This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Navigating the world can be difficult for anyone, whether or not they have vision loss. Tasks like driving safely through a city, navigating a busy airport, or finding the right bus stop all provide unique challenges. Thankfully, advances in technology are giving people more freedom of movement than ever before, allowing them to get where they want, when they want, safely. Smart Cities are putting data collection to work in a healthy way by providing information to make busy intersections more secure, sidewalks more accessible, and navigation more accurate. They're providing assistance for all aspects of travel, from the front door to the so-called “last hundred feet,” while using automated technology to make life easier every step of the way. And although fully autonomous vehicles are still on the horizon, the technology being used to develop them is being applied to improve other aspects of life in incredible ways. These applications are making the world more accessible, safer, and better for everyone, including people who are blind or visually impaired. One example of this is Dan Parker, the “World's Fastest Blind Man,” who has developed sophisticated guidance systems for his racing vehicles, as well as a semi-autonomous bicycle that could give people with vision loss a new way to navigate the world safely and independently. The Big Takeaways: Smart Cities. Greg McGuire and his team at MCity in Ann Arbor, Michigan are working on the concept of Smart Cities, which focus on using data to improve the everyday lives of their citizens. That means improving traffic intersection safety, greater accessibility options, providing detailed “last hundred feet” guidance, and much more. Autonomous Driving. In a perfect world, self-driving cars will provide ease of transportation for everyone, and create safer, less congested roads. That technology isn't there yet – but it's being worked on by talented researchers like John Dolan, the Principal Systems Scientist at Carnegie Mellon's Autonomous Driving Vehicle Research Center. Sophisticated sensors and advanced robot-human interfaces are being developed to make self-driving cars possible. Application of Technology. Even though the technologies behind Smart Cities and autonomous vehicles are still being developed, they can still be applied to everyday life in exciting ways. Things like miniature delivery robots that can deliver goods, AI-powered suitcases that can help you navigate busy airports, or semi-autonomous bicycles are already here – and there's more on the way. The World's Fastest Blind Man. When professional race car driver Dan Parker lost his vision in an accident, he felt lost. But a moment of inspiration led him and his business partner Patrick Johnson to develop a sophisticated guidance system that let him continue racing without human assistance. Thanks to this revolutionary technology, Dan became the “World's Fastest Blind Man” when he set a land-speed record of 211.043 miles an hour in his customized Corvette. Tweetables: “One of the key pillars of MCity is accessibility. The four areas we think about are safety, efficiency, equity, and accessibility. … Accessibility is that we can make transportation systems available to as many of us as possible.” – Greg McGuire, Managing Director of MCity “I became the first blind man to race Bonneville, with an average speed of 55.331 mph. And I returned in 2014 and set my official FIM class record … at 62.05 mph. … I'm the only blind land speed racer … with no human assistance.”– Dan Parker, the “World's Fastest Blind Man” “There are chairs, there are tables. ... We know we don't want to run into them, but we do want to walk in the walkable space. … A car wants to drive in the drivable space.” – John Dolan, Principal Systems Scientist at Carnegie Mellon's Autonomous Driving Vehicle Research Center “Because we know autonomous technology is increasing every day and it's coming, you know, a hundred percent it's coming. You know, transportation is freedom and that's exactly what that would bring us. Freedom.” – Dan Parker Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss. This week on the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, following two important announcements from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer solidifying Michigan's commitment to electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, a conversation with two of the people helping to make the ideas a reality. First, Elsa Givan, an analyst at Silicon Foundry who is working with the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and Michigan's Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, will talk about why this is a leapfrog moment for Michigan and the future of automated and electric vehicles. In a second segment, Michele Mueller, a senior project manager at MDOT, explains the Request for Proposals (RFP) process. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, while participating in the opening ceremony at Motor Bella, the governor announced an initiative to develop the nation's first wireless charging infrastructure on a public road in the U.S. The development of a wireless dynamic charging roadway in Michigan is a step toward addressing range anxiety and will accelerate the transition to all-electric transit fleets in Michigan and beyond. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce's Mackinac Policy Conference, the governor followed up with two related announcements:A “Lake Michigan EV Circuit,” a charging infrastructure network along Lake Michigan to support the region's tourism industry; andAn initiative to prepare Michigan's workforce for automotive mobility and electrification jobs and career pathways. Givan explains why these EV announcements represent a leapfrog moment for Michigan and what other states are doing in the charging realm. She likens the charging initiative to the Cavnue project, suggesting this project gives Michigan the ability to rapidly accelerate its electrification strategy by adopting a technology on the five to 10-year mass-adoption horizon. She also predicts that as automated EVs become the national standard, consumer expectations will shift toward complementary automated charging infrastructure, unlocking massive time and cost efficiencies for commercial freight, public transit, and private transportation. Underscoring the economic and work force development imperative, Givan says that in order to “own the future of mobility, Michigan must place bold bets on electrification innovation.” Projects like the Electric Avenue signal to the private sector that the state is the most conducive and supportive environment nationwide for EV companies to launch and scale their businesses, which in turn leads to new high-paying jobs in the mobility sector and economic growth. Later, MDOT's Mueller joins the podcast to explain her role in overseeing the RFP for the wireless charging roadway concept. She explains why Michigan offers a holistic and supportive environment for developing charging technology and the collaboration among several state agencies. Mueller also touts MDOT's other pioneering efforts in mobility like Mcity at the University of Michigan and the American Center for Mobility as effective examples of those partnerships. Because the RFP process encourages creativity and allows for developing innovative solutions, the expectation is for a number of companies to seize the opportunity to try out their concepts. Mueller further underscores Givan's comments about the value of this process providing myriad opportunities for companies here in Michigan to utilize and test their technology in a live environment.Podcast photo: Elsa Givan. Over Coffee® is on hiatus through the Christmas holidays. We'll be rebroadcasting some of our most popular episodes of 2017. Thank you for listening–and be sure to be with us for our coverage of CES 2018! Where are we headed, with autonomous vehicles? Michigan Applied Robotics Group co-founder Rourke Pattullo is participating in answering that question. And that response keeps evolving. Rourke, who is majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan, is currently spending a semester in Shanghai as part of the Michigan Engineers Abroad program. We had the opportunity to meet and chat at the 2017 Sensors Expo in San Jose, in June, after Rourke participated in the "Sense Technologies" panel during the new "Automotive and Autonomous Vehicles Sensors Workshop". At the time, Rourke had been serving as vice-president of the university's autonomous-boat team, UM: Autonomy. Prior to leaving for his fall semester in China, Rourke talked about his background, the University of Michigan's innovations in the area of autonomous vehicles, and his vision for the future. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Rourke's background led to his interest in autonomous vehicles; The test conditions self-driving cars face, in the University of Michigan's “Mcity”; Some of the technologies that may enable future self-driving cars; How the Michigan Applied Robotics Group came into being; How UM Autonomy used their problem-solving skills to implement a critical technology for autonomous boats; The first areas in which UM students learn, while constructing autonomous vehicles; Some of the obstacles researchers have found, to making self-driving vehicles a daily reality; The two reactions Rourke hears from the general public, about the idea of autonomous vehicles; Myths, versus the realities, of "smart" vehicles; Rourke's favorite funny experience, which illustrates one of the “human-nature” obstacles to implementing self-driving cars; Some of the considerations involved in implementing the new technology in urban areas; Rourke's projections of the role of autonomous vehicles in two different areas, ten years in the future; And, how engineers are designing self-driving cars to deal with weather challenges.
While we grapple with the mysteries of the world around us, while we do our best to solve your conundrums, provide you with advice, and tease out your bizarre hypothetical situations, we are being watched. Watched, judged, and pitied, by beings beyond our perception, hovering outside our senses on the edges of our reality.
