Hank Williams' 1952 song, Jambalaya On The Bayou, was the first time much of the world heard anything about us. What at first-listen to most people sounded like a bunch of nonsense syllables like Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, turned out to be a menu of Cajun dishes – Jambalaya, crawfish pie, file gumbo. Today, if you're from Acadiana and you travel the world, when you've been away from home long enough you might find yourself tempted to try Cajun food someplace else. And, though you may be in a pretty Parisian bistro, or a cool café in Quebec, you feel confident declaring the jambalaya or the gumbo doesn't taste right. Because we invented these dishes, we set the standard for this kind of cuisine. But what happens when you strip away our homefield advantage? When it comes to other types of consumables, how do we stack up here in Acadiana? Let's start with the two most popular and universally consumed human-made libations: coffee and beer. Is it fair to compare Acadiana coffee to, say, Colombian coffee? Or our local brew to German beer? Well, if we're going to hold them to our Jambalaya and Gumbo standard, they're entitled to hold us to their beer and coffee standard. Colombia is one of the coffee capitals of the world. So, if you live in Abbeville Louisiana, with a population of around 12,000, you couldn't expect to get a cup of fine Colombian coffee. Right? Wrong. Because one of those 12,000 people in Abbeville is Natalia Hernandez Choate, who happens to be from Colombia, you can go to Nube9 Coffee, or visit Nube9 online, and get yourself a cup - or a gallon - of genuine Colombian coffee. You can also get a bag of Natalia's freshly imported Colombian coffee beans. Or you can pick up a bag of Nube9 beans at a number of select stores across Acadiana. By and large here in Acadiana, we like things the way they are. We don't like change. Maybe you grew up in Calcasieu Parish drinking Budweiser, believing it's “The king of beers.” In that case your concept of monarchy might need a little re-education. That was the program Eric Avery found himself embarking on in 2016 when he opened Crying Eagle Brewing Company in Lake Charles. Today Crying Eagle is a local staple. They have 20 craft beers on tap at their brew pub. They have a bistro, a beer garden, a tap room, and live music most nights. They introduce at least one new beer to the lineup every week. And they have 8 beers for sale in cans. The brewery employs 40 people. And how are they doing on the beer equivalent of the Jambalaya and Gumbo Scale? Pretty darn good. The Independent Craft Brewer's Association described Crying Eagle's “Divine Imagination” Double IPA as a "world class beer of superlative character and flawless execution." When someone calls you up and suggests going to get a cup of coffee or a beer, you know they don't mean it literally. The coffee or the beer are a reason to get together and socialize. But the coffee on the table or the beer on the bar are far from irrelevant. I'm not sure that anyone's done a study on this, but I think you'll agree, it seems like better coffee and better beer make for better conversation and better occasions. So, Natalia and Eric, are not just responsible for producing thirst-quenching liquids, they're contributing to our happiness, and enhancing our relationships. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show by Giada Morgan at itsacadiana.com. https://youtube.com/live/hSlD44tDI2Q JANE'S ADDICTION has canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour following an onstage altercation between singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro at their September 13 concert in Boston. The incident occurred when Farrell bumped into Navarro and appeared to shout at him. Navarro responded by placing a hand between them, after which Farrell seemed to throw a punch. A crew member intervened to break up the situation. On September 16, the band members—Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins—released a statement citing Farrell's mental health as the reason for canceling the tour: "Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour." The band expressed regret but emphasized concern for everyone's safety and the inability to ensure a quality performance. Refunds will be available at points of purchase or third-party platforms. Farrell's wife, Etty Lau Farrell, detailed the tension leading up to the Boston incident on Instagram, explaining that Perry had been frustrated by the band's volume, which he felt drowned out his voice. Struggling with tinnitus and throat issues, Farrell became upset when the band began playing “Ocean Size” before he was ready, causing him to scream to be heard. Etty also alleged that Avery put Perry in a headlock and punched him before the altercation was broken up. Despite Farrell being seen drinking wine during performances, Etty clarified that alcohol was not a significant factor, noting the wine was mostly for show. This tour marked Navarro's return after missing previous tours due to long COVID, with Troy Van Leeuwen and Josh Klinghoffer filling in during his absence.
In the wild days of Grunge, Jane's Addiction self immolated and cut themselves in twain. On one side, we had Perry Farrell's Porno For Pyros and on the other we had Deconstruction featuring Dave Navarro and Eric Avery. One of them went on to success on MTV and even started a new touring rock festival and the other one, Deconstruction, is whom we're discussing today! Find out if we should spin it or bin it.

By Kris PetersWith the sudden influx of international touring artists currently setting their sights on Australia, the concert going public are understandably selective when it comes to venturing out.But one travelling musical spectacle that is impossible to resist is The World Is A Vampire Festival - led by The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction - which kicks off on April 15 in Brisbane before taking in Bribie Island, Sydney, Melbourne, Ballarat, Adelaide and Newcastle before finishing up on the Gold Coast on April 30.Not only will fans be treated to two of the biggest and most successful bands of the last four decades, they will also have the chance to witness world wrestling live and like never before as Billy Corgan's troupe lines up against their Australian counterparts in a display of controlled hostility unlike anything witnessed on these shores before.Throw in Australian bands like Amyl & The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake as well as select local supports and you have the makings of one of the biggest and best festivals to hit Down Under since forever. On the eve of their long journey to Australia, HEAVY had the privilege of sitting down for a chat with Jane's Addiction members Perry Farrell (vocals), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums) for an entertaining insight into what to expect."I'm just starting to pull out the boots," Farrell laughed when asked if the band had started packing yet. ""It was great to hear the list of shows said by an Australian," Perkins added, "because we've been looking at that list for the last two weeks and now I know where we're playing (laughs). We just got back from South America, so I didn't really unpack but I did wash everything and changed some ideas, but we're ready!"It's a long run of shows for all of the bands involved, so we press the boys on how they prepare mentally for a tour like this."We know Eric does his homework last," Farrell smiled. "For me, I start to imagine the stage. I start to imagine the people in the place and then I start to imagine what I would wear and like I say, I start with my feet because you don't wanna get up there with bad shoes (laughs). It will just bum your night out.""I play barefoot on the drumset," Perkins chimed in. "No gloves, no shoes or socks, but luckily I've got a room with a drum set here at the house so I've been playing every day and taking care of the mental side and keeping stimulated creatively. That's real important. Because the physical thing, I always keep tuned up. My stamina and endurance is always number one importance and always trying to stay with that creative juice so I can get up there and just hit the stage running."In the full interview the boys tell us what to expect from the shows, the wrestling side of things and the possibility of the bands getting involved, their previous manager, Australian Ted Gardner and some fun stories of him, their knowledge of the Australian bands playing including Perry taking his daughter to see Amyl & The Sniffers, the bands longevity and why plus more.

Although Nirvana seems to get the credit for opening the world to the Alternative Nation, Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell was the one who literally coined the term “Alternative Nation.” After releasing three groundbreaking records, the band broke up in 1991. They have had various attempts at reviving its legacy, and are making a strong claim recently by welcoming back founding member Eric Avery. What a coincidence that Nick Cialdini and I, two Wisconsinites moonlighting in Italy, had an in-depth conversation about Jane's Addiction over a tasty meal this summer. hér kemur smá texti um Ritual de lo Habitual með Jane?s Addiction og mynd af mér með plötuna í kaupbæti tekna í eldhúsinu heima hjá mér.

Today on the Pumpkast, we hop across the pond (socially distanced via Zencastr) to chat with touring Smashing Pumpkins bassist and all-around great guy, Jack Bates! Jack tells us about meeting Billy for the first time when Corgan sat in with New Order, and the journey from there to being asked to join the Pumpkins while on tour with his Dad's band Peter Hook and the Light. He also recalls all the work and rehearsal that went into the 'Shiny' tour, getting to take the piss out of fellow British football fans while touring with Noel Gallagher, and what it’s like playing with the greatest living rock drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain! Jack also shares his love of Dinosaur Jr., Eric Avery and Metallica, and gives a very important note to the current bassist in New Order. This week we’re talking about Jane’s Addiction. While these days Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro are household names in rock (and reality TV), they began as a shockingly innovative alt rock band in the late 80s. Jane’s Addiction earned every reputation they ever had: great musicians, great performers, and narcissistic heroin junkies. With the possible exception of bassist Eric Avery, these are not good dudes. Rockin’ tunes, though.Closing track: “Summertime Rolls” from Nothing’s Shocking (1988)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify!https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincJoin our Patreon for bonus episodes, early access to shows, and more!https://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverFollow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura for show updates and @pandermonkey for original musicFollow Alex on Instagram @motherpuncherMike’s Picks:Nothing’s Shocking (1988) — Best Album Personal FavoriteThe Great Escape Artist (2011) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex’s Picks:Nothing’s Shocking (1988) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteStrays (2003) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Nothing’s Shocking (1988)Ritual de lo habitual (1990) Strays (2003)The Great Escape Artist (2011)

Mo's long residence in Shanghai, China, and the types of guitars you can get there Jane's Addiction's surge in late-80s Los Angeles and their cultural influence Who Jane was, and why it was probably not great for Perry Farrell to write a song that uses her name The hippy vibe of "Summertime Rolls" The influence of Jane's on Mo and his friend MC Frontalot What it was that Ted should "Just admit" on "Just Admit It, Ted..." Whether the lyrics in "Standing in the Shower... Thinking" really say "The water is a-piping hot" or something less wholesome What the "Pigs" represent in "Pigs in Zen"... and for that matter, what "Zen" is in that song, too Our key tracks and a preview of next week's episode! Newtown Performing Arts high school was a melting pot of extraverted dancers, actors and musicians. But even amongst a school full of characters, Eric Avery stood out. He now works as a professional artist. I found out about that, as well as a new relationship that’s lead him to Darwin, and his experience as a gay, Indigenous man. There were a projected six episodes for the illustrious third season of the podcast, however, due to 'dat rona, only five of those episodes were recorded prior to 'social distancing' and 'self-quarantining,' and overall, the production and release of those five episodes was rushed and moved up. With that being said, for the first episode of season three, I welcome my co-worker Molly to the program. She and I have only worked together for like five or six months, but almost immediately after meeting her, I knew she'd be a great guest on the podcast; and I was right. We had some laughs, and we got really real, as Molly played a mix of tunes dating back through her high school years in Wisconsin, her early 20s in the Pacific Northwest, and her return to the midwest. “Nothing’s Shocking” by Jane’s Addiction Wayne presents this album, “Nothing's Shocking,” — the first studio album by Jane's Addiction. This alternative rock band from Los Angeles had released a self-titled live album in 1987. Perry Farrell was the lead singer and writer for the group. The group would break up in the early 90's over how to split the money. Although tensions in the band would drive the split, their heavy, angry, wall-of-sound approach would lead the way for the grunge music to come a few years later. We hope you enjoy this heavy hitting feature. “Idiots Rule” This funky rock song with special guest Flea (of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame) on horns starts heavy and drives on through the track. “Ocean Size” This track explains the mentality of a surfer, and the desire to be near the waves. Perry Farrell wrote this at a low point in his life. “Had a Dad” Here is a rare guitar solo at the beginning of the song. This track is about Eric Avery finding out that the person he believed was his biological father was actually his stepfather. “Mountain Song” Not really about a mountain, but about coming down from an acid trip. This song got a little air play at the time, though not as much as “Jane Says.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from “Roseanne” This was the first run of the show — it launched in August of 1988 and ran through 1977. STAFF PICKS: “Look Out Any Window” by Bruce Hornsby and the Range Brian shares this single from Hornsby's second studio album. It features complex piano work and progressive lyrics. “No Smoke without a Fire” by Bad Company Rob picked this hit from the post-Paul Rodgers days. It features vocalist Brian Howe on this late 80's hit. “The Only One” by Jimmy Page This was from Page's lone solo album, and Bruce got into it. It was an obvious hit with Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant's vocal contributions. Jason Bonham is on drums as well “Let it Roll” by Little Feat The re-formed Little Feat produced this fast moving and very popular track with a Southern Rock boogie feel. Wayne says, “She's like a smooth stretch of highway.” LAUGH TRACK: “Don’t Worry, be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin We feature the opposite of an instrumental piece on this acapella track to finish up the session this week. Be Happy, folks!
Eric & Avery are back and roll through all the games in week 10, playoff possibilities, and more.
Eric & Avery pontificate on the upcoming games and wax poetic on some random football topics.
EP 7: Stephen Perkins Stephen Perkins is a drummer from Los Angeles and is well known for being the drummer for Jane’s Addiction and later as the drummer for Porno for Pyros. Perkins started playing drums at eight years old and first met future Jane’s bandmate Dave Navarro in high school band where Nevarro was playing bass drum. In his early years Perkins was drawn to the Venice Beach drum circles where he first began to develop his love for drumming. In 1985 Jane’s Addiction was formed by Perry Farrell and Eric Avery with Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins joining in 1986. They were one of the first bands from the 90’s alternative rock movement to gain large media attention and commercial success. Jane’s Addiction originally split in 1991 with a brief reunion featuring Red Hot Chili Pepper’s bassist Flea. The band have continued to reunite over the past two decades with their latest tour happening in 2016. Perkins has also recorded with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nine Inch Nails, and has appeared on Drum Channel a number of times, teaching lessons and appearing in interviews. He also appeared on The Chad Smith Show alongside Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. In this episode Stephen talks about his early Jazz influences, drumming in the marching band in high school where he met Dave Navarro, the early days of Jane’s Addiction in LA during the 80s, finding your voice as a drummer, as well as giving us many inspiring points of his wisdom.
