With Intertraffic Amsterdam postponed until next March, the official podcast of the event is delivering thought leadership with a series of episodes featuring those who will be at the revised event next year. In this podcast presenter Paul Hutton chats about the postponement with fellow reporter Kevin Borras who says he was impressed that everyone was given as much warning as possible that the dates would be moved, “It's the right move and you have to applaud it. For the team tasked with making that decision it must have been one of the toughest of not just their professional lives, but their lives full stop. For a small show - if there are 500 visitors and 50 exhibitors - you can move that a bit nearer the time, but with Intertraffic Amsterdam you're looking at 38,000 people coming from all across the world and the best part of 1000 exhibitors across the halls. That's such a gargantuan event that you have to give it the time to move.” Paul also explains how the original podcast promoting Intertraffic had already been produced when the decision was taken to postpone, so he brings you one conversation from that, with George de Boer of TomTom who explains the Company’s move to focussing on B2B. “We're making sure that we can make data available to… automotive companies. Most of the automotive companies are using either our components or the full stack of navigation in their cars today. Or we can deliver that location tech to enterprises like Microsoft or Uber where they can use it in either their online services like Microsoft in the Azure Cloud, or Uber can use it in the back end, to optimize the routing for the Uber drivers.” Over the next few weeks, Paul and Kevin will be discussing a range of subjects that were to be covered at Intertraffic 2020, ready to set the scene for the revised event from 20 to 23 March 2021 at the RAI in Amsterdam. Make sure you listen in to these short podcasts to hear the best thought leadership throughout the lockdown.

This is a recording of an excellent PTV-led debate about the future of mobility and the use of data to support it, reducing the need for infrastructure building. The panel debate took place at the ITS World Congress in Singapore and was chaired by SMART Highways editor Paul Hutton.  It featured discussion on better traffic management, budget constraints, politicians' love of "turning dirt" rather than cheaper, quicker, more efficient technology solutions, and the "rush to be second". The debate, called "Orchestrating mobility in Smart Cities" focused on cities' orchestration of transport modes to deal with the most pressing mobility challenges: congestion, environmental impact and road safety. It started with a presentation about PTV Optima before a debate involving: Omid Ejtemai, PTV Group Chong Lee, Head of Urban Solutions, Volkswagen AG Majid Sarvi, Head of Transport Engineering, University of Melbourne Martin Huber, Head of BWVI, Hamburg Randy Iwasaki, Executive Director at Contra Costa Transportation Authority Abbas Mohaddes, CEO of Econolite and CAVita

We recorded so much great material at the ITS World Congress in Singapore, and some of it didn't fit into podcasts from the event, so here is a bonus podcast sponsored by AGD Systems, Cohda Wireless, HERE Technologies, Jenoptik, PTV Group, SWARCO and WSP. In the programme you'll hear the full summary of Congress from Prof Eric Sampson, Chief Rapporteur, who addressed the closing ceremony. Australian company Cohda Wireless and their partners Autonomous Stuff from Illinois Plus talk driverless technology and the business case around it, while we hear about data with EROAD and how anonomised data from road user charging can be used to predict traffic congestion and even accidents. We also hear from a first-time visitor to Congress, Steph Barton of WSP about her experiences at the event. Even this bonus podcast is not enough to fit in everything recorded in, so listen out for longer interviews with HERE, Blackberry, Dutch Experts and hall-of-famer Brian Negus to come, plus a session at congress with PTV and one from the opening of HERE’s new Singapore office. These will be available over the two weeks.

This latest edition of our SMART Highways podcast focusses on the latest issue of the magazine, covering smart motorways, other safety features in car and traffic management. Our cover feature in this issue is all about the topical issue in Britain at the moment – the safety of smart motorways. Given the technology is being copied, or being considered, around the world as a lower-cost way of delivering more capacity, it’s a key issue everywhere. SMART Highways reporter Emma Greedy spoke to key people about the concept, the problems and possible solutions and explained some of her findings to Talking Transport presenter Paul Hutton, the editor of SMART Highways magazine. In the podcast we also hear from two SMART Highways columnists who stick with the Safety First? message of the cover of the latest issue. Andy Graham talks eCall while Scott Belcher discusses photo enforcement. Traffic management is also key in the latest issue with a range of articles from using the nudge theory to make a difference managing traffic better using data. There is also a long but excellent article about the use of automated solutions within urban traffic management and control. The article is about solutions in Northeast England using Mott MacDonald software called Osprey, so we hear from Ken Cowan from Mott MacDonald about it. As the 26th ITS World Congress draws to a close, there is still lots of thought leadership going on in Singapore's Suntec Centre, and we're grabbing the best of it on Talking Transport sponsored by AGD Systems, Cohda Wireless, HERE Technologies, Jenoptik, PTV Group, SWARCO and WSP. In today's programme, we talk about the differing ways of approaching enforcement based on different cultural attitudes around the world with Jenoptik giving advice on how to approach the issue. The differences between cities and countries and a lack of one-size-fits-all approach is reflected in conversation with Bosch who talk about delivering mobility solutions in different places, while we hear about a radar-based safety solution from Navtech Radar that not only spots stopped vehicles but can help improve driving by catching tailgaters and centre lane hogs. Then we look to congresses future and how the British city of Birmingham is already working on its bid to host the World Congress in 2024, while Lisbon is going to be the location of Europe's first carbon-neutral mobility congress next year. Finally we hear from the President of ITS America about next year in Los Angeles. In our final SWARCO and Michigan-sponsored podcast reviewing the hugely successful ITS European Congress in Eindhoven, we hear from one of the planet's most knowledgable ITS experts, Professor Eric Sampson about smart cities, autonomous vehicles and MaaS. In the interview with SMART Highways editor Paul Hutton, Prof Sampson talks about the key points that came out of the discussion, including how cities are trying extremely hard to deliver the smart cities agenda but are finding it difficult because their city planners' department that doesn't necessarily talk to the roads department and are not used to the overlap. "There are cities that are coming to terms with this," he says, "In some cases driven by a different agenda for example the air quality in a city." He also talks about freight deliveries which drives innovation. Prof Sampson offers his views on the need for harmonisation of regulation, "Get yourself organised," he says, "Have some sort of common system of regulation... and that message was loud in Eindhoven - it wasn't loud in earlier congresses." He also discusses testing of driverless vehicles and compares it to the pharmaceutical industry and questions the necessity of reaching Level Five autonomy in driverless vehicles. Regarding Mobility as a Service, Prof Sampson talks about his reservations regarding and how people are now realising it is not as simple as some thought it would be. "The goal that you won't need to own your own transport, you won't need to buy a year's worth of train commuting service... is just a little bit too simplistic... An awful lot of conventional systems need to be changed and so far there has not been enough coordination." It's well worth the 20 minute listen!

The latest Talking Transport is a look ahead to the much anticipated ITS (UK) Summit that takes place on 27th November at the Bristol Harbour Hotel. Book your place at itssummit.co.uk. In this podcast, which is relevant to you whether you’re going to the event or not, the event’s keynote speaker Kirk Steudle talks about what he’ll cover in his speech about how to implement technology and where to find the budget. “The easiest thing is traffic signals," he says. "We replace traffic signals every single year... replacing it with a traffic signal controller that is adaptable to the future That's one way within existing budgets that we can be prepared to take advantage when it gets here." The Summit is discussing the real issues around implementation of technology in transport and not a day facing “death by powerpoint”. Among the sessions are a discussion about why great technology that the industry has invented doesn’t make it onto our network, is it because of understanding, budget, procurement or priorities? And how can we make the powers that be understand that ITS can often deliver benefits quicker, cheaper and more effectively than big infrastructure projects… You can join the conversation by signing up at itssummit.co.uk but be quick, places are selling out fast. The event is sponsored by Cubic, Kier, WSP and SNC Lavalin business Atkins. Another issue being discussed is ITS to improve the environment, so we hear from another of the Summit’s speakers – Dave Williams from Atkins – and also from Professor Margaret Bell of Newcastle University who talks about the transport-related environmental issues we face and what technology can do about it, and also has a reality check for people who work from home.

Lessons learned from the three years of the VENTURER driverless car project in southwest England is the main topic of conversation in the latest Talking Transport podcast, along with a look ahead to the forthcoming ITS World Congress. “From a technology perspective it is quite a challenge to put together an integrated system which consists of different components including sensors, the control system and in between the decision making,” explains Wolfgang Schuster, technical director at SNC Lavalin, as he talks about what the team has learned about creating a driverless car. His project colleague Professor Graham Parkhurst of the University of the West of England talks about the human reaction to the technology, saying, “You’ve got to consider the whole journey experience, from how you book it, how you access the transport and how it delivers the mobility part, but there’s everything else that goes with it, available in a package that suits people’s lives.” Meanwhile Daniel O’Byrne of AXA explains the insurance implications of the technology saying that for the user, “The best thing from a consumer perspective is that the status quo will be retained, there should be no difference to the way you purchase your insurance.” Before these three experts give their insights into the project you’ll hear from Didier Gorteman of ERTICO – ITS Europe about the ITS World Congress in Copenhagen which takes place in September who says that at the moment they are ahead of expectations with the number of registrations, and that it promises to be the biggest and the best congress he’s ever been involved in. He talks about the exhibition, special guests and overall programme for the event. This is the final Talking Transport before the summer break, it’s back in late August as we look at the latest Highways and SMART Highways magazines and more about the forthcoming Congress.
