping Point. It comes at a time when their music is back in vogue (a gentle groundswell has seen more than 140 versions of Everybody Wants To Rule The World dropped onto streaming services in the past decade or so, urging the song towards one billion streams). The duo has always navigated an intriguing relationship, often distanced from each other. Yet the two troubled souls that grew up together have come to accept each other as brothers, musically speaking. In the band's early years, it was Curt who sang the hits and appeared to be the frontman and pop star of the band, with Roland the “backroom boy” (his words). Yet Roland stepped forth to dominate on The Seeds Of Love, his “musical Tourette's” allowed to run amok. But a recent revelation is how Roland has learned to listen to Curt again. "When I saw were he was coming from the process of making the record became a joy. I felt the wind was blowing in our favour". It is Curt's self-critical leanings that stepped-in on The Tipping Point, firstly to throw out most of a batch of songs written in a ‘songwriting camp' (a fascinating and tragicomic scenario in a way given the songs written as a duo). Second, to step forward once again as co-lead singer and a co-writer in Tears For Fears as a duo, not a committee of songwriters. The band is even enjoying their time in the music industry's fickle spotlight together once again - from Zoom calls to accepting the Ivor's lifetime award. “Curt and I have both got something to say and they are very different things”. And here's the rub. Tears For Fears are back into the culture at a time when many of their 80s peers, from Duran Duran to Gary Numan to Aha, are in fine form, making great records and sounding fabulous live too. After the two years we've spent at home, the contagion we now need is to see legends playing truly great pop songs with smiles on their faces. Forget 2004, the happy ending is happening right now and long may it last. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

Roland Orzabal became one of the biggest selling pop stars of the eighties with Tears For Fears. In songs like Pale Shelter, Mad World and Shout he wrapped deeply sensitive, introspective lyrics in the sound of lush synth pop. He and his band mate Curt Smith were talking about mental health long before it was fashionable. Now they are back with the stunning Tipping Point - an album that, among other things, reflects on the death of Roland's wife in 2017 and his subsequent struggles with booze and drugs. He joined me to discuss this and so much more in what was a powerfully honest chat. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Congratulations to TFF for making a great new record in 2021. But this exciting hit (#5 UK, #2 USA) was my first meeting with Tears For Fears. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had already had hits like “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. But this was something different! Daisy Chute chats with me about how we sowed many seeds of love in the studio and why it's impossible to park if you have a gig at the London Oriental Mandarin Hotel! Let's drop some acid and listen to how we made this record with a little help from Guy Barker and Kate St. John. As Curt said, “We wanted to do something more colourful, something that sounded big and warm. You cannot get that from machines. You only get that with real musicians and real players." Scot and Jeff discuss Tears For Fears with Sean Hackbarth. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Sean Hackbarth. Sean is a long time blogger — so long they were called, “weblogs,” — and currently is a writer and editor at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Find him online @seanhackbarth on Twitter. Sean's Music Pick: Tears For Fears There are some (many?) out there who might only think of Tears For Fears as a one- album wonder. Songs from the Big Chair was rightfully a smash, with three massive hits. But the boys at Political Beats are here to tell you why it's well worth while to dig into the rest of their discography. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith made great music both before and after the massive chart success. And, in fact, why one album from the 1990s and one from the 2000s deserve space in the conversation about the band's best work. You could say there will be a lot of hurting, as we've been laid so low and broken down again in our attempts to fully appreciate Tears For Fears's work. Come along, shout the lyrics if you know them, and leave yourself open to the possibility that you'll fall head over heels for some previously unheard music.
