The Paris Olympics kicks off Friday, starting the countdown until the games come to Los Angeles in 2028. During the 2028 games, the L.A. Memorial Coliseum will again host the track and field and Para Athletics events, making it the only stadium in history to host these competitions for three different Olympic Games. To celebrate this milestone, we want to revisit the Coliseum's history and replay this episode from 2023…during the stadium's centennial year! #147: The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of several L.A. landmarks hitting the century mark this year, and we thought it'd be fun to take a look back on them as we celebrate our one-year anniversary of How To LA this September. We explored The Biltmore Hotel downtown (if you haven't listened to that episode already) and we'll be featuring the story behind the Hollywood sign pretty soon. When it comes to the L.A. Coliseum (the "memorial" in the full name refers to the fact that the stadium is a memorial to the Americans who served in WWI) there's no denying that it has a rich history. For example, it played a role in the desegregation of the NFL, and it will soon be the first location to ever host three Olympic Games. But the stadium's history goes way beyond sports. Guests: Frank Guridy, Professor of History and African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University, and author of the forthcoming book, "The Stadium: An American History of Politics, Protest, and Play" William Deverell, Historian at USC and Director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West Marina Fote, Assistant to the General Manager, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum The performances from Wattstax in this episode are Carla Thomas singing "Pick Up the Pieces" and The Bar-Kays performing "Son of Shaft/Feel It"

The podcast series, "As yet Unexplained" is thrilled to announce their latest episode, "Celebrity Séances." This new installment takes listeners on a captivating journey through the fascinating world of séances and their connection to some of the most notable figures in history. The episode kicks off with a deep dive into the often under-explored tradition of séances conducted to communicate with the late Elvis Presley, the legendary King of Rock and Roll. It explores the mass séance at Memorial Coliseum, the unique "The Elvis Presley Séance" album, and the yearly tradition of hosting Elvis séances. The narrative then shifts focus to the séances conducted in an attempt to reach out to the celebrated magician, Harry Houdini. Despite his scepticism towards spiritualism and his lifelong mission to debunk fraudulent mediums, Houdini made a promise to send a message from the afterlife, leading to the annual tradition of the Houdini séance. The episode concludes with a look into the séances conducted by the First Ladies of the United States during the Victorian Age. Both Jane Pierce and Mary Lincoln, having suffered the loss of their young sons, resorted to séances in a desperate attempt to communicate with their deceased children. The "As yet Unexplained" podcast continues its mission to illuminate the unexplained and offer fresh perspectives on our world. The "Celebrity Séances" episode underscores the enduring allure of the afterlife and the tantalizing possibility of communicating with the departed, notwithstanding the absence of scientific proof.Listeners can access the "As yet Unexplained" podcast on their preferred podcast platform, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Audible. In September 1957 baseball's Dodgers, who'd called Brooklyn home since 1884, and Ebbets Field since 1913, played their final games in Flatbush. They'd been World Champions just two years earlier. Simultaneously, over in northern Manhattan, The New York Giants, champions in 1954, and at home near Coogan's Bluff since 1883, played their final game overlooking the Harlem River. Both teams would move three-thousand miles west to California. The Dodgers would settle in Los Angeles, first at Memorial Coliseum and then in the famed Dodger Stadium, winning the 1959 World Series, and five more in the years since. The Giants moved to San Francisco, played their home games at the mercilessly windy Candlestick Park, before moving to a new stadium in 2000, winning three world titles in the twenty-first century. New York would be left without a National League team to rival the cross-town Yankees for five years, until the New York Metropolitans, colloquially known as the Mets, were formed. They're winners of two world championships of their own. In 1960 hall of fame pitcher Bob Feller, hosting a syndicated show, spoke about that last Giants baseball weekend at the Polo Grounds. There's an old adage that says “change is life's only constant.” Post-War hope turned into labor strife and a baby boom, which gave rise to the most profitable radio year in history—1948—leading directly to the TV era. The new deal was more than ten years old and an urban diaspora, guided by white flight and atomic fear, brought families to newly blossomed suburban communities and left cities wondering what the future held. More uncertainty lay ahead. Four days into October, the USSR would launch Sputnik I, the first artificial Earth-orbiting satellite. Everybody's lives got a little nearer, and yet a little further apart. But, if they wanted to feel close, all they had to do was tune on a radio to a CBS affiliate Sunday afternoons as George Walsh breathed “and now” to open for Suspense. They'd perhaps remember a time when Jack Benny drove radio ratings, while his cast drove him crazy. To a time when Tuesday nights meant NBC with Fibber Mcgee and Molly, Bob Hope, and Red Skelton. When Thursdays meant Crosby, Suspense, and Burns and Allen. And to a time when Norman Corwin helped remember what brought us home. It's where we're all going anyway. More specifically, it's where we're heading next month.

Since we just examined Rolling Stones and Living Colour, let us round out the trifecta with the 3rd band to play LA's Memorial Coliseum back in October of 1988. GnR happened to be pushing their second major release, Lies, featuring the dumpster-fire-of-a-song One in A Million, which effectively polarized fans, critics, and their own band members. For this episode I talk with Dan Hinkel, a former writer for the Chicago Tribune as well as an old neighbor from my hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin. It is arguably the most architecturally unique arena in the United States, offering 360-degree views from its seats: a pioneeringly pristine midcentury-modern glass box born from the optimistic days of JFK and the NASA space program. It has hosted some of the city's most memorable cultural moments, including the Portland Trail Blazers' 1977 NBA championship and concerts by nearly every iconic 20th century rock and pop act, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Elvis Pressley, Bob Dylan, Queen, Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie, not to mention inspiring speeches by transcendent leaders like The Dalai Lama and Barack Obama. The arena has a dark side: many Black-owned homes were demolished to make way for it. But in the future, a restored Coliseum is poised to become the cultural centerpiece of a reborn Albina neighborhood.

For the first time since Episode 47 with Dennis Seese, we dial back to US pro soccer's optimistic but tenuous late 1960's reboot, with Derek Liecty - the founding general manager of one the period's most successful (yet historically overlooked) teams, the Oakland (née California) Clippers. One of ten inaugural franchises in the renegade National Professional Soccer League - one of two competing attempts to launch true "Division One" soccer in North America (the other being an officially FIFA-sanctioned 12-team United Soccer Association) in the spring of 1967 - the Clippers were unquestionably the NPSL's best club. Stocked with a pipeline of top Yugoslavian imports (including NPSL All-Stars Ilija Mitic and Mirko Stojanovic), the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum-based club captured the regular season title with 19-8-5 record (23 points better than the second-best Baltimore Bays), and were undefeated at home. The Clippers bested the Bays in the two-game NPSL championship final (4-2 on aggregate) and also claimed an unprecedented "treble" by defeating the division runner-up St. Louis Stars for the league's post-championship "Commissioner's Cup." Survivors of an off-season NPSL-USA merger, the Clippers continued their winning ways in the new 17-team North American Soccer League - tying for most wins (18), scoring the most goals (71), posting the second-best point total (185), and sending five players to the 1968 NASL All-Star team. But due to a quirk in the league's distortional divisional points system, the club oddly missed the four-team playoff cut - and were denied a chance to defend its NPSL title. When the NASL contracted to just five clubs at season's end, Oakland owners Joseph O'Neill and H.T. Hilliard opted instead for a more lucrative series of independent international exhibitions; renamed again as the California Clippers, the team played top teams such as Atlas, Chivas, USSR champion Dynamo Kiev, and Italian champion Fiorentina at stadiums across the state (including LA's Memorial Coliseum). O'Neill and Hillard pulled the plug for good in June 1969, when the US Soccer Federation refused to sanction further matches.

President Donald Trump's Arizona visit on Tuesday is his first since the Feb. 19 rally at the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum. This time he's visiting a Honeywell facility, which turned to producing N95 respirator masks at the end of March. The visit comes at an interesting time. The 2020 campaign season has halted its usual door-to-door tactics in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, pivoting to digital outreach instead. Trump's stop in Arizona marks a potential return to in-person campaigning. In this bonus episode of The Gaggle: An Arizona politics podcast, hosts Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Ronald J. Hansen interview Ronna McDaniel, Chair of the Republican National Committee. She outlined how the RNC plans to support Republican candidates in Arizona during this unprecedented time.

The OSG Sports team talks everything College Football. This weeks show includes Missouri vs. The NCAA, USC in trouble again for trying to sell naming rights to L.A. Memorial Coliseum, Spring Football injuries at Clemson and so much more....
L.A.'s Memorial Coliseum has been playing host to college football, NFL football, two Olympics, baseball games, concerts and countless more events since 1923......a lot has changed about the Coliseum over the decades, but the name has renamed a constant: that simple name was tribute to all who served in the armed forces in World War I. But the name could soon change to the "United Airlines" Memorial Coliseum, after USC signed a corporate naming rights deal---and veterans have some things to say about that plan. We will go In Depth. Just about everyone can agree that driving through the streets of L.A.'s Westside is patience-testing and headache-inducing. But is a 4-dollar congestion fee the answer to easing traffic? That idea has been proposed, and we will discuss it. Hope springs eternal on this opening day of the 2019 baseball season, where every team still has a chance to win a World Series. For the Dodgers, who have come up short in that goal for two straight years, opening day is about starting over---we talk with Dodgers great Orel Hershiser on this first day of baseball. Facebook is in trouble again, this time accused of facilitating housing discrimination through its advertising formula. And Disneyland is giving the boot to smokers and double-wide strollers, as it makes room for the new Star Wars attraction. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information. This episode I’m speaking with Brian Libby, a journalist and critic living in Portland, Oregon. Among the magazines and newspapers he has contributed to include The New York Times, The Atlantic, Dwell, CityLab, Metropolis, and Architectural Record. Brian is also a book author, filmmaker, and runs the popular Portland Architecture blog. Though episode three admittedly tends to be a bit Portland-centric, it's still interesting for anyone listening. Brian talks about the current housing crisis in Portland, some of his favorite, current projects on the books, efforts behind the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, and what it’s like to write for the New York Times.
Adam and Adam discuss the evolution of the Phoenix Suns. From the franchise's 1968-69 inception, through to the 1993 NBA Finals. We cover a wide range of topics. You'll soon learn why Adam is a true Phoenix Suns ‘Super Fan’. When he was a young boy, the Suns were Phoenix's only professional sports team. We chat about the 1976 season and the Suns' improbable first trip to the NBA Finals. That 1976 team was lovingly referred to as the 'Sunderella Suns'. Earlier this year, Tom Leander released a fantastic documentary - of the same name - devoted to the 40th anniversary of that iconic squad [Part I | Part II]. Our main topic of discussion, focuses on how the Suns franchise was rebuilt from the ground-up, throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, culminating with their 1993 NBA Finals appearance. We cover some of the off-court issues that plagued the team during the 1980s, then discuss the tragic death of promising Suns center, Nick Vanos. Plus, Adam has a great story about the 1988 NBA Draft and the aftermath of the Suns selecting Dan Majerle. It wouldn't be a conversation about the Phoenix Suns, if we didn't chat about Tom Chambers' insane jam over Mark Jackson. In November, 1990, Adam sat next to photographers, near the basket support at Memorial Coliseum, to watch the visiting Chicago Bulls - who went on to win the 1991 NBA Finals - take on the Phoenix Suns. He talks about his unique view and memories of that game. The Suns continued to strengthen their roster and all the pieces fell into place, when they traded for Charles Barkley, not long after the 1992 NBA Finals. We talk about the 1993 post-season. Phoenix narrowly escaped a first-round humiliation to the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Westphal boldly predicted the Suns would win in five games, which they did. We then discuss the 1993 NBA Finals and how the Suns worked their way back into the series, after losing their first two (home) games at America West Arena. As per usual, the conversation is scattered with humor and plenty of insight. A must-listen, for die-hard NBA fans, regardless of the team you support. The most prominent players mentioned in this episode, include: Curtis Perry, Kevin Johnson, Alvan Adams, Michael Jordan, Larry Nance, Tim Perry, Cedric Ceballos, Mike D'Antoni & Steve Nash. Statistics mentioned, are often courtesy of Basketball-Reference. Jim Lee is a regular visitor to city council meetings, frequently encouraging leaders to improve the quality of the city's publicly-owned venues. 00:28 Jim talks about art that's affected him."In 1995 I was in Ferrara, Italy, giving an acoustics paper at a convention. Ferrara has a provincial opera house that dates from the 1790s. They put on Mozart's "Magic Flute" for us. A period opera in a period house. Period instruments. That absolutely blew my mind." 03:30 On his vision for Portland and its arts and cultural landscape in the next five years? "Portland needs a world-class symphony orchestra,world-class ballet, world-class opera." 08:54 On RACC's budget?"It's partly because of the mess-up we've done with the Coliseum, we do not have enough operating funds for other artistic facilities."13:00 On priorities if Jim were elected and named to oversee the city's arts portfolio "Increasing the funding, getting Memorial Coliseum back into an operation where it provides operating funds. That's things you can do."15:30 On housing issues."In my neighborhood, Southwest Woodstock, we've seen a lot of tearing down of old houses… They will tear one down and put up two slot-houses….the whole financial situation now is set up to benefit high income-earners."19:25 On rising costs for commercial real estate. 23:15 On ensuring equity in the arts 29:00One place in the city Jim wants to work on. "Washington High School. It happens to be the high school that educated the world's only two-time solo Nobel Laureate winner — Linus Pauling….I'm wondering why given we can claim this tremendous scientific character, why we can't use this high school — call it the Ava and Linus Pauling High School for the Humanities and put arts in there and sciences."

Colin Marshall sits down above downtown Los Angeles in the U.S. Bank tower with Stephen Gee, senior producer at ITV Studios and author of Iconic Vision: John Parkinson, Architect of Los Angeles, the first book on the man who designed such landmark structures in the city as Union Station, the Memorial Coliseum, Bullock's Wilshire, and City Hall. They discuss how such a visionary could have gone unknown so long; Los Angeles' relationship to its public buildings; Parkinson's notion, during a time when Los Angeles set about defining itself, of putting up a built environment that would leave people inspired; the neatness, elegance, and organization that characterize a Parkinson building; the city's assumption that Parkinson would remain a household name for generations to come, and how World War II and the years after threw that off; Parkinson's move from England, and his own move from England in 1995; his struggle to find information related to the architect, and how everything new he learned made him want to learn more (as also happens with knowledge about the city of Los Angeles itself); how you engage better with Los Angeles after coming to understand its original intention; how to break down the false images of the city the rest of the world gets fed; Los Angeles as "the city of the future" in most or all eras of its existence; the modern repurposing of Parkinson buildings, into apartments and retail spaces and law schools; Iconic Vision's origin as, and possible future as, a television documentary; the new relevance of Parkinson buildings in an era when Angelenos have begun to regard and use the city differently; what he learned when he assembled of Parkinson's buildings, from Los Angeles and elsewhere, "in one place"; and what might architecturally excite the always forward-looking Parkinson in this always forward-looking city today.
